Youtube daily report Jan 4 2017

Not long ago, it seemed like Alyson Hannigan was everywhere.

But after How I Met Your Mother ended in 2014, Alyson Hannigan seemed to drop off the radar.

Now, we're more likely to see her in a magazine or doing a random blog interview than at the

movies.

So, why won't Hollywood cast Alyson Hannigan anymore?

Better on the small screen

Quick — think of an Alyson Hannigan movie not named after a patriotic dessert.

We couldn't think of one either.

"Yeah, that's pretty much it."

While many people were introduced to Alyson Hannigan as the band camp girl in American

Pie, she's even better known for being one of the main cast in two hugely popular television

shows, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and How I Met Your Mother.

Because of just how long she was in the spotlight as part of two big TV shows, it may be hard

to re-package Hannigan as a movie star rather than as someone who shines on television as

a geeky witch or an artsy teacher.

Changed public image

Like many of her Buffy and American Pie castmates, Hannigan was packaged as a sex symbol during

her initial rise to fame.

While she posed for a handful of cheesecake photo spreads, that really wasn't an aspect

of her personality she appeared enthusiastic about.

No one lounges in lingerie in front of the cameras forever, but for fans who remember

Hannigan for her geeky sex appeal, her more grown-up image as a mom might be a bit of

a tough sell.

Typecast

Whether she's on Buffy or How I Met Your Mother, Hannigan is always playing the comic relief.

As Willow Rosenberg, Hannigan often dispensed wry commentary, and as Lily Aldrin, she was

the humorous voice who could poke fun at Ted's quest to find the future mother of his children.

Her most prominent Hollywood role in American Pie isn't very serious either.

She hasn't played any popular serious roles, so most people have never seen whether she's

capable of any range at all… if they can even get past that whole flute thing.

"That's a lot of flutes."

Milking her old roles

While Buffy went off the air in 2003, fans have kept the show alive with fan fiction

and comic conventions throughout the world.

Both Hannigan and her husband are very popular stars on the sci-fi convention circuit, available

to fans eager to get autographs and pictures with their favorite Buffy characters.

This further cements Hannigan with her genre roots, potentially making it harder to believe

her as a character in other roles.

She's at a weird age

As of 2016, Alyson Hannigan is 42 years old, which puts her at a kind of intermediate age.

She's no longer young enough to be the teen sidekick she once was, or to be a newlywed

yuppie.

But she isn't really old enough to play a mentor to younger cast mates, which ultimately

makes her very hard to put into a movie.

It's not just a Hollywood illusion; Maggie Gyllenhaal, at 37 years old, reported that

she was turned down for a role because she was considered too old to be the love interest

for a man who was 55.

But still, she was good enough to be one of the Joker's murder victims.

So, Hannigan is at a strange place where she has to navigate a weird matrix of sexism,

ageism, and fan expectations, which is, surprisingly, a whole lot harder than fighting vampires

and demons with magic powers.

Busy with real estate

Actors age and roles fade away, but property is almost always a solid investment — as

proven by Hannigan's growing portfolio, which made headlines in December of 2016 after she

and her husband picked up a new home worth nearly $8 million.

The couple's L.A. pad, which was featured in the movie Fracture, is just part of a list

of properties that includes a home in Atlanta and a rental property in nearby Santa Monica.

Family time

Hannigan married Alexis Denisof, who played fellow Buffy veteran Wesley Wyndam-Pryce,

back in 2003.

Since then, Alyson has given birth to two daughters.

Hannigan is known for being very active with her family and has understandably felt the

pressure of balancing her family life and her professional life.

The late nights and re-shoots that come with major motion pictures don't totally fit in

with motherhood, but this seems to suit her just fine.

Hannigan is positively beaming in nearly every photo she takes with her family.

Nothing against any of her best-known characters, but it sounds like Hannigan may have found

the role of a lifetime.

Why American TV needs a Muslim Modern Family - Duration: 4:28.

You are, according to the FBI, more likely to die as the result of faulty furniture

than by an Islamic terrorist.

So, you should really be scared of your La-Z-Boy.

For a very long time, really the only Muslims that you saw on TV were the Muslim villain

who would scream, "Allahu akbar!"

and then blow himself up.

[Clip] "Allahu akbar!"

And then there was, like, the "good Muslim".

So you have that great movie "Body of Lies",

and you're like "Oh, look it's a Muslim

guy who's good, he's, like, with the CIA!"

No! He's dead.

Like, three minutes into the movie.

He's done.

In the 1980s, being Muslim in America was like being Martian.

I grew up in a predominantly Mexican community.

So I just told everybody I was Mexican.

I didn't really know that much Spanish.

I knew, like,"Órale!" and I just, like, would throw that out every

once in a while.

"Órale!"

And people would be like, "Oh, you're obviously Mexican".

It was very important that we kept the whole

Muslim and Iranian thing on the down-low as much as possible.

I was longing for a way to express myself spiritually.

And so, I started reading about Islam,

I started reading the Quran.

The more I read, the more I realized

this is what I already believe, I just didn't know there was a word for it.

[Clip] "Please welcome back to the program,

Reza Aslan."

[Clip 1] "Reza Aslan."

[Clip 2] "Reza Aslan."

[Clip] "Reza, let me start with you."

The hardest part for me when I'm being interviewed,

is to tamp down my astonishment.

[Clip] "The question at the bottom of the screen that everyone is looking at:

does Islam promote violence?"

The thing that's mostly going through

my mind is "calm down, calm down".

[Clip] "The justice system in Muslim countries,

you don't think, is somehow more primitive"

[Clip] "or subjugates women more than in

other countries?"

[Clip] "Did you hear what you just said?

You said 'in Muslim countries'."

Please don't generalize about 1.7 billion people in the world.

[Clip] "You're a Muslim, so why did you

write a book about the founder of Christianity?"

[Clip] "Well, to be clear, I am a scholar

of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament and fluency

in biblical Greek."

The Fox News video, that one really touched a nerve.

I woke up the next day and realized I had

ten thousand new followers.

I mean, everybody was talking about it.

I got a lot of positive comments from people.

Muslims who were saying, you know, for the first time,

"Okay, now we have proof

of how we are being dealt with all the time.

This is what it's like to be Muslim in America."

The negative stuff, however, was much, much louder.

I've got an entire file folder of just death threats.

After about ten years of being cable news' favorite Muslim,

I've come to the realization that I don't think it's doing any good.

Bigotry is not a result of ignorance, it's a result of fear.

And fear is impervious to data, fear is impervious to information.

The only way that you're gonna dissipate that fear

is by getting people to know someone that they're afraid of.

In this country, we went from overwhelming

majorities who were against same-sex marriage

to overwhelming majorities supporting

same-sex marriage within the span of a couple of years.

What changed peoples' minds was "Will and Grace",

was "Modern Family".

Was watching people who were gay,

on television, being, you know, normal.

They're struggling with the same issues

that you're struggling with.

They are human beings.

And so for the last few years I've decided

that what I'm gonna do is try to change peoples' minds

through pop culture, through film and television.

Stories have the power to break through the

walls that separate us

into different ethnicities, different cultures,

different nationalities, different races,

different religions.

Because they hit us at the human level.

Incredible Crispy Roast Goose and Claypot Rice in Hong Kong — HK Travel Food Guide! - Duration: 24:36.

- It is an absolute trophy, come to

get a close up look of that!

It also comes with a plum sauce, but I'm just

gonna taste it just like this, on it's own.

(cheery music)

Really quickly, before you continue

watching this video, I wanted to let you know,

that I published a full Hong Kong travel

guide over on my blog, migrationology.com.

It includes all the details of everything we did.

Especially all of the food and the restaurants,

and all the details, you'll find all

of that in the travel guide.

So I will link it below in the description box.

And also, maybe try to link it somewhere here.

But go check that out for all

the details from all these videos.

Good morning everyone, it's Mark Weins

from migrationology.com, in Hong Kong.

It is a down pouring morning!

It's raining really hard and so

the only logical thing to do

this morning, is to go eat dim sum!

(raining)

(mumbling)

(clanking)

This restaurant is called, Sam Hui Yat,

and this is just the neighborhood,

kind of, hole in the wall family run

dim sum restaurant, in Hong Kong.

They have all of the dim sum

within the bamboo trees, steaming

right at the front of the restaurant.

And so you just pick and choose the ones you want.

I really love this place.

This one is the shumai, and then also

this one, I'm not sure what this

one is exactly called, but my mom

always called this phu jute, which is the bean curd.

And then I think there's minced

pork in the middle, this one is

the classic chicken feet, had to

go with the chicken feet.

Also got some shrimp har gau, and then

also some meatballs, and then my

personal favorite, I had this yesterday

as well, lo mai gai, which is

the treasured, sweet sticky rice.

Okay, I'm gonna begin with one of the shumai.

And I think these are, I'm not sure

there's shrimp in this one, or

mostly just minced pork.

That's salty and porky, and oily.

Oh that's delightful!

Let me follow that with a swig of tea.

Okay I'm gonna grab some of this

chili sauce, put some in my bowl.

Alright, while the har gau is hot and

fresh, I'm gonna have one of these,

these are little shrimp dumplings.

Dip this into the chili sauce, that

is just a good, classic, har gau,

the sticky glutinous wrapper.

And then just filled with shrimp on the inside.

Next up for the bean curd rolls.

And this has been one of my favorites since I was a kid.

I love that bean curd, and it may

not be the prettiest, that like

crinkly bean curd, but it tastes fantastic.

Oh I love it so much, I think it's

stuffed with, minced pork, mushrooms and carrots.

And then that skin has a little

bit of a chewiness to it, a quick dip.

Let me open up my package next.

Oh I get excited every time I unravel one of these.

Oh, I love how it just glistens!

And you can immediately smell that aroma.

Of the lotus leaf.

Peel that back.

Okay.

And you can see all of those insides

just oozing already, how sticky

and hot and wonderful that is.

It's so good, it's so comforting.

The rice is just glutinous, and sticky

and then it's gooey on the inside.

With minced meat and maybe some

sausage in there as well.

So awesome and followed by tea!

Actually now that I taste more

of that, I think it's chicken in there.

I don't know if there's minced pork,

maybe minced pork as well, but mostly chicken.

Meatball time!

Oh yes, these are some, whoa,

these are some stuck together meatballs!

That's gonna take a little bit of prying.

Alright, here we go!

Oh and I think there's bean curd on the bottom of it too.

A meatball definitely needs to be dipped into the sauce.

I've got a hanging piece of bean

curd on this meatball as well.

That's just solid minced pork.

But it has a little bit of a spongy texture to it.

And then I also had to go for the chicken feet.

Look at these big wrinkly feet!

Oh yeah, that has a lot of skin!

And a lot of little bones as well!

It's pretty good, it's very, very, gelatinous.

It's very, very, kind of squishy,

and a little bit leathery, it taste

like very soft leather.

And you can actually feel like that grip.

On the bottom of the chicken feet.

It's like goosebumps.

There's actually a lot to eat on these chicken feet.

(sighing)

Pure satisfaction, I love this place.

It's small, it has a neighborhood feel to it.

I think a lot of the people that come here

live in the area, and have been

coming here for many, many, years.

And this is a great place to

have a real hole in the wall style

dim sum experience in Hong Kong.

Well I guess you can see it, but it

stopped raining while we had dim sum.

So perfect, it's still drizzling just a little bit.

But nice that it's not down pouring anymore.

Some of you may already know this,

but my mother is Chinese, but from Hawaii.

And so I grew up eating a lot of Chinese

food, and I grew up especially

loving dim sum when I was a kid.

And so every time I eat dim sum,

it reminds me of my family, it

reminds me of my childhood, yeah

dim sum holds a special place in my heart.

And almost as soon as I said the rain

has stopped, it has started raining again.

We are back at the metro station,

on our way to central station, and hopefully

we are gonna have goose for lunch today.

(bright music)

Oh it is raining pretty hard, I

need to take out the umbrella.

(bright music)

The last time I was in Hong Kong

I ate roast goose at a place called,

Yat Lok, but some people say that the

roast goose at Yung Kee is even better.

Say that it is the best roast goose in the entire world.

It's a little bit of an upscale

restaurant I think, but I think it's gonna be

worth it, I cannot wait to try the roast goose.

This restaurant has a lot of history in Hong Kong.

It started off as just a very, very, small

local family run restaurant, and it

has turned into a goose empire!

It is such a tough decision.

I'm trying to debate right now, if I should

order the steamed chicken, definitely

ordering the goose of course, but I'm not

sure if I should order the steamed

chicken, or the soy marinated chicken.

Right now I'm leaning towards the soy marinated chicken.

I made my order for the main dishes,

but I also got an appetizer.

And they are very well known for this appetizer

as well, which is thousand year old egg.

I got a half and also served with pickled ginger.

It almost looks like a jello, I'm

gonna take some of the pickled ginger.

Stick that on top, or maybe all of it.

No, maybe two slices, and let me begin with

the egg white, which is actually like,

whoa that is slippery!

That does have the texture of jello.

It's really quite mild, oh, maybe not!

You can taste that it does have some age to it!

Let me re-add that ginger, and all

that yolk is spilling out, oh-no.

I'm losing it now.

Okay, I'm gonna have to break and

tear it together with that ginger.

The egg does have a bitter taste to it.

But then paired with that ginger, the ginger is sweet.

I wouldn't say that's my absolute favorite.

But it's not bad.

The chicken and the choy sum have just come.

And we're still waiting on the goose.

But I should just mention that I ordered tea.

And they have a number of different teas

you could choose from, I went with

some pu-erh tea, which is a black fermented tea.

And I really like it.

It indeed does have a little bit of a dirt flavor to it.

But it's very earthy, just slightly bitter.

But very, very smooth.

I ordered the soy sauce marinated chicken.

In order to get a real appreciation for

this you need have to see it really up close.

You can see how the skin is separated

completely from the meat and just

that golden, soy sauce, glaze on top of it.

For this piece, right here on the top.

I think this is a combination of

garlic and maybe green onions, and maybe ginger.

I'm not totally sure, and then oil.

Which I will apply, generously to my first bite.

Oh that's a bite to savor!

Oh that texture, and that flavor, that explosion!

Of salty, garlicky, green onion flavor.

You can really taste the different textures

of the chicken, and the skin.

The chicken meat is like, it's tender,

and juicy, and then the skin has

a very jelly texture to it, but

they're like completely separate.

And then that sauce, wow, is just packed with flavor.

Oh it's salty, it's oily, fragrant,

it's garlicky and green onion packed.

And also, our waiter said that choy sum, is in

season and I got the version with oyster sauce.

It's crisp and very juicy!

That entire stem is very juicy,

and I need some rice with that.

Oh, even the rice is really good here!

I think the grand arrival of the goose has come.

Let's welcome him to our table.

- Thank you!

- Thank you.

And on the menu, you can order a couple of different

portion sizes, and I ordered the section

of course, with the drumstick.

She brought it over, and as soon as

she brought it over, she topped it,

anointed it with a sauce, and I think

there's some peanuts in the sauce.

I'm not sure what else, there's types

of juices are within that sauce.

But that skin of that goose, is insane!

It's golden-bronze!

Roasted perfectly, and you can actually

smell the aroma of that goose oil and fat.

It is an absolute trophy.

I'm gonna start with this piece right here.

On the top.

Oh let me pull that off real fast.

Come to get a close up look of that.

It also comes with a plum sauce, but I'm just

gonna taste it just like this, on it's own.

Oh.

That is ridiculous, that skin!

It's just completely juicy, with

fats and oils from that goose.

And that meat is so succulent, and

it has a little bit of a muscular texture to it.

And with every bite, you can taste that goose.

Wow.

Okay let me reach down here for

a piece of the leg, right there.

And I'm gonna dip it more in that sauce that came with it.

What I like about it, is it's not too salty.

And you can really taste the flavor

of the goose and the succulent meat.

The quality of that goose.

And for this piece, I'm gonna dip

it into the sweet plum sauce.

I think that's a back bone!

Wow, that skin is juicing right now in my mouth.

Okay that was an incredibly fatty piece.

Maybe pure fat, we're about half way through

the plate of goose, and this is gonna

be my next bite here, you just

have to fully examine this bite.

Look at that skin, it's like a full

circle of skin, and I'm not sure, at

first I thought it was from the drumstick.

But maybe it's from the wing, 'cause the drumstick

is over here on the other side.

But there is some meat under here, I think

this is gonna be a pure, boneless bite.

With just a little bit of meat.

And look at that ratio, that entire, like

sleeve of skin, you need to just

see this as close as possible, to just fully

appreciate and just gaze into that skin.

And that bronze shimmer.

What I would like to mention, is that,

within the skin, not only is it just juicy

and crispy, but it has such a complex

flavor, you can taste all of that, marinade.

I'm sure they use a mix of ingredients to marinate it.

And then also, you can actually taste

the charcoal, roasted, flavor to it.

It's like caramelized skin, it's just an absolute treat.

That was just the perfect amount of goose.

I feel fantastic, and slightly giddy,

after eating that, that skin is just

it's a remarkable thing, it's just unbelievable

when you are eating it.

And I savored every single bite of that.

Our total bill came to 654 Hong Kong dollars.

Just stepping outside after that meal,

that goose has nearly put me into a slumber.

(bright music)

It's starting to drizzle again.

So I think it's just gonna be a rainy, drizzly day.

All day long.

So we are heading back to the subway,

we're gonna go back to the hotel for a little while.

(bright music)

I'm not sure if I'm suffering right now

from a case of jet lag, or a case of goose lag.

(dripping)

I decided to detour the nap, by

coming down to the club lounge.

And having a cup of coffee.

(loud exhale)

And this view behind me, the harbor,

the streets of Hong Kong.

(beeping)

We are taking the subway on our

way to Temple Street Night Market.

(loud incoherent chatter)

Oh wow, it is rush hour right now in Hong Kong.

(loud incoherent chatter)

At least we're getting closer.

Luckily the trains come like, every 30 seconds,

at just rush hour time, but it is packed!

(beep)

We got off the subway at Yau Ma Tei Station,

and we're gonna go to a restaurant first for dinner,

before going to Temple Street Night Market.

(bright music)

(loud chatter)

In this area there are a number of restaurants,

that specialize in clay pot rice.

And I chose to come to Four Seasons.

This is a great like, open room restaurant.

And they mainly have a huge selection of clay

pots of rice, with all sorts of different toppings.

I got the one with Chinese mushroom and chicken.

And they also specialize in oyster omelets here.

But I think I've had my quota for oil

for the day, so I decided not to order that.

But just got the clay pot rice, and a order of vegetable.

This restaurant has an atmosphere that's

similar between, a food court, and a garage.

For vegetable I ordered water morning glory bowl.

That's quite a pile of water morning glory.

And then fermented bean sauce on the side.

Okay, I'll get some of this.

And get a little bit of that, I bet that's really salty.

Yeah, it has almost a cheesy taste to it.

Very salty and then, the water morning

glory is still crisp and a little bit slimy.

But the vegetable is very plain,

maybe just plain steamed or boiled.

Because it's meant to eat with this sauce.

For flavoring.

It only took about five minutes

and the clay pot has arrived, hot and fresh.

As soon as he brings over the clay pot

they you pay for your meal.

And they have the orders written

on these little pieces of paper.

Which are kinda like half stuck to your dishes.

Oh, that steam smells awesome.

Oh it's so fragrant!

It's like a soothing fragrance.

The rice you can smell that fresh steamed

rice with a little bit of a roasted aroma to it.

You can smell that chicken and those mushrooms.

And you can see how the chicken

is almost like melted onto the rice.

What you have to immediately do is

give it a squirt of the sauce.

I think this is dark soy sauce of some sort.

Alright I'll just go for a little bit at first.

Okay what I'll do is I'll dish some

of it out into my little bowl.

Get that piece of chicken.

Oh it does smell incredibly good.

That mushroom.

Let me go in with my spoon.

Get a bit more of that rice.

Let me just taste some of that rice first.

That is really, really, smokey tasting.

And I think I got a little piece of the crust.

From the clay pot on that bite.

It tastes like the chicken has been

marinated maybe in some oyster sauce.

Before it was tossed on top of the rice.

And yeah the chicken almost has a melt-y feel to it.

This is just straight comfort food.

Chicken and rice, and a smokey clay pot fragrance.

The rice almost has a nutty flavor.

Next I'll try some of this chili sauce.

Oh yeah.

Oh, that's very salty.

You gotta use just a tiny bit of that chili sauce.

Really, really, salty.

You gotta really splash on the sauce.

You gotta like coat your whole rice in it.

It tastes so good.

I think it's soy sauce but maybe with

a little bit of sweetness in it.

And I'm just going with that rice right

out of the pot, on that crusty edge.

Yeah, with that sauce all over it,

and that crusty, smokey, nutty edge.

That was good, fragrant, a simple taste.

But I like that sauce!

That soy sauce, just a little bit

of a sweet tinge, but it's not

like the thick dark soy sauce.

But it tasted really good with that rice.

And the, like melting pieces of chicken.

Hello!

(laughing)

And that is right, just one lane over

from Temple Street, so now we're walking

over to Temple Street, we're gonna

walk around the night market for a little while.

At the Temple Street Night Market, you

will find all sorts of random things.

From electronics and batteries, to

flashlights, and clothes, and cell phone cases.

Bracelets, antiques, clothes, CD's and DVD's,

all sorts of random things.

(bright pop music)

I'm gonna go ahead and end the video

for today, right now, Ying and I

are gonna leisurely stroll around

for a little while, and then take

the metro back to our hotel.

Thank you all very much for watching

World of Warships - Naval Legends: USS Midway - Part 1 - Duration: 9:59.

They were designed to be the best…

they met enemies face to face,

endured tragedies and enjoyed victories…

they went down in history due to the bravery of their crews…

they are the ships that deserve to be called

"Naval Legends!"

In this episode: Aircraft carrier Midway

a pioneer in the jet era

USS Midway was an engineering marvel when it was commissioned right at the end of World War II

It took 5 years to design, 90 tons of blueprints, only 17 months to build.

The idea to build a marvel like this was suggested by the US Navy's Bureau of Ships as far back as 1940.

For American admirals, this was a dream:

a carrier that would be as robust as a battleship and have at least 120 aircraft on board.

Over the course of the war, the role of carrier-borne aviation increased

and the admirals' dream became more real.

In autumn 1943, while the heavy Essex-class carriers were already fighting in the Pacific,

the United States launched construction of a supercarrier.

This has always been a dream.

The Chinese built the Wall, the Egyptians built the pyramids, the Japanese built Yamato

and the Americans built Midway.

Commissioned on September 10, 1945, aircraft carrier Midway was the lead ship of her class.

She was similar to USS Essex in terms of design,

but had twice the displacement and a much higher price.

Look, you've invested money in this idea. But the war shows that something's wrong,

something's not the way it should be, something can be done better.

So these funds are wasted, and you need new investments.

And remember that Midway is being constructed during the war, which means the ship is constantly being upgraded:

her dimensions, equipment, armament, support systems…

And it turned out that one Midway cost the same as two Essex-class carriers.

Of course, the following Midway-class ships were cheaper,

but the first one was virtually made of gold—

both in terms of money and implemented technical solutions.

Specifications of aircraft carrier Midway

Length: about 295 m

Beam: 41 m

Total displacement: about 60,000 tons

The power plant consisted of four turbines and 12 boilers,

which produced 212,000 horsepower and allowed the huge carrier to produce a speed of 33 knots.

As compared to its predecessors, Midway boasted imposing armor.

No American carrier had ever been protected so well.

Flight deck: 89 mm

Conning tower: 89–165 mm

To improve the ship's stability, her armor belt was different on her port and starboard side:

193 and 178 mm thick respectively.

Armament

The ship was equipped with the most advanced versatile guns ever used in aircraft carriers.

There were eighteen 127-mm Mark 16 guns in single mounts, designed for Montana-class battleships.

The aircraft carrier also had 21 quadruple Bofors 40-mm guns and 20 coaxial Oerlikon 20-mm cannons.

Midway was designed to carry 136 aircraft, such as:

Vought [VAWT] F4U Corsair fighters

Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters

Curtiss SB2C Helldiver dive bombers

Cruising range: 15,000 miles at 15 knots

Midway was so much better than all other US Navy attack carriers, such as USS Essex and USS Saratoga

that it was distinguished as a new type—battlecarriers.

It only missed the war by one week.

Many of the lessons learned from that war were incorporated here on Midway.

This was the first American carrier with a steel flight deck instead of a wooden flight deck.

The advantages of a steel armored deck were evident.

It minimized the impact from direct hits and fires, while the damage control party could deal with the rest.

We're here in Damage Control Central, one of the most important compartments on this ship,

right in the middle of the ship.

It was here that emergency decisions were made when there was a fire,

when there might have been an electrical short.

This is where sailors called with an emergency.

The damage control officer and sailors here had to make key decisions

using phones to communicate with the rest of the ship.

But that could only take place if these young sailors were experts in the blueprints of Midway.

Blueprints were constantly changing as the ship was modified and modernized.

They would provide the information to the damage control officer to make the key decisions.

And then he would call the captain 14 decks up in the bridge to keep him advised.

A very, very important place here on the USS Midway.

Making the carrier's survivability as high as possible wasn't just the paranoia of American shipbuilders.

By the middle of the war, the Japanese air force had destroyed several US carriers.

So Midway turned out to be a truly unsinkable ship, which could withstand any raid

and remain combat capable even when critically damaged.

Quite often, you will hear an incompetent opinion that USS Midway was designed as an armored ship,

based on the experience of kamikaze attacks.

But that's completely wrong. Kamikazes came after four years of the war.

And Midway was designed in 1940, when the United States of America hadn't even joined the war.

Midway could withstand a hole in its hull 300 feet long below the waterline and yet still be able to operate.

Because of the way it was designed, there wouldn't be very much flooding and it could continue its mission.

So this was the ship that was a true pioneer when it came to armament

and being able to withstand enemy attacks.

After Midway was commissioned in September 1945, she was on training for five months in the Caribbean,

and in late February 1946 she became the flagship for the US Atlantic Fleet's carrier division.

Now USS Midway and thousands of her sailors were to serve in the rough conditions of the North Atlantic.

To prepare an aircraft carrier for a month at sea, a week was required to load her with all kinds of supplies.

So there would be trailers coming to the carrier all the time and discharging all kinds of stuff.

Midway was a floating city at sea (population: 4,500). Imagine 4,500 sailors all living inside three football fields,

250 feet apart, in nests of beds like this throughout the ship, in a very difficult environment.

They're three high, solid steel ship, no air conditioning, no such thing as privacy.

Privacy, indeed, was a distant memory aboard USS Midway.

And yet, these are the living conditions that were necessary for 4,000 men.

How do you take care of 4,500 men when it comes to feeding them?

Well, you need 200 cooks, 10 tons of food a day, and you need to prepare 13,500 meals every single day.

This is one of six restaurants or galleys on Midway where that took place.

Cooks worked here 20 hours a day, seven days a week

to make sure 4,500 19-year olds were well fed.

Evidence-Based Eating - Duration: 4:03.

"Evidence-Based Eating"

In the 1940s and 50s, the American Medical Association was not only saying that

smoking—in moderation—was not a problem, but that on balance,

smoking may even be beneficial.

After all, most physicians themselves smoked; so, how bad could it be?

With the American Medical Association saying this, where could you turn back then

if you just wanted the facts?

What's the new data advanced by science?

"She was too tired for fun… and then she smoked a Camel."

Babe Ruth spoke of proof-positive medical science, that is, when he still could speak,

before he died of throat cancer.

Now, some of the science did leak out,

causing a dip from about 11 cigarettes a day per person on average down to 10,

but those that got scared could always choose the cigarette

that takes the fear out of smoking,

or, even better, choose the cigarette that gives you the greatest health protection.

Now, if by some miracle, there was a SmokingFacts.org website back then

that could deliver the science directly to the people,

bypassing commercially corruptible institutional filters,

you would have become aware of studies like this: an Adventist study out of California in 1958

that showed that nonsmokers may have at least 90% less lung cancer than smokers.

Now, with so much money and personal habit at stake,

there will always be dissenters.

But, given the seriousness of these diseases and the sum total of evidence,

we shouldn't wait to put preventive measures in place.

So, if you're a smoker back in the 50s in the know, what do you do?

With access to the science, you realize that the best available balance of evidence

suggests that your smoking habit is probably not good for you.

So, do you change your smoking habits or do you wait?

If you wait until your physician tells you, between puffs, to quit, you could have cancer by then.

If you wait until the powers that be officially recognize it, like the Surgeon General did

in the subsequent decade, you could be dead by then.

It took more than 7,000 studies and the deaths of countless smokers before the first

Surgeon General report against smoking was finally released in the 60s.

You'd think maybe after the first 6,000 studies maybe they could have given

people a little heads up or something?

One wonders how many people are currently suffering needlessly from dietary diseases.

Maybe we should have stopped smoking after the 700th study like this.

Now, fast forward fifty-five years.

There's a new Adventist study out of California.

Warning Americans about something else they may be putting in their mouth.

And, it's not just one study.

According to a recent review, the total sum of evidence suggests

that mortality from all causes put together,

and many of our dreaded diseases –

ischemic heart disease, and circulatory and cerebrovascular diseases, like stroke,

were significantly lower in those eating more plant-based diets,

in addition to less cancer and diabetes.

So, instead of someone going along with America's smoking habits in the 1950s,

imagine you or someone you know going along with America's eating habits in the present day.

What do you do?

With access to the science, you realize that the best available balance of evidence

suggests that your eating habits are probably not good for you.

So, do you change your eating habits or do you wait?

If you wait until your doctor tells you, between bites, to change your diet,

it could be too late.

Just like most doctors smoked back then, despite the overwhelming evidence

published for decades, most doctors today continue to eat foods

that are contributing to our epidemics of dietary disease.

The Nordic Country Secretly Negotiating World Peace - Duration: 3:35.

For nearly as long as civilization has been fighting wars, it has been making peace.

One of the earliest recorded peace treaties was engraved into a stone wall more than three

thousand years ago, ending a war between the Egyptians and the ancient Hittite Empire.

Peace negotiations have always been ritualistic, although traditions have changed over time.

In the early middle ages, before literacy, many peace treaties were sealed with a kiss.

Today, such agreements usually require signed documentation, a handshake and a neutral third

party.

Often this third party is the United Nations, but in many instances it's Norway.

In fact since the end of the cold war, the Scandinavian country has recognized its engagement

in ten peace processes.

However experts say this figure could be as high as 20, as such arrangements are often

bound to secrecy.

Most recently, Norway was instrumental in brokering peace between the government of

Colombia and the FARC rebel group, although the measure was ultimately rejected in a referendum.

So, why Norway?

Well, Norway has a long history as a so-called "peace nation".

The relatively young country emerged out of a non-violent secession with Sweden in 1905

and has since focused its foreign policy on global leadership, conflict resolution and

promoting international human rights, rather than wars or colonization.

The Norwegian government was able to boost these initiatives in the late 20th century,

as the discovery of oil in the 1970's made it one of the wealthiest countries in Europe.

By the end of the 1990's, Norway was funding more than 20 NGOs in nearly 100 countries,

and an estimated one percent of its population was taking part in peacekeeping missions around

the world.

Meanwhile, Norway cemented its role as a neutral intermediary in major international conflicts.

Throughout the 1990's, the country brokered peace deals in Europe, Central America, Africa

and the Middle East, beginning with the Oslo Accords in 1993.

This was a series of meetings between Israel and Palestine, which had been in violent conflict

for decades.

Norway was uniquely qualified to broker peace as it had friendly diplomatic relations with

both Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

The Oslo Accords was the first time Israel and Palestine formally recognized each other,

and although the accords weren't a peace treaty in a formal sense, they paved the way

for a final agreement to be signed in 1998.

However Norway's role in these and other peace treaties is not without controversy.

For nearly 70 years Norway been a close ally to the US and other Western powers through

its membership to NATO, taking part in all of its major military operations.

This has led to many to question whether the country is truly an impartial mediator, as

it has made a commitment to defend NATO countries.

Although Norway's impartiality has been called into question, the country still upholds

its reputation as the world's peace broker.

In fact, when discussing matters of diplomacy, many people reference the so-called "Norwegian

model", which combines facilitation of peace treaties with long term humanitarian aid.

Even the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Norway, after the winner is chosen by members of the

Norwegian parliament.

There's no doubt Norway's non-violent history, combined with its active role in

mediating conflicts, has cemented its identity as the world's peace mediator.

Norway plays an active role in the United Nations and NATO, and the country has one

of the fastest growing economies in Europe.

So how powerful is Norway?

Find out in this video.

This is partially due to Norway being the largest per capita producer of oil outside

the Middle East, accounting for roughly a quarter of the countriy's $4 billion GDP.

More Memos to Myself \\ Jason .Rivera - Duration: 5:01.

So I had something to talk about today but the thing is I did not write it down anywhere

And what happens when you do not write things down is you forget them.

So what I am going to do today is tell you all of the things that I have written down

in my memos here I have done this video before but there are hundreds more Memos in here

that I think are kind of hysterical so I am going to read more of these okay, this one

just says December 5 3 o'clock.

I started writing this thing where I was going to make a video about it but there is not

enough stuff to write so it's just kind of an open-ended thing so I will type out haha

all the time and texting all the time almost every single message I will see haha or I

will say if hahahahaha I wanted to really convey that I am really laughing no I am probably not

laughing I also write a Gnighters I never say this in person I will never ever other

than right now say gnighters in person I won't but if I am texting someone I will

say gnighters for no reason and then also I write ellipses all the time and I guess that works all the

time then saying like what I just did like that...

I guess that works but overall I started making this life hacks memo and I only have one thing

on it and it's putting out candles with the lid or a coaster so if you put the lid on

top of it the candle will die out because it has no oxygen to pull from anymore so it

dies out and then the smoke clouds up inside at the little glass things so there is no

smoke that goes out in the air and you still have the candle smell instead of the smell

that smoke everywhere also by doing that you don't get any of the black stuff that like

floats inside of the wax so there you go there is a life hack for you...I... I also have

a memo that says 203.10

there is 1827 I just don't get how I think that I am going to remember what I mean

later I just don't know my gosh so because I say hi guys or say hello everyone in my

videos often I was calling Walmart and someone says hi this is the deli how can I help you

and then I legitimately without thinking about it just said hi guys oh no and then I just

kept going with the conversation but that was the weirdest thing ever and yeah I actually

said hi guys to a woman in the deli section and then she continued to call me ma'am because

like every single phone call I am on I get called ma'am I don't even think that I

was trying to make this into a video I think I just wanted to write this for myself it

says two dreams at a time with a few on the side and then I said ASL which is being an

ASL interpreter then YouTube sensation I want to be a YouTube sensation it's true I am not

like freaking out that it needs to happen right now I just do want it to happen

in my future and then also the few on the side is writing a book getting a promotion

which actually apparently I wrote this a while ago sorry I just read forward and started

laughing and then the last one is not dying so so far so good oh my gosh I have like a

list of things that I want this in this camera this camera is lovely thank you so much for

being there camera.

But I do want a better camera in the future I want one that I can see the screen so I

am working on that slowly slowly slowly but surely Alabama Shakes apparently I like a

song or two of them and I never look them up so I told myself to you and I still haven't

Oh my God I wrote like an entire script for a video and I hate this video ideas for

I will read some of it right now just know that this is a stupid video idea that I will

never ever make because it is just I cannot I cannot adult thing thing problem with Jason

Rivera already starting off amazing credit vs. credit hours you would think that credit

and credit hours would be the same thing it because they both have the word credit well

that is what I thought as well it is a thing you have for money when you are talking about

credit when you are talking about credits can only can be very important this means

that I was writing this at like midnight and I could not get this idea out of my head for

some reason so I had to write about it and this none of it makes sense coconut analogy

coconuts are like really bad tasting onions I don't even like the taste of onions I don't

know what 345 movies that I wanted to watch and this was in January of 2015 and they are

called big eyes Pride Normal Heart Theory of Everything and then the beginning Ellen's

special that is all I have for you guys this week I do not know if you guys enjoyed me

reading these but there is no more on here so until like a couple of years from now no

more stuff from absolutely nothing I'm getting a new phone soon so maybe that is what I will

get new phone memos and then we will start again from there. The somethingest thing that happened

o me this week is taking all of my Christmas stuff down I swear to God the garland

that was up there drove me nuts when I was taking it down because it is on my floor now

and have a vacuum yet no.

I hope you have just the most wonderful week and keep learning.

A while ago someone actually no no no no no no

- And then when the Kandi subject came up,

some new information came about that was said.

Just kind of disturbed me just a little bit.

- She mentioned that she was tired of you being phony

and fake or acting like you were sad that Apollo

was going to jail because you were already

dating somebody and you had-- - Oh, yeah.

- Somebody that you wanted to marry.

- Really?

Well, it's interesting to me that Kandi

doesn't have more to take up her time, like being a mother,

than to talk about what she and I discussed.

But, you know, the grave you dig for me,

you better dig a double one, because you'll fall in it first.

I don't know why Kandi is so angry at me.

If we are friends, I'm not going to try to hurt you.

Now I feel like you're just being malicious.

You've sicced your homemade thugs

that you call employees on me.

It just continues, like--

- What I hate happened is that, after their conversation,

it left that space. - Yeah.

- Those details left that space.

It came to you, Sheree, Kenya, and Cynthia,

and now Shamea knows this whole conversation.

- On top of all that,

you left all the little details of your friend Shamea.

- What is she talking about?

- Shamea, talking about the fact that you had

liked her husband back in the day.

- Well, people say Shamea sleep with everybody husband,

but who's talking about that?

- Do what? - Yeah they are.

- Her and Kandi and Todd they like to f---.

- You a motherf---ing liar. You knew that?

- Yes, they're really close. - But you think that too?

- I mean... - Yes.

She do them both. She do them both.

Andis ShowEdge Clipper Review - Duration: 1:25.

COURTNEY: Hi, I'm Courtney from Marketing, and today I'm going to review

the Andis ShowEdge Clippers.

I really love these clippers.

I've used several other models from the Andis brand, and these are by far my favorite.

They have a high-powered rotary motor that makes clipping fast and easy.

The high-power motor in these clippers is really efficient, so it helps them stay cool

without overheating.

These clippers come with a ShowEdge blade, which is made from Carburized steel.

This blade lasts a lot longer than other clippers, keeping them sharper longer, so you can clip

more of the horse with one blade.

These clippers are also super lightweight so they're easy to use, and they don't make

your arm tired the longer you use them.

You can use them in two different speeds - on the fast setting speed, or the slower speed

for the sensitive areas.

(blade sound)

This clipper is perfect for anyone looking for a high-powered body clipper that can get

through a thick winter coat without the weight of some of those heavier body clippers.

While using these clippers, you should occasionally take a break and brush the hair off, then

apply some oil.

That'll help the motor run efficiently and keep the blade sharp.

You can also use the Andis Blade Care or Cool Care, which are lubricants and blade wash

to maintain the life of the clipper blade.

Another great thing about these clippers is that you can change the blade, and they're

compatible with other clippers made by Andis.

I'm Courtney, and the Andis ShowEdge Clippers are one of my top choices for body clipping.

S. Korea to maintain hardline policy against N. Korea this year - Duration: 2:23.

South Korea's foreign policy makers briefed the acting president on how they plan to deal

with the reclusive regime up North.

Connie Kim starts us off with their main focus when it comes to this year's North Korea policy.

The main focus of South Korea's security policy for 2017 will be to continue pressuring North

Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, the current acting president, was briefed on Wednesday

by the foreign affairs and unification ministries on their blueprints for the new year,... which

focus on cooperation with the nation's allies and targeting Pyongyang's weakest points in

order to bring about change.

"North Korea is trying to throw South Korea into chaos with its repeated provocations,

threats and peace offensive.

The government will stick to its North Korea policy of holding a vision for a peaceful

reunification and pressuring the North to give up its nuclear program.

At the same time, Seoul must garner international support for a reunified Korean peninsula."

South Korea will continue to limit North Korea's access to funds through an export cap on its

coal and minerals, as stated in the latest UN resolution, and seek to persuade other

nations to impose unilateral sanctions on the North.

Seoul will also work with the incoming Trump administration to maintain the current hardline

policy against North Korea.

Over the coming year, South Korea will also focus on targeting North Korea's abysmal human

rights record and seek ways to funnel information into the regime.

Seoul says it will bring up the issue of holding Kim Jong-un responsible for the regime's human

rights abuses and seek to shed more light on the awful conditions endured by North Korean

workers abroad.

These activities are expected to intensify this year when South Korea launches a planned

North Korean human rights foundation.

Reunification will be another focus for Seoul this year.

South Korea plans to work on reviewing the status of separated families, educating students

about reunification and holding commemorative events on dates of historical significance.

"With these plans as a guide, the administration is seeking to keep up the pressure on North

Korea while also laying a foundation for reunification.

Connie Kim, Arirang News."

S. Korea to launch special unit to strike at N. Korea's wartime leadership - Duration: 1:48.

The nation's defense minister outlined a plan to beef up the country's capabilities to better

counter threats from Pyongyang.

According to our Kim Hyun-bin it includes the establishment of a special unit capable

of striking the communist state's wartime command structure.

During a briefing for Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn on Wednesday,...

Defense Minister Han Min-koo said the military will focus this year on countering North Korea's

weapons of mass destruction including its nukes and missiles.

Han said that its military will set up a special infiltration brigade focused on paralyzing

Pyongyang's wartime command structure.

The minister also offered an update on the weapons grade plutonium and highly enriched

uranium that the North has in its nuclear arsenal.

Seoul estimates that Pyongyang holds some 40 kilograms of weapons grade plutonium, which

is capable of developing four to eight nuclear weapons.

Seoul also plans to speed up the planned implementation of South Korea's key weapons systems by a

couple of years to better counter the North.

"To better counter the threats posed by North Korea's weapons of mass destruction, we will

enhance the South Korea-U.S. extended deterrence policy as well as our three-stage plan, which

includes both retaliatory and defense methods."

The three-stage plan includes the Korean Air and Missile Defense system, the Kill Chain

pre-emptive strike system and the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation plan, which aims

to take out key military facilities in the North during an imminent threat.

Han also said that the deployment of the U.S. advanced missile defense system THAAD will

be installed as planned in the middle of the year.

"South Korea is also planning to expand its military cooperation with Japan to better

defend against the threats from North Korea.

Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News."

[ENG CC] Best 2016 Affordable Makeup + Brushes - Duration: 8:01.

Hi This is Suy

Today I want to show you makeup tutorial on what I am wearing right now

I wanted to do Christmas and NYE makeup

but I know I am very late......

I feel like I haven't filmed a makeup tutorial so I am excited

I did this look with my 2016 favorite affordable makeup and brushes

I wish I could tell you prices on each item but.........

This thing is I don't remember everything and

you know prices are very different between Korean and the US

So I am not sure if it is meaningful to write them down in the description box

Anyway I will list all the products that I mentioned in the description box for you

If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

So let's get started!

I personally don't like silicon based primier

but I really enjoyed using it

It lightly brighten up my skin and is very good for pores

I love this color concealer from Soap&Glory

It blends very well that I used it even in the busy morning

My skin tone is pretty yellow so the lavender is perfect for me

I recently bought this foundation but I have been using it every day

It is similar to matte that is hydrating

but the finish is more matte and it has better coverage

and...of course it is cheaper!!

I got this sponge from Ricky's which is a store in the US has a lot of affordable beauty products

It is just as good as an expensive beauty blender.

I love it

Good side of using a sponge or blender when you apply foundation is that

You can create such a natural nice looking skin

I literally pat it for over 3 minutes to have the foundation completely absorb into my skin

I had been loving to use power type brow products

but I have tried this gel type brow products that actually used quite a lot

It blends very well and I like the color for my brows

I just need to be careful not to pick too much products

I brought this brow mascara from Korea and I am still using it

I started using again after I changed my hair colour

I would repurchase it again and again

I don't normally use eye primer but I like this a lot because it dries quickly

It is very inexpensive and eye shadow sticks a ll day long

I am surprise that I haven't hit the pan!

I LOVE all of the matte eye shadows from Etude House

They have such beautiful matte shadow that blends very well

I like to use this eye shadow for contouring with this brush

If you are beginner, touch under your cheek bone before start doing it

try not to bring it too much inside of your face or your skin will look darker

To contour your nose use contouring color that has lighter than the one used outside of the face

This brush was perfect for contouring. I love it

I like this pressed powder because it has a good coverage

I always bring it with me in my bag

I pat it on around eyes and nose

I used this so much......it looks gross

This is my all time favorite base shadow I highly recommend this

You might watch my recent haul video that I said this eye shadow palette is amazing

It is a versatile palette and I even used it for highlighting my nose

Blends amazingly and so pigmented

This Covergirl concealer is the best to highlight under my eyes

also to cover hyper pigmentation from eyeglasses nose pads

even I apply after I set my concealer

it never gets cakey

Wet n Wild brushes are very inexpensive and high quality

I washed them so many times but it is still like a brand new

I love ALL of the colourpop eye shadows especially Kathleenlights

It's a beautiful metallic copper pigment

Pigmentation is such powerful and it's great for warm tone makeup

This brush is also my all time favorite brush to blend eye shadows

I like Colourpop gel liners

it doesn't smudge and very pigmented

but maybe because it is so soft, it breaks quiet easily

other than that I love them

I fill my tight live with black

and create a winged liner with brown gel pencil

So many people love NYX Jumbo pencil

I like this Burgundy color so much it looks so beautiful on my lower lash line

and under my winged liner

I use short and dense brush to blend it out since I am going to blend under my eyes

I use this highlight shadow on my nose and Cupid's bow

it is a stunning looking shadow and blends heavenly!

My nose looks really higher than before and looks very natural

I like to highlight only from the middle part of my nose to the end

because it looks more natural and higher rather than highlight entire bridge of my nose

I already rave about this mascara in my other video

I comb my lashes a little bit because I am going to use false lashes

If you are not a false lashes wearer, I would suggest cut it in half and put them only on outer part of your eyes

that way you still get a natural look with bigger eyes

I only have and use Revlon liquid liner haha

I have gone through so many of this

I like the color and it stays forever! never smudges

This is a such affordable eye shadow palette

The quality is just as good as any high end eye shadows

This glitter is amazing on your inner corner of your eyes

It has pretty big chunks of glitter but I love it!!

I have been using almost everyday!

As you may know, B&H is also one of affordable brands

I love this palette

it has 10 different colors so inexpensive

Brush is also from B&H

It is very pigmented so you need to be careful but blends very well

This is a new matte lip color from Revlon

It's so pretty that I wanted to buy all the colours

It's so creamy and doesn't dry even though it's matte

Last products I love in 2016 is this nail polish

Covergirl's nail polishes are so affordable and I wear this at work all the time

Okay this is all for 2016 affordable makeup and brushes favorite

Hope you enjoyed!

In 2017 I want to be positive and I truly believe positive thoughts changes one's mind and life

This is my new year resolution :-)

Be happy and loved :D

Love you and see you in my next video! Bye~~~
