Before Young Pappy Dropped tracks like Shooters, 2 of Everything, Homicide and Killa
Before surviving a string of shootings targeting the up and coming rapper,
Before Young Pappy lost his life on May 29th, 2015, murdered by rival gang members,
Young Pappy grew up in the north side of Chicago, an aspiring drill rapper, who had practiced
his craft from the tender age of just 4 years old.
He's been cited by the likes of Lil Bibby and Montana of 300 as one of the best rappers
in Chicago, one who might easily have cracked the mainstream if it weren't for his untimely
passing.
Much debate still swirls surrounding the circumstances of his death, with many painting the shooting
as a response to the mockery he made of rival gangs in his lyrics.
Others, like his close friends, and mother, Ingrid, see it differently.
They tell the story of a young artist embracing a gangster image to help build a rap career
and escape the streets, but was then murdered by rivals who were jealous of his talent.
My name is Michael McCrudden, documenting the life and carer of Young Pappy prior to
is tragic passing, here for you on Before They
Were Gone.

YOUNG PAPPY was born Shaquon Jerome Thomas on May 10th, 1995 in Chicago, Illinois, and
raised primarily by his mother, Ingrid Thomas.
Growing up on the North Side of the city, in Uptown, Edgewater, and Rogers Park, Shaquon
first started rapping when he was just four years old.
He was taught by his older brother, Ryan, who is still rapping today under the name
BuDouble.
Young Shaquon continued to develop a passion for hip hop, and mastered his freestyle skills.
As early as 2007, when Young Pappy was just 12 years old, he began uploading his music
to platforms like Spinrilla and YouTube.
While Young Pappy developed as a rapper throughout his teen years, he also seems to have gotten
into street life, joining the notorious Gangster Disciples.
His crew, in particular, were about 20 members of the Gangster Disciple faction then known
as the the Insane Cutthroat Gangers.
Today, they are known as the Pooh Bear Gang, or PBG, in honour of one of numerous fallen
members, Pooh Bear Sanders.
The gang has long running feuds with the Conservative Vice Lords and the Black P Stones.
The police, the media, and Pappy's own music help to paint him as a serious street hustler.
But his mother, Ingrid, tells a different story.
"That wasn't who he was," she said, "It's a mode of survival."
Ingrid claims that the Uptown neighbourhood she raised her son in was not as dangerous
as reporters painted it to be, and that her son's gangster persona, Young Pappy, was not
the real Shaquon.
Those closest to him seem to consistently paint Young Pappy as an artist who was shot
down more out of jealousy for his rap talents than for his gang connections.
And sure enough, his rap sheet is not exactly what you would expect of a dangerous gang
member.
Shaquon's first run in with the law began in eighth grade, when he was arrested after
school for having weed on him.
School authorities wanted to expel him, but Ingrid fought to keep him enrolled.
He would then continue to get picked up on minor charges like possession of weed, reckless
conduct, trespassing, theft, and disorderly conduct, and with his entry into the Juvenile
Justice system, things began to devolve.
And things got worse when Ingrid and Shaquon's father got divorced.
According to Ingrid, Shaquon was mesmerized by rap and gang culture, and adopted the persona
of Young Pappy to help develop his musical brand.
But aside from some minor charges, that image was more or less just an act.
"When did that ever become something new in the rap game?"
She asked, "They lie, they build up a persona to get people to buy into the image so they
can make money."
At the same time, he did get into some more serious trouble with the law.
In 2013, he was convicted of felony weapon possession and sentenced to two years probation.
He was then found in violation of probation and sentenced to a year in prison, and in
later years, he would go on to be charged with a felony drug charge and be involved
in a five hour standoff against a SWAT team at his Edgewater home.
Either way, the gangster image, paired with his talents as a rapper, did in fact start
to pay off . He dropped a few music videos on youtube throughout 2013, which would receive
hundreds of thousands of views.
Competition would be his earliest to eventually exceed a million, dropped on December 16th,
2013.
As his career began to bubble, so did the animosity directed toward him, for whatever
reason, from rival gangs.
He would soon be the target of numerous shootings.
In February of 2014, he was at a McDonald's restuarant at Pratt boulevard and Clark Street.
A masked gunman entered and began shooting at Shaquon.
He, and three other teens were hit, but Shaquon managed to escape with his life.
A 17 year old bystander, Markeyo Carr, was not so lucky.
He was shot in the head while running away, and fell dead in the parking lot.
After the incident, Young Pappy tweeted,
"Im still here"
In March of 2014, he dropped 2 Cups, which would go on to receive well over 7 million
views by the time of this recording.
While that video began to pick up views, the police seemed to believe that Young Pappy's
music was to blame for the violence in his neighbourhood.
In 2014, 48 people were shot and 14 died in Rogers Park, Edgewater, and Uptown.
Former Rogers Park Police Commander Thomas Waldera called Young Pappy's music videos
"technological kerosene", which fuelled the gang violence.
Within days of the release of 2 Cups, Young Pappy would be in court on a reckless conduct
charge, and sentenced to 60 days in Jail.
After his release, he got to work promoting what would be his first official mixtape.
On July 13th, the rapper would once again be the target in a shooting.
This time, he was walking down Devon Avenue, near his dad's house, when an unknown passenger
was allegedly ordered by Conservative Vice Lord Eric Vaughn to shoot Young Pappy.
Once again, Pappy Survived, and escaped the shooting unscathed.
But a 28 year old photographer, Wil Lewis, who was taking photos of the rapper at the
time, caught the volley of bullets meant for Shaquon, and died as a result.
As for Young Pappy, he got right back to work on his music, and 2 Cups Part 1 one was released
on August 21, 2014 to Spinrilla.
His more explicitly violent titled song, Killa, would follow in November of 2014, and become
his most popular music video ever.
At the time of this recording, it has nearly 24 million views, and counting.
2015 would bring more music and more violence for Young Pappy.
At one point, he returned to the same McDonald's where he was shot and almost killed the year
prior.
This time, he got into a fight, which moved outside and down the street, and the man he
was fighting ended up with a bullet in his leg.
Young Pappy was charged with reckless conduct.
On April 17th, 2015, Young Pappy dropped the official video for his song Homicide, which
continued to gain him traction, with over 9 million views at the time of this recording.
His second mixtape, 2 Cups Part 2 of Everything was released on May 9th, 2015.
The night before that, he threw a wild mixtape release party, and things got out of hand.
Shots were fired during the festivities, leading to a SWAT team showing up at his house.
Young Pappy and 30 others were charged with misdemeanour disorderly conduct.
On May 22nd, 2015, Young Pappy dropped Shooters, featuring Lil Shawn.
This song would become the one most associated with his death.
One week later, Young Pappy's life would be tragically cut short.
Around 1 35 am on Friday, May 29th, he was with a friend in the 4800 block of North Kenmore
Avenue, when a gunman walked up and started shooting.
Shaquon was hit twice in the back and rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
He was pronounced dead at 3 01 am.
The media mainly reported the killing as a response to his lyrics' mockery of rival gangs.
The Chicago Tribune pointed to his song Homicide, and quoted the lyrics,
"we pop out at night but you can still get smoked at noon.
... Head shots rolling up on the dead opps.
I don't lack, I got my gat."
They also, along with numerous others, quoted lyrics from the song shooters, like,
"Gotta whole lotta shooters on the squad, gotta squad full of shooters"
"If I catch an op, I'm smokin them"
and
"You don't even know how to shoot.
I ain't saying I'm a pro pro when I shoot, but the opps can't flex on my name."
But according to Young Pappy's loved ones, that story is an over simplification.
According to Morrocco Vaughn,
"They act like he made a video taunting a rival gang and the rival gang came and killed
him.
That's not what happened.
That's what happened with Lil Jojo.
So they tried to replicate the story.
Violence in the City of Chicago is a hot topic, so they try to make things neatly fit into
that box.
This don't fit into that box."
At the time of his death, Young Pappy was working on a third mixtape, 2 cups Part 3.
It was released post houmously in July of 2016.
As for the rest of the story, well, his story lives on in his music and loved ones, because
this before they were gone.

and this time, we're cooking up
some unforgettable German treats --
and that includes my favorite sausage anywhere --

We're in Frankfurt and Nuernberg.
Thanks for joining us.

Germany is Europe's economic powerhouse,
and you feel that in its great cities,
like Frankfurt and Nuernberg.
These are examples
of how Germany has put the 20th century behind it
and learned that the most effective way to be powerful
is to be constructive.
In Frankfurt, a city of contrasts,
we see today's Germany --
a vibrant mix of the new and the old
sprinkled with people-friendly zones,
parks, and a stunning riverfront.
Then, in Nuernberg,
we marvel at remnants of Germany's First Reich
-- with the Holy Roman Emperor's castle --
and we learn of Hitler and the Third Reich --
with the architecture of a megalomaniac.
Finally, we go underground
for a peek at history seldom seen.
Dominating the north of Europe is Germany,
the size of Montana.
We start where many trans-Atlantic flights stop,
in Frankfurt,
and then travel a couple hours to Nuernberg.
For an honest look at today's Germany,
travelers need to venture beyond the ruined castles
and cute cobbled towns.
Frankfurt may be low on Old World charm,
but it offers a great look at no-nonsense, modern Germany.
Ever since the early Middle Ages,
people have gathered here to trade.
Today, cosmopolitan Frankfurt, nicknamed "Bankfurt,"
is a trading hub of a united Europe,
home to the European Central Bank
and a center for global commerce.
With its trading heritage came people from around the world.
You'll notice the strikingly multi-cultural flavor of the city.
A quarter of its 700,000 residents
carry foreign passports.
Frankfurt is often avoided by tourists
who consider it just a business and transportation hub.
But with its modern energy,
Frankfurt is a unique and entertaining city
well worth a look.
The city, with its forest of skyscrapers
perched on the banks of the Main River,
has been dubbed Germany's "Main-hattan."
While it leads the country in high-rises,
mostly bank headquarters,
it has plenty of people-friendly parks.
In fact, Frankfurters boast
that a third of their city is green space.
This park is part of a greenbelt that circles the old center
and marks the site
of Frankfurt's long-gone medieval fortifications.
Today that greenbelt weaves
through Frankfurt's banking district.
And history hides among these trees.
The Marshall Plan --
that massive American aid program
that helped Germany rebuild after World War II --
was administered from this building.
After World War II, Germany was in ruins,
and its economy was in chaos.
In 1948,
the United States gave it a complete currency transfer.
It was like a blood transfusion --
literally printing up the new German Deutsche Marks,
shipping them across the Atlantic,
and, from here in Frankfurt,
injecting them directly into the German economy.
That aid helped rebuild Germany,
and it shaped Frankfurt, as well.
And, as if attracted to all that money,
banks naturally grew up right here.
The architecture is striking.
By law, no German worker
can be kept out of natural light for more than four hours.
That's why work environments are filled with windows.
And unlike any skyscraper I've been in,
Germans have office towers with windows that open.
The Main Tower is open to the public
and offers a breath-taking view.
From its rooftop, 650 feet high, you can survey the city.
With new construction nearly obliterating the river
upon which the city was founded,
its ever-expanding skyline
exudes the vitality of the German economy.
In contrast to the glassy skyscrapers,
Frankfurt's train station is a classic.
This late 19th-century glass-and-iron construction
somehow survived the bombs of World War II.
The building's elegant facade
dates from the Industrial Revolution
and shows the pride of that age.
Atlas carries the world,
but only with some heavy-duty modern help
as figures representing steam power and electricity pitch in.
Stepping inside,
you feel the energy of Germany's busiest train station,
where 350,000 travelers catch 1,800 trains every day.
Kaiserstrasse, a grand 19th-century boulevard,
was built to connect the station and the city with style.
Towering above and beyond its fine 100-year-old facades,
and reflecting the glaring modernity
of this ever-changing city,
are the skyscrapers of Frankfurt's banking district.
Frankfurt is full of contrasts.
Just a few blocks away, under those same skyscrapers,
is a red light district with about 20 legal brothels --
the pragmatic result of a policy of tax and regulation
to take the crime
out of a reality that just won't go away.
Just a couple blocks away,
there are fashionable streets lined with top-end boutiques.
People-friendly pedestrian zones
make it easy for both shoppers and diners.
And on a hot day,
people of all ages enjoy the refreshing fountain
fronting Frankfurt's fine opera house.
The many small German-speaking states
finally united into modern Germany in about 1870.
Within a couple of years, Frankfurt,
which helped spearhead the unification movement,
built this fine opera house.
It celebrated both high German culture
and the newly created nation.
While bombed in World War II,
it was rebuilt in the original style.
Mozart, whose operas were a hit here,
and the esteemed Frankfurt writer Goethe
flank the entrance,
reminders that this is a house of both music and theater.
Lunchtime beneath the skyscrapers
can be entertaining
as herds of bankers fill countless restaurants.
This street is nicknamed "Fressgass,"
roughly the "Feeding Street."
As a contrast to the many trendy restaurant chains,
Frankfurt's Kleinmarkthalle, that's "little market hall,"
is a delightful, old-school alternative.
The venerable farmers' market
was saved from developers by a local outcry
and remains a neighborhood favorite.
Explore and enjoy the samples.

-This stall is all about German sausages.
And amid this carnivore's delight hides this,
the city's classic wiener, the frankfurter.
My best market tip?
Find the most popular eatery, get local advice,
and go for the town specialty.
Just around the corner is Romerberg,
Frankfurt's old main square,
lined with half-timbered buildings.
Because of its historic importance,
it's one of the few bits of the old town rebuilt after the war
in its original medieval style.
On a sunny day, people head for the Main River.
A centerpiece of the riverside park
is this welcoming 19th century iron bridge.
Enjoy the lively scene along the riverbanks
in the shadow of Frankfurt's towering skyscrapers.
Taking a riverside stroll, I'm struck by how Germans,
while so productive in the workplace,
are also expert at relaxation.
From Frankfurt,
trains zip travelers to all points.
Heading southeast,
in a couple hours we cross into the state of Bavaria
and arrive in Nuernberg.
Nuernberg was one of Germany's, in fact Europe's,
leading cities 500 years ago
with an imposing Imperial Castle.
The city's formidable walls were state-of-the-art --
they were redesigned from square towers,
which worked just fine before the threat of cannon fire,
to round ones --
so enemy cannonballs were more likely to glance off
without doing any damage.
Back then, with 80 water wheels
powering mills along its now sleepy river,
Nuernberg was an industrial marvel.
The scenic remnants of its hard medieval past
are now just an added dimension
of a delightfully people-friendly historic center.
90% of downtown Nuernberg was destroyed in 1945.
To rebuild, city fathers had a choice --
go entirely modern like Frankfurt did --
that was the Manhattan plan --
or maintain the pre-war footprint and rebuild modern
while preserving the traditional character.
That was Nuernberg's choice.
With one of Europe's largest pedestrian zones,
the city of half a million has the charm of a smaller town.
Playful street art,
a series of bridges with scenic river views,
and no traffic noise
make it a joy to experience.
Nuernberg is dominated by its mighty castle.
In the Middle Ages, Holy Roman Emperors,
Europe's most powerful rulers, stayed here when in town.
The Holy Roman Emperor ruled much of Europe
for over a thousand years.
The institution was finally ended by Napoleon in 1806.
The emperor ruled a vast realm --
it was bigger than today's Germany --
but it was never centralized like France or England.
Rather than inheriting his power,
he was elected by the top bishops and nobles of the day.
They were called "prince electors."
The emperor had to keep on the move
and didn't have a real capital city.
While the emperor claimed supreme authority
inherited direct from the emperors of ancient Rome,
historians like to joke that the Holy Roman Empire
was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.
The most famous of these medieval emperors
was Charlemagne,
shown here in a painting
by Nuernberg artist Albrecht Duerer.
Charlemagne, or Charles the Great,
was crowned by the pope in the year 800.
When ruling from Nuernberg,
the emperor would have received visiting delegations
in the castle's Lower Hall.
It's empty of furniture because the imperial court was mobile.
Each city would scramble to suitably furnish
its royal quarters before the emperor arrived.
The castle's 800-year-old church is Romanesque in style
and gives a peek at how structured
even medieval society's top 1% was.
It has a triple-Decker design:
The lower nobility worshiped from the lower level,
the upper nobility worshiped at this level,
and the emperor,
he worshiped above everybody else --
from the balcony.

As effective as the castle fortifications were,
there was always an ultra-secure refuge of last resort --
the towering keep.
And security required more than stony towers.
Any good castle
needs a secure water source within its walls.
And when your castle sits on a high rock,
you need a very deep well.
This castle illustrates that in a fun and memorable way.

-Even without understanding much of our guide's German,
he made it really clear that this well goes way, way down.

-Nuernberg's Germanic National Museum
is dedicated to sharing the cultural history
of the German-speaking world.
For German history buffs, this museum alone --
with a vast and gorgeously presented collection --
makes a visit to Nuernberg worthwhile.
When it comes to Germany's reputation
for fine craftsmanship,
its passion for quality goes way back.
These finely crafted,
centuries-old precision instruments
were intricate, innovative, and artful.
This is the world's oldest surviving globe,
crafted by a Nuernberger.
Since it dates from 1492, the Americas are missing.
While they understood that the world was round,
the Western Hemisphere
was still just a huge and mysterious sea.
The delicate, wooden Nuernberg Madonna
is also 500 years old.
This intimate, anonymous carving of the favorite hometown girl
was a symbol of the city for centuries.
The German painter Lucas Cranach
was famous for portraits of his contemporaries,
like the great German reformer Martin Luther.
Cranach also painted poignant psychological studies --
paintings that came with a message.
In The Ill-Matched Couple,
the lecherous old man thinks he's got the young maiden.
But she looks knowingly out at us
as if to say "he's a fool, and he'll get nowhere with me."
The great painter Albrecht Duerer
worked in Nuernberg around the year 1500.
This is a self-portrait of that ultimate German artist.
Duerer, who was from the same generation
as Michelangelo and Leonardo,
was in tune with the Renaissance.
He was a genius with a curious mind,
a love of nature, and a passion for realism.
After traveling to Italy
and seeing how artists were becoming well-paid and respected,
rather than anonymous laborers,
he returned to Germany
bringing the spirit of the Renaissance with him.
He painted this portrait of his mother
when he was a teenager.
While just 19,
his passion for realistic detail is already apparent.
This painting of Duerer's teacher
was done after his experience in Italy.
Its realism was unprecedented in Germany,
and it's signed.
Again, now the artist will be respected,
and he proudly included his initials, A.D.
Duerer was a master at producing engravings
from finely etched metal plates.
The detail and realism, a trademark of Duerer,
is extraordinary.
As he was famous in his own time,
and because many prints could be made from a single master plate
and therefore sold affordably,
the engraving technique enabled Duerer to become
the first best-selling artist in history.
And he made a lot of money --
enough to purchase this impressive mansion
beneath the castle.
Today, it's a fine museum
about the life of perhaps Germany's greatest painter.
A visit here includes a workshop
where you can learn about Duerer's craft.
It's with these tools
that the artist engraves an image into the copper plate.
Visitors are treated to a demonstration
of making a print from the plate.
The subject is a hare.
Duerer was famous for his vivid portrayals of the natural world.
-Wow.
-To be able to enjoy
such beautiful, yet mass-produced art
must have been a marvel 500 years ago.
A few blocks away,
towering nearly 300 feet above the pedestrians,
is St. Lawrence Church.
When emperors paraded into town,
they'd approach its magnificent facade head-on.
Stepping inside, you feel the splendor of that age.
Suspended over the altar is the Annunciation,
by the great Nuernberg woodcarver, Veit Stoss.
Carved in 1517,
it shows the angel Gabriel telling Mary
that she'll be giving birth to the Messiah.
Startled, she drops her prayer book.
The dove represents the Holy Spirit.
And God, looking as powerful as a Holy Roman Emperor,
looks down.
This lacy tabernacle is rich enough
to hold the consecrated Communion wafer,
which Catholics consider "the body of Christ."
And supporting the tower on his shoulders
is the artist who created it, Adam Kraft,
gripping his noble tools with a proud confidence.
Again, this was around 1500,
and the humanistic spirit of the Renaissance
was moving into Germany.
While this church along with the rest of the city
was heavily bombed in World War II,
much of its art survived
thanks to heroic and creative efforts by its citizens.
One part of Nuernberg
that avoided bomb damage was underground --
its vast and long-established network
of waterways, tunnels, and beer cellars.
They were outfitted as air-raid shelters.
During bombing raids,
tens of thousands of locals took refuge down here.
It's also where countless art treasures,
both local and looted, were safely hidden away.
To learn more about this,
and not get forever lost down here,
we're joined by my friend and fellow tour guide
Thomas Schmechtig.
-So, Nuernberg was bombed quite late in the war,
and we saw what happened to other cities,
so we actually prepared for the war
and reconverted these old beer cellars into air-raid shelters.
That, for example, where guards used to be
who protected the artworks
which were stored in here during the second world war.
-The Nazis hid crates of great art in many different rooms
in this sprawling underground network.
-This is one of the many rooms down here
which were filled up with art.
Nuernberg was back then
nicknamed "the treasure chest of the German Empire."
Plus, the Nazis looted lots of artworks.
-From countries that they conquered,
and they brought it here?
-Correct.
For example, right in this room,
they had the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor.
-So, right here in these cellars
were some of the great treasures of European culture.
-Correct.
We didn't just stash the art treasures down here.
They were carefully packed.
For example, here, Rick,
you see the wonderful stained-glass windows
from our St. Lawrence Church.
They were taken out pane by pane
and then put into those wooden crates.
The humidity was very dangerous for the artworks,
so they air conditioned the whole place in here.
-So, this huge duct was made in anticipation of the war?
-Yes, and already in 1939, before the war broke out.
-The bombing, of course, eventually came,
and this surviving underground network
became the foundation for rebuilding the city.
-So it did make sense
to rebuild the city on its original footprints.
We have miles of underground which survived the war.
They date back to the Middle Ages --
that, for example is an old water conduit system.
-Nuernberg, so steeped in German history,
was nicknamed the most German of German cities.
That's one reason it was a favorite of Hitler's.
A short tram ride from the center
is a collection of important Nazi sites.
When Hitler took power in 1933,
he made Nuernberg's Zeppelin Field
the site of his enormous Nazi party rallies.
The stark remains of this massive gathering place
are thought-provoking.
For several years,
increasingly elaborate celebrations
of Nazi culture, ideology, and power
took place right here.
-Imagine Hitler stepping out of that door,
overlooking the massive 200,000 people being lined up.
He used propaganda to create a new community --
in fact, we even have a word for it.
It's called " Volksgemeinschaft ."
-The chilling images
from Leni Riefenstahl's documentary
Triumph of the Will
were filmed at the 1934 Nuernberg rallies
and then shown in every theater and schoolroom in the country.
The goal? To bring a visual celebration
of the power of the Nazi state to every person in Germany.
Looming over a now peaceful lake
is another remnant of the dictator's megalomania --
his huge yet unfinished Nazi Congress Hall.
Hitler was enamored with the Roman Colosseum.
He had his Congress Hall modeled on that
but built much bigger.
-Imagine, 50,000 leading Nazis in here.
One third higher, covered by a roof.
A window inside the ceiling,
sunshine would have fallen down to the podium.
Once a year, one speech, of Adolf Hitler.
Adolf Hitler liked huge buildings.
He was a big fan
of the architectural style named Neoclassicism.
The idea was to make the individual feel small.
-This really makes me feel small here.
-Yeah, you give away the responsibility of your life,
and you get something back in return.
That is, a bright new future.
-The Nazi Documentation Center fills one wing of the hall.
This superb museum does its best to answer the question
"How could Germany's Nazi nightmare have happened?"
It traces the evolution of the Nazi movement,
focusing on how it somehow both energized and terrified
the German people.
This is not a WWII or a Holocaust museum.
In fact, those events are barely mentioned.

Charles Hadlock: "So at Michigan State, here in the finance department,
even though we're a relatively small department,
we have an unusual breadth of courses
that lead to different potential career interests
in the finance field.
I think there's really some unique differentiators
between our program and a lot of the competition
in the one-on-one attention
and the ability to really customize someone's
career interests to the curriculum that we have,
working directly with a faculty member.
We really prepare students in a lot of different areas,
both traditional corporate finance,
but more generally also areas of financial services,
investments, hedge fund asset management,
and I think we're quite uniquely positioned
because, since we have a small faculty
and a lot of faculty-student interaction,
we can really help students fine tune their curriculum
and the courses, of which we offer many,
to their particular career interests.
The finance concentration is an extremely valued skill set.
As you move up in an organization
in any type of leadership capacity,
students really need to have those financial skills,
they have to understand financial metrics,
where value's being created,
as you move up in organizations
there's lots of decisions about making acquisitions,
about divestiture, selling off parts of the organization,
and you need the tools of finance
to really think about those issues,
to measure them, to look at the marketplace
and understand where those decisions
have created values for others and where they haven't,
as you get to a point where you just have to be able
to think very big picture about what drives firm values,
why are firms bought and sold,
why are some firms profitable and others aren't,
and major strategic decisions having to do
with bankruptcies, large refinancings,
going private, going public,
these are all issues that firms have to deal with
at the highest level, at the top of the organization,
and it's very useful even if one's gonna start
their career out somewhere lower to understand
how all the pieces fit together.
I think it makes folks much more effective managers,
even relatively early in their career,
when they can see the parts and how they come together.
And in my view, finance is really
the ideal training for that."

The Book of Ephesians is a fabulous, practical study of
telling us how God wants His sons and daughters to walk
in the world in which we live.
Look at it.
Chapter 1 of Ephesians tells us that we are in Christ.
If we've received Him, this is what we have;
this is who we are-tremendous thing.
And then the word "walk" is all the way through this.
Look at Chapter 2 Verse 10: "For we are His workmanship..."
He carved us out.
"...created in Jesus Christ..."
A new carving, a new person, for good works which God prepared
beforehand so that we would walk in them.
He has given us gifts and abilities and put us here at
this time in this place, regardless of how confusing our
life is; regardless of how thrilling our life is.
We are His workmanship, and we are to walk and use that which
He's given us at this point in life.
Then Chapter 2, we talk about our walk,
for we are His workmanship.
And then look over in Chapter Number 3.
He still talks about, Verse 14: "For this reason, I bow my knees
to the Father from whom every family in Heaven
and on earth derives its name."
Verse 17: "So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through
faith that you, being rooted and grounded in love be able to
comprehend with all the saints, all the other Christians,
what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth,
and to know the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge
that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God."
Oh, that's amazing.
The Chapter 4 Verse 1: "I therefore, the prisoner of the
Lord beseech you that you walk..."
there's our word "...in a manner worthy of the calling
as Christians with which you're called."
How do we walk?
With humility.
All humility.
With gentleness.
With patience, showing, showing,
showing tolerance for one another in love.
That's how we are to walk.
Look at Verse 17: "So this I say, and affirm together with
the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles,
unbelievers walk in the futility of their mind."
No, we walk intelligently.
Then look at Verse, Chapter Number 5 Verse 2: "And walk in
love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us,
an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma."
When we're walking with Him, there's a fragrant aroma
going out from our lives.
Isn't that interesting?
Beautiful, beautiful figurative language.
Then Verse 15 Chapter 5, Ephesians: "Therefore, be
careful how you walk, not as unwise men and women, but
as wise, making the most of your time because the days are evil."
Verse 17: "So then do not be foolish,
but understand what the will of the Lord is."
So the whole passage-you walk like this, you walk like this...
Then you come to that 18th Verse there in Ephesians 5, and it
says, "Be not drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit."
Now some people have the idea when you're filled with the
Spirit, it's like you're drunk.
Heh, heh-no, no, no!
When you're filled with the Spirit,
it's the opposite of being drunk.
It means you are walking.
You are standing.
You are solid.
You are steadfast.
You have a sense of direction, a sense of purpose.
And that's what it means to be filled with the Spirit.
Now, somebody, "Well, being filled with the Spirit.
That's such a big, fancy church kind of concept.
What does it really mean"?
Paul tells us in the following Verses.
This is a transition in all the Book of Ephesians.
Paul said, "This is how you walk.
This is who you are.
This is how you walk.
This is how you live.
You walk in love, etc...
And then he says, "Be filled with the Spirit."
He has four characteristics to determine whether you and
I are Spirit filled, very simple.
Number one, he says "Speaking."
See it there in the text?
You speak to one another.
By the way, some people have a hard time saying "Hello."
Have you noticed that?
It's not painful.
Some people have a hard time smiling.
Try it!
(Audience laughs).
We speak to one-they're speak, and they're singing!
Oh yeah!
You say, "I don't sing."
How many of you have ever been in a choir in your life?
Would you-ever been in a choir-baby choir, my goodness!
I'm-by the way, you've been in the choir today!
Wayne was leading all of us.
We've been in the choir!
That's what we do.
We sing.
"Well, I don't sing anymore."
Just mouth the words.
"Amazing grace!
How sweet..."
You know, singing!
Speaking!
Saying, thanking is a mark of being spirit filled.
We're thankful.
I'm grateful for this; I'm thankful for that.
I'm thrilled with...
be, have an attitude.
We love to be around people who have a,
a Thanksgiving lifestyle, don't we?
You know people, just, they're just thankful.
The sun came up -"I'm thankful..."
We're thankful for little things...
Thanksgiving is a mark of being filled with the Spirit
-filled the Spirit, like Christ.
Speaking, singing, thank...
Submitting is a mark!
Say, we're to be submissive one to another.
That's to position ourselves under.
Now Paul gives this lofty, theological framework,
and then you know what he breaks out into in Ephesians?
He gets real practical.
He said, "Now you're filled with the Spirit.
You're speaking, you're singing, you're thanking, you're
submitting, and now, this is how a man relates to his wife,
and a wife relates to a man in marriage.
Whoo!
Very practical, isn't it?
Brings it right down to earth.
Then he gets more practical.
He said, "Also, this is how parents relate to children,
and children relates to parents.
Anything simpler than that?
Great counsel...
Then he gets even more practical.
He said, "This is how to employer rates to employees,
and employees relate to an employer."
Very practical.
And you say, "Well, I've got this walk.
I've got this winning walk down,
and because I have the winning walk down, I'm okay..."
but then Paul, right there in the Scripture we've been looking
at in Ephesians Chapter Number 6, he says,
"Finally, be strong in the Lord in the strength of His might.
Put on the full armor of God so that you will be able to stand
firm against the schemes of the Devil."
Now, we've already, if you've been around,
put on three pieces of armor.
Have you noticed it?
But I want you to see what else Paul says.
Look at Verse 16.
I won't even-I know it.
He said, "In addition to this, we got all we need," but Paul
said, "In addition to this, if we're gonna be successful in the
battle against evil in this world, in your life and in my
life, he says, and he adds three more pieces of armor.
These are symbols...
By the way, remember what this is.
We're putting on Jesus Christ, aren't we?
We take off ourselves, and we put on Christ.
This is a symbol of what we have when we put on Christ.
And then he says, "In addition to this..."
What is this about?
Look at John.
I love this.
John-over here, it tells us something really
-John Chapter 14 Verse 20.
Jesus says, "In that day, you will know that I am in
My Father, and you in Me, and I in you."
Now watch this.
Jesus is saying that when -Jesus says,
"I am in the Father..." right?
Father God, and He's saying, "You are in Me, and I am in
you," He's saying we're doubly protected.
Isn't that terrific?
We're doubly protected!
You know, I'm in Christ, Christ in you,
and we're all in the Father God.
I mean, that is amazing protection.
This is what Paul is saying here.
He's saying, "You've got on these three pieces of armor,"
but said, "in addition to this, if you're really going to stand
and walk in the 21st Century,
you gotta have three other things.
The first thing is, he said,
"You've got to take up the shield of faith."
Now this shield pictured here in the Scripture is not one of
those little old round, Frisbee-like shields, you know?
You see a little round shield there...
Uh-huh.
This shield is about 2.5 feet wide; about 4.5 feet long.
It's almost like picking up a door, you got it?
That's how big that Roman shield was.
And the Roman shield was covered in leather, and therefore,
the shield is there because the fiery darts from the enemy,
the Devil, comes and attacks us.
How did the Romans use that shield?
They would get there,
and they would line up with their legions.
They would take that shield, and they would hide behind that
shield, and they would have a phalanx there.
And they'd lock their shields together
-shield, after shield, after shield...
The next row, shield after shield.
It would go all the way back,
and the flaming arrows would come.
What were those flaming arrows?
They would take cotton, put 'em on an arrow.
They'd dip the cotton in pitch.
It'd be fire, burning slow.
They would slow it, and the arrow would come and where
it would hit, it would splatter-splatter fire.
But you see, they were protected behind that shield.
Let the flaming arrows of the Devil come and attack us,
because this shield is a shield of what?
Faith!
Now we think faith is a weak, weak word.
It's just not a strong word; it's a weak word.
It's not a weak word.
It's not a flimsy word.
It's a strong word.
We say, "Well, reason is strong, and faith is weak."
And therefore, we talk about natural revelation-stay with me!
That's the created order.
And we say, "I can look at the natural revelation, the created
order, and I can come to believe that there's a God."
Okay?
That's reason.
But we look at special revelation-that's the Bible.
We say, "Oh, no, no.
I have to accept the Bible by faith."
Let me show you something.
The best way to understand the difference between reason
and faith is, we use reason to have a faith,
and we use faith to have reason.
They're not opposites; they are complimentary.
Best way to see that is, you're dating someone.
Your wife, husband, and when you're dating,
it's good to use a little reason.
If you fall in love only with your heart, Heaven help you!
Only by appearance-time out!
So we use reason.
We get to know the person; they get to know us,
their habits, their understanding.
There is a reason that involve; and then on the basis of that
reason, we move into a faith.
It's like saying, "I do," and "I will."
We have a reasonable faith.
We come to the altar-"I do, and "I will."
We use our head, and we use our heart as we fall in love.
Our head gives us reason; our heart gives us faith,
and they come together, and we have marriage.
We have a reasonable faith,
and that's important that we understand that.
And so, this shield of faith is strong.
It is a reason faith.
It is a firm faith.
So we pick up the shield of faith that handles all the fiery
darts that he tries to bring into your life-temptations,
and doubts, and frustrations, and anger.
The shield of faith-shield of faith-get behind it!
Then the next thing we pick up is the helmet of salvation.
We put on that helmet, and that says this is who we are.
The helmet protects the mind, the thinking.
It gives us clear thinking.
Don't you like people who think clearly?
I saw Joe Namath on, on television,
a sports talk show.
Remember, if you're on T.V., unless you're on the news
-some news, and unless you have a number on your back,
I'll not see you...
(Audience laughs).
That's just the way I am!
I apologize for that.
People say, "Did you see this"?
Naw, naw, naw, naw...
You haven't got a number on your back, maybe, particularly if
you're from Mississippi-uh, if you got a number on your back,
you know, I may...
I was watching a little sports show, and Joe Namath was one.
I'd heard Joe-Broadway Joe had all the concussions,
and I noticed a few years back, he was slipping.
You know, he wasn't speaking clearly.
His mind was sort of hazy, and I could tell his cognitive ability
had greatly declined, all those concussions.
Then I saw him on this talk show, and man, he was clear and
speaking just candidly and vividly, remembering things.
And in the process, they asked him,
"Joe, what's, what's happened to you"?
And he got in some hyperbaric thing that feeds,
like you go in from, from being a diver would go in?
And oxygen would come?
There's a special treatment they gave to his brain,
and he told the story.
He said, "The whole right side of his brain," he said,
"was darkened when they first tested him.
But they began a new process of putting oxygen in that brain."
He said, "Now they test me.
Both sides of my brain are lighted."
There's oxygen.
There's blood flow there, and there's been a rekindling of
his brain and the stem in there.
And you could tell the way he would speak,
and the way he'd work.
This has great hope for stroke victims.
Has great hope for those who have a series of concussion.
I saw it right there!
This is what happens when we put on the helmet of salvation,
ladies and gentlemen!
All of a sudden, things that were dark are clear!
And God reveals to us, and we think clearly,
and we operate clearly.
The helmet of salvation, we put it on.
We put it on...
And then, what else do we put on?
We really don't put it on.
We pick it up.
We take it out.
That is that sword.
By the way, in most armies of this day, most people are right
handed; they put the scabbard and the sword over here,
and they draw the big sword like that, right?
Not the Romans!
No, no, no!
Not this kind of armor.
The Romans had that big old shield like a door,
and they kept, if they were right handed, the sword here,
and they drew the sword right out like this-bam!
And it was right there.
It was a short thing about 6 or 8 inches long,
and I've heard all my life, people teach on this, "Well, the
sword is the only offensive weapon the Word of God!"
Right?
"The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God."
That's not true!
The sword is an offensive weapon,
but all the armor is too.
Go up against a Roman, hand-to-hand combat.
He's got that shield-bam!
I mean, that's offensive.
He's got those boots of peace-gave like spikes on 'em.
Let me tell you -that's offensive.
He has his helmet on.
Have you ever been head-butted?
Bam!
That's offensive.
He's got this breast plate of righteousness-bam!
He'll get you, and he's got that
sword of the spirit right there-bam!
The Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit.
Now usually in the Bible, the Word of God-you see the word
"logos" in Greece, or "logos" in Greece.
It is the whole Word of God.
It's all that's available to us.
It's like having an arsenal of weapons over here; but the sword
is not-the word here is not "logos," it's "rhema," and it,
it is also another word for the Word, and that is how it is
used, the sword is used in a very personal, direct way.
It's how Jesus used the Bible.
In His temptations, what did He say?
"It is written...it is written..."
And He'd be dealing with the Pharisees or the Sadducees.
He'd say, "As the Bible teaches...
as the Bible teaches..."
Would He not?
All the way through, He used this as truth.
It was the sword.
That's how we use it.
I mean, I had a little battle years ago, with my heart,
and all of a sudden, I'm in a hospital room, and a Verse
come to mind: "Create in me a clean heart, O' Lord!
Renew a right spirit within me."
Bang!
Perfect, wasn't it?
Clean heart, right spirit.
There it was!
Words of God come.
Have you ever started to cross that line, and all of a sudden,
a Scripture will come to you?
Didn't even know you knew it?
Didn't know exactly where it came from?
The quotation?
But it's there?
See, that is a rhema.
It is used personally.
It's putting faith in the action-reasonable faith
in action, and that is that sword that we pull out.
And we win-the sword is two-edged.
It cuts us, and it cuts out.
It's offensive, and it's defensive
as we go through this winning walk.
That's salvation.
Uh, that's Christ!
You say, "Well, I don't know about the Bible..."
Walk through something I think's very important.
Jesus says the Bible is true, right?
Uses the Bible as truth.
The Bible says Jesus is true.
Okay.
But that's circular reasoning, isn't it?
We know everything about Jesus from the Bible-bam.
Jesus says, "I look at the Bible..."
that's circular reasoning, but it's really not when you add
one other element, and that is the Bible itself.
This Bible contains 66 Books, right?
Written by 37 authors, on two continents, written over a
period of 2,000 years, covering a scope of history at least
4,000 years in length.
You would expect different understandings,
different backgrounds.
You'd expect incoherence.
You'd expect conflicts.
You'd expect all kind of things with a book put together like
that, wouldn't you, logically?
But what do you find here?
You find progressive revelation.
You find God progressively revealing Himself
to man over a period of time.
You find truth all the way through here.
You see how prophecy is fulfilled here.
It is predicted here; it is fulfilled over here,
and you see the evolution.
You see the involvement of the progressive knowledge of God
through the Scripture, and you see the thematic,
the theme of it stays absolutely consistent all the way through.
And so we hold up and we see historians have not been able
to disprove one centimeter of this Bible.
Archeologists, as they've dug into the past,
they've only found things that affirm the Scripture,
not anything that rejects the Scripture.
You look at anthropologists.
They study all these tribes, all these ancient groups and sects,
and they see it rings true with the language,
with the understanding of the Scripture.
So you look at the Bible; it stands up as truth!
Therefore, Jesus says the Bible is true.
The Bible says Jesus is truth, and the Bible itself stands up
as irreversible truth, as inerrant truth.
That is not circular reasoning; it is founded there.
And then we look at Jesus and see,
how did He stack up against truth?
He didn't just teach these stuff, and these principles;
He fleshed it out all the way through His death and through
His Resurrection!
That is the reason we can put on this full armor as we're
instructed to and know that we'll be able to do what?
We'll be able to stand!
Stand firm!
(Audience applauds).
I spoke to a group of young parents Wednesday night a week
ago, and I thought of this, and I hadn't thought of it in years.
I went to Mississippi College, a school outside of
Jackson, Mississippi in Clinton,
and once we had Abigail Van Buren to speak to us.
Now you know Dear Abby?
You know-all the newspapers, "Dear Abby" columns.
They'd ask Abby questions, and, and she'd answer them.
And after she got through speaking, they asked her, they
said, "Abby, of all the answers you've given, what answer did
you give that got the most response from other writers"?
She said, "That's easy."
And she told this story.
She said, "I got a letter from a woman in Idaho."
Have to be Idaho...
And, and, and she said that, she said, "Dear Abby, I have always
done my housework in the nude."
And she said, "I do it.
Nobody's at home.
I pull all the drapes, all the blinds."
She said, "I just do my housework in the nude," and she
said, "I just wonder-I told one of my friends about it.
She said, 'That's really weird.
There may be something wrong with you'"
and she said, "I don't know.
Is that okay?
Idaho..."
Abby answers the letter in sort of an ambiguous kind of way, she
said, "Well, you know, you're by yourself doing your housework.
That's what you do.
I don't see any problem...
but," she said, "You might better go get some, you know,
psychological counseling of some kind to make sure it's,
you know, it's okay."
And Abby said as a result of her response,
she got letters of strong response on both sides.
Some people wrote and said,
"Well, what in the world's the matter?
She's by herself.
She does her housework.
Nobody's there.
Blinds are pulled.
What's wrong with that?
It's crazy for you to even question that!
That's no big deal!"
Others wrote and said,
"Obviously, the woman is psychotic."
(Audience laughs).
"She's out of her mind; she needs to get immediate help,
somebody who would do their housework
without any clothes on."
And then Abby tells the group there in my school...
She said, "Then I got an avalanche of letters,
but said one letter stands out.
This woman wrote and says, "Dear Abby, in response to the
woman who did her housework in the nude,
let me tell you what happened to me."
She said, "A few weeks back, I, I got up, took a shower, put on
an old robe," and said, "I started-it was wash day."
She said, "I went and got the dirty clothes from my kid's
room, and all of our dirty clothes and hampers."
Said, "I took 'em down in the basement."
Said, "I do all my washing down there," and she said,
"While I was down there, I was drying something,
and there was steam in the air,"
and she said, "My hair-I just got it fixed.
It was straightening and falling," and she said,
"I wanted to do something to cover my head," and she said,
"I reached over there and got my son's football helmet
and put it on."
(Audience laughs).
You know, you ladies underst...
just cover it, and it was uh...
and she said, "There I was," and she said, "All of a sudden, I
put something in the washer, and I saw how dirty my robe was."
She said, "You nobody around, I didn't have any clothes on."
Said, "I just took my robe off and put it in the washer."
She said, "I was standing there in my football helmet without
any clothes on, in the basement (audience laughing)
nobody there."
And she said, "All of a sudden, I heard a noise..."
and she said, "I looked over the other side of the basement,
and in walks the man to read the gas meter!"
(Audience laughing).
And she said, "I screamed"!
and said,"He hollered, and he said, 'I'm sorry!
I'm sorry!' and he starts going out the door," but says,
"As he went out the door, he said,
'Lady, I sure hope your team wins!'"
(Audience Laughing).
Let me tell you something:
If we put on the full armor of the Lord Jesus Christ
and take off you and take off me, let me tell you something:
that helmet and all the rest of it will be on
the winning team for God in the 21st Century!
(Audience applauds).
Whether we realize it or not, you and I live in a war zone.
We may not see it, but we fight it everyday.
It's a all out spiritual battle for our heart and soul
against Satan and his evil forces.
Listen, the devil bombards our thoughts, our desires,
our emotions in ways we may never imagined.
And many times we are deceived into believing his lies.
So how are we going to hold off Satan's attack?
How are we going to win this battle?

Before my freshman year at the University of Alabama, I worked
in a tunnel - in those days I thought I would be an engineer.
We were boring through an Alabama mountain where a big
water conduit was to be placed.
One contractor bored from the east and the other came in from
the west; and they had to meet.
And we knew they were getting close and we were running the
lines and the grade to make sure they'd meet
but we weren't sure, sure, sure.
I remember one morning asking, "Have they broken through yet?"
and then they answered, "Yes.
They broke through last night on the graveyard shift.",

Years later it hit me: Jesus worked the "graveyard shift"

The Department of Justice's Response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma - Duration: 2:47.
Hello.
This is Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
On behalf of President Trump and the entire Department of Justice, I want to offer my
prayers and support to those devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.
Having personally lived through hurricanes and their aftermath on the Alabama Gulf Coast,
I can understand the challenges you face.
The Justice Department is the lead coordinating agency for federal law enforcement supporting
FEMA relief operations in hurricane-impacted areas.
More than 600 Department of Justice law enforcement officers from throughout the country are already
involved in relief efforts, helping local first responders provide medical assistance,
aiding in urban search and rescue operations throughout Florida and the Caribbean, assistance
with law enforcement duties and offering support however else they can.
Sadly, I must warn that experience tells us that while thousands come forward to help
selflessly, there are a few who use the disaster to enrich themselves or promise expertise
but lack competence to do professional work.
Be careful.
And be sure any contributions you make are only going to reputable aid organizations
that have proven to be honest and effective.
In the wake of these disasters, the Justice Department is here with ways to avoid becoming
a victim of fraud.
Since 2005, the Justice Department's National Center for Disaster Fraud has processed over
70,000 complaints.
It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to take disaster fraud complaints.
We've already received hundreds of complaints in the last month related to Harvey and Irma
and they come from all over the country.
We have also worked with the Federal Trade Commission to release antitrust guidance for
businesses that want to rebuild their communities.
This guidance will ensure that these businesses can work together to rebuild affected communities
without violating the antitrust laws.
Finally, I encourage anyone with information about fraud or other illegal behavior to call
the Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721.
With your help, we can make sure that the people hurt most by these tragedies are saved
from hurting any more.

RecyclingWorks MA Case Study | Food Recovery Across the Hierarchy | UMass Amherst - Duration: 6:51.
Waste matters, because in Massachusetts,
it's projected that our landfills are going to be full
within nine years' time.
Luckily, Massachusetts put out a food waste ban for
institutions to try to limit that amount of food waste
that is going to our landfills.
UMass leads the industry, or at least is tops
in the industry as far as our sustainability is concerned.
We have a huge reputation to uphold.
We have to be excellent from the top down
in everything that we do.
In general in our operations, I like to follow
the EPA's food waste pyramid.
At the very top, the first priority of that food pyramid is
waste reduction strategies.
How do we prevent creating this excess waste at all?
LeanPath is all over the country, and we've been
using it here for, over five years now.
We just updated our system, so it's taking pictures
of the food, so this is really adding to our story.
We can see what's being wasted.
We can see what's being composted visually,
but also see in pounds.
For instance, what does a whole bin of romaine cores
look like? Can we be using those cores?
In the past three years, we've reduced our waste
to the financial amount of around $750,000.
The culinary staff works very closely with
watching how vegetables, and even proteins,
are trimmed.
We don't want to be wasting any of that.
So, looking at if something even needs to be peeled and trimmed.
Sometimes the skin is very nutrient-rich and we want to use that.
So now vegetables are peeled or trimmed differently
than years ago.
We're done reducing food cost by 10%, 5%, anything
in that neighborhood.
That money is free money now.
That's 5-10% of your budget that you can
that you can throw right back into the local economy
without adding a penny to your overall costing.
When any of the prep is being done, the trim is sitting
right there in front of either the person doing it,
or it's visible to the customer.
They see what we're doing here every day.
So, that definitely starts our minds spinning, seeing
the heaping mounds of food that potentially are
now going into the compost. So, is it edible?
Will it make something taste good?
Can it enhance the flavor?
Can we make a stock from it, or a soup base, where
then we wouldn't have to order that?
We could be doing that in-house.
So those are all things that we definitely look at,
prior to putting it in the compost bin.
Having more stations that provide "just in time" cooking
so there wasn't more overproduction
or food that was wasted because
it wasn't being consumed.
Cooking "just in time" are also stations that
didn't actually cook the food, like our stir-fry station,
until the customer requested it to be cooked.
So that cut down drastically on any overproduction
or food waste that would have been composted.
We have a philosophy here of what we call
small plate, big flavor.
Basically what that means is, we're serving you
correct portion sizes.
As you look around our dining commons,
you're not going to see a tray as well.
We're a trayless environment.
What the effect of that was
is about a 30% reduction in food waste.
We take the further initiative of educating our customers.
So, serving less, which is our part,
serving smaller portions every day,
and then educating the students
on reducing their waste on the plate, so only taking
what they will consume at each sitting.
The second part of that EPA pyramid, the second priority,
under reducing the amount of waste that we're creating,
is feeding people.
The reality of it is, when you look at students in colleges
and you start to say "one in six is food-insecure, yet an average American is throwing away 40% of their food,"
the numbers don't add up.
It is really great, edible food, we don't want to see
end up in the compost stream, so we donate that food
to Craig's Doors, in Amherst.
We're doing this through the Food Recovery Network
which is a national program.
Beneath feeding people, there is composting
down at the bottom, and composting is sort of just a step up
from the landfill, but there are all these other steps
that we want to consider, before even composting,
because composting is great, but it's not enough.
We've had a composting program for over 10 years
here at UMass, and in general, we're doing
about 1,200 tons of food waste, compostable waste,
a year and that's a lot.
When you start to envision it,
that's 25 city buses, filled to the top, end to end
of food waste.
We were very much moving forward with
not increasing more waste
even though we were increasing our customer base.
It's really my job to help on the education piece
of the student body. So I do that as much as possible
through passive signage,
because students don't necessarily go to
the dining commons to learn.
It's where they take a break from learning, and where
they have this family feel,
and where they ground themselves and
nourish themselves and give themselves energy
to go back out and learn.
But that doesn't mean that there isn't
a great opportunity for passive education
through really amazing and interesting signage
and displays.
So you'll see that in all of our operations, through
posters, through screens, through even beautiful
simple things like vegetable displays or flower displays
that can be educational and engage people
in the process.
Anything that can boost your staff's morale and
train them at the same time is really powerful.
So it's not just "do this because we're telling you to do this"
but "do this because it's the right thing, do this because you're helping us in this larger sense."
And that feeling boosts morale.
Sustainability is a great story for that;
it's something to be a part of, truly,
and we're trying to weave it into the value system here.

5 Decades / 5 Stories - Chapter 3: The Innovation - Duration: 11:06.
The first time I remember that I was snowmobiling was in 1969,
riding around the house at my home.
My mother has been telling me afterwards that I went inside
and got a helmet
and then I started going really fast around the house so she had to stop me.
Since my father was a Lynx dealer,
it was quite obvious that I was riding a Lynx of course.
But, the obvious thing to do when you living here, like we do here,
is to go snowmobiling and race with snowmobiles.
I started to racing in 1980 with the smaller 340cc sleds.
I did that for a couple of years
We were aware that Lynx had built a snowcross sled for Finland.
Aimo Larvia told me that the sled was coming to Sweden for racing and for the 1994 season.
I'd been doing quite well on the race tracks, so I got an offer from Aimo to ride the sled.
I remember the first race with Lynx.
I haven't had time to ride the sled a lot because it came quite late.
I was back in 12th or 13th place or something like that.
And I thought, shit, this is not good.
I went home, practiced hard and learned the sled.
And the next race was in Östersund, the biggest race in Sweden for all season.
nd then we were fully prepared. Lynx dominated that race.
So of course in 1985, I think we won every race for Lynx riders that year.
I was a bit hesitant, because I didn't know what to expect,
what kind of competition there would be.
I got into the flow quite easily and when we came for the Swedish National Championships
we have things sorted out and
my first year in the open class I won the championship.
The thing that Aimo Larvia was, is that he was very brave
and very intelligent in selecting his riders
because he didn't pick up the established riders.
But then the riders were also young and charging
and guys with a completely new style of riding.
The GLS was the complete package
with very good front suspension, very good rear suspension,
very good engines, perfect balance in sled.
The other competitors maybe had one or two of the components,
but Lynx was complete.
The sled was bigger and it was heavier.
You can think that that would be a disadvantage but it wasn't,
because it allowed you to go much faster through the bumps
and you didn't slow down.
You just pulled full throttle.
The GLS model made the brand awareness that was missing.
But I think the 5900 was selling
in huge amounts for many, many years.
And I mean, it's still around.
I had to step in big shoes right away in the beginning.
I became responsible for the GLX 5900 product itself.
It was a real crossover in its class,
combining the deep snow capacity of the longer wide track,
together with the comfort of the sliderail suspension.
A combination never seen before.
Since that, every single manufacturer has copied our GLX
so they have a similar construction.
There were professionals who were riding.
There were families. There were fishermen.
It was filling the needs of every customer group.
In 2 years it took the whole market.
It became a big success.
The same year 1985, we came with the first Lynx sport vehicle.
Iconic GLS 3300,
so it was a big year, a big launch.
Lynx was well known about utility vehicle
and things like that, so that not too sexy things.
Now we got a new consumer base,
who are looking for more sportier machines.
We built a strong foundation for the Lynx and for the company
so that we came with complete new products.
When we got a new CEO, Pekka Ojanen
who take the lead also the marketing
and let say that we really start to develop. We made the first films,
« First Syncro » and « Unbeatable », very famous film until today.
There was a small company in Tulppio providing cabin accommodation services.
But it was closed during wintertime, due to the lack of guests.
So we decided to organise a snowmobile safari to the Korvatunturi Fell.
We planned for reindeer herders to guide the tourists,
when the tourists start to arrive.
We were certain tourists would come.
We split the crew to two groups and rode close enough to Korvatunturi Fell
that they were able to take photographs of the fell.
There was a lot of media coverage about our trip
and it interested many throughout the country.
I got a phone call from the Finnish Tourist Board in Helsinki
asking if I could present our idea to them.
I had to tell them how to organise safaris on snowmobiles to the Korvatunturi Fell.
We decided to organise the "Tulppio Safari" with a bigger volume in 1987.
This was the first collaborative safari organised in Lapland.
There were about 100 riders,
but we were accompanied by followers, meaning there were almost 300 people participating in the event.
Snowmobiling gets people active when an event is well organised.
It was a huge crowd of spectators we were leading.
This group also brought in a lot of money,
and it was cash and tourism that were the main reasons behind the idea.
Because we became more and more a recreational producer,
it didn't fit very well to Valmet corporation
who was well known about a heavy machinery.
So they were willing to sell the division.
Bombardier probably saw a good opportunity to buy that,
because they became the owner together with Starckjohann-Telko
who was the importer of Ski-Doo products to Finland.
And I believe that they had some thoughts so that
probably these products could be sold also in North America.
I'm not sure, but I believe so.
So we get an access to the many components with the lower prices.
And also we had to remember that we were using Rotax engines.
Rotax was owned by Bombardier that time,
so that now we were not anymore competitors.
So we belonged to the same family.

Doomfist: A year and a half later I noticed a difference... the sink in the chicken was leaking... what a mess... I have pushed the human limits like no one ever has. That's how I became so strong.

Winston: You become the new Doomfist and started killing everyone until Genji, Tracer and myself imprisoned you. Reaper broke you free bla bla bla and here we are now.

How Just Six Words Can Spark Conversation About Race in America - Duration: 2:13.
Race has always been important in America.
It's always been with us.
We went through a period with the election of Barack Obama
where some felt that we were entering a post-racial space.
We clearly are not post-racial.
We are at a point where we have a lot of issues
around race and identity that we have to deal with.
For all of these systems we have that allow us to allegedly communicate,
we are more divided in terms of how we actually interact.
There are fewer tethers to allow us to peek
into someone else's life
and understand their point of view.
Race is something that's not easy for people to talk about.
I was looking for a way to provide a portal.
I came up with a construct that I thought would work,
where we essentially examine and interrogate
America's racial and cultural DNA
and we do it starting with six-word stories.
"White, not allowed to be proud."
"I'm only Asian when it's convenient."
"Lady, I don't want your purse."
"Why do I do that when I see a black man?"
We've done this now for almost seven years
and we've officially archived 50,000 stories.
I like to think of the project as capturing America's cultural and racial DNA.
You know, if you're looking at tree rings or if you're looking at the genome,
there are certain points where interesting things happen.
Interesting markers.
We're certainly living through one of those moments right now
in part because of political leadership,
in part because of the way communicate,
and in part because of the swift demographic changes that are happening,
and in part because of technology.
I know what the value of this project is right now,
but I can only imagine how valuable this will be
to journalists or researchers or historians or social scientists years from now
as they look back on the age of Obama and the age of Donald Trump,
the moment when we sort of took a turn,
moving toward a majority-minority America.
