Hey placebos, Julian here for a DNews Short!

The placebo effect was first described in 1572, by a French philosopher named Michel

de Montaigne.

He wrote "there are men on whom the mere sight of medicine is operative."

Which makes sense, because pharmacists at the time were essentially relying on the human

body's natural healing anyway.

I.E. they just relied on the placebo effect!

For some researchers it's an "annoying complication," for some patients, it's

magical -- but the placebo effect is important, in that it does make people feel better!

Studies on the effect landed in the 20th century, finding (more or less), that for the placebo

effect to work, people simply had to believe in the treatment they received.

There have been gigabytes of videos and articles written about the placebo effect, but how

much does it really alter scientific experiments?

According to one 2014 study, in Science Translational Medicine, 50 percent of the effects of a drug

could be just because the patient was told they were given medicine they believed in.

But that doesn't mean medicine is giving you sugar pills half the time, or that placebos

are screwing with medical science.

In fact, placebos produce real, measurable, results; like reducing symptoms of, to quote

Harvard Magazine, "pain, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and… [some symptoms of] Parkinson's."

Another study in 2016 found the mid-frontal gyrus lit up in an fMRI scan in those who

responded to placebo treatments!

This means scientists should be able to design experiments that ensure the placebo effect

isn't an "annoying complication" anymore.

And that's the future.

A 2011 study looked at the brains of people taking placebos and found there are many placebo

effects with different mechanisms and results.

It counter-argued, placebos are not just sugar pills and annoyances to clinical science.

Placebos are made of [quote] "words and rituals, symbols, and meanings!"

We can't discount the positive social interaction that comes with doctors, healing, and medicine!

Instead, scientists are trying to understand how the placebo effect works, so they can

control for it in studies, and take advantage of it's power to heal.

Martin Luther King Day - The FBI's Surprising Reversal - @midnight with Chris Hardwick - Duration: 2:00.

Trump's Pick To Head CIA Thinks Climate Change Not Important To Security - Duration: 5:03.

Representative Mike Pompeo is Donald Trump's pick to head up the CIA.

During recent questioning for his confirmation hearings, Pompeo continuously refused to address

any question given to him related to climate change.

Now, the reason he was even being asked about climate change is because for several years

The Pentagon and the CIA have said that climate change is a massive national security threat

to the United States.

They have been saying that since the George W. Bush administration.

A lot of people don't even realize that, at the end of his administration, George W. Bush

actually did accept the science that climate change was real.

CIA said the same thing during the Obama years, but now we get Mike Pompeo coming in to tell

us, "I'm not going to answer questions about climate change because I am going to be 'unique

and different.'"

That is how he described how his role at the CIA is going to change compared to his predecessors.

He says that he's going to focus on the warriors, that is the word he used, keeping America

safe.

Mike Pompeo basically told us, if we distill his words, that climate change doesn't matter.

It's not the job of the CIA to keep America safe from any of that if it's even real.

What is the job of the CIA is to get behind these American troops and give them the push

they need as they go off and die in a war for god knows what.

That's what Mike Pompeo is telling us in these confirmation hearings.

Now, it's bad enough to sit there and say that climate change, addressing climate change,

acknowledging climate change, researching climate change is not the job of the CIA because

it damn sure is.

Climate change is the greatest national security threat to the United States that comes from

the CIA, that comes from The Pentagon telling us this.

They know the dangers that are caused from rising sea levels, not just in the United

States, but around the globe.

What are we going to do when we suddenly have 10 to 20 to 30 to 100 million displaced climate

refuges trying to get through our borders or trying to get through Europe's borders,

trying to get somewhere where they can continue to live because their homes are under water?

We are not prepared for that kind of situation.

The CIA is supposed to address things like that.

Now, the second part of what Pompeo has to say, that he wants to stand with American

warriors.

Warriors?

This isn't fucking old time Rome.

These are soldiers.

These are people's children, somebody's mother, somebody's father.

They're soldiers meant to protect the United States, not to go out and fight wars of aggression

that Mike Pompeo dreams up or that Donald Trump dreams up because somebody insulted

him on Twitter.

That is not what these people are.

These are human beings.

Mike Pompeo is already ready to send them to die for no reason.

Pompeo has escaped a lot of media scrutiny and that's a shame because this is a guy with

a very checkered past, a very short history in the United States House of Representatives.

In the four years that he's served though, the Koch brothers have been his biggest campaign

funder, almost doubling his second next funder, which is actually the health insurance industry.

That's the kind of guy Pompeo is.

He wants our kids, our parents, our cousins, our brothers and sisters to go out and fight

these wars and die because they're warriors but forget about climate change because that's

not really the job of the CIA.

He's saying that because of all of this money that he's getting from the fossil fuel industry

from the Koch brothers.

This is even more terrifying than just a regular cabinet position because, as head of the CIA,

he does have a direct line into the president's ear about matters of national security, about

matters of international security.

Pompeo is a guy essentially with his hand on the trigger.

If his hand is not on it, he sure as hell is in Donald Trump's ear telling him when

it's time to pull that trigger.

At that point in time I believe the west side of the intersectin was blocked,

which wasn't clearly apparent wt walked into the intersection,

because of all the people just standing around.

We switched directions to walk h

and we saw the police officers, coming down in droves,

like lines of them.

[LOUD YELLING] "Move!"

[MAN IN CROWD] "There's nowhere, there's no exit."

[TERRA] I didn't have any reason to expect

when we approached the intersec,

that there was going to be any n

we weren't going to be able to leave the intersection.

From the instant that I saw those cops coming down in riot r

and pounding those shields, lik, everything changed.

We couldn't move because we were kettled in.

boring, sporadically organized, group of people standing around,

to this really violent,

closing in around all of us, with shields and screaming

and all of this force.

It just went from zero to one hundred instantly.

people were asking all of these,

no response, nothing...

My brother was arrested, I got my brother arrested.

He was volunteering,

along with numerous friends, I went to law school with.

So yes I had to phone my own mor

and tell her as the emergency ct

that my brother had been arrestd

and he was actually told he was being charged.

[ERIN] At some point, police sad something like

you're all going to get arreste, so you might as well just go.

[OFFICER YELLS] You're all going to be arrested

line up here and be arrested ni.

We don't want to go in and hurt.

That was the only time anybody spoke to us.

[SHERVIN] They were saying they weren't going to use the dispersing alarm,

but they were going to use it as a means to communicate

to a large amount of people.

And at that moment I was like "Where is that thing?

We bought this and it wasn't th"

[SHERVIN] It was note communicas that we should leave

otherwise we would be arrested.. ...or else.

[ABBY] When you start to get ino the area where you're detaining

hundreds and hundreds of people who are there on a public street

for a huge variety of purposes..

...some are protesting, some are walking

some are monitoring, some are journalists

it's going to be extremely difficult to argue

you have individual grounds to detain all of those people.

of those rights and of those freedoms and

that is a huge deal.

Wow there is a big blue squishy ball inside!

The ball is blue Now and when we squeeze it….It looks like it changes color!

That's so cool!

Hmm, I wonder what could be inside to make the ball change color?

The only way to find out is to cut it open.

Let's get our scissors and find out what's inside.

Did you see that?

The ball was filled with fluffy white cream...and it's all over Owlette's face.

This looks so sticky!

Poor Owlette….let's clean this white cream off her face.

There she is.

This feels so fluffy...like a big cloud in the sky.

And There is so much of it!

But it's also very messy!

Gross! my hands are all icky now!

Sorry about getting cream all over your face Owlette, but good thing you are in the bathtub.

Owlette has one other toy in her tub.

It's a squishy light bulb toy.

This light bulb doesn't light up like a normal lightbulb, but It's super squishy,

and extra stretchy too.

What makes this toy so squishy and stretchy?

We have to be very careful when we use scissors, so ask your mom and dad.

Wow, this toy is filled with water!

Let's give Owlette a bath.

We're cleaning Owlette's face!

And now the toy is finally empty...it's not squishy, but it's still super stretchy.

Now it's time for Catboy's bath.

Look at this orange toy.

It looks really lumpy...and hard!

But it's not very squishy...or stretchy, but it's fun to squeeze.

I wonder what's inside this ball.

OK Catboy, let's find out.

Catboy's orange toy is filled with gumballs!

I love gumballs...look how colorful they are.

And there are so many gumballs.

We just gave Catboy a gumball bath!

Catboy is so lucky!

And there is one more toy in his bathtub.

This is a blue squeezy ball...and look what happens when you squeeze it.

Awesome!

It turns into a bunch of little purple balls.

The little purple balls look like grapes when you squeeze it.

What color is inside this ball that makes it turn purple?

Gross!

It's gooey slime!

Catboy's ball was filled with purple slime...that's why it changed to the color purple when we

squeezed it.

And there is a lot of slime in it….there, it's finally empty.

The slime is mixing with the colorful gumballs….this feels really icky.

I think one of the PJ Masks night time villains put slime in this toy...who is your favorite

And Gekko got slimed!

It's Marshall from Paw Patrol!

OK Paw Patrol fans, what kind of pup is Marshall?

Is he a police pup or a fire pup?

That's right, Marshall is the fire pup.

Marshall has white hair with black spots, but it looks like the blue slime turned Marshall

blue.

That's ok...marshall loves jumping around in the slime in gekko's tub.

It's a pink toy.

And he is extra squishy.

Look at the huge pink bubbles when you squish him.

This looks like a pink bunny rabbit with 2 floppy bunny ears.

His bunny ears are really stretchy too.

It's bath time!

There is so much water in this toy that we can give both Gekko and Owlette a bath.

Thanks bunny rabbit….you aren't squishy anymore, but you sure are stetchy still.

And look...Gekko has one more bonus toy hidden in his tub.

This toy looks like a monster….and he is green just like Gekko.

I wonder if this toy has super gekko muscles like gekko too.

Fire Emblem Pitfalls - Part 2.5 (AGDQ) - Duration: 8:42.

hey guys this is mekkah. welcome to

2.5 of Fire Emblem Pitfalls, where I'm going

to be clearing up some misconceptions

that might have made their way to some

people's minds due to AGDQ. this is just a

quick video I'm making, letting me experiment

with a different recording setup. it's

not quite what you're used to. it's kind

of scripted but not really. quick disclaimer

kirbymastah did a great job of making this

run both fast and entertaining. and his couch did a good job of filling air time with

explanations to make it all more accessible.

so if you haven't watched it yet

link is in the description but i'm sure

most people have seen it by now. but fire emblem

is very menu heavy, very numbers

heavy so it can't have

been easy to make it this fun to watch and

I know commentary very hard to do

especially live. if i only used first

takes for any commentary I've done then

they would sound even worse than they

already do. but some of the things that

were said were arguably wrong and some are

actually just plain wrong

no hate intended towards the runner or the couch if

i was there and i disagreed i wouldn't

even have said anything since you don't

want to make your friends look silly on stream.

i think they are errors worth correcting

so since this is fire emblem pitfalls, i might as well

do it and there were three things in

there that stood out to me is factually

wrong and then two more opinion

based but I think they're poor advice.

so let's get the small ones out of the

way first so first bit is about

fog of war and he's explaining what

fog of war does. so, enjoy.

sure. fog of war is really really

really annoying. basically fog of war

is a big part of the map that you just

can't see because you know it's foggy

and it obstructs your vision. there are

certain units that have an advantage here

thieves for instance such as matthew have a

really big vision range so there goes

that sort of unlocking the map if you go

on top of a mountain you also are able

to see pretty far away

that's a really clever idea

standing on top of a mountain to get more vision

but it's not true

i wish it was true. it was

actually a good idea but unfortunately

it's not. so i was going to disprove this by

putting a unit on top of a mountain

but it turns out that there is no fog of war map in fire emblem seven that have these

mountains like this one which is really strange

but I did the next best thing and I put

Hawkeye on this map and he can see three

tiles on his right right and he's standing on a plain so

i'll move him on top of a peak and there we

go, he still has three tiles of vision. so...

peaks are like bigger mountains and hawkeye is like

a bigger human so if this doesn't

increase your vision then nothing does.

next one is about

thief movement in the sand. that should be

around here somewhere

so he's explaining what desert terrain does

...flying units. it heavily impedes their

movements. well, there are two

exceptions. thieves who are you know sneaky

nimble and sneaky and everything and are

able to walk around okay in the sand and

magic users who are all mystical and what not

so the sand kind of moves for them.

ok so what he said here is partially

true, thieves are sneaky, nimble and everything

and they can move a little further

in the sand but I think he's kind of

mistaken on why that is so as you can see

thieves like Matthew here have three movement in the sand. whereas these people they

all have two. doesn't really matter which one you

pick but the thing is this is not

because they are less impeded by the sand.

if you check the terrain data on serenes forest

you can see that thieves

they are in the same class as like Lords and

Swordmaster and a lot of other foot

units

i think when it comes to desert terrain

this is where all the people like Archer

and mercenary are at even though they are not listed. but if you

scroll down you can see the foot column

is right here and if you scroll down to

desert you can see it cost them two

movements to cross a desert tile. now the

reason that Matthew can really move a little further than

our other units it's because thieves have

six movement whereas these others they

all have five so they can pay the cost twice

to get across a desert tile whereas matthew

can pay it three times. i think the guy was

confused with some of the later games like in

path of radiance thieves have full movement

in the sand. and in radiant dawn they incur

a penalty but not as much as other foot

units. so bit of a mix up there. next one is

about weapon triangle and it happens all

the way the final chapter

this will do

...anima contains the three

elements and they have their own

triangle within the triangle. (..) okay so i think he has

been playing a bit of a fe4, fe5 lately because

I mean anima, the tomes they are based on

these elements like fire thunder and wind

like in the old games you did

have the triangle but in fe7 they obviously

don't,, they all belong to anima so...so much

for the easy fixes a lot more

opinionated stuff. this is things i'm a

bit more passionate about. i try to

nip these in the bud whenever I can and thisfirst

part is about prepromotes. really want to

find the right timestamp, here we go

so he's explaining prepromotes to the audience.

(...) class however some units are

prepromoted that means you get them and

they're already promoted now the benefit

of this is that they come in stronger than

the [unpromoted] units, the downside is that

they can kind of hog up experience and

typically they have really bad growths

they're kind of a beginner trap because

you use them too much you get kinda screwed

later on. but if you know how to use them

properly they can really just break the game for you

pretty much (...). i'm very glad that they

kind of corrected him on the prepromote things like marcus because the

fire emblem veterans of the community

they have been trying so hard to get

people to actually utilize their

prepromotes. I'm not going to spend too much

time on this like explaining it in detail

because i already did so in pitfalls

part 1 but the hogging experience

mentality is so wrong and so persistent

in the community. it is kind of true that

if you're a new player and you feed

every single kill to marcus and

then everyone else falls behind or dies

then you might have some trouble to

finish the game but like even in this

game there are so many good prepromotes that that's not even true. but it makes

the game a bit harder i guess but people

take it to such an extreme that they're like: "well,

i shouldn't use prepromotes because they make

my other units fall behind", whereas really it's the player

who is in control. you just don't make your

prepromote don't do everything but feel free

to use them like a normal unit or a

little more because they are so broken and

so powerful so just don't over use them

but they're not worse just because

they're better. last one is about kent

and sain, around here somewhere

(...) I mean when you play fire emblem you kind of

have to pick and choose which units you

really want to level up. usually

people pick one of the cavaliers either

sain or kent. you could technically use both

but what's the point in that?

which one did you get(...)

what's the point in that? well kent

sain and lowen

the cavaliers are not like bulbasaur

charmander and squirtle you can actually

pick multiple, and you should. there's no NPC

guarding a gate somewhere saying "hey man

you've got three cavaliers come back

when you've ditched two." if you're already

using kent then sain is still an

excellent unit. much better than most

other units in the game, especially foot

units like wil dorcas guy and so on.

i would much rather use Kent and Sain

then Kent and Wil. the only real

argument against using both is the Knight Crest

you get one in chapter 17 in hector

mode and then the next one is kind of

late in chapter 22 but a cavalier that

promotes in chapter 22 is still much

better than an archer who promotes earlier

there's also the option of promoting one

of your cavaliers in lyn hard mode using

Wallace's Knight Crest and there's also an

earth in chapter 25 that you can use

or chapter 26 but either way it's nothing to worry

about

now these five things are actually all

the nitpicking that I've got for the AGDQ

commentary, everything else was pretty

good. just wanted to correct these few things

but other than that they did a great job so
