Hi, everyone! Thanks for listening again
and thanks so much for taking this
journey with me through all 12 episodes
of Yuri on Ice season one. And I'm being
deliberate about calling it "season one",
because I'm desperately hoping /
convinced there will be at least a
second season after watching episode 12.
Anyway, thanks so much for all your
wonderful comments, suggestions...one of
the best things about this fandom is
that it's like, just watching the show
with a community of people who are so
passionate about it. And to say that
this series really has a knack for
creating a devoted fan following would
be a huge understatement. And I don't
know about you guys, but this whole week
I've just been looking
forward to this episode, and now that
it's played, I almost feel like, "well,
what am I going to do with my life after
this?"
Although, you know, I have some thoughts
about how we could spend that time. (fandom ^_^) So,
anyway, episode 12...
Wow, once again, they delivered beyond my
expectations and managed to surprise us
and also not surprise us at the same
time. I guess in the end they decided to
go with Yuri and Victor continuing to be
student-coach, but somehow there are also
competitors at the same time, thereby
surpassing our expectations.
Way to go, MAPPA. ^_^ So I feel like, if episode
12 had an overarching message, it would
be that this is NOT the end, but only a
new beginning. I feel like this
episode really sets the stage for really
a new period of all of the characters'
lives. Yuri, during his free program,
said "Victor thanks so much for
bringing me here" and then from here on
out, he's -- on some levels ---
has surpassed Victor. On other levels,
become his equal. And now with
four quads in his program (the same
number of quads that Victor had in his
free program from the last season) he can
truly
compete against Victor as an equal.
To top it off, the quad flip at the
end, I felt like was both an
acknowledgement of Victor's contribution
to his skating, as well as kind of like a
love declaration to Victor. And then
Victor, so interestingly I feel like,
Victor expressed his mixed feelings as
well about kind of where they're
going in the big picture. So, you know, he
said that he felt that having both Yurio
and Yuri surpass his world
records kind of meant a big deal, kind
of being the ultimate achievement for
him as a coach. But it was also kind of a
little bit of a diss as a skater. Which I
can see. I think he does have the desire
to come back to the ice. Part of it
for himself, because he's
psyched about skating again. But also
part of it because of Yuri and wanting
to be that -- continue to be that target
for Yuri and (be) something for Yuri to
be excited about, to chase after.
I think the fact of the matter is that
he is excited to face Yuri both as a
coach and a fellow competitor, as an
equal. I feel like that interview in
in episode 8 (?), I believe, alluded to it when
some reporter asked Victor a question about
whether he -- if Yuri was so
inspiring, why wouldn't he want to skate
against him as a competitor? And I think
Victor didn't answer because it was true.
That's my interpretation of it. I think
there are probably many interpretations
that are possible. And then Yuri's
actions
in this episode, we're also -- you can
really see that he went through a
transformation. So it's a little
contradictory; in the beginning of the
episode, when he announced his retirement
and he sounded pretty sure about it
because he didn't want to hold
Victor back, and he didn't want to keep
Victor from the rest of the world. But
then in his free program, he said "I don't
want this to end,
I want to be with Victor in figure
skating forever." And I think that
based on Victor's reaction to Yuri's
announcement, I think
that the feeling was very much mutual. I
think Victor himself had mixed feelings
about being a fellow competitor and
skater. From a
competitors' standpoint, he probably
feels left out because the skating world
is kind of moving on without him. There's
all these talented skaters. He wants to
get back into it, to continue
setting records and be a moving
target for Yuri and Yurio. And yet he
still wants his hands in the cookie jar
of being Yuri's coach, of being constantly
by Yuri's side. Which I don't blame him for. ^_^
I think the idea of them being
competitors may be a complicated concept
to grasp, but maybe it doesn't need
to be. I used to do competitive
taekwondo, and I think that anyone
who has done a competitive sport and
been a part of a team that they really
enjoyed being a part of can tell you
that when some of
your best friends are in the same sport,
and your friend does something cool, you just
get really excited about it, you admire
them, and want to do the same, and
potentially push it to the next level.
And your relationship grows and
thrives on it, and that's how you also
push the sport to the next level. I
do think that next season -- if there is a
next season -- will be a tough season for
Victor, because he's going to have to
balance between being a coach, and being
a competitor, and still being you know
Victor the legend. And I think that...I
guess the one thing he has, that I'm hopeful
for, is that he's Victor, he's a
living legend...he probably will do
something again to surprise everyone.
And he probably will manage to stay
ahead or at least be one of the top (skaters)
for the remaining couple of seasons that
he's going to be in skating, before he
retires for good.
I also really liked the part at the end
of the episode when they showed
basically the three of them -- Yuri,
Victor, and Yurio training at Hasetsu
castle, rather than in Russia. Whether
they train at Hasetsu full-time, or spend
part of the time in Russia, I just think
that Japan kinda has a special
significance for three of them.
It's awesome that they continue to spend
time together there. Um, potential themes
for season two could be... Yuri
winning World's and continue to come to
his own as basically one of the best
skaters in the world. Or maybe even more
of a focus on their relationship. There's
enough potential there.
You know, the fact that Yuri only
won silver kind of just opens all kinds
of question marks and boxes. I also do like the fact
that this season could be kind of a
standalone story, if it had to be. And I
could see reasons to not continue the
story as well, although that would leave
us fans wanting more.
Or maybe an OVA would be a good
compromise, because it would address some
of the holes that we want to see more of,
without compromising the significance of
the original story and timeline. And I
also wanted to say I really loved Yurio's
contribution to Yuri's final
decision about not retiring. I was
anticipating or hoping something in the
last episode would change Yuri's mind
about retirement, but I never anticipated
it would be Yurio who would play the key
role here.
Now I found myself switching from really
hoping that Yuri wins the gold to
really hoping Yurio would win the gold.
I think Victor really placed
his hopes in Yurio to motivate Yuri to stay
in skating, to light a
fire under Yuri and to show him that
there's still a lot to be achieved, if he
stays in skating. The hug that Victor
gave Yurio was as much of an
acknowledgement of Yurio and Victor's
relationship as it was a request -- like a
desperate hope -- to get Yurio to convince
Yuri to stay in skating through (Yurio's) free
program. Overall, another theme in
this anime is just how the different
skaters elevate each other's levels and
continue to push each other grow, which
is the spirit of a true sports
anime... and probably just true of sports
in general. Victuuri...how to interpret
their current relationship status?
Well to me, they still remain
engaged -- like "about to be
married" engaged. I think it's nice to
actually hold out the hope that they
will be married when Yuri finally wins
the gold within the next few seasons.
(I'm hoping maybe even in the next season.)
It's kind of nice that Yuri doesn't
win the gold right away this season, now
that I think about it, because it gives
them a period of time to get used to the
idea of being engaged. So
Victor said, "Oh once he wins the gold,
we're gonna get married ^.^"
I mean he was kind of half kidding but,
just in case he wasn't (really, he wasn't)..
I am putting serious hope in the fact that they will be
truly married -- like not symbolically -- but
for real. And, as in any real marriage,
they need a period of time of being an
engaged couple first (well for most people, not all). I read
somewhere that season one barely passed
the censorship rules of the channel that
it was airing on,
which may explain why they had to censor
the kiss in episode 7, with Victor's arm
kind of blocking their lips. I hope that
they will be able to find a way around
it in the next season, so we can get more
on-screen
public displays of affection, including
maybe an onscreen kiss where their lips
actually touch. Nothing overtly
steamy or tacky, just enough to get a
statement. Another way they could achieve
this is if they allow the characters
maybe to make some sort of innuendo, kind
of confirming Victor and Yuri's
private lives. I feel like they came
closest when, in episode 12 the
scene where Yuri and Victor were having
that conversation in their hotel room,
and it's basically like what like a
couples' fight. My heart dropped, as i'm
sure many fans', did when Yuri made
Victor cry. But it shows you how much they
have really wormed in their way into each
other's hearts. That they can be so
vulnerable to each other, as can happen
when you're in love with someone and
you're pretty much defenseless against
them. And Victor just being so human, and
getting mad, and I can't stand it. >_< Ahh. Go
Victuuri for tugging at our heartstrings
once again. So I think it's so obvious
now that they are practically a married
couple. Reminds me of back in the day -- and
maybe now I'm dating myself (o.0) -- when Haruka (Sailor Uranus)
and Michiru (Sailor Neptune), a canon lesbian couple from Sailor
Moon -- they were basically an on-screen
couple (but not overtly). Later on,
Ogata Megumi, the voice actress for
Haruka,
(whose voice I'm obsessed with by the way)
said that the director told her to
basically play the character as if they
were a married couple. Direct quote.
She always kept that in mind when
she played the character, and I mean this
show came out like early
'90s er I don't want to say for sure
I'm not sure exactly but it's really
early on, but I was really impressed with
that. Basically you can imagine
now, the voice actors for
Yuri and Victor probably got very
similar directions from the director.
Except that their scenes are even more
overt than Haruka and Michiru's were.
Which is a sign of the changing times.
So next season aside, this season they
already achieved what they initially
thought was impossible, which is to have
Yuri and Victor skate as a pair
in an exhibition.
Not only did they skate as a pair, they
skated to "Stay close to me" which is the
duet were the two male singers sing
about wanting to be with their lover. The
symbolism is incredible, because this is
the same song that they played at the
beginning. Just shows how long they've
been planning this, how intentional they
were about the fact that Victor and Yuri
were going to be a couple. And no one is
ever going to contest that Victuuri is
canon now (I hope ^_^), although I don't think
anyone has been since episode 3. And
So you can
probably bet I'll keep making analysis
videos when season 2 comes out.
Fingers crossed. Thanks so much for
those of you who have wandered over to
my channel and found my
songs section.
Please listen to my songs, I put a lot of time
and work into these songs, so it really warms
my heart when people listen. Also I'm just
really appreciative that you guys listen
to these rants *laughs* about Victuuri. As
far as the song collection goes, I know
it's a little eclectic. It
reflects the kind of singer I am, which is --
I like to try a lot of different styles
and voices. You may have noticed my
recent duet with Soranam -- the "World
Domination How To" song
when I tried a guy voice *laughs*. My usual
voice is more girly, but I'd like to
try to you know just kind of try
different things, and ballads
are kinda usually my favorite kinds of
songs to sing. Like "Tegami" or "Tsuki
no Shizuku" or "Uta ni Katachi"
which are over at my channel. Some
people say my speaking voice is kind of
different from my singing voice, which is
kind of interesting to me. Probably has
something to do with the resonance and
breath control when I'm singing that
produces a fuller sound. Anyway, I'm
also open for requests, although I
can't say I'm as talented as some of the other
really incredible singers in
the community. //
I've toyed with the idea of doing a
cover of a song from Yuri on Ice, but there
are already so many wonderful covers of
History Maker, I just didn't feel like I
had anything to add *laughs* to that in
particular. I've toyed with the idea of
covering Agape from
Yurio's free program since I've always
found it fun to kind of thing in a more
classical voice in the soprano range.
The one challenge with that
song being that I'm not really good with
Latin, and have no idea what the lyrics
are. *laughs* And you don't wanna hear me making up
Latin, trust me. But if anyone knows
the lyrics and would want to post them
somewhere, that would be awesome. ^_^
Anyway, just to throw that out there.
I've also been an avid consumer of
all the wonderful fanart, fanfics, AMVs,
skating covers that Yuri on Ice fandom has
produced. You're all so incredibly talented
and you really keep me at the edge of my
seat waiting for each new release, and
this is definitely going to get me -- tie
me over until season two. For
the serious skaters out there, man,
you're so incredible, I'm so jealous. I
took figure skating when I was little,
but I forgot pretty much everything and
I was went skating the other day and spent
two hours trying to get like the single
toe loop back,
and maybe kind of made it but
definitely fell a lot. So you're all so
amazing. I'm so impressed,
please make more material for us fans to
enjoy. So until season 2 comes out ,I'm
really looking forward to continuing to
engage in the fandom. Pease keep --
let's all entertain
each other. So if you really liked
this video, please subscribe..and until
next time! Bye!
