Youtube daily report Dec 22 2016

Wherever you are right now, there's probably an electrical outlet within easy reach.

Whether you want to vacuum the living room or recharge your phone, all you have to do is plug into the wall, and bam – instant access to electricity.

But have you ever wondered how all of that electrical power gets to your house, school, or office in the first place?

There are a lot of steps, but two of the most important ones involve electric generators and transformers.

And both of these devices work because of a concept we introduced last time: induction.

[Theme Music]

Electric generators are like the opposite of electric motors.

Motors take electrical energy – so, the current running through a coil of wire – and convert it into mechanical energy as the motor turns.

Generators, on the other hand, take mechanical energy – the rotation of a coil of wire – and use induction to convert it into electrical energy, in the form of a current running through a wire.

Generators use a wire wound around something called an armature – basically, a cylinder that rotates within a uniform magnetic field.

As the loop rotates, the changing magnetic flux induces a current in the loops of the coil.

But the angle that the coil makes with respect to the magnetic field keeps changing, which causes the direction of the induced current to reverse itself at every half-turn.

So the magnetic field in the generator stays constant.

But because the coil is rotating, the angle between the coil and the magnetic field changes.

This means that the magnetic flux through the loops in the coil changes over time, which is what induces an emf.

And as we'll soon see, the emf depends on the sine of the angle between the coil and the magnetic field.

So for half of the rotation, the sine of the angle is positive, and for the other half, the sine of the angle is negative.

When it's positive, the current flows in one direction.

When it's negative, it flows in the other.

This means that the direction of the current flips with every half-rotation.

This produces a type of flow of electricity known as alternating current, or AC.

Until now, we've mainly been talking about DC, or direct current.

There are DC generators, which include special parts to make the current keep flowing in the same direction the whole time, instead of reversing itself as the coil turns.

But AC power is the kind that flows from the outlets in your walls.

And in most places in the world, it reverses itself either 50 or 60 times per second.

This is called the frequency of the current, and you'll normally see it written in hertz.

Now, we can calculate the strength of the emf in a generator using some of the principles we talked about last time.

We've already described what happens when you move a loop of wire in or out of a magnetic field:

The emf induced in the wire is equal to the strength of the magnetic field, times the length of the loop, times its perpendicular velocity.

In other words, it's the velocity times the sine of the angle between the magnetic field and the loop.

And the same idea applies to a coil of wire rotating in a magnetic field, too.

We just have to replace some of the variables with ones that apply to a rotating coil.

First, instead of the length of the loop, we'll use the area of one loop of the coil, A.

And instead of translational velocity, we'll use angular velocity, ω.

Next, the angle, theta, is just equal to the angular velocity multiplied by time.

And finally, instead of finding the emf in just one loop of wire, we're finding the emf in a whole coil of wire.

Which means that we need to multiply this equation by N, the number of loops in the coil.

So, the emf induced in a coil rotating in a magnetic field is equal to the number of loops in the coil, times the strength of the magnetic field,

times the area of a loop of the coil, times the angular velocity, times the sine of the angular velocity multiplied by time.

It's a bit of a mouthful, but that's because there are so many factors that affect the emf induced in the coil.

Basically, the equation is saying that you'll have a greater induced current in the generator if there are more coils in the wire, or if there's a stronger magnetic field,

or if each loop of the coil is bigger, or if it rotates faster.

Now, it might seem kind of strange to have a generator produce a current that reverses itself dozens of times a second.

But actually, this is incredibly useful.

That's because another important device that gets electricity from the power plant to your house is a transformer, which is made up of two coils of wire.

And transformers only work with AC power.

They're necessary because one of the problems with transmitting electricity over long distances is that, if the voltage is low, a lot of power gets wasted as heat.

We're talking like 80% in some cases.

Which is a huge waste of energy!

When electricity is transmitted at higher voltages, though, much less power gets wasted as heat.

That's because, for the same power, a lower voltage translates to a higher current, and power loss increases proportionally to the square of the current.

In other words, if you double the voltage, you end up with only a quarter the power loss you had before.

And if you triple the voltage, you get a ninth of the power loss.

So it's worth transmitting electricity at very high voltages.

But then you need a way to change the voltage of the electricity running through the lines

– from its original voltage from the generator, which could be around 12,000 volts;

then up to a very high voltage as it travels long distances, which might be as high as 240,000 volts.

That's definitely not safe to use in your household appliances.

So once the electricity gets to where it needs to go, you need to lower its voltage again.

In the US, the power coming out of your wall is 110 volts, and in most other places it's 220 volts.

All those voltage changes are made using transformers, which take advantage of something called mutual inductance, where a change in the current in one coil leads to a change in emf in another, nearby coil.

And emf is the same thing as voltage.

This change happens because the changing current in the first coil produces a changing magnetic field.

So the magnetic flux through the second coil changes, which induces an emf.

And the emf induced in the second coil will be equal to the change in current in the first coil, divided by the change in time, and multiplied by a constant, M.

M depends on things like the size and shape of the coils, and how they're positioned relative to each other.

This works in the opposite direction, too:

a change in current in the second coil will induce a corresponding emf in the first coil.

In transformers, the power running through the first coil is AC, which means the current and the magnetic field it produces are constantly changing.

So an emf is induced in the second coil.

But if the second coil has more turns than the first, it'll have a higher voltage, and vice versa.

Here's why:

Faraday's law, which we talked about last time, says that the emf – or voltage – in each coil is equal to the number of loops in the coil, times the change in magnetic flux over time.

We can write this out as an equation for each coil separately, using a subscript P for the primary coil and a subscript S for the secondary coil.

Now, we want to know how the voltage in the secondary coil compares to the voltage of the primary one.

To find out, we divide the voltage in the secondary coil by the voltage in the primary coil.

The change in magnetic flux over time cancels out, which leaves us with a simple but useful equation:

The voltage in the secondary coil divided by the voltage in the primary coil is equal to the number of loops in the secondary coil divided by the number of loops in the primary coil.

So if the secondary coil has twice as many loops as the primary coil, it'll have twice as much voltage.

And if it has triple the loops, it'll have triple the voltage, and so on.

If the secondary coil has more loops than the primary coil, so that it increases the voltage, that's called a step-up transformer.

And if it has fewer loops than the primary coil, so it decreases the voltage, that's a step-down transformer.

As the electricity in power lines travels from the power plant to your house, it goes through lots of step-up and step-down transformers.

If you've ever seen a Tesla coil in action – that's just a fancy version of a step-up transformer.

The secondary coil is designed so that it shoots out bursts of electricity that look like lightning bolts.

Mutual inductance is also used in lots of other things, too – like wireless chargers, for example.

Lots of cell phones have a wireless charging feature, where you just put the phone on top of a charging pad and it charges.

No need to plug anything in.

It works because there's a coil inside the charging pad, and another one inside your phone.

The AC power running through the charging pad induces an emf in your phone's coil, which can use the energy to charge its battery.

So the same technology that helps get electricity to the outlets in your wall can move power from one device to another – even if there are no physical connections between them.

Today, you learned about how electricity is produced and transmitted.

We explained how electric generators work, and derived the generator equation.

We also talked about transformers, and how they use mutual inductance to change voltage.

Finally, we described how mutual inductance is used in wireless chargers.

The Evil Beside You - Who is the ghost...? (360° VR Christmas Horror Story with Spatial Audio) - Duration: 4:19.

(ALL) Yeah!

(Man A) It's Christmas! It's my favorite time of the year!

(Woman) Christmas! Christmas!

(Man B) Christmas!

(Woman) Hey, what's with the long face? What's wrong?

(Man A) Come on! It's a party!

(Man B) What's the matter?

(Man A) Stop being such a wet blanket.

(Woman) Come on, you. Don't be a drag.

(Man A) That's right! We've got roasted chicken and cake all ready and waiting.

(Woman) I bought the cake. I got it for you. Doesn't it look good?

(Man A) Looks good.

(Man B) Yes.

(Woman) I know.

(Man A) Let's dig in!

(Woman) Wait wait wait..you're getting ahead of yourself here.

(Man A) How did you know?

(Woman) It's obvious. That's not good. We'll share it equally.

(Man A) I'm sorry.

(Man B) Listen, listen…I have something to say. Will you listen to me?

(Woman) What is it?

(Man A) Tell me.

(Man B) Hear me out.

(Man A) What is it?

(Man B) This cake's fine but have a look at this salad!

I made this salad.

All the vegetables in this salad are completely natural.

Do you know what it means by all natural?

Not organic, but natural, right?

(Woman) Oh, no. here we go!

(Man A) Every time the subject of vegetables comes up he won't stop talking about it! He's a real vegetable freak!

(Man B) Speaking of organic farming

it is the cultivation using organic fertilizers such as animal excrement and plant waste.

On the other hand, natural farming is the cultivation

without any use of pesticides and fertilizers.

All natural vegetables are not widely available because they require great care

but they are scrumptious and bring out the original taste of vegetables.

…are you listening to me?

(Man A) I haven't been listen at all.

(Man B) You don't listen at all, do you?

(Woman) You get carried away.

(Man B) Why don't you listen to me?

(Man A) All your talk about vegetables is boring!

(Woman) Oh!

(Man AB) Oh my!

(Woman) What the…..!

That dog scared the crap out of me!

You're the one who brought it, didn't you?

(Man A) Ha-ha-ha! It scared you to death.

(Woman) Hey, are you listening?

(Man B) This dog has special powers.

(Man A) A super natural dog?

(Woman) Hmm, is that so?

(Man B) This dog protects people from bad things. It's a guardian against evil.

It's a Christmas present for all of us.

(Woman) You brought it?

(Man B) Uh-huh.

(Man A) Bringing a super natural lucky dog for Christmas...

(Woman) What does this mean?

(Man B) I don't know what it is…but having a party in this room just feels wrong?

(Man A) What are you talking about?

(Man B) I've got a bad feeling from this room.

(Woman) What kind of feeling?

(Man B) Can't you feel it?

There's a strange aura about this room.

(Man A) I can't really explain it.

(Man B) When you put it like that, I do feel a sense of being watched.

Things move around by themselves.

(Woman) Hey, come on, let's change the subject. Let's talk about something else.

(Man B) Don't you feel it?

This room is alive with something.

(Woman) Come on, hey, it's Christmas. Let's put a sock in it.

(Man A) You're scared, aren't you. Huh?

(Woman) ...um. I'm not scared. I don't scare easily.

Come on, don't look at me like that.

(Man A) Yeah, that's it. You're scared.

(Woman) No, that's not it. It's not that I'm scared.

I can't quite put my finger on it.

(ALL) Oh Gosh!

(Woman) Sorry, sorry. It was my alarm.

(Man A) Ah! Come one, cut it out. Are you kidding me? Your alarm?

(Man B) Stop it.

(ALL) OMG!

(Man A) What the….? Did something drop?

(Man A) What is this?

(Man B) I'm feeling queasy.

(Woman) If this is some kind of joke, cut it out!

(Man A) Nobody is doing anything!

(Woman) What?

(Woman) What the! I definitely don't like this room!

(Man B) I'm scared! I'm scared!

(Man A) What is going on?

(Woman) I quit!

(Man A) Come on, cut it out!

Mandu (만두): Eating Korean Dumplings and Manduguk (만두국) in Seoul, Korea - Duration: 7:18.

So good morning from Seoul, South Korea.

It is a beautiful day out and we are starving.

We haven't had breakfast today and it is almost lunchtime.

So we're going out for Mandu (만두).

Yeah, this is one of our favorite Korean snacks and we can't wait to show you what it is all

about.

Let's go eat.

Alright, so the dumplings have arrived.

Yeah, so super exciting moment for me right now.

Hahaha.

We really like this restaurant.

It is just behind Hapjeong station (합정역) and they do specialize in Mandu (만두) so

let's take a look down here.

Oh but first.

Oh, cool.

We also got Manduguk (만두국).

Gamsahamnida.

But back to the main dish.

Yeah, back to the main dish.

You ordered a platter of Mandu (만두).

Yep.

Do you want to tell us a bit about it?

So take a look down here.

This is called Modum Mandu (모듬만두) and what that means is kind of assorted Mandu

(만두).

So we got a whole bunch of different kinds.

There is kind of like there is your regular Kimchi Mandu (김치만두) there is your

meat mandu (만두).

I think there is a curry mandu (카레만두) and there is another kind so we're going to

sample all of them.

We're going to be trying all of those.

Five different types.

Yeah and you can see their different shapes too which is really cool.

Oh la lah.

And then the other dish that we got which is right in front of you if we look down there

is Manduguk (만두국).

So that is basically your Mandu soup.

So I'm starting with the rather unusual one.

This is stuffed with curry.

Mmmm.

It stuck to my palette.

There we go.

Yeah, so it is not your average Indian curry.

It is like your Korean curry so it is kind of mild, yellow in color and yeah it is interesting.

I've never had a curry dumpling before.

Mmmm.

Okay so we have two orange dumplings.

This one here and this one so it has to be kimchi (김치) just based on the color alone.

I'm not sure if there is a difference.

Maybe one of them also has meat.

I think the round one might have meat.

The one that you picked up.

So I'm just going to dig right in.

Mmmmm.

Oh my.

Spicy!

Spicy!

This is like kimchi (김치) and spice.

Wow.

Oh.

Weren't expecting that huh?

Whew.

Oh, your turn.

Haha.

So I've been having my Mandu (만두) plain but technically you're supposed to make a

little sauce for it.

Yeah.

So this is a kind of a soy vinegar mixture here.

Yeah.

So we're going to pour a bit of this in here and then we have kind of some chili powder.

Just a little bit.

That stuff is potent man.

So I'm going to mix that around with the chopsticks.

Yep.

And voila.

We have our mix.

So which one are you going to try?

Alright, I think I'll try this one over here which I'm not entirely sure.

I think this might be a gogi one which is meat.

But I'll find out in a moment.

So put it in the dip.

One bite.

Mmmm.

That is a sweet meat one.

Oh, maybe it is bulgogi (불고기)?

I think it is bulgogi (불고기).

It does taste like bulgogi (불고기).

There you go.

Oh man that is so good.

This place does awesome mandu (만두).

Alright, let's go in for round two.

Alright so round two will be the other mystery one.

That looks like the classic like pork, noodles.

Yeah, we'll see what that one is.

Again, you are right.

Haa.

How do you know all this stuff?

I know them all.

How do you know this stuff?

I come here very often.

This is a very budget friendly meal so when I was first teaching in Korea and I had no

money I would go and get mandu (만두) for like two dollars and fifty cents.

Haha.

So I mean we can't really go wrong with this.

No you can't.

Okay, and let's go for the third one that we haven't tried which is the other kimchi

(김치) one.

And hopefully that one won't be as spicy but we'll see how you fare.

Mmmmm.

You know what?

That one it is spicy but it also a bit sweet.

So I definitely think it is different from the one you had but you do taste the kimchi

(김치) but you also taste quite a bit of meat as well.

Oh.

Really good.

So for myself I ordered the manduguk (만두국) so let's have a look at the bowl here.

This is a very light broth.

It has some like some whisked eggs in there, um some seaweed, some pepper and lots of dumplings

so you can just fish them out and put them on this little side bowl.

So yeah this is kind of like the type of meal you'd want to eat if you have a cold or you're

feeling kind of sick.

It is nice fall food.

Yeah, it is like I see it as the Korean version of like a chicken noodle soup.

Even though there is no chicken but you know what I mean it is just like a light broth.

So there we have the classic mandu (만두) in there.

This looks like the pork, noodle, veggie variety.

And it is still steaming so I don't want to burn myself.

Yeah, that is something we have a bad habit of doing when we eat.

We often burn ourselves.

We don't blow on our food to let it cool down.

That is nice.

How is that?

I like this one because it is not spicy.

It is just like very mild simple food and we'll grab some egg and some seaweed.

And you know it is starting to get really cold out so it is also just a nice meal to

be enjoying indoors.

Mmmm.

That is really nice.

Love this dish.

It is a classic.

Alright Sam, so do you want to give us a lesson on the history of mandu (만두)?

So they think it possibly came from Mongolia or from the Middle East via Central Asia along

the silk road.

And so it shares a lot of similarities with Central Asian Manti (Manty) yeah.

Mahnti.

Manti.

And also Tibetan Momos.

Yeah.

And it also reminds us a little bit of the kind of dumplings you get in different parts

of the world like Pierogi in Poland and also empanadas in South America so it is a food

we're very familiar with and it is something we love.

Also when you come to Korea you can get them in different forms.

The ones we're having here are steamed but you can also get them pan-fried and they're

called gunmandu (군만두) and they're typically in Korean Chinese restaurants.

And you can also get giant sized ones and they're called Wang Mandu (왕만두) and

they're also really good so there is a lot of different ones you can try.

Highly recommend it.

It is one of our favorite Korean snacks.

In terms of price point the Mandu platter.

The modum Mandu (모듬만두) came to three thousand five hundred Won and the Manduguk

(만두국) the soup was five thousand Won so in total that was W8500 KRW.

So really good value.

That is about around seven US dollars and this place is so popular they have two locations

right beside each other and once again it is behind Hapjeong station (합정역) so

definitely check it out if you're in Seoul.

And someone has a mouthful of candy.

Yeah.

How are you able to speak?

I have two mints in my mouth right now.

So you get free candy at the end.

Multitasking over here.

Opposites Attract | A Healthy Relationship (Push & Pull) - Duration: 9:03.

Do opposites really attract? What type of opposing views

may spark our interest? Let's talk about that now.

[Autumn Asphodel]

Hi everyone! We are going to be discussing opposing views and

opposites attract. I'm sure we've all heard the saying that

opposites attract. In science classes, we've learned about

positive and negative interactions with atoms, and how

the opposites attract and the same repel one another. But,

does the same apply to human relationships? Often when we

look for friends, or especially a romantic partner, we only look

for similarities. But, it's the differences that really test the

relationship. It can be so exciting to meet someone who is

so similar to us as it makes us feel less alone. We finally

found someone who just gets us and understands us on a deep

level. Compare that to our total opposite who never understands

us. But, a relationship between two individuals that are highly

similar is a recipe for conflict. Let's put it simply as

to why the same may not work out in a relationship. Think of it

as a tug of war scenario. Each person is battling for their

rights, freedom, and ability to express themselves. For

instance, if you are a natural leader, and prefer to take the

lead with everything, and you are with a partner that also

likes to take the lead, that creates a conflict of interest

where both of you are battling for the right to be dominate.

Often times in relationships and getting to know new people, we

look for what we can connect on, our similarities. But, it's our

differences that will break the relationship. What is the worst

trait you dislike about someone else? The trait that will be

a deal breaker in any relationship? If you know what

that is, and begin to understand your friends and romantic

partners deeper to see what different views you all have,

that could be a place to start over what you two share in

common. Would it not be much more effective to bring to the

surface all the things that make you different than it would to

talk about your similarities for weeks and months, and then only

realize that they possess the deal breaker quality that you

cannot stand? There are certain traits, however, that are the

total opposite of us, at the present moment at least, that we

do find attractive. Specifically what this means is that we tend

to look for a partner that will give us what we want that we

lack within ourselves. For instance, we may fear social

interactions and have great anxiety when around people. But,

deep down we desire to be social. We try many times, but

it just causes us stress and more anxiety. We may then look

for a partner that is a very socially comfortable person who

has no problem meeting new people and forming friendships.

We may become interested in this person, not so much for them,

but for the quality they possess that we desire. It's the same as

successful business ventures. Let's say someone has been in a

highly creative field for a few years and are struggling to sell

their products. Their interest may be someone who has been in

the field for much longer and is more successful. No matter how

you look at it, we see the traits of others as how it would

apply to us. When we want a specific trait as our own, we

look for it and find people who possess it. However, this

doesn't always mean a romantic relationship would work.

Likewise, we could become interested in someone the total

opposite of this trait we desire that will ultimately let us

down. This dilemma is a sign that you have not moved on. For

instance, if you are needy and fear abandonment due to past

issues of abandonment and feeling alone, we may fall in

love with a partner that will ultimately abandon us because

those situations from the past will keep coming back until we

have resolved them. The abandonment by the other person

may not be intentional. Perhaps they work a job that requires

them to be away at the opposite time you are working, and thus

you feel alone. Whatever the case, unresolved conflict keeps

coming back so we can learn to overcome it. So you may be

asking, what would be the ideal relationship type? You cannot

have completely the same, nor can you have completely the

opposite. Rather, it's a combination of the two that can

provide the correct ratio of balance. Almost like two sides

of the same coin, it's different parts and different views, yet

still part of the same core being. This is how we should

look at our relationships. That we share a lot of common ground

and similarities, yet we are completely different in many

other aspects that ends up creating a more unified, fuller

relationship filled with more possibilities and growth. Like

putting together a puzzle. You both have different pieces, but

both do the action of bringing it together and do your part so

it stays together. It's a mutual effort and everyone involved has

to do their part. Think of it also like a push and pull

relationship. One person does the pulling from one end, and

the other does the pushing from the opposite end. Two separate

actions, yet still the same core that is being moved. This core

being the relationship, and the push and pull being you and your

partner, both working together, harmoniously. However, this

balance could be tipped and one could be doing more work than

the other. This creates conflict. Let's take it a step

further, if you two are on the same side, let's say both you

and your partner are pushing, then a relationship is so large

that you cannot see beyond it and not see what is along the

path and you could crash. Likewise, if both of you are

pulling, and you are not paying attention to the other side of

the box that begins to get holes and pieces of the relationship

fall off. So, that is why it is so important to have total

opposites in relationships, and why we love total opposites with

some traits, but also have some similar core values that both

people work together towards. Relatedly, realize that human

relationships are not only difficult, but many people do

not wish to put the time and energy into them. If you find

yourself in a situation where you are pushing or pulling too

much and your partner isn't, or you are not even involved in the

action of the relationship, like sitting inside the box and your

partner doing everything, then it's time to reevaluate your

relationship. The number one most important key in a

relationship is communication and making sure everyone is on

the same track and path. Compare it once more to the box

metaphor. If you partner is pulling and heading towards the

left, and you are pushing heading towards the right, the

box, or relationship, cannot go both ways. So, communication is

necessary to make sure everyone is on the same path and doing

their part to maintain the relationship. If you cannot

speak up to your partner about their lack of effort, or even

your own lack of effort, in the relationship, you have to ask

yourself if you are willing to risk additional conflict. If you

want to resolve the troubles with the relationship you need

to make your voice heard and also hear out your partner. So

in conclusion, a relationship is difficult. We must each do our

part to maintain it. Opposites do certain attract, but there

must also be a balance and a unified set of core beliefs that

can keep the relationship going. Don't think of a relationship

like tug-of-war, but rather a harmonious push and pull in a

unified direction. One person doing their part of pulling, and

the other doing their part of pushing. I hope this information

was informative and helpful to you. Have a wonderful day!
