In today's chess video, I am going to show you a cool little opening trick that will
help you win more games.

Hello Chess Friends, I am Jeetendra Advani.

We start with the queen's pawn opening - pawn to d4.
Our opponent responds with pawn to d5.
And then we play c4 - this is called the queen's gambit.
Now from here, there could be two variations.
Your opponent can take this pawn, which is called the queen's gambit accepted line.
Or he can decide not to take this pawn and play something like c6 or knight f6.
This is called the 'queen's gambit declined' variation.
In this video, I am only going to
focus on all the tricks and Traps in the queen's gambit accepted variation.
So after black takes this pawn on c4, we will play e3, attacking this pawn with our bishop.
As you can see, black is ahead by a pawn.
And most average players would try to hold on to this advantage.
This would be a mistake and that's what you need to exploit.
If I was black, I would simply forget about this pawn and focus on developing my pieces
like this and challenge the center.
But if black tries to preserve this pawn, then he is in big trouble.
If he defends with his bishop, then he is blocking his central pawn, which ultimately
blocks his other bishop.
So this is obviously not a good move.
Another option is to defend with the queen.
But bringing out the queen so early is never a good idea.
You can easily develop your pieces and attack the queen to gain a strong positional advantage.
So the only other option left is b5.
This is probably what most of your opponents will play when they are looking to defend
this pawn.
From here, you will follow the golden rule of attacking the defender.
So we play a4, attacking the b5 pawn.
Capturing the pawn will leave black with this terrible pawn structure.
So these pawns won't last long and then, you can easily expand your control of the center.
So going back, Another option could be to defend this pawn with a6.
But that's a big mistake because after a takes b5, black cannot take back.
Because if he takes, then he will lose his rook.
So Let's go back again.
Now you might think that black can defend this pawn with c6.
But there is a subtle trap here as well.
If he plays this, you will take this pawn, black obviously takes back.
And then you have a killer move here.
Can you spot it?
Yes, it is queen to f3 - hitting this rook on a8.
Believe it or not, the only way black can save this rook is by sacrificing his knight
or bishop.
So after all this, you will be up a minor piece and significantly ahead in the game.
So Let's go back again.
Now What if, in this position, black defends with his bishop by playing it to either a6
or d7.
Don't worry, I have a trap here as well.
First, you will simply take this pawn.
Then Black will obviously take back with his bishop.
Now you will attack this bishop by playing knight to c3.
Black has to save his bishop now.
He can either defend it or move it away.
He can't defend with a6 because this pawn is pinned.
Defending with the queen is never a good idea because again, it hampers piece development
and you can easily take advantage of that.
Going back, if he tries to defend with the c pawn, then after the following move sequence,
he won't be able to hold on to this extra pawn.
So this also does not work for him.
You need to remember the mentality of your opponent.
He is trying to hold on to this pawn advantage.
So the most probable move from him in this position would be bishop to a6.
He is holding this diagonal and supporting his pawn so that it does not get picked up
by your bishop.
But by doing this, he has just finished off his own game.
Let me show you how you can completely destroy your opponent from here.
You will start with the move queen to f3, attacking the rook on a8.
The most natural move would be to block with c6.
But Here's where the fun starts.
Our Rook will take the bishop.
Then his knight takes our rook.
Then queen takes on c6 and it's check.
Unfortunately for black, his king can't move, so the only legal move he has is queen to
d7.
We capture the rook this time.

queen.
We come back to c6 to give check.
Again, no legal moves, the queen blocks and we take the Knight this time.
Just look at this, black is completely out of this game, you should easily win it from
here.Now let me go back & show you a final variation.
In this position, instead of blocking with the pawn, black can play knight to d7.
This way the queen is defending the rook from being captured.
But the moment the knight moves, you can simply take this bishop with your rook and that's
again a significant advantage.
So in all situations, if black tries to hold on, you should be able to exploit this and
get into a match winning position.

TOP 3 TRAILY v BIKEPARKU KÁLNICA - Duration: 8:09.
Hey Guys!
I´m still in Bikepark Kálnica and I want to show you what this place is all about
Its not all about slopestyle and airbags, but mainly about the trails on the hill
The trails are interesting and quite unusual for our region
So I´m going to show you 3 trails I like the most here
I´ll start with one that is really easy
And then I´ll show you 2 that are a bit more difficult and are my absolute favourite to ride here
So I made it up to the top...
First line is called PumpLine Enduro, its quite easy
Good for beginners as you can ride all the bumps and dont have to jump it
So you dont have to be afraid there, but if you are more experienced, you´ll find a lot of jumps
Lets go check it!
so this is PumpLine Enduro
Start is pretty much flat and all these bumps are easy to roll over
So good for beginners, but its still a bikepark
so some skills on the bike are needed
really fun part, there is plenty of options for manuals or jumps
so even more runs is fun
but still quite good for beginners too
My bike is maybe even a too big for it, Enduro bike is perfect here i Guess
here i join the end of the freeride line which is a bit more difficult
but there is an option to skip this if you dont feel it
little step up here
thats PumpLine Enduro into SuperEnduro and the end is a Freeride line
ughh
So Im back up on top
the second trail Im going to show you is called big Vito
Its a freeride line with a lot of jumps and transfers
quite fast trail with a big step up in the middle
and definitely one of best trails they have here in Kálnica
So lets go
These is already quite big jumps
You need some skills, this is not for beginners
But those who can ride it will enjoy this a lot

These are the biggest jumps they have here in the bikepark
So its neccesary to have some experience with jumping before you´ll try this
quite big jumps tho

BIG TABLE FROM EPOXY! VERY SIMPLE METHOD - Duration: 10:43.
Hello dears!
Would you like to see my table at home?
This table consists of two "Soviet" tables,
which I got from the design Institute
and an old door.
Except that this door is flimsy - it bends if you lean on it,
I'm also annoyed by the web of wires that runs along the seat
And every time I sit in a chair,
I have to step over the wires.
So I'm finally ready to make myself comfortable,
beautiful and comfortable workplace.
In addition, I decided to expand it in width and length,
to all the equipment on it fit.
I decided to make this table from epoxy resin using a very simple technology
First, I assembled a frame of bars

The first time I filled the table was in June.
I calmly mixed the resin, poured the table and everything was fine
This time there was such a problem:
I took the epoxy and tried to mix the first batch

With this problem, I recommend to cope with,
initially to heat the resin.
For example, take a large bowl,
at him pour hot water and put the cans of resin
If you have already mixed the epoxy resin, you can heat it in a water bath.

Firefighters battling the Woolsey Canyon wildfire in Malibu, California saved the wedding dress of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Camille Grammer seconds before her home was destroyed, DailyMailTV can reveal.
The cherished designer floral dress - which Grammer wore to walk down the aisle in Hawaii less than a month ago - was saved along with other personal items as well as the star's two luxury cars.
The 50-year-old TV personality revealed early Sunday morning that her home was claimed by the fire, which wreaked havoc in the seaside community.
Now DailyMailTV has obtained exclusive photos of the blaze which shows her wedding gown in a garment bag sat next to a number of paintings and vases on a neighbor's driveway.
In an Instagram post, Camille wrote: 'Sadly my house couldn't be saved,' Grammer wrote next to an aerial photo of her home engulfed in flames which she posted on Instagram.
'The courageous firefighters were able to save my cars and personal items recovered from my home. I thanked the fire captain and his team of firemen for all of their hard work.
'He took the time to explain what happened and I'm grateful for all of their hard work trying to save my home.
Camille's floor-length sheer dress with floral cut-outs and an extravagant train was designed by Grammer's longtime friend and fashion designer Malan Breton and shipped to LA from Paris. Grammer wed David C. Meyer on October 20 in an intimate ceremony in Hawaii.
In the photos of the blaze Grammer's silver Ferrari 458 Italia and a white Mercedes sports car can also be seen intact nearby.

This table consists of two "Soviet" tables,
which I got from the design Institute
and an old door.

5 YEARS IN FRANCE: How Living in France Has Made My Life Better - Duration: 12:30.
Salut Youtube I hope you guys are doing good welcome to this video which is a
little bit of a special one because it's all about celebrating the fact that I've
been living in France for over five years now and I kind of wanted to mark
this moment with this video and talk to you guys about the ways that living in
France has made my life better. Of course life in France is real life it's full of
ups and downs it's not at all a utopia here but to celebrate my five years in
France I'm gonna take a look at all of the positive things or things that I've
learnt and the five ways in which my life has become better
thanks to living in France. Before I get into it I just want to show you guys
something special that I got to celebrate my five years in France which
is this beautiful map of Paris and not just Paris in general but my
neighborhood of Paris because when I think of Paris when I think of it being
my second home I don't necessarily relate to like you know the 20th
arrondissement the 14th arrondissement I really just think about my neighborhood
so I got this map printed on a site called Mapiful, you can choose literally
any location in the world country city like the most remote locations it's
super easy to use you just go on the website you choose your city you choose
basically the color scheme you want you choose what you want your text to say
and you choose the size of your poster I just thought this concept was super cool
because you can really choose like any city or country that's meaningful to you
maybe it can be your original home if you're living overseas maybe it can be
your new home if you've found a new home like me it can be a city where you fell
in love, anything really it's any place in the world and it's
something that you can kind of hang as art in your home and always have those
good memories associated with it. On this particular model I can just easily take

is that it's taught me to live in the moment which is something that I will
carry with me for the rest of my life I was just reading an article actually and
it was saying that there was a French teacher speaking to an American and they
were saying you know the big difference between you Americans and us the French
is that you live in the "faire" the to do and the "avoir" the to have state and we
live in the "être" in the to be state and this really resonated with me just like
those more American anglo-saxon cultures I also come from a very task-oriented
culture it's very normal to have a big to-do list to be busy a lot to
be planning all the time be planning for next week next month next year. I'll give
you an example you know I'm filming this mid-november and my family and friends
are already having conversations planning out what's gonna happen for
Christmas where they're gonna be what the day is gonna look like what people
are gonna eat what people are gonna bring like I almost feel like November
doesn't even exist because people are so busy looking forward to December and
Christmas that it just kind of flies by work it's the same concept we get in we
work hard we don't take a lunch break you know maybe a sandwich to eat quickly
20 minutes at our desk and we want to get out it's like to do it's go go go
like let's just get it done. The French have this way of slowing down and living
in the moment they're very conscious of what's happening right now so if you are
sitting on a terrace having a drink you will hear French people say things like
"on est bien là" like we're good here, life is good you know and they bring to
your consciousness the fact that in this moment we're having a good time. You can
see it in the way that they appreciate really long meals for example it's about
sitting down and enjoying a meal and savoring the
meal and savoring that moment. Something I've also noticed related to this point
is that they'll often point out things like "c'est beau!" oh it's beautiful oh wow look
at that look at that and it can be it can be a house but it can be a leaf it
can be a flower it can be you know very much again appreciating things in the
moment like wow that's beautiful look at the way that cloud is moving across the
sky and oh my gosh and that's very much an appreciation for the acidic and
visually pleasing and it doesn't have to be a beautiful statue it can be you know
the smallest things that nature has given us as well and I really also link
that to appreciating the moment having your eyes wide open, stopping to smell
the roses looking around you and kind of taking life in. I really think that when
it comes to the notion of time the French are more about appreciating every
day and making the most of every day rather than rushing through it and
always thinking 'what's next?' The second way in which living in France has made
my life better is that I now know for sure I mean it seems obvious but really
the good life, a really good life, is made up of the most simple things what I mean
by this is that French people of course when I talk about this it's in general,
its patterns of behaviour that I've picked up on, of course there's always
exceptions to every rule but they're not as materialistic, consumerist, they're
not always chasing the money you know they're not chasing money and
stuff and they don't have homes full of like ornaments and things and they don't
seem to be collecting stuff. When I have friends as that from America they
can be frustrated because they just don't have the 24/7 convenience culture
here things in a majority are closed on Sundays a lot of things are also closed on
Mondays and then it's a little bit shocking you know they can't have
everything they want when they want it. It's kind of designed in that way you
know on Sunday it's family time go for a walk spend a long lazy lunch with your
friends or your family it's it's not a day to go to the mall it's not a day to
go shopping just overall there's this feeling that
life is not about work and to dos and things and
possessions but it's around the time you spend and the moments you have with
other people, going to the Sunday market, buying fresh produce, cooking at home
having a long meal for example a slow walk in the park a game with friends
this kind of thing you get my drift and I guess it's kind of linked to the
priorities of France and a whole in a lot of ways I'm getting quite big
picture here now but when I came to France I was quite frustrated because I
felt that that the salaries were very low compared to what I was used to
and we paid a lot of money in charges and taxes and that kind of thing and I
didn't have as much cash and as much buying power going into my own
individual bank account but what I did have, and for all of the flaws of the
Social Security system, is a guarantee that I and people a lot less privileged
than I have access universally to free health care in general free education
even university here is incredibly cheap greatly great maternity leave all of
this kind of thing and so it goes back to the basic priorities right that
people have voted for a system in which they have less money and less cash to
spend on stuff and maybe I don't have as much cash to go and get my nails done
every few weeks for example but I can go to the doctor I can go to the dentist
whenever I want I can get new reading glasses the minimum in France is five
weeks paid vacation no matter what and then it you know goes up and up
depending on your privileges and your advantages. It's a mentality thing it's
around being able to "profit" as they say in French to really make the most of
life and that time is more valuable than money and possessions. The next way that
France has made my life better is that I've become an absolute pro at being
pushed out of my comfort zone so I've genuinely felt living here what it feels
like to be the outsider the minority I mean not just in terms of ethnicity or
nationality but opinion, mindset, values, just a different way of seeing
things and it's helped me to build empathy but it's also helped me realize
how tough it can be when you're not surrounded by people that think exactly
the same as you but how enriching that is as well. And I've had
experiences in France that do feel really difficult and really awkward and
I've been absolutely pushed to my limit of maybe embarrassment like I
don't know if you guys have seen my video on my embarrassing moments in
France but there have been a lot of them and I've had to do really tough things
like interviewing for a job and selling myself in French like ugh where I felt
like I sounded like a 10 year old. All of these experiences they seemed maybe
really tough as first but it's kind of like short-term pain long-term game all
these ways have been pushed out of my comfort zone, new culture, new language
new workplace new ways of making friends all this kind of stuff it's definitely
grown me as a person I've matured enormously I've got so much more
empathy for people now I've got so much more fascination and curiosity for
different types of people so yeah before I just didn't even know what I was
capable of and now that I'm like whoa if I can get through that if I can get
another visa in France, if I can conquer French administration, if I can
learn the language if I can do all of these things I can do anything! Another
way that France has made my life better is I am much more confident now in
expressing my opinions and being able to disagree with someone and I value
differing opinions of others I've realized that it's just waking up to the
fact that not everyone has to think the same. You know in France you can see
people absolutely debating in the workplace or even and I've dinner party
and people really going in and I completely disagree and there's no harm
done. From the outside you're like god why are these people fighting they're
allowed to disagree they're allowed to have passionate debates about
differing topics and completely disagree and still be colleagues and still be
friends and there's no harm done it's not personal it's absolutely okay and
it's encouraged to think differently to challenge each other to challenge each
other's point of view and I think it makes people better critical thinkers
more open minded so yeah I guess the gift here is just being able to value

without worry that it's going to offend and upset you know there is a right way
that you can do it. Last thing I want to talk about and there are so many ways in
which France has made my life better but I've only got so much time in this video
it's really a deeper consideration for our planet and for you know being
ecologically minded and I'm saying this out of a place where I'm coming from New
Zealand I thought that I was super green but in France it's really taking it to
the next level because the French people are so politically minded they're so
passionate about politics, people here seem to be very conscious of issues
like sustainability. In one of my very first culture shock videos I talk about
the fact that to shower a lot of them will run the water stop the tap
and then they will lather themselves, soap themselves I'll put the shampoo and
everything and then they turn the water back on and I used to think that was
crazy I was like how could you do that especially in the wintertime?!
The response was universal it's saving water it's better for the planet. There is this
concept of limited resources and it's very rare in France to find a tumble
dryer for example to dry your clothes. I've also found generally rather than
turning the heaters on and having the heat pump pumping away in winter for
example they always will like put on warmer clothes first. It's a mindfulness of not
wasting, not wasting energy, all these tiny little things here and there which
I think ultimately make a big impact. So yeah those are just five of the things
that have pushed me to be a better person and will ultimately have made my
life better and will make my life better thanks to living in France if you like

Hello.
In this video I'll show you how I refashioned this dress.
I didn't like how it fit, it seemed shapeless
so I turned it into this top with layered ruffles.
First I separated the dress at the waist.
On both sleeves I marked three 8 cm distanced points.
Those are points where the ruffles will start.
I cut the sleeves according to the points.
I measured circumferrence of the top edges. These are the measurements.
For each ruffle I made a pattern for a circle skirt.
I folded a paper in half.
I divided the circumferrence of the top part of the sleeve, those 36 cm by 6,28.
The result is 5,7cm.
From the top edge with the fold I measured those 5,7cm and connected the points.
From that curve I measured desired length for the ruffle, I chose 9 cm.
I connected the points.
Same way I made a pattern for the remaining two ruffles.
I duplicated all three patterns to have a corresponding halfcircle to each halfcircle.
I pinned all 6 halfcircles to the bottom of the dress that I had cut off.
It's two layers therefore I cut each halfcircle twice.
I then sewed the halfcircles into 6 full circles, 3 for each sleeve.
Right sides together I pinned the top ruffle to the top.
Then right sides together I slided the top piece of the sleeve over it and pinned it together.
I sewed it all around.
Same way I sewed on the remaining two ruffles.
This is one sleeve finished.
Same way I assembled the other sleeve.
Since the fabric doesn't fray I didn't hem the bottoms of the ruffles.
But I did hem the bottom of the top.
I sewed on elastic.
I sewed it to the wrong side of the fabric, I stretched it a bit while sewing and I used a zig zag stitch.
In the end I folded it inside and sewed it down.
So this is the final transformation.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is targeting a return to first-team action before the end of the season
and thanked Liverpool fans for their support – something he did not receive quite so
much of at Arsenal.
The midfielder injured his ACL while playing against Roma in the Champions League semi-final
last April and has been expected to miss the entirety of the 2018/19 season.
However, Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed that his recovery is going well – having started
kicking a ball indoors – and he hopes to get minutes under his belt before the season
is over.
Asked if he'll play this season, the Ox told Liverpool's official website: 'I
hope so.
The next target for me is to build up more in the gym, back towards being able to run
outside again and start plodding around the pitches.
'I probably have to do two months of running, which is not really my favourite thing either.
And then when the ball comes out it becomes easier.
'I'd love to be able to make an appearance at least before the end of the season, depending
on what we're doing and if I'm needed – I'm sure I won't be.
'Even when I'm back I won't be fully at the races or fully fit, but it would be
nice just to get a few appearances before the end of the season, probably more mentally
to prove that I can do it and then have a good pre-season and start fresh next season.'
Oxlade-Chamberlain has frequently spoken about the support he has received from Liverpool
fans since picking up his injury and says it marks a big change from his time at old
club Arsenal.
'I've had injuries in the past where it's been difficult because pressure from fans
has been "he's injured again" or "we can't trust him he's always injured".
'But I've got injured here and I've had nothing but positive feedback from the
fans, which for me I can't thank them enough and that's what keeps me going every day
to try and reward their patience and support.'
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier
League club Liverpool and the England national team.
On 31 August 2017, Oxlade-Chamberlain signed a five-year contract with Arsenal's Premier
League rivals Liverpool for a £35 million fee.
On 25 April 2018, Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered a serious injury to his knee in the 15th minute
of the Champions League Semi-final first leg 5–2 victory against A.S.
Roma, which prevented him playing further during the season, or participating in the
World Cup Finals.
On 18 July, Liverpool confirmed that Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the majority of the 2018–19 season,

Liverpool should be looking for long-term replacements for Adam Lallana in the upcoming
January transfer window.
The former England international seemed to have found his stride following the appointment
of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but injuries hampered his progress significantly.
Lallana missed the majority of last season and slipped down the pecking order as a result.
Following the arrival of Naby Keita and Fabinho in the summer, competition for places in the
Liverpool midfield is fierce.
Klopp has eased Lallana back into the first-team picture at Anfield, but his performances so
far have been extremely concerning.
The ex-Southampton man has looked off the pace and unable to find his rhythm in the
Liverpool midfield trio.
It wouldn't be a surprise to see the 30-year-old sold when the transfer window reopens in the
New Year.
As a replacement, Liverpool must be keeping tabs on Bournemouth hotshot – David Brooks.
Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the Wales international burst on to the scene last season
with Sheffield United – scoring a famous goal against Leeds United after coming on

Firefighters battling the Woolsey Canyon wildfire in Malibu, California saved the wedding dress of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Camille Grammer seconds before her home was destroyed, DailyMailTV can reveal.
The cherished designer floral dress - which Grammer wore to walk down the aisle in Hawaii less than a month ago - was saved along with other personal items as well as the star's two luxury cars.
The 50-year-old TV personality revealed early Sunday morning that her home was claimed by the fire, which wreaked havoc in the seaside community.
Now DailyMailTV has obtained exclusive photos of the blaze which shows her wedding gown in a garment bag sat next to a number of paintings and vases on a neighbor's driveway.
In an Instagram post, Camille wrote: 'Sadly my house couldn't be saved,' Grammer wrote next to an aerial photo of her home engulfed in flames which she posted on Instagram.
'The courageous firefighters were able to save my cars and personal items recovered from my home. I thanked the fire captain and his team of firemen for all of their hard work.
'He took the time to explain what happened and I'm grateful for all of their hard work trying to save my home.
Camille's floor-length sheer dress with floral cut-outs and an extravagant train was designed by Grammer's longtime friend and fashion designer Malan Breton and shipped to LA from Paris. Grammer wed David C. Meyer on October 20 in an intimate ceremony in Hawaii.
In the photos of the blaze Grammer's silver Ferrari 458 Italia and a white Mercedes sports car can also be seen intact nearby.
News photographer Patrick Fallon, who took the snaps, was outside Grammer's house as the Los Angeles Fire Department battled the blaze. 'It was a crazy scene, the firefighters did their best but just couldn't control the fire,' Fallon told DailyMailTV.
'They really seemed defeated that they couldn't save the house - they almost had it saved - but there was a lack of water pressure in the hydrants.
'Once the fire got in the attic of the home they just couldn't put enough water on it before running out. 'Engines and tankers had to shuttle more water up the hill.
'But while they couldn't save the house they did their best to save some of its contents. 'They saved Camille Grammer's cars and they retrieved a number of personal items which they took over to a neighbor's house.
'It was mainly paintings but I also saw them pull out what appeared to be a wedding dress kept in a garment bag and place it on the neighbors driveway.
On her Instagram page Grammer went on to count her blessings despite the heartbreaking circumstances.
'Sad we lost our home but grateful that my family is safe. Luckily we quickly evacuated our house yesterday after a patrol car drove up the street announcing mandatory evacuations.
'I'm grateful for my lovely neighbors and friends who kept me informed and for their help this evening.

Oumuamua: NASA Reveals More About Mysterious 'Alien Spacecraft' Interstellar Visitor - Duration: 5:44.
Astronomers spotted 'Oumuamua streaking through the inner solar system in October 2017 and
quickly determined, based on its trajectory, that it's not from around here.
No object from interstellar space had ever been confirmed in our solar system before.
Researchers, therefore, scrambled to learn more about 'Oumuamua, training a variety of
telescopes on the mysterious body as it barreled toward the outer solar system.
No instrument was able to resolve 'Oumuamua, but measurements of its brightness over time
indicated that it's an oddly tumbling, a needle-shaped rock perhaps six times longer than it is wide.
Astronomers also noticed that 'Oumuamua was displaying "nongravitational acceleration"
— a motion not attributable to the gravitational pull of the sun or any other solar system
body.
Such motion could be caused by "outgassing," strongly suggesting that 'Oumuamua is a comet
rather than an asteroid, scientists argued in a study published this summer.
A different research team from the astronomy department at Harvard University recently
put forward an alternative hypothesis to explain the acceleration — that 'Oumuamua may be
a "sailcraft" built by an alien civilization.
'Oumuamua was discovered on Oct. 19, 2017, by astronomers using the Panoramic Survey
Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) in Hawaii.
(The object's name means "messenger from afar" in Hawaiian.)
'Oumuamua's trajectory indicated that it's not from around here, making it the first
confirmed interstellar object observed in our solar system.
And 'Oumuamua is unique in other ways as well — in its shape, for example.
Observations of 'Oumuamua indicate that object is extremely long and narrow, measuring perhaps
1,300 feet long by 130 feet wide or (400 by 40 meters).
No other known cosmic object exhibits such a needle-like form.
Nobody knows for sure what 'Oumuamua looks like or how big it is.
Astronomers weren't able to capture a resolved image of the object, and estimates of the
visitor's size are based on its brightness (and a working knowledge of the reflectivity
of comets and asteroids).
It's been tough to nail down what 'Oumuamua actually is too.
Scientists initially regarded the object as a comet, but they reclassified it as an asteroid
after observations failed to reveal a tail or fuzzy coma.
But earlier this year, a team of researchers once again branded 'Oumuamua as a comet after
noticing that it displays nongravitational acceleration.
That's motion that can't be attributed to the tug of the sun, planets or other solar
system objects and therefore, (according to the authors of that previous study), probably
resulted from cometary outgassing.
That brings us to the new study, which Loeb conducted with lead author Shmuel Bialy, a
postdoctoral fellow at the ITC.
Bialy and Loeb don't think the comet explanation holds up because astronomers still haven't
spotted a tail or coma around 'Oumuamua.
In addition, outgassing would have altered 'Oumuamua's rotation period, an effect that
"would have been easy to identify," Loeb said.
"But we haven't seen such a change."
There's another possible natural explanation, he added.
If 'Oumuamua is just a fragment of a larger object, the observed motion could be from
the "kick" that knocked that fragment loose.
But such a kick would be a one-time thing, whereas 'Oumuamua has shown repeated nongravitational
acceleration, Loeb said.
So, Bialy and Loeb came up with a new hypothesis: Sunlight may be responsible.
In the new study, the duo determined that solar radiation pressure could cause the observed
nongravitational movement if 'Oumuamua is just 0.3 to 0.9 millimeters thick.
What kind of structure could be so gossamer-thin?
Bialy and Loeb suggested one candidate: a light sail, which is designed to harness the
momentum of photons as a propulsive force.
Humanity has already demonstrated this tech in space; Japan's IKAROS probe successfully
trekked to Venus' neighborhood in 2010.
(NASA's NanoSail-D2 and The Planetary Society's LightSail craft zipped around Earth in 2011
and 2015, respectively, but their missions primarily involved proving out sail deployment.)
Bialy and Loeb further calculated that a light-sail 'Oumuamua could probably survive a long interstellar
trek.
Given the concentration of gas and dust in the interstellar medium and the speeds at
which the object would encounter these deep-space flecks, the researchers determined that 'Oumuamua
could make it at least 16,000 light-years from its home system (whatever that may be
— 'Oumuamua's provenance remains a mystery).
"This is good news for SETI," Loeb said, referring to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
"This is not speculation," he added.
"It's evidence-based; we have an anomaly in the data.
The anomaly is that the orbit deviates from a Keplerian orbit — deviates from what gravity
alone would do.
And the [viable] explanations for that do not exist, other than the one that we are
proposing."
Space junk or spy craft?
To be clear, Bialy and Loeb aren't claiming in this study that 'Oumuamua is definitely
an alien spacecraft.
But they do think this is a real possibility.
The object could be a piece of alien space junk, a defunct sail craft that has accidentally
found its way to us.
Or it may be an active reconnaissance craft sent here to check out our solar system, the
researchers wrote in the study.
