What are those five bets to move from informal mining toward more sustainable and responsible mining?
Employment, education, internships, infrastructure and other forms of income
Let's begin with employment. This is another form of corporate social responsibility.
Multinational companies are responsible for creating jobs
Both, companies and governments are responsible for developing partnerships to foster employment
jobs should be created not only in mining but also in other industries relevant for the local economy, e.g. in agriculture, construction, among others
One of the hot topics nowadays has to do with women in mining
stakeholders should think about bulding capacity of the 'chatarreras' or informal female miners, so they can be part of the large scale mining company
The second aspect discussed today has to do with education. Education that is not only related to mining but also to areas relevant for the local economy
The thrid bet for sustainable mining has to do with internships or work experience opportunities
While undertaking fieldwork in Colombia, I met some students from one of the best Schools of Mines in Latin America
During informal conversation I had with them, they were unhappy as some of them were unemployed or were about to be fired
What is going on? If mining companies face a global skill shortage, why they do not invest in local human capital?
This will not only create value and corporate sustainability but also social sustainability in the long term
Instead, multinationals prefer to invest in foreign human resources neglecting the potential of local human capital
Companies should partner with education institutions and governments organisations providing capacity building initiatives to invest in local human capital
The fourth aspect has to do with infrastructure
But we are not talking about roads to transport the company's material or products. This is very good but this only benefits the company
we are talking about infrastructure for education. Infrastructure that benefits and creates value to the community
During my fieldwork I visited education organisations in resource regions and unfortunately I found they lack technological resources
Therefore, infrastructure for education has to be a constituent part of sustainability and corporate social responsibility agendas
The fifth bet or aspects discussed today has to do with entrepreneurship or other forms of income
The private sector has the potential to transfer knowledge to create new business across the mining supply chain
In this context, stakeholders should create businesses in construction and jewelry
There are very sucessful cases in which small scale miners have created added value to gold and silver
These five bets are responsibility of all stakeholders, namely, multinational and domestic companies, local and national governments and civil society, informal miners, among others
Investing on these five forms of human capital will allow stakeholders to move from ilegal and informal mining toward more sustainable and responsible mining in the long term

Hey people of the interwebs it is Q
with another dive conditions midweek
report and here at the Caloundra Coast
Guard jetty The Pumicestone passage is
looking very nice. Very flat, very clean,
dare I say, almost good enough to dive in!
And the flat conditions on The Passage
are from the current northerly wind
direction. But by the time we get around
to the weekend, the wind is going to
swing around completely and come from
the southeast for Saturday and Sunday.
It was impossible to film overlooking
Kings Beach today, simply because of the
parking situation. Everybody and his dog
is out enjoying this marvelous weather
and also the beautiful calm seas. But
down here at the Kings Beach boat ramp
I would estimate if you went into dive
today, the visibility would be probably
around about the 3 to 4 metre mark and
the good news is, it's likely to stay
that way right through the weekend. As
we move to the later part of the week
there's rain and a chance of storms, as
we get to Friday and Saturday and also
possible showers on Sunday.
At Shelly Beach there's a lot more exposure to the
current northerly winds and therefore a
lot more wave action and quite a few whitecaps out as far as the eye can see. But the good news is that the visibility
here is improving dramatically, I would
say if you went in here today there'd
be at least four metres of visibility
and I'm expecting that to improve by the
time we get around to Saturday and
Sunday. Taking a bird's-eye view from the
headland down onto The Keyhole dive site,
again confirming the visibility, if you
went in today, would be at least 4
meters and we are expecting it to clean up a
little bit more by the time the weekend
arrives. In fact there's actually a spearo
out there right now trying to catch
something. Still with this Northerly, there's whitecaps out as far as the eye can see,
but with the wind changing around to the
southeast for Saturday and Sunday the
surface conditions for diving Shelly
Beach or The Keyhole should be a lot
calmer. Demonstrating how strong the
current northerly winds are blowing,
we've got a couple of kite surfers out
here at Moffat Beach, where the surface
conditions are rough and ready.
Certainly not diving compatible that's
for sure and the visibility is slightly
reduced here, I would say probably
somewhere between 2 and 2 meters
at the most.
Your tide times for this weekend,
Saturday we have a low at 9:22am and a
high at 2:53pm. Sunday we have a low at
10:42am. and high at 4:03pm and as I
mentioned with the wind doing a complete
flip around by Saturday and Sunday and
coming from the southeast the swell on
both days is expected to be under 2
meters. So in summary I would say that
there's a very good chance of getting
some shore dives in off the Caloundra
coast here Saturday and Sunday with
calmer surface conditions being Moffat
Beach, The Keyhole and Shelly Beach.

But now it was already ten times when I was under the water
I've my divers log book. I'm trying
to become a good diver.
I need time, I need to improve my skills

I will be like a pro with all my friends.
