Is Earth the only planet with life? - Duration: 4:47.

(ringing)

- Hi, it's Doug.

The planet Mars is sometimes known as the red planet

and with good reason.

When scientists sent robotic landers to Mars,

they found lots of red colored rocks and even red dirt

similar to the kinds of red rocks and red dirt

you might find here on Earth.

They even found evidence that Mars once had a lot of water

but we've yet to find any sign of life on Mars.

Someone named Sanskriti has a question

about life on other planets.

Let's give her a call now.

(ringing)

- Hi, Doug.

- Hi, Sanskriti.

- I have a question for you.

Is Earth the only planet with life?

- That's a great question.

You might know that our solar system

has eight planets orbiting the sun,

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,

Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

but our planet, the Earth, is special.

It's the only planet that has life.

Why is that?

Why is Earth the only planet with life in our solar system?

Now would be a good time to pause the video and discuss.

Okay, you ready?

You might know that some planets are really hot.

Mercury and Venus, the planets closest to the sun,

reach temperatures over 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

At temperatures that hot,

you could cook a pizza in about 16 seconds.

So it's no wonder there aren't living things

on these planets.

The sun is the source of most heat in the solar system.

So the farther you get from the sun,

the star at the center of our solar system,

the cooler it gets.

The farthest planets are really cold.

The temperatures on Uranus and Neptune

are about 300 degrees Fahrenheit below freezing.

On the dwarf planet Pluto, it gets even colder.

About minus 380 degrees Fahrenheit.

Living things can't survive on planets

with extreme temperatures

that are either way too hot or way too cold

but somewhere in between there's a zone,

a place in the solar system

where the temperature is just right for life,

a place that's not too hot and not too cold.

Scientists have a special name for this zone around the sun.

They call it the Goldilocks Zone

as in Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Have you heard the story?

Goldilocks goes into the bears' house

and tries different things that belong to the bears

like the three bowls of porridge.

One is too hot, one is too hold and one is just right.

Earth is in the just right part of the solar system.

Earth is the only planet in the solar system

with liquid water on its surface.

In fact, that's where it gets the nickname the blue planet.

Earth is not so hot that all of the water boils into vapor

and it's also not so cold

that all of the water freezes into ice.

It's just right for life.

So that explains how Earth is unique in our solar system

but it's not necessarily unique in the universe.

It's not just our sun that has a Goldilocks Zone.

The sun is a star like the other stars in the sky

and every star has a Goldilocks Zone around it.

When you look up at the night sky,

there are millions of stars

meaning millions of places where life might exist.

Many scientists like Neil deGrasse Tyson

strongly believe that Earth probably isn't the only place

in the universe where life exists.

We just haven't found life on other planets yet

but scientists are hunting for it.

As of now, scientists have found over 50 planets

orbiting around other stars in the stars' Goldilocks Zones.

Who knows, maybe life exists on one of these planets

waiting to be discovered by a future scientist like you.

So in summary, so far scientists have only found life

on one planet in our solar system, the Earth.

Earth is in the Goldilocks Zone of our sun.

That's where it's not too hot or too cold.

Scientists are now searching for Goldilocks Zones

around other stars to try to find life

elsewhere in the universe.

That's all for this week's question.

Thanks, Sanskriti for asking it.

Now, for the next episode, I reached into my question jar

and found three questions submitted to me

that I'm thinking about answering.

When this video's done playing, you'll get to vote on one.

You can choose from

what's the difference between dry ice and ice,

what makes sloths slow

or how are pencils made?

So submit your vote when the video's over.

I wanna hear from all of you watching.

There are mysteries all around us.

Stay curious and see ya next week.

Why I choose humanism over faith | Leo Igwe - Duration: 10:20.

Something happened

while I was studying in the seminary

and training to be a priest.

I came in contact with a different idea of life.

An idea of life that contradicted the main teachings of religion --

humanism.

Some of you may be wondering, what on earth is humanism?

Humanism is a way of thinking and living

that emphasizes the agency of human beings.

Humanism stresses the fact that we, human beings,

are capable of changing the world.

That we have the power to make a difference in our lives,

both individually and collectively,

without recourse to some outside force.

It may interest you to know that the best humanist lessons I learned

were not from reading philosophy books

or from poring over humanist manifestos and declarations.

No, not at all.

The best humanist lesson I learned was from the life of my own parents.

My parents come from a poor family background

in Mbaise, in southeastern Nigeria.

They had limited opportunities.

But my parents did not allow the circumstances of their bad upbringing

to determine the ambition and dreams for themselves and for their children.

My father worked part-time, trained as a teacher,

and rose to become a headmaster at a local primary school.

My mother dropped out of school quite early,

because her mother, my grandmother, could not afford her education.

As a parent, my mother worked very hard,

combining farming, petty trading and taking care of my siblings and me.

By the time I was born --

that was shortly after the Nigerian civil war --

life was very difficult, a struggle day by day.

My family was living in a hut.

With the eye of a child, I can still see water

dripping from the thatched roof of our house when it rained.

My father reared goats to supplement the family income.

And part of my duty after school hours or during vacation

was to feed these goats.

There was no electricity, no pipe with water.

We trekked to fetch water from the nearby streams.

That was an easy work in the wet season,

but kilometers when it was hot and dry.

Through hard work and perseverance,

my parents were able to erect a block apartment

and send my siblings and me to school.

They made it possible for us to enjoy a standard of living

which they never did

and to attain educational levels

which they only imagined when they were growing up.

My parents' life, their story, is my best lesson in humanism.

So as a humanist, I believe that human beings

are challengers, not prisoners of faith.

Our destinies are in our hands, not predetermined.

And it's left for us to shape our lives and destinies

to reflect our best hopes and aspirations.

I believe that human beings have the power

to turn situations of poverty into those of wealth and prosperity.

We have the capacity to alleviate suffering,

extend life, prevent diseases,

cure debilitating ailments, reduce infant mortality

and preserve our planet.

But we cannot accomplish all these goals by wishful thinking with our eyes closed

or by armchair speculation or by expecting salvation from empty sky.

In contrast, millions of Africans imagine that their religious faith

will help their dream come true,

and they spend so much time praying for miracles

and for divine intervention in their lives.

In 2009, a Gallup survey in 114 countries

revealed that religiosity was highest in the world's poorest nations.

In fact, six of the 10 countries where 95 percent of the population

said that religion was an important part of their daily lives, were African.

In some cases, religion drives many Africans to extraordinary length:

to attack other human beings, to commit ritual killing,

targeting those living with albinism,

those with a humpback,

and as I recently learned, those with a bald head.

In Africa, superstition is widespread,

with so many people believing in witchcraft,

something that has no basis in reason or in science.

Yet alleged witches, usually women, children and elderly persons

are still routinely attacked, banished and killed.

And I've made it part of my life's mission

to end witchcraft accusation and witch persecution in Africa.

So as a humanist, I believe in a proactive approach to life.

The changes that we want cannot be achieved only by dreaming

but require doing as well.

The challenges that we face cannot go away

if we recoil and retreat into our shells, wishing and imagining

that those problems will somehow magically disappear.

The good life that we desire will not fall like manna from heaven.

My parents did not erect a block apartment by wishing and dreaming.

They worked hard, they failed, they tried again.

They toiled with rolled-up sleeves,

with their hands deep in debt, they plowed ahead,

growing their dreams into reality.

So as a humanist, I believe we must be adventurous and even daring.

The path of success is paved with risk and uncertainties.

We have to muster the will and courage to do what people have never done.

To think what people have never thought.

Envisage what people have never imagined.

Go to places human beings have not been to.

And succeed where people have tried but failed.

We must be ready to explore new frontiers of knowledge and understanding

and attempt doing not just what is possible

but also what is seemingly impossible.

But I realize that at the end of the day,

our efforts do not always yield our desires.

We fail, we suffer disappointments and setbacks.

Some problems, such as wars and conflict, poverty and diseases

and other natural and human-made disasters

seem as if they may never go away.

Solutions to old problems have led to new dangers,

new cures to diseases have resulted in new health risks.

But the fact that these problems persist

and that solutions sometimes create their own problems

is not a reason for us to give up or to resign.

It's not a reason for us to think that our efforts are of no consequence.

In fact, there is fulfillment in striving,

and trying to provide answers and solutions

to the problem humanity faces

even when the likely outcome is failure.

So as a humanist, I believe we must not despair for humanity.

Even in the face of overwhelming difficulties

and in the bleakest of circumstances.

Human beings are creative beings.

We have the power to generate new ideas, new solutions and new cures.

So why despair when the unexpected knocks on the horizon?

It is in our nature to create anew, to be inventive and innovative,

so why languish in idle expectation of a savior from above?

So it is time for us Africans to take our destiny in our hands

and realize we have agency in the scheme of life.

We need to put an end to this game of blame

that has prevented us from taking full responsibility for our own lives.

For too long, we have been prisoners of our past.

We have allowed despair and pessimism to drain us,

drain our energies, limit our imaginations

and dim our vision for a better and brighter future.

We have let this continent flounder.

Why passing the buck like a Frisbee?

We've blamed slavery, colonialism and the new colonialism

for the woes we experience, including our own self-inflicted wounds.

We have conducted ourselves

in ways that seem as if Africa is damned and doomed.

And that all these experiences in history

have irreversibly, irreparably foreclosed the chances and possibility

for Africa to emerge, thrive and flourish.

We must realize that there is no part of the world

that has not been colonized or enslaved in the past.

And if other parts of the world have moved on,

why can't we, now?

So as a humanist, I believe that the past is gone;

we cannot change it, we cannot alter it.

But the future beckons us on with limitless possibilities

to recreate, reshape and remake our destinies.

So let's all of us seize this opportunity.

And as my parents did, begin the urgent task

of rebuilding Africa, brick by brick.

Let's give free reign to our ideas and imaginations,

as demonstrated at this TEDGlobal 2017.

Let's open our hearts and minds.

And exert our energy, intelligence and ingenuity

and begin the urgent task of rebuilding Africa

and of transforming this continent

into a citadel of unrivaled prosperity and civilization.

This is what I believe as a humanist, as an African humanist.

Thank you.

(Applause)

It's Time For a Counter Attack Against USA! - Top Russia's Pundit Semyon Bagdasarov - Duration: 3:59.

Now, to the point. We often underestimate the West.

We say they are falling apart. The US hegemony is ending. No, we must not underestimate the enemy.

You can say you've defeated the enemy when your foot is on his throat and you've strangled him.

This is still so far away.

Karen Shahnazarov: Why are you looking at me?

Bagdasarov: Why? I cannot look at you?

Solovyov: Looking at a good man!

Bagdasarov: At a good man with the name Karen!

Good respectable name.

Karen: He threatened me with this "to step on a throat". (laughing)

Bagdasarov: I don't understand how did you see a threat with these glasses. Don't interrupt me.

So... We must not underestimate them. They impose us all sorts of strange things. Salisbury. Then the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

And we make excuses. We go in defense. We say "It's not us". And tomorrow they will come up with something else.

Listen, it's time to counter attack.

In the information area. In reality we do nothing.

We should accuse the United States of: Killing 1.5 million Iraqis.

The destruction of the country.

The destruction of the enormous cultural layer.

The death of entire ethnic groups.

The annihilation of the Christians there because of them. And we are Christians here, too.

We don't do any of that.

Maybe we should start to act.

You say Libya. Libya is a country where a lot of people are ours, they have studied here.

2 governments. In Tobruk. Unfortunately Haftar got ill now. But there is also in Tripoli.

Amazingly, in Tripoli they are positive to us, too.

They say "Be friends with us as well, we control an oil terminal where the oil in Libya is more than in Qaddafi times".

Why aren't we cooperating with everyone?

The president of Egypt el-Sisi may be offended. But we will work with Tobruk and Tripoli

After all, why are we not doing this?

Iraq. We say, oh there are Iran and the US.

When the Soviet Union had an influence in Iraq, and we are the successor of the Soviet Union, the Iraqis couldn't care less about the Iranians. About the Americans they were like "who do you think you are?". And they were friends with us.

Hundreds of thousands of officers of the Iraqi army and other structure have studied here in different academies, military schools

I know personally many of them.

They were expelled at first from Iraq but then many have returned and they have adapted.

Are we working with them?

Do we want to raise our influence there?

Iraq is more interesting country than Syria.

Are we working there? Why are we not working there?

Yes, some of our oil companies work there.

Good. But what about the political aspect?

We supply them with weapons.

T-90. The best tank in the world. Unlike the Abram from your favorite America. Pfuu!

Some Chinese red Strela (arrow, anti-tank weapon) from the 70s destroyed that overpraised clunker.

They (Iraq) want to buy from us more weapons for their aviation. Also S-400. The Americans are pressuring them though, just like with other countries.

Let's press out the Americans from there.

We can press out the Iranians also.

Iraq is not that far away from us.

From the Armenia-Turkey border that our border-guards control to Iraq there are 320 km.

What are 320 km? Nothing. You can take them walking. Me and Karen can do it.

And at the end, we raised the question today. They've imposed it on us that the Taliban is a terrorist organization. You know, because of the twin towers.

My question is, how many of our people have died from the hands of the Taliban after the withdraw of the Soviet army from Afghanistan?

And how many have been killed by Ahmad Shah Masud? With whom we worked with after that.

I have a photo, there are photos in the archives, of Qazi Kabir, the commander of the 55th division of Ahmad Shah. He was killing our military service man.

But there came a time when we cooperated with Ahmad Shah. And what have the Taliban done to us?

Only many times we've said that we don't want to interfere.

Invite their delegation here. For the sake of the peace in Afghanistan.

Finally today I've heard another good news. Volga-Dnepr the airline that I've criticized while I was an MP for helping the Americans to carry cargo to Afghanistan.

Finally they have refused to work with NATO countries to carry cargo to Syria. Well, thank you, Lord! After almost 10 years they did something!

BREAKING News Out Of San Francisco, THEY JUST PISSED OFF A WHOLE LOT OF LIBERALS!!!

As homeless encampments continue to crop up in San Francisco, the city's leader is promising

an "aggressive" crackdown starting this week in one neighborhood to clear sidewalks

of tent camps for good, Fox News reports.

The return of tents in the Mission District has Mayor Mark Farrell promising an "aggressive"

crackdown of sidewalk camps next week, and this time he's vowing to keep them out,

the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"Enough is enough," Farrell said Friday.

"We have offered services time and time again and gotten many off the street, but

there is a resistant population that remains, and their tents have to go."

When it comes to tent camps, Farrell added, "We have moved as a city from a position

of compassion to enabling (unacceptable) street behavior, and as mayor I don't stand for

that."THEY JUST PISSED OFF A WHOLE LOT OF LIBERALS!!!

The city plans to conduct sweeps starting this week through the city's Mission District

to clear out tents set up along sidewalks.

As a supervisor, Farrell was behind legislation passed by voters that allows the city to remove

tents as long as they provide alternate shelter and give one day's notice.

There have been sweeps in the area before, but campers returned days later or simply

moved a few blocks away, according to KTVU.

Farrell said this time will be different, as the city plans to have a "dedicated team"

to make sure people don't come back.

I mean, these people are crapping on sidewalks, shooting up drugs and throwing their syringes

in the streets and all sorts of garbage.

But homeless outreach groups (libs) contend the mayor's action may just be moving the

problem elsewhere.

"Without a relocation plan, it's just more of the sidewalk shuffle," Jennifer

Friedenbach, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness, told the Chronicle.

Well Jennifer, it looks like you are taking home a huge paycheck for sitting on your fat

a**.

Friedenbach told the paper many tent dwellers suffer from mental illness, and "don't

fit into a crowded situation" if put into a shelter.

Farrell, however, is pushing on.

"The tents are a public safety hazard for the people living in them, and for the residents

of San Francisco," Farrell added.

"And they are gone."

Facebook vs Google, Wabi-Sabi, & Why you should consider creating more unpolished videos! - Duration: 4:58.

Hello everyone! I'm here to share the 3 marketing insights that have fascinated

me this week. So, the first is Facebook versus Google, the second is wabi-sabi,

and the third is whether or not you should be using more imperfect videos to

share your story. So let's get started so 1. Facebook versus Google.

Recently I was hired by a non-profit that's a youth serving organization

that's teaching STEM, so science and math, to underserved youth. I am so

inspired by them and so excited to work with them and the first thing that we're

working together on is a problem that they have, which is they want to

fill three to four spots with children ages 5 to 7 and they wanted to

see whether social media marketing might help them out and so we decided to test

out whether or not Facebook or Google would be more impactful in helping them

fill seats. So over 4 days we ran a campaign. On Facebook we only spent

$25 we got 34 clicks and so the cost per click was only 74 cents. In contrast, by

running a Google campaign, where their nonprofit website showed up on the first

page of Google, it cost 78 dollars over the 4 days, only got 18 clicks, and

the cost per click was four dollars and 33 cents. So I don't know about you, but

my biggest takeaway is there are obviously many factors that play into

whether or not a campaign is successful right? The reason Facebook might

have been more successful was that people really liked the image that we created

or the ad we created, but my biggest takeaway personally is that it's just a

reminder that we have to experiment we have to test things out, we have to compare

different platforms, and see that, for the goal that we're trying to achieve, let's

test out which platforms going to work best serve us. So, moving on to number two,

which is Wabi-Sabi. So, if you've never heard of it before, Wabi-Sabi is a

worldview that there is beauty in imperfection. I first heard about it in a

recent Seth Godin Akimbo podcast (episode), which I'm a huge fan of, on Quality

and Wabi-Sabi, and I highly recommend you check it out and then more recently I

heard about it from Candice Kumai, who has a book coming out this week called

Kintsugi wellness and she was featured on another one of my favorite podcast :

One Part plan. Yes I listen to a lot of podcasts. I'm a little bit nerdy about it...

but her interview was incredible and her book is obviously a labor of love. She

spent the last three years exploring her Japanese heritage, she worked with her

mom on the book and it seems to explore such beautiful traditions and concepts

For me personally as a content creator I've been thinking a lot about

Wabi-Sabi and what it means to me. How can I create beautifully handcrafted

content that's beautiful even in its imperfections. For example, these

videos - sometimes the way I communicate is 100% imperfect,

according to... at least based on my standards... um, I sometimes say the word "um"

and sometimes I'm not perfectly well-spoken,

but yet I hope that this content is helpful and meaningful to you and that

you won't let perfection stop you from creating something that matters and is

impactful. So related to that is number three - so should you be using more

imperfect videos to tell your story? So a

recent Forbes article came out that suggests that social entrepreneurs have

a secret weapon and that is essentially the power of their story and what the

article goes on to explore is that one of the greatest things you might be able

to do to connect with the people that support you is to take videos of you

doing the work to take videos of the impact that you're having and they

actually suggest, and this is what surprised me the most, is that imperfect

video shot on an iPhone might actually be just as effective,

if not more than, professionally made videos and the reason they're

recommending video is video is performing best on all social media

platforms and I personally have been experiencing that so I highly recommend

you try out video. So based on this article it begs to question - should you

be testing out more imperfect videos that tell your story and tell your story

in different angles that might help you to connect and further engage with the

people that care about your cause. So with that, I hope you have a wonderful

week. I hope that these three insights are helpful and we'll talk soon. Bye y'all!
