Youtube daily report Nov 15 2018

Buh-clue.

Hi.

I'm Ronnie.

I have something that...

Oh my god, this is amazing.

Honestly, this lesson will change your life.

It changed my life when my good friend, Leaf, told me about this.

Leaf, thank you; grammar god, you are pronunciation god - Leaf.

Awesome.

So, I've been trying to figure this out for ages, years, maybe 100 years because I'm a

vampire, and I got it.

Thank you.

Are you confused about the pronunciation of vowels in English?

So, for example, we have a long vowel sound, and a long vowel sound means that the vowel

sounds like its alphabet name.

So, for example: "a".

But in English, we also have: "aw" and "a".

Different ways to pronounce the vowels.

One of them is a long vowel sound, so "a" is pronounced like "a".

Then we also have a short vowel sound where "a" is going to be pronounced like: "ah".

And how do you know when you read a new word to say it like "a" or "ah"?

I have the answer.

Oh, it's amazing.

I...

Okay, I get really excited about things a little bit too much; but this, I'm just super

excited about it.

And I want to teach you this - and, geez, it's going to change the way that you read

things, the way that you learn English.

So, give me some money or something.

Just, enjoy.

Listen.

It's amazing.

So, we have some guidelines.

Now, I want to make perfectly clear that people like to say "grammar rules", and Ronnie hates

rules.

I'm Ronnie.

I do not like rules because they're made to be broken; and in English, there's always

exceptions to rules.

So, you study a rule and you learn it, and then you go: "Oh", but no - sorry; that's

an exception.

And then you say: "Why?"

Maybe you ask someone, maybe you ask your teacher: "Teacher, why?" and the teacher goes:

"I don't know."

So, please think of these as only guidelines; life-changing guidelines, though.

Okay?

I'm telling you.

So, we have words that have two vowels.

Okay?

So: "a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and sometimes "y" are vowels.

But this is our guideline: If in the word you have two vowels, the first...

Oh, I'm sorry.

The first vowel sound...

The first vowel in the word is going to sound like its alphabet name or it's going to sound

like a long vowel sound.

The second vowel, it's silent; we don't even say the second vowel.

Crazy.

So, in English, if there's an "e" at the end of the word - we don't say it.

In all of the other languages of the world, we say all the vowels; but English, oh no.

The "e" is silent; we don't say that.

So, if you have two vowels in the word, for example: "a" and "e", we're going to say the

first vowel like it sounds like in the alphabet, so "a".

We're going to say: "ba", and we do not say: "bak-e"; we say "bake".

So, the first vowel is going to sound like the alphabet: "bake".

What about this one?

We don't say: "fah-me", like "ah"; we say: "fame".

And, again, we don't say the last vowel in the word.

So, this works with two-vowel words.

The "a" we pronounce like an "a", and the "e" or the second vowel is silent.

One more time the rule; it's life-changing.

The first vowel sounds like its alphabet name, the second vowel is silent; we don't say it.

Let's try this again.

So, this is "a".

The next letter.

What's this vowel sound or what's this sound in the English alphabet?

"A", "e".

So, we say: "these".

We don't say: "the-se", "the-se".

"Look at the-se.

Look at these."

So, again, we're going to say the "e" like an "e", and the second "e" is silent.

This is amazing.

Woo-hoo.

This word.

So, you look: "dre-am".

"I had an amazing dre-am last night; I was flying."

But it's actually just a dream.

So, one vowel we're going to say "e", the second vowel is silent.

So, we don't say: "dre-am"; we say: "dream".

"I had a dream."

Did you have a dream last night or now?

Are you imagining this?

No.

No, no, no.

This is real.

Get back into this.

It's amazing.

Let's see with this letter.

What letter is this?

Now, this is hard for you guys because in your languages maybe this is "uh" and this

is "e", but in English, this is "i".

So, watch this trick.

Put an eye-woo-hoo-on your "i".

So, this is the pronunciation of the letter "i".

So, this word is "pie".

We don't say: "pi-e".

"I'd like some pi-e, please."

This word is "ice"; we don't say: "ic-e" or "ec-e".

Okay?

So, again, we're going to say the "i" like an eye, and the "e" is silent.

"Pie", "ice".

Well, this is making sense.

I wonder who made this guideline.

Why didn't they tell me before?

This word: "drone".

Do you know what a drone is?

Do you know what pie is?

It's delicious.

But a drone is something that...

Like, a remote control aircraft that you can make fly and find aliens.

What?

If you don't know what a drone is, Google it, because I'm not Google.

So...

Or Yahoo, whatever.

A drone, we're going to say the "o" sound.

"O".

So, we're going to say: "drone"; not "drune", not...

Again, we're going to pronounce this like an "o"; we're going to say: "drone".

What about this word?

This is confusing English.

"Soap" and "soup" Hmm.

Again, these are guidelines.

So, "soap", we don't say: "so-ap".

"I used some so-ap yesterday.

It was delicious."

We say: "soap".

So, we don't even say the "e" because the second vowel is silent.

We only say the first vowel.

It doesn't have to be an "e" at the end; if there's two vowels together, we're going to

say the first one here and we're not going to say the second one.

Damn, this is great.

Great content, Ronnie.

The next one, oo, so cute.

Eee.

"Cute", again, "u", "u", "u'.

You, you're cute.

So, "cute" is "c-u-t-e", so we say: "cute".

What's this word?

This is a girl's name, it's "Sue".

It's also a verb.

So, we say: "u".

"Sue" and "cute".

Again, we're not going to say the "e" at the end of the word.

Are you getting this?

This is fun, this is easy; I love this.

Now, English just became easier for me; and I can imagine you, too, I hope.

So, let's go to the second one.

So, remember: If in one word you have two vowels together or two vowels, the first one

is going to sound like its alphabet name and the second one-shh-is silent; we don't say

it.

Okay?

If we have one vowel...

So, if we have a word that only has one vowel, then our game is a little bit different.

And, again, this is a guideline; not a rule.

The vowel sounds like a relative.

Now, not your aunt or your uncle.

A relative means, as I said, the short vowel sound.

So, instead of having "a", it's "ah".

So, we don't say: "hayd"; we say: "had", because there's one vowel - it's going to be the short

vowel.

We don't say: "jaym"; we say...

Oh, hi, James.

We don't say: "jaym"; we say: "jam".

So, these vowels are "ah"; not "a" because there's no vowel...

There's no two vowels; there's one.

The next one: "I'm going to go to bed.

I'm not going to go to bead", but I'm going to go to "bed".

If we said it like this, it would be "bead" and this would be "beand", which sounds like

I'm from New Zealand now.

So "uh": "bed"; "uh": "bend".

There's only one vowel, so you're going to say it like a short vowel - "bed", "bend".

Next one, it's a man and it's "him" - "uh", "uh".

This word: "pin", "pin".

"I have pins.

I have safety pins as a bracelet."

Don't steal my idea.

"Him", "uh"; and "pin", "uh".

We don't say...

Oh, I can't even say this: "he-, hime.

Hime.

Hime.

Did you see hime?

This pine is amazing."

So, we say: "him" and "pin".

In this letter, "o", if it's said like the alphabet, it's "o"; but when it's like this,

it's "aw".

"Aw".

So it more sounds like this.

"Aw".

Some people...

If you're cute-oo, oo, ute-if you say: "Aw, you're cute."

So, this word is: "hot", this "aw" sound and this is "snot".

Do you know what "snot" means?

It's one of my favourite words.

"Snot" is something that comes out of your nose if you have a cold, with liquid, like

nose water.

We don't say "nose water" in English; we call it "snot".

Yup.

So, snot-woo-hoo-mucous - we don't say: "snowt"; we say: "snot", like the word "not".

We don't say: "sume"; we say "uh": "some".

So, we don't use the "u"; we use "uh".

And we don't get on the "baws"; we get on the "bus".

So we have "some" and "bus".

Do you understand this?

I hope so.

I think the most difficult one is the two-vowel guideline - that one has been plaguing me

for years.

I am teaching you English, but I'm not te-aching you English.

I'm only teaching you.

So, if you'd like to grab a cup of tea and review this, I promise it will make your pronunciation

of English words, when you're reading new words, like a breeze, which means very, very

easy.

And, again, thanks to Leaf.

Wow.

And thanks to everyone out there for watching.

I'm Ronnie, and I will te-ach you soon.

No, I mean teach.

Bye.

DENMARK or GERMANY - Which Country is Better? - Duration: 12:40.

So here on FTD facts

We've looked at the countries of Germany and Denmark and we've learned a lot about them

and as a matter of fact

We've bounced back and forth between these two countries to find out what is great about them in their own particular

Individual ways how I refer today on FTD facts just for fun

We are going to look at the country of Denmark and Germany and see which one is better. Hey everybody what's going on?

Welcome to FTD facts

My name is Dave Walpole and welcome to a channel where I look at

Countries and cultures and we go into great detail to learn about them now

Of course, you're looking at this video title and you're going wait a minute. What are you trying to say?

Well here I don't specifically like to say which country is better

That's really for you guys to decide they are just fun videos

But the point of these videos is to really to get neighboring countries to actually learn about each other and the cool

statistics

Within each nation that being said guys if you're liking this video

Don't forget to give it a big thumbs up because we're always doing Denmark content and we're doing German content

So if you guys want more content around that sort of stuff be sure to hit the like button because we will look into it

But anyway, let's get started looking at the country of Germany and looking at the country of Denmark now

Although the two do have some very similar things within them

They are their own particular nations and they have their own individual history but to start this video

We need to start looking at the very basic information. And that is the population for example within Germany

Let's start off with that. It has a population of eighty two million eight hundred thousand people now that is out of a

2017 estimate which makes it ranked 16th in the world when it comes to population of this its population density sits at

232 people per square kilometre ranking 58 in the world, but jumping over to Denmark

It has a population of five million eight hundred six thousand fifteen people ranking one hundred and twelfth in the world

Now this is going to be really interesting comparison because for example Denmark has a much smaller population

But that doesn't mean it's any less of a country even though it has like 7%

Of the amount of population as Germany does but one of the hardest things with this population is to talk about its density

because if we were to talk about Denmark not including Greenland and the Faroe Islands, it has a density of

134 0.76 people per square kilometer

Now moving right along this is where I get into land size

And this is where it gets really interesting because Germany sits at 62nd in the world with approximately

Three hundred fifty seven thousand one hundred and sixty-eight kilometers square and of that its water

Percentage is approximately 2.2 percent Denmark. However is way bigger, especially if we include

Greenland and the Faroe Islands Greenland makes up a huge portion of its land now

Keep in mind a lot of it is uninhabited

So that's where the population density would go down because for land size the Denmark sits at approximately

2.2 million square kilometres ranking cap proximately 12th ish in the world, but keep in mind

It's Greenland that helps contribute to that now

I did say this is going to get really interesting because of the population because for this we're gonna move on to

Economy and it's gonna be really interesting to see how powerful the economy of Denmark is compared to its actual population size

first of all, however

Let's mention money now both countries

do keep in mind the money does fluctuate between the two and

the dollar values that we are gonna give in this video is based off of the time that we actually recorded this video or

Uploaded it now for Germany

they are big contributor to the European Union and they actually

Have adopted the euro and for them when it comes to the conversion in relation to u.s

Dollars 1 USD equals about point 8 8 euros, however, Denmark although a part of the European Union

It does adopt its own currency. And that is the Danish Krone and in relation to u.s. Dollars one US dollar equals approximately

0.63 3 DK case and to go further into understanding the money and the economy of Denmark and Germany

We need to look at the gross domestic product in which for these particular videos

Did we use the purchasing power parity? Because that is the best way to compare nations for the GDP purchasing power. Parity of Germany

It's at approximately four point three seven three trillion dollars ranking fifth in the world and of that

It does have a GDP per capita of 52 thousand eight hundred and one dollars and to understand how some of this gross domestic

Product worked we to look at the imports and exports in which for this video we do get our rates from the OEC

for Germany

They set at third in the world exporting approximately 1.3 two trillion dollars in goods of their total exports

12% of that is made from cars

4.6 percent of that is made from vehicle parts and 4 percent of that is packaged medicaments as well as many other things

For the imports. However, Germany sits at third as well with

937 billion dollars

5.4 percent of that as cars at 2.6 percent of that is computers and 2.6 is also packaged medicaments

Denmark, however is a lot smaller when it comes to what it gives and what it takes from the world because for Denmark the GDP

Purchasing power parity is 299 point one six six billion dollars ranking 50 second in the world

however

that being said it's also a very prosperous country because with its population and the amount of money its

GDP per capita is almost equal to

Germany making it come in at fifty one thousand six hundred and forty three dollars

Ranking 19th in the world and for the exports of Denmark

They sit at eighty four point 1 billion dollars being 37th in the world and of this the top exports are

11% packaged medicaments

3.2 percent of that is pigs and

2.4 percent of that is animal blood or human blood and for Denmark's imports

They come in at eighty four point six billion ranking

35th in the world four point nine percent of that as cars three point four percent of that is packaged medicaments and

2.7 percent of that is refined petroleum. So we've looked at money. We've looked at population

We've looked at land size but one thing that we also really need to look at is the living expenses between these two particular

nations now for me I use expat Assante comm that gives you a

General but not completely accurate idea of the living expenses between two nations

with that in mind if you were to move to Denmark from Germany in Denmark food is

37% more expensive than in Germany housing is also a whopping 39%

more expensive in Denmark clothes are

21% transportation is 10%

Personal care is also 18% higher in Denmark and entertainment is also 29 percent higher in

total if you moved to Denmark from Germany, it would be

27% more expensive to live in that country and to finish it off with economy

Let's take a look at the national debt of these countries because for the national debt of Germany, they sit at two trillion

479 billion

381 million dollars, of course

I fail to mention that we're putting this in the US dollars not in Euros or

In the Danish Krone so we can get a general idea to compare the two with that in mind per citizen

Theoretically owns twenty nine thousand six hundred and four dollars

However, Denmark with its smaller population is a lot smaller with

125 billion five hundred and sixty nine million

Dollars and of that the national debt per citizen sits at twenty two thousand one hundred and eighty seven, so that's economy

Land size all that stuff out of the way. Let's take a look at military because that's important as well

So for Germany because it has a bigger population. It has a manpower of

37 million people of that approximately 29 million five hundred and forty thousand people are fit for service

however

the total personnel of the military forces of Germany sits at two hundred and ten thousand individuals of that there is approximately

180,000 active personnel and approximately 30,000 people in reserve units Denmark

However is much smaller with a manpower of two million

500,000 people and of that two million twenty thousand people are actually fit for service

interesting enough

Although for its size the total personnel sits at approximately 75 thousand

150 people with about twenty thousand eight hundred personnel being active units

however

The interesting part about Denmark is that it has a much higher

Reserve personnel and that comes in at fifty four thousand three hundred and fifty but keep in mind

That number is really high because Denmark still has a mandatory form of conscription now breaking it down

Let's take a look at some of the equipment that Germany and Denmark has for Germany. They have an aircraft strength of

698 of that ninety-two of these are classified as fighters in which they use the typhoon and the tornado as their main fighter craft

of that they also have

169 attack craft and about

345 transport aircraft their helicopter strength sits at

375 and of course of this they have 47 attack helicopters

Denmark on the other hand has an aircraft strength of approximately

113 and of this they have 33 fighters in which their main fighter craft is the f-16 Falcon

Unfortunately for Denmark they do not have any forms of attack aircraft

But their transport aircraft sits at 39 as well their helicopter strength sits at 35

But they don't have any attack aircraft now, although it does seem small. Keep in mind

Both countries are actually part of NATO and they all kind of defend each other

but however for ground forces when it comes to Germany their combat tanks sits at

543 in which they use the leopard 2 tank, of course

They have 5,000 869 armored fighting vehicles and approximately

154 pieces of artillery and 50 rocket projectors for Denmark though. They do have 57 combat tanks of that

They use the leopard 2a5 and for armored fighting vehicles. They actually surprisingly have

673 and their total artillery comes in at 12 and they are not known to have any forms of rocket projectors

But let's jump over to the Navy because it's actually rather interesting these two particular

Countries because for Germany the country does have approximately 81 Navy assets

Of course, they don't have any aircraft carriers, but they have approximately 10 frigates currently

They also don't own any forms of destroyers

But they also have five Corvettes and over six submarines and a lot more patrol craft Denmark

However has over 90 Navy assets zero aircraft carriers nine for it gets zero destroyers

2-0 Corvettes eight submarines and a lot of patrol craft and for both of these countries when it comes to their budget

Germany's budget sits at forty three point seven five seven billion dollars

which is approximately 1.3 percent of the total GDP and although Denmark may only have a budget of

3.8 billion keep in mind it spends a higher percentage of its GDP

Coming in at one point one seven percent, of course

Both countries are well under the recommended two percent that NATO requires

So there you have it guys that is us looking at the two countries of Denmark

And Germany both of these great nations have their own

individual things that make them unique and special and this can either be its traditions and its values or simply just the

landscape in which one enjoys, but other than that guys

my name is Dave WAP on I want to just thank you guys for taking the time to learn about these two particular nations and

Just playing the little game of which country is better. Let me ask you this

Which one do you think is better? And also what do you like about the other country as well?

Let us know down there in the comment section below as always if you're liking this video

Be sure to hit that big like and thumbs up

Of course if it's your first time here and you want to continue learning about different nations

We don't always do which countries are better there just the occasional from time to time stuff

We like to go into actual countries themselves and dive into history and all that sort of jazz

So be sure to tune in if you guys are new here and that's the kind of stuff that you like hit that subscribe button

But in that guise, my name is Dave waffle and I will see you guys in the next one. Okay, cool. Bye

So you've seen this video now the question is do you want to learn more about Denmark or do you want to learn more about

Germany beauty is we have done so many videos around these two particular countries

We've learned about their militaries. We've learned about their cultures. So check out some videos here

Also looking at the description box below and you'll be surprised. Other than that. We'll see you in the next one. Bye

Brad Paisley Gifts Carrie Underwood Bubble Wrap Dress on CMAs Stage After Her 'Really Bad Fall' - 24 - Duration: 4:57.

Carrie Underwood is now healed after a terrifying fall outside her Nashville home a year ago — and poking fun at her tumble

While co-hosting the CMA Awards on Wednesday with Brad Paisley, the "Cry Pretty" singer — who is expecting her second child with husband Mike Fisher — changed into a (very chic!) dress made out of bubble wrap

Already a mom to 3½-year-old son Isaiah Michael, Underwood announced earlier in the night she and Fisher are expecting another boy

"Last year, I don't know if you all heard, but two days after last year's show, she took a really bad fall," said Paisley during a bit

"So tonight that's not gonna happen again — not on my watch! Put this on." Shot back Underwood: "Yeah, I'm not gonna wear this

" Paisley went on to pop several of the bubbles in Underwood's new gown.   Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley Return — for the 11th Year! — to Host the 2018 CMA Awards  Shortly after the CMAs last year, Underwood broke her wrist during the scary fall on her front porch

And in January, the country star revealed that in the same accident, she suffered an injury to her face, which resulted in more than 40 stitches

"When I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different," Underwood wrote in a letter to her fan club in January

After stepping away from the spotlight for nearly six months, the American Idol alum returned to the stage in April at the ACMs for an emotional performance in Las Vegas

Following the accident, Underwood kept a low-profile on social media but slowly revealed more of her face in photos leading up to the award show

During a recent interview with Vulture, the "Before He Cheats" singer opened up about how the accident took a toll on her mentally and physically

"I felt like the differences were more in my head than they were in anybody else's that would listen to the things I was doing

I had wanted to be in the studio sooner than I was, actually recording these songs, but I had stitches inside my mouth, outside my mouth

It was physically impossible," Underwood told the outlet.   Everything Pregnant Carrie Underwood Has Said About Motherhood  "Going into the studio for the first time, it was a mind game: 'Do I sound the same? Is my diction the same? Does my mouth move the same as it did before?" Underwood recounted

"I would sing something and then look at David [Garcia] and be like, 'Did that all come out clearly?' My m's and b's and p's were kind of the issue

And he was like, 'I thought it sounded great,'" the Grammy award winner said of her producer

While it was difficult for Underwood to initially accept that her injury had an effect on her vocals, she's now come to accept it

"Things change just as you get older; muscles change. I kind of expect I'm not always going to sound like I'm 22 coming off of American Idol

Hopefully, I get better," she added.  The 52nd annual CMA Awards air Wednesday, Nov

14 from Nashville at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

My secret English vowel pronunciation trick! - Duration: 12:09.

Buh-clue.

Hi.

Bye.

EST on ABC.

Eldridge & Co.: Gary Bagley: New York Cares - Duration: 26:49.

♪ [THEME MUSIC] ♪

>> HELLO.

I AM RONNIE ELDRIDGE.

WE SHOULD KNOW OUR COUNTRY IS AT

ITS BEST WHEN PEOPLE CARE ABOUT

EACH OTHER, ABOUT THE COMMUNITY

AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE PUBLIC

GOOD.

NEW YORK CARES WAS STARTED IN

1987 TO HELP NEW YORKERS DO JUST

THAT.

GARY BAGLEY HAS MANY THOUGHTS

ABOUT CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, SERVICE,

AND I'M PLEASED HE IS MY GUESTS

TODAY SO WE CAN TALK ABOUT THIS.

>> IT IS GOOD TO BE HERE.

>> TELL ME WHAT NEW YORK

CARES IS.

>> NEW YORK CARES IS THE

CITY'S LARGEST NETWORK OF

VOLUNTEERS.

WE ACTIVELY PUT 65,000

VOLUNTEERS INTO THE COMMUNITY

LAST YEAR, JUST THE FIVE

BOROUGHS.

WE WORK IN EDUCATION.

THAT IS ALMOST HALF OF OUR WORK.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS.

WE DO EVERYTHING FROM TUTORING

PROGRAMS WITH ELEMENTARY

SCHOOLS, PARENT ENGAGEMENT

PROGRAMS, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT.

WE ARE A PROVIDER OF CITIZENSHIP

PREPARATION SERVICES SUPPORTING

OUR NONPROFIT WORKERS.

>> DO YOU MENTOR KIDS?

>> WE ARE THE CITY'S LARGEST

TUITION-FREE SAT PREP PROGRAM.

WE HAVE 400 VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE

BEEN TRAINED TO PREPARE

STUDENTS.

THEY ARE HELPING ABOUT 1100

STUDENTS PREPARE THIS YEAR.

IN PAST YEARS WE'VE HAD SCORE

INCREASES ON AVERAGE AS HIGH AS

200.

>> HOW WELL DO THE CHILDREN

DO?

>> THEY ARE GREAT.

WE REALLY HAVE OVER THE LAST

YEAR AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO

THIS MORE AND MORE INTENTIONALLY

IS FOCUSED ON THOSE STUDENTS WHO

ARE IN MOST NEED OF SERVICES.

THE GAP BETWEEN -- ESPECIALLY IN

COLLEGE, THE KIND OF COLLEGE

THEY MIGHT GO TO, OFTEN IS THE

TEST.

NOT EVERYONE BELIEVES IN TESTING

BUT IT IS STILL THE RIGHT OF

PASSAGE.

ONE OF THE THINGS WE FIND, AND

THIS HAPPENS THROUGHOUT THE

EDUCATIONAL PROCESS IS WE ARE

STARTING NOW IN MOST SCHOOLS

WITH A PROGRAM CALLED SOPHOMORE

SKILLS.

THAT IS BASIC TUTORING TO MAKE

SURE BY JUNIOR YEAR THE STUDENTS

ARE READY TO PREPARE FOR THE

SAT.

IF WE START IN OCTOBER AND NOW

THE TEST IS IN MARCH AND THE

STUDENT IS COMING IN BEHIND

WHERE THEY SHOULD BE IN THE

11TH GRADE, THE HOPE OF GOOD

PERFORMANCE IS DIFFICULT.

WE WANT TO START A LITTLE

EARLIER.

IT BECOMES A QUESTION OF EQUITY.

PARENTS IN THE CITY, IT IS

SEVENTH-GRADE AND THEY ARE

TALKING ABOUT THE SAT AND ABOUT

COLLEGE AND ABOUT TEST FOR

SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS, AND

THEN THERE IS ANOTHER GROUP OF

STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT BE

PREPARING BUT COULD BE CAPABLE

OF GOING TO A SPECIALIZED HIGH

SCHOOL, GOING TO ANY OF A NUMBER

OF COLLEGES, BUT THE ADDED

SUPPORT BY THEIR SCHOOLS THAT

ARE TOO CASH-STRAPPED TO PROVIDE

IT, PARENTS MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN

TO START.

>> DO YOU ALSO DO JUNIOR

HIGH SCHOOLS?

>> WE ARE STARTING TO WORK

WITH JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENTS.

IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT.

ONE PROGRAM WE DON'T HAVE YET

AND WHEN WE ARE GETTING THE MOST

REQUESTS FOR IS PREPARING FOR

THE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOL

TESTS.

THERE IS A HUGE IMBALANCE.

THE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS

WANT TO BE SERVING THE CITY AND

REALLY REFLECT THE POPULATION OF

THE CITY.

THEY ARE AWARE THEY DO NOT.

AGAIN, THERE IS A FAIR AMOUNT OF

THIS THAT IS THE ABILITY TO

PREPARE FOR TESTS.

WE HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY AWARE

OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS

THAT AS DIVERSE CITY AS NEW

YORK CITY IS, OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS

ARE NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED.

THEY ARE NOT AS DIVERSE IN THE

SCHOOL.

LAST WEEK WE HAD OUR BIG DAY OF

SERVICE FOR SCHOOLS CALLED NEW

YORK CARES DAY.

WE HAD 3000 VOLUNTEERS OUT IN

ABOUT 35 PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

THAT IS A DAY WE FOCUS ON

LAUNCHING A YEAR OF EDUCATION

PROGRAMS.

WE WERE GARDENING, PAINTING

MURALS, GETTING VOLUNTEERS INTO

THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND HOPING

TO HOOK THEM SO THEY UNDERSTAND

WHAT THE ENVIRONMENTS ARE LIKE.

>> IF I HEARD THAT YOU WERE

GOING TO PAINT SOME CLASSROOMS

IN A SCHOOL ON MY CORNER.

CAN I JOIN IN THE EFFORT THAT

DAY?

>> WE DO ASK YOU TO SIGN UP

EARLY.

THERE IS A BIT OF A PROCESS.

WE WERE FOUNDED TO MAKE IT AS

EASY AS POSSIBLE.

THERE IS A MOMENT WHERE MOST

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES THAT

DISAPPOINT US, IT IS EITHER

THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE, TOO

FEW PEOPLE, THE SUPPLIES WERE

NOT THERE.

THERE ARE A LOT OF LOGISTICAL

CONCERNS.

WE HAVE TRIED TO EXPLAIN IF

WE ARE PLANNING AN EVENT FOR 50

PEOPLE, IT NEEDS 50 PEOPLE.

THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO

DO, ALSO FOR OUR PARTNERS.

IF WE DO GET DROPPED BYs, WE

SIGN THEM UP FOR NEXT WEEKEND.

STARTING WITH NEW YORK CARES,

FOR ANYBODY WHO DOES NOT KNOW,

IT IS EASY.

A VOLUNTEER GOES TO ONE

ONE-HOUR ORIENTATION.

ABOUT A THIRD OF OUR

ORIENTATIONS ARE OFFERED

THROUGH DIGITAL.

WHETHER YOU CAN COME TO OUR

OFFICES, SIT IN ON A WEBINAR,

AFTER THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO

ALMOST 1700 PROJECTS HAPPENING

ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS EVERY

MONTH.

EVERY MONTH AROUND 11,000 PEOPLE

GET OFF THE COUCH OR UP FROM

BEHIND THEIR DESKS, SHOW UP

SOMEWHERE IN THE FIVE BOROUGHS

TO HELP.

WHETHER YOU NEED CURRICULUM FOR

CITIZENSHIP PROGRAMS, GLITTER

FOR YOUR ART ACTIVITIES, SNACKS

FOR YOUR ACTIVITIES PROGRAM,

WE SUPPLY ALL OF THAT.

THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS AS A

VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION SOMEBODY

WILL SAY, WHY DOES THIS COST

ANYTHING?

THE MOMENT THE VOLUNTEER GIVES

BACK IS DONE FREE.

THE PREPARATION OF MAKING SURE

THE NONPROFIT OR PUBLIC SCHOOL

IS READY, THAT WE DIAGNOSE THEIR

NEEDS, ORDER SUPPLIES FOR

THEIR CURRICULUM, IT IS A LOT.

>> IT IS A 21ST CENTURY

OPERATION.

WHAT OTHER MAJOR AREAS?

>> THE OTHER MAJOR AREAS ARE

IMMEDIATE NEEDS.

HUNGER PROGRAMMING, WORKING AT

FOOD PANTRIES AND

SOUP KITCHENS, AND VISITING

SENIORS WHICH IS ONE OF THE

BIGGEST GROWING PROGRAMS WE

HAVE.

POVERTY AMONGST SENIOR CITIZENS

IS GROWING.

ON TOP OF IT THERE IS A LOT OF

LANGUAGE ISSUES,

FOR ACCESS TO BENEFITS.

THIS YEAR WE ARE EXCITED.

WE WILL PILOT A PROGRAM.

WE JUST GOT A GRANT WE ARE

THRILLED AT WHERE WE WILL BE

WORKING TO BRING BILINGUAL

VOLUNTEERS INTO SENIOR

CENTERS, HOPING TO BRING MORE

SENIORS INTO THE CENTER WHO

MIGHT HAVE FELT A LACK OF

LANGUAGE, THE ABILITY TO SPEAK

THE LANGUAGE WAS A BARRIER.

WE HAVE THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS

WHO ARE BILINGUAL AND EAGER TO

PUT THAT SKILL TO USE.

WE ALL WANT TO BE USEFUL.

THE LAST BIT OF OUR WORK, WHICH

IS PROBABLY WHAT PEOPLE

WOULD THINK OF US FIRST IS WHAT

WE CALL PUBLIC SPACES.

THAT IS THE PAINTING, THE

GARDENING.

WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF VOLUNTEERS,

THEY THINK OF PAINT AND RAKES.

THAT IS JUST UNDER 10% OF THE

WORK.

THE BULK OF THE WORK IS

EDUCATION AND IMMEDIATE NEEDS.

THE THING WE ARE KNOWN FOR IS

THE ANNUAL COAT DRIVE.

>> WE'LL COME BACK TO THAT

IN A MINUTE.

THE UNDERLINE BASIS IS REALLY,

IT WAS FORMED BY --

>> VOLUNTEERS.

>> WHAT KIND OF VOLUNTEERS?

>> WE WERE FOUNDED BY A GROUP

OF FRIENDS WHO ARE UNABLE TO

VOLUNTEER FOR A COUPLE OF

REASONS.

AND THEY WERE EMPLOYED.

THEY WERE TWENTYSOMETHINGS,

STARTING THEIR CAREERS.

THEIR CAREERS EITHER DID NOT

PERMIT THEM TO GO OUT DURING THE

DAY OR TO MAKE SOME OF THE KIND

OF COMMITMENT LEVELS THEY WERE

BEING ASKED AND THEY KNEW THEY

CANNOT MAKE IN GOOD CONSCIENCE.

THE OTHER SIDE OF IT WAS

HOMELESS SHELTERS.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS DID NOT HAVE

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS.

ANY TIME THEY DID TRY TO

HAVE A VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE,

THEY WERE OFTEN DISAPPOINTED.

THEY FOUND "NEW YORK CARES."

THEY TRIED TO FIGURE IT OUT FOR

A COUPLE OF YEARS AND FINALLY

ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF OUR GROUP

SAID THERE SHOULD BE AN

ORGANIZATION.

PEOPLE ASK WHAT WE DO.

EVERYTHING THAT IS HARD ABOUT

VOLUNTEERING, THAT IS WHAT WE

ARE DOING AT THE OFFICE.

>> DO THEY STILL COME

AROUND?

>> ONE OF THE FOUNDERS IS

STILL ON THE BOARD,

JEANNE STRAUS.

SHE REMAINS COMMITTED.

YOU WOULD THINK SHE JOINED THE

BOARD LAST YEAR.

SHE HAS THAT ENERGY AND VIGOR.

>> SHE COMES FROM A FAMILY

THAT WAS ALWAYS VERY COMMUNITY

EVERYTHING INVOLVED.

DO YOU FIND A LOT OF YOUR

VOLUNTEERS COME FROM THAT KIND

OF FAMILY?

>> FOLKS ARE MOTIVATED IN A

VARIETY OF WAYS.

>> DO THEY REALIZE THEY

HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY?

I GREW UP BELIEVING I HAD A

RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTRIBUTE.

>> WE STILL SEE THAT.

WE HAVE PERIODICALLY SURVEY

VOLUNTEERS ABOUT

WHY THEY STARTED.

WHY DID YOU CONTINUE?

FOR THOSE THAT ARE LESS ACTIVE,

WHY DID IT DROP OFF?

WHEN THE MOTIVATION IS THE

HIGHER PURPOSE -- THE NUMBER ONE

RESPONSE FOR US IS MAKING NEW

YORK CITY A BETTER PLACE

TO LIVE.

FOLKS ATTACH IT TO THE CITY, A

SENSE OF IMPROVING THE CITY.

THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE REASON

FOLKS CONTINUE TO DO THAT.

>> DOES THAT MEAN THEY FACE

INJUSTICES YOU HAVE TALKED ABOUT

BEFORE?

>> FOLKS ARE MORE AWARE OF

POLITICAL ISSUES, SOCIALLY

AWARE.

ABOUT TWO THIRDS OF OUR

VOLUNTEERS ARE BETWEEN 18 AND

34.

OUR MODEL APPEALS TO THE YOUNG

NEW YORKER WHO IS LOOKING FOR

ACCESS BUT DON'T HAVE ALL THE

DAY TO LOOK FOR THE VOLUNTEER

PROGRAM.

NEW YORK CARES IS TAKING CARE OF

-- THERE IS GOOD CONTENT AND

EXPERIENCES FOR YOU TO ACCESS

AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND FIVE

HOURS FIGURING IT OUT.

WE SPEND THAT FIVE HOURS.

INCREASINGLY, THE MILLENNIAL

GENERATION THAT A LOT OF FOLKS

HAVE TALKED SO MUCH ABOUT, ONE

OF THE WONDERFUL ASPECTS IS

THERE IS A DESIRE NOT ONLY TO DO

SERVICE BUT TO LEARN FROM THAT

EXPERIENCE.

WE ARE LOOKING AT WAYS WE CAN

REALLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT

OPPORTUNITY.

20 YEARS AGO, WE WOULD'VE LOVED

TO EDUCATE YOU ON ISSUES BUT A

LOT OF FOLKS WOULD LIKE LET ME

GO AND DO MY THING AND THEN I

WILL GO HOME.

NOW FOLKS ARE READING THINGS

IN THE PAPER,

SEEING THINGS ON TWITTER,

INSTAGRAM, EVERYWHERE.

VOLUNTEERISM IS A WAY FOR US

EACH TO MAKE MEANINGFUL CHANGE

THAT WE CAN GRASP IN WHAT IS A

HUGE ENVIRONMENT WE ARE BEING

BOMBARDED WITH EVERY DAY.

ONE QUICK EXAMPLE.

AFTER THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL

ELECTION WE SAW OVER A 200%

INCREASE IN FOLKS SIGNING UP TO

BE ORIENTED, TO GET OUT AND

VOLUNTEER.

INTERESTINGLY WE DO SEE AN

UPTICK AFTER EVERY ELECTION.

TO YOUR POINT EARLIER, THERE IS

A MOMENT WHEN WE VOTE,

WHERE WE SORT OF GO, OH,

I CLICKED THAT ONE LITTLE LEVER.

IF THE ELECTION DOES NOT GO MY

WAY, HOW ELSE DO I LIVE MY

VALUES AND VOLUNTEERISM -- THERE

IS A GREATER GOOD.

I CAN EXPRESS MY VALUES AND LIVE

THEM EVERYDAY IN THE WAY I HELP

OTHERS.

>> THAT WAS A VERY

IMPORTANT TURNING POINT IN THE

EARLY STAGES OF THE WOMEN'S

MOVEMENT.

A LOT OF WOMEN WERE SUPERB

VOLUNTEERS.

THEY GATHERED INCREDIBLE

EXPERIENCES.

WHEN IT CAME TO WRITING A

RESUME, THEY WERE RELUCTANT TO

APPRECIATE THE IMPORTANCE

OF THEIR EXPERIENCE.

>> ONE THING I TELL PEOPLE IS

OCCASIONALLY I GET A CALL FROM

SOMEBODY I KNOW AT A COMPANY.

THEY MIGHT BE A SPONSOR AND THEY

SAY, DO YOU KNOW SO-AND-SO?

I WILL LOOK UP IN OUR DATABASE

BECAUSE I'M ASHAMED I DON'T KNOW

ALL 65,000 PEOPLE BY NAME.

A LITTLE SHORTCOMING, BUT PEOPLE

ARE PUTTING ON THE RESUMES THEY

ARE A VOLUNTEER TEAM LEADER.

WE HAVE LEADERSHIP

OPPORTUNITIES.

ONE OTHER WAY WE ENABLE THE

NONPROFITS TO HAVE OUR PROGRAMS

IS EACH OF THEM IS LED BY A

VOLUNTEER TEAM LEADER.

THAT IS A PERSON WHO IS AN

UNPAID VOLUNTEER.

THEY GO THROUGH ADDITIONAL

TRAINING WITH US AND WE PROVIDE

ONGOING TRAINING ON HOW TO LEAD

OTHERS IN VOLUNTEERING, MANAGE

PROJECTS, WORKING WITH CHILDREN,

ETC.

THESE FOLKS OUT OF THE GOODNESS

OF THEIR HEARTS SHOW UP AT THE

SCHOOL, THEY ARE COORDINATING

WITH THE TEACHER, THE PRINCIPAL,

COORDINATING BACK TO US.

WE GET DATA ON THE NUMBER OF

VOLUNTEERS, THE NUMBER OF KIDS

ALL COMING OUT OF THEIR PHONES.

THEY ARE WILLING TO ORGANIZE

OTHERS.

THOSE 1300 PEOPLE WE HAVE, AT

THE END OF THE DAY THEY MOBILIZE

ANOTHER 25,000 PEOPLE.

>> YOU CAN'T LOBBY?

>> WE ARE A 501(C)(3).

WE ARE LIMITED IN THE LEVEL OF

LOBBYING WE CAN DO.

>> DO ANY OF YOUR PEOPLE

WANT TO BEGIN TO LOBBY?

>> I THINK THERE ARE TWO

ROUTES THAT HAPPENED FOR

VOLUNTEERS AND OUR STAFF AND ME

PERSONALLY.

SOME ARE DRAWN BY THE SOCIAL

SERVICES ASPECT.

THEY GO DEEPER INTO IT.

WE HAVE STORIES OF AN ACCOUNTANT

BECOMING A SCHOOLTEACHER.

THOSE ARE INCREDIBLY MEANINGFUL.

ONE THING I AM ALWAYS FASCINATED

BY IS WHEN I AM OUT AND I'M

MEETING WITH THE CITY COUNCIL

MEMBERS AND THEIR STAFF OR IF

I'M UP IN ALBANY DOING THE SAME

WITH OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS, I'M

ALWAYS AMAZED HOW MANY PEOPLE

SAY I ALREADY VOLUNTEER FOR YOU.

>> WHAT DO YOU ASK WHEN YOU GO

TO SEE THESE PEOPLE?

>> THERE ARE A COUPLE OF

THINGS IMPORTANT TO NEW YORK

CARES.

ONE OF THE REASONS WE WERE

FUNDED IS THE INVESTMENT IN A

VOLUNTEER INFRASTRUCTURE IS SO

SMALL.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT ESTIMATES

BUT WELL OVER HALF OF THE

WORKFORCE FOR NONPROFITS IS

VOLUNTARY.

THERE IS SO LITTLE MONEY FOR

HUMAN RESOURCES PERIOD IN THE

NONPROFIT SECTOR, AND VOLUNTEER

MANAGEMENT IS ALL BUT IGNORED,

IN BIG POLICY QUESTIONS.

>> YOU'RE UNDER SCRUTINY.

PEOPLE WANT TO GIVE -- THEY

LOOK HOW MUCH THE OVERHEAD IS.

>> EXACTLY.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT EXISTS,

THE CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND

COMMUNITY SERVICE IN WASHINGTON,

THERE ARE STATE COMMISSIONS AS

PART OF THE FOUNDING LEGISLATION

BACK IN THE CLINTON ERA.

THERE ARE STATE COMMISSIONS AND

THE NEW YORK STATE COMMISSION

CAN SUPPORT PROGRAMS LIKE

AMERICORPS, WHERE --

>> AND YOU ARE CONNECTED

WITH THEM?

>> WE BOTH USE AMERICORPS

MEMBERS AND ON THE STATE

COMMISSION.

HERE IN NEW YORK CITY WE HAVE

THE NYC SERVICE, WHICH WAS

STARTED IN THE BLOOMBERG

ADMINISTRATION AND CONTINUES

INTO THIS ADMINISTRATION.

THEIR CHIEF SERVICE OFFICER

PROMOTES VOLUNTEERISM.

BUT THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT

GOES INTO THOSE TWO AREAS PALES

IN COMPARISON TO JUST ABOUT ANY

OTHER WORK HAPPENING.

>> YOU WERE DEPENDENT NOT

ONLY ON GRANTS BUT ON THE

CONTRACTS?

>> OUR ACTUAL GOVERNMENT

CONTRACTS ARE VERY SMALL.

THE ONES WE DO HAVE -- THE THINK

I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT IS WE

TRAIN NONPROFITS IN HOW TO

MANAGE THEIR VOLUNTEERS.

BOTH AT THE CITY AND STATE

LEVEL, AND EVEN IN EMERGENCY

MANAGEMENT THERE IS THE

RECOGNITION THAT THE SKILLS AND

THE MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE WE

BRING IS UNIQUE IN THE SECTOR.

THERE ARE A FEW THINGS WE ALWAYS

HAVE TO ADVOCATE FOR.

THE COST OF RUNNING A BACKGROUND

CHECK IN OUR CITY IS OVER $100.

WE CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND

EVERYBODY WOULD LIKE EVERY

VOLUNTEER TO BE BACKGROUND

CHECKED.

I'M NOT SURE THAT IS THE SAFEST

THING ANYBODY CAN DO.

ONE OF THE REASONS WE EMPLOY A

GROUP-BASED MODEL IS I BELIEVE

IT IS SAFER.

A GROUP IS BETTER THAN

INDIVIDUALS IN ONE-ON-ONE.

TO BE ABLE TO MAKE VOLUNTEERISM

MORE AFFORDABLE -- HALF OF THE

ORGANIZATIONS WE WORK WITH HAVE

LESS THAN $1 MILLION BUDGETS, OR

THEY ARE A PUBLIC SCHOOL.

THEY DON'T HAVE $20,000

TO BACKGROUND CHECK THE PEOPLE

WHO WILL BE COMING INTO THEIR

ORGANIZATION AND BE THEIR

CHILDREN.

THERE ARE COSTS AND THEN THERE

IS THE INVESTMENT INTO VOLUNTEER

MANAGEMENT INFRASTRUCTURE.

>> LET'S TALK ABOUT THE

WINTER COMING AND THE COATS.

IT IS A MAJOR PROJECT.

>> MAJOR, AND A MAJOR

MILESTONE.

WE'RE CELEBRATING THE 30TH

ANNIVERSARY OF THE COAT DRIVE.

I WAS NOT THERE FOR IT BUT IT

REALLY CHANGED THE FACE OF HOW

PEOPLE SAW WINTER IN NEW YORK

CITY.

FOR FOLKS WHO LIVE IN NEW YORK,

THERE IS AN ICONIC IMAGE OF THE

SHIVERING STATUE OF LIBERTY THAT

PEOPLE WILL SEE THROUGH THE END

OF THE YEAR.

A YOUNG UPSTART NONPROFIT WAS

APPROACHED BY A WOMAN NAMED

SUZANNE DAVIS WHO HEARD ABOUT A

SIMILAR COAT DRIVE IN DENVER.

YOU TALK ABOUT COMMUNITY

ORGANIZING, SHE WAS TALKING TO

HER FRIEND MARY.

SHE SAID IT'S SUCH A GREAT IDEA

BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO

WITH IT.

MARY SAID I HEARD ABOUT YOUNG

PEOPLE CALLED NEW YORK CARES AND

THEY WANT TO HELP.

THEY PROBABLY HAVE THE ENERGY

FOR THIS, OR SOMETHING TO THAT

EFFECT.

THE YOUNG -- OUR FIRST FULL-TIME

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, KENNETH

ADAMS, WHO IS IN THE CUNY SYSTEM

NOW, A GREAT GUY, WORKED WITH

THE BOARD AND TOOK IT ON.

>> HOW MANY COATS DID YOU

DISTRIBUTE LAST YEAR?

>> LAST YEAR WE GOT TO

105,000.

THIS YEAR WE ARE KICKING OFF THE

DRIVE WITH THE DISTRIBUTION OF

TWO MILLION COAT.

ONE OF THE SMARTEST MOVES THAT

WAS MADE EARLY ON AND THIS

CONTINUES TO BE THE CASE IS ONE

OF OUR STRONGEST PARTNERS IS THE

NYPD.

A NEW YORKER CAN WALK INTO ANY

POLICE PRECINCT IN THE FIVE

BOROUGHS THROUGH DECEMBER 31, 24

HOURS A DAY AND DROP OFF A COAT.

WE ORGANIZE TO PICK UP THERE.

WE ARE STILL COLLECTING DURING

MORNING RUSH AT GRAND CENTRAL

AND PENN STATION.

AT NEW YORK CARES WE HAVE A MAP.

WE HAVE MANY COLLECTION SITES

ACROSS THE CITY.

YOU TALK ABOUT CIVIC LIFE--

>> YOU LOOK AT IT ONLINE

AND FIND IT?

>> YOU CAN FIND THE LOCATION

NEAREST YOU WITH THE MAPPING

FUNCTION.

THE OTHER THING THAT IS

FASCINATING TO ME IS ABOUT 1300

FOLKS STEP UP AND RUN A COAT

DRIVE AT THEIR OFFICE, THEIR

APARTMENT BUILDING, AT THEIR

SCHOOL, GIRL SCOUT TROOP, BOY

SCOUTS --

IT'S AMAZING TO SEE.

>> IF THEY GET A LOT OF

COATS?

>> WE HAVE A WAREHOUSE THAT

IS DONATED TO US ON 31ST AND

7TH.

GROUPS CAN DROP THEM OFF.

WE HAVE DROP-OFF HOURS.

WE RUN UP TO THE STREET AND MEET

YOU BECAUSE WE KNOW IT IS NOT

EASY TO STOP AT 31ST AND 7TH AND

DROP YOUR COATS OFF.

>> OR YOU CAN TAKE THEM TO

A MAJOR DISTRIBUTOR?

>> OR YOU CAN TAKE THEM TO

ONE OF THE MAJOR SITES.

>> WHO GETS THE COATS?

>> LAST YEAR WE HAD 600

ORGANIZATIONS APPLY TO GET

COATS.

>> YOU DISTRIBUTE THEM

THROUGH THE ORGANIZATION?

>> YES.

WHEN THEY COME TO THE WAREHOUSE,

VOLUNTEERS SORT THEM.

BAGS OF FIVE.

THAT IS IN MIDTOWN.

WE HAVE VOLUNTEERS THERE

8-10 HOURS A DAY, SORTING.

THEN ORGANIZATIONS HAVE APPLIED

TO GET THE COATS.

BASICALLY IT IS

FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED.

>> AND THEY COME TO 31ST STREET?

I'M CONFUSED BECAUSE I WAS

LOOKING FOR JOBS ON YOUR

WEBSITE AND I THOUGHT THE

WAREHOUSE WAS IN THE BRONX.

>> THE WAREHOUSE IS HERE.

ONE THING WE DO IS -- THAT'S OK.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE A JOB AT THE

WAREHOUSE, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO

CALL.

WE HAVE TO BRING YOU IN FOR AN

INTERVIEW.

WE HAVE A WAREHOUSE THAT IS PART

OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

ONE OF THE THINGS WE ARE LOOKING

THIS YEAR THERE ARE TWO

THINGS WE ARE LOOKING TO

PUSH THIS COAT NUMBER HIGHER.

WE ARE PROUD OF 100,000 COATS --

>> IT WOULD BE NICE IF

MOVIE THEATERS AND BROADWAY

COLLECTED.

>> WE HAVE CASTS FROM

BROADWAY SHOWS THAT WILL DO

COLLECTIONS.

ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT

NEW YORK CARES IS IF YOU GO TO

OUR WEBSITE, PLUGGING IN AND

SAYING I WOULD LIKE TO START A

COAT COLLECTION IN MY APARTMENT

BUILDING, WE MAKE IT VERY EASY.

MATERIALS, ALL THE INFORMATION

YOU NEED.

AT OUR GALA LAST NIGHT WE

WERE ABLE TO CELEBRATE TWO

YOUNG, YOUNG PEOPLE WHO TOOK ON

AN INITIATIVE TO COLLECT COATS

THREE YEARS RUNNING AT THEIR

SCHOOLS AND COLLECTED HUNDREDS

OF COATS.

ONE OTHER THING I WOULD LIKE TO

MAKE SURE FOLKS KNOW ABOUT --

ONE THING WE'RE DOING IS CALLED

CASH FOR COATS.

IF YOU TEXT "COAT" TO 41444

YOU'LL GET A LINK AND JUST $20

PUTS A BRAND-NEW COAT

ON THE BACK OF A NEW YORKER

WHO NEEDS IT.

LAST YEAR, 35,000 WERE BRAND-NEW

COATS THEY CAME THROUGH

DONATIONS.

>> IF I HOLD MY CHILDREN'S

CLOTHES BECAUSE IT IS

SENTIMENTAL, YOU REALLY THINK IT

IS TIME TO GIVE THOSE AWAY AND

MAKE THEM USEFUL,

YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN

YOU'RE GIVING IT IF YOU KNOW IT

IS GOING TO SOMEBODY WHO NEEDS

IT.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

WE'RE WORKING WITH ANOTHER GREAT

ORGANIZATION CALLED HELP--

SOME OF THE CLOTHING BINS AT

MALLS, THE PARKING LOTS, THEY GO

AROUND AND COLLECT THEM AND

FIGURE OUT HOW TO REPURPOSE

THEM BEST.

SOME MIGHT GO TO

THE THRIFT SHOPS.

THERE IS A PARTNERSHIP THIS YEAR

WE'RE WORKING WITH THEM, AND

THEY WILL DELIVER AN ADDITIONAL

30,000 COATS, ESPECIALLY TO KIDS

IN THE CITY.

WE ARE ABLE TO DO THAT EVEN FOR

A FRACTION OF A $20 FOR A

BRAND-NEW COAT.

LOTS OF WAYS WE CAN PUSH THIS

HIGHER.

>> WE HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO

Day 12-13 vlog - Duration: 8:26.

And it's Tuesday! Again. 13th day of NaNoWriMo. Just finished my morning

sprint, such as it was: 657 words. Fair bit of world-building, so it was okay. The

more interesting thing was the slight panic attack when I did my word count check

and it looked like I had lost about a thousand words. In fact, it looked like I

had less words than I started with yesterday, and yet when I looked at the

stuff I had written yesterday, it was all there.

Apparently Scrivener had shut down strangely. What I did to try to figure

out where the words might have gotten lost from, because of course I didn't do

a back up yesterday - why would I do a back up yesterday - I went through scene

by scene by scene, copied everything, pasted it into a Word document, and came

up with a different number which was a lot more like what I was expecting. And

then, when I went back to Scrivener and rechecked the word count again, now it

matched. I can only think that some of the scenes hadn't entirely rendered. That

word probably doesn't make sense in this context. I'm thinking of the way when

you're playing Minecraft, and probably other video games, only certain parts

that you're actively in render to a certain distance, and to be able to see

beyond that you have to run your character around to all the places, and

then once it's all rendered now you can see further. I feel like that's kind of

what I did going scene by scene. So in case that happens to you and you think

Scrivener is telling you you lost a bunch of words and yet the words all

seem to be there, try going through each of your little...

whether you have it by scene, by chapter, by whatever... and see if that brings the

words back into active memory for the computer or for the program. It's my

little tip for the day. I had something completely different I was going to talk

about but maybe I'll do that later. But right now I gotta get to work.

I have so many things I want to talk about today, and I don't want to make this get

ridiculously long, so I may end up chopping this up. So if you see me in the

same outfit over the next couple days, that doesn't mean I wore the same thing

every single day. It means I recorded a whole mess of stuff today and just

chopped it up so that the days would not be... so today's would not be too long.

Not what I was going to start with, but I... I am now going to start with talking

about my word count tracker, which is coming along nicely. It's getting

there. For... it is definitely where it should be right now.

Heidi over at Listen I Have an Idea, who

I will link below directly to today's video, really liked this layout and took

it to a whole different level, made it her own and made it into a wall type

tracker. That is really awesome! You should go check it out. If you are

looking for some way to add a little creative touch to your word count

tracking to help get you through the middle of NaNoWriMo, maybe this will help

maybe hers'll help. Maybe between the two you'll get a completely different idea

that is much more you and run with it, in which case, please do share it because

I'd love to see it! I can't take full credit for this design I... and I thought I

knew what who I had gotten the ideas from when I initially posted about it, I

want to say during Camp NaNoWriMo, one of the camps last year. I had seen somebody

who did a leaf tracker and somebody had done sort of the stepping-stones

tracke,r although there's were, I think, rectangular, and I combined them because

I liked them both. The way I've been using it is... I actually didn't... the days

are blank other than their date until I get to them, and then I'll put how many

words I did that day. So yesterday I did 1212 words which brought my total to

26,403 words. So there's how much I got done that day and

then what my daily total is. Which is not entirely necessary, because there is the

tracking right on the NaNoWriMo website, which I also fill in

obsessively. Wrote five more words? Gotta update. Maybe not quite that bad.

But I do like having something that will still be with me after NaNo is over and that I

can look back on what I'm doing future projects that might not be part

of either NaNoWriMo or Camp NaNoWriMo, cuz I'm not sure you have access to the

NaNoWriMo website outside of November. Maybe. I didn't try after last year, and I

switched usernames, so there's no continuity between the two years anyway.

So that's how mine works, and go check out Heidi's to see the one that she set

up. Again, if this gives you an idea for something yet again different, go for it!

So the nighttime sprint got me about where I need to be. Still a little ahead,

my original goal having been 2,000 words a day, 28,000 words is where I should be

on the 14th, so finishing up there in the 13th, not so bad. That does still mean

I've eaten up a good bit of the cushion that I had been creating, cuz that was

meant to be for Thanksgiving... next week. But I'm not gonna worry about that,

because Emily, who I will link below, made a great point today that... Really, yes, we

have this goal and it is fun to race each other and to do various different

challenges for ourselves to try to reach this 50,000 words in 30 days, yes, but

ultimately what we really want is a daily writing habit. That... I'm doing that.

Even days I've been really low in words, I still am managing to write daily, so

I'm gonna take that as a win, and I'm gonna offer that to you too.

Even if you haven't managed to write every day, consider writing just

something. A word or two so you can update that word count and see this

inching up just a little bit. You can even borrow my two favorite words: and so.

There you go. And so dot-dot-dot. Add two words to your word count if you have a

really indecisive character, you can do that a couple days in a row. "And so... and

so... and so..." 'Cause, again, apparently those are like the best words ever. Have a good one!
