Intonation in Long Sentences - English Pronunciation with JenniferESL - Duration: 11:14.
In this lesson, we'll focus on intonation patterns within longer sentences.
Like the one I just said about boots.

My model sentences are getting longer now,
so I'm using thought groups or intonation groups.
Remember what those are?
Sometimes our sentences begin with a longer thought.
It could be a phrase or a whole clause (with a subject and a verb).
We can use low-rise intonation to signal that we're not done yet.
There's more information that we'd like to add.
There's more than one intonation pattern we can use in longer sentences.
- Either in that first thought group or a middle thought group.
So I'll share a second.
It involves dropping our voice and then rising again.
Some call it a fall-rise intonation pattern.
We can use this fall-rise in many of the same places as the low-rise.
You try. Let's practice the fall-rise intonation pattern.
Repeat after me.
So what's the difference between the low-rise and and the fall-rise?
I don't believe there's a significant difference.
Both patterns end with a rise, and that signals incompletion.
You're not done with your thought.
There's more coming.
Here's where I think there could be a difference.
Stating lists.
Listen and compare.
I have one pair of sneakers,
a few pairs of boots,
two pairs of sandals,
and...several pairs of dress shoes.

When I used low-rise intonation the first time,
I needed time to think.
My statement sounded more hesitant, less certain.
The second time I used fall-rise intonation.
It sounded more certain.
Perhaps even more authoritative.
See if you can understand the difference when I count.
First, I'll use a low-rise.
1...2...3...4...5.
Now I'll try a fall-rise.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Sounds more certain.
I can make it even more certain and perhaps authoritative if I use that "angry parent" voice.
1, 2, 3, 4...
Do you see how the meaning...and the expression changes?
We can even put these two intonation patterns together in the same sentence.
I did this at the beginning of the video when I said,
...and then I add on.
We might also use a fall-rise when we need to pause because we're hesitating to add on.
To finish our thought.
We know what we're going to say, but perhaps what we're going to say is surprising or disappointing in some way.
You'll hear statements like,
You could try, but it may not work.
They're good, but expensive.
Let's put everything together.
We'll read a short text.
I'll mark the thought groups,
show the focus words,
and also show where we rise and fall.

Today I will be using Nars sheer glow foundation
did my skin get darker?
all the foundation I've been using look a bit lighter on my skin now....
this foundation is very sheer and light
and provides enough coverage. one of my fav foundations
I think I bought this from ticket monster
it's called Grease paint
pink concealer
it's used a lot when the makeup shops do makeup for brides.
because it brightens up the skin tone and give the face lovely pink tone
I think the color is really pretty
this pink shade really brightens up the skin tone
but you have to be careful when you apply.
the texture is really thick, you have to apply really tiny amount of the product
you see this pink beam?
if you apply too much, the base makeup look really thick! be careful!
it's a good concealer to use before applying lighter shade of blushes especially when you have darker skin tone
honestly I haven't use it for a while...
but I wanted to show you this product in the video anyways because a lot of people rave about this product online
Next I'm setting the foundation with laura mercier mineral finishing powder
for contouring, I'm using kevin aucoin the sculpting powder I bought in Hong Kong
apply it to the outer part of forehead
and sides of nose
why did I put so much shading powder on the sides of nose today lol
I'm taking a clean brush
and blend it out
I really like applying contouring powder here
it really makes a huge difference

it's a light orange brown contouring shade
I like using this shade as a base contouring color
this product is actually a blush
but it looks pretty as an eyeshadow
someone left comment saying this product look really pretty as a blush
but I haven't used it as a blush lol
next I'm taking laura mercier #Guava
I'm applying it on the center of my eyelids very lightly
this is a spring collection eyeshadow palette from Dior
I'm gonna use this shade as a eyeliner
it's a reddish brown
I'm using this eyeliner brush and line my eyes
line the eyes using a shadow and then line the waterline using a liquid liner
I think that makes my eyes look larger
the way I do my eye makeup has changed right?
I think thick eyelines make my eyes look small

it was Aritaum shine fix eyes #moonlight gold
apply this on the bottom lids
If you want moreee glitters
add more glitters
this diamond powder glitter pigments are larger than shine fix eyes
because diamond powder has so much fallouts, I am gonna wet the brush with a fixer
and take the powder
If you wanna accentuate the lower lid fat
use a contouring powder
and add the shadow right underneath of lower lid fat
Oh yea.. I also used this shadow last time..

it's a orange gold glitter shadow
I'm apply it to the outer V
and connect it with the gold pigments
add some on the upper lids too
you know when you do makeup, you just grab what you see in front of you and use it for the makeup
now I'm taking the lightest color on the palette
apply it on the brow bone
and inner corners
instead of thick eyelines,
I'm gonna use false eyelashes!
this is my first time using this lashes,
looked pretty so I bought this
it's called #dolly eye
now I have fake lashes on
while the glue is dried..
I wanna add more blush hehe

WE RIGHTFULLY CRITICIZE
HIM FOR DOING THAT AND HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO REFLECT ON HIS
MISTAKES AND TAKE
RESPONSIBILITY.

AM ON THURSDAY, THE CHEYENNE RIVER SUE TRIBE ONE OF THE
TWO TRIBES THAT HAVE BEEN CHALLENGING THE PIPELINING
COURT SINCE LAST YEAR ASKED A JUDGE TO INTERVENE.
THE TRIBE IS ARGUING THAT THE ARMY CORPS FAILED TO CONSIDER
THE SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT OF THIS PROJECT ON TRIBAL MEMBERS FREE
EXERCISE OF THEIR RELIGION SINCE IT WOULD BE BUILT THROUGH A
SITE THEY BELIEVE IS SACRED.
THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT SACRED BURIAL GROUNDS.
THEY ARE ALSO VERY MUCH CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR
DRINKING WATER AND I THINK THOSE ARE LEGITIMATE CONCERNS.
WHAT THEY'RE ASKING IN THIS CASE IS THAT THE JUDGE AT LEAST
TEMPORARILY HALT THE CONSTRUCTION TO ENSURE THAT
A PROPER REVIEW IS DONE AND WE WILL SEE HOW IT GOES.
A LAWYER FOR THE DAKOTA ACCESS LLC TOLD THE JUDGE THAT
WOULD TAKE ABOUT 60
DAYS TO FINISH BUILDING THE PIPELINE ONCE CONSTRUCTION
RESUMES, AND ABOUT 80 DAYS UNTIL OIL IS FLOWING THROUGH IT.
OBVIOUSLY, THIS WILL HAPPEN VERY QUICKLY AND THE NATIVE AMERICANS
IN THIS CASE HAVE A LEGITIMATE CONCERN THAT IF THEY DON'T AT
LEAST TEMPORARILY HALT CONSTRUCTION, THEY MIGHT JUST
CONSTRUCT EVERYTHING INTO THE DAMAGE BEFORE THE LAWSUIT
IS HEARD AND DECIDED THAT
THEY SHOULD HAVE THAT FEAR BECAUSE I AM SURE THAT THE
COMPANY HAS BEEN READY TO JUST DO IT AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
IT PROBABLY BODES WELL FOR ITS SAFETY IN THE FUTURE.
I WOULDN'T BE SUPPRESSED THEY DID THAT I THINK IT IS AN

THE COURTS TO STOP IS BASED ON THE FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE BUT

WEEKS AGO ONE OF THE FIRST EXECUTIVE ORDERS WAS TO PROTECT
DEEPLY HELD RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE TRYING TO
EXERCISE THEM IN BUSINESS.
IF YOU CAN BAN SOMEONE FROM COMING IN YOUR BAKERY BASED

WELLS FARGO HAS BEEN FUNDING THE DAKOTA PIPELINE AND AS A RESULT,
THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CITIES OR LOCAL POLITICIANS AT LEAST TWO
OF DECIDED, WE'RE GOING TO PULL HER MONEY OUT.
WE ARE DONE WITH YOU.
WE REPORTED ON THIS LAST WEEK.
IN SEATTLE WAS THE FIRST CITY TO DO THAT.
SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL VOTED AGAINST HER NEW CONTRACT

WE HAVE CITIES TAKING ACTION AGAINST THIS AND LOOK, EVEN IF

PIPELINE, IT AT LEAST SENDS A PRETTY STRONG MESSAGE TO
FIRST OF ALL BY THE LAWMAKERS TO THE PEOPLE THAT HEY, WE
HEAR YOU WE REPRESENT YOU AND THIS IS UNETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND
ALSO IT SENDS A STRONG MESSAGE TO BANKS AND KIND OF PUTS THEM
ON NOTICE REGARDING THE TYPES OF BUSINESSES THEY PLAN ON FUNDING.
YEAH, AND OBVIOUSLY BANKS USE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT CRITERIA
TO CHOOSE WHAT BUSINESS TO INVEST IN OR GIVE LOANS TO AND
GENERALLY THOSE ARE ECONOMIC PROJECTIONS AND RISK ASSESSMENTS
BUT IT COULD BE, AND MANY BANKS ARTIE HAVE THIS, THE MORAL
VALUE COMPONENT TO WHAT THESE COMPANIES DO.
THERE ARE A LOT OF BANKS WHO ONLY INVEST IN CERTAIN
TYPES OF CORPORATIONS WHO HOLD TO CERTAIN POLITICAL OR
RELIGIOUS VALUES AND IT COULD BE THAT MAYBE WITH ENOUGH
ACTIVISM AROUND THE COUNTRY, THE LARGEST BANKS CAN ALSO
START TO MOVE IN A DIRECTION TO.

THIS IS A LITTLE BIT OF GOOD NEWS REGARDING A
DEVASTATING STORY, BUT I LOVE THE ACTIVISM IN THIS CASE.

WELL, THEY WENT AGAINST THE DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINE
DURING OBAMA.
TO BE FAIR, THAT IS TRUE BUT I GUESS WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS
THIS TYPE OF ACTIVISM WASN'T REALLY AROUND FIVE YEARS AGO.

My model sentences are getting longer now,
so I'm using thought groups or intonation groups.
Remember what those are?
Sometimes our sentences begin with a longer thought.
It could be a phrase or a whole clause (with a subject and a verb).
We can use low-rise intonation to signal that we're not done yet.
There's more information that we'd like to add.
There's more than one intonation pattern we can use in longer sentences.
- Either in that first thought group or a middle thought group.
So I'll share a second.
It involves dropping our voice and then rising again.
Some call it a fall-rise intonation pattern.
We can use this fall-rise in many of the same places as the low-rise.
You try. Let's practice the fall-rise intonation pattern.
Repeat after me.
So what's the difference between the low-rise and and the fall-rise?
I don't believe there's a significant difference.
Both patterns end with a rise, and that signals incompletion.
You're not done with your thought.

Here's where I think there could be a difference.
Stating lists.
Listen and compare.
I have one pair of sneakers,
a few pairs of boots,
two pairs of sandals,
and...several pairs of dress shoes.

When I used low-rise intonation the first time,
I needed time to think.
My statement sounded more hesitant, less certain.
The second time I used fall-rise intonation.
It sounded more certain.

First, I'll use a low-rise.
1...2...3...4...5.
Now I'll try a fall-rise.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Sounds more certain.
I can make it even more certain and perhaps authoritative if I use that "angry parent" voice.
1, 2, 3, 4...
Do you see how the meaning...and the expression changes?
We can even put these two intonation patterns together in the same sentence.
I did this at the beginning of the video when I said,
...and then I add on.
We might also use a fall-rise when we need to pause because we're hesitating to add on.
To finish our thought.
We know what we're going to say, but perhaps what we're going to say is surprising or disappointing in some way.
You'll hear statements like,
You could try, but it may not work.
They're good, but expensive.
