At its press conference today,
NASA's announcement rocked a lot
of people's worlds.
Using the Spitzer space
telescope, astronomers have
identified 7 earth- sized
planets orbiting a star known as
Trappist 1âand at least 3 of
the planets have conditions that
would allow liquid water to
exist.
"The discovery gives us a hint
that finding a second Earth is
not just a matter of IF, but
WHEN."
Trappist 1 is considered a "red
dwarf" star, 1/12th the size of
the Sun and much cooler and Dr.
Paul Kalas of UC Berkeley says
the planets stay so close to it
that completing their orbits
takes from 22 days to just 24

light years from Earth, the

using radio telescopes to search
for transmissions from other

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — John Gillon hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, and Syracuse upset No. 10 Duke 78-75 on Wednesday night as the Orange kept alive their postseason hopes.
With just 7.5 seconds left on the clock after a Duke miss, Gillon drove to the top of the key and banked in a desperation shot to send the huge crowd into a frenzy as they stormed the court.
Syracuse (17-12, 9-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) had lost three straight and needed another signature victory to go with its two top-10 wins to bolster its resume for a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange have two games remaining, at Louisville on Sunday and at home to Georgia Tech on March 4.
Duke (22-6, 10-5 ACC) had won seven straight and entered the game tied for second in the ACC with Louisville, a game behind North Carolina, which hosted the Cardinals later Wednesday night.
Gillon finished with 26 points and Tyus Battle had 18 for Syracuse in a game that featured 11 ties, half of them in the closing minutes.
Luke Kennard led Duke with 23 points, Jayson Tatum had 19 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. They combined for 11 of Duke's 16 assists. Grayson Allen finished with eight points.

On Wednesday, the Trump administration ended federal guidelines that directed public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms matching their gender identities.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer argued that the decision should be made by the states instead.
"It's not a priority. There's a case pending in the Supreme Court in which we have to decide whether or not to continue to issue guidance to the court. It's dictated by that," he said Wednesday.
"It's incumbent on us to actually follow the law and to recognize that Title IX never actually talked about this."
The move was decried by celebrities who criticized the administration for failing to protect transgender students.
"Just seeing the news about removing laws protecting trans people. This isn't about politics. It's about human rights, and it's not okay," Ellen DeGeneres tweeted.
"For anyone who feels scared or hopeless, know that we will never stop fighting for your rights."
"This is everything wrong with the administration," Emmy Rossum wrote. "@POTUS acts out of fear and hatred of everything he doesn't understand. #Resist."

While serving as Oklahoma's attorney general, new Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt coordinated closely with fossil-fuel companies and special interest groups working to undermine federal efforts to curb planet-warming carbon emissions, newly released emails show.
More than 7,500 pages were released under court order Tuesday evening after an Oklahoma judge ruled that Pruitt had been illegally withholding his correspondence — which is public record under state law — for the last two years.
Pruitt's office was forced to release the emails after he was sued by the Center for Media and Democracy, a left-leaning advocacy group. Other emails are still being held back pending further review.

Attached to the lobbyist's email was a drafted letter opposing proposed federal regulations on fracking in Oklahoma. Two months later, Pruitt sent a nearly indistinguishable letter to the state's Interior Secretary. The only additions were Pruitt's signature, letterhead and one graph arguing that there was legal precendent to reject the proposed regulations.
The Republican-dominated Senate confirmed Pruitt as the new EPA head on Friday. Democrats had sought to delay the vote until the requested emails were released, but Republican leaders used their slim majority to push Pruitt through.

The Kings dealing star DeMarcus Cousins to the New Orleans Pelicans sent shockwaves across the NBA Sunday, particularly because of the return (or lack thereof) Sacramento received.
Damien Barling, a co-host of a sports talk show on the King's flagship station KHTK 1140 was very critical of the team's general manager Vlade Divac for making the trade on Monday and as a result was pulled off the air.
"We respect the right of all of our on-air hosts and employees to voice their professional opinions on a range of topics," KHTK sports program director Kevin Sherrets told the Sacramento Bee. "However, we do not condone malicious personal attacks on or from anyone. Comments of that nature do not reflect the views or sportsmanlike conduct of this station."
Vlade Divac has been the general manager of the Kings since August of 2015.

An NYPD traffic cop misused his post to boost his private police gear business on city time, authorities said Wednesday.
Wilfredo Vega, 55, pledged not to use city resources for his Junior's Police Equipment shop on E. 21th St. in Gramercy Park when he joined the NYPD in 2010.
But instead, Vega racked up "multiple, egregious" violations of the city's conflicts of interests law, officials said. They said he sold more than $35,000 worth of uniforms to a group of recruits at the NYPD Police Academy.
