Youtube daily report Feb 9 2017

[APPLAUSE]

Hi, I'm Samantha Bee.

Welcome to Full Frontal.

Let's check in, shall we?

Our institutions are strong, Nordstrom has not

been seized by the National Guard yet,

Napoleon Bona-Trump did pre-blame the judicial branch

for our next terrorist attack, you know, to save time.

He is a businessman.

He then immediately made the rounds

of the military and the Sheriffs' Association

to establish himself as their fluffer-in-chief.

We heard from sheriffs who said

they sat in those exact seats six months ago

in a different administration, and they felt this time

there was a president who actually

asked them, what do you need?

What do I need?

Lord have mercy, no one ever asked me about my needs.

Not till you blew into town, you handsome drifter.

[LAUGHTER]

Now what else happened that was terrible?

Oh, yeah, a sentient bag of hairspray fumes

was put in charge of education and the human antidote

to the Voting Rights Act moved forward with help

from a very neutered blue dog.

[BOOING]

None of which was a surprise.

But this was.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

[LAUGHTER]

I know!

We couldn't believe it either.

First, after briefly banning Kellyanne Conway for being

a flaxen-haired fountain of lies,

CNN let her back through the gates

straight into Jake Tapper's cage,

and they haven't fed him this week.

Saying that we don't cover terrorism, that's just false.

Sprays of falsehoods coming from the White House.

How about the president's statements that are false?

Falsehoods. False.

False.

Down, Jake.

[CHEERING]

Wow.

I didn't think CNN let you use the F-word on the air.

Now while Tapper cleaned his whiskers following his feast,

CNN whisked us back to the good old days of radio,

with a crackly broadcast of lawyers arguing the travel ban

case, which turned out to be the most riveting audio drama

since Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar,

the adventures of a man with an action-packed expense account.

Honestly , I have always wished to live in a country where

people listened to and live-tweeted important court

cases about civil liberties.

I just shouldn't have wished it on that monkey's paw.

[LAUGHTER]

Sorry.

Now was CNN done surprising us?

Nuh uh!

Next, they gifted us with the joy of pretending

the past year never happened!

Live from the George Washington University

in the nation's capital, this is CNN's debate

night on the future of the Affordable Care Act.

It's like Jeff Zucker looked at his election ratings

and said, hey, what if it was election all the time?

The socialist and the Slytherin played all their greatest hits.

I disagree with Ted, who wants to give

incredible tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.

When my dad went to Texas in 1957 when he was 18,

he couldn't speak English.

Incredible tax breaks for the top one percent.

And Bernie's solution, you know

I'm reminded of an old Saturday Night Live skit

with Christopher Walken.

Where they're playing in a band and he

keeps ringing the cowbell.

And every time they recorded, his solution

is, more cowbell, more cowbell.

And Bernie and the Democrats' solution is, more cowbell,

more cowbell!

Oh, god.

You're that twerp in high school who wouldn't shut up

about the knights who say Ni.

Please, someone take away Ted's Netflix

before he discovers Borat.

But comedy kryptonite aside, this event that we expected

to be a pointless trainwreck actually ended up

being a semi-thoughtful debate on the merits

and flaws of America's health care system.

We've got to join the rest of the industrialized world

and guarantee health care to all people as a right.

Just a couple of weeks ago on the Senate

floor I voted with you--

You voted by amendment--

--in support of that, in support

of allowing drug reimportation.

It was the right thing to do.

I can honestly say, I would give my left tit

to have either one of you wonderful mansplaining pricks

in the White House right now.

[CHEERING]

We were watching CNN, and not just in an airport

bar with the sound off.

We saw you serve the public interest for almost half a day.

And sure, it couldn't last forever.

We're just hoping you wake up hungry tomorrow.

We'll be right back.

[APPLAUSE] - Welcome back.

Before we go, big announcement.

Tonight is the one year anniversary of Full Frontal!

[CHEERING]

What do you know, a woman got a late night show and the world

didn't end.

OK, I'm so sorry, but I think we can all agree, it was worth it.

Now to celebrate our birthday, here

is our gift to you from what feels like 1,000 years ago.

Learn English Phrasal Verbs with BRING: bring on, bring about, bring forward... - Duration: 11:22.

Hi.

Welcome back to www.engvid.com.

I'm Adam.

In today's video we're going to look at phrasal verbs using the verb: "bring".

Once again, phrasal verbs: A verb and a preposition that together have a very different meaning

than the words by themselves, sometimes more than one meaning, as we're going to see here.

So we're going to look at: "bring up", "bring about", "bring around", "bring back",

"bring down", "bring in", "bring on", "bring off", and "bring to".

These are the ones we're going to look at today.

And again, each of them has at least one meaning, sometimes...

More often than not, more than one meaning.

So: "bring up", a few meanings to this one.

The most commonly used one is to bring up something means to raise, but not raise like

physically, raise in terms of conversation.

So if we're going to talk...

We're going to have a conversation and I want to talk about something specific, I'm going

to find an opportunity to bring it up in conversation.

So I'm going to raise that topic, and we're going to talk about it, and it's going to

be the focus of the conversation.

So if you're going to a meeting with your boss and you're thinking:

"Oh, it's time for my promotion",

somehow you'll find a way to bring it up into the conversation and eventually

talk about it.

You can also bring up a child.

So you can raise a child, that's the one...

The verb most people use about children, you raise children, but you also bring them up.

Now, it doesn't mean that you physically lift them.

It means you educate them, you feed them, you teach them about life, you prepare them

for the world they're going to live in.

Okay? So you bring them up.

Another thing sometimes people use "bring up" is to throw up, puke, vomit.

So, today I had a really bad lunch.

I hope I don't bring it up all over this video.

But I won't. Don't worry, I'm okay.

I had a nice lunch.

So: "bring up" sometimes used as vomit.

There's too many slang words for vomit.

"Bring about", two meanings for this one.

One is to cause to happen.

Okay?

So something...

One situation exists, this situation will likely bring about this result.

Okay?

If we talk about military spending, so the government has decided to go to war in this

part of the world, but all the major economists are warning that this war will bring about

the destruction of our country economically.

Okay?

The war will bring about economic hardships to this country.

We can't afford it.

So: "bring about".

Now, a little side note, not really anything to do with phrasals, but I know all of you

think of the words: "effect" and "affect".

A...

"A" is the verb, "e" is the noun, but

"effect" with an "e" is the same as "bring about",

it means cause to happen.

This is a verb.

So "e" can be a verb and a noun, "a" can be a verb and a noun, but that's a whole other lesson.

"Bring about", "effect", same meaning.

Okay.

"Bring around".

Oh, sorry. Another "bring about".

If you're ever on a ship and you need to turn that ship and bring it back to the port, then

you have to bring it about.

Basically means turn around.

But we use this mostly with ships, bring about.

Okay. "Bring around", a few meanings to this as well.

"Bring around" basically means to revive someone.

So somebody is passed out, they fainted or whatever happened, they're lying on the ground,

they look like asleep.

You're trying to bring them around, means recover consciousness.

Okay?

"Bring around" means also bring a friend over to meet other friends, like a casual visit.

And the most common use: If you have a very set opinion about something and I have a very

different opinion, I will do my best to bring you around to my opinion.

So I want to persuade you, I want to make you change your mind and bring you around

to view the situation from the way I view it, from my perspective.

So I'm going to bring you around to my point of view.

That's the most common use of "bring around".

"Bring back", so, again, there's the literal bring back.

So you bought something from a store, you took it home, like a shirt, you tried it on,

you realize: "You know what? I don't like it."

So you bring it back to the store.

Now you can also say: "take it back", but technically you're taking it with you, so

you're bringing it back to the store.

Now, sometimes, people, especially celebrities, they try to bring back something that used

to be very popular.

So if I started wearing, like, fur coats, and everybody thinks:

"Oh, this guy is so cool and so popular", then everybody starts to bring...

To wear fur coats.

So I brought back the fur coat.

Okay?

So, try to make something old popular again.

For example, for many, many years people have tried to bring back disco, but you can never

bring back disco.

Disco died when it died, and that's where it's going to stay.

"Bring down", a few meanings here.

First of all we're going to talk about collapse.

Now, it can be a physical thing, it can be a person.

So if you bring down a building, means you maybe blow it up and the whole building comes

down so you bring it down, you blow it up.

You can also bring down a person.

So if you create a scandal, let's say especially politicians, celebrities, they're in a very

high position, very high level, if you tell them:

"Oh, this man cheated on his wife with 20 women",

you're bringing him down, you're destroying his reputation and his position,

and his stature, status, etc.

"Bring down" means also to depress.

So we're all having a good time, I'm with my friends, we're at a bar, we're having a

few drinks, and somebody starts talking about politics.

We say: "Oh, you're bringing us down. Leave it alone.

We're here to have a good time. Not to be too serious."

So to bring people down or to bring someone down means to be depressing.

Okay.

You can also bring someone down to earth, but this is more of an idiom.

If somebody thinks very highly of themselves, you...

You tell them the reality, that they're not that special.

They're just like everybody else, so you bring them down from their high position.

"Bring in", a few meanings here as well.

"Bring in", so my friend is outside or my dog is outside and he's really cold, so I

bring him in.

Inside.

So that's the literal, bring indoors.

"Bring in" can also mean arrest.

So the police are chasing the suspect, somebody committed murder, the police chase him, and

they want to bring him in.

It means they want to arrest this person.

I hope you know this word: "arrest".

So: "to bring in" means to arrest.

Another meaning of "bring in", I work at a very good company and my friend just lost

his job, so I want to bring him in.

It means I want to bring him into my company and get him a job at the same company as me.

So sometimes they...

My bosses will let me bring somebody in who's good, sometimes not.

"Bring in", okay.

"Bring on", now, this can also mean you can bring someone...

I'm going to put it in a bracket, here.

Now, the same meaning as "in", "bring someone in" means introduce them into the company.

You can bring someone on board.

So I'm the boss, so this time I don't have to ask anybody, I can just take my friend

and bring him on board.

It means I give him a job, I introduce him to the company, and that's how he gets employed.

Now, a more common expression is: "bring it on".

Now, I'm not sure if any of you used to watch the news when President Bush, the younger

Bush was president and he said: "If anybody's going to...

If anybody wants to threaten America, bring it on."

So he's very tough, yeah, like: "I'm going to fight you".

"Bring it on" means basically I'm not afraid of you.

Bring whatever challenge you want to me, and I will face it.

Okay? So this is a very common expression: "bring it on".

Quite often people will just say: "Bring it".

"Bring it" means "bring it on", means: "Challenge me.

I will fight you. I will win.

I'm the best", because that's how they think.

"Bring off", to bring something off means to do it successfully.

Okay? So, I hired my friend again to organize my party and she really brought it off.

The party was amazing, everybody loved it, and a few of my friends asked me for her number

so they...

She can plan their party as well.

So she really brought it off.

She did something successfully.

Now, you can also talk about, like, when somebody's dressed, so...

Like let's say Lady Gaga.

I think everybody knows Lady Gaga.

Sometimes her clothes are a little bit, you know, crazy, but somehow she's able to bring

it off, means she's able to wear it so it actually looks good and people think she did

a very good job of it.

Okay, so now we're going to look at "bring to".

Now, "bring to" mostly is used with other words.

By itself, "bring to" means to try to revive someone.

So, again, somebody passed out, you're...

They're lying there fainted, so you're trying to wake them up, give them...

Regain consciousness.

More commonly we use "bring to" with other words.

So, for example: "bring to mind".

So: "bring to mind" means you're trying to get an idea into someone's head.

You want them to start thinking about it, so you bring it to mind, or you remind them

or you hint at it.

Or something brings something to your mind, means it makes you remember or makes you think

about something you haven't thought about in a long time.

We also have another expression: "bring to light".

If you bring something to light, means before it was in the darkness, it means nobody knew

about it. It was, like, hidden.

If you bring it to light you reveal it, you expose it.

You make everybody aware.

So a newspaper journalist, for example, a newspaper reporter, their job is really to

bring secrets to light.

They want people to see what's going on.

And one more expression, just like I'm doing right now, if you "bring someone to his knees"

or someone to...

Some people to their knees, means that you dominate them.

You beat them.

So if you have a contest and you bring someone to their knees, like they're down, they're

weak, they're subservient, so you weaken them at the end of the day.

Okay.

I hope these were clear.

Regresión equivocada | Caso Cerrado | Telemundo - Duration: 19:17.

"Some men never come across the Devil,

because they're traveling in his same direction."

Hello and welcome to Case Closed.

Wow!

What a macabre anonymous phrase!

Well, let's see what today's first case is about.

Please bring out the litigants.

The life I've led has been a personal hell.

I've paid for my mistakes with my own tears.

She's a traitor! I wish she were six feet under!

Hello and welcome.

-Hello. -Hello.

Erika, you're suing your husband Guillermo.

Yes.

Why are you suing him

and what do you demand to settle this case?

I'm suing my husband Guillermo.

I want a divorce and custody of our three-year-old daughter.

I want that too.

You both want the same thing?

Yes.

Well, at least you agree on something.

How long have you been married?

-Eight years. -Eight years.

I'm talking to the plaintiff.

Please remain quiet until I've finished with her.

You've been married for eight years

and you have a three-year-old child?

-Yes. -A daughter.

Is she your only child?

We used to have two.

-Two? -Yes.

Alright, tell me what happened, why you want a divorce,

and what happened to your other child.

I may be a terrible wife, but I'm not a terrible mother.

That's why I think my daughter should be with me.

I've always cared for her.

I'd like to tell you what happened to my son.

-Go ahead. -My son Guillermo was six.

One day, I was walking in the streets of Tijuana.

My one-year-old was with me on her stroller

and I was holding my six-year-old's hand.

I turned the corner and my daughter started crying.

I noticed she didn't have her pacifier.

I looked for it, found it, cleaned it and gave it to her.

When I turned around, my son had disappeared.

Someone had taken him.

I started yelling and calling him.

I was desperate.

A woman approached me

and told me she'd seen some people take my son.

She saw them put him in a gray van.

All I could think was that he'd been kidnapped.

The lady told me that I had to do something,

because people were kidnapping kids

and taking them to the border.

We called the police, but after 20 minutes they didn't show.

I took a cab and went to the border.

I'm sure you can imagine how many cars where in line.

-There were thousands of cars! -Yes.

I started looking for the van.

I spent about an hour and a half looking.

I saw the gray van and when I looked inside,

my son was there.

He was asleep, lying like this.

I told myself that I had to be smarter than them.

I had to get my son back.

I talked to one of officers and he told me to calm down.

He told me to wait until the van reached the checkpoint.

Once the van reached the checkpoint,

they asked a couple to get out.

They were wearing black. One tried to run.

They took my son out and tried to wake him up...

They took me inside.

I called my husband. My sister showed up as well.

Someone else came, but I don't remember who it was.

That's when they told me...

that my son was dead.

They explained a lot of things to me,

but I didn't know what was going on.

I asked to see my son.

I went into the room where they were keeping him.

He was lying on a bed covered with a sheet.

When I removed the sheet, he'd been opened up.

His organs had been removed, but not to be sold.

They'd filled him up with drugs.

They wanted to cross the border

with eight kilos of cocaine in his body.

I went crazy.

I spent over eight months in a hospital.

My husband Guillermo helped me get better.

I'd see my daughter every week.

Seeing her helped me get better.

What happened to my son ruined my life.

My daughter is all I have left. He can't take her away from me.

I'd die without her.

What happened to your marriage?

We don't love each other anymore!

It's over. He doesn't love me.

I don't love him. I just want my daughter.

-It was all your fault. -It wasn't.

What's that on your podium?

This is evidence of my stay at the hospital.

Alright, come here.

I also have information about the cartel...

I have information on the bastards who murdered my son!

It was your fault.

It wasn't my fault.

It was.

Alright, let me see this first. Let's see.

"This past week, the Border Patrol dismantled

a gang known to kidnap and murder women and children.

The gang not only removed their victims' organs

in order to profit from their sale,

but recently, they'd begun paying

anywhere from $500 to $2,000 for every young woman

or child they could get their hands on.

Their objective was to kidnap the victims, drug them,

and kill them so they could open them up,

remove their organs, and fill them up with drugs.

They would later smuggle the drugs into the US

through the border."

We're going to take a short break.

I brought a video to show you how close my daughter and I are.

Let's watch it before Guillermo responds.

Let's watch the footage.

What are you doing?

Huh?

Cleaning?

Make sure it sparkles, okay?

Alright?

Don't forget to do the laundry, alright?

Thank you, sweetie.

Guillermo, how do you respond?

Hello, ma'am.

I want a divorce and full custody of my daughter.

I have my reasons.

I can explain everything.

I've provided for my wife all this time.

I've been there for her.

I've worked for my family.

I've always been there for her.

She's been through a lot and so have I.

However, I'm here for another reason.

It's something she doesn't know.

What's that?

It's her fault my son's dead.

How can you say that? It was a tragedy!

You can't blame me.

Wait, Guillermo.

Why do you think she's to blame?

Because she...

-I don't know how to say it. -He just wants to blame me.

It turns out that she...

She was cheating on me.

She was sleeping around with another man.

That's why my son was kidnapped.

One day I got a call.

This man asked me if I was Guillermo.

I told him I was and asked him why he was calling.

He told me he needed to talk to me.

He said he was my wife's lover.

I couldn't believe it!

He asked to meet me in a parking lot to tell me everything.

He told me that my daughter's actually not my daughter.

That's not true! She's your daughter.

Lies! You're lying!

Do you have proof? Did you take a paternity test?

Yes.

I talked to him and he told me to do a paternity...

Come here. Let me see.

I did the test to find out the truth.

Well, this says she's your daughter.

-Of course she is! -Thank goodness.

Yes, but I was very worried.

I didn't tell her anything and took the paternity test.

I did this...

You had no right to do that!

So you met with a man who told you that he was her lover

and that she'd used the kids as to cover up their encounters.

Yes, I don't think it's fair for her to keep my daughter.

-It's not my fault! -That's why you want custody.

You don't think she's a good mother.

I can't trust her.

How do I know this won't happen again?

-It won't! -What if it happens again?

She's suffering, but so am I.

I understand.

Go back to your podium, Guillermo.

I understand.

You're wrong. It won't happen again.

I'll take care of my...

I don't believe you. I don't trust you anymore.

-You damn liar! -It wasn't my fault.

You were sleeping around!

-We've been over this! -No!

So the day your son was murdered,

you were meeting with someone else?

Yes.

Cheater.

Who has witnesses?

-I do. -So do I.

Let's bring out the defendant's witness.

No wonder the marriage is over.

I'd been wondering what had happened,

and now I see the reason.

-Hello. -Hello.

-Your name? -Marlene.

You're the defendant's witness.

Yes, he's my brother.

I'm here to tell you three things.

The first of which is that my brother is a good father.

He'd die without his daughter.

Without her, he'd get depressed.

His daughter loves him and he's always been a good father.

I give you my word.

Along with our mother, my brother and I will...

-You have no right! -We'll take care of the child.

Alright, what else?

Secondly, when she was sleeping around at a motel,

the two kids were with her.

The two kids were in the same room where she was having sex.

She admitted it.

Alright, you'll tell me the third thing when we come back.

I'm a good mother!

-No good mother does that. -I love my daughter!

Let's bring out the plaintiff's witness.

-You don't know anything. -You've had everything.

Hello. Your name?

Hello, ma'am. My name's Alonso.

Pleasure.

You're the plaintiff's witness, right?

Yes, I'm their neighbor.

I'm here for two reasons.

First of all,

I'm concerned about her safety and her daughter's.

Second of all, this man might look calm, but he's insane.

You don't know me!

Ma'am, he can't stay with my daughter!

Alright, Alonso. Please explain.

I was talking on the phone at my house's entrance.

I saw this maniac walking around

and when I hung up I asked him what he wanted.

He told me,

"Hey, you're Colombian. You can help me out."

To me, that was disrespectful.

I don't know what he meant by that.

He asked me if I knew anyone who could beat her up.

-Oh. -You see?

I was obviously alarmed. I told him he was crazy.

He reeked of alcohol. He's insane.

He looks like he's unhinged.

Good fathers don't want to have their kid's mother beaten up.

Right.

Alright.

That's why she can't stay with him.

You can still visit her.

Let's bring out...

Please be quiet!

Bring out Marlene Garcia, criminologist and sociologist,

and Dr. Madeline Hernandez.

-Hello. -Hello.

-This is horrible. -It is.

Please tell us about this new way of smuggling drugs.

I think that what we're seeing here is the desensitization

of people who are overexposed to a lot of violence.

This over exposure leads to them taking up

a "the end justifies the means" kind of attitude.

This is organized crime.

These people don't care about anyone's lives.

They're completely desensitized.

These are people who've seen so much violence in their lives

that the most horrifying act in the world, which is murder,

doesn't even faze them.

To them, it's just part of the business.

Alright, let's try to think about the child's well-being.

They're both fighting for the child's custody

for very different reasons, right?

He thinks she's a bad mother because she was cheating on him

and she took the kids and made them a part of the lie.

She was using the kids to cover up her affair.

Undoubtedly, that's...

It shows poor judgment.

It shows very poor judgment on her part.

However, how many women do that sort of thing?

There are many women who use their kids in different ways.

Sometimes they use them to cover up their infidelity

but sometimes use them to get back at their spouses.

These things are very common, which is sad,

because the kids are the ones who suffer the most.

In this case, the child was one,

so she won't remember.

The boy was murdered.

It's a bit worrying that she did that.

Though it doesn't mean she's unfit to care for her child...

Know what I thought was more alarming?

The video we saw here of the child cleaning the sink.

She even told her to do the laundry

and the laundry was a huge pile of clothes.

She's a very small child.

Yes, she is.

I was really confused by that.

She likes to help me.

I just recorded her

because I thought what she was doing was funny.

She always tries to help me.

She's trying to imitate me!

Oh, I don't know.

I don't think that's appropriate.

I think it's inappropriate.

It's very inappropriate.

She's always trying to imitate me.

Alright, that's enough.

What worries me the most is this woman's lack of judgment.

Obviously, children need their parents.

They need to be looked after.

However, it's important for her to use

the appropriate methods when raising her child.

I think there has to be some sort of control or supervision.

She might even need parenting classes

to help her understand what she must do as a mother

so that she can raise her child correctly and safely.

Alright, I'm ready to make my ruling.

You both live in San Diego, right?

Yes.

-You both do, right? -Yes.

Okay.

I grant you the divorce

because the marriage is irreparably broken.

I wasn't told of any assets.

You didn't mention it, but if you do have assets,

then split everything 50-50,

in accordance with the laws in California.

As for the child's custody,

I'll grant the father temporary custody of the child.

Ma'am, you can't do this!

Please, please! She's my daughter.

You'll have temporary custody until the plaintiff...

Please!

The plaintiff will be able to see her daughter

under supervision while she receives therapy, counseling,

and takes classes so she can be taught

how to do what's best for her daughter.

Once she's met all the prerequisites

and once she's taken parenting classes, therapy, etc.,

I expect them for them to have shared custody of the child,

which is the norm here in the US

as it allows both parents to have an input

in the raising of their child.

The problem is that right now I'm worried

that she might not be doing what's best for the child.

Once she's done everything, we'll change the arrangement.

You'll have custody

and she'll have visits on every other weekend.

She'll be able to see the child two days a week for dinner,

but the child will spend most of her time with you.

Please!

Do what I've told you

and you'll be reunited with your daughter.

It's final. Case closed!

MARIN COUNTY GOT SLAMMED

YESTERDAY - AND THEY'RE ABOUT TO

GET SLAMMED AGAIN.

TONIGHT:

JOE VAZQUEZ REPORTS.. ALL EYES

ARE ON THE HILLDSIDES.. AND THE

MUD.

STANDUP: Joe Vazquez / Fairfax

This is Manor Hill in Fairfax,

where as you

can see, a massive mudslide came

charging down the hill yesterday

... and crashed right into this

home ... right through the front

door! SOT: The mudslide came

down and broke our front door in

half.

TRACK: Zach Laurie was driving

to work in San Francisco

yesterday morning ... his wife,

Maggie Bridges, was home with

their four year old son when she

heard - and felt - the earth

begin to move.

Zach Laurie / Fairfax

She didn't know where it was

coming from ... this rumbling

noise .. and then it slammed

against the house ... and she

says she even, like, fell ...

and then ... the front door just

buckled! TRACK: Maggie knew she

had to escape quickly.

Zach Laurie / Fairfax

So she just grabbed my son and

they went out the bathroom

window and ... ran barefoot to

the neighbors.

TRACK: Living along the

gorgeous rolling hills of Marin

County now comes with an extra

chance of danger ... The ground

is completely saturated, making

the storm-battered steep slopes

prone to mudslides ... nats

TRACK: Last night, we showed

you this large mudslide that

stalled in the middle of the a

hill on via la cumbre. Work

crews spent all night and much

of today removing debris and

covering it with a giant tarp

... They hope it will stave off

a disaster, as there are homes

just below. Julian Skinner /

Public Works Director, city of

Larkspur

We've had up to a half a dozen

slides ... this is the biggest

one in Larkspur. TRACK: Public

Works Director Julian Skinner

says it's a challenge across the

county ... Julian Skinner /

Public Works Director, city of

Larkspur

There's hills all over the place

... a lot of them are rock ...

But you have little areas where

the material is not as stable

and it moves. TRACK: Officials

say the slides often happen very

quickly, so they are asking

folks who live on hillsides to

be especially alert ... as the

next storm approaches.

TRACK: In Fairfax, on the

nightbeat, I'm Joe Vazquez.

In Fairfax, Joe Vazquez, KPIX5.

THE STORM IS ALREADY CREATING A

MESS IN THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS

TONIGHT.

THAT'S WHERE WE FIND OUR BETTY

YU RIGHT NOW.

BETTY, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US:

Betty: Every corner of this

county is seeing problems...

alternate routes to main ones

are blocked.. slow going all

around town

ã

Tonight, this giant tree fell

smack in the middle of bear

creek road off highway 17.

Others leaned onto criss-

crossed power lines. And thick

mud is smeared all over the

road.

ã

NATS tree cutters backing up ã

Crews are racing to patch things

up before another powerful storm

rolls through tomorrow morning.

ã

Across santa cruz county, the

ground is saturated and

unstable. This driver went to

the store last night and on the

way back, he couldn't tell that

skyland road had given way. He

landed in a gaping hole.

Luckily, his van didn't tumble

down the mountainside and he

escaped unharmed.

ã

NATS hwy 17

Only one lane is open in both

directions on highway 17 near

vine hill road, after an epic

mudslide completely shut down 17

for hours yesterday. Today,

Caltrans brought in a special

climbing excavator known as the

spider to tackle the job.

SOT: Devin Porr / Resident

Engineer - Caltrans

"so as you can see the spider is

a very functional machine

allowing us to get to terrain

that we couldn't otherwise reach

from the bottom or from the

top."

ã

At times, caltrans had to close

the entire highway again for

fear that boulders would come

crashing down over the median.

ã

NATS Len tractor

ã

Elsewhere in Los Gatos - even

heavy machinery was no match for

mother nature. This front loader

couldn't get through at first to

help with the cleanup. check out

what's left of Brian Ward's

home. His pregnant wife grabbed

their baby and ran for their

lives yesterday when the

mountain let loose above. ã

SOT: Brian Ward / Los Gatos

"thankfully her instinct was to

just jump out of bed, grab my

daughter and run out of the

house barefoot and everything."

ã

Trees, boulders and mud came

crashing down. Brian was working

on his motorcycle at the time...

now it's under a giant redwood.

ã

Betty: hwy 17 work can take

another 4 days... traffic

pattern will stay the same

Volvo V90 Cross Country - AutoWeek Review - English subtitles - Duration: 6:39.

Twenty years ago, Volvo facelifted the 850.

From that moment on, the 850 sedan would be called S70. The station wagon got renamed as well, to V70.

The V70 also came with an increased ride height and four-wheel drive. That version was called V70 XC.

With the XC, Volvo embarked on a new path they never were on before. They kept going though, because every generation of V70 that followed, got a Cross Country.

The current V90 isn't an exception, and that's why we're going for a little drive in the Volvo V90 Cross Country.

Quite some time ago, Eagle pulled the plug on it's Eagle, and with that decision, the toughened-up station wagons disappeared.

But eventually, Volvo picked up the baton with the first V70 XC, twenty years ago.

They held on to that baton. That's why we're driving a heightened V90.

The heightening has been achieved by using bigger tyres, but mostly by heightening the suspension by 6 cm.

Because of that increased ride height, the ground clearance is 21 cm.

That's dangerously close to the ground clearance the bigger XC90 has, the two are just 2 cm apart!

Of course, because of the increased ride height, the suspension is a little bit less dynamic.

Then again, this car isn't meant to be dynamic. Volvo's intention was to make a comfortable cruiser, and that's exactly what they've done.

The springs and damping are all aimed at comfort.

Optionally the car is available with air-suspension on the rear axle, like we have on this car.

And I have to say, that makes the ride very pleasant. Even when you're driving on bad roads, which shouldn't be a problem for this car, it's very bearable.

Basically, the V90 Cross Country is still a V90. That means the interior is the same, just like the room and usage of the buttons.

Generally, the engines are also the same.

The big difference, is the heightened suspension. Also, the drivetrain has got an off-road mode.

It's not a big deal, but when you need it: it's there.

It means the ESP won't react as quickly, and that's nice when you're driving off-road.

You don't want the car to correct the slightest slip in gravel or something, because the car would get very uneasy and that isn't necessary really.

So, Volvo gave the car that freedom.

In off-road mode, you can lighten the steering a little bit. You'll still have enough feedback through the wheel though.

Also, the transmission behaves a little bit differently, which ables you to control the throttle even better.

And, there's a 'Hill Descent'-function. That makes sure the car doesn't roll down the hill uncontrollably.

Instead, the car is in control and makes sure it all goes smoothly.

That's nice and all, but most of the time you won't be off-roading and this will be a car for daily use.

Right. We're driving the car through the high north of Sweden, so there's a lot of snow and ice.

That's why Volvo has fitted this car with spiked tyres, and that gives the car a different ride than with normal tyres,

so it isn't representative for what we can expect in the Netherlands.

But even though it's got spiked tyres, it's very comfortable. However, the spikes give the car extra rolling sound, which you can hear very clearly.

Other changes to the suspension include a bigger tread width.

At the front and at the back, the tread width increased by a few centimetres when compared with the normal V90.

That makes the car even more stable, an important thing when going off-road.

Right now, we're driving the petrol powered version. We've also driven the diesel version, and in both cases the engine is nearly silent.

It's not like you can rise above the sound of the spiked tyres, but we already know the engines from the normal V90, so there's nothing to complain about.

The drivetrain is very comfortable, the 8-speed automatic gearbox does what it's supposed to do.

Volvo supplies the Cross Country in two versions: the normal V90 Cross Country and the Cross Country +

When it comes to equipment, the two can be compared with the normal V90 Momentum and Inscription.

The pricing is also very similar. If you take the same engine and four-wheel drive drivetrain on the normal V90,

the Cross Country will be about €3500 more expensive. Not to bad.

When you put it all together, Volvo has made the V90 Cross Country a very comfortable and very good car.

Of course, they owe that to themselves.

The base price is just over €64,000, and that makes the car significantly cheaper than the A6 Allroad.

However, there are more alternatives...

Soon, Mercedes-Benz will present the E-Class All-Terrain, that one will be in the same price range as the A6 Allroad.

That means, Volvo has a very good deal with their V90 Cross Country. A very good car for a decent price.
