Welcome to my first unboxing video!
I ordered a replica of a Roman helmet online, so let's check it out!
I ordered this package from the CelticWebmerchant.com.
Actually, I had a little bit of bad luck: the first time, there was a manufacturing error
...but the people over at the CelticWebmerchant.com were very professional about it and they replaced
it immediately.
Okay, so let's open it up!
As you can see, it comes well-oiled and wrapped up really securely.
So here it is!
Looks good, right?
Before I try it on, let me first tell you a little bit about this particular helmet
and also a little bit more about the original.
Like I just mentionned, I bought this helmet from the CelticWebmerchant.com, but it was
produced by an Indian comany called Deepeeka.
It weighs 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs).
It has a black finish on the inside, probably to avoid rust.
On the inside of the neck guard, there's small loops to wear it (the helmet) on your chest
when you're not wearing it on you head.
Nice little extra: the helmet came with a replica of a coin of emperor Hadrianus!
The helmet also came with a cap for padding which
should make it easier to wear.
Now, about the original: it's a helmet that was found in Nijmegen (Netherlands).
It probably belonged to a Roman soldier that lived in the late 1st century BCE during the
reign of emperor Augustus.
This type of helmet is interesting because it shows the transition between helmets like
the "Port-type" helmet and the iconic helmets of the Imperial period.
By the way, the Port-type was first made by Gauls and introduced to the Roman armies of
Iulius Caesar during the Gallic Wars.
A new addition to this generation of helmets, was the reinforcing peak on the forehead.
This provides some extra protecion against frontal blows.
Another innovation is the small recess were the ears go.
Most earlier types of Roman helmets like the Montefortino and the Coolus lacked this kind
of opening.
These earlier types offered more protection to the ears, but made it somewhat more difficult
to hear commands or enemy movement.

So I've tried putting it on, as you can see.
I think it looks really awesome with the large neck guard and the reinforcing peak.
It does look a bit big, because my head isn't too big, but because of the cap, it doesn't
feel like it's TOO large.
I can still see enough and I don't feel like it's going to fall off or something, so that's
not a problem, but I think if your head is quite large, it will still fit.

For the specifics on that, I'll put a link in the description, because on their website
they give all the dimensions and stuff like that.
As opposed to most other Imperial-type helmets, this type doesn't have loops on the inside
of the cheek guard.
Rather, it has a stud on each side.
The cheek pieces may have been closed with the method that can be seen on this bust:
the stud is pushed through a hole in a leather strap and the strap is then pulled towards
the other side of the face and behind the head.
Maybe the strap was even pulled through the loops on the neck guard?
Now, this is going to look a little bit silly, but I'm going to use a rubber band to close
the cheek guards as I haven't made a leather strap yet.
At least this way you'll get an idea of what it looks like without my hands getting in the way.

This is what it looks like from the side, so you can see how my ear fits into this part.
It actually...It feels a bit lighter than I expected.
1.5 kg is quite a lot, but it doesn't feel that heavy at all.
So overall, I'm very satisfied with this product.
I think it looks great!
Must have been pretty intimidating to face an opponent wearing one of these (^_^)
