Youtube daily report Feb 21 2018

Zorba.

Zorba.

Zorba.

What if your briefcase had a secret?

Zorba.

What instead of reams of paper inside was full-featured computer?

Zorba.

Introducing, Zorba.

A rugged, portable computer for the new millennium.

Featuring a 7" green CRT monitor, two 5.25 double sided, double density disk drives and

detachable keyboard with 2 foot coiled cord.

Available now for just $1,595.

Zorba.

It's worth it.

Zorba Portable Computer.

The Expert's Choice.

Vsauce!

Kevin here.

With a 34-year-old computer that took me three weeks, 30 emails with three vintage computer

experts and a special request from an eBay store exclusively dedicated to selling old

floppy disks… just to get it to play Zork.

This is the Modular Micros Zorba 7.

One of the earliest mobile computers, its 22 pound weight is 11 times heavier than a

current MacBook, but it cost about the same at $1595.

Except that after adjusting for inflation, that %1595 is actually $4,000 today.

So in 1984, the equivalent of four grand got you 4 MHz.

Which at the time was four times the clock speed of Apollo 11's guidance computer,

but was about 996 MHz short of being able to run Flappy Bird.

So what can you do with this?

Skyrim.

Well, 1977 Skyrim.

A game called Zork.

Alright, so let's do this.

Let's pop this in and check it out.

There's the disk, hit enter.

And.. error.

And error.

Error.

It's literally just gonna keep doing this.

This is where I was stuck for weeks.

I'm just gonna reset it because it's not gonna stop beeping.

Okay and we're back.

This computer will not run software without very specific boot disks because it has no

built-in operating system.

Zorba was one of the last 8-bit portable computers running CP/M -- an operating system which

required booting from a disk before loading any software.

Computers that ran CP/M could run virtually any software at that time since it was industry

standard -- which it would have remained, except the company who developed CP/M failed

to sign a legal agreement with IBM to use it on their brand new 16-Bit computers…

So IBM went with Microsoft instead and MS-DOS conquered PCs.

Whoops!

The problem with my Zorba is I bought it without any disks.

Only 6,000 Zorbas were ever made, so finding one that still functions and has the system

disks is tough.

Also finding anyone who A: Knows how Zorba works and B: Has the ability to make new Zorba

disks was… difficult.

The disk with all the errors was from some guy who didn't know what he was doing.

But a guy named Retro Rescue System did know what he was doing and came through and made

me this system disk which does work.

Check it out.

Oooh.

And Zorba is alive.

It has a built-in 7" CRT screen, 4mhz CPU, 64k bytes of RAM, detachable keyboard, and

a weather-proof protective carry case.

These computers were referred to as "luggables" and they're the direct ancestors of laptops.

It was designed for business professionals to do spreadsheets and word processing but

it became capable of doing world processing.

In 1977 -- the same month Star Wars came out -- four guys from MIT turned a side project

into one of the most influential and forgotten pieces of gaming history.

Zork was the first game to implement gameplay elements that seem so self-evident that we

don't even think about them now.

Okay let's load Zork.

Now that the operating system is loaded in disk drive A, we have to access disk drive

B which is where Zork 1 is loaded.

And now that B is accessed we just type in Zork1 and return...

I messed that up.

Don't mess this up.

It's very particular.

And there we go.

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.

There is a small mailbox here.

So one of the gameplay elements that we don't think about today is objects having weight.

A solid gold bar weighs more than a newspaper, and the total number of objects carried depends

on the weight of their contents.

Think Dark Souls.

Or that items themselves can have contents.

Meaning, it's not just a bottle, it's a bottle that must be opened because there's

water inside that you need.

And the capacity of containers is also considered so a paper bag won't hold as much as a bucket.

Zork also featured gaming's first real villain with its own personality.

In his book Twisty Little Passages, Nick Montfort identifies the thief as gaming's first memorable

character.

And the monstrous grue, responsible for one of the 28 ways you can die in Zork, became

an early meme, you can still find "You are likely to be eaten by a grue" T-shirts on

Amazon.

Zork's creators were inspired by a groundbreaking game called Colossal Cave Adventure.

"Adventure" was a text-based journey through a fictional underground cave based on the

actual Mammoth Caves in Kentucky, and researchers with access to high-end computers were in

love with it.

Dave Lebling, one of the Zork creators, said, "For 2 weeks, all work on the ARPANET stopped."

The precursor to the internet was delayed because of a video game.

But Adventure was too simplistic for them.

The parser only allowed for two-word commands, like "Go north" or "Take shovel."

They wanted to create a dynamic, immersive text adventure that could handle nuanced full

sentences and had a sense of humor.

Zork players could type full commands like > SWING BOTTLE AT TROLL, and they'd be met

with responses such as "Trying to attack a troll with a glass bottle is suicidal."

To distribute the game, Zork partnered with Personal Software, a company with an impossibly

generic name.

PS was responsible for VisiCalc, the first ever spreadsheet program.

Visicalc was one of the first pieces of software to lure businesses into computers -- and Zork

was along for the ride.

It's funny to think about now, but at that time, people had never seen a game this detailed

-- it wasn't even like playing a game.

It was like playing a book.

But there was no in-game map or strategy guide, let alone walkthroughs or YouTubing.

Zork players spent weeks making their own detailed maps of the world's dungeon, items,

mazes, and NPCs.

Although they eventually published a hint book printed in invisible ink to avoid spoilers

which now goes for $150 bucks.

The result was connecting a complex story directly to each player's imagination.

Without graphics to influence your concept of the game, everything you visualized came

from your own thoughts.

And like modern franchises like The Witcher or Mass Effect, players made choices and those

choices had ramifications.

They had agency in a fantasy world unique to them.

Zork was you -- only you.

Zork's rich world model helped pave the way for everything from Zelda to Resident

Evil, but very few people seem to talk about Zork.

So what happened?

Zork sold nearly half a million copies over the next 5 years and helped fuel the first

round of the personal computer boom.

But computers got more powerful.

Companies like Sierra invested early in graphics-based games which were about to take over.

Suddenly, the pioneering genre of text-adventure games became an echo of the past.

In 1985, Super Mario Bros. revolutionized home gaming on the NES and that system was

so legendary that Nintendo recently revived it with the NES Classic and sold over 2 million

units.

No one is reviving Zorba.

By the time Zorba came out in 1984 it was pretty much dead luggable walking.

Apple's Macintosh introduced the GUI with its famous Super Bowl ad and IBM's DOS-based

PCjr came at an affordable $999.

Zorba was trapped in time.

But Zorba was part of the initial wave of being able to take a computer with you.

Zork was ground zero.

Oh this is really hard to do.

This thing, no wonder no one bought this thing.

Let's take this thing with me, clunk, clunk, clunk.

Alright.

Zork was ground zero for complex storytelling.

And now everyday, we walk around with a computer in our pocket capable of turning our lives

into digital stories.

Your phone is Zorba.

Your life is Zork.

And the decisions we make can lead to Grue or gold.

And as always, thanks

for watching.

Ice Cave and Snowmobile Tour of Langjökull Glacier from Reykjavik - Duration: 2:33.

(upbeat music)

- Iceland is a land of fire and ice,

and today we are exploring the ice of the ice caves

with a snowmobile tour on Langjökull Glacier.

So on the way to your first stop,

you get access to these touch screens.

Now this is like a GPS guide, it's incredibly informative.

Right now, we are on Langjökull Glacier.

I gotta get myself a snowmobile,

and we are gonna cross it, you and me.

The first time on a snowmobile,

no worries if you've not done it before, they train you.

Now we're gonna convoy our way up to the ice caves.

All right, now let's make our way into the ice caves.

The great thing about these crampons is that

we're gonna be able to actually walk on the ice

in the ice cave here.

This is beautiful.

We're in the belly of Langjökull Glacier.

This little bridge is taking us across

a massive crevice that splits the glacier.

- So if there's less than 6% of oxygen,

then the light gets in and gets trapped

and reflects only a bluish tint.

- I am absolutely blown away.

It's massive and it's gorgeous.

You feel like you're in another world.

We just finished at the ice caves,

and now we're at our next stop.

I can hear it from here.

We're gonna see some cool waterfalls.

It's amazing seeing the power of this water.

It's hard to believe that we were just on that very glacier.

Or if you'd prefer, after the ice caves you hike

to Húsafell for a relaxing soak

in the geothermal swimming pools.

If we're talking Iceland's fire and ice,

this is the fire part.

This geothermal pool is getting heated

in those mountains over there.

This is the perfect temperature.

What a great day.

ESTO SUCEDIÓ EN MI CIRUGÍA DE NARIZ | POLINESIOS VLOGS - Duration: 8:23.

Ok, we're here...

He is speaking in Korean.

Do not laugh because he's going to laugh! He can not laugh!

How are you, Rafita?

Rafa is very drugged.

So drugged!

No, it's not true, he can not talk, but right now he is resting and he is going to be here for an hour to

see if he can go home and if not, he is going to have to stay here, it depends how he

feels, now let's see. .. to be with him for a little while.

We brought you something. Since we do not know if you're staying, then we brought you an outfit and

a little flower.

A cotton for you to be soft.

Oh! Little heart.

Lesslie.

- Did you see his nose? - Yes.

It is so pretty.

Rafita has a lot of pain... obviously it hurts.

And now they are going to check his pressure and his temperature before leaving to see if everything is ...

- Do you want to go? - He already wants to go.

- Yes? Did he say? - Yes

He is a warrior, I mean, really I can not believe that after a surgery like this you can go to your

home, but it is the methods and the scientific advance that physicians have made here in Korea.

Maybe in another country it would be more complicated because they are different techniques.

Ana, what are you signing?

That I give it up and I'm going to leave it here for experiments.

Oh God! They have started.

We're leaving this place, say goodbye.

We're home and Rafa is having his first glass of water.

All right, pain? no pain?

- I do feel a lot... - Me too.

Now what we are doing is drinking water because he has not eaten anything for more

than 24 hours.

Do you remember, Polinesios, that we had gone to the supermarket? That we bought a lot of food

and now we have a full fridge? Well now Lesslie and I, our mission is to finish this meal

because Rafa can not eat any of that anymore.

You made us buy a lot of food, Rafa.

This is Rafa's food, from here to here. I bought almond milk, rice milk,

bought a yoghurt, beans, pumpking porridge, rice with vegetables.

So these are the only things Rafa can eat because he can not eat anything that

he has to chew.

We are going to let him lie down for a while and then give him one of his little milks so that he can

rest super well.

Show them what your travel pills are.

No, they are for emergencies, that is, if something happens, it is in case of emergency, but...

What is the emergency? I do not know!

It's his medicine, see. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

They gave us some things to reduce his face, the time of Rafa's food arrived

and they gave us pumpkin juice that helps to reduce inflammation.

Lesslie, you did not serve the juice well, what are those bad serves? You're not being a good

nurse, a good caregiver.

I'm the best, contract me.

Of course not.

Polinesios, Rafa just wrote this tweet and...

And the polinesios are hardly going to find out what that tweet was about.

Rafa is going to sleep here, well, go to sleep!

The problem we face in Rafa's food...

Everything he can eat, we can buy it in the super and...

It is very processed, so what we plan to do is liquefy his food, the problem

is that we do not have a blender.

What do you say about it, Rafa?

He is seeing NINJAGO

Did he see NINJAGO? Do you like NINJAGO a lot?

It is your voice.

"We have you surrounded Garmadon."

I want you to see this.

This is what they put you in the hospital when you have a lot of pain.

It is serum with medication inside and you only put it here in his bag and he can go anywhere.

Right now we're back, Rafa.

Do not die, please!

Lesslie.

Get out of there, Lesslie, let's go to what we come.

Now ... The leg!

Get down from there. My God, Lesslie!

We come for the blender and we are finding but these are very large, so we need

an express juice one.

We have found it.

Finally we found the blender that we were looking for.

It's that little one there.

What are we going to feed him?

There are spinach, there are apples and water.

His diet is going to be spinach, apple and water, ok?

We went to the super to buy some wipes, pineapple, water...

- We also take porridge - Natural ones.

Karen starts dancing in the aisle of the supermarket. Karen!

Polinesios, Karen left me. Surely she went to eat something because she was already very hungry

and she was complaining, so let's go look for her...

Oh! We already found this girl. Here she goes. Why did you leave me paying? You left.

Because I came to see what we were eating and I found this delicious.

It's done, let's see this delicious meet.

Mmmm! It is delicious!

We arrive home and we will see Rafa what is doing.

We see him in the distance. Greets!

Ok, it's time to prepare his delicious juice of today that have...

Strawberry and pineapple! Do you like it?

Ok, let's prepare his dinner for today because we've already had dinner, my brother.

Taste your juice!

He liked it!

We make very good juices.

Good morning, polinesios! He has his first meal...

Polinesios, we came to the clinic two days later, they are going to remove the nose

plug, that was there, it was hurting all day, so he could not change well,

so he could not move so well because that thing was very painful .

Can you breathe?

Oh you cried, Rafita!

Did it hurt a lot?

Never touch yourself inside the nose, okay?

Now you are giving directions of how he should wipe his nose. You just have to

touch like the inside part like that and like that and you have to do it very well because if not, it can affect

everything that was done to you and it can hurt and you can swell more.

Polinesios, now they are going to put him an injection to reduce inflammation and that it does not take so long to recover.

They also put their little glasses because they are going to do it with a laser and this will go

through his arm and that is what will help him to reduce his face.

Polinesios, we left the clinic and now we find food for Rafa.

Powdered! You only put water and you already take it, this has rice.

Honey corn!

They say it's the food of the future, I would not eat these things.

- Oh no, Rafael! - Would you? Oh no!

Polinesios, we are already here in the restaurant we wanted, Rafa is going to prepare his meal.

Green cereal and there it has its porridge and its rice. You are going to eat that and we are going

to eat a delicious broth with meat.

You serve here in this dish what you want to put to your soup in this, it's like

I do not know what it is.

Rafa, I have a vegetable dish for you so you can chew it. You can not...

Hmmm, how bad!

We are going to prepare this delicious broth with a piece of meat here, see, that is, I have just

put it in and it has already been cooked. Oh, how fast!

Let's put a little of vegetables, see this. How delicious! We are going to...

This is how they do it. So and then...

Rafa, how do you feel that the points are going to be removed now?

Oh, finally, now! I did not want to have this anymore.

Nothing of that anymore.

Is it going to hurt? No?

Maybe it hurts a little.

A little?

Maybe a lot.

'He Disliked A Lot Of People,' Says Former Teacher Of Accused Florida School Shooter - Duration: 1:40.

Well just hours after reportedly opening fire

on a Broward County, Florida high school

and killing 17 people, Nikolas Cruz appeared in court

where his public defender called him,

"a broken human being."

Now she isn't the only person saying Cruz

is a troubled young man.

Joining us now is Cruz's former Spanish teacher,

Alicia Blonde, as well as Ethan,

who has been friends with him, on and off,

since the sixth grade.

Alicia, Cruz was diagnosed

with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Did you see any of this when you had him as a student?

He was a quiet boy.

His work was erratic.

Sometimes he would turn in assignments.

Sometimes he would not.

I tried to approach him several times.

"What's going on?"

"Why are you turning in your work partially?"

Because I knew he could do it.

He was a smart boy.

But I didn't really witness anything about ...

and I've been at that school of 18 years

in most of my career.

I've taught students that I have seen throughout those years

that have had a lot of issues

that I would classify.

Nik was not one of them.

I think he had hate.

I think he disliked a lot of people.

And I believe that this is what this crime was about.

This crime was not about a young man who was mentally ...

And I apologize 'cause

I'm not a therapist or a psychologist,

but I believe that this was more of a hate, the crime

rather than a crime of a young man that was disturbed.

Dr Phil Reviews Personality Traits And Behaviors Exhibited By School Shooters - Duration: 4:34.

I know the shooter. (tense music)

I was on the bus with the shooter.

I know his bus stop.

(echoing thumping)

In sixth grade he screamed racial slurs

at my Chinese friend at lunch.

He was saying offensive, and rude,

and annoying things in class, and a kid

got up and punched him in the face.

I don't want anyone to think that this

is because he's mentally unstable.

I'm pretty darn sure (whooshing)

that he's just a sociopath

that cannot be charged (whooshing)

as an insanity plea.

On Valentine's Day 2018, 19 year old Nikolas Cruz

allegedly entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High,

the school he had been expelled from,

and allegedly opened fire, killing 17 students

and faculty. Thank you.

With an AR-15 that he legally purchased.

In the days that followed, many who spoke of Cruz

said he was a troubled outcast

and it was no surprise that he carried out this heinous act.

Now, I've talked about the fact

that sometimes these individuals

will present different personas

to different peoples in different situations.

And people will always say "Who does this kinda thing?"

And believe me, the FBI,

the Secret Service, state and local officials

have all done profiles on these individuals,

and you hear a lot that these are kids

that are loners, that they're marginalized,

that they've been bullied, that they're picked on.

But the truth is you'll see one profile

that says that and another profile that says different.

You see lots of contradictions.

There's one set of core characteristics

that seem to cut across all a this, is number one,

they do tend to have a lack of self-control.

And this will show up in school, behavior at home,

maybe with tantrums, maybe doing things

on impulse that get them in trouble.

So there's a definite lack of self-control.

And then there's what we refer to in the field

as the Dark Triad of Personality

that's made up of what's called Psychopathy,

Narcissism, and Machiavellianism.

Psychopathy is defined by people that are non-empathetic.

They do not have the ability to feel remorse,

and they're disinhibited.

It means they can't pump the break,

they can't inhibit their behaviors.

Now, when I say non-empathetic,

they absolutely have the inability to put themselves

in someone else's shoes and imagine how it would feel

to experience what they're feeling,

which means they're really disconnected.

You say "How can they go in and shoot innocent people?"

Because they have an inability to put themselves

in the position of that innocent person

and imagine how they would feel

or how their family would feel

if they were shot and killed or injured.

There are kids that simply cannot do that.

Now, Narcissism, they're grandiose,

they look for self-gratification on an immediate basis,

and a course they're very egotistical.

People think these are folks that have low self-esteem

and they do this to equalize themselves.

That's not true.

They're egotistical.

They're entitled.

They come in there with a sense of superiority

and think they have the right to do what they're doing.

And then this Machiavellianism, they're unemotional,

detached, amoral, deceptive, and manipulative.

He was very deceptive with you,

he was very manipulative with you,

and amoral in the sense that he didn't feel

he owed you because you opened your home to him;

he was not empathetic.

He didn't say look, these people deserve better from me.

When you saw him, you yelled something at him.

What did you yell?

I said "Really Nick, really?!"

Yeah.

I wanted to hurt him, but I was being pulled back

in the room by him and pushed off by guards.

And what did he say?

He mumbled something, but he thought he said

he was sorry. Yeah.

He thought he hear him say that, I didn't.

He mumbled sorry.

(humming)

Yeah,

he's sorry he's in handcuffs.

He's sorry he's in the police station.

Florida Republicans Vote Down Assault Weapon Ban As Victims And Survivors Watch In Horror - Duration: 3:25.

On Tuesday of this week, lawmakers in the State of Florida voted on a measure that would

have allowed the body, the state legislative body, to consider a piece of legislation that

could have banned assault weapons in the State of Florida.

This piece of legislation was in response to the recent shooting in Parkland, Florida,

and survivors of that mass shooting were actually present at the State Capitol as this vote

took place.

But here's what happened, it didn't pass.

Do you know why?

Because republicans in the State of Florida who control the state house and the governorship,

and every other office in this state, voted against it.

Not against the actual bill, mind you.

They voted against a motion to consider the bill.

They're so beholden to the NRA that they wouldn't even bring the bill to the floor for consideration,

as these horrified students and parents looked on.

They, with that vote, said, "You know what, NRA money is more important than your lives,

children up here in the balcony watching us.

The NRA money is more important than keeping children safe.

So we won't even allow consideration on this piece of legislation because we don't care."

That was the message that they sent to these children and to the parents who lost their

children, and to every other victim of mass shootings across the country.

We don't care.

That is the only thing that we need to take away from this, not that there were procedural

votes, or that maybe they'll bring it up later.

Or that maybe Florida Governor, Rick Scott could come up with some kind of plan to protect

Florida schools.

Right now his plan is basically to station armed guards out there as if schools are now

prisons because he won't do anything about the guns.

But the bottom line is they don't care.

They want to solve the problem with more guns and who benefits when there's more guns?

The NRA, the gun manufacturers, and of course, the makers of teeny tiny coffins who get to

sell more of those when somebody goes in and shoots up a school.

Because maybe the guard was around at the other entrance, so the shooter just walked

in a different one.

Or maybe the guard was on his break, maybe he was having lunch, so that's when the shooter

struck.

Arming teachers, arming schools, having guards there is not going to solve the problem.

Getting these weapons off the street that are capable of firing 45 rounds every 60 seconds,

which is what the AR-15 is able to do, that is what is going to keep people safe.

If we do not take that step, if we do not ban assault weapons, if people like those

republicans in the State of Florida continue to vote these measures down and don't even

allow them to come up for consideration, this problem is going to continue unabated.

The only thing republicans will do is cash their NRA checks and then send us their thoughts

and prayers.

How to Build a Rocket to Mars - Duration: 2:24.

("The Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz" begins)

- [Amanda] It's pretty cool to be able to be part

of something so big.

We are making the next generation

of human space flight possible every day.

I'm Amanda Gertjejansen,

and we're in New Orleans at Michoud Assembly Facility,

and we're developing the technology to put a man on Mars.

(waltz continues)

- [Announcer] We have a liftoff.

Liftoff on Apollo 11.

- [Amanda] Boeing was a part of the Apollo days,

we were part of shuttle,

and now it's Space Launch System.

- [Chad] SLS is the world's biggest, most powerful

human-rated rocket ever to be built.

Our current mission is to take astronauts

deeper into space than ever before.

And this SLS vehicle is the platform

that we will do that with.

I'm Chad Bryant.

I'm the NASA Core Stage Manager for SLS.

The Core Stage is the central piece of the rocket.

It contains oxygen and hydrogen that mixes together

to form a very explosive combustion,

two million pounds of thrust,

that gets it off the pad and deeper into space

than ever before.

Going to Mars is not easy,

and so it requires a lot of detail in the design of the rocket.

It's all got to work together perfectly

in order to execute the mission.

We have human lives at stake.

All it takes is one part to fail,

and we can lose the mission.

You can't do anything of this scale

without tremendous amount of teamwork.

- [Amanda] Like, it's basically like this whole dance,

and we're the dance conductor.

You're excited to come to work everyday

because you're part of developing the technology

to put a man on Mars,

which would be an ultimate new frontier.

What Makes Celeste's Assist Mode Special | Game Maker's Toolkit - Duration: 14:05.

There are two things about games that I firmly believe

One.

Designers should be able to impose a singular vision on the player, if they so wish.

So, Dark Souls only needs one difficulty mode.

Dead Rising can put the entire game on a restrictive time limit.

And weapons can randomly jam in a game I shouldn't talk about anymore.

Decisions like these might be controversial, but if they're an integral part of the experience

that the developer is trying to create - then the player shouldn't feel like they're

entitled to be able to mess with this stuff through options, modes, and toggles.

Because that would screw with the developer's intentions, and could end up ruining the game

in the long run.

Those decisions were made for a reason, after all.

Okay. Two.

Players should be able to play games however they want.

Whether the player has a disability.

Or they're just not very good at the game.

Or they want to focus on the story.

Or perhaps they find one specific part of the game unenjoyable, like action segments

or timers, and it's ruining their experience with the rest of the game.

I think they they should be able to skip boss fights, turn off entire mechanics, and lower

the difficulty to whatever level they so desire.

I don't care, it doesn't affect my enjoyment, do what you want.

And. Yeah.

They're not exactly the most compatible opinions.

And it means I've struggled with conversations like, "Should Dark Souls have an Easy Mode".

I'm in favour of giving people more ways to play if they need them, but I also worry

that these options will lead to confusion about what is the proper way to play - and

inadvertently lead people away from having the best possible experience, that the designers

have tried to put forward.

But here's what I've come to realise.

And this is something I briefly touched on in that Dark Souls video, but have come to

better understand through games that have been released in the intervening months.

I think it comes down to communication.

I don't care how people play these games - as long as they understand what they're playing.

Understanding that there is this proper, intended way to play a game that the designers have

carefully created - and other, alternative modes, if people really want to play that way.

Now, throughout my childhood, this came in the form of cheat codes.

If you wanted to just mess around in Duke Nukem 3D without worrying about dying you'd

simply type in dncornholio to turn on invincibility and give yourself an infinite jet pack.

There was no misunderstanding about what was happening here.

This was cheating, and it was definitely not the right way to play.

But as a stupid 8 year old kid, god mode let me experience loads of first person shooters

for myself.

Same goes for user made mods, like the one that removes turn timers from XCOM 2, or the

wuss mode mod for horror game SOMA which stops enemies from being able to see you.

It's up to you if you install these things, and as they're third party modifications

you're under no illusions that you're messing with the intentions of the dev.

But cheat codes don't seem to exist anymore and were always hidden away in magazines and

schoolyard rumours.

And mods are largely exclusive to PC gamers, and exist outside of the game itself.

But in the last few years, we're seeing a growing trend of games where this sort of

stuff appears inside the games.

Developers are introducing things that fundamentally change the experience and might completely

go against the whole point of the game, but are being very careful to communicate their

intentions for who should use these options, and why.

I first saw this crop up in Darkest Dungeon: a game that is purposefully punishing and

sometimes completely unfair.

Now this game was released in Early Access, meaning that people could buy the game on

Steam while it was in an unfinished state, and watch as the developers tweaked the balance

and introduced new features.

Not every feature was well received, though: most notably the corpse system where dead

enemies stick around for a few turns, or until you destroy their body.

Something that can be pretty frustrating, when you can't target an enemy because a

corpse is in the way.

Now developer Red Hook Studios thought it was the right move for the game, but some

vocal fans disagreed.

And in the end, the studio decided to make corpses optional.

In a blog post on the matter, the developers said:

"We have been reluctant to add difficulty related options until now because focusing

on our intended version of the game has been our number one priority and our experiments

and changes during Early Access have all been in support of iterating on that."

"But it would be foolish for us to not consider the fact that the Darkest Dungeon community

is now big enough to include diverse groups, some of which would like to play the game

differently than we might have envisioned"

But what really stuck out to me, is how they implemented those options.

Because to turn off corpses, and make other gameplay changes like making it so retreating

from combat never fails, you have to go into the options and turn on a specific mode called

"Darkest Dungeon Config".

And when opening this menu, you'll see a pop up that specifically states "gameplay

settings as intended to be played.

Turning this OFF allows you to toggle the gameplay features below".

So by burying these options in a menu, and explaining to the player that this will change

the intended experience - Darkest Dungeon communicates to the player that this isn't

the game as it's meant to be played.

But ultimately, it's your call.

To me, this feels very different to turning on a game and having the absolute first thing

you see be a bunch of different modes that can fundamentally change how the game plays.

That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but it can be weird.

Like, how Fire Emblem Awakening gives you the option to turn off one of the key aspects

of the franchise: permadeath, before you've even started playing.

In comparison, here's how Tom Francis dealt with permadeath in his game, Heat Signature.

So, initially he was reluctant to get rid of it, saying "I'm not gonna completely

remove permadeath, it would be a totally different game, and one that generates less interesting

stories overall."

But then said "maybe that's not the right question.

It's not: would the game be better without permadeath?

It's: can we help the players who hate it?".

And so he made it optional in the game's first major update.

But, like Darkest Dungeon, he buried it in the options and explained its purpose with

a clear label that reads "we don't recommend doing this unless permadeath is really spoiling

the game for you - it leads to less interesting stories and less variety."

Tom says it was important to explain that this not a normal option, because "I don't

want players to feel like they're being asked to design how the game should work."

Oh. I like that. That's a good way to put it. I should steal that.

Another interesting solution came from SOMA developer Frictional who were inspired by

that wuss mode mod, which makes the player invisible to enemies, and turned it into an

official part of the game.

The in-game mode has slightly different enemy behaviours - they notice you, but they don't

hurt you - and it's now called Safe Mode.

Language is important, after all.

More on that in a bit

Frictional's Thomas Grip says he actually considered releasing this sort of mode at

launch, but chose not to, telling PC Gamer, "we skipped it because we wanted to focus

on delivering a certain kind of experience.

And we wanted to have a clear message on how exactly the game was supposed to work."

Specifically, the underwater world of SOMA needed to feel oppressive and scary, as you

sneak past nightmare robot monsters who want to eat your face for breakfast.

But the popularity of wuss mode was proof that some people really wanted to experience

SOMA's impactful storyline, but just couldn't deal with the stressful game mechanics.

And this gave Frictional the push to make the mode official.

The interesting part here, though, is the timing.

Safe Mode was added two years after the launch of the game.

Thomas says: "Releasing Safe Mode this late after release feels better, because we've

had time to ponder various aspects of the game's design to make it clear what kind

of experience it is.

If we did this at the time, it might have muddied the waters."

So, releasing options like this as a follow-up, instead of at launch, can help explain that

they're not supposed to be part of the main experience.

If you don't want to wait, another option might be releasing an easy mode as free downloadable

content which happened with a game called BUTCHER.

Once again, creating a disconnect from the main game helps communicate intentions.

But the game that really spurred me on to make this video, due to the care and consideration

of its optional mode, was Celeste.

This is a brilliant platforming game, full of charm and character, with top notch controls

and great level design.

And it's also hard.

Like really hard.

And you can make the game even harder with collectible strawberries, and secret B-side

and C-side levels.

Challenge is the whole point of the game, both mechanically and narratively.

But if you're finding the game too tough, there's this: assist mode.

In here you can completely alter the game, changing the speed, giving yourself infinite

air dashes, making Madeline invincible, and so on.

One of the game's developers, Matt Thorson told Waypoint:

"From my perspective as the game's designer, Assist Mode breaks the game.

I spent many hours fine-tuning the difficulty of Celeste, so it's easy for me to feel precious

about my designs.

But ultimately, we want to empower the player and give them a good experience, and sometimes

that means letting go."

Now the mode was inspired by the, uh, conversation surrounding Cuphead: a brutally tough run'n'gun

boss rush game inspired by rock hard Mega Drive titles from the 90s.

And Cuphead does offer help for newer players, in a Simple Mode, but the execution is pretty poor.

It pops up before every fight, right next to normal mode, and doesn't really explain

what it does.

The mode removes entire phases from boss battles, meaning you don't get to see all the amazing

animations on offer.

And beating a boss on simple mode doesn't actually count the fight as a win, meaning

you can't fight the final boss and see the game's ending if you don't finish every

level on normal mode.

It's not great.

And Celeste's assist mode is different in just about every way.

For one, you can play the entire game in assist mode if you want.

Nothing is kept away.

Not even achievements which I'm not entirely sure about, but hey.

Who cares about achievements anymore.

Two, it's up to the player exactly how they change things.

You're given very granular options.

You can slow the game down by 10 percent if your reaction times aren't quite what they

used to be.

Or you can skip entire chapters if they're not for you.

Three, the name.

At one point it was going to be called cheat mode, but the devs thought that felt judgemental.

They're Canadian.

But, I mean, you never know why someone wants to pick an easier setting, so calling it stupid

idiot baby mode or something is a bit of a dick move.

Instead they went with Assist Mode.

And, shortly after picking the name, Super Mario Odyssey came out, which has a mode with

the exact same name, and made the Celeste team feel like they made the right decision.

Assist Mode in Mario, by the way, is pretty awesome, too, because it let my four year

old nephew complete Odyssey all by himself.

Uh, anyway, back to Celeste.

Four.

The game's developers explain the intentions of assist mode with great care and attention,

before they let you turn it on.

Here's what they say:

"Assist Mode allows you to modify the game's rules to reduce its difficulty.

Celeste was designed to be a challenging but accessible game.

We believe that its difficulty is essential to the experience.

We recommend playing without Assist mode your first time."

"However, we understand that every player is different.

If Celeste is inaccessible to you due to its difficulty, we hope that Assist Mode will

allow you to still enjoy it."

This left me with no confusion about how Celeste works.

Assist Mode is not for me.

It might as well not exist, as far as I'm concerned, and I never used it when I played

and finished the game.

This isn't an easy mode, that I might switch down to if the game's kicking my butt.

It's an assist mode, that's just there for those who really feel they need it.

Now some games are, of course, completely open about letting you change the game in

any way you desire.

That can be a developer's vision, too, after all.

But some games are just better served by a more strict vision for how the game should

be experienced.

But that doesn't mean we need to make these games inaccessible to certain people, or completely

rule out the option of letting players customise or turn off certain aspects of the game.

It's just - to me - all about communication.

To make sure you're not presenting options that go against your vision, with the exact

same weight as the ones you actually want people to use.

But instead, using language, placement, and timing to make sure everyone understands what

these additional modes are all about.

You're giving people options if they need them, but you're not asking them to design

how the game should work.

I just made that up. I'm very clever.

So I do believe that game designers have a duty to protect players from themselves, by

not letting them turn off the more prickly mechanics.

But I guess I also believe that if designers give players good information, like the creators

of Celeste and Heat Signature did, then they should also trust that players will make the

right decisions for how they want to play.

That's where I'm at with this debate.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Hey, cheers for watching.

I'm going to do a rapid fire FAQ right now, okay?

1) Will you do another Game Jam this year?

Yes!

Ours was the biggest jam on itch.io in 2017, and I can't wait to do another one.

It will probably happen late summer, early autumn.

2) When is Boss Keys coming back?

You should hear about that in May, is my current plan.

3) When do you stream?

I stream every Wednesday at 8PM GMT, here on YouTube.

4) Do you have a Discord?

Yes, but it's only for Patrons.

5) Do you make games?

No, my background is in games journalism.

I'd maybe like to make a game one day but right now I'm super focused on the channel.

Okay, thanks! See ya!

Spencer Pratt's Hilarious Advice For His Son, Gunner - Duration: 3:01.

I'm Spencer Pratt, and this is advice for my son, the miracle baby, Gunner Pratt.

My advice, to Gunner, for social media is to post, post, post!

Keep that content coming, son!

Hopefully, for your father's sake, Snapchat is still a big thing when you can work your fingers

because currently, Snapchat has your dad on the official story discover page.

So, hopefully, son, you will be right next to me on an official story, at age seven.

My three goals for Gunner would be, one: to be the most followed baby on IG.

He's almost there.

Number two: The most viewed snaps for any baby on Snapchat.

The most subscribers on YouTube.

Hopefully Gunner does not have to hit on girls.

Hopefully they approach him because of his super-stardom, and

it's more of just process of elimination for him.

I see him more of how, like, a Brooklyn Beckham probably deals with girls in high school.

Just like, I'm gonna be here all year, girls.

He actually said that.

If Gunner is gay, I hope he falls in love with an amazing, successful, uhhh...

billionaire.

I want Gunner to treat Heidi the way Heidi treats Gunner, which is the most love ever,

and appreciate that he has the most loving mother in the history of the multiverse.

My advice for Gunner to get famous would be, just keep breathing, son.

I definitely would be fine with Gunner hanging out with Stormy, Webster, and in a perfect world,

Taylor Swift would hurry up and get married and have a kid so that Gunner can

hang out with Swift's child.

That would be, like, dream goals.

A.F.

If Taylor Swift had a baby...

if it was a girl I think it would be something like, Kate.

Boy, Tom.

Oh no! It wouldn't be Tom.

No, no, she had a bad experience with a Tom.

Like a Billy.

I feel like Taylor is gonna go super, just, relatable.

Hopefully paparazzi are still around when Gunner is old enough to use his phone.

I'm nervous they won't be, which is terrifying, but hopefully there will still be paparazzi

for my son to call and let them know where he's gonna be.

Gunner, you better watch all of this, son.

This is very important father advice.

And for other people with children, don't listen, because this is for Gunner.

You're kid is not gonna be on Gunner's level, so don't even try.

Thank you Cosmo, I love you.

'He Fell Into A Wrong Crowd,' Claims Former Classmate Of Accused School Shooter - Duration: 1:11.

You know, Ethan, you said that you've known him

on and off since the sixth grade,

and that there was a time that you saw something turn.

When I first met him, he was very talkative to me.

He was very friendly, and I considered him

as just one of my normal classmates.

I think from sixth grade on, his father had passed away

and he became very, very quiet in class.

I believe everyone thought that he was just in his grievance

but after a while, he fell into a wrong crowd

of troublemaking people, and they really encouraged

and motivated him to do troublemaking stuff as in like,

you heard of stories how he walked in front of a car,

he started screaming at the person,

he'd bother the teacher in any way.

Like, for example, he'd throw a pencil at her.

And you know that they would encourage him to do it,

and I think I saw it as a way he really wanted

to fit back in with everyone.

And eventually, I believe that he just became

what people would call him weird.

Was he bullied?

Disgraced Lindsey Vonn Just Sent Sick Message To Trump After Being DENIED WH Visit After HUGE Loss - Duration: 4:53.

Disgraced Lindsey Vonn Just Sent Sick Threat To Trump After Being DENIED WH Visit After

HUGE Loss.

The 2018 winter games weren't what US downhill skier and former gold medalist Lindsey Vonn

expected.

She paved her way to PyeongChang with hateful verbal attacks and demands for President Donald

Trump, proudly wearing a massive chip on her shoulder.

She arrogantly went into the Olympics wearing her anti-Trump attitude like a gold medal

and lost an actual medal, which was a first for the frontrunner in eight years.

She blamed the president for this massive defeat, despite bringing it on herself.

Rather than licking her wounds and slipping quietly out of South Korea, Vonn wasn't

done and decided to destroy her career for good by issuing a disturbing threat to the

president.

After spending months of her preparation time spewing divisive message about hers and our

president, proving herself to be a loser, she suffered a catastrophic loss in South

Korea last week she wasn't prepared for.

Rather than coming out as the winner, she came in fifth place and realized she was the

latest victim of the "Trump Curse."

Making matters worse, she didn't just lose the race she expected to dominate, the skier

who "took" the gold medal from Vonn that she was there to defend, was not a skier at

all.

Everything combined that contributed to her demise, was likely what led Vonn into addressing

her nemesis with a vengeful threat of what's coming now after her failed competition.

Gold medalist Ester Ledecka from the Czech Republic, who typically competes in snowboarding,

didn't even have a pair of skis in South Korea and had to borrow a friend's when

she entered into the Super-G race against Vonn on a whim and won.

It had to have been a massive blow to Vonn's ego who expected to be the winner of her sport

and use her status to perpetuate hate against the president of the country she was representing.

When that didn't happen, her hate for Trump must have gone into overdrive but she should

have learned her lesson.

Now, it's too late.

Vonn wasn't done with her hate tour against Trump and has more in store for the president.

According to the Daily Mail, despite the massive backlash she's received for trashing Trump,

she has threatened him not backing down in her pursuit to destroy him.

Daily Mail reports:

Lindsey Vonn has shot back at social media trolls who inundated her with abuse on Saturday

when she failed to medal and said her 'bad' performance was payback for her previous anti-Trump

remarks.

Before traveling to Pyeongchang to take part in the Winter Olympics, Vonn, 33, said she

would not celebrate any victory she might receive at the White House.

In a December 7 interview, she made her opinion of Trump and the current administration clear,

saying that she was not there to represent him or them but was there for the "people

of the United States."

"I hope to represent the people of the United States, not the president.

I take the Olympics very seriously and what they mean and what they represent, what walking

under our flag means in the opening ceremony.

I want to represent our country well.

I don't think that there are a lot of people currently in our government that do that,"

she said told CNN in December.

In the same interview, Vonn fired back "absolutely not" when asked if she would accept an invitation

to Trump's White House.

"Absolutely not.

Nope.

But I have to win to be invited.

No, actually, I think every US team member is invited, so no, I won't go," she said.

She later doubled down on them, saying the rest of the world no longer viewed America

as a country of hope.

In recent weeks, she has complained online about the lack of financial support the government

gives the Olympics and she has also called on Congress for tighter gun laws in wake of

the Parkland high school shooting

on Valentine's Day.

I Interned for Senator Rubio. Now I'm Begging Him to Act on Guns. | NYT Opinion - Duration: 2:10.

Dear Senator Marco Rubio, my name is Shana Rosenthal,

and I used to be your intern.

I listened to constituent calls day in and day out,

and logged their concerns, which were sent to you.

And now three years later, I'm one of those concerned citizens

pleading for change from you, our elected Florida official.

In my short lifetime of 21 years,

I've been within the vicinity of four mass shootings

where 152 people have been murdered or injured.

I was a mile up the street from Pulse Nightclub.

Eight months before that, Florida State University.

Five people at my local airport, inching closer and closer to Marjory

Stoneman Douglas my alma mater.

I've realized no one is safe.

I don't want this to happen any more.

I think we need to wait to make sure number one that most

of the laws — and I don't want to get into that debate

right now.

There's people watching this that

may have someone they love, then that's not

what they're interested at this moment.

Maybe they are.

It is your job as our elected official

to protect your constituents.

This isn't about party politics.

This is about human lives, lives of my friends,

my family, my community members.

I'm begging you to implement a systematic plan which

will end mass shootings.

Obviously, there's a debate in this country about what our gun

laws should be, and I've always said

if there's a gun law that could have prevented this

or any other instance, it's something we should definitely

consider doing.

You can begin by funding research

on gun violence and gun violence prevention

so we can at least begin to understand

the underlying crisis at hand.

Implementing stricter gun licensing,

extensive background checks, closing loopholes

in gun purchasing at gun shows, implementing

a buffer period between gun purchasing

and bringing the weapon home.

I hope you hear this message free of influence

from wealthy lobbying powers which impede

your senatorial judgment.

Senator Marco Rubio, I want you to prove me wrong.

I want you to prove that you're not just another wasted seat

and that you truly care about your constituents.

Digital Storytelling - Duration: 3:32.

Digital storytelling is a big buzzword right now.

Brands, both big and small, are embracing the two massive trends of online messaging

AND compelling video content.

And as a result, several things are happening.

One, we're getting a lot more visual content - which is great, but two… we're getting

a lot more visual content which MEANS, those videos are more likely to get lost in the

noise.

Essentially the old adage is no longer true - Content isn't king.

Content is like… contestants on the Bachelor the first night; there's a ton of them, they

all kind resemble each other, they're all named Lauren…

You may not watch the show, but it's not enough for your content to look beautiful in a proverbial

gown…

It needs something else to stand out.

Engaging Content is king.

And, it seems obvious right… like, make GOOD stuff.

But if you watched the 2018 Super Bowl like I did and, for the first time ever, found

yourself more excited about the GAME than the commercials (because oh my gosh were they

boring), it's clear that event the biggest brands with the most money are struggling.

So.

How can you - regardless if you have a $5million dollar budget or you use your brother-in-law

to edit the video together - how can you up your content game.

Obviously, I'm going to say storytelling - but more specifically - there is one simple shift

you should focus on making that will make all the difference.

For more compelling video content… take any current or future script and ask yourself….

"What is the feeling?"

--- What is the feeling this feature creates?

What is the feeling this information evokes?

When someone uses your product or service in the way it's intended… what do they FEEL.

Once you've identified the feeling… build a story around it.

As an example, I've embedded a video on this blog post that nailed this concept.

Apple.

When they released a holiday video several years ago about the iPhone, they could have

(and they have many times before ) focused on the features or the price of the phone.

Instead, in this particular video clip they told the story of what those features could

feel like when used in real life.

Now…

I'm not an overly emotional person - I can't watch this video without tearing up.

A few side notes - notice how apple focused on ONE family//one story all the way through

- do that.

Cramming a bunch of sound bites or a montage isn't going to set your content apart.

And second… don't just do it at the holidays.

Tell great stories in your videos all year - (but DO take your holiday decorations down…

You don't wanna be -that- guy).

Digital is the best thing that ever happened to Storytelling - freeing it from the campfire

doldrums.

However… storytelling is it's own brand of hero for the over-saturated digital age

where Content alone has been dethroned.

Create content that stands out, focus on the feelings you promise - not the features, and

tell THAT story.

Thanks as always for tuning in (send this to a content-friend in need!), and I'll be

back with more stories soon.

Dr Qi Jinshun Interview - NMT Discovery - Duration: 2:39.

And we found a very important finding is the cyclothiazide;

Cyclothiazide is a chemical compound,

and we had found this compound is a very, very useful chemical because the cyclothiazide can induce epileptic form

[Elora] Epilepsy

Epileptic discharge in the neuronal culture.

And that would cause a seizure, epileptic type

[Dr. Qi] Yes, seizure,

seizure-like activity in the cell culture.

So the cyclothiazide is a very important, very useful, cell model for epilepsy

for testing the epilepsy

[Dr. Qi] Yes, epileptic form activity

Wow. That's very interesting

And with that what did you discover about Alzheimer's disease

Oh my discovery? In our study we use NMT, we perform some calcium flux experiments

and we found the A beta, A beta is amyloid beta protein in Alzheimer's disease is especially deposited in the brain

And the A beta can induce some calcium influx,

Yes, you know that chronic calcium influx can induce into some calcium overload

because it is a long term effect.

So, the calcium overload may be the common path to the cell death

and in Alzheimer's disease it is a very, very important reason for the degeneration of the neuron.

so we found that calcium, the A beta,

amyloid A beta protein can directly induce the calcium influx

Another important side is not only the calcium influx

but also inhibit, inhibit the calcium efflux from inside to the outside of the cell.

Wow,

and that would cause the calcium

buildup in the cell
