History of Norway #2 - The Christian Kingdom and the Danes - Duration: 5:17.

At the end of the last episode, we talked about how the Vikings discovered North America

around the year 1000.

At the same time that was happening, the then Norwegian king, Olav Tryggvason, was the first

to attempt to abolish the Norse mythology and become Christianized, but, however, he

died in the Battle of Svolder in the same year.

This agenda was later revived by the king Olav Haraldsson, starting in 1015 when he

made the things pass church laws, destroyed pagan temples, built innumerous churches and

created an institution of priests.

His subjects feared that this would strip them of their powers, since many derived from

pagan traditions, and, as a result, they revolted.

Both sides met in the battle of stiklestad in 1028, where Olav was killed.

This made the church elevate Olav as a saint and made Nidaros, modern-day Trondheim, the

Christian center of Norway.

This made Norway fall into a personal union with Denmark and England under the Danish

king Cnut the great, leading to the formation of the North Sea Empire.

This rule was majorly unpopular in Norway, and, when Cnut died in 1035, the empire was

dissolved and Norway was once again independent.

This meant that, from 1040s until 1130, the country was at peace, which only ended that

year due to some unclear succession laws, which allowed all the king Sigurd's sons

to rule jointly, which lead to a civil war.

To prevent more succession crisis like this, the Archdiocese of Nidaros was created in

1152 and attempted to control the appointment of kings.

Inevitably, the church needed to take sides in the civil war, which eventually ended in

1217 with Håkon Håkonsson becoming king of Norway and finally introducing a clear

law of succession, where solely the eldest son inherits the throne.

Over the three centuries mentioned before, Norway saw its population almost triple and

saw the growing power of the king as in 1000 all the farmers owned their farms, but in

1300 around 70% of them were owned by the king, the church, or the aristocracy.

This happened because, in poor times, farmers borrowed money and weren't able to pay it

back so their lands were confiscated.

Nevertheless, this was nothing like the serfdom that was practiced in the rest of Europe,

since Norwegian farmers were free to leave and travel.

This new century is described as the Norwegian golden age, since peace was in charge and

there was a massive increase in trade, especially with the British Isles and Germany with the

Norwegian trade being controlled by the Hanseatic League.

Due to this, a trade center in Bergen was established.

But trade can be dangerous… and in 1349 the Black Death arrived in Norway and in less

than a year it had already killed a third of the population.

Other plagues also arrived and, by 1400, the population was already reduced by half.

This wiped out innumerous communities which resulted in an abundance of land, allowing

farms to practice animal husbandry.

This also led to less taxes being collected which weakened the king and the aristocrats'

power.

In 1380, The Norwegian king, died without a successor which led to, once again, the

country being ruled by the Danes, with Olaf Haakonsson as king of both kingdoms and, in

1397, under Margaret I, the Kalmar Union was established, with Sweden joining the personal

union.

She wagged innumerous wars against the Germans, which controlled the trade routes, and resulted

in a trade blockade to the union which led to an increase in taxation, and consequently

to the Engelbrekt rebellion in 1434-1436, which was led by the Swedish miner and nobleman

Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson and weakened the Danish power within the union, even though

they still held to majority of power.

Norway was still too weak to pull out of the union at this point.

Margaret continued her centralization policy since Denmark had more population than Sweden

and Norway combined, and, in order to soften the trade blockade hurting Denmark, she also

granted trade privileges to the Hanseatic merchants of Lübeck in Bergen, which hurt

the Norwegian economy even more.

Along the next years, Norway slipped ever more to the background under the Oldenburg

dynasty that now ruled the Union.

There was one revolt under Knut Alvsson in 1502 and in 1513 Norwegians got some affection

for King Christian II, who resided in the country for several years, leading to Norway

siding with Denmark during the events which led to Swedish independence from Denmark in

1523.

WHY AMERICA'S ZUMWALT CLASS WILL HAVE NO MATCH FROM RUSSIA OR CHINA IN NEXT 20 YEARS? - Duration: 6:25.

The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of the second ship of the Zumwalt-class USS Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001).

The vessel was manufactured by shipbuilder General Dynamics Bath Iron Works.

The U.S. Navy said in a statement,

"Delivery of DDG 1001 follows extensive tests, trials, and demonstrations of the ship's

HM&E (Hull, Mechanical and Electrical) systems including the boat handling, anchor and mooring

systems as well as major demonstrations of the damage control, ballasting, navigation,

and communications systems,"

The Zumwalt class of warships are the largest and technically most sophisticated guided-missile

destroyers of the US Navy.

The delivery was taken after the successful conclusion of acceptance trials conducted

by the U.S. Navy in 2018.

As per the roadmap, installation and activation of the guided-missile destroyer's combat

systems will be carried out in San Diego, California which will be its homeport.

The vessel is slated to be commissioned in January 2019.

In this video Defense Updates, analyzes why America's Zumwalt class will have no match

from Russia or China in next 20 years?

Let's get into the details.

Stealthy design is mostly attributed to warplanes.

But Zumwalt-class brings the stealth to a major warship.

Zumwalt-class destroyers feature unique wave-piercing tumblehome hulls.

The hull slopes inward from above the waterline which is very different from traditional hulls

which move outwards at a hard angle.

The design significantly reduces the radar cross-section since the slope makes the hull

return very less radar signal that is directed to it when compared to a traditional hull.

This makes the ship harder to detect and target.

There is no other frontline battleship which has this kind of revolutionary design.

USS Zumwalt is the first warship of US Navy to feature an all-electric propulsion.

The vessel consists of an all-electric drive with an Integrated Power System.

The system consists of two Main Turbine Generators, two Auxiliary Turbine Generators and two 34.6

MW Advanced Induction Motors.

The electric propulsion system has many advantages.

The system eliminates the need for the drive shaft and many other heavyweight components.This

not only enables easier maintenance but also reduces the acoustic signature of the warship

making it harder to detect by sonars.

Importantly the system generates 58 MW of additional reserved power which allows the

leg room for future upgrades like integrating Laser weapons and Railguns.

Zumwalt-class uses extensive automation.

For example, the vessels of this class have an automated cargo handling system.

The automation reduces crew complement that is required to run the ship.

The Zumwalt-class vessels require a minimum complement of 130 personnel which is, less

than half needed by similarly sized warships.

This will reduce operational costs as well as enable stocking more weapons which could

be crucial in a battle scenario.

The Zumwalt-class has 80 MK57 cells protected by Peripheral Vertical Launch System (PVLS).

The PVLS is designed to reduce the chances of the risk of loss of the entire missile

battery or even the entire ship in case of the magazine explosion.

The system consists of pods of VLS cells that are placed in the outer shell of the ship's superstructure.

The outer shell is built with thin steel whereas the inner shell has thick steel.

This design configuration directs any forces of explosion outwards, reducing the chances

of crippling damage.

The important part is that each of this cells is capable of accommodating 4 different missiles

which include SM-1, SM-2, and SM-6 missiles or Tomahawk land-attack missiles.

So, Zumwalt-class can go to a mission armed with different weapons payload depending on

the scenario.

SM1 is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM), with a secondary role as an anti-ship

missile.

It has a range of 167 km and speed of Mach 3.5.

SM2 is an upgrade of SM1 with an increased range of 185 km and better sensor.

SM-6 is meant of anti-air warfare with a range of 240 km and speed of Mach 3.5.

The SM-6 can also function as a high-speed anti-ship missile.

Tomahawk land-attack missile is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile.

It has a maximum range of 2500 km.

US Navy has given a contract to Lockheed Martine, the manufacture of Tomahawk to develop a Maritime

Strike Tomahawk which will play the role of the long-range anti-ship missile.

The Zumwalt-class also has two 155 mm caliber Advanced Gun System to execute long-range

artillery strikes at the range, more than100 km.

Currently, the guns are lacking ammunition.

The Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP) that were developed for the purpose was rejected because

of the very high cost of $1 million per shell.

The U.S. Navy is yet to select a replacement but it is already evaluating multiple options.

I'm a left-handed pitcher,

and I play both in the United States and in Japan.

My name is Monica Abbott.

Was that good?

My name is Monica Abbott.

I am 31 years old

and I am from Salinas, California.

There is a chance that Japan has to play the USA.

Then we will have to play against each other.

Since we are on the same team,

we don't play against each other usually.

One part of me says I don't want to play against Monica

but the other part says I want to test myself against her.

For it to come back,

the excitement around our sport is incredible.

Worldwide, everyone that has watched and played

knows that softball is back in the Olympics.

(SOFTBALL WILL BE REINTRODUCED IN THE UPCOMING OLYMPIC GAMES.

(IT IS ONE OF FIVE NEW SPORTS TO BE ADDED TO

(THE SPORTS PROGRAMME FOR TOKYO 2020.

(JAPAN DEFEATED THE USA 3-1 TO WIN THE GOLD MEDAL

I came over in Japan

after the 2008 Olympics.

My first year playing for Toyota was 2009.

And more than anything,

it gave me an opportunity to continue playing.

We do have a league in the United States,

but the league in Japan is definitely

the strongest in the world,

and it gave me a chance to continue my career.

The Red Terriers team was founded in 1948

as the women's softball team for Toyota City.

There are 12 teams in Japan's top league.

We are usually among the favourites for the championship

each year.

Monica has won a number of awards in the Japan league.

She has contributed greatly to the team

as well as bringing up the level of softball in Japan.

She is like a role model for her Japanese team-mates.

She is a big contributor to the team.

At first, I didn't really want to play in Japan,

because USA softball and Japan softball, we're big rivals,

and USA, we lost in 2008 Olympics.

It was hard, you know? We were upset

and I was kind of like against it at first,

but finally, I think, after I kind of thought about it,

talked about it with my family

and one of my really good friends, Natasha Watley,

and I just decided, you know, I'm going to come for one year,

and I'm going to just try and learn

from the Japanese softball players,

try and learn the culture and the things that they do well

in softball, so that, maybe, if I don't like it,

then I can go home.

But I liked it.

So I stayed and I've been here for nine years.

I think this is Monica's plate.

I have the dream to compete in Tokyo in 2020.

It'll be weird but it'll also be really fun

to play on the Olympic stage against team-mates

or people that have watched you play

in the Japan Softball League.

If you watch me play for Toyota for a while

and then come and watch me play for Team USA versus Team Japan,

they are my friends off the field, but on the field...

Got to get them.

That's of course the exception.

Talking about the bases.

The next is that the first throw is important.

The negative and positive of Japan softball is

kind of the same thing

and I would say that would be the time that they put in.

So, a lot of times our practices are really long

and it's a positive because there's a lot of opportunity

to get better and improve your skills.

But it also can be a negative because they're not always

as efficient as they should be

or maybe doing too much and then you lose focus

and maybe start creating bad habits

and you don't want that as a softball player.

But, for the most part, that's what I would say -

it's both a positive and negative, it's just

that management of practice time.

In my opinion, Monica is the best pitcher in the world.

Monica does the same practice routines that

everyone else does.

Regarding my coaching towards her,

she is not getting special treatment.

We just treat her as a regular team member,

which I think she appreciates.

I'll pitch ten more.

When I first came here,

communication was so hard

and I remember I had, like, this book

and I was trying to study and I would write down words

in Japanese and English every day that I would learn.

Practising with my team really helped

but, I tell you what, I got so good at charades,

like, I am awesome at trying to act out different,

you know, phrases and words, and just trying to,

trying to figure it out, just keep trying

with this little bit of Japanese that I knew

and the little bit of English that they knew.

And just finding our own common language on the team.

The highest level for women's softball is the Olympics.

We have these leagues, the Japan Softball League

and the National Pro Fastpitch League,

and the Italian Softball League,

we have all these professional leagues

but nothing is comparable to the Olympic stage.

The Olympics will come back to Tokyo again in 2020.

As a Japanese player, it will be amazing to host it.

I think the popularity of softball will rise

because of the Olympics.

I strongly believe Japan will win the gold medal.

USA will come in second.

We have this huge chance and opportunity to grow our sport

so that softball will stay in, not only for Tokyo,

but for 2024 as well, and beyond.

and now people have got a very view about RE bikes, but this bike has actually improved a lot

since the number of Royal Enfield sales in India is high, so the number of review are also more... even the good and bad both

when the Himalayan was initially launched I didn't like it so much and carried a very bad impression on the bike

and then I always stick to the Dominar being a much better bike then this..

but now the himalayan has changed a lot, its better now

this is comfortable till 100 speed

if you rev this hard, actually nothing much happens, it remains on the same speed

brakes are good and you will feel confident

at 100 you wont feel that much vibrations...

after 110 engine feels stressed, and after that you start feeling the vibrations, you actually loose confidence

highways 100 speed through out the day you can do comfortably, top of that would be difficult

the seat of this bike is comfortable, but since it is very soft, on long rides you will feel you are sitting on a frame.

You have to work little bit on the seat...

but if you stand on the foot pegs and ride, that is the best thing you will like on the bike

 His older brother Prince William was two years old when Harry was born. The 6ft 1 Prince has had an eventful year, having wed Meghan Markle in a star-studded ceremony at Windsor Castle in May

   The Beckhams, Amal and George Clooney and Tom Hardy all attended the glamorous but untraditional royal wedding, which featured an American preacher and black gospel choir

 Meghan, previously an actress on popular TV show Suits, met Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend

This year has also been a work-heavy one for Harry, as he split his time between mental health charity Heads Together and HIV and AIDS children's charity Sentebale

 The Duke of Sussex has also been recognised for his charitable efforts by the international community, being awarded the Golden Heart Award by German Charity Ein Herz für Kinder (A Heart for Children) in December 2010

  He has also been awarded the Distinguished Humanitarian Leadership Award by the Atlantic Council in 2012 and was granted the 2018 Founders Award by the Royal Canadian Legion for his role in the Invictus Games

 Charity work and a caring heart had been instilled in the Prince from his mother Princess Diana, known for her charity and compassion during her life

 Harry also founded the Invictus Games in 2014, which is multi-sport event for wounded, sick or injured armed service personnel to take part

 Sports featured include wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and indoor rowing

 Prince Harry has also fought for his country, having completed his officer training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in April 2006

 He was commissioned as a Cornet (second lieutenant) and served in the Blues and Royals - a regiment of Household Cavalry in the British Army

  In April 2008, the Prince was then promoted to lieutenant.  Despite a debate as to whether Harry should be allowed to fight on the front-line, the royal argued his case saying: "There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country

"He was allowed to enter front-line fighting in Afghanistan as a Forward Air Controller in Helmand Province

 This made Harry the first member of the royal family to serve in a war zone since his uncle, Prince Andrew flew helicopters during the Falklands War

 Harry ended active service with the army in June 2015.However, he has ever since been involved with the armed forces through his founding of the Invictus Games, as well as with honorary military appointments and other official engagements

 Should he take over, that may be enough for him to stay. But, so far, Express Sport understands United have no immediate plans to replace Mourinho with Zidane

 Speaking yesterday, Mourinho played down talk of Pogba leaving the club. "In this moment I'm completely in the dark," he said

 "The only thing that is clear for me is that the player never, never in all these days we are together, told me he wants to leave

 "Paul came back after the World Cup in the week before the start of the Premier League so we have been together for about two months or so and he has never told me that he wants to leave

 "So I can only comment on what is real for me, not in what I read, not in what I listen to

Latinx-a-thon Recommendations || Always Doing - Duration: 8:07.

Hey there, Kazen here, and welcome back to Always Doing.

Before I even get started talking about the subject of this video which is Latinx-a-thon,

I want to do some very quick housekeeping.

Namely, hello to all of my new subscribers!

I know how hard it is to hit the subscribe button on a channel that only has a video or two

so I really appreciate it.

who is so sweet and tweeted about my first wrap up video.

Upon which, I nearly died.

If you don't know Olive she's an amazing Booktuber.

She covers all kinds of books but with an emphasis on nonfiction and books about Russia.

Her latest video about unconventional ways to choose your next boook

is particularly amazing. So go check her out.

To the task at hand. Today I'm going to be talking about

my first ...athon! Readathon. Yeah.

In the United States Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15th to October 15th.

I always thought the timing was a little weird, but it turns out there's a good reason.

Five Latin American countries declared independance on September 15th

and three more the week after that. So the timing is actually perfect.

The readathon is being hosted by Andrea at bookramble,

Jocelyn at yogi with a book,

Priscilla at Bookie Charm,

and Yvette at BookCave.

I'll have all of their info down below.

It runs from September 22nd to September 29th

and while the only requirement is that you read a book with a Latinx author or main character

there are five challenges to go along with it.

The first challenge is Voices.

Read a book with an Afro-Latinx or Indigenous main character or author.

The second challenge is Pride.

Read a book with a queer Latinx main character or author.

The third challenge is Roots.

Read a book with a Latinx author or main character that has been translated

or that features more than one language.

For example, if there's Spanish phrases sprinkled throughout the text.

The fourth challenge is Heritage.

Read a book by an author from a non-Spanish speaking Latinx heritage or country.

And the last challenge is Latinidad, which is reading the group book

Itzá by Rios de la Luz. I love that they chose an independant book. It looks really good.

Today I have some recommendations for you so you can get some ideas

for your own Latinxathon, or maybe the book bingo or just Hispanic Heritage Month in general.

I'll be telling you which prompts they cover, so let's go.

First is a book that I mentioned in my New to Booktube Tag video.

My very first video, because I love it that much. And that is

A Simple Story: The Last Malambo by Leila Guerriero, translated by Francis Riddle.

In it Guerriero looks at a dancing competition in Argentina

and what drives people to do it when the number one prize is being forced to retire.

The writing is beautiful and it clocks in at a mere 120 pages

so it's a quick read, always appreciated during a readathon.

The book is translated so it counts for the Roots challenge.

Next is a book that I want to see getting so much more attention than it has been.

And that is Anger is a Gift by Mark Oshiro.

It's a YA contemporary with an Afro-Latinx main character

And by a Latinx author. Oh!

The author is also queer and the main character is also queer so this counts for both Pride and Voice.

And before I start some trigger warnings for police brutality and anxiety.

Six years ago Moss' father was murdered by police.

And that, along with a bunch of media attention, has left him with anxiety which includes panic attacks.

He's a high school sophomore now and he and his very diverse group of friends

Seriously, there's pretty much all the rep within this group of friends. It's amazing.

They find that they're being treated like criminals within their own school.

Things escalate, things go badly,

you get your heart torn out, you get your heart revived,

but along with that and after that there's the message of hope.

And the power of protest, and the power of teenagers.

And women in making change. And the power of love.

It's a powerful book.

that you should really check out.

Next I have a romance for you.

It's Take the Lead by Alexis Daria.

Daria is Puerto Rican and the heroine is also Puerto Rican.

Our hero is Stone. He has his own reality show in the Alaskan wilderness with his family

The kind of show where they're in the middle of nowhere and they look at the family relations

how you survive in the middle of the woods, etc. etc.

Gina is a professional dancer on the reality show.

So Stone comes to the show to give his own show a boost

and they end up getting paired together.

One thing I liked about this book is because they're both reality show stars

They both know how Hollywood works.

And they know that the producers are going to try and trap them into a "showmance".

And that they want to avoid doing that while also slowly falling in love with each other.

It's fun! You have some glitz, you have the dancing, you have some forced proximity,

there's family secrets and a bit of crazy.

Fun crazy, not too crazy. Just fun crazy.

And if you read it and end up liking it there's a second book in the series called Dance with Me

also with a Puerto Rican heroine.

And at the end of the second book there's a hint of a third one that would be

a female/female relationship that I just want.

and there's plans for it yet as far as I know but

please, please, please, Ms. Daria, please.

There are some Spanish phrases sprinked here and there so you can count this towards Roots.

And the last book I have your guys is kind of a get out of jail free card.

It's something you probably won't read anything like it ever again

and it reads very quickly for reasons you will soon see.

So even though it wasn't my favorite book I'm glad that I read it.

And who knows, it may be just the thing for you. And that is

The Subsidiary by Matías Celedón, translated by Samuel Rutter.

Our protagonist is an employee at a subsidiary for a very large

Latin American company. All of a sudden the power goes out

and over the loudspeaker they're told not to move

from their desks until further notice.

And he only has the stuff at his desk, which is several rubber stamp sets

and a couple other office supply-type things.

And he uses those to tell the story.

So like you can see on the cover, there's a stamp block, movable text, that you can put on there.

And that's how the story is told. I thought it was an innovative way to construct the narrative.

And because there's only a sentence, maybe two, on each page

you can flip through it quite quickly.

Now, it wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

The ending left me unsatisfied. I felt that he could go so many

more and deeper places, even with this contrained set of

rules, kind of, that he placed on himself. The author did.

But I'm still glad I read it. It's innovative.

So if you have some spare moments, or there are only a few hours left

in the readathon and you want to try to get one more book in, this is an option for you.

So there we have it! My recommendations for Latinx-a-thon.
