Fear, Itself • S04E04 • TPN's Buffy Guide - Duration: 8:00.

Fear, Itself is the second Halloween episode of Buffy, written by fan favorite David Fury.

Like Ethan's episode it relates in some way to chaos, here how fears run amok create

disorder.

And like Ethan's episode, Fear, Itself is just flatout excellent.

It's pumpkin carving season and the gang is all together for a night of frivolity that

Buffy isn't feeling.

Xander got the wrong scary movie from the video store and Willow and Oz recommend a

frathouse party they forgot to invite him to.

Buffy excuses herself and wanders home alone across an empty Sunnydale and a demon jumps

out to scare her.

"What the hell is wrong with you lady?"

You know what...demon or no that kid deserved to be punched in the face.

Startling isn't funny.

The next day Willow is telling Buffy about all the things she can do magically now but

that she feels like she's plateaued and Oz says he hopes Buffy doesn't encourage

her.

Little odd that Willow calls Oz Brutus for just not wanting her to hurt herself.

That was a serious reference.

To oversimplify, Brutus killed Caesar for fear that Caesar was accumulating too much

power.

Buffy spots Parker and decides she's not hungry, heading out.

She also tries to dodge out of the party, saying she has to patrol on Halloween.

"Happy Halloween…"

Giles, now with copious amounts of time, has decided to pursue American traditions his

Watcher duties never gave him time for.

"IT'S ALIVE…"

At the upcoming frathouse party the brothers are setting up and one of them has found a

special book with a creepy symbol in it he thinks will spice things up.

Anya shows up to try and figure out why Xander hasn't called her after she told him she

was over him.

"Well that's the funny thing about me.

I tend to hear the words people say and accept them at face value."

Xander invites Anya to the party and she inadvertently plays on his current insecurities by being

brutally honest.

Not out of any attempt to harm of course.

Anya just doesn't have another speed.

Buffy attempts to speak to Ms Walsh about why she's missing class (a bit of the Parker

blues) and Walsh bypasses her completely saying class is her responsibility and she needs

to solve problems are on her own time.

At the frat the spooky symbol is now on the floor and Oz, a supernatural creature of the

night, cuts himself and accidentally adds the missing ingredient.

That night Buffy goes as Little Red Riding Hood, Xander as Bond, and Willow as Joan of

Arc.

At the frat house, things have turned into total chaos as terrifying visions have begun

manifesting themselves.

Inside Willow runs into a fake web and a moment later sees an actual tarantula on her shoulder.

A moment later they are attacked by bats, which then turn back to rubber.

The gang gets split up by the horrors and each of them are forced to experience their

own personal worst fears.

Anya, dressed in full on furry bunny outfit witnesses the frat house lock people in and

goes to seek Giles' help.

Giles finds his way into the frat.

"We need to make a door."

Giles finds the group and figures out that what's going on is the monster Gachnar is

consuming enough fear to summon himself into the mortal realm.

Buffy inadvertently summons Gachnar into our realm.

Turns out they had nothing to fear but fear itself.

"That's your costume."

- "Bunnies frighten me."

It's a brilliant little episode that is both self contained and deeply informing of

the characters.

I love that the whole idea of the episode is kind of a riff on the end of Ghostbusters.

Gozer the Gozarian has brought the traveller to destroy the earth, which will take the

form of whatever they imagine.

Everyone empties their head but Ray can't help but think of,

"It's the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man."

So the things that the characters are most afraid of are manifested in the real world.

Xander is afraid his lack of both direction and super-powers makes him invisible and irrelevant

to the group.

He picks James Bond for his costume, as super human a character as you can get without actually

having superpowers.

Oz is afraid he won't be able to control his inner wolf, and because of that he might

actually harm Willow.

And Willow is afraid she might not actually be able to control her magic, which has become

a defining part of her identity.

The bit she believes shows everyone she is remarkable, and not just Buffy's sidekick

in geeky clothes.

And she is also very afraid that Oz will leave her.

"Oz...don't leave me."

I love love everyone's costumes as well.

Willow going as Joan of Arc, who was burned at the stake is perfect.

Buffy dressed as Little Red Riding Hood is a nice callback to helpless.

Of course the highlight of them all is Anya's turn as a bunny.

I've heard Anya accused a few times of being the comic relief brutally honest character

that took the departed for LA Cordelia's place.

And while there is some of that here I believe there IS something fundamentally different

about their two characters.

The intent of their brutal honesty, which informs their very different characters.

Cordy is wicked smart.

Incisive.

She doesn't beat around the bush because she just doesn't have time for that.

Love her or get the hell out of her way.

Anya just doesn't have another speed.

Anya was made a demon, not taken over by one.

Her transformation to human again is completely starting her from scratch.

It's been so long since she's been human that simple concepts are going to need to

be relearned.

In a lot of ways she is a child trapped in an adult body.

"They all ran away from you.

They always will.

Open your heart to someone.

But don't fret little girl.

You're not alone."

Which brings us to Buffy's fear.

Abandonment.

Buffy's moping about Parker is a little frustrating, until you take into account that

this is not actually just about Parker.

Notice the word "all" here.

She's unpacking baggage that she's been carrying for a long time.

I highlighted the ways in which Angel related to this in the previous video but here we

see her neuroses around love and men go all the way back to her father.

"Your father loved spending time with you."

- "Not enough I guess."

When she is unable to sort out the details of her private life Buffy often hides behind

the Slayer mantle, as she does in trying to avoid the party.

And her fear of that maybe being all there is for her manifests in the basement of the

frathouse.

"No matter how hard you fight you always end up in the same place."

Maybe there is nothing for her in life but monsters and the dead.

Perhaps to be the Slayer is to be nothing but a killer.

If you're reading ahead then you might wonder if some of the coming events in the series

undercut a bit of the philosophy here.

I don't think so.

Perhaps some of our fears are valid, justified, warranted, even precognitive.

But there is something to keep in mind.

In the intervening time since I wrote the first draft of this video, I stumbled on a

fascinating video on the NYtimes.com which I have linked to in the description.

Two Swedish documentary filmmakers wanted to make a film about people facing a difficult

situation.

They found 67 participants who had never been on a high dive before and paid them all to

climb a 30 foot diving tower, look over the edge, and then to jump or to not.

The filmmakers then turned on the cameras and...watched.

I was so struck by what a simple analog this was to so many choices in life.

To ask out a crush or to not.

To go to an interview.

To step out onstage.

To take responsibility.

Whether you take the plunge or turn around to go and make a different decision, in every

case it is the space between those choices that is the worst of it.

The fear is the worst of it.

There is no torture like the precipice.

No anxiety like the icy grip of the unknown.

And some spend their whole lives here, paralyzed to inaction by the fear.

Confinement in that space between has accounted for so much of the anxiety I have suffered

in my own life.

And for some reason, it took the longest time to come to grips with the fact that anxiety

has only one antidote.

India Aims to Export Its Home Grown Multi-Role Helicopter to 40 Countries - Duration: 2:43.

India's Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar has unveiled the full scale model of Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH) at 11th edition of Aero India in Bengaluru. India's government owned company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited aims to indigenously develop 12-ton class IMRH with service ceiling of around 20,000 feet, 3,500 kg payload and a seating capacity of 24.

Company has also planned to develop dedicated naval version of the helicopter. Indian firm claims that IMRH will be powered by yet to be identified twin engines and will have state of the art mission systems to meet the Utility and Armed Roles of Indian Armed Forces.

"Besides the domestic defense orders, HAL will target export orders, aiming to replace the ageing fleet of similar class of helicopters that are operational in more than 40 Air Forces around the world," says official of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd on Tuesday. HAL hopes to have the first flight of IMRH in six to seven years. However, design and development of IMRH will only commence once armed forces put up their demand.

India needs more than 400 multi-role helicopters having different versions. HAL claims that IMRH will have high strategic roles in Tactical Troop Transport, Casualty evacuation, Under Slung Load, Combat Search & Rescue, Anti Surface Operations, Off-shore Operations, VIP/VVIP Transport and Air Ambulance. "The Army/IAF version will have a significant hovering and payload capability especially at high altitude," reads a statement released by HAL.

Sources say that IMRH can be good substitute for the Russian built Mi-17 and also fit the Navy's requirement for medium-lift helicopters.

Kim Jong-nam's black sheep legacy - Duration: 2:21.

Kim Jong-nam,... as the eldest son of the former leader Kim Jong-il, was arguably the

natural heir to the family's succession of power.

But he spent much of his adult life in exile and it was his half-brother Kim Jong-un who

became the leader, ruling with an iron fist since 2011.

Our Kwon Jang-ho explains how that came to be... and what this incident means for the

family dynasty.

Who was Kim Jong-nam?

Although he was Kim Jong-il's eldest son, he was considered the black-sheep in the Kim

family dynasty.

Born May 10th, 1971 in Pyongyang, he was the son to Kim Jong-il and his mistress Song Hye-rim.

He was expected to be the first in line to be leader of North Korea, but events took

a different turn.

Kim Jong-nam is thought have spend much of his childhood in Pyongyang living like a prince,

but during his teenage years, he spent time studying in Switzerland where he reportedly

learnt about democracy.

He's said to have tried to convince his father to reform North Korea too, and that's when

he started to fall out of favor with his father.

In May 2001, he was caught trying to enter Japan with his son and two women using a fake

passport to visit Disneyland Tokyo.

The much-publicized incident is said to have deeply embarrassed his father, cementing Kim

Jong-il's negative view of his eldest son.

Kim Jong-nam was essentially exiled from North Korea thereon and spent much of his time in

China and Macau, and eventually his half-brother Kim Jong-un was named heir-apparent in 2010.

Although rarely appearing in public, he would speak to reporters occasionally and make critical

comments about his brother and the regime.

There's currently no evidence of Kim Jong-un's involvement in his sibling's death, but suspicion

is high.

It's being considered a continuation of the purges that the leader has carried out since

he came to power six years ago.

He has so far reportedly executed at least 140 senior officials, including his uncle

and mentor Jang Sung-thaek in 2013.

Whether Kim Jong-nam would have posed a threat to Kim Jong-un is unclear.

Although he showed no signs of ambition to challenge his younger brother, Kim Jong-nam

had represented a question-mark of legitimacy and remained a potential thorn in the leader's

side.

Kim Jong-nam's death has set off a wave of speculation about the motive behind the killing

and the potential impact on the regime.

Connie Kim reports.

Reports of the death of the North Korean leader's half-brother Kim Jong-nam have come as a shock,

raising questions about the motive.

There are reports that Kim Jong-nam was considered a potential threat to Kim Jong-un, who appears

to be cementing the cult of personality around him going into his sixth year in power.

There are also reports that China has been supporting Kim Jong-nam financially, in case

of an emergency in which Kim Jong-un would need to be replaced.

Some reports also say that Kim Jong-nam may have been involved in recent political changes

within the regime.

Leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to root out corruption starting late last year and in his New Year's

speech this year.

In addition, some North Korea watchers say that the dismissal of the regime's spy agency

chief this month may have been related to the death of Kim Jong-nam.

The effect of Kim Jong-nam's death on the regime isn't expected to be great, given that

he was not an official.

But the general consensus is that it is likely to contribute to strengthening the dictator's

reign of terror.

"The news about Kim Jong-nam will be put out either through loudspeaker broadcasts or the

radio, where senior officials are sure to feel their lives are threatened by the fact

that Kim Jong-un killed a family member.

Kim Jong-un could strengthen his grip on power in the short term, but it will weaken his

power base in the long term and it could mark the beginning of the end of the regime."

The South Korean government says it is waiting for the Malaysian police to complete their

investigation into the incident,... but if it's confirmed that Kim Jong-un ordered his

half brother's death, he will be unable to avoid international condemnation.

Kim Jong-nam's death proves brutality of regime if Kim Jong-un involved: Hwang - Duration: 2:00.

The South Korean government is taking stock of the situation following Kim Jong-nam's

sudden death.

Chairing a National Security Council meeting Wednesday,...

Prime Minister and acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn said the incident was gravely serious.

He also ordered the government and the military to stay on guard for a possible follow-up

provocation by Pyongyang.

South Korea's acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn says Kim Jong-nam's suspicious death is a

'grave' incident... and a situation Seoul has to monitor carefully.

"We must thoroughly monitor the current situation in North Korea and prepare for every possible

scenario, including an additional provocation.

If it's confirmed that Kim Jong-un was behind the murder of Kim Jong-nam, it's another clear

indication of the regime's brutality and inhumanity."

Hwang added that Seoul should intensify international cooperation to turn the screw on Pyongyang

and eventually bring about change in the North.

At a trilateral meeting with the ruling party, the government and the presidential office,

Hwang also renewed his condemnation of North Korea's recent ballistic missile test, calling

it an unacceptable provocation.

"The South Korean government is warning North Korea that, if the Kim Jong-un regime does

not give up its nuclear and missile ambitions, it will soon take the path to self-destruction."

Hwang also vowed to strengthen the annual South Korea-U.S. joint drills set for next

month - to an unprecedented level, reaffirming the allies' commitment to countering North

Korea.

big of a surprise that South Korea ranked tenth in the world in terms of defense spending

last year.

In its Military Balance report released on Tuesday,... the International Institute for

Strategic Studies found that Seoul's defense budget for 2016 was roughly 34 billion U.S.

dollars.

As with previous years,... the United States was head-and-shoulders above the rest,...

spending more than 600 billion dollars on defense in 2016.

China was second with 145 billion dollars.

Behind the world's two superpowers were Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.

The report added that defense spending focused on Asia last year was one-point-three times

more than Europe.

N. Korean sailors to be repatriated upon request after rescue - Duration: 0:41.

The South Korean Coast Guard has rescued five North Korean sailors from a boat sailing adrift

in the East Sea near the Dokdo islets earlier this week.

The unification ministry confirmed today... that the crewmen were picked up on Monday

morning, after their vessel experienced engine failure.

The ministry says all five sailors have asked to return to North Korea.

Normally their boat would have been fixed and sent back, but officials said the vessel

was beyond repair, so they said they will be in touch with Pyongyang through Red Cross

communication channels to repatriate the crewmen at the neutral border village of Panmunjeom

on tomorrow.
