Head of U.S. Special Ops says that America�s government is in �unbelievable turmoil�

Army Gen. Raymond �Tony� Thomas, the head of US Special Operations Command, bemoaned

the �unbelievable turmoil� racking the United States government during a symposium

in Maryland on Tuesday.

�Our government continues to be in unbelievable turmoil.

I hope they sort it out soon because we�re a nation at war,� Thomas said in his speech,

according to CNN.

Although he didn�t specify what �turmoil� he was referring to, he clarified when later

asked about his comments, saying, �As a commander, I�m concerned our government

be as stable as possible.�

The Special Operations troops include Navy SEALs and the Army Green Berets, both of which

have become increasingly prominent in military operations since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist

attacks and which are equally prominent in our national folklore.

While it is unclear what Thomas was referring to, it is quite possible that he was discussing

the war that has been ongoing between the so-called �deep state� and the Trump administration.

Critics have accused America�s intelligence agencies of trying to promote an anti-Russian

agenda and punishing both President Trump and various administration advisers with targeted

leaks intended to discredit them.

There are also reports that members of intelligence communities, convinced that the Trump administration

has been compromised by the Russian government, has withheld information from the president

in order to avoid having it leaked out.

Naturally, the most recent manifestation of the poor relationship between Trump and the

intelligence community were the events leading up the resignation of former national security

adviser Michael Flynn.

Although Flynn initially claimed that he had not spoken with Russian ambassador Sergey

Kislyak about President Barack Obama�s sanctions, intelligence leaks later revealed that he

had in fact done so, prompting his resignation.

The Oxford Martin School is based at Oxford University in the UK and has set up the �Oxford

Martin Commission for Future Generations� (OMC). Bringing together international leaders

from government, business and civil society, the OMC aims to address the growing short-term

preoccupations of modern politics and business and identify ways of overcoming today�s

gridlock in key international negotiations.

The OMC�s website says that this diverse group of highly respected global leaders has

called for a radical shake-up in politics and business to deliver progress on climate

change, reduce economic inequality, improve corporate practices and address the chronic

burden of disease.

Any institution committed to radically shaking up politics and business should be both willing

and able to call to account powerful private interests and not be compromised by ideology

or conflicts of interest. However, campaigner Dr Rosemary Mason wrote to the OMC last year

to state that such things do appear to be undermining its stated aims. She expressed

concern that OMC commissioners have allegiances with various global corporations that could

undermine the neutrality and credibility of the commission. She went on to name certain

individuals and noted their links to corporate power.

For example, there is Sir John Beddington, Professor of Natural Resources Management

for the OMC, and his position on the debate about genetically modified (GM) food and crops.

Beddington was made Chief Scientific Adviser to the British Government in 2007. In 2012,

he declared his faith in GM technology. Mason quotes him as saying, �And among those scientific

wonders, the use of genetically modified crops has a particularly rich potential� Just

look at the problems that the world faces: water shortages and salination of existing

water supplies, for example. GM crops should be able to deal with that.�

A recent report says that during his visit to Australia, Beddington told ABC Rural news

that politicians around the globe are ignoring the science relating to GM for the sake of

short-term political opportunism.

He is quoted as saying, �If a politician completely ignores scientific advice, then

they�re in danger of making policy decisions which will prove to be unutterably wrong.�

Beddington went on to argue for more rapid and sensible responses from policies that

engage science and stated, �There is a movement in Europe which is just against any genetically-modified

plant used for food [and] that is so na�ve. There�s no doubt in the developing world,

plants can be modified to be resistant to drought or insect pests and that is going

to be very, very important moving into the future.�

He also claimed that the aim of gene editing is to produce plants that are resistant to

droughts, pests and diseases, while boosting yields, which would be needed to feed a growing

world population.

Beddington told ABC Rural that there was approximately two billion people experiencing malnutrition

and these people either lack sufficient levels of nutrients needed for proper development

or are eating too much poor-quality food. With 25 per cent of children dying in the

first few years of life, he said that children were being robbed of their social and economic

potential. In an era of so-called �anti-science�, he argued it was more important than ever

that scientist ensured their relevancy within society.

Beddington concluded by saying:

What is sensible is to insist that this is the scientific evidence, you may not like

it, but that is the evidence. Taken at face value, much of what Beddington

says might seem quite reasonable: a growing global population requires food, GM based

on scientific evidence can provide it and na�ve resistance, which is not based on

science, is holding back the technology�s potential.

It�s a line of thought that we have heard many times before from proponents of GM. The

purpose here is not to go over old ground and repeat what I or others have written in

recent articles that take issue with some of Beddington�s views, especially regarding

the science of GM and his wholly erroneous claims about critics holding anti-scientific

views.

The wider context: scientists and development

However, the issue of �naivety� is worth exploring. If there is any naivety around,

it is not to be found within the ranks of those who question or oppose GM. In fact,

the type of views Beddington expresses are driven by naivety or even worse: a failure

to appreciate the reality of hunger, malnutrition, poverty and the nature of a global system

of food and agriculture that is tied to corporate power.

Scientists are fond of telling everyone that GM technology can fix the world food problem.

This assumes there is a �problem� as they define it (food shortage); but any problem

that does exist has less to do with the world�s inability to feed itself and more to do with

political issues related to food distribution, access to land, inequality and so on as well

as inappropriate models of economic and social development that have adversely impacted indigenous

agriculture and regional food security.

As a technology, GM is but a tool. There may indeed be a need for it in certain situations,

given proper testing and analyses of specific contexts and circumstances. However, you can

roll out a technology and it can have disastrous consequences because of the context within

which it operates. And you can roll out that technology knowing it will have many adverse

effects but it will be highly beneficial to those who financially profit from that roll-out.

We just have to look at the outcome of GM technology since GM crops were commercialised

over 20 years ago. Has it reduced pesticides use? No. Has it increased yields? No. Have

companies who control the technology and its associated proprietary inputs (e.g. Roundup/glyphosate)

made a financial killing? Certainly (see this, this and this).

Some 20 years of GM indicate that statements about the efficacy and benefits of GM are

based more on wishful thinking than actual reality. GM has been dominated by giant transnational

corporations who have used the technology to grow a select handful of crops, which by

and large have been used to feed people in richer countries, not poorer regions where

hunger and malnutrition persists. Moreover, GM has been integral to a system of food and

agriculture in the US that fuels obesity, bad health and monolithic diets that are nutritionally

poor. Also, in the US, farmers are squeezed and kept afloat by taxpayer subsidies so that

Monsanto, Cargill and the likes of Wal-Mart can rake in massive profits.

People in the US now have a diet dominated by GM corn and soy. And where GM has been

grown outside of the US, food security has been undermined, crops are grown for animal

feed to be exported to rich countries and the planting of GM has led disease and illness

places such as Argentina.

GM is being used by vested interests who seek to irreversibly alter the genetic core of

the world�s food and rake in massive profits. This is why GM is not just about science � indeed,

science might be a minor issue given the overall context � especially for poorer countries.

If we are to take India as an example, the Green Revolution was promoted by US corporations

and interests that uprooted what was a highly productive system of agriculture. That system

offered a diverse diet, and system was responsive to local climate and soil conditions. What

we now have is drought, degraded soil, less diverse diets, nutritionally deficient crops

and farmers placed at the mercy of rigged global trade rules as well as a whole range

of other problems.

To say that GM will rectify problems related to drought, yields or climate change fails

to acknowledge the damage already done and that GM � the way it is to be rolled out

by foreign corporations � is only going to exacerbate things: a damaging corporate-controlled

chemical treadmill followed by similar; this time a corporate-controlled biotech treadmill.

The Green Revolution was never designed to �feed the world�. The same is true for

GM. Such rhetoric is designed to mask the motives based on self-interest, geopolitics

and profit.

In India, the World Bank and US companies are driving the development agenda. The push

to drive at least 400 million from the land and into cities is already underway at the

behest of the World Bank: a World Bank that India is seriously indebted to and a World

Bank that is, under the guise of �enabling the business of agriculture�, committed

to opening up economies to corporate seeds and agrochemicals and securing global supply

chains.

The drive is to entrench industrial farming and displace the current productive system

with one suited to the aims of foreign agribusiness and retail interests. This entails commercialising

the countryside and replacing small-scale farming � the backbone of food production

in India (and globally), which is more productive than industrialised agriculture, more sustainable

and capable of producing more diverse, nutrient-dense diets.

The ongoing issue to commercialise GM mustard in India is part of a push that seeks to restructure

India to benefit foreign capital. By touting for GM, many scientists are (inadvertently)

lobbying for a particular model of development. That development agenda regards the peasantry,

small farms and India�s rural-based traditions, cultures and village-level systems of food

production/processing as backward, as an impediment to �progress�. It regards alternative

approaches to agriculture that have been advocated by numerous high-level reports as a hindrance:

approaches that would in effect build on and develop the current rural infrastructure and

not eradicate it.

Do people who promote GM without addressing the issues raised above really think that

technology is a silver bullet? Do they think it is the key way to feeding the world � or

to feeding an India that is already self-sufficient in key foodstuffs and could be more so if

it were not for the effects of politically motivated WTO rules and World Bank directives?

By not addressing any of this, can scientists who tout for GM to the detriment of all else

be regarded as �objective�? To dismiss all of the issues raised in this article and

to ignore the model of corporate power that GM is wedded to demonstrates either gross

naivety or an (unwitting) ideological allegiance to the political dogma of neoliberalism.

Rosemary Mason raised a valid point: allegiances to corporate power can and do undermine any

chance of neutrality and credibility. Science certainly has a role to play in helping to

deal with food and agriculture issues. But the problem is that some scientists feel a

need to promote a technological innovation without looking at (or even wanting to look

at) the wider context. By doing so, they fail to appreciate that the answer to poverty,

hunger and malnutrition first and foremost lies in addressing

the context and in not blindly promoting technology.

The independent counsel dedicated to the massive political scandal linked to the president...

express renewed determination in getting to the bottom of Samsung's ties to the case.

They vow to indict the conglomerate's heir-apparent who is now under arrest.

Hwang Hojun starts us off with the historic developments.

It's the first time the head of Samsung Group has been arrested in its almost 80-year history.

Lee Jae-yong's arrest was one of the main focal points during Friday's afternoon's briefing

by the independent counsel spokesperson.

"With the arrest warrant issued, the team will be sure to investigate any issues that

haven't been adequately covered.

And of course we will not only indict Lee but will ensure we are still able to prosecute

the case."

Lee will now stay at the detention center in Uiwang, south of Seoul, where he had been

held since Thursday night before the ruling.

The conglomerate's decision-making body, the Samsung Future Strategy Office, says it will

do its best to prepare for the trial and uncover the truth behind this case.

The Seoul Central District Court had approved the arrest warrant requested by the independent

counsel team... in the early hours of Friday morning.

This was the team's second request, which it filed on Tuesday.

In filing for the second warrant, the counsel expanded the charges against Lee to include

diverting assets overseas and concealing the gains from a criminal act.

That's on top of the original charges of bribery, embezzlement and perjury the team filed against

Glue all petals together.

Glue zircons to the center of flower.

Cut a circle from ribbon. Burn an edge.

Glue hair clip base to the circle.

Hello and welcome to our demo of The Surge !

I'm Adam Hetenyi, head of game design at Deck13,

and with me is Thorsten Lange, our head of engineering who will be doing the driving for us today.

The Surge is a hardcore action-RPG with a focus on tactical melee combat,

scheduled for release in May of this year on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One and PC.

You may remember from our previous video

that The Surge is set in a dystopian near-future version of Earth.

The game takes place in the sprawling industrial complex of CREO,

a company trying to reverse the globally catastrophic effects of runaway climate change,

after some sort of disaster has occurred in CREO's primary facilities.

So at this point in the game you know that

the section of the CREO complex you've seen so far is just totally messed up.

Most of the workers are dead,

the ones who are left are crazed and attack you on sight.

So you're on a little bit of a rescue mission here.

The company's leadership is trapped up in the executive levels,

they're the ones in charge of all these systems.

They might be able to give you some answers, maybe even reverse some of the problems here

but making our way there isn't necessarily going to be very easy.

The area we're in now is an abandoned biochemical laboratory

where CREO did a lot of the research to develop the compounds

they're now launching into the atmosphere.

So, combat in The Surge doesn't use light and heavy attacks,

but rather horizontal and vertical attacks.

The reason for that is because we can target specific body parts of our enemies.

You can see Thorsten here is targeting an unarmored body part

that's going to make us deal more damage,

he's more likely to stagger his opponent.

But you can see when he hit an armored part with that last attack,

it actually didn't stagger him very much, he walked through the attack.

When you build up enough combat energy, you can do what you just saw him do there.

You can perform a finishing sequence which chops of the limb,

letting you take their armour.

You learn the schematics, which means you'll be able to go craft

that very same armour for yourself back at an ops station.

You can also take their weapons, use them right away

but since they're not upgraded yet, they won't necessarily be as good

But you can still try them out right away then decide if you want to upgrade.

Here you have some kind of security unit

hunter-tracker guy, trying to apprehend us.

That's not cool, we're not going to let him do that.

So something we really wanted to do in this demo was

show off some of the narrative elements of the game.

In The Surge, you'll be able to find and interact with a number of NPCs,

some of whom you'll be able to help,

others will be able to help you.

In either case you'll be able to speak with them to find out more about what's going on at CREO.

Let's see what she has to say.

Ok,

so this Doctor Chavez, she needs us to end the lockdown in this area

but all the greenhouses are affected so I guess we need to go back underground

to find another way.

We're gonna try out another weapon, this is the weapon we cut off the first gentleman

that we encountered upstairs at ground level.

Let's see how this guy performs.

So again we're targeting an unarmored body part,

the weapon arm one more time.

You can see this plays differently from the staff.

It hits hard, it has big combos,

but it's quite a bit slower.

It also has different finishing move sequences,

all the different weapons have different finishing sequences.

You'll have to try them out and see which ones have the move sets you like the best,

which ones are coolest to your personally, and fit your style.

We're gonna try out the Klinge Power Grip as well,

it' s a mounted weapon.

This time we damaged an armoured body part.

We got the weapon,

and then we also got the wrecked gear for that particular piece,

the RHINO arm gear, so we'll be able to craft that later.

We also picked up an implant.

Implants are really important in The Surge.

Your exo-rig has a certain number of implant slots that you can equip them in

that'll increase the more core power you build up, the more times you level up.

They all also consume a certain amount of core power while you're using them, so

you'll have to decide whether you prefer more passive benefits (more health, more stamina),

or more active things like the heals you've seen Thorsten using,

instant energy boosts, combat damage boosts, things like this.

You'll have to make those choices for yourself.

So Thorsten just popped out a drone of his own to fight back against one of these drones shooting at him.

We mentioned before that we would have a ranged combat system and that's exactly what this is.

Your drone, it can be equipped with a number of different ability modules,

things that let it do different stuff.

In this case, he's used the flamethrower to blast these drones out of the sky.

You really want to keep a look out for these things, they're really interesting.

They let you mix up your gameplay,

sometimes reach enemies who are a little bit higher than you can strike, things like this.

Ok, this elevator is out of order, I guess we need to find somewhere to power it.

Here's a security door.

Ok, so we don't have access to go through secure areas yet.

We have to get that later, then come back and see what's behind there.

It's something I mentioned in our last video,

about the metroidvanian level design elements

that we try to use as much as we can.

There's a lot of areas that you'll come across

that you won't be able to access the first time that you find them,

but when you get the capabilities to access them later we want you to be compelled to come back

and explore those areas.

Later, when you have a security-equipped rig that can pass these authorization checks

then you can come back to this area and see what's behind that locked door.

Similarly, with the chest you saw him try and use there,

it has a core power level of 80 required to overcharge

which means you probably don't have enough to do it the first time you come through this level.

Later, when you're a higher level,

you can come back and open that thing, and maybe get something nice inside...

We've come through this plant research laboratory

it looks a little secretive.

Now we're in the main greenhouse area.

You remember, Chavez mentioned we had to enter the largest greenhouse

and then find a console.

So we must be getting pretty close...

Alright, that's our leg now !

So we'll be able to craft that Scarab leg gear when we go back home.

You can see Thorsten cycling through some of these drone implants.

So we just used the infra-blaster drone to shoot at this zombie man

pulling him closer without having to go into his area.

The infra-blaster is kind of an interesting module for the drone.

It actually doesn't cost any energy to use in most cases,

so you can always pull an enemy closer to you.

But, if you have energy, it'll use that energy to deal a good amount of damage.

So you can always use it, but you get a bonus if it uses energy.

This definitely looks like the main greenhouse area.

It has some sort of growing room set up.

A bunch of plants under these lights...

who are not of sound mind anymore,

who are defending this place against you.

That's not very nice !

to knock these guys away from each other

and give himself some room to work.

The explosions will hurt the enemies as well,

but as you can see they're equipped to handle this sort of thing, so it hurts you a lot more.

These guys have a weakness, it looks like !

Over in the United States, President Donald Trump continues to call out the media.

During Thursday's press conference the former reality show star once again claimed the "dishonest"

media is treating his administration unfairly.

On the same day, his new pick for national security adviser turned down the offer.

Lee Unshin has the latest on the goings-on in the administration.

At a news conference held at the White House on Thursday, President Donald Trump launched

a series of attacks on the media, claiming that it's been giving his administration unfair

treatment.

"I'm not ranting and raving.

I love this.

I'm having a good time doing it.

But tomorrow, the headlines are going to be 'Donald Trump rants and raves.'

I'm not ranting and raving."

Trump also accused the media of delivering fake news by saying that his campaign team

had been in contact with Russian officials.

"I did not do anything for Russia, I've done nothing for Russia."

This was following a series of reports accusing him and his aides of having had contact with

Russian intelligence officials during his presidential campaign.

He also complained about the flood of leaks dogging his administration, saying information

printed in publications like the Washington Post and the New York Times could damage the

U.S. response to global issues with the Middle East and North Korea.

"I don't have to tell you what I'm going to do in North Korea.

And I don't have to tell you what I'm going to do with Iran.

You know why?

Because they shouldn't know."

He also blasted the leaks of his phone conversations with world leaders to the press,... calling

it a criminal act.

Trump ended the press conference with remarks about the "significant progress" his new administration

has made in the month since his inauguration, such as a more positive business climate and

a rising stock market.

But things are far from settled in the White House.

On the same day, Trump's latest pick for National Security Adviser, retired Vice Admiral Robert

Harward, turned the offer down, citing family and financial reasons.

The admiral was supposed to replace Michael Flynn, who resigned Monday after it emerged

he had lied to White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about his phone

conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

Hanjin Shipping declared bankrupt - Duration: 2:52.

Hanjin Shipping, once the biggest name in Korea's thriving shipping sector,... was officially

declared bankrupt today.

Despite injections of governmental support, it folded under the weight of billions of

dollars of debt.

According to our Kim Min-ji, this development is expected to deal a damaging blow not just

to the local industry, but the economy as a whole.

A 40-year history...

ended.

The Seoul Central District Court on Friday cut off the lifeline of Hanjin Shipping -- once

Korea's largest shipping company... and the world's seventh largest -- following a two-week

appeals period.

A bankruptcy trustee will now be appointed to sell off Hanjin's remaining assets.

Earlier this month, the court decided to end the rehabilitation scheme,... saying the firm's

liquidation value would be worth more than its value as a going concern.

Hanjin had been under court receivership since last September, after creditors decided not

to extend further financial support.

At the time, the company's debt stood at over 5 billion U.S. dollars.

Hanjin's collapse was preceded by tough industry conditions,... including low freight rates

due to overcapacity, and a decline in shipments from slumping global demand.

Some of Hanjin's routes will now be covered by foreign shippers,... and Korean exporters

may have to shoulder the cost of redirecting the shipments or finding new shippers.

Layoffs are another concern -- while the government says 2-thousand workers will lose their jobs,...

experts expect about 25-thousand job losses from related companies as well.

"I feel as though the government failed to recognize the importance of the shipping industry

as a national industry.

Rather than help it stand up again,... Hanjin was forced to sell its major assets -- in

essence, leaving it with no options to create profit.

The collapse is expected to result in a plunge in Korea's credibility as a shipping nation."

Hyundai Merchant Marine now becomes the dominant player in the local shipping industry.

It will take on about 200 Hanjin employees and stakes in Hanjin's overseas terminals...

and it's aiming to grab 5 percent of the global market share by 2021.

It currently holds about 2-point-2 percent of all shipping routes -- falling short of

Hanjin's share of about seven percent in cargo from Asia to North America.

With more industries set to go through debt workout schemes, experts say the government

needs to do more in the initial stages.

"We cannot look at different sectors as one.

It should depend on the industry outlook and economic principles.

We have to consider both the company's financial status and industry factors -- and then decide

what's needed."

Experts add that as timing is key in corporate restructuring, they say it's important that

the next administration sees it as a priority.

Underground economy accounts for 8% of Korea's GDP: KIPF - Duration: 0:55.

Korea's underground or shadow economy is estimated to account for eight percent of its entire

GDP, according to a new estimate.

The Korea Institute of Public Finance released a report today putting the value of untaxed

transactions, smuggling and other black market activities at 124-point-7 trillion won, or

about 109-billion dollars as of 2015 -- though it cautioned that the estimate can change

depending on the variables and models.

It found the underground economy's percentage of GDP fell by several tenths of a percent

since 2013 when it was at 8-point-7 percent.

The government's been trying to bring the black market into the legitimate economy over

the past several years to raise money for social programs and welfare.

Still, the 8-percent figure is far lower than an estimate made in 2010 by Friedrich Schneider,

an economist from Austria, who put it at nearly a quarter of GDP.

S. Korea, U.S. and Japan reaffirm N. Korea to abandon nuke and missile programs in complete... - Duration: 2:30.

Over in Germany, the top diplomats of South Korea, the United States and Japan issued

a blunt statement... denouncing Pyongyang in the strongest terms for its recent missile

launch.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also pledged that Seoul will have Washington's

full support under the Trump administration.

Connie Kim tells us more.

South Korea, the United States and Japan condemned North Korea's recent firing of a ballistic

missile in the strongest terms and emphasized Pyongyang must abandon its nuclear and missile

programs in a complete, verifiable, and irreversible manner.

The joint statement was issued on Thursday by South Korea's foreign minister Yun Byung-se,

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Japan's foreign minister Fumio Kishida following

their discussion on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in the German city

of Bonn.

"Seoul, Washington and Tokyo condemn North Korea's recent provocation in the strongest

possible terms."

The top diplomats also agreed to hold a trilateral meeting among their top nuclear envoys in

the coming days regarding the threats posed by the North.

In a separate meeting between Minister Yun and Secretary of State Tillerson,... both

agreed to draw up response measures under the assumption North Korea is in the final

stages of nuclear armament.... and they reportedly discussed ways to bring about more active

participation from China in dealing with Pyongyang.

South Korea's back-to-back meetings with the U.S. are evaluated to be positive by many

analysts in Seoul as they hinted the new Trump administration's policy on North Korea to

be largely similar to its predecessor.

"Overall this was a positive meeting where both ministerial level officials from those

countries were able to reaffirm their commitments to the alliance.// It has largely been on

the same line that the Obama administration has maintained with regards to the United

States commitment to the alliance and to the region."

"During his stay in Germany, Minister Yun will continue his diplomatic efforts through

a series of one-on-one meetings with his counterparts from Japan and China.

Their discussions are expected to focus on the recently erected statue commemorating

the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery... and the deployment of the U.S. missile system

THAAD.
