Secret Santa: Axe Refurbish - Duration: 8:30.

I put together a Secret Santa event for makers this year.

There is a link below to a playlist describing the event.

I happen to get James Wright from the Wood by Wright channel.

So to honor him, I figured I would make a hand tool.

And it doesn't get more hand tool than an axe.

In honor of James' style of woodworking I will avoid using power tools in the project.

Chainsaw not withstanding. I suppose in software engineering we call this bootstrapping.

The wood I am milling is ash from my sister-in-law's place that we took down.

Other than hickory it is the preferred wood for axe handles in the states.

This side here is where I am going to take the board I will use for the handle because I want the grain pattern to be flat sawn and wide.

I'm taking a board about 3' long and about 2" thick.

Here on the end you can see the flat sawn grain that I am looking for for the axe handle.

These logs were taken this September and despite the tree being mostly dead it is very wet wood.

I'm going to accelerate the drying process with a makeshift kiln.

The board will be placed in it and I have a IR heater which will heat the wood up.

I know I will get some checking, but I don't exactly have a lot of time for this project and hopefully I will wind up with enough material.

While technically I am using electricity, I think James might find it in his heart to forgive me.

So this is the most expensive piece of the project, a $3 axe head I got off of an auction site.

If I know James from his podcast, I think he'll appreciate the frugality.

I'm soaking it in vinegar for a couple days to remove the rust.

Then using brass bristle brushes I give the axe head a good scrub down.

I don't know that a little pitting is really going to hurt it.

And unsurprisingly we have checking, but the ends are good, so I will cut a section off the edges without checking.

I'm not going into sharpening all the tools used, but this was a saw which appeared to have large enough teeth to be considered a rip saw.

I don't know James, power saws seem like a good idea right about now.

In the end it took about 15 minutes to rip a piece from the side of the board.

YAY!

Over all there is a little bit of checking.

But not very deep, I think this will work.

The way you want an axe handle isn't going to be like this or this.

Actually you would want the axe head to be this direction so you are kinda running with these rings here.

The would be parallel with them rather than cross-wise.

So what I am going to have to try to do is try to flatten this guy out

Have him this way and then turn him over do some more hand planing to make this thing closer to the shape I need for the head.

So I don't have a proper bench so I'm just going to wing it.

The lack of a proper workbench probably made this project far more difficult than necessary.

I wound up screwing down a couple scraps to the act as rails to hold the piece and a couple clamps and a block as a stop.

I used a small plane, rasp, and block plane to rough out the shape.

The rasp broke part way through, but by that time I had the block plane working well enough for me.

I marked out the amount of material needed for the tenon for head to slide onto and made a shoulder.

I used a chisel to remove a lot of material at first.

I'd chisel down the shoulder and then just remove long strips towards the end.

As I got closer to the right size I'd try paring away with hand instead of using the hammer.

I even grabbed a spokeshave, but due to the shoulder of the tenon it wasn't the most effective.

Once the head fit on smoothly, I marked the curve for the shoulder and removed that.

I marked the depth of the axe head on the shoulder so I had a visible line when to stop removing material for the curve.

I picked up this sawtooth rasp to replace the one that broke.

It works amazingly well.

I was able to remove a lot of material quickly and the gullets of the teeth were almost self cleaning when used like a saw and drawn back over the material.

Once the shape was fairly well defined I grabbed the spoke shave again to clean up the rough surface left by the rasp.

According to my research boiled linseed oil is a popular finish for axe handles.

I marked a line on the end of the tenon for the head.

Then I cut the gap for the wedge to hold the head on.

I wanted to sharpen the axe before putting the head on, since my makeshift vice will have a tough time holding the extra length.

First I made a fairly even edge with a file.

Then I came in with a stone and honed the edge.

I decided to do a little more cleanup on the head with some steel wool before putting the head on.

Next I needed the wedge.

So I grabbed a block of cherry I had laying around and planed one face smooth.

Then I ripped a piece a bit longer than I needed.

I slide the wedge in, but I could see it was going to get destroyed if I just hammered it in.

I found a cutoff scrap which would allow me to apply force across the whole width.

Then I used a flush trim saw to cut off the excess.

And hit the end with some BLO.

I would loathe to send James a bad axe, so I gave a couple bowl blank cut offs a few wacks.

This is actually a felling axe, but it worked for splitting a couple small pieces.

Well, there you go James.

A new axe handle, slightly used.

Christmas in Finland - Duration: 6:12.

In Finland we have this thing called "joulu".

It means Christmas.

This is A Kind of Adventurous Life.

I got this questions that how do we celebrate Christmas.

Hi! My name is Kirikou, and in this video I'm going to tell you almost everything -

that you wanted to know about Christmas in Finland.

In Finland, Christmas is family time.

And most of the traditional Christmas activities -

happen during Christmas Eve.

As a sidenote, I must tell you that when I'm talking about traditions -

I'm talking about 50 or so -years old traditions.

The real old Christmas traditions with the horned goat -

I will skip, -

as those have been taken over by the imported Coca-Cola traditions -

That are nicely mixed with the local traditions -

that create this lovely modern Finnish way to celebrate Christmas.

Let's start with "joulukuusi".

It's literal translation is "your December", -

"your Christmas moon", -

"Christmas six", -

or "Christmas spruce".

But what I mean is a Christmas tree.

The Christmas tree is selected from the forest -

as that is where the trees grow.

They don't grow in the supermarkets, you know.

Now, let's see which one looks good.

Oh, that one looks nice.

Then the decorations.

This year, I am the head of the Christmas tree decoration committee, -

and I can choose how the Christmas tree will look like.

Looks good, doesn't it?

The morning of Christmas Eve starts with rice porridge.

It's really a traditional Finnish dish, -

even though the nearest place to Finland where rice grows is -

in Italy, some 3000 km away.

Then, after 11 o'clock, the Snowman is broadcasted on national TV.

Then, Christmas peace is declared in Turku, -

where it has been declared since 1320s.

Now, that can be called a tradition.

Tomorrow, God willing, is the graceful celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, -

and thus is declared a peaceful Christmas time to all, -

by advising devotion and to behave otherwise quietly and peacefully, -

because he who breaks this peace and violates the peace of Christmas by any illegal or improper behaviour, -

shall under aggravating circumstances be guilty -

and punished according to what the law and statutes prescribe for each and every offence separately.

Finally, a joyous Christmas feast is wished to all inhabitants of the city.

Then, it's time for a physical purification -

in a form of a sauna.

When everybody is clean, -

we can enjoy the Christmas dinner.

The center piece of a traditional Christmas dinner -

is a full ham, raised and slaughtered just for this event.

But as majority of my family members are vegetarians, -

we have a seitan ham.

And we eat those foods so much -

that we just can't move.

Then we rest for a while, -

and eat some dessert.

And because my grandma made so much of all the Christmas food that we can't finish them today -

we continue eating them tomorrow -

and day after that till New Year.

But let's get back to the Christmas Eve.

When we're so full that we can't even move -

we wait for Santa to arrive.

Yes, in Finland Santa Claus, -

or "joulupukki", like he's called in Finnish -

really visits every home individually -

thru the door!

The tradition is also that Santa happens to come exactly at the same time -

when one of the adult male members leave to take out the trash.

That, in my opinion -

is a really strange tradition.

It seems that my uncle Joni is taking the trash this year.

Santa enters the house by asking if there's any nice kids around.

"Are there any nice kids around?"

Then kids sing a song, -

and Santa delivers the presents.

But unfortunately Santa can't stay for a long, -

because there are so many other children to be visited.

Santa leaves, and right after that -

my uncle return from taking our the trash.

What a strange coincident...

So, this is pretty much how Christmas is celebrated in Finland.

Or at least, how my family celebrated it this year.

We don't have flying reindeers, -

of Black Pieters, or Befanas.

On Christmas Day, we play with our new toys, -

and on Boxing Day, we go visit our friends.

Aye guys! top 5 ways you can win mei's

snowball offense sorry for the echo by the way,

apologies can't really do

anything about that, but anyways in mei's

snowball offense you know it's a really

interesting game mode and plus you know

in the arcade you get some wins you get a

loot box, it's pretty nice so mei's snowball offense

is a really fast way you can do that so

I'm going to help you win those matches

because mei's snowball offense functions

pretty differently from all the other

game modes so the first tip i'm going to

give you my number 5 tip is gonna be

that you have to predict movement it is

a skill-based thing because obviously

the snowballs doesn't just go straight, it actually

like starts going down and you know all

those wacky movements

you've got to be able to predict and you

really just gotta practice it's mostly

just a practice thing but if you predict

movement you can definitely kill people

fairly easily especially when you only

have one snowball but with that being

said i want to go into my next tip which

is number four myy fourth tip well in a

position number four basically use

Ultimates carefully now if you don't

know

in mei's snowball offense Ultimates basically

allow you to shoot as many snowballs as

you can so you can rapid-fire it's

really helpful but you got to use this

carefully in multiple different ways for

one don't waste it because your ultimate

carries over to the next round so don't

just and the round ends and just for fun use your ultimate

it's a very important tool and you

can definitely save you in a lot of

situations but also i want to say that

you gotta know who's around you and if

you're going to die because you don't

want to use your ultimate and just get shot

down because that's a waste of an

ultimate you gotta to take somebody down and

don't try and just take people down just

like one person take multiple people

down but for the next step number three

is going to be to shoot at a

considerable distance like shoot close

or medium range shots and the reason

this is is because the way the snowball

functions and the way it travels it's

going to be harder to hit those long

range shots you can go forward if you're

really skilled but i wouldn't recommend it

but other close to medium-range you

can definitely in most cases take them

out unless you miss I miss sometimes at

close range but it's your best bet, but with

that tip being done i want to go to my

next step number two, know your

surroundings

now I know this is simple but in mei's

snowball offense when you have to reload

you can't really look around and know

your surroundings too well so you gotta

know when you're reloading where you're

reloading and who's around because if

you reload and someone's just around the

corner chasing you pop your dead most

likely because you can't move while your

pretty much reloading so they don't

really even have to try so they can

definitely go sneak up behind your back

and just kill you like that so

definitely watch out for your

surroundings and be sure to play safe so

you win now my number one tip in the

number one is a really big one

it's basically don't underestimate the

enemy team

okay we've all been in situations where

maybe our team has four people alive and

they only have one easy win right? wrong!

because mei's snowballl offense relies on

skill and and it's not like you can fire

whenever you shoot and you miss or hit

you still have to reload so do not

underestimate the team i'll have footage

in the background of me getting play

of the game and in that match it was a one

v. four I was the one and there were four

and i use my ultimate and I killed three

of them and then later on

it doesn't show on the play the game but

I killed the other guy and we won

so do not underestimate anybody because

you don't know how it's gonna go

so always play your best and don't

underestimate the enemy team it may be

somewhat unlikely for one person to kill

the other four and maybe I did have my

ultimate that saved me, but keep in mind

nobody's perfect at aiming so they can miss

and then i can just kill or you know

whatever, but those are my tips for mei's

snowball offense

I slept in the back seat of my car that night.

I wasn't prepared to get involved with someone

I knew there were tracks coming up a head

but in a panic desperate situation to get

from i decided to speed up

but without knowing how low my vehicle was.

But it didn't make it... my vehicle became wedged onto the tracks

I tried everything to get it off with the time I

had but then I realized I must abandon it

or else i will face whoever this person

could be I mean by all means they could be

friendly but you got... It wasn't a risk I was

willing to take

especially in the current situation

I made my way to a quiet town named tulga

I found a few supplies there such as

berries from the berry bush

and a water well

Me and my brother John would actively visit devil's castle whilst on holiday here,

especially in the winter. As the views were

just breathtaking

I know what you're thinking why on earth

would you want to go through the trouble

of going on holiday to a wintry

wasteland called Chernarus?

You see it offered something vastly different from what we

used to back home... that wasn't the full reason

to why we decided to stay here for the

meantime John was a skilled mechanic at

the time who could fix almost any vehicle.

There was fear mongering on the television

by the media about an outbreak of a

a modified flu virus which caused many

people to experience extreme seizures,

and then later dying but we are all rest

assured by the Chernarus government about

a flu vaccine to help fight against this.

which they were actively rolling out

within the next day or so. I guess the vaccine either didn't work.

or it was too late.

Just as things started to all go bad we have made the decision to stay

in wintery Chernarus for Christmas

since the snow was so extreme it delayed and

cancelled many flights.

so we felt we had no other option but to stay.

The next day I woke up freezing and noticed I was

alone. The streets were completely deserted

not a single vocal was heard. It felt like

a scene out of a movie I couldn't tell if it was

real or not. until I was attacked by a

fellow neighbor at my front door he wasn't

acting like how I remembered him to act

he didn't act desperate. he smelt lightly of rotten

flesh. I managed to trip him up and move as

move as quick as I possible but stopped!

suddenly as I threw up. because I wasn't

sure what i've just seen

I woke up to the sound of knocking

I must have dozed off. What's that sound? Am I Still Alive?

I noticed daylight was shortening and

the nights were getting longer that can only

mean one thing

nights were most certainly getting colder
