U.S. defense chief James Mattis visits Seoul - Duration: 1:57.

We start off with the U.S. defense chief's visit to Seoul...

James Mattis is widely expected to deliver a clear message to his South Korean counterpart

this morning regarding the Trump administration's security policies and North Korea's continued

military threats.

Kim Hyun-bin tells us more.

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis arrived in Seoul on Thursday afternoon for his first

overseas trip since taking office less than two weeks ago.

While all eyes are focused on what results the talks will bring about,... one expert

offered his predictions.

"North Korea has been enhancing its nuclear and weapons of mass destruction capabilities

and Washington wants to strongly counter those measures, which seems to be the reason why

Mattis chose Seoul as the destination for his first overseas trip."

Mattis met with U.S. Forces Korea Commander Vincent Brooks and was briefed on the current

security situation on the peninsula.

That includes the speculation...

North Korea is preparing to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile on February 16th to mark

the birthday of late former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

On Friday morning, Mattis and Seoul's defense chief Han Min-koo will sit down together for

the first defense minister talks between the two countries under the Trump administration.

"The two are expected to discuss ways to better counter North Korea, and some say the defense

cost-sharing issue could also be discussed, but I believe it's too soon for that.

The talks will most likely focus on North Korea's threats."

Shortly before landing on Thursday, Mattis told reporters that he and Han would discuss

the planned deployment of the THAAD missile defense system on the Korean peninsula to

better counter North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats.

"The two defense chiefs are expected to release a strong joint statement warning North Korea

against future provocations, before the new U.S. defense secretary heads to Tokyo for

talks with his Japanese counterpart."

Trump aide refutes 'abrasive remark' in talks with Australian PM - Duration: 0:57.

A top advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump has insisted the White House didn't leak details

of a phone conversation between Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Appearing on Fox News on Thursday to refute claims of a reportedly heated exchange between

the two leaders,... Kellyanne Conway said the media was misleading the public.

She was referring to a Washington Post report that said Trump and Turnbull clashed over

a bilateral agreement to take in refugees from an Australian detention center.

The report claims Trump hung up just 25 minutes into what was supposed to have been an hour-long

talk... and that the U.S. president described it as his worst phone call of the day.

Conway said Trump doesn't mince words, but noted that he has had respectful conversations

with more than ten world leaders in the past week.

And before the defense ministers' meeting today... the Pentagon chief met with South

Korea's Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn on Thursday... as he arrived

in Seoul.

The two sides emphasized the strong alliance between the two nations,... in the face of

continued military provocations by North Korea.

"The U.S. defense secretary's unprecedented visit holds a symbolic meaning and shows the

importance of the Seoul-Washington alliance."

"We have to regret the reality of the threat that your country and my country faces.

And we intend to be shoulder to shoulder with you as we face this together."

The U.S. defense chief went on to say... that the Trump administration will deal with North

Korea's nuclear threats as a top security priority.

Mattis also hinted that reaffirming the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system to the

Korean peninsula was an important reason for his decision to visit Seoul in a timely manner.

Also meeting with National Security Office Chief Kim Kwan-jin, Mattis emphasized the

importance of pushing through the THAAD deployment as planned.

We start this morning at Seoul's defense ministry,... where U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis

is currently locked in talks with his South Korean counterpart Han Min-koo.

Hyun-bin,... both sides have plenty of issues to discuss...

Good morning.

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis arrived here less than an hour ago and was welcomed

by South Korea's honor guard as well as a 21 cannon salute just outside this building.

Mattis and South Korea's defense minister Han Min-koo are holding talks as we speak

just a floor above me.

As you mentioned,... they have lots of talk about as this is their first face-to-face

meeting since Mattis was sworn in by President Trump around a week ago.

South Korean military officials tell me they'll mostly focus on North Korea and ways to better

counter threats posed by the regime.

Mattis said on Wednesday that no country other than North Korea needs to worry about the

deployment of the THAAD missile defense system to South Korea.

He said THAAD is for the defense of U.S. allies and their people... and for American troops

who are committed to their defense.

Those remarks were likely directed toward China,.. which continues to strongly oppose

the deployment,.. saying it will encroach upon its national interests and destabilize

the region.

THAAD is expected to be deployed on South Korean soil by the middle of this year at

the earliest.

The two defense chiefs are also expected to discuss North Korea's threat last month to

launch an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Experts have speculated North Korea could launch an ICBM on February 16th to mark the

birthday of its late former leader Kim Jong-il.

After the talks wrap up,...

Minister Han and Mattis will visit the Seoul National Cemetery to pay their respects to

the soldiers who lost their lives in the Korean War.

Later today, Mattis will fly to Tokyo for talks with his Japanese counterpart.

The North Korea threat is likely top of the agenda there as well.

His full name is James 'Jamie' Dornan.

He was born on May 1, 1982 in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Well, I hope you gave a compliment and said, "It's beautiful!"

Both times the most appropriate response was neither rising nor falling intonation.

It was a combination of the two.

A rise-fall.

This is one of the intonation patterns we'll practice in this video.

We'll focus on intonation to express strong emotions.

The rise-fall intonation pattern uses a sharp rise before the fall.

By "sharp" I mean it's quick and it's high.

We use this rise-fall combination to express strong emotions like...a good surprise.

Wow!

A bad surprise.

Wow.

Anger.

Idiot!

Sarcasm.

Wonderful.

And delight.

Wonderful!

You try the pattern.

What if I told you that you wouldn't have the Internet for a whole month?

How would you respond?

How would you say these words?

Again, there's a sharp rise before the fall.

Even if you have only one syllable, you need to go up and then down.

As in, "No!"

If you have more than one syllable to work with, there can be some stepping.

As in...

An exception could be questions that ask for confirmation.

Because we feel strong emotion, there's still that sharp rise, but then you continue rising.

That includes yes-no questions, for example: Really?!

Or it could be a wh- question that we need to repeat because we're so surprised by the answer.

What did you just say?!

You try the sharp rise.

What if I tell you that tomorrow you can have dinner

with your favorite celebrity at a five-star restaurant?

How would you respond?

How would you say these words?

I should note that there are alternative patterns for expressing negative emotions, like anger and disappointment.

For example, we can use level intonation, where you stay at the same pitch.

Or there can be a long fall after a short rise.

Our team just got asked to write another report.

Yay.

Our flight has just been canceled again!

Oh no.

Great.

Let's try a dialog. It'll go like this.

Now I'll be person A, and you'll be person B.

Do you know how old this umbrella is?

I got it about twenty years ago.

Really?!

I'm just the opposite.

Let's try switching. Okay?

I'll take role B, and you take role A.

How old?

You're kidding! I don't have anything older than five years.

Yeah. I don't like to hold on to things for a long time.

Be sure to practice the dialog a few times.

I'll also give you a few more models now that you can use for listen-repeat practice.

They're all models of strong emotion.
