The gospel of the Lord.
- [All] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- I suppose I should wish you all a happy new year,
because we begin our liturgical year
with this first Sunday of Advent.
So, each time that we begin,
we remember that we are here because God loves us.
Each one, individually.
And he has a plan for each one of us,
and it's up to us in our time,
as we continue on on our faith journey,
to try and figure out that plan.
And so, we always kind of look to the future.
That's one of the aspects of life,
is we always kind of look toward what's about to happen.
You know, even adults will say to children,
so, what do you want to be when you grow up?
And then, when high schoolers maybe are looking to
how they're going to live their life after high school,
or what college might they attend.
Young adults, concerning, we know what,
what are they gonna do in their vocation,
how are they gonna grow in their career.
Senior citizens, what are they gonna do in retirement.
How are they going to retire.
Myself, I have to tell you,
I've been looking to my future lately
because we have to fill out these forms for the diocese,
us priests had to fill out our end-of-life forms.
You know, what are you gonna do when you die,
what's gonna happen, you know,
your mass for your burial and all this,
so I was with my friends, Barb and Eileen,
we were talking about my funeral mass.
And we were planning the songs for that funeral mass,
and, you know, the opening hymn is gonna be O Happy Day.
(congregation chuckles)
And the gospel choir from St. James is gonna be singing that
and then, our other ministries at St. John Newman
are gonna follow through with some of my favorite songs.
And then, we're, as we were preparing for my funeral,
and I started getting sad,
and I'm like, "I'm not gonna be there.
"I'm not gonna hear this."
You know, I'm anticipating the future,
and I don't know when that's gonna be,
because, you know, just not too long ago,
my only classmate in the seminary died.
And he was 10 years younger than me, died at the age of 47.
So, it brings the reality of human life, you know, for me,
that yeah, I don't know how long I'm gonna last.
So I'm preparing for that.
So I decided that next year,
it's gonna be 20 years that I'm a priest next year.
So, I think for my 20th anniversary,
I'm actually gonna celebrate my funeral mass
so I can hear all the songs
(congregation laughing)
that I'm going to experience while I'm in the casket.
Looking to the future, we look to the future,
and Advent kind of reflects life.
Because Advent now, too, for us, is looking to the future.
You know, we do certainly look toward December 25th,
we look toward that future when we celebrate
that great feast of Jesus' birth.
And then we also look to the future
when Christ will come again.
We always look, we prepare ourselves for that time as well,
as we're told to make sure that,
as we heard in Jesus say in the gospel today,
to be vigilant at all times, to be prepared.
Because we believe that Jesus came 2,000 years ago,
and we believe that he was the fulfillment
of what we heard from the Prophet Jeremiah.
All right, that he will raise up for David a just shoot,
he shall do what is right and just in the land.
You know, Jeremiah was looking toward the future,
all right, looking for that.
Although he never saw that future happen.
Now, we know Jesus came and we know he's gonna come again,
but will we see that future ourselves?
We don't know.
But we have to be prepared.
And we prepare by listening
as St. Paul told us in the second reading.
He said increase and abound in love
for one another and for all.
So when we increase and abound in love
for one another, for all,
it's gonna strengthen our hearts.
To be blameless in holiness before our God, our Father.
And when we think about that,
that's the way that we prepare for our future
everyday.
The more we love, the more we'll be ready
so that when that great day comes at the end
when Jesus is saying about how the tribulation
is going to be in all of that,
we won't be fearful.
Because, for those who have faith,
for those who are prepared,
that's gonna be a great and glorious day.
May we all be prepared for that day,
as we continue on in our Advent season, amen.
