The Science of Coffee | Big Ag Episode 2 - Duration: 3:26.

Welcome to Big Agriculture, a series where I chronicle the most important agricultural

crops in the world.

You can check out the first video in the series, about maize, by clicking the card in the top

right, or clicking the link in the description.

Today, I'll be talking about a plant that is part of many folks' morning routines:

coffee.

There are two widely grown species of coffee, Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora.

Arabica coffee makes up about 80% of coffee production, and Robusta coffee, the common

name for Coffea canephora makes up the remaining 20%.

It takes a coffee plant three to four years to bear fruit, and the fruit it produces are

actually drupes, a botanical classification that also includes stone fruits like peaches

and apricots.

They're referred to as coffee cherries, and after fertilization of the flower, take

about 15 weeks to development.

Each cherry contains two coffee "beans."

Once they're red and ripe, the cherries are ready to be harvested.

This is done in one of two ways, by hand or with a harvesting machine.

Most coffee is harvested by hand, the fruits deposited into a basket, and then they must

be processed.

There are two types of processing, the dry method and the wet method.

The dry method is simple; the cherries are spread out and allowed to air dry.

This can take a few weeks, and the cherries are then hulled to produce the final beans.

In the wet method, the cherries are pulped, removing the outer layer and leaving only

the beans with a thin layer of parchment skin.

They're then sorted in water.

Good, ripe beans sink, while under-ripe beans float and can be removed.

The processed beans are then air dried.

After either processing method, the beans are hulled if needed, and stored until they

can be roasted.

And fun fact: dark roast coffee has less caffeine than light roast coffee.

Many people assume that the bolder taste of dark roast means it has more caffeine, but

the longer roasting process actually decreases the amount of caffeine.

The USDA estimates that 159 million bags of coffee will be produced in the 2017/2018 season.

So, the world produces a lot of coffee.

The countries with the greatest amount of coffee production include Brazil, Vietnam,

Indonesia, Colombia, though coffee is grown in dozens of countries.

It's thought that the modern day coffee industry began in Yemen, which began exporting

coffee in the 1500s.

The traditional anecdote goes that coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian shepherd named

Kaldi, who noticed that his goats gained a lot of energy after eating the beans of the

plant.

There is no hard evidence of this particular story, though, but coffee does grow natively

across Africa.

There are, however, a few possible references to coffee consumption earlier than the 1500s.

A medical textbook from the early 10th century speaks of "buncham," which is thought

to be coffee.

And a medical encyclopedia from the turn of the eleventh century includes what is thought

to be coffee among the 760 drugs listed.

Written by Avicenna, it mentions a light yellow bean that clears the skin and "gives an

excellent smell to the body."

And as is usually the case, where there are plants there are pollinators.

A coffee plant has white, fragrant flowers that grow in dense bunches.

A 2003 study looked at fruit production as related to how a flower was pollinated.

It found that cross-pollinated flowers produced more fruit, so it would likely improve yields

by encouraging the presence of more pollinators near coffee plants.

All right, that has been a small sampling of the many aspects of the coffee industry.

If you have any questions, or cool facts about coffee, please leave those in the comments!

Please also leave suggestions for future topics in my Big Agriculture series.

As always, thank you for watching, and a special thank you to my supporters on Patreon.

I'll see you next week!

N. Korea confirms missile was intermediate ballistic missile Hwasong-12 - Duration: 2:11.

North Korea says the missile launched on Tuesday was a Hwasong-12,... an intermediate range

ballistic missile it had previously threatened to use to strike waters around Guam.

Pyongyang claims this is a "significant prelude" to containing the U.S. territory,... and that

it will continue monitoring Washington's rhetoric and actions.

Cha Sang-mi has the details.

North Korea's state media has confirmed that the missile fired on Tuesday was a Hwasong-12

intermediate range ballistic missile.

According to Pyongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency on Wednesday,... the missile

launch was conducted as an armed protest against the South Korea-U.S. annual joint military

drill, Ulchi Freedom Guardian.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who watched and guided the missile launch,... stressed

that this drill is the North Korean army's first step of military operations in the Pacific...

as well as "a significant prelude" to containing the U.S. territory of Guam.

Kim also stated that Pyongyang will continue monitoring Washington's words and actions...

and conduct further ballistic missile launches targeting the Pacific... to modernize and

put into real use its missiles.

Hwasong-12 flew over 27-hundred kilometers, passing the Japanese island of Hokkaido, before

landing in the waters of the northern Pacific...

Pyongyang claims the missile successfully hit its target area.

The regime fired its projectile from around its capital area... which is quite unprecedented,

as a missile launch failure could have led to massive casualties.

Experts say,... through that, Pyongyang aimed to show off its technological stability.

Hwasong-12 is the missile with which the North warned, three weeks ago,... it would use to

strike the area around Guam, home to a U.S. military base and assets.

Tensions subdued after Pyongyang didn't carry out its plan to fire four Hwasong-12 missiles

into waters near Guam,... but Tuesday's launch could be a message that it's warning was not

a bluff.

Moon, Abe agree to impose maximum pressure on N. Korea - Duration: 2:23.

Once again talks were held, between South Korean President Moon Jae in and his Japanese

counterpart Shinzo Abe.

The topic: how to deal with Pyongyang's latest provocation.

The duo saw eye to eye on pursuing new sanctions against the regime.

Hwang Hojun starts us off with that phone meeting.

President Moon Jae-in and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe have agreed to put the maximum

possible pressure on North Korea to force the regime back to talks.

The two spoke on the phone Wednesday morning about North Korea's latest missile provocation.

(KOREAN) President Moon said the North's launch of

an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan was an outrageously violent act against

its neighbor.

He told Prime Minister Abe that his government had convened a meeting of the National Security

Council standing committee to condemn the North's provocation.

The president also mentioned how South Korea staged an armed protest by ordering four fighter

jets to conduct a live bombing drill.

They were the most intense responses against North Korea to date.

According to the Blue House, the two leaders welcomed the unprecendentedly swift gathering

of the U.N. Security Council shortly after the missile test,... as well as the Council's

adoption of a presidential statement condemning the regime.

The Blue House called that statement a result of the close working relationship between

Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington.

President Moon and Prime Minister Abe agreed to futher collaborate to push for a new UN

Security Council resolution with sanctions that are more effective against the regime,...

and also to do more to win support from China and Russia on the matter.

Regarding President Moon's past comments about keeping an open door for dialogue with the

North, a Cheong Wa Dae official stressed that the President's proposal for dialogue is limited

to efforts to prevent accidental military conflict.

Those would include, for example, military talks between the two Koreas to reestablish

a communication hotline.

The President himself repeatedly said that, in light of recent events, now is the time

to escalate sanctions and pressure on the North.

(STAND UP) President Moon and Prime Minister Abe agreed

to contact one another immediately if such events occur again and to further discuss

North Korean issues on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok early

next month.

S. Korea, U.S. and Japan join in condemnation of N. Korea and calls for emergency UNSC meeting - Duration: 2:18.

The Japanese people woke up Tuesday morning to the shocking news North Korea had fired

a missile over Hokkaido.

Tokyo was quick to condemn the launch, calling it a grave and serious threat.

Together with South Korea and the U.S., they have called for an emergency UN Security Council

meeting to try and pile more pressure on the regime.

Kwon Jang-ho has this report.

Residents of Hokkaido woke up to the sounds of emergency sirens on Tuesday morning, warning

that a missile had been fired from North Korea and could hit areas nearby.

Luckily the missile was never a threat, heading way out into the Pacific Ocean.

However, it was still the first time a North Korean rocket had flown over Japanese territory

since 2012, and Tokyo was quick to condemn it, calling it an egregious threat to the

peace and stability of the Asia Pacific region.

(Japanese) Reuters 2100 "We have lodged a strong protest with North

Korea to that effect.

I call for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council... and we will demand

even stronger measures against North Korea."

Abe later held a 40-minute phone call with President Trump, who assured the Japanese

Prime Minister that the U.S. was 100-percent with Japan.

A senior Tokyo official also told Kyodo News that the two leaders agreed that the time

is not right for dialogue with Pyongyang and that increased pressure is needed.

South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-hwa also made a call to Washington and spoke with

her U.S. counter-part Rex Tillerson.

The two sides are said to have expressed their disappointment toward the regime's actions,

and pledged to continue working closely together to tackle the North Korea threat, including

at the U.N.

South Korea, the U.S. and Japan have jointly requested an emergency meeting of the U.N.

Security Council.

It's set to convene later on Tuesday, and three allies are likely to call for further

pressure on the rogue state.

However, China and Russia, North Korea's closest allies, are likely to push for dialogue.

Sergei Ryabkov, Moscow's deputy foreign minister, said on Tuesday that sanctions had reached

their limits, and that only a diplomatic solution was the answer.

U.S. revises initial assessment on N. Korea's missile launches - Duration: 2:10.

Details are coming together about North Korea's missile launch on Saturday.

The U.S. Pacific Command now says that the launch was not a failure, as it initially

appeared to be.

Though the U.S. and South Korea still aren't sure what kind of missiles they were, it is

clear that they were meant to send a message to the allies who are now conducting their

annual joint military drills.

Connie Kim reports.

The U.S. Pacific Command has revised its earlier assessment of North Korea's latest missile

launches,… saying two of the missiles did not 'fail in flight' but rather flew about

250 kilometers in a northeastern direction.

On Saturday, North Korea launched three missiles from Gitdaeryong in the eastern part of Gangwon-do

Province towards the East Sea . An earlier assessment by the U.S. Command said the first

and third missiles failed in flight and the second blew up immediately.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff had also initially said the projectiles flew some 250

kilometers.

But where consensus is lacking is over what type of projectiles were fired; Seoul's top

office Cheong Wa Dae says they are presumed to be improved 300-millimeter artillery rockets

from a multiple-rocket launcher while the U.S. Pacific Command says the projectiles

were ballistic missiles.

While the U.S. Command says the allies will conduct a detailed analysis, what's getting

the spotlight is the timing of the launches.

The annual Seoul-Washington military drills kicked off on Monday amid tensions between

North Korea and the U.S. following Pyongyang's threat against Guam and its two long-range

ballistic missile launches last month.

U.S. media have interpreted Saturday's launches as a protest against the drills which Pyongyang

labels as a provocative rehearsal for an invasion.

Seoul and Washington say the training is purely defensive.

The White House said it's monitoring the situation and President Trump has been briefed on the

latest North Korean activity.

It's unclear where the missiles were intended to hit.

But in view of Secretary of State Tillerson's praise for the regime's recent "restraint"

in its weapons programs, observers will be closely watching the response from Washington.

is not right for dialogue with Pyongyang and that increased pressure is needed.

Korea's missile launches - Duration: 2:16.

The U.S. Pacific Commad has made revisions to its assessment of North Korea's missile

launches conducted on Saturday.

The revised assessment states that although the missiles' target is unclear,... the timing

of the launch sends a clear message in that it comes amid the ongoing Seoul-Washington

military drills and after Washington had noted Pyongyang's restraint in its weapons program.

Moon, Abe agree to impose maximum pressure on N. Korea - Duration: 1:11.

President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have agreed to impose the maximum

possible pressure on North Korea to force the regime back to talks.

The two held a phone conversation this morning regarding North Korea's latest missile provocation.

Let's take a look at what President Moon's spokesperson had to say just a while ago.

(KOREAN) President Moon said the launch of an intermediate

range ballistic missile over Japan was an outrageously violent act against its neighbor.

He told Prime Minister Abe that his government had convened a meeting of the National Security

Council standing committee to condemn the North's provocation.

The president also mentioned how South Korea staged an armed protest by ordering four fighter

jets to conduct a live-bombing drill,... they were the most intense responses ever against

North Korea.

( nsc 8 )

Pyongyang's latest missile test was the 14th of its kind since the turn of the year.

According to the Blue House, President Moon and Abe also agreed to collaborate to push

for a new UN Security Council resolution with sanctions that are more effective against

the regime.

Seoul-Washington to continue cooperation on punishing N. Korea for missile launch - Duration: 0:43.

South Korea and the U.S. pledged continued cooperation on North Korea following the regime's

latest provocation.

Seoul's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, during

their phone conversation, strongly condemned North Korea's intermediate-range ballistic

missile launch,... and expressed disappointment toward the regime's decision as Seoul and

Washington had said there could be change in their hardline stance if the North refrains

from further provocations.

Minister Kang and Secretary Tillerson agreed to continue working together at every opportunity

including the UN General Assembly scheduled for next month.

And following those missile launches,...

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says Washington will continue to seek a peaceful

resolution... despite the regime's provocative actions.

Let's listen in.

"We're going to continue our peaceful pressure campaign as I have described it, working with

allies, working with China as well to see if we can bring the regime in Pyongyang to

the negotiating table, with a view to begin dialogue on a different future for the Korean

Peninsula and for North Korea".

Tillerson said previously... that while the U.S. prefers a diplomatic approach,... it's

prepared to respond with military force, if necessary.

He also underscored the important role of China and Russia,... in diffusing the crisis,

saying they bear "unique and special responsibility"... for North Korea's growing threat to regional

N. Korea's new missiles could be aimed at S. Korea's THAAD system - Duration: 2:00.

The South Korean military has revealed that the missiles fired by North Korea on Saturday

flew for about 250 kilometers... with an altitude of 50 kilometers.

That means they were longer range than the regime's conventional multi-rocket launchers,...

but flew lower than its ballistic missiles.

Based on this, watchers say they could be new missiles... aimed at getting past the

defenses of the THAAD system that's expected to be temporarily deployed soon.

Kim Hyo-sun reports.

The missiles fired by North Korea on Saturday in response to the joint military exercises

between Seoul and Washington flew about 250 kilometers before landing in the East Sea.

The South Korean military said the missiles hit a maximum altitude of 50 kilometers.

While these missiles had a maximum altitude similar to that of a 300 millimeter multi-rocket

launcher,... they traveled about 50 kilometers further than a conventional 300 millimeter

multi-rocket launcher.

Based on its analysis,... the South Korean military said Pyongyang was likely testing

a new type of 300-millimeter rocket.

Seoul's analysis comes while the U.S. Pacific Command assessed that the North fired short-range

ballistic missiles.

While it's unprecedented for the allies to have differing views on the type of missiles

launched by the regime,... pundits agree they were aimed at undermining South Korea's THAAD

missile defense system,... as it would struggle to cope with missiles flying at low altitudes.

(KOREAN) "It's more difficult to catch a fast, low-flying

ball than a ball tossed high up in the air, and the same applies for the anti-missile

system.

The THAAD system wouldn't be much use if a missile flew in at a low altitude and was

sudden."

Experts generally agree that, if North Korea launches low altitude, longer range missiles,

it would be difficult for THAAD to successfully detect and intercept them.

N. Korea continues provocations to increase leverage card with Washington: Experts - Duration: 2:12.

North Korea's missile launch this morning could dash hopes in Washington that the regime

was backing down and might be moving toward talks.

Some say it's a negotiating tactic.

Also, possibly a response to defense drills by South Korea and the U.S.

Our Connie Kim takes a closer look at the North's intentions.

It was just a week ago that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson praised North Korea

for showing restraint in its provocative behavior and expressed hope that this could be the

moment Washington was waiting for to start setting the stage for peace talks with Pyongyang.

In that sense, the Trump administration has clearly dropped key preconditions set by its

predecessor, such as having Pyongyang commit to denuclearization before any talks can take

place, and instead, has offered to sit at the negotiation table by merely having the

regime halt its missile launches.

But, despite warnings and proposals for talks, North Korea went ahead and launched three

short-range ballistic missiles over the weekend, followed by Tuesday's launch of an intermediate-range

ballistic missile.

(Korean/ ) "North Korea seems to be assessing that it's

not a bad decision to instigate tension on the Korean peninsula in order to raise its

leverage with Washington for talks while at the same time completing its missile program."

At the same time, Pyongyang's ongoing missile launches are also seen as the regime's unwillingness

to sit down with Seoul for talks.

(English/ ) "It can negotiate with any other country in

the world from the position of strength so why bother taking side steps by considering

proposal by the Moon government dealing with issues that are not really essential for North

Korea's pursuit of security assurance and major economic prosperity?"

For now, talks either with Seoul or Washington don't seem to be taking place any time soon.

What remains to be seen, however, is how the U.S. will pressure China in reining in Pyongyang's

nuclear ambitions and how Seoul will exert diplomatic influence in peacefully stopping

the North's missile provocations and nuclear weapons ambition.

S. Korea to watch October commemorations for signs N. Korea is ready for talks - Duration: 1:56.

North Korea's continued provocations made it even more challenging for the fairly young

Moon administration to start dialogue with Pyongyang.

However, Seoul is giving the regime another chance: stop provocations until October and

there could be denuclearization talks.

Connie Kim has the full story.

South Korea will be keeping an eye until October to see if circumstances become optimal for

talks with North Korea.

(English) "Diplomatic space could be made for dialogue

with North Korea on its denuclearization if the situation on the Korean peninsula is under

control by October-namely the tenth anniversary of the October 4th inter-Korean summit declaration

or the founding of the Korean Workers' Party."

" 10 , 10.4 10 10.10 ."

During a press briefing on Thursday on the administration's diplomatic achievements,

Minister Kang also highlighted that the ministry will stay alert as Pyongyang is prone of marking

important dates and anniversaries with provocations.

The top diplomat also reiterated Seoul's plans to gear efforts in thawing icy inter-Korean

relations.

(English) "Apart from denuclearization talks under the

right conditions,.. the government will gear efforts in easing tensions on the Korean peninsula

and resolving pending humanitarian issues."

( .)

But,… at the same time Kang reiterated the country's stance: Seoul will respond sternly

to any provocation with adequate measures.

And following such policy, Seoul plans to lay out a new set of unilateral sanctions

on Pyongyang following the new UN Security Council resolution 2371.

(standup) "Minister Kang emphasized that it will continue

to cooperate with Washington in peacefully resolving North Korea's nuclear issues.

But with Pyongyang indicating it will not discuss its nuclear programs with Seoul, there

are concerns South Korea could be left out from the most important process: North Korea's

denuclearization talks.

S. Korea to watch October commemorations for signs N. Korea is ready for talks - Duration: 0:43.

South Korea's Foreign Minister says diplomatic space could be made for dialogue with North

Korea on its denuclearization -- that's if the situation on the Korean peninsula is under

control by October when the North marks a number of key dates.

Speaking to the foreign ministry's press corps on Monday, Minister Kang Kyung-wha said Seoul

will keep an eye on major commemorations in North Korea such as the anniversaries of the

founding of the Korean Workers' Party and of the October 4th inter-Korean summit declaration.

North Korea has track record of provocative actions on or around such dates.

The minister noted that possibility, and added that South Korea will be seeking response

measures for any move the regime may make.

Bladedance of Elementalers (Japanese: 精霊使いの剣舞ブレイドダンス Hepburn: Seirei Tsukai no Bureidodansu - Duration: 9:11.

Welcome to my channel, I will now introduce and summarize a little about the anime Bladedance

of Elementalers Category: Action, School, Comedy, Ecchi, Harem, Fantasy, Love, Super

Bladedance of Elementalers: In a world where spirits exist and only pure maidens have the

privilege of contracting with the spirits, maidens from noble families gather at Areishia

Spirit Academy where they are trained to become elementalists.

Enter Kamito Kazehaya, a male teenager who does something thought impossible – he contracts

with a spirit.

Being the only male elementalist in the world (and only the second male elementalist in

1000 years) he received an invitation from the Academy's director, Greyworth Ciel Mais,

to come to Areisha Spirit Academy.

Upon arriving, he loses his way in the spirit forest and stumbles upon a girl named Claire

Rouge purifying herself in a lake.

She is, understandably, upset and embarrassed and attacks him.

He is able to avoid the worst of her wrath and finds out that she intends to contract

with a sealed sword spirit.

He accompanies her so that she can guide him out of the forest once she has accomplished

her goal.

Claire attempts to contract with the sealed sword spirit but fails causing it to run wild.

In order to save her life, Kamito forms a contract with the sword spirit himself, much

to Claire's chagrin.

Disregarding the fact that he saved her life, she accuses him of stealing her spirit and

insists that he atone for it by becoming her contracted spirit.

Characters: Kamito Kazehaya: The world's only known male

elementalist.

He forms an incomplete contract with the sealed sword spirit, Est, while responding to a summon

from the director of Areishia Spirit Academy.

Before being summoned to the Academy he was raised as an elite assassin by the Institutional

School where he was conditioned to become an emotionless shell in order to make him

a more controllable (and disposable) tool.

However, his life changed after meeting the spirit, Restia.

She taught him about the world outside of the school, and, in the process, rekindled

his emotions.

The Institutional School was attacked and destroyed by a rampant fire spirit which allowed

him to escape, along with the sealed artifact, a special ring that belonged to the first

"Demon King", imprisoning Restia.

An encounter with Greyworth, further changed his life.

Three years before, Kamito participated in the Blade Dance in drag under the name Ren

Ashbell and won the title of the Strongest Blade Dancer.

He had long hair at the time, and an outfit (for girls) from what is believed to be his

homeland as his disguise.

Since Ren Ashbell is such a prominent role model to many of the maidens at the Academy,

Kamito tries to avoid using his better-known techniques to avoid revealing that everyone's

favorite idol is really a boy, usually unsuccessfully.

His attempts at subterfuge are aided by the fact that, as Ren, he wielded Restia (a black

sword) with his left hand (now covered with a glove), and he now wields Est (a white sword)

with his right hand.

Kamito's life at the Academy is rather taxing because of The girls' feelings for him, coupled

with wildly exaggerated rumors and misconceptions about him.

The result of these hijinks is that Kamito becomes known as the 'Demon King of the Night'

(and eventually daylight and noon).

The irony of the situation is that if Kamito had actually done even a fraction of the perverted

stuff he is rumored to, neither he or the girls he 'soiled' would be pure enough to

use their contracted Spirits.

Despite this inconsistency, the rumors about him are considered fact by numerous Intelligence

agencies including the Draconian Empire who first wanted to castrate him to protect innocent

maidens, and then later changed their minds to wanting to seduce him, with the hope that

the resulting children would inherit his abilities.

Claire Rouge: Claire is the younger daughter of Duke Elstein.

She inherited the Elstein fire-red hair and eyes as well as the family aptitude for Fire

magic.

The Elsteins were grand nobles who had served the royal family for generations ever since

the founding of the Ordesian Empire.

Four years ago her elder sister, Rubia, the Queen serving under the Fire Elemental Lord,

snatched the strongest flame spirit, Laevateinn, and disappeared.

Outraged by this betrayal, the Fire Elemental Lord burned parts of the Empire and would

not allow any fires other than those of Flame Spirits to exist within the Empire.

Ren Ashbell's Blade Dance the following year appeased the Fire Lord's anger enough that

he stopped randomly burning the Empire.

As the result of that incident, the Elstein duchy and fortune were seized and the duke

and his wife were imprisoned in Balsas's prison.

Although Claire was not sent to prison, the Imperial family demanded the return of Scarlet,

her elemental spirit.

However, Greyworth interceded on her behalf, saying that Claire would become an excellent

elementalist at her Academy.

After Claire accepted Greyworth's offer, she dropped the Elstein family name and attends

Areishia Spirit Academy under the alias Claire Rouge.

Initially a meek and shy child Claire has strengthened herself in order to win the Blade

Dance and find out the reasons for her sister's actions.

Due to being ostracized as the sister of the "Calamity Queen", she has little trust in

anybody other than Scarlet.

Claire has studied intensely to become one of the top students of the school and become

an able strategist.

Her contract symbol with Scarlet is on the back of her right hand and looks like a white/red

whirling mass of flames.

Although she treats Kamito as her 'slave spirit' as punishment for contracting Est in her place,

she seems to enjoy books where the male character enslaves the female protagonist and even has

dreams of being Kamito's slave.

Like many other maidens, she was inspired by Ren Ashbell's Blade Dance three years ago.

She has suspicions of Kamito being Ren Ashbell after observing him fight using the same moves

as Ren and seeing him cross-dress during the current Blade Dance.

Ellis Fahrengart: A daughter of Duke Fahrengart who's the head of the militant Fahrengart

family.

She has contracted with Simurgh, a wind spirit who appears as a large hawk with a waffe form

of a spear.

Her contract symbol is on the back of her right hand and resembles the view of a tornado

seen from directly above in white/green.

The Duke Fahrengart is Ellis' father, who wants her to marry Kamito and raise kids.

Ellis also has a two years-elder adopted sister, Velsaria Eva Fahrengart.

Ellis is also the captain of the Sylphid Knights; a group of students, who help protect the

Academy, enforce discipline and morals, handle wild spirits and the recently opened Astral

Gates in the forest.

Although initially vehemently against Kamito's presence at the Academy (as the only other

known male elementalist was the demon king) she gradually warms up to and falls in love

with him.

Ellis has a strict and firm personality, but has the heart of an innocent maiden which

her close friends and comrades in the Sylphid Knights take advantage of;– she was once

tricked her into believing a risqué outfit was the new dress uniform.

It's unknown if she had a specific wish for the Blade Dance, although she may have entered

to save her sister Velsaria as well as to bring honor to her family and country.

After seeing Kamito fight numerous times she is suspicious of how similar his fighting

style is to Ren Ashbell's, but is fooled by an article listing Ashbell's believed "preferences"

which are different from his due to him giving vague yes/no answers back then to cover his

voice cracking.

In Volume 13, she gets a big boost to her divine power and recovery ability after kissing

Kamito on the lips.

The boost was powerful enough to heal several days' worth of injuries in one day and enlarged

Sigmurgh enough to enable him to carry two people instead of just one.

Rinslet Laurenfrost: She is one of the daughters of the Laurenfrost family.

While a prominent family it was slightly lesser to that of the Elsteins before their fall.

Rinslet personality is that of a showoff that enjoys the spotlight chance permitting, but

not at the expense of doing her duty.

Despite that is still a shy girl who hides her concern for others and unlike many never

treated Claire any differently from when they were friends to Rubia becoming the Calamity

Queen.

She was chosen by the Laurenfrost guardian spirit Fenrir to be his contractor.

Due to being contracted with him she is very skilled in Ice magic and an accomplished sniper

with his Waffe form of a bow.

Like the others has the heart of an innocent maiden who falls deeply for Kamito.

Also like the others this does not stop her from striking hard with magic (and holding

him completely at fault) if she catches him in an embarrassing situation with another

girl.

She is an expert in domestic matter due to her maid Carol being completely lacking in

skills of being a Laurenfrost maid except for being cute (and able to trick Rinslet

easily).

Rinslet enters the Blade Dance with the wish for the Water Lord to forgive her sister Judia

and break the eternal ice curse cast upon her for what was thought to be a mistake during

a kagura dance to the Water Lord.

Similar to Ellis she gets a boost to her divine power after kissing Kamito in Volume 13.

Position in team is that of Sniper/Support as her Ice Magic and Bow attacks are best

suited for mid/long range battle while extremely disadvantageous at close melee range.

Contract symbol is on back of her right hand and resembles a white/blue complex snowflake

with two sides cropped off by the edge of the symbol.

While trying to save a spirit after the Blade Dance she gets another contract symbol on

the back of her left hand that looks like a white/blue ice rose.

Fianna Ray Ordesia: She is the second princess of the Ordesian Empire and the chosen contractor

of the family guardian spirit, Georgios.

Her contract symbol is white/gold in color and located just above her cleavage.

It is discovered later that she was using pads and the family bloodstone she stole to

appear bigger.

Fianna has a playful personality with a risque sense of humour that earned her the nickname

Perverted Princess.

She is aware that Kamito is Ren Ashbell due to him having saved her from a rogue spirit

while wielding Restia three years previously.

She demanded his true name and made a promise to meet him again.

When she enrolls in the Academy, Greyworth asks Kamito's team to act as Fianna's bodyguard

and Kamito does not recognize her at first due to trauma and Restia's magic clouding

his memories around the time of his wish.

Fianna was raised as a typical potential Queen candidate maiden being trained in seclusion

but she has been unable to summon Georgios since Rubia used the just stolen Levateinn

to take out Georgios in one strike.

As a result she was ostracized as the "Lost Queen", practically disowned, and treated

harshly by not only her family, but the family servants and other nobles as well.

Especially in regards to her two year-older brother, Arneus Ray Ordesia, who she considers

cruel and unfit to be the next emperor as well as anyone getting what they deserve if

they crown him.

As with many other girls of her generation, seeing Ren Ashbell's Blade Dance three years

ago gave her the strength to go on.

Greyworth and a few other teachers are aware that she 'cheated' on her entrance exam by

using flash stones (magic stones containing a spirit anyone can use but is expensive and

one use only) and that she is unable to function as an elementalist, but the headmistress allowed

her to enroll regardless, hoping that she will be able to regain her abilities.

Fianna joins Team Scarlet, and with the support of Kamito and the others, is able to summon

Georgios again.

Her purpose in entering the Blade Dance is to regain her ability as an elementalist.

Due to lack of combat training, she is unable to enter direct combat except for summoning

and sending Georgios.

After learning how to summon a waffe she is also able to cast the spell known as "Save

the Queen" which establishes an area around where the waffe has been stabbed into the

ground as her territory which shields those inside from enemy attacks as well as heal

wounds and replenish divine power through the Holy Attribute.

She acts as the team's healer but she has to be in skin contact with Kamito to heal

him due to his resistance to Holy magic, which she does quite willingly and forwardly.

While she cherishes the friends who did not abandon her, she wishes to remain with Team

Scarlet as they fully accepted her, even after discovering she was initially faking being

an elementalist (especially as she is very much in love in Kamito.)

Terminus Est: Est is Kamito's second contracted spirit.

Due to his guilt (for making another spirit contract) and refusal to abandon Restia, the

contract was only partially completed so she can only manifest 10% of her power.

Therefore, unlike other spirits, she can't return to Astral Zero to recharge and so spends

a large amount of time sleeping in sword form to recover her strength.

This also means Kamito can't summon her with the Spirit Seal on his hand as summoning only

works if the spirit is in Astral Zero.

She has long, white hair, blue eyes, and in human form looks to be about 12-13 years old.

She is usually stoic (speaking softly in a monotone), but she likes to be praised and

having Kamito pat her on the head.

Est is especially jealous of Restia.

In an effort to "please" Kamito she has read some of Claire's X-rated books and wears unusual

costumes from Fianna's collection to bid him good morning.

For some reason Est has no problem appearing naked as long as her legs are covered, usually

with knee socks.

In the past, she was contracted to Areishia Idriss, the Sacred Queen who defeated the

Demon King, but her unique ability which destroys curses unfortunately builds up her own curse

until it activates turning her wielder into Spirit Crystal.

This is because she is not a true Holy Sword but rather a Demonic Sword.

After years of daily fighting, her curse finally took its toll and, to her horror, Est witnessed

Areishia turn into crystal right in front of her.

Afterwards that she sealed herself in the Demon King's armory and refused to make a

contract with anyone to prevent the same thing from happening again.

After her memory was restored, not wanting to curse Kamito too, she sealed herself away

again but he refused saying that he would accept her curse and destiny even if it would

one day lead to his own destruction.

Restia Ashdoll: Kamito's first contracted spirit.

She was sealed in the ring of Sulaimon and taught Kamito everything including about the

world beyond the Institutional School, and giving him emotions as well as forming a Spirit

Contract with him without permission.

After the Institutional School was destroyed Kamito took the ring and searched for a way

to release her, eventually leading him to Greyworth who took an interest in him and

helped him to release her from the ring.

Afterwards she and Kamito took part in the Bladedance becoming the Strongest Bladedancer

and making a forbidden wish which corrupted her and made her disappear.

It's later revealed that she was one of the 72 pillars of the first Demon King and that

her job is to find, select, and raise a potential candidate as the next Demon King if she feels

that person is worthy of inheriting the title.

Kamito is the first potential candidate she has come into contact with who was not overwhelmed

by the Demon King's power within them.

Her personality is that of a mischievous, caring young woman fond of pranks but can

be deadly serious when the situation calls for it.

Like Est she cares very deeply for Kamito and is jealous that Est is also Kamito's contracted

spirit.

Restia's contract circle isn't described but is located on Kamito's left hand which he

usually covers with a leather glove.

As no two Spirit Contract symbols are alike this could expose his identity as Ren Ashbell

whose Spirit Contract symbol is as well known as Ashbell is.

Her elemental waffe is The Sword That Pierces Truth Vorpal Sword that looks like a black

greatsword with a red edge.

Her special power as a sword is releasing powerful black/purple lightning that destroys

almost everything it touches.

In human form she can disappear into shadows and shoot all the feathers from her wings

like darts, although using the latter prevents her from being able to fly until her wings

recover.

To ensure that she doesn't become the "Enemy of the World" she told Kamito to kill her

if she became someone other than herself.

Scarlet/Ortlinde: Scarlet is Claire's female contracted spirit that had been passed down

the Elstein family contracting only with those of her choosing.

Scarlet usually takes the form of a flaming red house cat or, when in waffe form, that

of a whip with Fire attributes.

It is later revealed that Scarlet is in fact a powerful fire spirit able to take human

form, but that her true name, Ortlinde, was forgotten.

Ortlinde, also known as the Scarlet Valkyrie, appears as a young cat girl garbed in flames

who wields a flame scythe and is able to conjure fireballs which are immensely more powerful

than Claire's.

Due to her isolation as Rubia's younger sister, Claire developed a habit of keeping Scarlet

around for companionship.

Scarlet is fond of Kamito because he feeds her and Ortlinde considers him to be Claire's

master because of Claire's dreams involving him.
