Hi, so, today I wanted to talk about
Hi, so, today I wanted to talk about
something I had mentioned it in my last video, which was:
the similarities between the gems
the similarities between the gems in
Steven Universe and to their actual gems
Steven Universe and to their actual gems
and, um, let me just start by saying that
I'm sorry *that* you hear the white noise in the background
I'm sorry *that* you hear the white noise in the background
it's my laptop fan working, um,
it's my laptop fan working, um,
I don't know how to edit that out
I'm really sorry
I'll try to stop saying "um" so much
and, if you hear any kitties,
sorry about that as well
and if you hear any noise
so,
that's what that box is
Okay, let's get on with this
So, I wanted to talk about Pearl because I thought she'd to start with
um
there I go again ~ *nervous laugh*
If you don't know,
Pearls are mostly made-up of
calcite and aragonite
So, um, aragonite is basically just calcite
that has been put under
a lot of pressure but at a very low temperature
and it can form *sedimentary* as well
and it can form *sedimentary* as well
and it can form *sedimentary* as well
but, uh,
mostly they do it under these
high pressure and low temperatures, which
happens to *occur* underwater
happens to *occur* underwater
So, um, as you can imagine they show up a lot in
PEARLS :D
If you don't know,
Pearls begin to form when some sand or
bacteria enters the mollusc shell
bacteria enters the mollusc shell
and, uh, then
the mollusc will trap it
in its pearl sac
Not sure if that's the technical name, but I think that it actually
might be what they call it
So, they trap it there and then
the mollusc will begin to release the calcite
as well as some of its own
DNA, so some of its tissues
*complex proteins*, as well, in with the calcite
so its kind of putting some of itself into it, which I thought was pretty cool
we'll talk about how this all ties into Pearl
and her powers
after I'm done with this explanation
*stammering for words*
Over time, some of the calcite begins to turn into
aragonite
and
there are some traces of argonite
from the
mollusc shell as well as from the environment
however, mostly, it happens from
the calcite
in the pearl
sitting it its shell for a long time
under high pressures and low temperatures
So, um,
How does this all connect to Pearl?
You may be wondering
well, from what we can see of her powers, she has,
of course, her holograms that also have mass, which is
kind of funny when she's a hologram with mass that can produce holograms with mass
just not as well rendered as they, *the crystal gems*, are
She also
manipulates water on a very small scale
from what we have seen. She can
create fog or mist and we also see her manipulate sand
create fog or mist and we also see her manipulate sand
Now, all of these things
if you think about it
they all are, kind of, apart of her being
Another thing is that
aragonite is something
that is purely decorational
and is pretty much only of interest to scientists
and collectors, which
*brow raise* Pearls (both kinds) are decorative, so ~
kind of fits there
and, um, if you view calcite
there's a decent amount of them, so I'll read them from this
handy dandy book I have (can't believe I actually said "handy dandy" xD)
which
is
Rocks and Minerals
Simon and
Schuster's guide to Rocks and Minerals
which is as very good book
I recommend it.
It's the best one I've found on rocks and minerals so far
and it says that calcite's
"clear crystals were formerly used as polarizing prisms
for" uh *stammers*
"petrological microscopes"
"Compact masses have a variety of uses,
especially in building"
They're also used in metallurgy
and "the manufacturing of fertilizers"
and "the manufacturing of fertilizers"
Looks like they're also used in the chemical industry."Other uses include
marble for sculpture,
lithographic stones for printing and
loose earthy masses
as powders for polishing
and as fillers in the rubber and paint industries
and as fillers in rubber and paint industries
Now, for the, uh, calcite this is
taking into account a bunch of different
types of calcite, like limestone
and other such ones. Like marble for example.
So, some of this could be, kind of,
personal to *a* specified type of calcite
so something to keep in mind
To try and sum up a long explanation
I think gets her powers
from
the environment
and what her stone actually
*made of*. If you think about it pearls are just decorative
They aren't really used for anything else. They are just
decorative
*stammers*
As for her (Pearl) purpose
in life basically being decorative and just the
you know, be there and
*trails off*
Her other powers would
relate to her in that she forms in the water
and sometimes with sand
Most people think that it (pearls) always forms
when sand gets into them (mollusc), however that's true
It only sometimes happens because of that
usually it's just bacteria
that irritates the mollusc and then it starts to begin
but, yeah, so, usually they are connected to sand
and they, you know,
probably, usually, on the floor
so they're probably sitting on a bunch of sand
I can see why they would make her powers
to manipulate water and sand on a very small scale
The hologram, I think it relates to her
water ability
and we can see with Lapis that she
has water abilities and she's able
to reflect and show the past
and, um,
I think this can also relate to
Pearl's fog ability
how she can
manipulate the fog and then, kind of, create
illusions, but, of course these illusions have mass
and can fight and whatnot, but
still I think it's just going on that
and adding a bit of fun to it
*Actually I think it connects to the conchin that goes into the making of pearls*
It also
seems that there's a running theme with water ones
having really good memories
We've seen with Aquamarine that she has a *perfect* memory
and Lapis seems to as well
and ~
Pearl!
so, that might be a running theme with water gems (future vision could also be seen as similar and Sapphire has ice abilities)
maybe something to keep an eye out for
So, tell me what you think. I hope this made sense and
*nervous laughter* wasn't too confusing
Sorry if it was
Tell me what you think
Did you find this interesting? Was this boring?
Let me know in the comments
Thank you. Have a good night
