- In today's gospel, we hear Peter acknowledge
that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.
As we prepare for this liturgy, let us open our hearts
to encounter the same Christ who is present among us.
His church gathered in his name.
Lord Jesus, you are the Christ, the son of the living God.
Lord have mercy.

Lord God heavenly King, oh God Almighty father.
Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten son.
Lord God, lamb of God son of the father.
You take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the holy one,
you alone are the lord.
You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ
with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the father, Amen.
- Let us pray.
Oh God to who cause the minds of the faithful
to unite in a single purpose,
grant your people to love what you command
and to desire what you promise.
That amid the uncertainties of this world,
our hearts may be fixed on that place
where true gladness is found.
Throughout the Lord Jesus Christ your son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.

- [Congregation] Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
- A couple years ago,
I was the walking at town center,
town square down on the strip and I went to my Apple Store
as I always go to my Apple Store
and then as I walked around
the pavement there on the outside,
there were some kiosks and there was a kiosk with
a young Indian gentleman there
and he sold the little cases for cell phones
and all that and you know,
I've gone there to buy stuff from him
and you know and he's just a really nice guy.
He'd say, well it's it's $25 but for you 20.
So you want to buy.
They're bargaining with you in this
and so I've been there several times
and then of course months went where
I didn't need anything so I hadn't been there.
And so I was going there again
and as I'm walking around the sidewalk,
his eyes caught mine and he smiled
and then so I went to the little kiosk
and he said, "I was hoping you were going to come back."
And I said why.
No I'm just in regular clothes.
He didn't know that I was a priest
but he said, "Do you do you read for church on TV?"
(laughs)
And I said, "Yes, sometimes I do."
He goes, "I thought that was you.
"I was flipping the channels on a Sunday morning
"and when I looked," and he says
"I think I know that guy."
(laughs)
And it's amazing.
I mean here was this young Hindu gentleman
who was flipping the channels
and there so there was a connection
and so it gave us the opportunity to talk about our faiths,
his Hindu faith and my faith
and it was a nice little thing but it struck me that
even through this ministry,
just how people will recognize, they see
and so in today's gospel, Jesus asks them.
Who do the disciples say that I am?
How do they recognize me?
Some say that he's this, that or the other thing
but Peter was the one who proclaimed,
you are the Christ, the son of the living God.
That was a great testimony of faith for Peter
and so Jesus then because he recognized the faith of Peter
and he said you are now rock.
Simon we're changing your name.
Peter, Petrus, which means rock
and you are the one on the foundation
that I will build my church.
You see he recognized something in Peter
and so Peter then recognized Christ
because God revealed that to him.
So for us, God reveals himself to us in many different ways
and it's up to us to see how God is revealing himself to us.
Sometimes in simple ways.
For that little Hindu gentleman.
He recognized something of God in me
because he saw me doing something holy on TV.
I recognized in him, God,
seeing the holiness of his simple life.
So God reveals himself to us in so many ways
and it's up to us to keep our eyes open
so that we can recognize him.
That's the secret, keeping our eyes open.
So the more we keep our eyes open
and the more we recognize Christ in others,
the more we grow in holiness
and the more we grow in holiness,
people will recognize Christ in us.
So today Jesus said to his disciples,
who do people say that the son of man is?
And so maybe for us, we ought to ask the question,
who do people say who we are?
Do they see in us Christ
by our words, by our actions?
Do they see in us disciples of the Lord?
That's the question we ask ourselves this week.
Hopefully we'll say yes,
and if you're like me, you know, sometimes
the light shines through us
and sometimes the darkness takes over too.
We're human beings and it's important for us then
to make sure that even those times
when we may not reflect Christ in our life,
that we can bring those moments to the Lord
and ask God to help us reflect him,
so that when people see us and we ask them,
who do people say that we are,
they can say disciples of the Lord.
Together we profess our faith using the Apostles' Creed.
