Hey what's up you guys! Welcome back to my channel
and welcome to my first episode of mukbang monday.
Today I have a very special guest! I have my mom and my aunt.
Hello! I'm Sophie's mom. Hi~~
Hello! I'm Sophie's aunt, I came from Korea!
Today we'll be making galbi bone soup
and I'm gonna be making it with my mom and my aunt because they're both really great cooks
and I think it's just the perfect way to start off mukbang mondays
so let's get the cookinn!
so first we'll have our fresh veggies
there's some green onions, regular onions, radish
squash, mushrooms, carrots
oh and under here there's some peppers
and then over here we have some dried shrimp
dried up anchovies. It looks kind of scary but it's very common in Korean dishes.
and then here we have garlic
some salt
tofu and glass noodles
so here we have some red pepper powder
and some fish sauce
and this is galbi which is a really popular korean bbq meat
you can use this in many ways
so we actually use this for bbq
um it comes like this but a big piece of meat right there.
so my mom pretty much chopped the meat portion off and we bbq'd it
instead of throwing these away, we like to re use them
so my mom boiled this, and it's all cleaned. we're gonna make this into a stew
and so if you ever eat galbi just don't throw away the bones
because you can use them for another recipe
so this is galbi and we'll be using this as well
put the anchovies and the shrimp in here so we're going to make the broth
and this is how typically a lot of Korean broths are made
just let that simma simma
just cover the lid and let it boil for about 5-6 minutes
now that it's boiling, you have to take it out
cause you just wanna use it for the broth. we're not using it you know, as a real ingredient
we're just taking the juices out of it
and then you'll get this really nice fish and shrimp broth
after that, you're just gonna throw these galbi bones in here
the broth is gonna get even richer
so you're gonna boil this for 5 minutes
we wait another 5 minutes
so now we're gonna take some fish sauce
we're just eyeballing it
that's like 2 tablespoons
and the fish sauce really adds a lot of flavor
Koreans use that a lot in their stew
1/4 teaspoon of salt
and then goju which is a hot pepper paste
she just gone go for it
she just added like..what was that? I don't even know
just go boom boom boom boom boom
oh maybe 1 teaspoon. 1 teaspoon?
that was more!
1 teaspoon and half more
after that we're gonna add the radish
the hardest vegetable goes first
so the radish always goes in first
because it takes the longest to soften
2-3 minutes
in the meantime, i'll just give a little test taste
I've always wanted to do this when I had my own cooking show
mmmhm!
now the squash
oh mushrooms, add the carrots
2 tablespoons
and then add the tofu
green peppers
and then the green onions
salt bae
mkay and then at the very end you're gonna add the glass noodles
just right on top
Because they cook really fast, right mom?
it's like literally a few seconds and they're ready
my mom wants me to taste it
Add some salt
a little bit of salt
we never really go by measurements
alright and we're here at my dinner table
and we have our finished galbi bone soup
and my mom made fresh kimchi today. My mom and my aunt
fresh kimchi, radish kimchi, and cucumber kimchi
It's yummy
Okay, I'm going to ask some questions as we eat
I asked you guys on twitter, to send any questions that you have for my mom and aunt
and got a few of them so..
I'll be asking them right now
When Sophie first introduced Silas,
I looked at him and my thoughts were...
I wished that you met someone who was Korean because we are Korean
at first, but
your dad and I wanted to give him a chance because you chose him
So we decided to meet him first and then have an opinion about him
that's what we thought. but now.. looking at Silas
I remember the first time we met, he had on a nice suit and his hair cut
We were meeting at a restaurant and he opened the door for me, I went "oooh"
Why didn't he open the door for me??
I got a good look at him and thought, "wow what a handsome guy"
and he's so nice and smart
Couple months pass
and I realized he always wore long sleeves so I asked,
"Why are you wearing long sleeves when it's hot outside? Take it off."
it was because he had tattoos all over and I was so shocked
I was thinking "no, this can't be it"
but he said his friend had a tattoo shop and wanted to test it out on him
I thought to myself..since I don't have son. If Silas was my son, would I have been understanding?
I probably would have been
That's why I call you guys "gangster couple" Si and Sophie, gangster couple
Sophie has a back tattoo as well
oh yeahhh gangstaa couple!
But he has a kind heart so of course I think of him as my son
at least now I do, now
your son? congratulations
Okay Aunt! How about you??
You want me to talk about it too?
When I first saw Si...
Did you first see him in my videos?
I've seen him in your videos, heard about him from your mom, saw him on FaceTime
I didn't care about the tattoos, I had a good first impression of him
Aunt, because you're a bit more younger, you're more understanding about tattoos
I understand too
I understand
He does really have a lot of tattoos though
He can't get anymore
No, there's nowhere else for him to get more!
Except for his face
Tear drops on his face
I'm kidding!
Promise me no more tattoos
I like you guys together, I wish the best for you both
First time, I didn't know you were on YouTube
Yeah I was in my room with the doors locked
I was so stressed because your make up was so intense in high school
You always gave me an attitude about it
I was so stressed out but I knew you were going through puberty
We fought a lot because of that
Yes we did fight a lot,
I didn't think you were on YouTube. I didn't think it was something you were pursuing seriously
When I was in LA for college I called you and said I have to tell you something,
so I told you that a while ago I started filming videos in my room.
I told you that I needed a better camera and asked if you would buy it for me please?
By then I thought you and your sister had to do what you loved, what you wanted to do
parents are normally saying you have to be a doctor or a lawyer but if that is not what you wanted to pursue
then it puts a lot of stress on you so I just wanted to you be happy.
Appreciate it
That's a good way of thinking
If I didn't think that way when we were all back in VA, you wouldn't have been out here going to school.
I always wanted to push you to do better and go to school and do what you love
If it wasn't for my mom there would be no videos!
When did you and mom talk about my YouTube?
When Sophie was in school, she filmed a house tour and back then her cheeks were so big and young,
that was when I really liked what I saw
After hearing you out, I thought wow, this is not a bad job
this is not a bad idea, it's a different generation
Later on, I thought it was a good idea
There weren't many YouTube job opportunities back then so naturally you were worried
Yeah my first time, I was like what is YouTube?? That's what I thought.
But now, I want to thank you because you work so hard
When we first moved here and all of our family was still in Korea, it was hard, we didn't speak any English
Back then, I would cry every time I saw an airplane.
Whenever a plane would pass in the sky, she would cry
We would write letters to keep in touch
Why did you come to America?
Your dad came here so I followed him
Why did he come?
Your grandmother and aunt came, we came to better our lives.
It was really hard in the beginning but then you and your sister were born.
As you got bigger, I realized I'm out here far away with my family, so we need to do the best we can.
I can truly say we worked hard
Our first house was so small, second house was a medium size
But when you and dad first came to America, you didn't have a lot of money
Yeah we had to start all over so we didn't have a lot of money,
but we worked so hard we slowly started to make money.
Aunt, did you miss my mom?
Yes, I was in school when she left. We would hand write each other letters in the beginning because
our cell phones weren't as nice as this.
So we wrote letters, and talked on the phone sometimes, but now we talk on KaKaoTalk and Facebook everyday.
Dad always complains about it now
So mom, how many siblings do you have?
2 brothers and 2 sisters, me, so total of 5
We say our hellos and I ask "have you eaten?"
She's always like "eat more, eat more, do you want more?"
My aunt always greets me like "Sophhieee~~"
Yes, that's right because we don't get to see each other often so I'm excited
Yea, because we don't see each other a lot.
I really don't like it, it has caused me so much stress, I just wanted to die (being sarcastic)
Mommm!
I just don't like it.
At first when Sophie got that tattoo, she was separated from her mom so she couldn't tell her (distance wise)
so later on when Sophie came to visit Korea, we go to the spa and she's like "I have to tell you something"
she puts a towel on her back so her mom couldn't see and showed me the tattoo.
she confessed to her aunt first
I looked at it and I saw the tiger and dragon together, it was so big I was surprised.
But then I thought now a days, a lot of young people do that.
Even Kpop stars get them
Yeah you're right
But yours is a bit big, if it was smaller I would like it more
Yeah you're right
But yes, in the beginning I was a little shocked.
When we were at the Korean spa, you were trying to cover it up
My mom took a small towel and just tried to cover me
Thank you so so much for loving Sophia and supporting her for all of these years. and always being interested in her.
And as her mom I want to thank you so much!
Mom always need to say a longer message
I just want to say thank you for loving her too. Sophie's such a hard worker, so kind and pretty
Please continue to love her, thank you thank you!
