Hello, and welcome to the latest episode of BrawlTalk.
I'm so excited to be here with you today.
With me on the show, we have Powerbang, from Powerbang Gaming.
- Hello, thanks for having me. - And The Rum Ham.
Glad to be here.
We have so much stuff to go over.
There are new game modes. There's a new Brawler.
Chips and Elixir are dead.
We got a brand new upgrade system, and so much more to talk about.
That's crazy. I can't wait to see what's new.
We've been burning the midnight oil playing the build when we had it,
and I can't think of anything I don't like.
Let's dive in!
Ryan, Powerbang and I have so many questions.
- The first is... - Let me stop you.
I know what it will be,
and this update doesn't have Android, doesn't have global release.
We are not ready yet.
There are a lot of huge changes in this update, and we want to see
how they work out before thinking of global or Android release.
It's definitely the biggest update in Brawl Stars history.
The very first thing that I want to talk about
is the new upgrade system.
This is a huge change.
Basically, everything in the way you upgrade your Brawler is different.
Chips and Elixir are gone,
and I'll explain where they went in a minute.
But, first, how is this going to work?
You still have Attack, Super, Health to upgrade,
and in each, you will have six upgrades.
So, Health, you have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Super and Attack, the same.
And you are going to get each of those upgrades
as an individual drop in the Brawl Boxes.
So, you could unlock number 6 first in a Brawl Box.
Interesting. So, there's a new currency,
and we're currently calling that "Bolts".
Right, it's a working name, but we are calling it "Bolts".
Those will also come in Brawl Boxes,
and with Bolts, you can upgrade them in order.
So, you can get number 1 with Bolts, then number 2, 3, 4, ...
But I could open them in a box, and then not...
If I open number 6,
I'll get that bonus even if I don't have 1 to 5 yet.
And the higher ones are worth more in the new build.
So, if I get a 6, it's a lot more Health
- than the level 1 version. - That's right.
So, you could get lucky and advance that Brawler much quicker.
Speaking of which,
as you move up the levels of these new ability trees,
at the top, there's a pretty big, special ability.
- Do you want to talk about that? - This is really cool.
I'm so excited about this.
Each Brawler is going to have their own, unique, special ability.
They're all different. Once you unlock 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...
Once you get them, there's a unique Special at the top.
And this one... For example, Colt runs faster.
- Passive, always? - Passive ability.
He always runs faster once you get it.
Jessie can now shoot at her Turret, and it heals the Turret.
That's crazy! One of my favorites...
My man, the legendary Spike...
He needs a bit of help right now. He's getting it. His Super...
You throw it on the ground, and it heals him
for a substantial amount of HP
per tick, every second.
So, if Spike's standing in his Super, he'll get healed up.
It's a lot of healing! It's a ton of heals.
You can completely change your playstyle,
and not throw the bomb at the opponent, but on the ground at yourself.
That's it! Rum Ham, what's your favorite?
I'd say I'm a big fan of pets, the little helpers.
Nita is one of my main characters.
I was excited about multiple Brawlers getting pets in a way.
Shelly gets a pet that is always with her.
Tara summons an alien when she uses her Super.
There's more than that. I'm not even listing all of them.
What I thought was cool... We've talked about personal benefits,
and some of the special abilities are actually team-wide benefits.
You have one that you really like.
Passive abilities, like Bo's for example,
you can see further in bushes. So instead of two tiles, it's five!
For all of your team!
For the whole team, it's a big advantage.
So with those Bounty maps, that are just all bushes...
Snake Prairie?
Yeah, your whole team can see more than twice as far as the other team.
You can set up ambushes, and it feels good,
because he's supposed to be a tracker or a hunter,
and you really feel like you're tracking the enemy team
with that special ability.
Exactly right.
Now, I want to go over something: Chips and Elixir. I said they're dead.
But you're not losing them, don't worry.
What will happen is:
you're going to be able to respec all of your Brawlers.
That means all of your Elixir will be converted into Bolts,
and then you'll be able to get the upgrades one by one again.
So you can actually...
if you're halfway leveled up on your Brawlers,
you can actually redeploy these resources elsewhere.
If you've maxed out Spike, but you don't like him anymore,
you could instead max out Piper.
Exactly. So feel free to spend all your Elixir now, don't worry.
With the update, you can redo it.
The first thing I noticed in the new Brawl Stars app is
brand new music, it looks different, really cool,
clean new UI. Tell us about that.
We spent some time and redid
pretty much the whole UI from the ground up.
There are more colors, it's brighter, it's newer,
and I think the artists have done an absolutely incredible job
making it look as good as it feels.
Rummy, do you like the new look?
It's so slick!
It's not just the map screen either. The Brawler UI looks better:
bigger faces and it's easier to see
your Brawlers and their upgrades.
- New leaderboards... - There are new ones.
Even the Shop is cleaner. Everything about it looks much cleaner.
I didn't realize how much I wanted this UI in place, but now it's awesome.
For me, Brawl Stars is taking steps as we move, hopefully,
closer and closer towards a global launch.
It's the polish that you like to see.
Also, I want to talk about Chips.
Chips are also going to go away. They will be converted into Gems.
Now we're talking! I got a few Chips stored up.
And we have two more changes coming to the Brawl Boxes.
First of all, this is a big one. You'll love this.
No more duplicates.
- Wow! Of anything? - Of anything.
- Even the abilities from the boxes? - No duplicates.
So if I buy an Epic Box, am I guaranteed to get an Epic that I don't have?
That's right.
We have two Epics right now, that means you can buy that box twice.
You'll get both, then you can't buy more.
That makes it much less expensive to get all the Brawlers that you want,
because there's no duplicate problem.
What about items? Will I get duplicate items or is that just singles?
Singles, no duplicate items, because now you can get one for each Brawler.
I won't do the maths, but that's...
- 6 times 3 times 16? - There's bonuses.
There's extra Nitro and special abilities. Many different things to unlock.
Will I get an item for a locked Brawler or only the unlocked ones?
The Brawler must be unlocked to get its upgrades.
I'm loving all that.
As a new player, you get Shelly upgrades immediately.
Exactly and even if you have a small budget to spend,
you know what you'll get for it. I think that's huge.
It's not a 5 dollar gamble anymore. It's 5 dollars, I want it, give it to me.
It's great. I love all the changes so far.
So, I can get Brawlers, Bolts, all sorts of upgrades,
and the coin doublers from the boxes.
Is there anything else new in the Brawl Boxes?
Yes, there is. So we'll have something called "Tickets" in the Brawl Boxes.
Tickets are a new resource
and these will be your ticket into a brand new game mode.
This is super cool. It's unranked,
and it's unranked
because we wanted something that didn't require perfect balancing.
It won't affect your Trophies and we can have more fun with it.
Two game modes in there.
They're a lot of fun!
Two new game modes. I'm having a blast with both of them.
Which one do we talk about first?
Let's talk about Boss Brawl.
Again, working title.
Working title, Boss Brawl. Essentially the concept is:
you have one out of six people who are in there that is a "Boss".
They have higher hit points, ten times the usual amount,
they shoot harder, run faster, lift more weight. They're on steroids!
And everyone else is trying to take them down as fast as possible.
Five on one gameplay!
There is some cool balance: the Boss never heals.
So you start off with...
- Tens of thousands of hit points. - Ninety thousand!
But you never heal and it's so satisfying!
I was running as Boss Shelly earlier and I did my Super,
that's more than the normal damage,
and just cleaned out the enemy team!
That was... Wow! I'm so good at this game!
Yeah, I was playing with Bo as the Boss
and I throw this mine and everybody goes poof!
Gone! Vaporized.
Extremely fun game mode,
definitely focuses more towards casual interaction, but so much fun.
Absolutely. And then we have one more.
It's called Co-op Survival. That's what we're calling it now.
Co-op Survival is:
you and two friends, three players on a team,
instead of playing against other players,
there's wave after wave of robots that come at you.
And there are a lot of different robots: melee, range,
quick little mouse-looking droids, and of course...
- Oh, yeah! - The Powerbang-sized boss bot!
Got a Powerbang head on a robot coming out.
Really cool game mode.
I prefer that one of the two, as far as casual game modes go.
I could see that getting super intense on streams
and getting a group of players together and try to get as far as you can.
It sounds reminiscent of some zombie game modes in other titles
and I know a lot of fun was had doing this type of fun game modes.
The goal here is to survive as long as you can with these waves coming.
It gets really hard, really quickly. The longest we lasted was four minutes.
- Yeah. - We started to develop strategies.
Some Brawlers clearly have some advantages in the mode,
and it'll be fun to strategize with your team and see how long you last.
Definitely. You know the Brawlers that penetrate or have area control,
the Dynamikes, the Barleys, seem to do well.
I was playing with Brock, and struggling mightily,
but it does get intense super fast,
and you get to the point where it's like: "Oh, my gosh".
You're overwhelmed. Every move counts.
When you die, you're like: "No, no!"
The bots aren't just trying to kill you; they try to take out your safe.
Like Heist mode, and you are trying to defend it.
The one thing I like is...
I'm a rewards guy. I like to get loot. I don't play for free.
I noticed you get a ton of coins from the ticketed mode, but there's no meter.
Is there a limit on the coins I can get from the modes?
Or is it as much as I have Tickets?
It may change, but, now, there's no limit.
As long as you have Tickets, you can keep playing and getting rewards.
So, one of the things that frustrated me about the current Brawl Stars setup
is when I'm in a game room with my friends, I can't see how many
coins I've already gotten from the event.
I also can't switch events.
So, if I wanted to play Heist after playing Smash & Grab,
I have to disband the game room and redistribute the code.
Tell me you have a fix for this.
Absolutely! Game rooms have been redone.
- They're beautiful now. - Thank you.
It's easy to invite friends, you see the Gold earned in an event,
you can switch the mode without kicking people out and starting over.
- Much easier. - That's beautiful and smoother.
I'm a tournament caster and organizer,
and what's made it difficult to get into Brawl Stars as an eSport
is the lack of friendly battles.
If I can't put team A against B, it's hard to run a tournament.
- Do we have friendly battles? - About friendly battles:
- They're coming! - That's what I'm talking about.
Now, you can do friendly battles in the game rooms.
You can go in, and if you're doing a friendly battle,
you can switch the map, switch everything around.
It's really easy.
Showdown and 3-on-3?
Showdown and 3-on-3 friendly battles.
So you can load up ten people into a Showdown room
in a pre-made group and go at it with each other?
- That's right. - Gosh!
Will I have the option of any map
or just the active maps available at that time?
You can choose any map.
- No kidding! - Oh my gosh!
That's going to be amazing.
For not only just enjoyment, but content, streams, tournaments, events, eSports.
I don't know...
I'm so happy to hear this.
That's literally a game changer for the community,
because you can only do so much when you're playing
matchmaking on the ladder, and now we'll see
an explosion of Smash & Grab leagues, Showdown leagues, mixed maps...
You can have a competitive metagame for the first time.
Yeah. It's all starting now.
This feature may sound a little boring, but I think it's going to be huge.
It's going to be huge.
Not only that, but you can now control the environment you play in.
If you wanted some sort of competition
instead of taking the random map of the day...
I want to work on Snake Prairie or something.
And now you can go and do that.
That's great.
So the current season system is based on your highest individual Brawler.
There's a new leaderboard ranking system in the build.
Can you tell us about that?
Now we're going to have these ranks.
Basically, when you reach milestones on your total Trophies,
not Brawler Trophies, total, you'll be rewarded with Gold.
So, when you hit 200 Trophies, 400, 600, 1,000,
you're going to get Gold rewards on the way.
So, if I have 4,000 Trophies, I should go for more,
because I'll get a boatload of Gold for it?
Depends on how big your boat is,
but you'll get a lot of Gold after the update.
- So that's retroactive? - Yes, it will be retroactive.
And keep in mind that there's a coin cap now at 9,999.
So, if you are sitting at 9,998,
maybe spend some, so that you have room for all these rewards that are coming.
So, if I have 2,000 Trophies, that will be like a few thousand Gold?
I haven't done the calculations yet. We are still tweaking it, but...
PB has to spend his Gold before. I only got a little bit saved up.
I have nothing to spend it on currently. I'm completely maxed.
Good news for when things come and the seasons end.
I'm sure, as we introduce new Brawlers,
I will have some Gold that I need to spend.
Speaking of new Brawlers...
I think you guys saw on reddit the silhouette that I posted.
I am absolutely amazed.
I think you guys have spies in the office, because...
the artwork that I've seen on reddit is so close.
It's a little crude, but dang is it accurate.
It's weirdly accurate. I think someone's been leaking.
- Someone. It could be anyone. - Not I.
The artwork came out before I even told you, guys.
It popped up. So anyway, he will be called Barrelbot.
And yes, he's a robot in a barrel with dual shotguns.
And his Super is out of this world. Do you guys want to talk about it?
His Super is probably my favorite one in the game right now.
It's basically like Bull's Super
with the charge and he runs forever, but it's even longer.
And not only does it charge for a long distance,
it doesn't break through, it ricochets off obstacles.
It's a pinball. He goes "Pinball Barrel", and bounces around.
Every time he runs through an enemy, he does damage.
You can catch people in a narrow corridor
and bounce back and forth a hundred times. Not that, but you get the idea.
And, eventually, you can wear these guys down.
And when you stop running,
you got the double barrel shotguns doing their blast. Awesome.
He's amazing on Heist and Brawl Ball,
because of the ability to roll right into the objective.
He can pinball around the corner to the Heist safe
or he can kick the ball ahead and roll up to it.
Speaking of game modes, Smash & Grab:
he can be the Gem carrier, and you want to get out.
You think Mortis gets out of dodge fast.
Barrelbot can get back to spawn really quickly.
I love his basic attack.
He might be my favorite shotgun character because it's a sequential fire.
He goes: "Pew, pew!" Giving two layers...
How does that go?
But he does it back-to-back, and it's cool,
because I think when people think up new Brawlers in their head,
they don't have that flavor to them. I never thought about:
"He would fire twice, because he has two guns."
You think it's a Piper shot, a single bullet. I love how he works.
He may be my favorite shotgun character and I only played him for an hour.
Thank you guys so much for watching.
Thank you Powerbang. Thank you Rum Ham.
Take a look at their channels. They make awesome content every day.
And we will see you in the update.
