- Today was definitely the best day of practice I've had.
Yesterday I kinda struggled,
but got on something kind of towards the end of the day
that I went and ran with today,
and then had my best day yet.
The weather helped.
I'm mostly fishing little crank baits,
little BX Brats, jerk bait,
and then doing a little bit of flipping,
and then throwing 'em a little skinner bait.
Have like six rods on the deck,
and see what happens.
(intense music)
Grand Lake is behind normal, I would say.
Right now it's more like the last time we
were here for the Classic, I feel like.
The moon is getting more full,
the water temps are rising,
so those fish are moving up,
they're getting ready to spawn,
water's got some good color to it,
so you should see some big weights this week.
I know.

I caught my two biggest fish flippin' today,
and I caught one fish flippin' on practice.
Some guy comes by, like that's all he's doing is flippin',
and he's like, "I can't get bit flippin' today,"
and I literally go,
I just pulled that out, and he goes.
This is my second biggest one.
All right, it's a good thing we caught the last one,
because we needed it, and I don't know,
we're in the middle of the pack starting out.
That's my guess.
Something like that.
45th to 55th.
That's my guess.
This is my first one, like five minutes into the day.

Bassmaster Elite Series champion.
- We had 16 pounds 15 ounces,
which puts us in 37th, which is pretty crazy, right?
Like almost 17 pounds has us in 37th place,
but that's Grand Lake for you in the spring.
This place is awesome.
It's one of my favorite lakes to fish.
I don't know what I'm gonna do yet tomorrow.
It's Autism Awareness Month,
it's April, and we're defending our title.
Maybe I'll auction this thing off.

So I think what we're gonna do is,
so this tournament and Kentucky Lake,
the next one, count for the Austism Angler of April.
What I'm gonna do is when the next one's over,
I'm gonna sign this one,

So we're gonna auction it,
and I'm just gonna take all 100% of the money that's raised
and just give it to an autism charity.
So that's what we're gonna do.
So the plan is to catch 20 pounds,
which is actually really easy to do on Grand Lake,
because there's a ton of four and five pounders here,
but at the same time,
it's not easy because it's never easy to catch 20 pounds.
You make the right decisions, be in the right places,
and be in the right places and the right times,
because these fish are moving,
they're changing, we saw that yesterday,
and so it's all just gonna be about adaptation.
I've been saying that all week.
I've haven't had enough coffee yet for this this morning.

That escalated quickly.
I stopped and I was rolling down, and I was like,
man that sure looking like a bed, and it's empty,
and I look up, and there's this 'nother big,
giant white spot next to this tree,
and I pitched up there,
and I shake it once, and it goes boop.
It starts swimming off.
Well I set the hook,
and the fish got wrapped around
the whole tree that it was spawning next to,
and I was fighting the fish and the tree out
around out here in the middle,
and somehow managed to land the thing.
It was like almost a three pounder.
I didn't have my hat cam on.
Sorry, pal.
You want to know what's even funnier?
Is the cast before that,
I was throwing my crank bait,
and I hooked some piece of trash,
and I said I'm gonna do my part for conservation today,
maybe it'll bring me good luck,
and I put the trash back in my boat
instead of throwing it back in the lake,
and then I looked up, and there was that bed,
and I caught the fish.
Conservation, people.
It pays.
It doesn't feel very big.
He not gonna measure.
He's only 13 and seven eighths.
Ate it off the tree.
That one's barely hooked.

You remember when I caught that five pounder
right off that same tree in the 2014 Classic?
Like off the exact same tree?
If that's not crazy or what.
Not a giant, but he'll keep.

Catch a four pounder,
we should be able to fish again tomorrow.
Oh my gosh.

I just had a friggin' four
or five pounder eat it right there.
Gosh dangit, that was a frickin biggun.
I didn't even jerk it out of her mouth,
she just didn't get it all the way.
(chuckles)

Gosh, that makes me sick.
That was $10,000 at our fingertips.
Gosh, I don't know if I'm gonna run.
It's like critical decisions when you have an hour
and you still need a fish.

That was with four fish.
I don't know if that should be congratulated
or does it make it a little tougher knowing
that you had the quality bites,
just short on the quantity?
- It definitely makes it tougher.
I watched about a four and a half,
five pounder eat it right at the trolling motor,
watched the bait disappear.
I was good, I didn't jerk it out of her mouth,
I just loaded it up, and she just opened her mouth,
and it came right out.
Full of trouble hooks.
I don't know how she did it, she was Houdini.
So it just wasn't my week,
I'm probably going to miss the cut,
but I'm gonna get to know
what all these guys are doing tomorrow,
watching Bassmaster live.
So that'll be good.

I think we're gonna end up about 57th, is my guess.
We're gonna end up 57th,
but maybe there's hope that the weights drop.
If you look at what Basstrack says,
it says the cut weight will be 28 seven,
and we had 30 pounds.
If we do make it,
that means that the weight's dropped from yesterday,
which doesn't happen very often here.
There's a little bit of hope, just a glimmer,
because I had 13 one,
instead of the 12 pounds that I thought I had.
So there's just like a little itty, bitty glimmer of hope.

- Get some work done tomorrow,
clean the boat up.
I think we gotta shoot a photo gallery
for bassmaster.com inside the boat.
So we'll get cleaned up tomorrow,
get that shot, and then probably head to Kentucky,
because we got Kentucky next week.
So good news is, not a total bomb this week,
but hopefully we can make up for it in Kentucky.
Need a good top 12 in Kentucky.

A little disappointed with our finish.
I'm not gonna lie,
Grand Lakes is one of my favorite lakes in the country,
I've had a lot of success there,
and fully expected to do a lot better than I did.
I just made some poor decisions,
didn't think with enough of an open mind.
So we're moving out, and on,
and upward to Kentucky Lake,
and make sure that you guys comment.
