Hello and welcome to Elvenhome and this the May monthly update. For those of you that have seen the last two
videos, on the building of the Vicar' garden, you may wonder whether I've had
time to do anything else but I have, I've had other things that I've been doing. In this update I'll be showing you a project
I'm just about to start, when I can build myself up to actually start doing it. Also a section which I hadn't
originally intended to video for reasons as I'll explain, on the building of a
coaling stage, and at the end you'll see where the coalling stage sits on the
layout. Before I go any further can I thank everybody for their responses to
layout before I go any further can I thank everybody for their responses to
in the churchyard. A range of opinions from yes put more graves in, to no don't
touch it it looks fine. My conclusion I think, I'm really grateful for the
comments it's been very helpful, I've bought from P and D models, not PD models
this time [banner says should be P D Marsh] P and D models some more gravestones which are a slightly
different shape. I won't necessarily use all of them but some of them are the
slab type, which was a particular suggestion which I liked, and also some
slab type which was a particular suggestion which I liked and also some
things will make the difference, and I may put another tree or two in the
churchyard, but I want to see on that because again, it is the thing when it's
church are but I want to see on that because again it is the thing when it's
might might get clobbered. Also welcome to all the new subscribers. When I did
might might get clobbered also welcome to all the new subscribers when I did
had about 658 I think, um 858. Really, really grateful for you subscribing and
had about 658 I think 8 600 858 really really grateful for you subscribing and
there's people out there that enjoy watching the layout grow along with me.
One other thing that I've been doing which I'm not going to go into too much
detail in this introduction, which I used actually ,it's this wonderful little
detail in this introduction which I used actually it's this wonderful little
gizmo which is a gimbal in which you put your iPhone and which keeps it
idea. I used this for the closing sequence
of the last video, and was really quite pleased with some of the results but
of the last video and was really quite pleased with some of the results but
this, it costs about hundred and twenty quid but I'm already
this for those of you it's process about hundred and twenty quid but I'm already
perhaps in that in another update. So let's get on with the with the video.
This is a bit longer than I was aiming for of twenty minutes, I think this is up
this is a bit longer than I was aiming for at twenty minutes I think this is up
some nice, I hope, because I have yet to edit it, shots of trains running, which has
extended it a bit so on with the update and I'll speak to you again in just a moment
Okay, in this section I just want to talk about a project which I'm slowly
building myself up to do and also to talk about a problem that I had
building myself up to do and also to actually talk about a problem that I had
quite a while which is Benjamin's Button it's an A2, the running number
6053. I've decided that inevitably I'm going to need more of one
type of engine if this layout is to look sensible. You can't just have one of a
type of engine but my needs are very specific. They're either in one of
the big four liveries or they're in early BR crest which you can see on
the, if I come in a little more to the, must remember I can't do it that
way, there you go, the early crest that's
way there you go the early crest that's
nettle of changing running numbers on engines. I saw on the Hatton's website
that Benjamin's Button, they're obviously selling them off, sorry Bachelors Button
I always keep calling it Benjamin's Button, Bachelors Button they're
obviously selling them off ,I presume that Farrish are stopping making them.
This one, normally their down to £94this one was down to £90, and I
this one was that normally they're down at 94 this one was down to 90 and I
one of the class of A2s. I've chosen to renumber it as Blue
Peter. Now for the purists among you I know that the outside rodding was rather
different and also that it had a double chimney and not a single chimney. I know this
different and also that it had a double chin in on a single chimney I know this
because I made a gentle inquiry about how you go about doing
make it into Blue Peter required more than just changing the name plates. That
will do for me for now. My skills are not as advanced to actually start
hacking around the body of this engine. So I went to Fox transfers and I bought
firstly a complete set of etched plates for Bachelors Button so that my
existing Bachelors Button wouldn't be out shown by its remumbered sibling, and
existing bachelors button wouldn't be out shown by its remembered sibling and
those I have put on my original engine and I'll just put a short section of
footage in at this point showing the two engines nose to nose and you can see the
engine. I've also got the plates which I can bring up to you now for Blue Peter
there's Blue Peter, and you'll see that the plates also provide a running number
there's blue Peter and you'll see that the plates also provide a running number
running number, showing where where the locomotive was made. I have also bought
and here they are, the transfers to enable me to change the running number I
and here they are the transfers to enable me to change the running number I
think the the advice always is to take the whole running number off if I come
into the locomotive now a bit more to take the whole of the running number off
because it's quite difficult to get transfers which are exactly the same
to attack the side of this cab with a bit of T-cut on a end of a q-tip and
gently take that number off. I then as I understand it need to just
gently take that number off I then as I understand it need to just
put some gloss varnish because the decals prefer to go on to a gloss
surface put the numbers on and then matte varnish over the whole thing and
hopefully it won't look as though I've attacked it with an with a mallet
with a piece of T-cut whether by the end of June for the June update I've
with a piece of tea cut whether by the end of June for the June update I've
have a go at doing that and then I thinkr, um well maybe not I'll read a bit more about
it before I go. Whilst I'm doing this I do want to give a shout out for Bob
Russell @at BR Line. The original engine of this had started to struggle in one
Russell @br lines the original engine of this had started to struggle in in one
particular part of the layout and it's a part of the layout where the castles
which I have also struggle which is particularly anti-clockwise as it comes
round the curve to end to come out of the tunnel and enter Weathertop station
on the right-hand side of the layout but I'd heard that for the a2 somebody had
had a problem with traction and the solution was to buy more wheel sets with
traction tires on if I pick this gently up and show you the bottom there you can
see that these ones here have traction tires rubber tires that are set into a
groove that helps adhesion and you can replace the other wheel sets with more
with traction tires on and BR lines as many of you will know sell spares and so
I went to him said what can you sell me three sets of traction tires because
I've got this problem and that will help with the adhesion and it would've been
very easy for him just to sell me that what I wanted because that's what I've
gone and asked instead he came back with really sound advice which was find the
reason why it's slipping because benjamín bachelors button ought
to be able to take 8 to 10 coaches comfortably and if it's struggling
you've got a problem and you need to solve the problem I actually took the
time to get my spirit level up and take a look about why there was a problem and
lo and behold the problem was very simple the
the baseboards which were all on their own independent feet at that end of the
room the floor is not level and so as the engine was coming round a curve it
was also traveling very slightly uphill and that combination was enough to cause
it to struggle and to slip and so a few wedges under the feet on one end of that
of that the right end has made that level and now not only does this engine
go hurtling round quite happy but the castles have started pulling eight
coaches where they could only pull five and I cannot say more about the quality
of the customer service from Bob Russell to actually say no you don't want me to
sell you these things you need to go and solve the problem is just cracking
customer service and I thought I should mention it so at that point the next
which was the build of a coaling stage so speech again in just a moment [Sound of trains running]
which was the build of a calling stage so speech again in just a moment
around the building of this kit from Mill Lane Sidings I'll put a link in the
underneath this video to their website which is mill-lane-sidings.co.uk
if you're wondering what it actually looks like finished picking up
or UK if you're wondering what it actually looks like finished picking up
that are on the website which I've printed off on three separate
pieces of paper and then tapped them all onto one because it's incredibly useful
pieces of paper and then take them all onto one because it's incredibly useful
as you're doing the build to be able to refer back to this occasionally just to
check that what you're doing is the right thing I've been really impressed
two pointers I thought for those N gauge modelers that might be interested in in
two pointers I thought for those engaged modelers that might be interested in in
doing this kit that I thought it might help to share and then also some people
might just be interested in seeing the the build of the kit now as you can see
if I take just an ordinary plain piece of wood the kit comes in in parts as you
might expect a get to do and the pieces on here have just had their first coat
of the relevant color paint so that the thing for this morning is to give them a
second coat of paint before I start sticking anything together it's very
glue and I think that works probably just as well. Some of the wood has a film
glue and I think that works probably just as well some of the wood has a film
sort of fix things. I found that actually a little dab of glue as well is probably
sort of fix things I found that actually a little dab of glue as well is probably
not a bad thing as I'll show you in a moment a couple of window sills decided
to drop back out again and they're ever so small and carpets have a habit of
taking them into their heart and never letting them go again so that took a
while to get it back but the kit has gone together very well I'm really quite
pleased with how things are going on if I bring you in where I've got - as you
can see I've built the bottom half the carcass of the bottom half
and the way the kit works here let me just show you inside first of all
there's a wooden carcass but the external wall if I bring that in a bit
is done by means of a kind of brick plasticard, this is an offcut which has
is done by means of a kind of brick plastic art this is an offcut which has
a sticky back and essentially there are various sections on here with gaps that
allow the first better so this those are two separate sections that were put on
and stuck in the outside here is all one piece and that leaves gaps for the
brickwork to go in which are also on which come from from this sprue here and
that similarly has got a sticky back one thing I've realized and I've
deliberately chosen this end because it's it's one of the first ends I did I
don't know if you can still see you can just see white showing through and in
the build of this one of the things I realized which I corrected on the other
end and I'll show you the difference is that I would build this by doing all the
brickwork parts and leaving these bits and the port and the window sills and
reason once I put it all together I needed to give the whole thing a
reason once I put it all together I needed to give the whole thing and a
coat of paint for the brickwork to give it an even look which it now has
inevitably being painted on a sheet where all these pieces are separate one
leaves the odd bit of white on edges which show through and two didn't give
that anyway and if you've already by at that point fitted in all the the blue
that anyway and if you've already buy at that point fitted in all the the blue
the others but and in fact you can see it on no you
the others but and in fact you can see it on known you
can't see on here what I also was able to do because these parts hadn't had
been fitted at that point was to go through actually now this is a good one
to show you was to go through and in the gaps where the blue bricks hadn't yet
on the carcass and you can see actually with that arch which hasn't yet got
on the carcass and you can see actually with that arch which hasn't yet caught
anything in that's now painted the brick color so you don't get that slight white
look I think I'll get rid of that because this is all gonna have to be
weathered down with coal and dust and stuff we might get rid of that with with
some weathering powders I suspect the other thing is internally that at the
back there is where the where the coal wagons go in so it's got to be painted
black otherwise it would look rather odd but I think also inside here needs or at
least the back wall and the side walls need to be painted black which I'll be
doing shortly because otherwise when you look through the windows that'll be here
all you'll see inside is a white carcass and I can't believe it you know that's
all gonna be pretty dark because in the original this bit here is where the cold
wagons come in at the back the coal is then shoveled forward into trolleys
which are pushed up to the end and pushed over into the engines and you'll
see that as I complete the the work because I've got some very sweet little
coal is moved from big coal wagons and shoveled out into smaller coal wagons
waiting tender below so the things for this morning is to get on and do the
guns which are then tipped up to the end of pitched into the pitched into the
waiting tender below so the things for the Smalling is to get on and do the
second coat of the painting to give that a painting of black inside and then it
first then presumably I fit the doors and all the rest of it but
I haven't read the instructions that far yet so I'll come back when I've completed
first then presumably I fit the doors and all the rest
I've read the instructions that fell yet so I'll come back when I've completed
the next stage and you'll see where we've got to
[Music]
here we are one day on from the last section
and as you can see I've made up the water tank just bring that back a bit
close to the camera it's just had its very first coat of paint on the
aluminium foil which is obviously corrugated I probably should have primed
that first but never mind that coat of paint can be the primer and it will
obviously get more coats of paint until I get a good effect on the on the roof
this went together very easily actually surprisingly easily if I turn it up you
can get an idea of how it fits together there are cross pieces that go in here
and smaller sections that slot in in between to brace everything together and
then there's a piece of wood which fits across the top and you can
just about to see if I bring them here little pins or teeth which this piece of
wood sits on I thought I was going to have the devil's own job because there
must be what is that five by about 25 teeth that had to be aligned up but it
all clicked in beautifully and these sections obviously fit over the top and
there is our water tank and all I've got to do now is finish painting it and the
other there's two little pipes that that go on the top which are air vents and
that is in the process excuse me a moment
this got painted this is a piece of white piping that they give you to cut
your two air vents off and probably also to provide a post for Assigned which I
may or may not use so that's being that's painted up and and done the
things you can see in front of you are two white metal stairs set flights of
stairs which are cut to create the stairs up the side of the coaling
stage and you'll see those in a minute and here if I just gently pick it up because it is
drying just to bring it in you're going to focus there you are
there is one of the little trolleys that I was talking to you about oops
come into focus there you go which are rather sweet little things so
they're waiting to be done and then finally this has just been painted which
is the rail for the trolleys to sit on and there I've just painted the sleepers
and left the rail clear and that though I think will do is fine the next thing
well the next thing strictly is to make the stairs but those things need to dry
and the next thing will be to put to finish this building off which is what
I'm going to move on to to put all the windows in and then to put a roof on
which sits on top of here between this and that when these two go together
you'll see there's a gap there again now strictly speaking I'm supposed to put
things underneath here which fill that gap so that when this sits on the things
go around the outside and everybody's happy
but I'm weary of doing that because I'm not sure the pieces that I've got will
necessarily fill the gap but I don't want that white showing through so what
I'm going to do is stick everything on and put those ribbons on that go in
there as the final thing and then I think everything I can I can cut things
to what's needed or paint these in I may still do that actually just paint these
in brick and then stick the things over the top of it but I think we're not very
far from finishing here we've got the stairs to do which go here and one set
of stairs come off here down and another up so that people can walk into the top
of the coaling stage and then which will be more fun and that's drying over here
this has got primer on it because this brass did not like enamel paint without
primer so that's just been primed waiting for its first coat of black and
that folds up into an extended ladder that leads up to the water tank which
would be about the last thing that will need to be done so what I propose to do
now is get on into all the all the rest of that and then come back once I've got
this pretty much finished apart from the etched brass ladder and stage up to the
water tank so I'll see you once I've done all of that.
Well here we are
day or so on from the last bit that you saw and indeed I have finished I'm really
pleased with this model I'm really pleased with the kit it's gone together
well the stairs here cause me to quail a little when I started to put them
together because they are made up of somewhere in the region about 30
separate pieces you think I'm never going to get these
to go together but it's an excellent kit it really is an excellent kit and you
just do what it tells you to do which is an odd thing that really so this is now
the coaling stage finished if i zoom in a little bit and then just readjust
excuse me there you go I think you can now see in the center the two little
coal wagons waiting for a train to come up so they can be tipped in or a
locomotive rather to come up so they can be tipped in and of course what will
happen zooming you back out again is that I need to build an incline up here
that's just about an inch very roughly for the coal wagons to be
taken up into the tunnel of the locomotives did not enter this building
so it was only ever coal wagons that are pushed up into the building and then a
line will come underneath here so that the tender
would line up with with the bottom of this and that is what is intended on the
layout and I'll go onto the layout in a moment put this in position to explain
how I'm how I'm going to organize things the etched brass did come out as you can
see it's a ladder and make me mind up whether I actually put that on once I
come to have it permanently on the layout it is very very fine and I can see
if it sits on the layout a while particularly I'm going to be doing
scenic work it's gonna get biffed so I think that may well get stuck on right
at right at the last moment but otherwise I I'm very pleased with this
kit and I think for those of you who are N gauge modelers who fancy a bit of GWR
infrastructure on your layout you couldn't go far wrong with this kit it
goes together very well good instructions on the whole one or two
places where I had to scratch my head for a bit but good instructions so let's
get this on the layout so you can see where it's going to be and that will
bring this bit of the monthly update to an end well here we are with the Coal
Stage on the layout and you can see something which I'd forgotten you may
recall I think in the I think it was in the last monthly update I was saying I
wasn't entirely sure what was going to go down in this area and I'd entirely
forgotten that I was going to build this coaling stage because that is why the
line that you can see traveling up into it comes off a point with the castle
just behind which is a head shunt to allow a small tank wagon, a tank engine
with a couple of wagons to go into the head shunt and then pushed up the
incline into the coaling stage engines did not enter the coaling stage for
obvious reasons big Smoky engines going in there would probably set light to it
so a line will come off if I come around slightly to the front a line will come
off of the turntable here and it will come off and curve around
under the bit where the two little trucks are it doesn't need to be really
long because obviously the engines go onto the turntable are either turned or
go straight on to be coaled and then back and turned either to go into the sheds
or to go and enter duty so that's pretty much it for the coaling stage there will
also be some engine sheds here eventually once I've replaced the
turntable because I think as I've mentioned before I've bodged it a bit to
get it to work it doesn't work very well and I'm holding off on Peco bringing
out a motorised version although I may just have to bite the bullet and get
somebody else's but we'll wait and see so that's the end of this monthly update
thank you very much for watching if you've if this is your first time
