hello guys, my name is Karan
and we have got back the Marathi Podcast for you people.
I know it's been too long but
we were looking for the guest and finally we have found him.
Today's guest NEEDS introduction. It is not like he doesn't need it.
Please welcome, Sarang Sathaye
Everybody let's clap!
Our topic for today is Growing up as a 90's kid
Right.
I think that you were born between 80's and 90's
I was born in 80's but..
the best time I had...
Karan: It is exactly of that time.
Sarang: It is of 90's
Hardcore. My whatsapp status also says...
Who is MUKUT BIHARI amongst you?
You people won't get it.
No..No..
This is HARDCORE 90's reference.
I didn't get the joke.
Yes.
Only actual 90's kid will get it.
The movie TEZAAB
it was launched around late 80's....late 90's..
I think HARDCORE cinemas started after TEZAAB
and in that...
Anil Kapoor in that movie..he was an icon at that time...
Standing above train and....
so in the start...
He is shown drunk...dancing drunk..in navratri...
and then...
The goons follow him..about to beat him..
and he is walking on the railway tracks...
and he suddenly turns and says ' Who is MUKAT BIHARI amongst you?'
he says that...
and basically he is not drunk
He is just pretending drunk
Ok.
So that is the famous dialouge, we heard in out childhood.
memories
Who is the king of MUMBAI? type of..
Now he is coming in our 90's
I have experienced 90's from start to finish.
and we started from between.
but if you see...
Which is the most memorable thing you miss from 90's?
One such thing is this (pointing at the cassettes)
I miss it badly
Inserting the pencil and rolling the tape
and my father had this habit of...
recording movies.
Ok.
it was connected to the Tv...
Karan: VCR?
No..No..From the TV.
DD national
because he was an engineer..
he had loads of skills.
At my place, whenever a new electronic thing is bought,
he use to open it...
When we had got our new computer also,he had opened it.
to see what's inside.
Curious?
So he connected, don't know, what all things to the TV...
The aux thing was not present at that time..
but he did some DIY.
and the tape use to record all the audio..
means whatever is going on in the TV
then it will get recorded in that system
and we use to listen it later. To enjoy!
We have no idea about this system.
Neel:This is something big.
I only know that in those times, VCR was a thing.
We experience that.
We use to hire VCR
Yes. Everybody use to do that.
Everyone use to hire it.
We use to watch 3 cinemas in a day
Finish them. Quickly.
Dedicating one day to it.
So you were in your mid 90's
Right.
So you did your schooling from 90's...
Yes.
You are from Pune?
yes. I am from Pune.
I always do a joke in my stand up set
that...
I was born in 80's
but i should get an award because the first 8 years i was living in SADASHIVPETH
because Sadashiv Peth is still in 90's..not 90's...it is still in its 60's
so there i was..
My 90's had gone in PETHET
Pune's Sadashivpeth, ShukravarPeth..like those..
Hardcore Marathi location.
So now you see me was not the same that time.
i was completely different back then...
Simple and honest?
i was not simple and honest..
ofcourse...
I was naughty at that time
but...
I was a bit..shy..
scared..
stupid...completely stupid...
I use to earn 40% in studies...
When i had gone to 10th standard...i had given my 10th in 1998..
Neel: I gave my 10th exactly after 10 years.
but...
Golden period..that is the reason i am saying...
from 1st to 12th standard..that time..
I have spent it in 90's
so that was my Golden period...
GOLDEN PERIOD!
Right.
I just got reminded because of naughtiness
When telephone was introduced in 90's
we use to do a lot of naughty things on the phone.
i remember...
when we had telephone...
and my parents use to go to work..
we use to come from school and my brother and me had one work only..
Switch on the TV.
Whatever numbers we use to see on the TV...
dial on each and everyone of them.
Hello !
We had YELLOW PAGES back then!
The huge book!
from that..this one..that one..
We use to call unknown people and ask...
Hello, you have water in your tap?
yes. it is there.
Then open the tap.
In our school, the worst thing we use to do is...
call each other's house and tease them by their fathers name
One such girl in our school, she was our good friend...
her fathers name was Narayan.
so people use to call her and say.....
when she use to pick the call..we use to say..
NARAYAN..NARAYAN!
and that..
no one can identify who use to do that..
Neel: Right
And i guess that time, tutions had started.
Tutions had just started then!
I mean, in your time, did you had private tutions?
In my times, Yes. They were there!
Previously, I use to say NO to go to tutions
You use to say it or parents?
They had put me once..
for the Hindi exams
and one day...
i never use to go actually to the tutions.
I use stroll in the area
Roam around in the area for a hour and show as if i came from the class.
one day...i am stupid man..i was an idiot ofcourse...
so..i roamed around and went to my uncle's restaurant..
My uncle had a small shop..selling
Bhel, Dosa and small food items
so i went there and went with the waiters of the restaurant to play cricket...
and then my uncle came there and he said..
What did you say to your parents, were are you going?
So i use to say NO to tutions previously, take holidays, use to bunk..
i finally..
joined tutions in 7th standard for a year
because...
one teacher got to know that..
this boy has learning disabilities. he can't understand things, how to write things.
But was it real or you were acting?
yes..yes..the thing in shown in TAARE ZAMEEN Par..
Karan: Ok. like that!
Sarang: Then i got to knw...
Neel: there is A THING like this.
Now, whenever i write the episode of casting couch...
with the title EPISODE 1...
Yes.
I don't know the spelling of EPISODE.
Neel: I also have this problem.
I have problems in small words as well.
Karan: you write one word in a page, if it is there, with different spellings?
Different. yes.
till date?
yes.
but now...
the one best..
the best thing i love in the year 2000 was computers.
yes. right.
it is really god's gift.
Back then, when someone use to own a computer,
he was the King.
Aniket: King
Karan: In those times,I guess, we use to have 256 MB RAM in our computers.
Sarang: My first computer...
had 386 and the other was 486.
I mean it had those RAMS.
and then it had 40GB of hard disk.
Hard disk...and then...floppy!
I still have old floppies..and in those floppies..
we could store 4 photos.
Neel: too costly!
Only 4 photos in a single floppy.
it was better to take printout rather than storing it in floppy.
Those who had computer, it was a big thing, but those who had internet,it was a really a big thing...
Cyber cafe was a thing that time.
The important thing was having internet and having a working internet connection
Right.
Karan: Dial-up connection..we had Dial-up connection.
it was never working because phone lines use to be dead..
load shedding..
and now in Bandra,
Day before yesterday..I am living in Bandra for the past 4 years..
In the past 4 years, only once we had no electricity.
for how long?
for a hour or so..some maintenance work..
Over here, Electricity goes for a bit long time...
Had just gone before starting this podcast...
no..only for a hour..but..
we are not use to it right?
we use to hide candles in every corner of the house in 90's
yes..we use to have that habit..right..
It was compulsory in 90's
and when electricity use to come, blow them off.
and also shout...
in our complex..everyone use to shout!
One more thing from 90's was that..
entering the tunnel in train..
YES
Train or while going to the picnic in bus,
we use to shout from the core, enthusiasm level high..entering the tunnel..
Day before yesterday, i was teaching my nephew..we were going for a wedding..
i told her we use to shout and all..
she coudn't understand at all..why to shout?
neel: Why?
Why? This question arises.
That is the reason, today's kids and 90's kid are nowhere close.
Both are poles apart from each other.
Now in Mumbai also we can see,
Summer vacations are currently going on...
Yes.
No one is playing outdoor games...
No..No...
Kids play cricket...
But hide and seek,
No...Lagori, Hide and seek, Dabba eyes spice,
Everything is gone...
Neel: Aba Dhubi..
Aniket: i remember in those times, when we use to go out to play...
everyone's face
today, no one is getting dark..our parents use to tell us, go and out play...
karan: GO!
Aniket: Enjoy your holidays..go and play!
Karan: now they take too much care of their children.
Aniket: now they take too much care of their children.
Neel: in those times, holidays were like...
Get up in the morning...
Eat...
and then go down to play.
Come up in the afternoon..
eat lunch...
If we have computers, then play games or video games, the console one..some one use to have that..
when that is done..in the evening...
go down again to play and come back home late in the night.
This used to be a set routine.
The most important thing was...
our parents never use to worry about us much.
We have neighbours in our locality..
if there child used to come in our house, they use to take it back quickly.
Ok.
In those times, my parents never knew at whose place i have gone to,
check his place, check in that area..
So that was good thing in 90's, you could anywhere you want...
We use to stay in Mumbai so we use to stay in buildings...
so we had this habit..that our moms use to scream out our name from the top floor..
and she use to scream so loudly...
KARANNNNNNNNNN
Everyone could hear it! The whole buidling.
I shifted in building in '96..no...'94
shifted in building...
and in '96...
we went in a highrise...highrise means...
4 floor.
Neel: OMG!
So we had balcony in our house..i mean terrace connected to our apartment..
my friends use to..
they use to drive their cycles below..just pass..
and while going...HEY SARANG! HEY SARANG!
karan: they had that habit.
and till the time we are not use to that habit..
that they are doing timepass..
I use to come out and they use to vanish and because of that..
my mom use to come out 20-25 times in a day because friends use to yell my name.
Video games also in those times was...
Aniket: it was politics.
In our building, politics was played because of video games.
He is with you, don't take him
he doesn't play good. Don't take him.
Karan: I will come at your place, but don't call him. We will play both.
This used to run systematic.
Trump cards too!
Neel: WWE
Karan: WWF!
Now it is transformed into WWE
Sarang: Tatanka
Aniket: Hulk Hogan..
Neel:no playing cards, lets play WWF cards.
I have TRIPLE H, Undertaker and we had it byheart..
Neel: His height, weight...
Sarang: We use to know byheart.
Neel: lbs..we don't know what was lbs..but height, weight..
It should be more.
Karan: Their entry music...Steve Austin..
He use to come..smashing glass sound effect...
Bulbs use to break!
i played cards..day before yesterday..after a long time..very long time...
that too in canada
but i have not lost that habit at all..
so i played like for hours...till early morning..
Neel: Used to play with strategy,..card games with strategy...
Sarang: but it has become very less now.
And we use to play a game..you know..
Cricket in the books...
yes, from the books.
Flip the pages in the book..
It was a very enjoyable!
and we use to write players name as well,
Sarang: yes
Karan: Below the runs scored by the batsmen,
and for the toss, tear a small bit of paper and make a dot on it and throw it in air.
Neel: I remember, i use to play it in lectures.
Karan: yes
Neel: Lecture and all is boring, i use to play it in schools only.
Sarang: We use to carry things to school like snacks..
and...
Raw Mango
and Cucumber...
There used to be female vendor outside school for cucumber
Outside the school gate..we use to poke our hands out from the gap of the gate...
There was a star shape snack which they use to give...what is it called?
Ber?
It was star shape..they use to cut it and eat it..
Sarang: The female vendor outside school,
as we were not getting money daily...
i use to 10rs. in every 2 weeks.
It use to cover my expenses
Do you use to get pocket money?
No..No..No...
Sold Old unwanted things...
ok..from that..
Collected milk packets...
Karan: Ok..so you use to earn from that...
Sarang: Keep the scrap money with you.
i use to get it like that.
Neel: Its ok..keep it now..its yours..
Sarang: Nothing apart from that.
but...
sometimes they use to give...
yearly interest use to come..so i use to get it..
From a scheme
but...
So i could not afford the cucumber on a daily basis.
so what we use to do..we had a deal with the vendor..
the skin which she use to peel..she use to give us that mixing it in salt.
Neel: Eat the skin?
Sarang: yes.
In the end, we just need the...feel...of eating the cucumber.
Guys, you can imagine as well
that the founder of BHADIPA...
was eating skin of the cucumber in those times,.
Sarang: They use to mix salt as well in it.
karan: I know Salt, but i never did this.
Neel: If you have your biopic in the future, you can start the scene with this scene, EATING SKIN OF THE CUCUMBER
The best thing was in March because in that month,
Raw mango use to grow on trees and Raw mangoes skin is tasty to eat.
Neel: It is a eatable thing.
I am lucky that we still have trees of mangoes in our house..
or else..
It is gone from 90's..i mean there are no trees nowadays..
so the thing of..
plucking raw mangoes from trees was A THING as well in those times.
Previously...with chappals,
yes...
we use to carry that stick with the hook, chappals,
make something in DIY...hang your tshirt in it..
Sarang: Fit the hook in it..
Neel: i remember, my vest was tore and hooked to a bamboo and they were using it..
and they use to close it down so that the fruit falls in the cloth only.
Karan: I still remember...when i was small..Kaho na pyaar hai had released...
YES
2000?
Yes around 2000...
and that time for me Hrithik Roshan was like...
Sarang: Nothing!
Boring..his new...
Saw him in theatre..and he was like SUPERB!
I mean..the tight tshirt and the dance...
I use to wear that COOL locket..SRK use to wear in Kuch Kuch hota hai..
I use to wear it and roam..
I also had that COOL locket..then the NIKE lockets he use to wear...
He use to wear that POLO SPORT written tshirt..
It was KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI ?
YES. RIGHT. The same one.
He use to wear the side bag..the pouch..
