Life As A Transgender Soldier In The U.S. Military (HBO) - Duration: 6:04.

The July tweetstorm from President Trump announcing a ban on transgender people in the military—

which would reverse the historic 2016 decision to allow them to serve openly—

has wreaked havoc across the armed services.

The military establishment wasn't consulted

and the Department of Defense had no policy response.

And for thousands of trans troops,

the lives they've dedicated to serving their country

now hang in the balance.

— I found out about maybe 15 minutes before morning formation.

I was already at work.

— This is Katie Schmid and her wife, Lulu.

— And Wednesdays are run days, so I went running.

— If I recall, you told me you were running out of spite, purely on spite.

And then, Katie got home and…

there was shouting, and crying, and wall punching.

— I didn't punch any walls.

— I didn't so you did.

It was very emotional.

— Schmid enlisted in the Army in 2005 in intelligence,

and as a man.

— The whole idea of

like, swearing to support and defend the Constitution and stuff like that

really resonated with me.

And I know it's pretty stereotypical, I guess, but…

I thought the Army would make a man out of me.

— After completing specialty training,

she was stationed in Germany,

then moved to Fort Riley, Kansas.

She was made a noncommissioned officer in 2009,

and staff sergeant in 2012.

— Once I became an NCO, I started getting these.

These are NCO ERs—

or non-commissioned officer evaluation reports.

And of course, it's got my old name on it.

I started getting started getting comments from my raters saying things like,

"Committed to the goals and mission of the unit above personal welfare,"

"dedicated and absolutely loyal,"

"unlimited potential."

— Are you proud?

— Absolutely.

But I'm not just proud of myself.

I'm not doing it for myself.

I'm not doing it for getting a piece of paper that says, "You done good."

I'm doing it because…

because I love being in the Army.

This is my life, and it has been for over a decade.

— When she came home from Iraq in 2013,

Katie knew she was trans.

She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria,

which could have gotten her kicked out.

To preempt that, she wrote a memo to her superiors.

— I offered them a deal.

I said, "I promise you that I will not take any steps towards my transition"

"unless and until specifically authorized by the DOD.

The mission comes first.

And my medical care can take a backseat.

Just don't kick me out of the army.

— Do you think if you didn't have a record like this,

it would have been harder for you to transition in the Army?

— Absolutely.

That was the single deciding factor of not being kicked out back in 2014.

It felt like…

it had finally been proven true what the Army always said,

which was, "You're not going to be judged for who you are,"

"only how you perform."

— In June 2016, after a lengthy review,

the Department of Defense announced

that trans service members would be allowed to serve openly:

— Effective immediately,

transgender Americans may service openly,

and they can no longer be discharged or otherwise separated from the military

just for being transgender.

— I had been waiting not just since I'd come out, but…

it felt the same way as when I got told by my commander back in 2014

that you can stay in based on your merit.

Your gender takes a backseat.

— But Trump's tweet has thrown all of Schmid's accomplishments into question.

While we were in Tacoma,

she planned a meet-up with other trans service members in the area

to talk about their experiences after the tweet,

and what comes next.

— My squad leader texts me and he's like, "You know, this was put out,"

and I was like, "Okay."

We're not going to freak out,

because it's not what we do.

We're soldiers—

we're members of the military,

we suck it up and drive on until something happens.

— My whole military career and future somewhat flashed before my eyes,

because the military has been my life since I was a little kid.

When you have your whole…

next 13 to 23 years planned out one specific way,

and somebody brings up something that could potentially ruin that,

it's nerve wracking and a little heartbreaking.

— There's no policy yet.

— What if there was?

What do you think you would do?

— There are so many what-if's with that question though, you know?

It depends on, what does that policy say?

What does it entail?

Does it entail a grandfather clause for those of us who are already here?

Even if it did include that,

we're still going to sit here for our brothers and sisters that come behind us,

who still want to serve their country,

because they're able-bodied and should be able to serve their country,

you know, it's going to affect them.

The fight doesn't stop with us.

— We all know exactly what we need to do,

and it's not just say,

"Okay, here's what I feel inside versus here's what I express outwardly."

A soldier isn't something you do,

a soldier is someone you are.

- Basically, an ultrasound saved my son's life.

We had just gotten the happy news.

I was pregnant and we were ecstatic.

And then within a week we got the sad news

that I had miscarried.

We were lucky.

We had a young resident,

and he was just curious.

He said, "I just, can we do a couple tests?"

I remember that moment as though it were yesterday

when we are looking at the ultrasound

and they showed us a heartbeat.

Not every doctor wanted to do that journey

of trying to save a baby that actually was a miscarriage,

and it began the bedrest.

So they gave me a lot of medication

and a lot of side effects.

Moments come back when it was the fear that I felt

every single day alone in bed

with no one being able to keep track

of what was happening with me and the baby.

If I had been through this experience today,

it would be a whole new experience.

Being able to just know,

oh, no, he's still there, he's moving,

or that my doctor would know,

oh no, something's not going well.

So technology became part of my life,

and realizing that it can be

a very personal part of everyone's life.

And I've been at company after company

trying to build that ultimate healthcare platform

and it hadn't worked.

So I woke up one day and I said, I'm done.

This can't be done.

And then I got a phone call from a colleague,

and he said, "We're starting this new

"product management team at Philips."

To actually do the work that had been my dream

for over a decade.

Within my first year at Philips,

we launched the first clinical version

of the health platform.

So along the way, my son has inspired me.

In the same way that he went from being

a speck on an ultrasound to a real person,

my dream to be able to connect people with providers,

it's real now.

1999-2004 Mustang GT BBK High Flow Aluminum Fuel Rail Kit Review - Duration: 4:06.

The BBK High Flow Aluminum Fuel Rail Kit is available for the '99 to '04 Mustang GT owners

who are looking to push the horsepower limit of their 4.6-Liter motor and need a more capable

fuel rail system in order to handle the proper amount of fuel needed for their setup.

This particular kit is finished in blue and includes everything you need at a more affordable

price than most options on the site.

The installation for fuel rails and lines aren't exactly a walk in the park, as they

do require you to remove the manifold and have a little mechanical knowledge, so I'm

giving this one full three out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter, which I'll talk more

about later on.

First and foremost, why would you need to upgrade your fuel lines and rails to a high-flow

kit like this?

Well, plain and simple, you might need more fuel delivered to your cylinders to keep up

with the power you wanna put to the tires.

Fuel rails and lines are a part of that system.

There are three main components to the delivery system, which consist of fuel pump, fuel lines

and rails like here, and the fuel injectors.

The stock setup can only handle so much, so when you're pushing your motor to and past

the limit, you need to start replacing those parts with aftermarket ones that you know

can get the job done.

Now, the reason I said you might need more fuel delivered is because it really depends

on your particular setup.

The factory fuel rails can tend to limit the amount of fuel being delivered because it

can only handle so much.

You're pushing more power than it can handle, which is typically right around the 500 wheel

horsepower mark.

They can tend to act as a bottleneck and even bend, in some cases, and break.

The stock pump and injectors are known to handle more than the rails, so this might

be the first stop in upgrading the fuel delivery system.

With the high-flow system I've got here, you're able to open up the passageway when your motor

is chugging the fuel going in in order to output its maximum potential.

Since these are CNC-machined out of a lightweight billet aluminum, they're able to handle maximization

far better than the stock wimpy rails ever could.

The blue anodized finish helps with longevity, but it also looks pretty good peeking out

under the manifold as well, which is always a plus.

BBK typically makes some pretty budget-friendly parts, and this one is absolutely no different.

For just above the $200 mark, this kit comes with the two rails you see here as well as

the proper hose fitments and all the hardware needed for the installation.

It's not a bad idea to pick up a set of braided stainless steel fuel lines as well to help

complete the flow to your cylinders with some more reliable parts.

Keep in mind this is going to need a tune since you're altering the amount of fuel being

delivered, and you can work with your tuner to determine whether or not you wanna pick

up some upgraded injectors and/or a new fuel pump to help with the delivery system completion.

It really all depends on your particular setup.

I know I've said that a bunch of times, but it's very important.

The amount of fuel pressure, the boost levels, and if you're going with forced induction

is all up between you and your tuner.

There's a lot of variables that can come into play, so you wanna take that into account.

The installation is definitely gonna require some mechanical expertise, as I mentioned

in the beginning.

As far as tools, you'll need a spring lock type fuel line disconnecting tool, which,

if you don't have, you can get at your local auto parts store.

Most of them will rent it out for you, so you don't have to worry about buying it for

a one-time use.

Also, having an 11/16ths-inch wrench, a 12-millimeter, 10-millimeter, and 8-millimeter socket and

a ratchet, 5-millimeter and 5/32nds Allen wrench, white lithium grease, Teflon tape,

and anti-seize locking grease as well.

Obviously, very specific tools here, so you wanna make sure you have the right ones on

deck before you get started.

If you don't have the expertise or a helping hand to get this one installed, there's no

shame handing it over to a professional to get done properly.

Definitely give this one full three out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter.

It'll take a couple of hours from start to finish.

There have been some reports and controversy over the fitment issues with different sets

of coil-on plugs and different aftermarket manifolds.

The truth is this is made to work with most aftermarket manifolds and almost all plugs,

include MSD.

You'll definitely wanna make sure you're using the correct tools I mentioned a second ago,

but other than that, there is some good, old-fashioned elbow grease involved to do the trick.

There are instructions provided in the kit to help you along your way, of course, and

our customer service team is always willing to give you a hand.

That just about wraps this one up.

DIY Anthropologie Wall Hanging - KayleyMelissa - Duration: 4:56.

- Hey guys, Kayley here.

I'm back with another DIY because you guys have been

asking for them so I decided today, I'm gonna go

the home decor route.

Montage.

(upbeat music)

I took inspiration from Anthropologie because

I found these wall hangings there that were

$100 and $200 dollars each.

I mean, what?

So I decided to remake those for under $20 each.

And, bonus, it took me less than an episode of Friends for

each of these to create these less than $200 masterpieces.

I hope you guys enjoy, let's get into it.

I'm gonna start with the basic.

For your base you will need a 12 inch ring,

which you can find on Amazon.

Yarn in the color and texture of your choice,

and scissors.

For step one, start by folding a piece of yarn next to

your ring and decide how long you want your strands to be.

Cut that piece and use it as a guide to cut about

25 pieces in total.

I don't really worry about being super precise

with the lengths, because I like the ends to have

kind of a natural tapered look to them.

Now you're gonna fold your yarn in half and you're

ready to tie it to the ring.

You're gonna create a knot by wrapping the fold of the yarn

over the ring, and tucking the ends through the loop.

Continue adding the loops until all of your yarn

is on the ring.

I think it helps to prop up one side of the ring

so you don't have to keep picking it up

every time you tie a new piece,

so I used a little bit of the yarn to hold it up.

Once you've tied all the yarn, take a look at the ends

and make sure everything looks good.

Sometimes there are a couple of stray long hairs

that I have to cut so that everything works.

And that's it.

You can always play with different lengths or colors,

even add a braid in.

It's all up to you and your imagination.

And I think even the least crafty among you

can pull this one off.

Now onto the arcs.

For this you're going to start with the steps

from our first wall hanging.

I kept the yarn on this one a little on the short side

and I used about 30 pieces of yarn.

Then you'll need an 8 inch ring, and optionally

some ribbon or leather cord and wooden beads.

We're gonna start by adding the second ring.

You're gonna grab about 14 inches more of yarn

or you can choose to add in a new texture

and I'm using some leather cord.

Start by tying a half knot, leaving a tiny tail

and align the tail with the rings.

Then wrap all of that together.

At the end of the wrap, tie another half knot

on the back of the rings as tight as you can.

And cut off the tail.

If you want, you can add a little glue for extra security.

Now this is super optional but if you want,

grab some string and tie it to the top of the ring

just like we did with the yarn.

Then shimmy it a little, so it hides in the cracks

of the wrap we just did.

Then add a few beads onto it, and knot the string

a few inches up from that.

Cut off the extra ends, and you're done.

I really like how stylish and expensive this looks.

It looks like ones that I've seen for $100

but this one cost me less than $15 to make.

And now we're onto our fringed wall hanging.

For this one, you will need a 14 inch ring,

a 2 1/2 inch dowel which you can pick up

at any craft store.

Two colors of yarn, scissors, and glue.

First you're gonna place the dowel

where you would like your first layer of fringe to sit.

Then cut it to size.

I'm not fancy so I just used my kitchen scissors.

Optionally you can paint or stain the dowels in any color

you like, but I decided to leave them natural.

Now you're gonna cut your yarn.

For the top I'm using this cream color and for the bottom

I'm using a darker, cozy gray.

For the top I measured each piece about 24 inches long

and I used 22 pieces.

And for the bottom I made them slightly longer

at 28 inches long and I did 30 pieces.

Now all that's left is to knot the yarn.

Knot the shorter yarn onto your top dowel using

the same loop and pull method that I showed you earlier.

Then repeat the same thing with the longer yarn

on the second dowel.

And to finish everything off, grab a bit of glue

and glue down the bottom dowel first.

Hot glue is always the easiest way to go,

but you could also use E6000 for some really strong hold.

And then glue down your second dowel a little farther up,

and you're done.

I love the split level on this one.

You can mix up any color combo to fit your style.

It looks amazing and it comes together pretty quickly.

There you go.

Three inexpensive ways to make some beautiful wall art.

I feel like if you like braiding hair,

tying knots isn't far behind that.

Tricks of the magician trade - Duration: 3:15.

I think if you want to get into magic, I think for the first two to three years you have

to do your own research.

Because unlike other art forms, there is this thing that you're entering a world of secrets.

So people are very secretive about what they want to teach you because you might learn

things for a year, then get bored of it and start learning other things.

The first two to three years, go online, Google, YouTube, look up things...

You'll find a lot of things, you'll find a plethora of content which you can get to learn

the basics.

Watch other magicians, once you know the basics, try to replicate what they are doing.

And once you've reached a stage in about two, two and a half years of doing magic or

learning magic, not performing, get in touch with me.

Get in touch with any other magician who you look up to and I'm pretty sure they'll be

willing to help you.

In fact, I've started doing open mics around the country.

Which are just for magic and mentalism.

So if you're into magic, for two or two and a half years, get in touch with me, I'll teach

you a few things which you can do on stage, I'll give you a stage to perform.

That's something that I think is... the initial steps are something that you have to take

on your own.

Everybody makes mistakes, uh, there was, I was learning forms of magic which I haven't

done since I learned them, the cutting people in half, the taking a rabbit out of a hat,

making things disappear... that's never excited me, but I learned that... but I don't regret

it in any way because it's something that I learned. I learned that it's not where I

belong.

I learned that my kind of magic has to be away from all of that, I learned that the

sleight of hand is also not something that I'm supposed to be doing.

The sleight of mind is something that I'm more fascinated by.

So the mistakes weren't really mistakes, so to say, they were experiences that I gained

because of that.

I think it's very important that you make those mistakes to gain an experience so that

you know what your holding is and what your place is in the world of magic.

There are a few moves, without giving away too much, but there's a trick that David Blaine

made really famous, about 20 years ago, where somebody picks the card, and it keeps jumping

up to the top of the deck.

Even if it goes in the middle, it keeps jumping to the top of the deck, like with the snap

of a finger.

And he does that about 10 times in two minutes.

That's something that you need to master in the two years that you're doing magic on your

own.

Where you have no mentor, where you have no one to look up to, where you're just online,

those two years, you have to master this...

That's one of them, the other one is one of the simplest ways to make a coin disappear.

Now you might not do these two tricks ever on stage, I have never ever done those, but

you learn moves which are going to be involved in pretty much every trick that you do.

Without actually doing that particular trick.

So the basics get solidified just by learning those two tricks.

The third one is, not exactly related to magic, it's more about observing things.

Because the kind of magic I do - figuring out someone's password, figuring out the name

of their first crush, things like that, you have to look at people more than anything

else.

You have to figure out what they like, what they enjoy, what their expressions are, and

communicating their expressions - basically putting a word to their expression so that

the audience knows what you're doing as well, so the audience can relate to what's happening.

So those three things you really need to pick up on in the first two, two and a half years

of just doing things on your own.

Hello, and welcome to another Shadowverse video sponsored by Cygames.

You might know that I am recording my videos in general in English,

but Shadowverse is finally available in German

so I thought it might be a cool idea to show you the game and the game basics today in my mother tongue.

Shadowverse is a free to play Anime collectible card game made by Cygames,

which is available for Steam , Android and Apple devices.

It is currently one of the most successful Apps in the asian region.

Similar to its competitor's Shadowverse is a one-on-one experience,

where you are trying to win against your opponent in a fair card game fight.

It is possible to battle versus a human or an A.I. opponent.

Every player brings a self created 40 card deck into the arena,

which features countless minions, spells and amulets.

With the help of these cards, skill and a bit of luck your task is it

to reduce the life points of your enemy from 20 down to 0 and win the game.

On top of that there are also alternative ways to win a game through various card effects.

At the start of each turn the active player will draw the top card of his deck

and he is increasing it`s maximum amount of play points by one, up to a limit of ten.

Play Points can be used to pay the cost to play a card

and will regenerate at the start of each turn to the maximum you currently have available.

That is a well known system, which should be familiar to anyone who is an experienced card game player.

Maybe not with the term play point, but you surely know the term Mana, am I right?!

The specific costs of a card can be found at the top left corner,

as a showcase we will have a look at a follower called Goblin Leader,

which is costing 4 play points.

In general you will get stronger cards the more play points you need to invest for it.

As a result of it you will play rather small creatures

and weak spells early in the game,

while the power level is growing the longer

a game is going on until you are ready to drop your strongest tools out of your deck in the endgame

The Goblin Leader as a follower

also has an attack and defence stat,

which can be found at the bottom of a card, symbolized by the blue and red icon.

In our example therefore two attack and three defence.

The attack is in this case the damage that a follower is doing,

while the defence is similar to how much damage a unit can take before getting destroyed.

Follower will remain on the field as long as

their defence is not reduce to zero or lower

and will be your main source of damage to reduce your opponents life points.

Besides followers you also have spells in the game,

which can be used for single time instantly activated effects,

and amulets, which have ongoing or time limited effects that will remain for multiple turns on the field.

A very unique and important feature of Shadowverse

is furthermore the so called Evolution ability.

This is a highly limited mechanics, that can be used after a specific amount of time in a match

on any unevolved follower available on the battlefield.

This will not only change the artwork of the card,

on top of that increases the stats,

allows for some extra effects on specific followers

and you can attack enemy followers on the same turn you have played the unit.

This dynamic game element is only available

right now in Shadowverse

and one of the reasons why the game is so successful.

It results in a fast battle between the competitors

and swing turns, which would otherwise not possible in this way.

This mechanic in combination with the super quick,

smooth animations and the mobile focus

are keys for a fast paced gameplay which will give you an average game time of five to ten minutes.

It is perfect for a quick round on the go,

but nonetheless has a great game depth

and countless different card combinations and deck possibilities to try out.

Nowadays Shadowverse has four expansions out in the wild,

so a decent amount of different cards for every of the seven available classes in the game.

This shouldn`t discourage you as a beginner,

but instead brings me to a very important point

and why I am personally always recommending Shadowverse to a newcomer in the card game genre.

It is a free to play game that can be played without paying a dime.

Contrary to competitors in the market it is way more interested in giving you a great new player experience

and will give you tons of free booster packs and cards to help you out early on.

Blizzard's card game Hearthstone will for example give you

a handful of packs for the start, meanwhile Shadowverse is a paradise for any collector.

Depending on the start promotion that is currently running

you will get up to 100 packs without much trouble as a starting package

even after that more free stuff is waiting with a daily

login bonus, monthly promotions, achievements and much more.

The Japanese have understand how to create a satisfying and fun product,

which is probably one of the reasons why the game is flourishing as it is right now.

And when we are talking about free stuff anyway:

Besides a multiplayer mode, which contains ranked, casual

an arena style tournament mode,

there is also a lengthy solo adventure story mode.

For each of the seven classes

you can play a part of an ongoing story,

which will of course benefit you with additional rewards when you complete the missions.

The story mode is potentially a great playground for anyone

who is not too interested in playing against humans and prefers the A.I. opponents.

So, you see there is a lot to explore in this game and I hope this small overview

was giving you a pleasent first look into it.

DIY Anthropologie Wall Hanging - KayleyMelissa - Duration: 4:56.

- Hey guys, Kayley here.

I'm back with another DIY because you guys have been

asking for them so I decided today, I'm gonna go

the home decor route.

Montage.

I took inspiration from Anthropologie because

I found these wall hangings there that were

$100 and $200 dollars each.

I mean, what?

So I decided to remake those for under $20 each.

And, bonus, it took me less than an episode of Friends for

each of these to create these less than $200 masterpieces.

I hope you guys enjoy, let's get into it.

I'm gonna start with the basic.

For your base you will need a 12 inch ring,

which you can find on Amazon.

Yarn in the color and texture of your choice,

and scissors.

For step one, start by folding a piece of yarn next to

your ring and decide how long you want your strands to be.

Cut that piece and use it as a guide to cut about

25 pieces in total.

I don't really worry about being super precise

with the lengths, because I like the ends to have

kind of a natural tapered look to them.

Now you're gonna fold your yarn in half and you're

ready to tie it to the ring.

You're gonna create a knot by wrapping the fold of the yarn

over the ring, and tucking the ends through the loop.

Continue adding the loops until all of your yarn

is on the ring.

I think it helps to prop up one side of the ring

so you don't have to keep picking it up

every time you tie a new piece,

so I used a little bit of the yarn to hold it up.

Once you've tied all the yarn, take a look at the ends

and make sure everything looks good.

Sometimes there are a couple of stray long hairs

that I have to cut so that everything works.

And that's it.

You can always play with different lengths or colors,

even add a braid in.

It's all up to you and your imagination.

And I think even the least crafty among you

can pull this one off.

Now onto the arcs.

For this you're going to start with the steps

from our first wall hanging.

I kept the yarn on this one a little on the short side

and I used about 30 pieces of yarn.

Then you'll need an 8 inch ring, and optionally

some ribbon or leather cord and wooden beads.

We're gonna start by adding the second ring.

You're gonna grab about 14 inches more of yarn

or you can choose to add in a new texture

and I'm using some leather cord.

Start by tying a half knot, leaving a tiny tail

and align the tail with the rings.

Then wrap all of that together.

At the end of the wrap, tie another half knot

on the back of the rings as tight as you can.

And cut off the tail.

If you want, you can add a little glue for extra security.

Now this is super optional but if you want,

grab some string and tie it to the top of the ring

just like we did with the yarn.

Then shimmy it a little, so it hides in the cracks

of the wrap we just did.

Then add a few beads onto it, and knot the string

a few inches up from that.

Cut off the extra ends, and you're done.

I really like how stylish and expensive this looks.

It looks like ones that I've seen for $100

but this one cost me less than $15 to make.

And now we're onto our fringed wall hanging.

For this one, you will need a 14 inch ring,

a 2 1/2 inch dowel which you can pick up

at any craft store.

Two colors of yarn, scissors, and glue.

First you're gonna place the dowel

where you would like your first layer of fringe to sit.

Then cut it to size.

I'm not fancy so I just used my kitchen scissors.

Optionally you can paint or stain the dowels in any color

you like, but I decided to leave them natural.

Now you're gonna cut your yarn.

For the top I'm using this cream color and for the bottom

I'm using a darker, cozy gray.

For the top I measured each piece about 24 inches long

and I used 22 pieces.

And for the bottom I made them slightly longer

at 28 inches long and I did 30 pieces.

Now all that's left is to knot the yarn.

Knot the shorter yarn onto your top dowel using

the same loop and pull method that I showed you earlier.

Then repeat the same thing with the longer yarn

on the second dowel.

And to finish everything off, grab a bit of glue

and glue down the bottom dowel first.

Hot glue is always the easiest way to go,

but you could also use E6000 for some really strong hold.

And then glue down your second dowel a little farther up,

and you're done.

I love the split level on this one.

You can mix up any color combo to fit your style.

It looks amazing and it comes together pretty quickly.

There you go.

Three inexpensive ways to make some beautiful wall art.

I feel like if you like braiding hair,

tying knots isn't far behind that.

Every IAAF World Championships produces a few medallists who rise to the occasion but can genuinely be called a surprise to be seen climbing the podium.

However, come the evening of 6 August, with more favoured women struggling to find their best form, Peinado equalled her national record of 4.65m on her

When one looks back at this edition in London one of the names that will doubtless fit into this category, regardless of what the future holds, will be the Venezuelan pole vaulter Robeilys Peinado

In truth, she was on almost nobody's radar to be among the medallists.

She also won the silver medal last summer at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

However, a knowledge of the events of the last 12 months means that it was something of a surprise that Peinado was competing in London at all, let alone taking a medal.

In Rio, ahead of the Olympic Games last summer and during her final training session before the competition, she broke a pole while attempting a jump and the shards sliced through her left hand between her thumb and forefinger.

There were initial fears that there had been nerve damage and doctors warned her and her coach Wiaczesław Kaliniczenko – best known as the

former coach of both Monika Pyrek and Piotr Lisek – that she might not regain the full use of her hand and that her grip might be impaired.

Fortunately, the worst-case scenario did not come to pass but she hardly did any training during the winter, not vaulting at all until February this year, and it was only then that she returned to the Polish city of Szczecin, where

Kaliniczenko is based with his multi-national group and where she has spent much of her time since 2015, before getting back into serious training. Progress was quick though once she was competing again.

Global warming and Korea: climate change's influence on residents - Duration: 4:26.

Combating climate change is no longer an option, but a necessity.

With temperatures steadily creeping up, meteorologists say by 20-70, summer could stretch half a

year.

For our news features tonight Lee Unshin looks into the inevitable consequences ahead as

the mercury spikes, and what can be done to prevent extreme changes.

Coffea Arabica, is one of the world's most loved coffee beans, accounting for over 60-percent

of the global coffee production.

The evergreen shrub is naturally found throughout warmer regions in Africa, Latin America, and

Southeast Asia... but this farm, blanketed with thousands of Arabica trees is in South

Korea.

Korea started to grow coffee trees not too long ago.

As the plant can tolerate low temperatures, but not frost... it would have been nearly

impossible to grow these in the past, as winters were harsher.

"The ideal temperature for Arabica ranges from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.

40 or 50 years ago, we would've had to have many small greenhouses instead of large-scale

vinyl greenhouses like this one, with heaters everywhere in the farm to keep it warm.

Nowadays, the underground heating system is enough to keep the temperature right, so it

saves costs."

Shorter, warmer winters have brought about other shifts in the local agriculture industry.

Jeju Island used to be home of subtropical Jeju Tangerines, producing over 99-percent

of the fruit.

But they have been harvested on the mainland for about a decade now.

Other regional specialties such as Cheongdo Peaches and Daegu Apples have lost their meaning

as the planting boundaries have moved northward over the years.

"Due to global warming, the nation is turning into a subtropical location, with average

temperatures rising, tropical nights lasting longer, and precipitation patterns shifting.

We can find a way to take advantage of the climate change in agriculture and fishery

industries caused by shifting climate, but global warming also brings meteorological

disasters and abnormal conditions... that lead to all kinds of damage."

Over the past century, average yearly temperatures have increased by nearly 2 degrees Celsius

And these higher temperatures have brought about visible effects,... with the number

of people admitted to hospital with symptoms caused by heatwaves in July doubling over

the past 5 years.

"I'm sweating the moment I step outside.

I didn't have to use AC as often in the past, but now I blast it all day.

I'm worried it will get even hotter."

"About 20 years ago, I don't recall feeling suffocated by the heat or tropical nights

keeping me up."

A day with an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius or higher.

That's how some experts define a summer day.

About one hundred years ago, here in Seoul, summer lasted for 94 days.

But in recent years...the hot season has dragged on for some 130 days.

"The longer summers are caused by many factors but they're mostly centered around rising

global greenhouse gas emissions.

If the gas emissions continue to follow the current trend, it will lead to global carbon

dioxide readings doubling by the year 2100.

By then, it's expected that Korea will have 40 more days of summer than now."

As one of the 200-odd nations that have agreed to the Paris Climate Accord, Korea aims to

combat global warming by curbing greenhouse gas emissions by 37 percent by 2030.

But that alone won't alleviate extreme weather change.

"Carbon dioxide spreads easily, meaning one country's CO2 emissions will affect other

nations.

So in order to see some results in combating climate change... it would require all nations'

participation.

Korea is taking an active part, by pursuing its reduction goals... but other than appeasement,

local adaptation policies for extreme changes should be followed."

As the changes we see today are the outcome of decades of global industrialization...

for the time being, researchers say Korea can expect even more dire shifts of climate

ahead.

So while efforts to eliminate the root cause are a must, just as important, is securing

infrastructure to help cope with the immediate changes that affect the day-to-day lives of

residents.

For Dina Asher-Smith, the IAAF World Championships London 2017 in the London Stadium was always going to be a poignant affair.

When the arena in the north-east of her home city was the centre piece of the 2012 Olympic Games, the future global sprint finalist and British record breaker from south-east London was a volunteer kit carrier.

Indeed, the 16-year-old Asher-Smith carried the belongings of one of the stars of the Games on the night that entered British sporting history as Super Saturday

In the space of 45 unforgettable minutes, a trio of athletes representing the host nation all won gold medals: Jessica Ennis-Hill in the heptathlon, Greg Rutherford in the long jump and Mo Farah in the 10,000m

In fact, it was Asher-Smith who transported Ennis-Hill's gear from the call room out into the cauldron of the Olympic Stadium before the Briton clinched the heptathlon title with a winning run in the 800m.

En route, the teenager received a curious look from Ennis-Hill's GB team-mate Katarina Johnson-Thompson, as if to say "What on earth are you doing here?"

Two weeks earlier, the pair had been members of the British squad at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona - Asher-Smith finishing seventh in the 200m final, Johnson-Thompson taking gold in the long jump.

The young woman from Bromley - the south-east London suburb that was also home to HG Wells, the celebrated author who penned The War of the Worlds - has good reason to be grateful that she has the opportunity to take on the rest of the planet in her home city.

On 17 February Asher-Smith's world looked to have fallen apart. While attempting to complete a final repetition in a bench-jumping exercise in the gym when she fell awkwardly and fractured a bone in her right foot.

At that stage, the IAAF World Championships looked a remote prospect for the woman who finished fifth in the 200m final in Beijing in 2015, breaking Kathy Cook's 31-year-old British record with a time of 22.07, and who occupied the same place at the Olympic Games in Rio last year

As recently as the beginning of June, Asher-Smith was still only able to run on grass. At the British Championships on 1 July, she ran 11.41 in the 100m and 11.53 for sixth place in the final – half a second down on the British record of 10.99 she set on the London Stadium track at the 2015 Anniversary Games IAAF Diamond League meeting.

Undaunted, she put herself on the line in the 2017 edition of the IAAF London Diamond League eight days later, finishing sixth in her 100m heat in 11.51. She then departed for Italy, clocking 11.41 for 100m in Lignano and 23.15 in her first 200m of the year in Padova on 16 July.

Given that the Ivorian Ta Lou is one of five women in the championships who have run 22.16 or quicker this year, the history graduate from King's College London seems unlikely to match her Beijing and Rio performances.
