- What's up Trainiacs?
Update on the camp.
You all had some fantastic ideas.
I think they're comin' back.
But not in the same form.
(upbeat music)
Okay so if you haven't been around for a while,
about three, four weeks ago I announced
that I was gonna try to hold
training camps here in Winnipeg.
Try, being the key term.
I ended up jumping the gun a little,
expecting that essentially that three and a half,
four weeks was enough time for people to
book off four or five days for a training camp
and spend $3,000 at the drop of a hat.
I kinda overlooked that fact
that not everyone is in the position that I'm in,
where Triathlon is like absolute tippy-top priority
and traveling to Triathlon things is just what you do.
I'm fortunate, and rare.
I couldn't expect people to do that.
So I called off the camps and I asked for
all of your help.
And I said hey can you go fill out this survey.
527 of you did.
And here are the results.
Number one I asked which feature
of the training camp sounded most appealing to you.
And by a very large margin, it was determining
your season plan, race strategy, training zones.
That's figuring out your heart rate intensities,
when you should do strength training in the year,
when you should do speed work, when you should do recovery,
when your off-season is, all of that.
Which surprised the hell out of me
because I actually thought about that as like,
we've got an afternoon to fill,
what should we do.
Apparently it's the most popular.
Remember that 'cause I think we've got something there.
Second was swim video analysis.
I get it.
And third, group housing to learn together.
Also high on the list, was open water swim training
and training where Taren trains.
Second, what is the most appealing camp to you.
Number one and two were either here or a major location
like Boulder Florida, California.
But both of them were about half the price of the camp
that I was gonna hold.
So it tells me where the price point should be.
If I'm gonna hold a training camp,
I need to focus on the most important things from
number one and then look at how I can get rid
of a lot of the extras that I had added on
because you look up here, nobody cared
about getting a cycling kit.
Both of the things that I can get rid of,
to bring that cost down while keeping the stuff
that everyone really liked.
Next, which one of the following locations
is most appealing to you.
Now number one Winnipeg because I can offer more.
And what I was trying to do is actually sorta
see if Winnipeg could be way over average
by saying that I can offer more there.
But that wasn't the case.
I would actually say that the way that I designed
that question, Florida, UK, and California won out.
Everyone had the opportunity to write down
where they would like me to go.
It goes, Winnipeg, Florida, UK.
I didn't know I had so many followers in the UK.
Which is weird because I'm un-classy and brash.
And UK people are really classy.
I thought I'd rub you the wrong way.
California, Texas, New York, Penticton, Australia.
Maybe I come down south.
Accept your toilet bowls swirl the wrong way.
So essentially what that tells me is that,
I need to come to you.
And that actually makes a lot more sense.
Instead of forcing everyone to pay for their own
plane ticket to come see me, I just buy one plane ticket
and come see you.
This was the big one, the oh I screwed up here.
How much advance notice do you need for a training camp?
Over 77% of you said more than three months.
Almost 28% of you said more than six months.
I gave you three and a half weeks.
Bad form.
Now here's where we get into the future
of Triathlon Taren.
This is how I decide what to keep, what to get rid of.
Because fact of the matter is that I probably
rushed that camp because I didn't have enough time
to consult you properly.
What is most helpful?
By far, the YouTube channel.
In second place, the podcast.
That's all Kim, that's not me.
In third place the free resources.
In fourth place, the Traini-Ass podcast.
So I am here to announce that within
the next couple of weeks, Traini-Ass podcasts.
(clicking)
Kinda bitter-sweet 'cause it's actually growing.
We just had our first episode that passed 2,000 downloads.
But the thing is, we need to be able to focus
on the most important stuff.
We need to be great at a few things,
not good at a whole crap-ton of things.
So if you want to get your question
answered on the Traini-Ass podcast,
go to TriathlonTaren.com/Trainiask
and get it in really quickly.
Also where do you follow Taren?
Trainiask way down there, Zwift way down there.
I think Zwift is a real up and comer though.
I'm gonna hang on to that one.
Twitter, nobody cares about Twitter.
I barely care about Twitter.
You're not gonna see that follow me on Twitter
comin' across the bottom anymore.
But we focus on YouTube, we focus on Facebook,
we focus on Instagram.
Still send workouts to Strava
so you can see what I do.
And the Triathlon Taren podcast.
And then getting into the features
of the potential coaching platform
that we are about to announce.
What feature sounds most appealing to you.
By 57.8%, customized workouts that you can do
every single day.
Number two, office hours with Taren,
essentially what you're looking for is coaching,
regular workouts, a structured plan
that you don't have to pay hundreds of dollars for.
That's what we're goin' for too.
And third, and I was excited to see this.
Kinda surprised 'cause I thought people
would be like well, I don't really wanna interact
with other Trainiacs, I kinda just wanna do my work.
But third, was a social media feed to meet other Trainiacs.
So you can meet people in your town.
You can meet people at a different race.
You can search and you can share that together.
Kind of like Strava but specifically for us Trainiacs.
So that we can feel like a team,
feel accountable to each other
and be motivated by each other.
And which is the most likely way that you'll get your
training plans after the coaching platform comes out?
Assuming that it is good, 44% of you said, Triathlon Taren.
Yes.
Now here's where things got really interesting.
We had a couple of emails that came in
where people said, Taren you have followers
all around the world.
Other coaches, typically are very regional.
They have to have a training camp
because everyone is around them.
That also makes it easier to keep the costs down
because they're already there.
But Trainiacs are all around the world.
And two people separately mentioned, hey why don't you do
a virtual training camp.
Where over the course of over maybe three or four days,
you give workouts and you do it on your own
or we can stream it.
We can figure out the technology to do that.
And back to that first answer,
about what was most popular.
We can do classroom sessions online,
figuring out your race strategy, your nutrition strategy,
your annual training plan, all of that stuff virtually.
Bring the costs way down.
Like I think we can do that very easily.
And then you can still be at home.
You can take care of things that you have to
with work, with family, with whatever it is.
You can fit in those workouts in those classroom sessions
on your own time.
And then at the end of the camp,
like say Sunday night, from noon until
the wee hours of the evening,
I could do a wrap up, one on one, 20 minute session with you
to make sure that everything that we went through,
all of the workouts, all of the figuring out,
all of the education.
Or if you just wanna rap and talk about Petey and Gracie
like we can do that too.
So here's what I'm gonna ask you,
no survey, no go sign up for this or that.
I just wanna get an indication of if that sounds good.
So if that sounds good, hit the like button below
and if you really wanna fancy it up
and you've got ideas, suggestions, comments
about how much you love it,
how much you hate it, comment below.
I think that that is one of the best ideas out there.
'Cause there's Trainiacs all over the place.
And frankly who wants to come to Winnipeg?
I barely wanna come back when I go traveling.
So there we go Trainiacs.
Onward and upward.
Camps, still happening.
A little bit differently.
Later.
