8 Failing Teams - You weren't supposed to do that
8 Olympian Super coaches
1 week to make a difference. - Shall, we wake up?
Out, out!
The Force are an ice hockey team in need of help
Formed just five years ago the squad is made up almost
entirely of police officers from the city of Wichita
Highly trained and skilled off the ice
On it they've never once practiced together
We're a bunch of old, fat cops, that's basically what it is
Ages are mixed, abilities are mixed and with
no leadership, The Force are going nowhere fast.
We need help; we need professional help.
I love this team, I love everybody in this dressing room
but there's really nothing we can't improve on.
Hoping to break The Forces' losing streak is
Canadian hockey coaching legend, Danielle Sauvageau
Now that I'm here it's even more exciting
because its like, wow, this is real now.
Danielle worked with the Canadian Women's ice hockey team
for seven years, winning Olympic silver in Nagano in 1998
and gold at the 2002 games in Salt Lake City.
She's now in Wichita hoping to turn the Forces' fortunes around
The team know that a former Olympic coach is coming to train
them, but so far they have no idea who that person is.
I'm a little bit nervous but I think I'm more excited than anything
Luckily the wait is over, it's time for The Force to meet their coach.
Hi, I'm Danielle Sauvageau, I'm from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
I think it shows here, I have two really common points with you guys,
I'm passionate about hockey and I'm also a police officer for
thirty one years. I've been to seven Olympics, I'm a gold medallist,
sorry but the first gold that we got we needed to beat team USA.
So hopefully we're going to have fun and going to have a
great week and we're going to have a great performance
How's that sound?
- That sounds awesome. - Good.
Annually the Force play a one off grudge match against their biggest
opponents, the local fire department team, The Flying Monkey's.
In five years of competition The Force have never managed a win.
They're really really good with each other and they know where each
other's going to be at. I would consider us still a rookie team.
Matty, bend your legs a little bit more.
If we were to only win one game the whole next year
I would want it to be against the fire department's team.
I only hope those guys lose one game a year, when they play us.
I don't think we could have got anybody better, she's
from law enforcement and probably the best coach we could have got
Danielle's first drill is designed to give her an
idea of the teams passing and skating ability.
Go...go...go.
Ok so too many passes were done towards the player.
You know that some have more hockey experience than others, right?
So you have to recognise that. If the guys who's there has less hockey
experience, you have to give him the puck on the stick, and not
as a slapshot but maybe slower than you would do with others.
To build upon the passing drill, Danielle
is adding in a basic shooting technique
So you look at the goaltender and 99% he's going to think
you're going to shoot but we want them to move, ok?
Tricking the goaltender with the short pass
is a simple but effective way to score
at least that's the theory
So, the efficiency right now is probably
20 - 25% only, even if it's very simple.
WHISTLE
Come on in
It's the end of the team's first session with coach Danielle
We'll continue tomorrow, sounds good, ok good practice you guys
Going from never practicing together as a team, to being
coached by a gold medal winning Olympian hasn't been easy
I'm exhausted, I really am.
There's a difference in skill there's a difference
in energy level and knowledge of the game as well.
Day 2
It's time for The Force's second training session.
Building upon what she saw last night Coach Danielle is
trying to improve the team's basic stick handling technique
Some of you guys when you receive the puck you hold your stick so tight
that the puck bounces back on your stick. When I receive the puck
what I want to see is that you recieve the puck and you are
absorbing the puck. Work on this
push and pull, eye hand coordination, follow through on your pass
Next Two
Good stick handling means better passing
and in Sunday's game better passes will make all the difference.
I never could figure out why my passes were always flying around
like a fish out of water and just ugly and never going where they want
and that's because I wasn't doing it right.
For less experienced players, like team captain Matt, picking
up such a physical sport later on in life, hasn't been easy.
My son Daniel got his birthday present of his ice skates
and we were watching the younger kids his age come in for hockey practice
Daniel turned and looked at me and said I wanna do that.
As Daniel progressed my brother who is also on the Wichita Fire
department, plays on the fire department Flying Monkey hockey team
would pick Daniel up and they would go skating
and I had at that point I kind of had this feeling of like I'm missing it
A couple of us on the highway patrol had gone to lunch and were talking
about ice hockey, we made a pact that if we all three stuck together
would we take the class, it was three of us
and the rest of the class were 5 and 6 years old
So there was no doubt ever about who the worst three on the ice were
Five years on and Matt is now the captain of the team.
Out! Out! Out! Come back, come back, come back
It's the end of coach Danielle's second training sesson
and for some of the players the physical stress of spending almost
five hours on the ice in two days is starting to show
This is very demanding because they're not used to
skate twice in twenty four hours. That was a concern
right from the start, is to make sure that they're going to skate more
this week than they have over the last month or so
DAY THREE
It's the team's third day with their super coach
Having worked on passing, stick handling and shooting techniques
tonight Danielle wants to focus on another basic but fundamental skill
Good evening everyone I hope you've had a great day because this
session will be quite demanding. I would like to introduce you
to Jonathan Hayward, he's a two-time medallist in figure skating.
and from here I'm going to let Jonathan lead. Sounds great?
I cannot wait
Good evening guys, and ladies.
I think we're going to have a lot of fun out here
I'm looking at trying to give you some material that's going to help
you skate better, skate faster, out-manoeuvre everyone else
you're trying to skate around and actually be as agile and
stable on your feet as you can
The team have never had any skating tuition. Let alone Figure Skating.
In a moment you're about to charge as far down the rink and
as fast as you can so I can see how you can move
When I blow the whistle go ahead and take off, stop before you hit
the end. I want to see your best, show me what you've got
Ready? (WHISTLE)
I can see the potential, it just needs a little guidance
Thank you. One push, and see how far you can glide
off one, single thrust
and however far you make it that's the distance of your stride
WHISTLE
We're going to do this again and see if you can improve your stride
in one night
So keep your weight on your back foot as you sit down, dig into the
ice and get as low as you can and yes use the drop to overweight
the skate and get more power out of it. You will be surprised about
how much further you will make it on the same thrust. Ready? Go
Lets see what you got now.
Let's have a show of gloves up here
If you made it further than your first time
put your hand up.
I'll take that kind of result when you only had one shot at it
Good job
It's the end of the team's third training session, there's
now just one more before they take on the flying monkeys
As a coach you always want more time, there's always something else that
you could do, there's always
something that you could have done better
DAY FOUR
This morning it's the player's final training session
with coach Danielle, and she's asked them to meet
her at a car park in the centre of the city for an off
ice review of everything they've learnt this week
I would just like you to handle on your side, come back in the
middle and then on the left again. We also need to go back
on what you've done last night with the skating coach is really to
have this position and to be able to handle the puck properly
Ok so let's set two lines, one in front of
each other and I'm going to give you balls.
Again work on your position, it's easy to just lean
forward, make sure that you have a good position
It's going good so far, it's a little different with a ball
compared to a puck
It's the end of the final training session, Danielle has done everything
she can to give the team the skills and knowledge they need to beat
the fire department and break a five-year losing streak
You know every time you learn something there's
just not enough time and I would
love to have more time to prepare but in a sense we're outta time
MATCH DAY
It's the day of the big game. The training is over, it's now
time for the team to put everything they've learnt into practice
Good morning gentlemen, how are you doing this morning?
Are we ready? -Yes
Are we ready? -Yes
Are we ready? -Yes
There's now nothing more coach Danielle can do. The next
three twelve-minute periods will decide the Forces' fate
Five minutes in and The Force are on the break
A pass comes across the face of goal, the save
is fumbled into the air and Jordan is in the
perfect position to put it into the back of the net
The Force one, Flying Monkey's nil
There are less than two mintues left in the
period and The Force are starting to tire
With just seconds to go the Fire department breakaway and manage to
get an equaliser across the line.
The Force one, Flying Monkey's one.
With two periods still to play it's anybody's game
After the break. the team have turned things around and Scott is on the
attack, but as he about to shot he's
fouled by a Flying Monkey's defenceman
The offending player must now spend two minutes in the penalty box
With the Flying Monkey's down by one player
the Force should have the advantage,
however it doesn't go as planned. The Force one, Flying Monkey's two
It's 2-1 for the opponent but we need to keep going with our game plan
Right now we need to get on the ice and you guys need
to play hockey, you need to have fun out there and
you need to trust yourselves. Now get out there and
be natural about it. Is that understood?
-Yes mam Ok let's go
At the beginning of the third and final period
and The Force are just one goal behind
As The Force pile on the pressure an intercepted pass
lands on Kakia's stick and she shoots for goal
CHEERING
The Force two, Flying Monkey's two
With the scores tied the game is heading towards a
shootout but with less than ten seconds to go The
Flying Monkey's speed towards the Forces' net,
and with the final shot of the game the puck bounces across the line
The game has been stolen in the final three seconds
If you're not proud of your performance today as a
team, meaning that we tried to find a way
to win as a team. I think that you would be very,
very too hard on yourself, way too hard on yourself.
So thank you for the week, I really enjoyed myself, I'm going
back home with a very very new experience and my definition
of happiness is to create moments and this week I did create
moments that I will cherish for a long time. Thank you very much
We won this game, there's no doubt, I mean hands down, we won, it may not
be on the score but just in the experience alone.
That's a big one for us.
Could not be more proud of the team that
is the best game we've ever played.
I have absolutely had a ball
it's pretty disappointing that it's ending.
