Y'all, so I'm going to a NYX event
and I have to make sure my makeup is on point.
So what I'm gonna do right now
is I'm gonna prime.
My gosh, is my primer broken?
(tapping on table)
We're already off to a terrible start.
Years ago my dad played professional baseball
and he played baseball in Japan.
He was super famous in Japan.
I would go visit him.
I was up in Japan, you know what I'm saying,
konnichiwa, domo arigato, yeah, I remember.
I had a Japanese teacher
and she taught me all kind of Japanese.
(speaks in Japanese)
That's counting in Japan, Japanese, yeah.
One summer I went to Japan visiting my dad.
One day my stepmom was like,
"LaToya, I wanna take you to the Destiny's Child concert."
And I was so excited because she surprised me with tickets.
I was like yes, Stepmama.
So stepmoms aren't too bad (laughs).
Now back then my style was so wack.
I remember I used to wear two big old ponytails right here.
Two big old pompoms on my head
with it flipped at the back.
So ugly, so wack, so embarrassing.
I was so terribly dressed.
I don't know who allowed me
to leave my house. (doorbell rings)
But it was a nightmare.
Now who's knocking on my door?
Who's ringing my doorbell?
The evening of the concert I'm like okay.

I grew up on Destiny's Child!
Anyways, I was about to go to the concert, yes!
With my stepmom.
I was so amped.
I was so excited, oh my god.
Beyonce and Kelly and Michelle? Yes!
The dynamic trio.
Anyways, we get to the concert.
We're in VIP seating, uh-huh.
My stepmom and I are in VIP seats.
I'm like, "Stepmama, how the heck you pull this off?
"VIP, girl? You really trying to do your thing
"and show me that you're cool and stuff."
You know how moms are, you know.
"Yeah, I'm the cool mom."
Now I'm like that now.
I'm like to Samia and Zayn,
"I'm the cool mom.
"I'm cool, okay?
"Don't get it twisted."
Anyways, we're there, we're dancing in the crowd
with all the Japanese people.
We're the two only people of color.
They're singing all the songs.

I was out of breath.

And if y'all watch my storytimes,
you know that I have a sweating issue.
It's like dripping sweat.
I'm soaking wet, my hair's wet, and I was in--

Bootylicious! I'm going crazy,
my stepmom going crazy,
and we're just having the best time.
Oh my gosh, and this is when Solange, Beyonce's sister,
she was a backup dancer for Destiny's Child.
So she was doing her thing in the back, girl,
just dancing with her long braids.
She had long braids past her butt.
She was looking so cute.
Anyways, the concert was done and I was so upset.
I was disappointed.
I'm like, "Why?
"But they just came?
"Why are they leaving?
"(sobs) No, Destiny's Child, don't leave me.
"I love you."
So my stepmom was like,
"Okay, LaToya, we gotta go.
"Come on, let's go."
So we're walking not towards the doors.
We're walking towards the stage.
And there were two big old security guards by the stage.
So we head on over to the left side of the stage,
marching, walking, and I'm like where are we going?
Where are we going?
The exit's that way.
And I'm so confused by it.
So my stepmom, she's on her phone
and she makes a call, and she's like,
"Yeah, I'm outside."
No you're not outside, girl.
We're inside. We are inside of the concert.
So she goes to the security guard.
She's like, "Hi, I'm Natalie
"and I have backstage passes to see Destiny's Child."
And then he was like, "Right this way, ma'am."
I said, "What? How the hell?
"You're famous, girl, and you did not tell me?
"Damn, girl, you are the cool stepmama. Dang, girl."
We are going backstage?
Naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw, naw.
This is a dream.
I'm like pinching myself.
This ain't real.
I pinched my stepmom.
She's like, "Girl, can you--
"Why are you pinching me?"
I'm like, "I'm just making sure
"that we are in real life right now.
"I cannot believe this. Stepmama?
You got backstage tickets to see Destiny's Child?"
Hey, my stepmom, she bougie like that.
Like, "Play it cool.
"Don't be acting all crazy, LaToya.
"Just play it cool, you know what I'm saying?"
I just realized that I'm telling this story
and I just did my eyebrows
and the rest of my face isn't getting done.
What's going on? (laughs)
All right, let's clean up my eyebrows here.
So one of the security guards
lead us to the room of Destiny's Child, okay?
It said it right on the door, Destiny's Child's room.
I said, "What? We about to go through these doors?"
I was freaking out.
I was fangirling to the max.
I swear to god I thought I was gonna pass out.
I was going nuts.
My stepmom was so embarrassed.
She's like, "LaToya, just calm down."
She had to ask me time and time again.
Listen, I got this.
This is what I do.
I meet famous people on a reg, ah, in my dream.
You guys, I have to do my eyebrows, bro.
(upbeat music)
All right, y'all, let me move on to my eye shadow.
All right, so then the security guard,
he directs us into the room.
He leads us into the room.
And y'all, Beyonce, Michelle,
and Kelly and Solange.
The first person I laid eyes on,
like my eyes just immediately locked eyes with Beyonce.
She had on this see-through, pinkish, flowy top,
and she didn't have on a bra underneath
and I saw her nipples, y'all!
I saw Beyonce's nipples.
Oh my gosh, she was breathtaking in person.
You know what I'm saying?
She looked so angelic.
And I'm super nervous.
All my nerves, I was so nervous.
I didn't even say one thing.
Michelle was the first one to say anything.
"Hi, I'm Michelle."
Natalie would say, "Hi, I'm Natalie."
Kelly was a bit more timid.
She was like, "Hi, I'm Kelly."
And my stepmom was like, "Hello, I'm Natalie."
And then I was just like, "Hi."
Standing behind Natalie, I was like,
"Hi, everybody. I'm a fan."
Beyonce was like, "Hi, I'm Beyonce."
And I said, "Hi!"
I said it just like that.
That was the first time I just said anything in the room.
I was like, "Hi!"
"Hi, I'm Beyon--"
"Hi!
"Hi!
"Hi! (in slow motion)
"Beyonce, I love you!"
♪ I don't think you're ready for this jelly ♪

(laughs) And then Beyonce was like (laughs)

I'm like, "Yeah! (pounding table)
We have a connection."
And then I hug Michelle.
I hugged Kelly.
I squeezed Beyonce so tight.
And her boobs, they were just so soft.
It felt like Jell-O, you know what I'm saying?
Here I go telling my story and not beating my face.
(upbeat music)
And then after I locked eyes
and had that connection with Beyonce,
Solange stood up from out of her seat.
She's like, "Hi, guys. I'm Solange."
I was like, "Hi, I'm LaToya."
She's like, "Hi, LaToya, I'm Beyonce's younger sister
"and I'm also a backup dancer for Destiny's Child."
And I'm like, "Yes, girl, I saw you on stage.
"I was in the audience.
"Did you see me, girl?
"Did you see me over there?
"I was getting it." (grunts)
My stepmom nudged me, like, "Quiet, just relax.
"Just calm down."
Anyways, I believe Solange and I,
we were around the same age
because we were just talking
and obviously I was super nervous
and oh my gosh, so many emotions are going through me.
But as time went on I kind of calmed down.
And Solange was like, "It's my off day tomorrow."
I was like, "Yeah, it's my off day too." (laughs)
She was like, "Yeah, what do you do?"
And I was like, "Nothing. (laughs)
"It's my off day like every other day, you know.
Just chill at home, watch Japanese t.v. and go to Shibuya."
She's like, "Oh my gosh, you've been to Shibuya?"
I'm like, "Yeah, I go to Shibuya all the time."
Shibuya is a place in Japan.
It's like a downtown where you go shopping
and there's so much good restaurants out there
and people dancing on the street doing hip hop.
She's like, "Oh my gosh, I would love to go to Shibuya."
And my stepmom was like,
"Oh my gosh, Solange, so it's your off day tomorrow?
"I overheard you girls talking.
"We could take you to Shibuya."
And Solange was like, "Oh my gosh, really?
"You could take me to Shibuya?
"Beyonce, can I go?
"Kelly? Kelly? Kelly, can I go?
"Michelle, can I go to Shibuya tomorrow with LaToya?"
I was like, "Yes, she can go, right?
"She can go, right?"
And Beyonce's like, "Yeah, yeah, you can go.
"You can go tomorrow.
"You don't have to work tomorrow
"but I have to practice.
"So unfortunately I can't go."
I was like, "Awe, Beyonce, I want you to come.
"Please, God, Solange is coming with us.
"We're going to Shibuya tomorrow. (claps)
"Hey (snaps fingers), ho (snaps fingers),
"Hey (snaps fingers), ho."
And Solange was like, "Here, take my number."
She pulls out her cell phone
and I'm like, "Stepmom, you got a cell phone
"to put her number in?
"Because I don't have a cell phone."
I felt so wack.
"I, see, I'm not from here.
"I'm from Canada.
"My cell phone is back home in Canada.
"But, you know, my stepmom, she got a cell phone,
"and you can put your number in her cell phone."
Just smoking out my eye right quick
before I move on.
(upbeat music)
We're chopping it up for a good hour up in the backstage
just chilling, just having a good old time
with Destiny's Child.
It was so fun.
We wrap up our conversation.
I give Kelly, Michelle, and Beyonce and Solange
a hug goodbye.
How we were able to get backstage tickets is
my stepmom and her friend Sandra were good friends,
and I guess Sandra was connected to Kelly Rowland,
and Sandra was the one
who hooked up the backstage tickets for us.
Sandra's husband and my dad,
they played on the same team.
So the next day, I was harassing my stepmom.
I'm like, "Okay, when are we gonna pick up Solange?
"What time? What should I wear?
"Where are we going?
"Make sure your planning something real good for us to do.
"Let's show this girl a good time,
"you know what I'm saying?"
Natalie was like, "Okay, let me call her."
But before Natalie could call her, Solange called us.
I was like, "Yes, she didn't forget about us."
And she was like, "Hi! So I'm gonna be ready
"in about an hour.
"I'm at this-and-this-and-that hotel.
"Come pick me up when you're ready."
We went to her bougie-ass hotel to pick her up.
And y'all, when she came out of that hotel
her outfit was something
that I would probably wear today, okay?
She was in the future back then.
She was on point.
I was like, "Yes, Solange."
And then there was me with two pompoms in my hair
with my orange Nike t-shirt with some jeans
and some white dirty-ass flip-flops.
It's like, "Hey, Solange!
"Girl, you looking so cute, girl."
She's like, "Yeah, thank you, you too." (laughs)
I was like, "Yes, girl, thank you.
"I tried today." (laughs)
She was like, (laughs) "Yeah."
All right, let me finish my eyes.
I can't continue.
I need to finish my eyes
because you know what?
When I tell stories and when I'm into something
I use my hands a lot.
So anyways we get to Shibuya,
and Solange was so excited.
She's like, "Oh my gosh, I'm just so excited right now.
"You don't even understand.
"I am about to be shopping in Japan
"and this is a dream."
She was so into fashion, you know?
I was like, "Yeah, it's a dream for me too.
"I mean I been here multiple times,
"but this is a dream.
"To be here with you?
"This is like a dream. Somebody pinch me."
So we park and whatnot,
and the first store we saw
Solange went right into the store.
She bought bare stuff, ah.
Bare, so much stuff.
She had like four pairs of jeans, designer jeans, ah,
$500 a pop, $200 a pop,
you know what I'm saying?
She bought t-shirts, cute little tops.
She bought hair accessories, lipstick.
She was racking it up.
We checked out, $2000.
I'm like, "Damn! I've never seen $2000 before.
"What does that look like?"
She was like, "You know, we work hard.
"You know, when your sister's Beyonce
"and you're a backup dancer, you know,
"you get spoiled.
"This is going on the business.
"And it is a lot of money
"but I work hard, you know, for Beyonce, you know,
"because I've been living in her shadow my whole life."
I'm like, "Yeah, me too, I be working hard."
"Oh," she said, "Oh yeah, what do you do again?"
I'm like, "You know I be working hard on my couch,
"you know, watching, you know, my, my, you know,
"doing stuff. I do stuff on my couch."
How do my eyes look so far? Lie.
The key to a bomb eyeshadow look is blending.
You just have to blend, blend, blend, blend, blend.
So I'm gonna sit here for about two minutes,
and I'm just gonna blend.
So anyways we hit up so many stores.
We were in Shibuya for a good eight hours.
It was like a full-time job, you know?
She was running missions in every single store.
But the thing that I really liked about her shopping is
she knew exactly what she wanted,
you know what I'm saying?
We were literally in the store for like 15, 20 minutes tops
and we were out on to the next.
We went back to my house.
Yes, Solange came to my house, y'all.
Y'all, I need to do my eyes, okay?.
Let me just finish up my eyes real quick.
All right, on my eyelid
I'm using tartelette
in blossom by tarte.
And on my eyelid I'm putting on the color rocker.

"so you know when we were talking about music earlier?"
And I'm like, "Yeah."
She was like, "So my friends B2K

I'm like, "Oh my god, they're gonna blow up?
"They're gonna die? Like what's gonna happen?
"Like, oh my gosh, how?"
She's like, "No, blow up like they are gonna be huge.
"They're gonna be so famous.
"All the girls are gonna love them.
"Their music is so popping.
"Let me play some music for you."

So anyways, Solange, she pulls up B2K
and she starts playing their music.
I remember the song,

And a few months later,

But anyway she chose to go home,
chill out, relax, to get ready for her departure
because they were leaving the very next day.

"I hung out with Solange."
And the funny thing is nobody believed me.
But I had receipts.
I had proof, boo boo, okay?
I had pictures.
I need to find those pictures
because this experience was decades ago.
But trust me.
Anyways, that was my storytime
about when I met Destiny's Child
and hung out with Solange.
And it's crazy because just a few years ago
I saw her in New Orleans at an event
and Lil Jon was there and everything.
And I wanted to approach her
but I felt like I don't think she'll remember me.
Like say if she looks at me like I'm a total idiot,
like a total fool,
like, "Come on, LaToya, I went in your house in Japan?"
And then I was thinking
obviously she would remember something like that.
She went to my house.
We were best friends once upon a time,
you know what I'm saying?
So anyways I didn't approach her
because I felt like she wouldn't remember me
and I didn't wanna have to reexplain how we met,
how we knew each other, we had hanging out.
She would probably think I was like an obsessed, crazy fan
which wasn't the case,
you know what I'm saying?
But I just didn't want her to feel uncomfortable, you know?
So I did not approach her
but I did smile at her, so,
and she smiled back.
But I don't think she recognized me.
I don't know, the next time I see her
I probably will say something to her,
but I don't know.
