The Principle of Charity - Duration: 2:08.

Philosophers often advise people to adopt a principle of charity when evaluating arguments.

That means reading your opponent's argument in its best light, considering its strongest

version, offering friendly amendments to make it even stronger.

Now you might ask, "Why would I want to do that?"

I mean, it's nice to be nice and all, but isn't the point of argument to find the

flaws so we can stamp them out?

Not entirely.

Ultimately, the point of argument is to get at the truth.

And you can often do that best by looking at the strongest version of arguments on the

other side.

The alternative is to set up a straw man version of the argument.

Straw man: easy to knock down.

Incidentally, some people object that the term "straw man" is sexist, and we should

use the term "straw person" instead.

Now someone might respond to that objection by saying, "Well, hey, it doesn't really

help the cause of feminism to associate women with weak, easy to knock down arguments."

But notice that that response actually strawmans the objection.

The point of the objection is that whenever we use the term "man" to refer to a generic

human being—as in "straw man"— we reinforce the idea that men are the standard,

and women are just some kind of afterthought.

The point is if you're interested in getting at the truth, you don't want a straw version

of your opponent's position, but a steel version, or a titanium version—the strongest

possible version you can find.

Now, you might ask: Will that ensure that I get my opponent's position right?

And the answer is: Well, no, not necessarily.

I mean, your opponent might be confused maybe your opponent, and in doing this you might

actually be giving them a stronger version of something than they actually believe.

But so what?

If the point is getting at the truth, don't worry so much about who is right; worry about

what is right.

Consider the best arguments on all sides, and follow the truth where it leads.

That's what the principle of charity is supposed to accomplish.
