They actually let us cross the border yesterday.
Now we're n the first place in the US along the highway.
It is called chicken.
At the border we were welcomed by extra friendly border officers again.
they took our apples and our toast bread.
And then we were allowed to enter the country. Barely.
We're driving the Alaska Hwy to Fairbanks.
About 200 km to go. And we repeatedly pass eroded riverbeds.
Which are incredibly large. Totally crazy.
So on our drive trough Alaska we somehow ended up at the North Pole.
Only 101 days till Christmas.
Are you excited?
I'm totally excited and I finally have to start being good!
Let's buy some presents!
so middle of September in Alaska.
Everything is yellow. It's fall.
And it's just so warm.
Which doesn't mean it's not cold at night, but
now it's really warm. We checked out Fairbanks and
you can view all of downtown in about 15 minutes.
So now we
went for a little hike and then to we go to the hot springs again.
Now we left Fairbanks and we are on our way to
Denali NP. On our way we hopped in the "magic bus".
From the movie "Into the Wild".
It's not the real bus, only a requisite, but
definitely quite interesting.
Now we're in Denali NP.
Our bus is leaving back there.
It drove us into the backcountry.
Further into the park.
Since we're already here, we will
head out again without trail.
And treat ourselves with a sleepover in the cold backcountry.
Our plan is to follow the road for a while.
Until we find a place where can
get up here easier.
To camp up there or behind.
A difficulty is that this morning we only had two degrees.
Actually we're lucky concerning the weather.
We have been told that it is quite warm and that the temperatures are about to drop.
We're in the bush again.
Without defined trails.
Where you have to find your way yourself.
Which is not that easy.
Apparently there are so many animals here ,or it is so emphasized.
That one has to know
how to behave in case of a bear encounter and so on.
In contrast to other parks
to get the permit
to camp somewhere in the backcountry
you have to watch a 30 minute video here.
And we got a bear proof container again.
So...
we are informed, equipped and ready
To sleep somewhere behind this mountain.
So apparently
it is totally legit that they
are that serious about the animals here.
We just hiked through the bush.
Walk around the corner if you can say it this way in the bush.
And there is this huge moose.
With really nice moose antlers.
Or whatever you call it.
But quite a big guy!
So he looks at us and we look at him.
And then...
we leave, because a moose is
nothing to mess with.
So back there you can see him. That's the moose that we encountered.
We're out of the bushes.
Now it's just a steep climb.
Definitely
not less exhausting, especially with the heavy backpack.
Not sure if you can see it
but back there
Above the clouds. There.
You might see parts of the highest mountain of North America: Denali.
Over 6000m. Crazy!
There he is.
Behind or above the clouds.
So Alaska
17th of September
This is just super cold.
If we survive this night
we will definitely drive south.
But there is no snow yet.
It is extremely beautiful here. I think
it's more beautiful than in Tombstone. Just a pity that
we came here that late and that it is that cold already.
Back there some sheep are wandering around.
Next morning.
Just got our bear safe container.
In between
these sheep.
Had to walk through.
Reinhold is a real gangster walking in the middle of the road.
We survived. It was cold.
But somehow it still worked. And
we will try to get a shower somewhere today.
Which we urgently need.
And then we continue south.
Meanwhile we arrived in Anchorage and got information from the visitor center.
There is not much to see, just a museum.
Checking out downtown now. Weather is nice.
Informed ourselves about some hikes in the area.
The rangers in the visitor center recommended to
take our bear spray everywhere, because supposedly
there are bears everywhere here. Film these guys!
But, but
we didn't see that many bears yet. Just dance groups.
Sun
Coffee
Mountains
In Alaska
Pretty cool!
Meanwhile we are in the south of Alaska
In the Kenai-Peninsula area at an inlet.
5pm we decided to go up a quite high mountain.
And
View is amazing again. Still quite warm.
Lucky concerning the weather.
Today we check out a glacier again.
This time in Alaska. This is the Exit Glacier.
We hike up there now and check out
the ice field where the glacier is coming from.
We're on our way up to the glacier and you won't believe it but
up high
Apparently there are still bears. You can't really see it.
But
Two black bears.
At a slope.
So that was it concerning Alaska for us!
We leave. Heading south.
We're back in Canada.
And Reinhold got his work permit.
At the border between Alaska and Yukon.
Not a daily routine for the border officer who was slightly overwhelmed.
But it worked out.
On our way south we're in Whitehorse again.
Behind us is the emblem of the city: the SS Klondike.
We're more or less just passing through.
checking our the stuff we didn't see the first time.
So in Whitehorse we
started towards our
river canoe tour. Now we're back here.
Finally some sports again! Right?
Totally eh!
Sitting in the car the whole day and driving around.
Need some variety! I think the technique...
Yeah, we have to work on that.
Ok but we can stay a little and improve.
Ok, so while Reinhold is working out, I will continue driving.
Let's go.
Ok, bad news guys, we drove way too far!
Now we're in the desert.
Actually that's not true. Back there is Reinhold.
We're in the Carcross Desert.
It is supposedly the smallest desert on earth.
It was too boring for us to always drive the Sienna, so we
got a
nicer vehicle here. Definitely ancient.
Probably eight times older than us, but
quite cool!
