You're overtaking on a blind bend!

Hi, I'm Tom.

I'm traveling through one of the most colorful and vibrant countries in the world

and with the help of local knowledge, I'll be trying to find out what makes this place so special.

Join me on my Journey Through India.

Roughly 300 miles south of Mumbai, Goa is India's smallest state.

A Portuguese colony until 1961, the coastal region is now known for its music, nightlife and beaches.

Not bad, eh?

I could spend a week just sitting on a beach in Goa, but we're here in low season so actually, it's a little bit quiet.

However, there's still plenty to see and do in this beautiful part of India.

High season in Goa runs from October through till January, but if you don't mind the odd downpour,

then low season is a good time to find cheaper room rates and deserted beaches.

But no matter when you visit, there is one thing that stays the same throughout the year.

So the best way to get around Goa is on a scooter.

There are scooter rental shops all over Goa, and to hire one for the day is around 300 rupees,

which is less than $5 and it even comes with a helmet.

What do you think, good look?

There's no instruction on how to drive them.

Right then.

Goa is split into two distinctive districts, north and south.

The north tends to attract a livelier crowd, while the south has a slower pace of life.

In both though, you'll find beautiful golden sand beaches and roads that wind through leafy green hills.

Watch out for the overtaking cars.

How fast am I going? 15 km an hour?

Now that is a view. That is the best of Goa.

Wow.

Goa's beautiful coastline has been attracting visitors ever since the sixties.

In the last five years, however, the number of tourists coming to Goa has almost tripled.

This remarkable growth has attracted hoteliers and restaurateurs from all over India

keen to invest in the state, in the midst of its growing popularity.

Welcome to Purple Martini.

Several years ago, Saarthak Gupta came to Goa with friends on holiday

and loved it so much they decided to open a cliff top bar.

What a great spot.

The place is known for sunsets.

So we love partying in Goa. We were young guys at that time when we started off and for us Goa was

an excuse for us to come here.

None of us are actually restaurateurs or hoteliers by profession, so we learnt it the hard way.

So we're just opening in a couple of hours, so everything is being set right now.

So you're emptying boxes full of booze.

Liquor and beer.

And do you serve a purple martini?

Yeah that's the signature drink.

Okay, okay, what's in it?

It's a vodka-based drink but I can't share the recipe with you.

A secret recipe?

It's a secret recipe.

I know that there's a lot of places, there must be a lot of competition.

How hard is that?

Only on this street, there are about 20-odd restaurants.

So it takes time in Goa to build a brand and

you need to stand out because every restaurant is offering something.

So, for us, we've worked really hard and we've tried to stand out over time,

and now we've become a brand, thankfully. But the competition is immense.

Turning my back on the sea, I'm heading inland towards Old Goa to see the

colonial architecture and Catholic cathedrals that are part of the region's distinctive Portuguese heritage.

Throughout Goa you'll find beautiful churches like this, built in the 17th century when Portugal ruled Goa.

This is called the Basilica of Bom Jesus and not only is it a Unesco World Heritage Site

but it's also where St. Francis Xavier's remains are held.

Goa has had a wide array of rulers over the course of its history,

but it's the Portuguese whose legacy still lives on.

The 450-year reign was a chequered one.

While they established hospitals and schools, they also vigorously converted the locals to Christianity.

Through the colonial-era mansions, the churches, the cuisine and even the language,

Portuguese rule has left a vivid historical mark.

You may not know, but my great, great grandfather was Goan and Catholic so he may have come to this church.

It's quite nice to go back to where your ancestors are from.

History lesson over. It's time for me to experience something that's synonymous to Goan culture, music.

Across the region, but particularly in the north, you can catch live performances

of everything from trance to traditional Konkani.

To learn more about Goa's music scene, I'm meeting up with Vivek Philip,

a music performer and producer who has been living in Goa for more than a decade.

Nice to meet you.

The nice thing about the Goan music community is it's not just local or Indian.

It's so global, we have people from all over the world who come here and they make music.

And we interact, we exchange ideas and it's amazing.

A lot of people would recognize it as a big electronic music scene, EDM scene.

Yeah, that's interesting because Goa's kind of been synonymous with trance and techno

and not just Goa but all of India, the whole live music scene is coming back

and now there's an interesting fusion between electronic music and live music which is taking place.

A lot of creative, people who are working in music, are moving out of Bombay and coming to places like Goa?

Yeah initially I was telling a lot of my friends, "This is the place to move to now," and

you see the number of people moving here, and now you feel like, "Okay guys, that's enough."

What an interesting man Vivek is and what a great place Goa has been, I've absolutely loved it.

But this has got to be my last one because I've got to catch a train in the morning.

For many people, Goa is a holiday destination for beachgoers who want to party.

It is that, but also so much more.

The history and architecture here make it unique to the rest of India and if you happen to come in low season,

fear not, it's the perfect time to appreciate its laid-back culture and experience 'real' Goan life.

But now onto our next stop.

We're at Vasco Da Gama train station. We're about to catch a 16-hour sleeper train to Bangalore.

Okay, so this is inside the train and it's pretty basic, but

you've got an incredible view and what better way to see some of the countryside.

Another reason to take the train to Bangalore is Dudhsagar Falls.

At just under 2,000 feet, this is the second-highest waterfall in India

and the railway line actually crosses over it, offering some amazing views.

It's definitely worth it, that is absolutely stunning.

These huge waterfalls and the train runs right past them.

It's about 7.30pm and they've just served dinner,

which I thought would be on a sort of big silver platter but it's served like this.

A nice little lentil dish. Move one of the five water bottles out the way.

We sort of take a bit of that, mix it with some rice.

Mmm, not bad. A bit of a kick, that's fine.

It's better than you get on any British train, that's for sure.

Traveling by train is a quintessential Indian experience and with more than 7,000 train stations

scattered across the country, this is one of the largest networks in the world.

Sleeper trains also offer the chance to travel huge distances

for not much more than the price of a mid-range hotel room.

Right, it's bedtime, and I've got the bottom bunk which I think is a good thing.

They've provided me with a pillow, two sheets, and they're very nice and clean, and a blanket.

Now I've got to just move this bunk up like this. Little hook comes down and that attaches under here.

There you go, that's one but better make sure your safe.

You don't want one of those coming down on you in the middle of the night.

Right, better get some sleep before we get to Bangalore.

My feet are hanging over the end and hopefully they won't block anyone walking down the aisle

G Minor Riff - Beginner's Double Bass - Duration: 5:54.

- This next piece has lots of right hand

kind of string crossing and I put something together for you

that I thought would

yeah basically be a bit of a right hand workout.

When you bring it up to tempo it's actually quite hard

to play in time, um the backing track is fairly brisk

so yeah we're gonna talk through the notes in this lesson

and talk about the right hand of what you need to do

to play this at tempo.

First of all let's look at the notes

it starts on a couple of bars of D dominant seven

so we play like an open D and then a little

blue-zy phrase let's see how that sounds.

On bar.

So look at those notes, D

plus this blue-zy phrase here C, D flat, hammer on

open D, then D flat to C scissor slide and then pull off

and then the G.

So keep practicing that tun ta tun.

Okay, the main phase is G, C,

F, E

let's go for those few parts so, few uh few notes

so C, G,

C, F,

E

G, C,

F, E

Yeah.

So it's G, the next part is G,

B flat, high B flat,

G sharp, A

Next part, or next uh few notes

is E flat, A, C,

D, D,

and then slide from the D flat to the C

and pull off to the B flat.

So let's hear how it sounds in context.

D, D, C,

D flat C,

B flat G.

Repeat.

But this time instead, you just go D, B flat.

First time through.

Second time through.

D, B flat, third time through.

Same as the first

and the last time through

you've got a slightly different fill

Now here were on the A and we go from the A

sliding it to the C.

So we just play the A and then we slide

and our first finger should go above the C or on the note C.

Oops, oh oh.

Let's hear that again

So it's A, C,

C sharp

C sharp holding onto D, C sharp holding off to C

B flat G.

In context

and then back again

So it's exactly, so you repeat the same thing four times

is what with different variations at the end

different fills.

Number one,

number two,

number one again,

number four,

and now you're starting the next

cycle through in all we've done

is play the G as an open G rather than the low G

it helps you with the fill that you've just played.

So, of course there's a backing track provided

you can go and play along with it.

But it is quite a fast tempo so play this really slowly

and work on the right hand.

And that's what I was gonna say,

is if you look at the string crossing

the right hand

is having to really move about

you might want to practice this very slowly in front

of a mirror or maybe with your right hand

just looking directly at your right hand like I was there

and see if you getting tripped up on anything

well there's a lot of string crossing going on there

and that's the thing that will really slow you down.

As well as of course

getting the notes into the fingers in the left hand

Too Good to Use - Are You Hoarding Stuff You Never Use? - Duration: 9:18.

Too good to use.

What do you do with stuff that you have that's too good to use?

That's a great question and we're going to talk about that today.

Hi there, I'm Angela Brown and this is Ask A House Cleaner.

This is the show where you get to ask a house cleaning question and I get to help you find an answer.

All right, onto today's question which is from a house cleaner who was trying to help

a customer go through a bunch of stuff, and do some hoarding removal.

She ran across a particular, peculiar problem.

The customer was saving a bunch of things that are too good to use.

What do you do with those things?

All right well, the truth is most of us, most of us are guilty of having things that are

too good to use.

If you come to my house right now, I have four sets of dishes.

I have a set of fine China that is too good to use, we only use it at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It's too good to use for the rest of the year.

Don't ask me why, it just is.

It was handed down from somebody else.

All right the second set of dishes that I have is a set of dishes that is too good to use.

They were my husband's dishes when he was a bachelor, and when we got married we bought

our own set of dishes.

We didn't buy our own set, it's a long story.

Now that I started I better tell you the story.

The story is, I didn't have the money for a fancy wedding reception at the time, so

I was going to have an open house inside my house.

In order to rent the dishes, they were going to be a dollar a piece or if I broke them

I had to replace them at a dollar a piece.

Near where I lived there's this great big store, it was a pottery store, that sold all

the exact same kind of dishes for a dollar a piece.

Instead of renting them for a dollar a piece, I bought them for a dollar a piece and then

if we broke them, then I would still have them.

We have that set of dishes and we retired the set of dishes that my husband had when

he was a bachelor.

Now those are too good to use because these other dishes are just clear glass.

They're clear glass on colored, what do you call them, chargers, decorate any plate.

They're great for holidays, for birthdays, for every day, for whatever, they're just

glass plates, they're awesome.

They've got a little decoration in them and they're fancy and whatever.

Those have become our main plates.

Then when I have the nieces and nephews come over, I have a whole set of plastic dishes,

so that if they drop on the floor they don't shutter and break.

We can eat outside and have picnics and stuff like that.

I've got four sets of dishes.

Two of them are too nice to use.

Now in all the houses that I've cleaned over the years, I've run into gobs of people that

have these huge, really expensive China cabinets.

Inside the China cabinets are things that they have that are too good to use.

It's fancy China, it's silver, very nice like little goblets and candle sticks and gravy

pourers and serving spoons and the silverware dishes themselves.

They've got these big ornate boxes that the silverware goes in, just all kinds of things

that you have to dust and clean and polish and wipe down.

Then every year near Thanksgiving or Christmas, you've got to pull all these stuff out and

re-polish and wash and get it ready to use for the holiday.

Most of us have stuff that is just too good to use.

In some people's houses it's their house itself.

They've got like these runners on the carpet so that you won't get the carpets dirty underneath,

and they have covers over their sofas and their chairs, so that if you sit on them you're

not going to get them dirty, because that's too good to use.

Who are the special people that are going to come use these stuff and when are they coming?

There are a lot of people, a lot of us are guilty of this.

We have stuff that's too good to use.

Now when I got married, my sister, bless her heart, she crocheted.

If you know crocheting, it's a little tiny hook and it was like a number 10 size hook

with this very fine thread.

She crocheted me an enormous tablecloth.

My first instinct was, well don't put that on the table because it's too good to use.

It was a huge table, I didn't even have a table at the time that was big enough for this tablecloth.

In all the years I've been married, I've never had a table that was big enough for that tablecloth.

I hate to say this, Jenifer if you're watching this, I'm going to cry, because I hope you

never watch this, I hope you don't find out, but I've never used the table cloth.

It's still in a tight gallon Ziploc bag folded up because, number one, I don't have a table

for it and number two, it's too nice to use.

Now I've got to find somebody that's got a really nice table that can honor this tablecloth

that Jennifer spent enormous hours creating.

I didn't want to spill any food on it, I didn't want to ruin it, it was so nice.

I was going to save it for special occasions and for the time when I got the great big

oak dining room table.

You know, that never happened, the table we have is a round top and it will hold four

or five people and that's about it.

We never did get the table and I've never used the tablecloth.

It's too nice to use and I don't want to ruin it.

What do you have in your house?

What do you have that you're hanging onto that's too nice to use?

Is it some particular clothing that you're saving?

It's a dress, it's a pair of jeans, it's a purse, it's a pair of shoes, we all have stuff,

we're all guilty of having stuff that's too good to use.

We're saving it for some imaginary special occasion or an imaginary special person that's

coming to visit that then we're going to pull out our finest and then what, they're going

to get it dirty, like what is that?

My little sister Julie had this great idea a couple of years ago that she was going to

use all the stuff that was too good to use right now right here in real-time.

She started wearing the fancy jeans and wearing the nice purse and wearing the expensive shoes

even though they were everyday activities.

What happened was, she got a lot of joy out of saying, "I'm the person that's special

enough, I get to wear this stuff that's special enough, because today, today I'm alive, today,

today is the special occasion."

If you're going through a hoarders houses and even hanging on to stuff, there's probably

a lot of stuff like cheap plastic cups or cheap plastic food bins or broken toys or

whatever, there's probably something they can throw away with no regrets.

The regrets are hanging onto things and paying for storage and storing things that are going

to get passed on down to our kids that we have never used, so to our kids they have no value.

They had no value to us because we never used them, we never created an anchor or a bookmark

in their mind that, "Hey, I'm keeping this because this was really important to my mom.

It wasn't important to my mom, she never used it.

It was too good for her, she never used it.

It's just stuff."

Then you pass it on to them and there's no value for them either, but they hang on to

this stuff because they feel the obligation because you hang on to it.

Then we create these generations of hoarders.

The reality is this, if you have stuff that's too nice to use, you're good enough.

Pull it out and use it today.

If you're not going to use it, find a new home for it.

Sell it, give it away or donate it, because right now we're in a place where all of us

have too much stuff.

If you look at the storage units around me, oh my goodness, they're popping up like wildfire.

They're everywhere now.

People are buying and renting these storage units so they can store all these stuff.

It's their family's stuff and their relatives stuff that they've inherited.

It's stuff from previous relationships and previous marriages that I don't know meant

something to them at the time, but it doesn't mean anything to them now.

I promise it doesn't mean anything from here through the future.

They've moved on enough to take these stuff and put it in a storage unit.

If you're going to put it in storage unit, take a picture of it, hang onto the picture

of it and let go of the stuff.

Get rid of it, sell it, give it away, donate it, I don't care what you do with it, but

get rid of it.

There's no sense in us hoarding stuff and hanging onto stuff, because stuff is too good to use.

If you're not going to use it, get rid of it.

My suggestion in the vein of organization, tidying up, cleaning up, it may spark joy,

but if all it is a spark, let it go.

It's either a part of your life or it's not.

If it's not part of it, move on, because as you're evolving, we all evolve every day,

we become new people.

As you move forward, you're not looking at stuff that's in the back, we're not looking

at stuff behind you.

That stuff had meaning 20 years ago, it may not have meaning now, so give yourself permission

to move on.

leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.
