How to use THOUGH correctly | Intermediate/Advanced English Grammar - Duration: 7:00.

Hi everyone, welcome back to English with Max. Today I have a video

for you on how to use the word "though". This video is for people

learning English who have an intermediate to advanced level, so if you are a beginner,

you might find this a bit difficult. But it's free, so if you are a beginner and

you want to watch, that's fine too. As usual, I'd like to remind you that you

And don't forget to subscribe to this channel if you want to be updated on

new videos. All of that is free as well. If you have an intermediate to advanced

level, I'm assuming you already know the words "although" and "but". "But" with one T.

"Butt" with two Ts means "bottom". Anyway if you don't know the meanings of "but" and

"although", I recommend that you first go and look them up in your language,

because if I have to explain them, this video is going to be very long.

You should also look up "despite" if you don't know it already.

Firstly, "though" can be a conjunction, which means it joins two clauses.

In other words, it joins two parts of a sentence. As a conjunction,

it can either mean "despite the fact that" or "but".

Let's look at the first meaning: despite the fact that.

When it has this meaning, you can use it interchangeably with "although".

The only real difference here between "though" and "although" is that "though"

is more commonly used in spoken language. But you can still use it

in formal situations and in written language. Let's see some examples.

I went for a walk though it was cold outside.

I passed the exam though I had barely slept.

You can also put the clause with "though" first. For example:

Though it was cold outside, I went for a walk.

Though I had barely slept, I passed the exam.

It doesn't really matter whether you put the clause with "though" first or second.

Normally you put the part you want to emphasise first, but the meaning stays the same.

You can also put the word "even" in front of "though" to add emphasis.

It just makes what you're saying a bit stronger.

For example: I went for a walk even though it was cold outside.

But be careful, you can't put "even" in front of "although".

You can also put "though" or "although" in front of an adjective.

For example: Though small, the cat can run fast.

Or: The cat, though small, can run fast.

This means: Despite the fact that the cat is small, it can run fast.

The second meaning of "though" is "but".

For example: I'm meeting my friend later though I don't know where.

I don't usually drink coffee though I've had 5 cups today.

You can also use "although" here.

I'm meeting my friend later although I don't know where.

I don't usually drink coffee although I've had five cups today.

Finally, "though" can be an adverb meaning "despite this",

and that is when you put it at the end of a sentence.

Native speakers do this all the time and it's relatively colloquial.

It basically means "but" or "however", but as I said,

it goes at the end of a sentence. It doesn't join two parts of a sentence.

Here are some examples.

I felt sick after eating the entire cake. It tasted good, though.

That's like saying: I felt sick after eating the entire cake, but it tasted good.

I don't like cooking. I like eating, though.

That means: I don't like cooking, but I like eating.

You can also sometimes put it after "thanks" or "thank you".

For example, when you decline something.

Someone could say to you: "Would you like some cake?"

Then you might answer: "I've already had some. Thanks, though."

It's like saying "but thanks" or "thanks anyway".

In these last examples, where "though" is at the end of a sentence,

you cannot replace it with "although". You cannot say:

"I don't like cooking. I like, eating although." No, that doesn't make sense.

And you cannot say: "Thanks, although." And you cannot, I repeat, you cannot put

"but" at the end of a sentence. Some native speakers make this mistake,

particularly in Australia. But you should not copy them.

I know that was a lot of information, but hopefully it's a bit clearer now.

But it's a measure of Prince Philip's pride in his appearance - born of his naval training - and remarkable vitality that he can.

While most eyes were on 36-year-old, ultra-flexible yoga fan Meghan Markle, it was the 96-year-old duke who put in the most impressive performance.

The longest serving royal consort in British history - 70 years of marriage to the Queen - may have retired from official duties in the autumn but he remains a key presence by Her Majesty's side for occasions such as the church at Sandringham Christmas, Remembrance Sunday commemorations and Trooping the Colour.

On Christmas Eve morning, wearing his trademark overcoat, he was one of the first into St Mary Magdalene church for the carol concert.

Up with the lark, he was there again at 8am yesterday for the Holy Communion Service

Eschewing the chauffeur-driven car used by his wife, Philip was back for the 11am service with more than 20 other members of the Royal Family.

He chatted with members of the public and made them laugh when he spotted mother-of-two Heather Hudgins holding her three-month-old daughter Abby.

Making a joke about the child's decorative green bow, he quipped: 'Is it a baby? I thought it was a bunch of flowers.'

Not that it was all about the duke Last year, the Queen was too ill to attend the Christmas Day church service as she recovered from a cold but yesterday she made up for it in style - most notably with a zingy tangerine coat, brimmed hat and wide smile to match.

While they have a combined age of 187, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have never shied away from work.

Despite his advanced age Philip retired from public life only earlier this year.

He performed 110 days of public engagements last year

The Queen, who has handed over some of her duties to other members of the Royal Family, carried out 80 days.

In fact, the Queen referenced the duke's work in her Christmas broadcast as she added a personal note of love and gratitude to the man she emotionally described on their 50th wedding anniversary as her 'strength and stay'

She said: 'Even Prince Philip has decided it's time to slow down a little, having, as he economically put it, done his bit.

'But I know his support and unique sense of humour will remain strong as ever as we enjoy spending Christmas with our family, and look forward to welcoming new members into it next year.'

How that 'new member', Meghan, would have reacted if told of her royal responsibilities and of Philip's example - more than 22,000 solo engagements over the years - no one knows

But it is an impossible record to beat. His legacy is immense

Last year, the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme, which he conceived, celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Set up in the post-war years, it was Philip's way of addressing an issue that had troubled him: Boys leaving school at 15 and spending three years drifting before they began National Service at 18.

From modest beginnings in 1956, the scheme now operates across the world in 140 countries and territories, with more than 2.4million recipients of the award in the UK alone

Open to those aged 14 to 24, it is the best-known and arguably most successful enterprise established by any member of the Royal Family.

The changing nature the Royal Family - moving easily with the times along with the rest of the country - was clear as the minor royals left church yesterday.

Philip was a few paces ahead of the Duchess of Cornwall, the great granddaughter of a Geordie coal miner

Meghan Markle, whose maternal great-great-great-great grandfather was a slave, was also one step behind.

Few would have thought when Philip married the Queen in a rare burst of post-war excitement and extravagance that they would go on to preside over such an extraordinary period of social change.

What's up everyone I'm Melissa Elise and you're watching Melissa Elise TV

Welcome to week 2 of book club for Dragonfly In Amber if you're wondering

what happened to week one it is included in the week 4 video for my Outlander

review so check that out first if you have it otherwise let's jump in

we dive deeper this week into the plot to stop the rising and in a chance encounter

while running for his life Jamie meets the young pickpocket

Claudel who he renames Fergus and brings him into his employment to steal

letters from Prince Charles Stewart Fergus does prove helpful but the

information he's able to get is somewhat inconclusive as exiled King James is

really only interested in his son solidifying himself in France Charles on

the other hand is seeking support from bankers to finance his rising but any

success he's having is hidden from Jamie even though he spends most of his time

with Charles Charles only really talks about his affair with Louise de La Tour

So part of me thought that they could have used the information about Louise

carrying Charles's child to disgrace Charles certainly he if he's not even

accepted in the nobility of French society or at court if the king had

found out about the affair and the child there's no way he would have let him

stay in France he would have sent him back to Rome and that would have been

the end of that but I guess that Clara and Jamie are just unwilling to take

that route mostly I think because Louise would have been disgraced in the process

it's all pretty intriguing stuff Jamie and Claire are like detectives

putting all the pieces of information together but they hit several stalemates

and are unable to act on pretty much any of the information that they get the one

piece of information they're actually able to use comes from a really

unexpected source Comte St. Germain he tells them about his new wine endeavor

with none other than Charles Stewart and by the end of our reading

Jamie hatches a plan to convince the captain of the ship carrying the Comte's

and Charles's wine that a member of the crew has smallpox it falls to Murtagh

to play the role of the six ship mate but not without Claire's help of course

and several herbs to make the symptoms look convincing but several

complications arrive before this plan can actually take place so we'll have to

wait till next week's reading to find out if it actually works

besides Fergus we also meet Mother Hildegarde at L'Hopital where Claire

volunteers her skills in addition to these new characters we also have some

returning appearances starting with Dougal which was pretty unexpected I

didn't think we would see Dougal till they got back to Scotland and then Jamie

and Claire meet with Black Jack Randall again and this produces a whole new

problem as Jamie seeks his revenge but Claire is able to beg him to wait a year

so to ensure that Frank is born in the future

Jamie agrees for a time but is later forced to act leaving only a note of "I'm sorry I had to

This brings me to what I really want to talk about this week

Claire I haven't spent much time talking about Claire I guess because it's a

given that she's the focal point of the story

she's the prominent narrator and point of view the stories told through and of

course she's a great character however for the first time I felt really bad for

her this week up to this point I think maybe a lot of the story at least the

things that have happened to Claire have felt a little bit more like an adventure

I mean she comes through standing stones into another time period and yes her

life is threatened so many times she pretty much own almost dies a couple

times almost gets raped so much happens but she also meets an incredible man and

falls in love and can't leave him and yes she's torn I think a lot of what

Claire goes through is internal turmoil but in the last couple chapters she goes

through a lot of physical danger and pain and suffering

and it just left me feeling so bad for her

if being pregnant wasn't enough with morning sickness and multiple fainting

incidents she's also got the stress of running around trying to keep Jamie out

of trouble or get him out of trouble and on top of that she is poisoned almost

raped and soon enough she will face the hardest struggle yet claire has been

amazing through all of it and even though I don't always agree with her

actions the woman deserves a break after these last chapter
