People often make unfair assumptions about why others have become homeless.
Tragedy and misfortunes can occur at any moment and it is important to remember that homelessness
can happen to anyone at anytime for reasons that have nothing to do with a person's
work ethic or drive.
So here are the top 10 celebrities who used to be homeless.
Starting us off in at number 10 we have Dr. Phil.
Back in 2009, Dr. Phil opened up about his experience with being homeless when he was
a young boy.
He said the summer before he became a teenager, he was homeless, living in a car with his
dad in Kansas City.
The two of them eventually got a room at a YMCA for five dollars a week and then they
were able to scrape together enough money for a deposit on a one-bedroom apartment that
had no running water, electricity, hear or air-conditioning.
It is really humbling to see him take those experiences and turn himself into a successful
person.
Next up in at number 9 is Steve Harvey.
When he first started out his career as a comedian in the late 80's, he went through
a lot of hardships and struggles.
After he spilt up with his first wife, he would send the majority of his paychecks to
her and his two children and once some more of his gigs fell through, he was suddenly
homeless.
He began living out of his car and he would use an igloo cooler as a refrigerator.
He would clean himself up in hotel bathrooms, gas stations or swimming pool showers.
This rough patch lasted for about three years before he was called in to appear at the Apollo
which gave him his big break.
Daniel Craig comes in at number 8.
Yeah that's right, James Bond once had to sleep on park benches in London before he
got his big break.
Daniel Craig is known worldwide for his roles in the Bond Franchise but it took him many
years and a lot of struggling to get there.
He would sleep on his friend's couches and on park benches before his career took off.
It's hard to believe that he was ever homeless but good for him for taking a negative experience
in his life and making it into a positive one.
And now in at number 7 is Carmen Electra.
Despite catching a break in her early 20's touring with Prince, she went through a whirlwind
and found herself homeless.
Once the dancing gig with Prince ended, her boyfriend at the time stole all of her savings
and she found herself crying on a park bench in Hollywood without a dime to her name or
a place to stay.
In an interview, she said she considered moving back to her home in Cincinnati but she said
she would either need to make it on her own or just go home.
And then lucky for her, Baywatch fell into her lap and she became a mega star.
Halle Berry makes an appearance in at number 6.
When Halle Berry first moved to New York City, she had some cash in her pocket from a modeling
gig but she quickly realized that cash won't stretch a long way in such an expensive city.
Three months later she was completely out of money and she asked her mother to send
her some cash but her mother refused.
So Halle Berry was all alone and she had to figure it out on her own.
So she moved into a homeless shelter got a waitressing job.
Then she found a bartending job and was able to financially support herself.
Number 5 brings us to Jennifer Lopez.
She was 18 years old when she was forced to sleep on the couch in a dance studio after
she had a really big argument with her mother about her career choices.
They had a falling out because Jennifer Lopez didn't want to go to college, she wanted
to become a full-time dancer.
So, she was basically homeless and didn't have a place to live.
It didn't take her long to prove her mother wrong.
Within a year, she got a role on In living Color and her career began to take off.
Chris Pratt in at number 4.
Before Chris Pratt appeared in successful TV shows and movies such as Guardians of the
Galaxy, he was actually homeless and living in a van.
After he graduated from High school, he moved to Hawaii with some of his friends and they
set up camp on a beach.
He slept in this van that had a decal of Scooby-Doo and Shaggy while he worked part time at a
Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant.
At work he met a director who gave him a part in Cursed Part 3.
Well that was his ticket out of Maui and now he is a super successful A list actor.
Jim Carrey laughs his way into number 3.
He actually experienced homelessness at the young age of 12 when his father lost his job.
He was forced to live in a van that was parked in different places throughout Canada and
he dropped out of high school.
His family eventually moved into a tent on his older sister's lawn and parked the van
in the driveway.
Jim Carrey said that it was during these tough times that he actually developed his sense
of humor.
James Cameron directs himself in at number 2.
Yeah that's right, the director of Titanic and Avatar was once an unknown Canadian director
that nobody in the industry wanted to work with.
The only credit to his name was when he directed Piranha II which did not do well at the box
office.
So he found himself with barley any money to survive on and he was staying with some
friends and living in his car when he finally started working on a screenplay that would
eventually become The Terminator.
Finally in at number 1 is Steve Jobs.
The Apple founder and former CEO had a long, hard journey to reach success and fortune.
When Steve Jobs was in college, he decided to drop out which ultimately left him without
a dorm room and a place to stay.
He was homeless and it was reported that he had to collect coke bottles in order to earn
money for food.
His decision to drop out of college eventually paid off because it lead him into founding
one of the most successful companies of all time.
