Hi everybody!

Since it's such a nice day here, Squeaks and I thought we'd head over to the playground.

I have to admit, though -- some of the rides on the playground -- like the ones that go

around...and around...and around...kind of make me dizzy!

If you've ever spun around in circles too long, then you know what being dizzy feels

like.

Everything around you seems like it's spinning, even though you're not!

If you've ever wondered why this happens, you're not alone!

One viewer recently emailed us asking: Why do we get dizzy?

And that's a great question, with a really interesting answer!

Believe it or not, the reason we get dizzy has to do with our ears.

Yes, our ears do more than help us hear things.

They have another job, too—to help us keep our balance, which means they help keep us

steady so that we don't fall over!

To see how that works, let's look at what's going on deep inside your ears.

If you could see way inside your ears, you'd see a part that looks like this.

This is called your inner ear.

There's a part that looks kind of curly, like a snail shell...and there's a part

that's made of three loops.

And each loop points in a different direction.

One points up and down...one points to the back of your head...and one points side to

side.

These loops are what help you keep your balance.

They have fluid inside them, a liquid that's a little bit like water.

And the insides of these loops have something else, too— lots of tiny little hairs.

These hairs stick up into the fluid.

The bottoms of the hairs stay in one place, but the tops can move back and forth as the

fluid swishes around.

Now, these hairs have a special job.

They send signals to the brain.

And those signals tell the brain which way your head is facing.

For example, when you lie down at night to go to sleep, the fluid that's in the loops

moves.

And when the fluid moves...the tops of the hairs move.

So, as you're settling into bed, they tell the brain...hey, we're lying down!

And if you nod our head yes...the fluid moves again...and the hairs send signals to the

brain, saying, we're moving up and down!

Now, as long as we're doing simple movements like that, everything's fine.

In fact, even if you spin slowly around in a circle, you won't get dizzy.

As you turn, the little hairs tell your brain that you're turning in a circle.

And when you stop, they tell the brain that you've stopped moving, so everything's

fine.

But...when you spin around a lot, really fast, the fluid in those loops starts sloshing around.

The hairs tell the brain that you're spinning.

But!

When you stop, it takes a little while for the fluid to stop moving, too.

And if the fluid is still moving...the hairs are telling the brain that you're still

moving.

So, even though you've stopped twirling around in a circle...your brain still thinks

you're moving...which is why everything seems like it's spinning around you.

Thankfully, it only takes a few seconds for the fluid in your inner ears to settle down.

And when that happens, the little hairs in your inner ear finally know what's really

going on, and everything gets back to normal.

You've probably heard this melody hundreds of times, but I really stretched and squashed

the timing of notes and added some sad chords underneath.

Let me perform it again for you with the lyrics.

By the way it is my birthday this weekend.

And I'm celebrating with a massive giveaway so stick around to the end of the video for

So the melody has the exact same notes as Happy Birthday, and they're in the exact same

order.

But the rhythm is completely different.

If you're a classical music buff you can probably tell I modelled this rendition after the famous

Prelude In E Minor by Chopin.

That's the one that goes like this: In this video from a couple weeks ago, I played

Happy Birthday in a really weird way by having the notes jump in to all different octaves

and a lot of people didn't recognize it until after I told them what the song was.

Some people could tell it was happy birthday on their first listen though.

And a lot of those folks said it was the rhythm, rather than the notes that gave it away.

So today was kind of like the reverse of that experiment.

I didn't change any of the pitches, but I did completely demolish the rhythm.

Just like you're going to demolish the like button.

And here's something I want to point out about writing music.

A lot of people get fixated on the notes.

What notes am I going to sing?

And the notes are important, but equally, or maybe more important to shaping your original

melody, is the rhythm.

Let's look at the absolute basics of song writing and say that a pretty normal melody,

a couple lines from a song, would probably be 8 bars long and span no more than two octaves.

End to end there are 25 notes in two octaves.

But most popular music uses one of our common Major or Minor keys.

So within that same two octave range there are actually only 15 not options.

The melodies of many of history's greatest hits have less than 15 different notes in

them.

Look at our rhythmic possibilities though.

1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a.

That's the actual industry standard, professional lingo for doing rhythm.

Each syllable in that count is a 16th note.

Also known as a semiquaver.

And that's often the fastest increment you'll use when composing a melody.

16 of those in a bar and we said our melody might be 8 bars long.

That's 128 possible slots for you to put.

Put your 15 notes.

So much more choice when it comes to rhythm than pitch.

So let me turn this into a songwriting tip for you.

If you're stuck for your melody, ignore notes for a bit, and just try clapping.

If you find something that's catchy to clap, that's an amazing jump-off point, and you

can start filling in notes from there.

After all, you're probably dealing with fewer than 15.

hey guys Albe here

so I have a morning off today so I decided to get

the bike and come to the trails nearby

my house and enjoy a little bit I had

messages asking me where I'm from and my

background and what makes me qualified

to talk about motorcycles well in

reality nothing makes me more qualified

than any other motorcycle rider just the

time and the will to do it but let's

start from the beginning

I'm originally from Italy never did any off-roading

other than as I said previously

on one of my other videos going in the

streets of Rome sometimes feel like

off-roading. just like any other italian

kid i started driving two wheels on a

Vespa when i was 14 well a little

earlier than 14 but on the streets

legally when i was 14 and then from

there i had a few scooters and a few

motorcycles when i was 18 just like any

other italian kid I had to go in the

army and luck wanted it that I got

assigned to the motorcycle department so

instead of doing a year shooting around

oh we did some of that but I did

primarily motorcycle stuff, got sent to Rome

which was a lucky break because usually

they send you far away, for a two months

training on how to escort a military

convoy that was actually pretty fun so I

did that then I came out of the army a

year later with a brand new and fresh

motorcycle license so well I got my first

motorcycle. My first motorcycle was a

Aprilia Pegaso, it's a 650 very Street

oriented enduro just think about a

multistrada without all the fancy

electronics with small

wheels and street tires, it looked kind of

like an enduro but in reality it was

just a street bike the taller suspension

came handy in Rome with the street in

those conditions if you ever been in

Rome you know how the people on two

wheels are pretty much all over the

place when you grow up over there you

get into that mentality that you got two

wheels and you can do pretty much almost

whatever you want, sidewalk, steps and

pretty much anything else that came in

between, so after that I started working

and I was lucky enough to be able to

afford a brand-new cbr600, it was my

first CBR f4i it was pretty fun love

that bike and then I decided to come to

the states and so I packed my bags went to

my mother told her, Ma' I'm going to America

did all the paperwork hopped on a plane

and here I was my first American bike

was a suzuki bandit 400 that i bought

for 200 bucks now if you want to talk

about pieces of scrap, sorry for the

language but there is no other way of

describing it that's exactly what it was

the Forks spit oil constantly so much so

I had to put a piece of towel with zip

ties around the forks to absorb the oil

and replace it every once in a while so

did the cylinder head spitting oil all

over and there I am stuffing a towel in

it to absorb the oil, so got my suzuki

bandit couldn't afford to fix it so just

kept adding oil to it, then one of my

friends went back to Italy and left me

is old CBR this one was an f3i

after that I actually found a job that

paid decent money and I was able to get

myself another CBR 600rr of the

most outrageous color I could find and

that freaking sparkly orange was all

that, after that I had a kid so I said to

myself you, know I'm getting older I got a

kid I got to start slowing down, so went out and

I bought myself a ducati monster 796 as

much as I loved that bike, i loved the

noise i loved the wat it

looked, man 800cc L-twin it's low as it

gets if you come from Japanese street

bikes so that didn't last long I got

myself the incredible S1000rr

that was a blast, razor sharp fast

as Hell, everything was great until the oil

prices went down and with that I got

laid off, I was working as an oil and gas

pilot in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of

Louisiana so there I am, I'm home looking

for another job with a bunch of time on

my hands and started watching youtube

videos, one of the videos i came across

was an icon video i believe was called

Portland to Dakkar, looking at those

guys going around on those triumph tiger

XC and I was like: " Hey that looks like a

lot of fun" so I started looking into

small adventure bike and the f 800 came

out so got myself an f800gs and started

going off road, well needless to say that

at first it was almost terrifying the

bike is heavy I had no experience off

road and that was it, well I managed to

survive and I fell in love so deeply

with it that i decided to actually start

You've probably heard this melody hundreds of times, but I really stretched and squashed

the timing of notes and added some sad chords underneath.

Let me perform it again for you with the lyrics.

By the way it is my birthday this weekend.

So the melody has the exact same notes as Happy Birthday, and they're in the exact same

order.

But the rhythm is completely different.

If you're a classical music buff you can probably tell I modelled this rendition after the famous

Prelude In E Minor by Chopin.

That's the one that goes like this: In this video from a couple weeks ago, I played

Happy Birthday in a really weird way by having the notes jump in to all different octaves

and a lot of people didn't recognize it until after I told them what the song was.

Some people could tell it was happy birthday on their first listen though.

And a lot of those folks said it was the rhythm, rather than the notes that gave it away.

So today was kind of like the reverse of that experiment.

I didn't change any of the pitches, but I did completely demolish the rhythm.

Just like you're going to demolish the like button.

And here's something I want to point out about writing music.

A lot of people get fixated on the notes.

What notes am I going to sing?

And the notes are important, but equally, or maybe more important to shaping your original

melody, is the rhythm.

Let's look at the absolute basics of song writing and say that a pretty normal melody,

a couple lines from a song, would probably be 8 bars long and span no more than two octaves.

End to end there are 25 notes in two octaves.

But most popular music uses one of our common Major or Minor keys.

So within that same two octave range there are actually only 15 not options.

The melodies of many of history's greatest hits have less than 15 different notes in

them.

Look at our rhythmic possibilities though.

1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a.

That's the actual industry standard, professional lingo for doing rhythm.

Each syllable in that count is a 16th note.

Also known as a semiquaver.

And that's often the fastest increment you'll use when composing a melody.

16 of those in a bar and we said our melody might be 8 bars long.

That's 128 possible slots for you to put.

Put your 15 notes.

So much more choice when it comes to rhythm than pitch.

So let me turn this into a songwriting tip for you.

If you're stuck for your melody, ignore notes for a bit, and just try clapping.

If you find something that's catchy to clap, that's an amazing jump-off point, and you

can start filling in notes from there.

After all, you're probably dealing with fewer than 15.
