A Mistake Screenwriters Make When Structuring Their Screenplays by Gary Goldstein - Duration: 3:25.

Film Courage: Is there a specific structure you use in your screenplays?

Gary Goldstein: Yeah.

Generally I defer to the classic storytelling structure which is the 3-act structure, the

different series of movements across the whole script, I break it down into 3 acts, 4 quarters,

12 sequences.

I try to mix it up a little.

But I'm a big believer in drawing inside the lines and then messing it up.

At least knowing that you've got your framework the way that most stories are told best and

most effectively and you can kind of mess it up and smudge it up and put your stamp

on it, you know.

I'm not such a big believer that what is supposed to happen on page 60, happens exactly

on page 60.

Well if it's page 58 or 63 or if it's based upon the length of the script, page

42.

As long as the movements or the proportion of your story is right, the movements are

kind of traditional…not traditional, classical storytelling.

Because tradition always sounds like you're in a box.

That to me is important.

But I'm a big believer in structure.

I believe you get really found out why your story isn't working when you kind of don't

follow some kind of classic storytelling structure.

Film Courage: So going back to when you were at the writer's bootcamp, how would you

know if a story was great, but it just needed to have more structure infused in it?

Gary Goldstein: Well, I believe you can structure any story.

You have to have enough of a way to expand that story into a full movie.

You know, sometimes you watch a movie and you go "Nothing happened in that movie."

Or "What a bunch of nothing."

It was really because there may not have been enough story.

My very first screenplay, I had three different ideas for scripts and I ended up putting all

three together and I found my story.

Individually each story may not have been enough.

Some how or another, all three of those ideas together just sort of fit like this puzzle

and I was able to create this script.

So there is that approach to it.

But basically, you know a good story when you hear it or you know the beginnings of

a good story or a story that has potential or an interesting character.

A lot of stories are just set up.

It's like "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…"

"Well, that's great.

But what happens then?"

Because that's only taking me through the first act.

The second act is always the most difficult act if you don't know where you are going.

And most anybody can write the first act of a script.

But it's where it goes from there that's tricky.

Sometimes an idea might just be all set-up and there's nothing beyond that.

But if you take another idea and pair it and another idea and bring it in and kind of layer

it, then you may have more of that story.

It's about finding the story.

Like I said, you can structure anything.

You can create a structure as long as there's enough story and finding that story, which

is the challenge.

star Khloe Kardashian to who of which many people blame his failures on the rumored "kardashian

curse".

Lamar odom has become one of the many victims of drug and alcohol abuse and in 2015 was

found unconscious at a prostitution brothel in nevada and was in a coma placed on life

support until his recovery.

Charlie sheen is coming in at number one on our list and is hands down one of the most

notorious celebrity trainwrecks to ever walk the face of the earth.

Charlie Sheen has a troubled history.

He once held a knife to his soon to be ex wife's throat, he overdosed on cocaine in

1998, he accidentally shot his former fiancée Kelly Preston in the arm once which ended

that relationship real quick, and not to mention he has a thing for porn stars.

All of which are only the tip of the iceberg.

action you sew Rhetoric is just the iceberg's tip revealing

the channels of human spirit More than words is all you have to do to make

it visible from outer space Reconsider your bonds to anyone who tells

you to remember your place I'm afraid of time

It's always the right time to start something It never seems the right time to continue

something And nothing is ever finished

I've got too much time But it's not enough

Wish I was taught better Were the persons who taught me taught better?

I wish I could teach better Most of these role models seem like mannequins

selling tie racks It's easy for me to see reactions to my

actions but it's harder for me to understand them

If I could understand a deeper part of your nature and the sameness in our differences

it'd be easier for me to accept it My verbal meanness is a reaction to an unknown

naiveté and my frustration and desire to control it

You should be wary because unless I can find the light, or you can show me, there's likely

to be a pattern a repeat of thoughts, words, actions, conclusions,

and repercussions Words hurt and people say fucked up shit cause

that's where they're at and coming from Saying someone just needs to accept something

is not going to help them and if you're unsure yourself or haven't

or are unwilling to examine then it's more likely you'll be unable

to communicate what you identify But the effectiveness of your communication

relies on both parties You can only get someone so far in how you

present your worldview The other person has to see something of themselves

in it to make the million connections from one explanation

But you still have to deal with difference in personal experiences and everything they've

been taught or worked out And connecting isn't essential, you can

die alone it wouldn't be the first time in history

Conversely, you can meet a million persons and still miss things about the one who means

the most to you We explore our own and appreciate the depths

of all souls but it's the tiny surface things that get on our nerves

It's persons, not nations, religions, or races that get

stirred up The entire galaxy is a mixing pot

I'm sorry you were born and I'm sorry you're how you are, it was all random

I'm happy you were born and I'm so happy you are how you are and I praise your bravery,

persistence, and the steps you're taking There's no rule that anything should make

sense to you And dwell long enough and anything can make

sense to you Reality isn't rigid, but if your mind isn't

fluid, you're likely to be swallowed up
