How the Reformation Shaped Your World - Duration: 5:36.
Five hundred years ago, on October 31, 1517, a German Catholic monk by the name of Martin
Luther posted some complaints he had about the Catholic Church on a church door
in Wittenberg, Germany.
Luther was upset by the Church practice of selling what were known as "indulgences"
to wealthy patrons.
Indulgences might be loosely described as "get out of hell free" cards: pay this
amount to the Church and the Church would make sure you don't suffer unduly for your
sins in the hereafter.
Luther felt very strongly that the practice not only made the Church look bad in the eyes
of the common people, but had no scriptural basis.
He believed the Church needed to reform itself or would lose its legitimacy.
Nobody, including Luther, thought that his complaints—and he had made a list of 95
of them—would amount to much.
He simply wanted to spark a discussion on an issue that deeply concerned him.
Instead, he set off a chain reaction that literally changed the course of history.
The name we give to this change is the Protestant Reformation.
Had Luther limited his criticism of the Church to indulgences as his friend, the Dutch scholar
Erasmus, urged him to do, the matter might have been resolved and the old order preserved.
But the headstrong Luther was not someone to be restrained.
Luther was what we could call today a flawed individual.
He was brilliant and charismatic, but he was also vindictive and stubborn to a fault,
and at the end of his life, sadly anti-Semitic.
Luther believed there should be no separation between the Bible and the believer.
Every individual should have access to the word of God, Luther contended,
as any priest did—or even the Pope.
We take this view for granted now, but in the 16th century it was a radical concept.
And here's why:
For more than a thousand years, the Church had been the dominant religious and political
authority in Europe.
It alone taught Christians how to understand the Bible.
Luther was now challenging the very basis of this authority.
Not surprisingly, the Church didn't take it well.
What began as a squabble between a bold monk and the Catholic hierarchy soon developed
into a titanic and bloody struggle that split Europe into opposing religious factions.
But the consequences of Luther's ideas extended far beyond a religious dispute.
It's not an exaggeration to say that as a result of Luther's ideas the modern individual
was born—a free actor endowed with God-given rights that exist independent of government
or any other institution.
Each person could find those rights by reading and interpreting the Bible for himself.
Of course, to do that, you had to be able to read the Bible.
And throughout the first millennium, right up until Luther's day, only a very few people could.
Books, including the Bible, were all handwritten, a process usually that took months.
This made books rare—and expensive.
Furthermore, most Bibles were written in Latin, the language of the Church, a language familiar
only to the clergy and educated elite.
This exclusivity was one of the many ways in which the Church maintained its power.
Luther answered this problem by translating the Bible into everyday German
so that anyone could read it.
But his efforts would all have been for naught except for the recent invention of the printing
press by a fellow German, Johannes Gutenberg.
The printing press allowed, for the first time in history, books—and soon thereafter,
pamphlets and newspapers—to be widely distributed.
Without the printing press, Luther would have likely suffered the same grim fate of reformers
before him like Jan Hus, who was tried, convicted of heresy and burned at the stake.
But because of the printing press, Luther's movement could not be stopped.
And, indeed, could not be controlled.
Bloody religious wars between Catholic and Protestant forces quickly followed on the
heels of Luther's new ideas.
They lasted for two hundred years and cost countless lives.
The Thirty Years' War alone, from 1618 to 1648, is reputed to have led to about eight
million deaths from fighting, famine, and disease.
But out of all this carnage, many positive changes came too.
The Protestant empowerment of the individual led to capitalism and the Enlightenment,
just to name two by-products of Luther's protest.
The American Revolution, with its idea that individuals "endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable Rights" should be free to form their own government, was another.
Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, all but one was a Protestant.
Pronouncing a verdict on an epoch as significant as the Reformation is very difficult.
Perhaps it's best not even to try.
But we can say this: no other single figure made more of an impact on the modern world
than the German Monk, Martin Luther.
And even he would be surprised to know that.

Ravens Playoff Chances: Updated Outlook After Steelers Loss | Heavy.com
The Baltimore Ravens had to feel good about their chances to make the NFL playoffs entering Week 16.
They wrapped up Saturday night feeling even better.
Although Lamar Jackson and company still have to hold off multiple teams pushing for their postseason position, they put themselves in a great spot with a key win.
Even more importantly, the Ravens are keeping the pressure on for the division title.
Baltimore pulled off an impressive 22-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.
They got this done on the road against Philip Rivers and a team who boasted one of the NFL's best records at 11-3 entering the night.
The Chargers also have plenty to play for still as well, considering they're hot on the trail of the Kansas City Chiefs.
We're going to break down the AFC playoff picture and also the chances for the Ravens to either win the division or lock up the final Wild Card spot after this win.

There's quite a bit on the line for the Ravens in the final week and even to finish up Week 16.
In turn, things can play out a variety of ways for them.
They find themselves in position to potentially take control of the AFC North over the Pittsburgh Steelers when the weekend comes to a close.
If that alone isn't interesting enough, consider that Ben Roethlisberger and company draw the 12-win New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 16.
The Ravens, who have won five of their last six, could also land in the final Wild Card spot by winning in Week 17.
It's an ideal spot to control your own destiny when it comes to postseason chances.
Unfortunately, the Ravens can't afford a slip-up with how well both the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans have played.
Ravens' Playoff Chances.
One key aspect that stands out here is the fact that the Ravens currently hold the tiebreaker for the No.
6 seed over the Colts due to win percentage in conference games.
Baltimore now holds a 7-4 conference record while the Colts own a 6-5 mark.
Here's a quick look at the tiebreakers and how they could be used to decide the Wild Card if it comes to that, courtesy of NFL.com.
Head-to-head, if applicable.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
Strength of victory.
Strength of schedule.
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best net points in conference games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.
Coin toss.
Although the Ravens control their fate, the odds improved drastically after the eye-opening win over the Chargers.
As Playoff Status revealed, Baltimore went from having a 66 percent chance to finish on the outside of the playoffs looking in, to just 23 percent with the win.
They now hold a 48 percent chance to win the division and grab the No.
4 seed.
Along with that, the odds show the Ravens have a 17 percent chance to finish at No.
3 and an 11 percent to land in the No.
6 seed.
Update: The Ravens' win along with a loss by the Steelers bumped Baltimore's odds in a big way.
They now have a 60 percent chance to finish in the No.
4 spot and a 16 percent chance to land at No.
3, per Playoff Status.

it's christmas, so what do you do in christmas !
i wanted to make something with christmas feeling in it
so i decorate it with these christmas-style items
and here some minestrone with cheese stars
it was so much fun
and because i used rice cooker to cook spanich omelette, it was really easy
so, let's see how we made it now
the ingredients...
eggs, vegetables mix...
onion, tomato
and carrots
let's beat the eggs
we use everything
we beat the eggs
and now...
we add the vegetables mix
this is really colorful

tuna...
and i'm going to add plenty of vegetables that i found it in my refrigerator
bacon
and butter too
we add some olive oil...
and we add to it our egg mix
and we cook it using rice cooker

Good evening!Welcome to my youtube channel. This is my very first video in Bisaya
on my channel. It's not that I don't want to
but I've been here for five years in New Zealand
and then my husband is KIwi so we speak English all the time. At work
eventhough there are Tagalogs and Bisaya, we still speak English
because it's rude when we don't include the non Filipinos in our conversation
so that's why. I think I'm really used to speaking English
like when I started my channel, I didn't even think about
whether I'm going to speak Bisaya or English, English was my default but I'm a Bisaya
proud Bisaya, I don't want to lose my Bisaya.
So I'm going to be speaking Bisaya in the video. I'm sure there will be lots of people who will understand and
I'm going to put subtitles in English. But before I start the video
I'm going to cook so that when I finish filming, I'm going to eat lunch?
Is that right? Lunch? Wait. Actually I'm only going to cook rice because
there's leftover viand, so I'm only going to cook rice, I'm going to leave it and I'm going to film. I'm sure you guys know what this video is about because
it's in the title, I went shopping at Kmart. It's a bit ironic that my last
video was how to save money and then the video now
I spent money at Kmart. But all these things I bought are Christmas gifts
for family in the Philippines and for family here in New Zealand and I also bought something
for me and Ray. But what is the Bisaya word for ironic? Let me know in the comments
below 'cause I don't know the word for ironic. Guys, I'm going to say it now that
the lighting might not be good in this video because it's 8 at night
sunset is at 9 but this is the best thing about summer here
in New Zealand. I feel like I can do a lot with my day
because there's still daylight until 9 at night. I'm sure if it were winter now
I wouldn't be filming this video, I'll be in bed, under the covers, probably watching
YouTube videos. So I'm going to start with the video. Actually when I went to
Kmart, I think it was my second time there
but it was the first time that I realised it's a good shopping place because
they have everything. I'm also done with my Christmas shopping. I bought
gifts 'cause my sister who's here in New Zealand
is going home to Philippines in December so I bought Christmas gifts for
my sisters, my nieces and nephews, my mom, I don't have a gift for my dad yet
While I was shopping I was thinking of my sister that she won't bring back anything heavy
to Philippines, so there were limitations to what I could buy.
Where do we start? Let's start with the cutest.
This one is for my niece, I'm glad I have a niece 'cause I can
buy stuff like this. It's really cute. My niece is turning one this January
so I think she won't be able to appreciate this but it's really cute, it's like holographic but
actually, it might not be holographic, because it's not the colors of the rainbow. I'm not sure of
the term I think dual chromatic. My sister has 3 children
so she still has 2 children who are boys, so this is what I bought
'cause it really light. I was going to buy something else but it was heavy so I'm glad I
found this, it's really light. I bought the same design. They're seven and five years old
I think so this will suit them. It says for 5+ years and the design
is the same 'cause the other design I didn't really like
it was a scorpion and a cobra. I just bought the same for both of them
The next thing I bought is this, ta-da. This is for my sisters who are twins, my 2 older sisters are
twins but that's not the reason that their gifts are the same. It's really cute, still mermaid themed
makeup brushes. I'm not going to say how much because I think they're going to watch this
video. Oh yeah, there's more. Actually, I still have 2 more nephews here in New Zealand
the children of Ray's older brother. So for the older brother, I bought the same one with
my nephews in the Philippines. Do you guys notice that I like puzzles? When I was young
I really enjoy puzzles, that's what I remember. So when I buy gifts for the
nephews, so instead of clothes, I feel like other people will give them that
I always tend to buy puzzles, like legos,
puzzle cars, or 1000 puzzle pieces so similar to that. So for the other
brother, he's so much younger. I think, I'm not sure, but I think he's 3
years old, two or three years old. I always forget the ages
so this is what I bought, alphabet puzzle, the pieces are large because you
know, if the pieces are small, it's a choking hazard. So it says here, 3 plus years, I
think he's still 2 but I also think it's going to be okay because the pieces are large. So I hope
he'll like this. So next is my other sister,
actually, I have 3 sisters. The 2 are in the Philippines and the other one is
here in New Zealand. So my other sister is going to have a baby soon
in.. I'm not sure, but it's next year. She's going to give birth next year
and I bought something for my nephew. She's going to have a baby boy. So this is what I
bought, it's really cute, it's a onesie. It zips from the top down to the foot.
The print is zebra. It's really cute
and it's for 0 to 3 months, for a newborn, and aside from
that, I bought something else, it's a plastic bib, it's reusable
so if it gets soiled, you can wipe it down and it says here "invert pocket
to create food catching pouch" so like if you invert it, there's a pouch so I
guess you can use it like this. So this is what I bought
for my nephew. The next is ta-da, drawing notebook. If you think that
this is for someone who's a teenager, you're wrong, this is for Ray's dad.
Ray's dad is retired, both of them
his mom and dad, and then when we were visiting lately, his
hobby was drawing. His drawings were on a notebook with lines, it's not really meant for drawing. So I'm really happy
that I found this, it's blank on the inside. He can draw in here and he can put his
collection of drawings in here. The design is panda, it's really cute. I'm sure he likes panda because
he's Chinese. I also like pandas. For Ray's mom, I bought this for her. I'm sure they're not going
to watch this video.
So this is it, it's a candle, the scent is jasmine bamboo and it's a really nice smell
I really like it. Actually, it's like a sampaguita. It's really nice.
I wish I bought one for myself. The material is ceramic. I don't know
the Bisaya word for ceramic, so let me know in the comments below what the Bisaya word is
I'm sure there's a Bisaya word for it right? I also bought chocolate for
the family of Ray's older brother. This is for his family.
It's the same family with the 2 sons, so that's for them. For his wife, I bought this
sweater actually it's a really nice sweater. This is from Jayjay's. They had a closing
down sale, it's not from Kmart.
The original price is $50 if you can see
and it was on sale for, I think I bought it for $10. I wish I bought one for myself 'cause it's really cute.
The details are nice one the sleeves, can I have this?
What else? I think I'm almost done. Ahh, there's more. Ta-da. Earrings.
This is for my mom 'cause my mom is a fashionable person. So hip, so
fashionable and she's more fashionable compared to me because I
wear my clothes again and again and my mom tells me, stop wearing
that dress, people have already seen that on Facebook. Honest to God,
my mom told me that. And there was one time, I was
eating out with Ray and we took a photo. It really wasn't a
date, like we bought a voucher from Groupon, we ate out and
we took a photo because we ate something unique.
It was steak cooked on stone. It was unique and that's why we took a
picture and I posted it on Facebook. My mom messaged me and she said, "Ta,
(that's what she calls me) she said, "Ta, next time you guys go out, tell Ray to wear a better looking
t-shirt okay?"
That'e the story, that's what my mom told me. So we're almost
done. One more bag left. This next thing, I'm not going to
say what it is 'cause I think they watch my videos.

and the reason I had for starting this channel
here on YouTube
The theme is Korean and Asian Skincare
Since many people have commented this to me
or people I know, people at school, people at work
I want to make a video
that's informative and can provide you with information
that you might not have been able to find in another place
Even though a lot of videos exist now
and a lot of blogs
and other resources that one can use to find information
about Kbeauty and Asian beauty products
I feel like there isn't a lot of information available
in spanish
And that's significant because
there's a lot of people especially in Latin America
who are getting into Kpop
Kdramas and
Kbeauty and asian beauty
And they would like to know these things
In this video, I'd like to talk about
certain questions my friends have asked me
and certain topics
that surround the topic of
kbeauty and asian beauty
So, first of all I'd like to talk about
What is the 'hype surrounding' kbeauty and asian beauty?
Why are so many people becoming interested
relatively recently, in the last 2 or 3 years
in the topic of asian beauty
So, first off
I think that through
the popularization of
kdramas, kpop and
and kfashion (korean fashion)
around the world, in the USA,
Europe and Latin America
I think a lot of people have become increasingly interested
not just the fashion and food and other culture related aspects
But also, in the cosmetics and beauty products
because they're skin appearance is attractive
and they're well known for having their skin well-cared for
and clean looking
*notice* However!
Even though kbeauty has been really useful to me
and for a lot of people I know
and a lot of people who have talked about their success using kbeauty and asian beauty products before me
It's not necessarily
the best solution for everyone
For me, since it has been really good for me
I'd like to share my experience with you guys
So that you guys can
use the right products or find things that you love as well
Many of my friends have asked me
How did I get into/find out about kbeauty and asian beauty?
It really started out when I went to University
my first year, one of my good friends
who I am still really close with
Jane! Hi ^_^
I met her when I started school
and she kind of introduced me to
korean movies and she helped guide me kind of
when I was just starting out my discovery of Korean Hallyu interest
in kdramas and korean pop and music
and through that
after watching a number of kpop idols
and kdramas, I started noticing
how nice their skin was
both the women and men
older people and younger people, all ages
they had such nice skin
and since I had just started my first year of University
I was pretty stressed out and
I wasn't eating right
I ate a bunch of junk food, basically a college freshman diet
I had my skin in pretty bad shape
and I wanted to find something to help my skin
and to help improve my self-confidence
and if there was a solution, I really wanted to find it
So from that
I got really into kbeauty and asian beauty
because of the kdramas and kpop
And I started out by searching for a lot of the products
that the idols were endorsing
or that the kdrama commercials were advertising
from certain brands
So through that I've tried a lot of products
that have different functionalities
And to be honest,
there have been products that have worked really well for me
and there have been products that I don't ever want to use again
So that's really another thing
that I want to share with you
Some of the well-known brands I've used are
all of these
are brands I've tried at one point
I haven't used all the products but at least
a number of products at different points
So I'd like to talk about that
and let you guys know which products I've liked
or which ones I don't recommend as much
through my future videos
The next question I've gotten quite a bit
Why are kbeauty and asian beauty products relatively less expensive?
Compared to Western beauty products
And the reason I think this is the case is and from what I've gathered from other sources
In Asia, in particular Korea, Japan
and China too
People give a lot of attention to their facial beauty and skin
and they really take care of their skin
So starting at an early age
they learn to use the right products
to take care of their skin and this is something that throughout their lives
women and men, alike
really seem to value and give importance to
I think that this has really contributed
to the fact that there are many products and brands
that sell their products at a reasonable, baseline cost
And this is really good for us!
Since we're used to paying a higher price in the USA, or Western countries
and other parts of the world
Since it's not something AS common as it is in Asian countries
This also means that the beauty/cosmetic industry
is really developed in Asia
So this has
allowed products like BB cream
that exploded around the world
after it was popularized and came out of Korea (but actually originally from Germany!)
They are much more advanced than
maybe us here in the US
since quite a bit of attention is constantly on the beauty industry
to innovate and create a newer, better product
I think that this has allowed
for the development of the asian beauty industry
and this is all beneficial to us (who live outside of Asia)
for people who are interested in improving their skin
this means we
can potentially get access to products
that may not exist in the US
So really, we just need to search and be aware
Which leads me to my next question
There's so much information out there now
How can you know that certain products or resources you use are trustworthy?
I think that you need to use
your best judgement
Products can offer a lot
but they might only do one of the ten things it says it will do
But if that's enough reason for you to continue
using the product, then keep using it
But there have also been products I've tried that have been awful
I have bad reactions to the product
And I immediately stop using the product
Even if it says it going to be the most amazing product
there's no real reason to continue using it
You have to think a bit
about how there's going to be a lot of information out there
maybe not so much in Spanish
but in English or Korean
and for that reason you need to use caution
and your best judgement in choosing the products
Another thing I'd like to talk about is
Even though there's a lot of products out there
from all kinds of brands and all types of solutions
you do need to be careful using brands/products
that are so cheap
that they might not be
the best things for your skin
I think I've had a lot of hit and misses
and experience with these products
I started out with the most basic
and I've grown to use products of much higher quality
So I feel like
I can share that journey with you guys
So that you guys can have more info when you're choosing
your products
so that you have the most information when choosing
that can help you make the best decisions for your skin
One of the final questions
I've gotten a lot
What are certain keywords you can look for in products
In my opinion,
this has more to do with the type of skin you have
and the goals you want to reach with your skin
For example,
if you have older skin
and you want to prevent wrinkles or spots
you should look for products with "brightening"
or "whitening"
But before you guys freak out
with those words
"Whitening" in kbeauty and asian beauty
doesn't exactly mean
making your skin white
It means
for example, you might have
sun spots or acne scars
which I personally had a lot of
acne scars that had left
my skin with spots
that made my skin look bad overall
Even though I was doing a lot of preventative stuff
and using good products
those scars were still not fading, even after started taking care of my skin
So I started looking for products
that would help me get rid of those
darker spots on my skin
And that didn't mean that I was going to make my skin white
even though you might think I'm a bit pale..
it wasn't with the intention of making my skin white
but instead to balance out my skin tone
So I looked for products that said
"balancing" and "whitening"
*oops forgot to silence my phone*
And those products will be the best ones
to help get rid of those dark spots or scars over time
and to help your skin
be brighter
and have an even skin tone
and you'll feel like you have one balanced color across your skin
even!
So these two keywords and more
are some that I have noticed are good to know
when looking for kbeauty products
and asian beauty products
I'll try to share some more of these words
through future videos
I feel like I maybe didn't cover
everything I should have covered
But I don't want to make this video too long
I'd rather have it as a sort of intro to kbeauty
and basically to let you guys know
I know that there is a lot of information out there
and there are so many resources you can use now
including youtube videos
that already exist on the topic of kbeauty and asian beauty
But I'd still like to share my experience and
all the information that
I've collected over the last 5-6 years
that I've been into this world of kbeauty
and asian cosmetics
To be able to give you this information
that I feel like doesn't exist in Spanish
for the spanish speakers, like me!
That I feel like didn't exist
when I was first trying to get into the world of asian beauty
