Autism and Sleep: Will Changing Mattress help YOU? - Duration: 9:49.

in this video I'm going to be looking at mattresses and if a certain brand of

mattress helps with sleep issues for people with Asperger's and autism

coming up hey I'm dan I've Asperger's syndrome

ADHD OCD and dyslexia and weekly videos on autism and Asperger's so if you're

new around here consider subscribing to learn more so the lovely people at simba

sent me a mattress to try out for 30 days to see if it would improve the

sleep quality and the sleeping conditions of my life so basically I

have Asperger's syndrome and a bunch of people out there already know that if

you have Asperger's syndrome sleeping isn't the easiest thing in the

world I did a video last week on melatonin so you can check that out in

the link in description below if you want to check out to see that video where I

looked at with melatonin helps you sleep now on this video and they look at if

changing your mattress will help you sleep better now for years growing up

I'd always just have a mattress at my parents just bought me and I have like the

bog-standard mattress that came with a bed every time like we upgraded the bed

and it was never really something that I thought about and I'd always have kind

of like back issues and comfort issues just like sitting on the bed and

thinking to myself is this really comfortable am I am I actually liking

this right now so then we bought a new mattress years and years and years ago

just from like a relatively cheap from from a store and it was okay but it

degraded over time and I felt like my sleep has deteriorated also with that

mattress which is quite interesting then we bought a new bed from Ikea and we

actually bought an Ikea mattress with that bed and that was probably the first

time I'd ever spent money on a mattress now the mattress was okay and I noticed

that sleeping on it was better for my back a little bit more than the mattress we

had before that and then simba came from the heavens and said hey "do you want to try out

our mattress now the simba company are famous for their mattresses and their

pillows and the fact that they're super high-tech super high quality and the I

would say it's a luxury awesome item and they're just awesome like I might seen

this company around a few times and they really want to do this video with me so

I said okay that let's do it is pretty awesome so I've been sleeping on their

mattress for the past 30 days I track all my sleep like you saw in my last video with

a sleep app called sleep cycle if I remember off with that link in

description below and basically what I did is I I gave you the data of the

sleep quality from the 30 days before having the mattress and now I've got the

data for the 30 days after having the mattress and it's pretty interesting so

what I'm gonna do so this is the story of how me getting the mattress and

setting it up then I'm going to talk about dose the data show an improvement and

I'm also going to talk about like the sleep quality that I had specifically

through the experience of sleep and what the mattress actually felt like and did

I get a better sleep quality do you know do I think from my judgment did I get a

better sleep quality from that mattress okay so here's the simba mattress

let's get unpacked and sort it out

okay so this is the current bed situation so we get this mattress

on to here now before we get on doing the mattress

I'll give it guys a little bit of a background so basically the idea is that

simba sent me this mattress because they think that this is like the best mattress

in the world obviously because that product and it will outshine my mattress so me

and Nomi we've been tracking our sleep for how long Nomi I don't know a few years so the

current statistics and trends is of all time we have an 85 percent sleep average

I don't know if you can see that i'll put screenshots in anyways you can see it and so if we just

look at the last 30 days our sleep average has been about 84% and that is

not too bad since 77 percent is the average UK that's really low actually okay so

we're gonna do this for 30 days and see if sleeping on this mattress for one

whole month makes any difference to those stats and I'm pretty confident I

will because it looks pretty decent so we're gonna open this now find out

what what the dealio is get this mattress in, alright

let's do it I've taken the old mattress off with the

help of my trusty assistant Nomi me and this is what the underside of the bed looks all

gross and stuff so we gotta' get that mattress on to here now but it's like a self

expanding one so I'm gonna try and do is film it as best I can so you guys can

actually see how how how it goes how it doooos okay here we go here we go

okay so we set it up but obviously gotta wait for it to like inflate and whatever

so we're gonna wait like I don't actually know how long it takes to

inflate but a while by the looks of it but also already feels super squishy

Nomi you just you got it you got to try this so good yeah just just feels so

darn good I'm really excited to actually do this because the the reason we're

doing this is because obviously the people with Aspergers and autism

have some issues with sleep and stuff like that and so we want to see if this

mattress is going to help you because I think that having tools and implementing

things like this like the Bose headphones and this okay they may be

expensive but if they work then it's it's investing in your life and that's

the only thing really worth investing in because gotta' your life has to last your

entire life so anyway we've gotta figure out what to do this I think it's gonna

go down to the office for a bit. Okay so let's just talk about the mattress in

general compared to the mattress I had from Ikea this mattress is way deeper

like it's a bigger mattress is heavier and it will way more compressed it's a

higher quality like by far like a huge standard it's away higher equality now

having this higher quality you know can mean two things between up the mattress

is just super heavy for no reason or there's a lot of stuff packed into it to

make it very very comfortable now actually having this much as it's super

comfy I felt like its head and shoulders above any mattress as I've ever owned in my

life one thing I found though is that like you kind of sink into it cuz kind

of memory foam and when you get off the mattress for the first design the floor

feels super hard and rigid it's crazy because the mattress is so soft when you

come off onto like a hardwood floor it's crazy the difference is nuts and your

body kind of what I felt that difference in my body really really enjoy this

mattress I find that it's very very comfortable and it's very very suited to

me cuz it kinda like molds to to wherever you move in the night life I

like that now the quality of sleep that I have in this mattress is phenomenal

the first night I slept on it I completely knocked out without any kind

of intervals of waking up because my old mattress had like we're all around and I

wake up every now and then and I get comfortable again and then maybe like a

spring pokin' out or something stupid but in this new mattress from simba

I had non of that I had this like just ease of just sleeping like all through the night

which is crazy I've never really experienced that before I pretty much my

life which is just nuts now let's go on to the sleep quality now to me that I'm

looking at data and I'll put the data on the screens here so you guys can both

see what the before and after so this is the before picture now the before you

can see here that you can see this graph slopes down in September because I think

I didn't have my app on in September for some reason I think my phone has a

Barney so you can see here what it picked back up again in October and the

sleep quality is averaging 84% now you can see underneath at the UK's average

is typically 77% so I'm getting above the average of UK by having 84%y

isn't amazing but it's still better than the average of the UK now

the graph shows that there's sort of a decline here as well because again to me

it's as you use a mattress that the worse it gets so let's look at the after

data so this after data shows you that the sleep quality has actually gone up

to 88% sleep average which is amazing like 4% is a huge amount when you're

thinking about sleep now this actually this graph shows our lovely like

increase linear line it drops off right at the end there because my child's

having sleep regression right now on any parents out there will know exactly what

this means and there it's no good so you can see that the actual curve is

going up since having the mattress which is amazing because we had this thing in

November so from November to December there's a huge increase there which I've

never seen before and it's higher than it ever has been on this entire graph

which is basically since I've you know since I started which is basically the

entire length of it now this is pretty amazing I love the fact that the

mattress data shows that I actually increased to me I would say this is

super beneficial now I'm asking that question dose a good quality matteress

improve the sleep quality of somebody with Asperger's syndrome well speaking

from experience I have Asperger's syndrome and I changed the mattress to a

better mattress of better quality and a higher production mattress yeah it

really does make the difference that's what I felt it may not make the

difference for every single person because we're all individual but I would

say the majority would definitely try changing your mattress if you've tried

everything else it's not worth try out if you're very interested in the

specific much as I have I have a link in the description where you can get one

14 Weird Discoveries in Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 ft. Nathaniel Bandy - Duration: 12:51.

It's no surprise that I live and breathe gaming mysteries.

When I'm not spending my time diving into the lore behind games, I'm often trying

to find the strangest things they contain.

Whether this be game-destroying occurrences like how I overloaded Luigi's Mansion to

the point it started falling apart, or trying to open the sealed doors in video games that

taunted me as a child.

When you play through games over and over again you naturally become more and more curious

about how they operate and begin to wonder what strange things developers left behind

in them.

And that's exactly what we're going to talking about in today's videos.

These are some of the strangest things I've encountered in Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 - and

I'm not going to be talking about the common ones you typically see online like the Hell

Valley Trees.

No, we're going pretty deep today - and I'm excited to have Nathaniel Bandy tag

along for the ride.

So here are some of the weirdest oddities these games have to offer…

The Water Worlds of Good Egg Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy 1

Good Egg Galaxy was a pretty standard level.

It got you familiar with a lot of the mechanics in Super Mario Galaxy, and ultimately, a lot

of people remembered it because of the soundtrack.

However, this galaxy also holds a lot of bizarre things in it.

I'm sure by now you've probably seen the sign inside of the house, and if you haven't,

that's basically why a message pops up when you get near the door.

But one of my favorite things about this level is actually a place that passes you by on

your journey for the star for King Kaliente's Battle Fleet.

These are the water worlds of Good Egg Galaxy - a cluster of small quote un quote planets

you can't actually reach normally.

However, if Mario or Luigi do reach them, you can see that you can actually swim in

them.

Whoever made these actually designed them to be able to interact with Mario and Luigi,

and honestly it's really awesome.

Peach's Twin Castles - Super Mario Galaxy 2

At the start of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario is put into a 2d side scrolling world.

Behind this world we can see a lot of things passing by in the background.

But what's interesting is, it actually looks like we're going back to the castle the

whole time we move to the right.

However, this is just what we think is going on.

In reality, Peach has two castles in this area.

One is back upon the hill, and the other is way far off to the right within the town.

During the loading screens we teleport around this huge map, but we never actually go to

that castle in the background.

On my second channel though, I actually explored it a few times and it's pretty neat!

Bowser's Lava Lair's Deadly Warp - Super Mario Galaxy 2

At the end of Bowser's Lava Lair in Super Mario Galaxy 2 we come across a giant door.

Now this door is of course sealed shut, and we need to open it up.

After smashing the various stone panels the door opens and a magic vortex sucks us up.

But this only happens correctly if Mario's position is in the right spot.

If Mario isn't in this spot when activating this door, something deadly and bizarre happens.

So say for instance Mario decides to jump in head first and his entry point into the

door is actually near the frame of the door itself.

Well, we don't get warped to Bowser like we're supposed to.

We get flung out into the void and have a slow, painful death as Mario drifts through

space unable to move.

Doing this actually causes the game to produce some strange sounds as well, and overall it's

a neat experience.

Except for Mario…

Obviously it's horrible for him.

Toy Time Galaxy's Glitched Floating Pipe - Super Mario Galaxy 1

Super Mario Galaxy loads levels and planets a lot differently than Super Mario Galaxy

2.

Often times in the first game, planets for any star exist on the map regardless of the

star you are on.

However, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, this isn't the case as entire paths and planets are unloaded

unless the correct star is selected.

This basically can cause some weird things to happen if you sequence break the game and

access planets before you're supposed to.

One really neat one is a glitched floating pipe that spawns in Toy Time Galaxy.

If Mario or Luigi enter this pipe, they travel to a normal underground area, but if they

ever try to leave it, they will die instantly.

The jumping animation for the pipe is just long enough for the death animation to trigger

before the player can move… and the worst part is, you'll respawn jumping out of the

pipe and burn through all your lives instantly.

What a way to go, man.

Battlerock's Geometry Hole - Super Mario Galaxy 1

Battle rock is an enormous level that we only get to explore a fraction of.

Honestly, it's kind of sad we don't actually get to check out more of it.

Majority of the level has collision and can be walked on, but the biggest issue is that

gravity doesn't function properly when you're in areas you're not supposed to be in.

This makes navigating the giant rock insanely difficult, and you often fall to your death.

However, one of the most interesting things I discovered about this level is that there

is actually a hole in the geometry.

So basically in all 3D models you have polygons that when combined, form the shape of the

object.

If someone doesn't make sure all the polygons are closed, you basically can have a hole

in your model…

And Battlerock has one of those.

Hidden way at the top of the level is a hole in Battlerock's geometry that a player can

actually enter to get inside this massive planet.

Of course, the only thing that awaits someone inside is death, but it's still pretty cool

to know that with hacks you can actually survive inside long enough to check the place out!

The Bizarre Floating Buildings of Cloudy Court Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy 2

In Cloudy Court Galaxy, there's lots of different buildings floating around.

What's strange about these buildings is that all of them lack flooring.

If you were to look up into them, you can see that they are all hollow with staggered

bottoms.

Any seasoned Mario vet would instantly want to jump inside of them and wall kick to the

top, but given how the level unfolds, you often don't have enough cloud uses to get

to a desired area.

Interesting enough, even if you could get there, you can't actually do anything.

Despite being open on the bottom, Mario can't go inside and hits an invisible barrier.

Another bizarre thing in this level actually takes place in the 2D section too.

In all 2D sections in the game Mario is actually trapped between two super tall transparent

walls.

However, if he were to get out of these, we can see we can actually walk on the roof of

the half building that is behind us.

Why the designers made this object have collision, despite Mario never being able to come in

contact with it, is unknown.

The Vanishing Moon of Spin Dig Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy 2

Spin Dig Galaxy was a level I didn't actually enjoy much in the game, but upon returning

to it, I fell in love with it.

The background to this level is superb because it looks like the entire galaxy takes place

within the core of a planet…

But despite seeing this outer world, we actually can never reach it despite how far we travel.

However, within this world is a very, very strange object…

A vanishing moon.

Now some of you may have seen me travel to this area on my second channel, but the gist

of it is this.

If you choose star 1 on this map, this weird moon loads in the star 2 area that you can

never go to.

However upon loading star 2, the moon actually unloads.

So basically the only way to check out this moon at all is to go where Mario isn't supposed

to go.

Which is what I've become really good at.

This moon doesn't have any gravity and is quite small, but it was such a cool experience

when I first stumbled upon it.

Freezy Flake Galaxy's House of Illusion - Super Mario Galaxy 2

This one is pretty neat since you normally can't see this through the standard camera,

but upon starting Freezy Flake Galaxy there is a small house with a rabbit inside of it.

Normally you can see this rabbit through the window, but the truth is, the window doesn't

actually exist all the way through the house.

If you were to look from inside the house yourself, you'd see that the windows are

only outward facing.

It's a one way illusion and it's pretty strange.

The Glitched Caterpillar of Gusty Garden Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy 2

Now this one is a bit complex, but in Gusty Garden Galaxy there is a series of three apples

that a caterpillar eats through.

Now the game normally has this creature go from apple to apple in a set order, but we

have the ability to mess up the game if we do it out of order.

Basically each apple has a stump which makes the caterpillar shoot out of it, however,

hitting a stump on an apple you're not supposed to be on yet still triggers the caterpillar

to move from the apple it is currently in.

What the game doesn't account for is the extra distance that the caterpillar normally

travels, because the gaps between each apple are actually different sizes.

This forces the caterpillar to essentially break apart and glitch out… it's truly

bizarre.

There's a lot of different combinations and effects that can happen.

I made a video highlighting all the outcomes on my other channel and it's definitely

worth a watch.

The Unreachable Block House in Super Mario Galaxy 2

Probably one of the most memorable starting areas out of any level in the game…

Rightside Down Galaxy's starting area features a fairly large block house that we fly into

upon loading the stage.

Of course, we're whisked away and we never got back here.

No chance to explore and see what it has to offer.

The funny thing is, even if we were to make it back to this house, we actually can't

walk on it.

Mario falls right through it and tumbles to his death!

It's pretty bizarre because the Toad ships around it have collision, but this place does

not…

Except for the pipe at the top.

But we can't stand on that since it'll spit us back into the level.

So this whole block house is essentially fake.

The Invisible Box at Bowser Jr's Airship Armada - Super Mario Galaxy 1

At Bowser Jr's Airship armada, there's a lot of areas that we can't actually get

to.

Tons of battleships litter the skies, and trying to reach any of them through normal

means usually kills Mario or Luigi.

However, one of the most interesting things about this level aren't actually the ships

around the area.

It's what we can't see which is truly bizarre.

And the end of the level is an enormous invisible box just off the side of the last ship.

It's several hundred feet tall and wide, and it continually forces Mario or Luigi outwards.

This means you could technically sit upon the box and never fall down despite there

being no floor, because you get forced upwards to counteract gravity's pull and it suspends

you in the air.

It's a really bizarre occurrence.

The Mirror World Below the Star Festival - Super Mario Galaxy 1

I absolutely love the Star Festival in Super Mario Galaxy!

It's honestly one of the most beautiful levels in the game, and that's saying a

lot because lots of the environments are spectacular.

What's really neat about this area though is that it is sort of similar to the duplicate

castle I mentioned before from Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Except this time, the castle is mirrored below the floor of the level so that it looks like

it is reflected in the water.

This is a trick that a lot of games do, and I recently made a video about this concept.

In it I show you how to explore mirror worlds, worlds within reflections, without actually

dying - because often times they just instantly kill you if you travel to them.

Regardless, this aspect of the Star Festival was always super cool to me, and I always

wanted to swim in that pool of water.

Tall Trunk Galaxy's Hidden Canopy Area - Super Mario Galaxy 2

Tall Trunk Galaxy boasts one of the biggest trees in the game, and of course, when I sat

under it I always wanted to explore it in its entirety.

The issue with this is that we can't actually explore the tree because it stems out so far

from the small planet it grows out of.

Beyond that, Yoshi's blimp fruit only goes so high, so we can't actually get near the

top of the tree.

However, what's interesting is that at the top of this tree is actually a hidden canopy

area that Mario can explore.

It's like a tree fort completely hidden in the leaves, and there is normally no way

he can access this area without cheating.

Kind of a weird but neat discovery that's sat at the top of this tree for years never

being documented…

Worm Hole Travel

Now this one…

This is my favorite.

You see, obviously with a game based around traveling through space, one would generally

be interested in what else is out there.

Much like our own world, the properties and mechanics that make up Mario's universe

have tons of quirks and weird oddities as showcased in this video.

However, out of all the discoveries I've made exploring countless galaxies, discovering

how to travel via a generated wormhole is by far the most interesting.

Essentially this grants Mario the ability to travel instantaneously across a galaxy

thousands and thousands of feet.

It's a freak phenomenon that can occur when conditions line up just right, but for this

final discovery I'll actually be making a full fledged video documenting the process

behind it.

It's a tad complex and cannot be utilized for speedruns, but it's still pretty awesome.

Popular Christmas Myths That Are Totally False - Duration: 6:28.

Admitting that a lot of the things we know about Christmas

are wrong, doesn't diminish the deep significance the day

has for millions of people around the world.

Sometimes it's fun to look at the gears inside the magic

so we can better appreciate how our belief systems have

evolved.

Jesus' birthday is the reason for the season.

So how could that date possibly be wrong?

Well, there's no record of the actual birthday

in scripture or historical texts.

In the third century C.E., the Roman scholar, Hippolytus,

came to the conclusion that Jesus

was conceived on the spring equinox, which

would put Christ's birthday close to the 25th of December.

We celebrate Christmas in December

because several cultures celebrated the winter solstice

on, or around the 25th.

Converting pagans to Christianity

was easier if their holy days were

reinvented, rather than erased.

For the record, modern scholars believe

Jesus was born in late September.

Evergreen trees were used in pagan rituals

before becoming a symbol of Christmas.

It's unclear how trees went from there to the German Protestants

in the 16th century.

It may have been inspired by Martin Luther looking up

at the stars.

Or a combination of two pre-existing German traditions,

the paradise tree and the Christmas light.

In 1846, a sketch of Queen Victoria

and her German husband, Prince Albert,

appeared for the Illustrated London News.

The Royals stood in front of an evergreen Christmas tree,

and that sketch started the trend.

Considering the popularity of the holiday,

many people assume that Christmas is the most important

day in the Christian faith.

That distinction actually goes to Easter.

Believers celebrated Easter almost immediately.

Christmas was added to the calendar hundreds of years

later.

The current belief that there is a secular war against Christmas

isn't really that new of an idea.

Back in 1959, the ultraconservative John Birch

Society believed that Jews were launching

a war on Christianity.

Part of their defense strategy was the publication

of a pamphlet titled, There Goes Christmas,

which proved how communists were working with the U.N.

To kill the holiday.

In reality, few modern retailers actually

avoid the word Christmas.

Writing Christmas as Xmas was not

meant to be derogatory to Christians.

The term has deep roots in the faith.

That wasn't non-Christian but Christians

who started the practice.

It began with the writers of the New Testament.

The second half of the Bible was written in coin Greek

where the first letter in Christ's name is x.

To save room on the page, his name

was frequently shortened to the single letter.

Like Puff Daddy, a.k.a.

P. Diddy, a.k.a.

Brother Love, Santa Claus in red hasn't always

gone by Santa, Saint Nick, or Kris Kringle.

It all started with Nicholas the fourth century Turkish bishop,

who devoted himself to helping the poor with such acts

as hiding money in people's stockings as they slept.

After his death he was sainted Saint Nicholas or Saint Nick.

Father Christmas started in England

as an embodiment of the winter solstice.

He stopped being a symbol of drinking and revelry,

and became a gift giver in the Victorian era.

The Dutch called St. Nicholas Sinterklaas,

which was translated into Santa Claus.

When Santa made his way to the UK

in the 1850's, he and Father Christmas became synonymous.

German and Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania

folded the German gift giving Christkind,

whom they called Kris Kringle, into the idea of Santa Claus.

He eventually became Kris Kringle in part

because a kringle was a popular Dutch holiday

pastry of the day.

In the 6th century, when Dionysus Exiguus

reworked the Julian calendar, he came up

with the idea of dividing the timeline into pre-Jesus

and post-Jesus.

But at that time, zero wasn't a concept

that had reached Western civilization.

That wouldn't happen until around the 12th century.

As far as the person who created B.C. and A.D.

was concerned, not only was there no year zero,

there was no zero.

So when was Christ actually born?

Extrapolating from biblical references

and historical documents, scholars

would place his birth between 6 and 2 B.C.

Everyone knows about the royal eastern kings

who visited baby Jesus in the manger, Caspar, Melchior,

and Balthazar, Unfortunately, even according to the Bible,

they weren't kings.

The gospels tell us they were magi, also

referred to as wise men.

What's more, they visited Jesus and his mom

while he was a child, not as an infant.

Even the names we call them are wrong.

Those were just popular monikers added to the legend in Italy

in the 6th century.

Christmas tree fires are such a big problem

that city fire departments regularly demonstrate the risk

to the public.

That is if you consider roughly 230 fires per year

out of millions of trees to be a big risk.

What actually is a concern is that Christmas tree fires

tend to be more deadly.

1 in 18 tree fires results in a death, while only 1

in 134 regular home fires proves fatal.

But trees are a safety risk.

Over 5,800 people go to the ER each year

from accidents resulting from decorating Christmas trees.

The legend that Christmas was once banned in America is true,

but not the way you would think.

In 1659, Puritans banned Christmas in Massachusetts.

They did it in an attempt to distance themselves

from the practices of the Church of England.

The ban lasted for 22 years.

In fact, it wasn't until the 1800's that Boston really

jumped onto the Christmas bandwagon.

The rumor that the White House no longer has a Christmas tree

is false.

It wasn't true when the rumor was started during the Obama

administration in 2009, and it isn't true now.

Some confusion arose from the fact

that the capital Christmas tree decorating program

focuses on the beauty of the states represented

by the ornaments rather than on anything

religious or political.

But that isn't the tree that goes up in the White House.

That impressive specimen is very proudly

called a Christmas tree.

The coca-cola company has used the image of Santa Claus

so effectively in their holiday ad campaigns

that many people think that they created the jolly old fellow.

In an effort to increase sales during the depression,

Coke began showing Santa drinking an icy cold Coke

instead of a glass of milk during a time of the year

that few people associate with frosty beverages.

The coca-cola centric depiction didn't find its way

into the public until 1931, over a century after Santa

donned his red suit.

2018 Breakthrough of the Year - Duration: 5:44.

Every year, reporters and editors at Science choose

nine runners up and one breakthrough of the year--

they look for the most significant scientific discoveries,

developments and trends.

But before we get to the breakthrough,

here are the runners up

In a detector beneath the South Pole, a ghostly particle

called a neutrino left a telltale track

researchers traced it back to its likely source:

a bright galaxy called a blazar, far away.

The finding suggests blazars may also be the source of

mysterious ultra–high-energy cosmic rays.

Deep beneath the Greenland ice sheet,

scientists have discovered a massive crater,

it was created by the impact

of a mountain sized asteroid

The impact is relatively recent

and hasn't yet been firmly dated,

but the event may help explain some

puzzling climate changes.

This ancient fossil is more than

half a billion years old.

But was it an animal?

An intriguing find suggest it was.

Scientists discovered traces of cholesterol,

a signature of animal life, associated with these fossils

The feat indicates the fossils,

which belong to a mysterious class called Ediacara

were some of Earth's earliest animals

The first drug based on a gene-silencing reaction

called RNA interference (RNAi),

won approval this year for

use in the United States and Europe.

Researchers discovered RNAi,

which blocks messenger RNA, 20 years ago

The drug, which targets a rare hereditary disease,

could be the first of many.

Until recently, sexual harassment in science

has been underreported and largely ignored

But 2018 brought signs of change.

Several institutions upheld allegations against

prominent scientists accused of sexual harassment,

discrimination, and bullying,

and the U.S. National Academies of Science

issued a report calling for

systemic changes to prevent such abuse.

This year saw increasing evidence that cellular

components condense into tiny droplets--

a process called phase separation.

The droplets can perform critical functions.

Researchers have found they play an unexpected role

in the transcription of genes,

And they identified a possible path

to dissolving solidified droplets

that clog the brain

and contribute to diseases such as

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

From a cave in Siberia, researchers recovered

DNA contained in a bone fragment

of a woman who lived more than 50,000 years ago

Analysis indicated her mother was a Neanderthal

and her father a Denisovan,

a mysterious group of archaic humans.

The finding is the most direct evidence yet that

genetically distinct types of ancient humans interbred.

Police detectives have used a new tool

forensic geneaology

to crack about 20 cold cases, including crimes

committed by the suspected Golden State Killer

The criminals left DNA at the crime scenes

The detectives searched through

a public DNA database

to identify people who had similar DNA

and were likely to be related to the criminals

Researchers have developed a technique based

on electron microscopy that allows them

that allows them to determine the precise shape

of small organic molecules

The new approach is simple, fast,

and works on tiny samples.

It is likely to help speed up drug discovery.

And now, for the breakthrough of the year:

From at least the time of Hippocrates, biologists

have been transfixed by a mystery --

how does a single cell develop

into an adult animal

with multiple organs and billions of cells.

Now a combination of technologies

is allowing scientists to track the development

of organisms and organs in stunning detail

cell by cell, through time.

They can see when genes in individual cells switch on,

cueing the cells to play their specialized parts.

The techniques are like having the sheet music

used by an orchestra

that indicates when the strings, the brass,

percussion, and woodwinds should

chime in to create a symphony

These groundbreaking studies have already

mapped cell fates in organisms from zebrafish to mice,

and more is sure to come.

Science is recognizing this combination

of technologies, and its potential for spurring advances

in basic research and medicine,

as the 2018 Breakthrough of the Year.

'Mary Poppins Returns' topped the Wednesday box office as the sequel to the beloved

1964 Disney classic opened in 4,090 theaters.

The Rob Marshall directed family film didn't break any records with it's $4.8 million haul,

but is expected to enjoy huge earnings throughout the year-end holidays as families

and general moviegoers flock to the cinema in their time off. 'Mary Poppins Returns,'

which scooped an A- CinemaScore from audiences, came in notably ahead of the

$2.5 million earned by fellow musical 'The Greatest Showman' last year on the Wednesday

before Christmas, but behind the $7.2 million grossed by 'Jumanji: Welcome to the

Jungle,' which opened opposite 'Showman.' Tracking suggests 'Mary Poppins Returns'

will gross roughly $55 million for the Wednesday-Sunday stretch, and upwards of

$70 million between Wednesday and Christmas Day. 'Mary Poppins Returns' stars

Emily Blunt as the magical nanny who appears two decades after the events of the 1964

movie, to once again care for the Banks children - who are now adults - and their kids.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw and Angela Lansbury also star

and Dick Van Dyke - who starred opposite Julie Andrews in the original - makes a cameo

in the modern day offering. Meanwhile, two other highly anticipated films burst into

cinemas Friday - Warner Bros.' 'Aquaman' — which has already grossed north of

$300 million overseas and is projected to pull in domestic debut north of $110 million —

and Paramount's 'Transformers' spinoff 'Bumblebee.'

Mimo, że w serialowej rzeczywistości "M jak miłość" do Bożego Narodzenia jeszcze daleko

to na planie już powstały magiczne, świąteczne zdjęcia.

Wszystko dlatego, że odcinki są kręcone z nawet czteromiesięcznym wyprzedzeniem.

To oznacza, że aktorzy właśnie nagrywają sceny świąt, a w telewizji widzowie oglądają lato.

To już pewne, że w nowych odcinkach "M jak miłość" Iza i Marcin wrócą do siebie.

Ostatnio Adriana Kalska i Mikołaj Roznerski mówili o tym w wywiadzie dla "Tele Tygodnia".

Wspomnieli nawet, że ich bohaterowie zamieszkają razem i postanowią wreszcie być rodziną.

Co będzie dalej? Świąteczne zdjęcia z planu "M jak miłość" wskazują

że przed zakochanymi i ich dziećmi pierwsze wspólne Boże Narodzenie.

Tym bardziej cudowne, że nareszcie w pełnym składzie.

Nie zabraknie nawet Aleksandry (Małgorzata Pieczyńska) i Olka

12 Likely Symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome.

Following a concussion (also known as a mild traumatic brain injury), many people experience

lasting symptoms in what is often referred to as "post-concussion syndrome."

However, the symptoms themselves can manifest in different ways for different patients,

which makes post-concussion syndrome particularly difficult to diagnose.

Below we list some of the most common physical, cognitive and emotional issues you should

watch out for if you recently experienced a head injury.

-Headaches and Migraines.

-Dizziness and Vertigo.

-Fatigue.

-Sensitivity to Light.

-Blurred Vision.

-Noise Sensitivity.

-Difficulty Concentrating.

-Memory Loss.

-Slow / Delayed Thinking.

-Anxiety.

-Depression.

-Sleep Disturbances.

Physical Symptoms.

Headaches and Migraines.

Headaches and migraines rank as one of the most common complaints of post-concussion

syndrome, affecting as many as 90% of patients at all stages of the condition.

Unfortunately, these headaches can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months to over 1 year, and you

are more likely to experience chronic headache issues if you or your family have a prior

history of headache or migraine disorders and/or if you have experienced multiple head

injuries previously.

Dizziness and Vertigo.

The first few days after a head injury is where a majority of people deal with post-concussion

dizziness, however it can become a chronic problem for some—lasting up to five years

or more.

Dizziness and vertigo may also be accompanied by feelings of faintness, lightheadedness,

nausea and/or vomiting.

Fatigue.

More than 90% of patients report moderate to severe fatigue following a concussion,

and it can linger even when most other symptoms have subsided.

Although there is plenty of debate surrounding how much exertion should take place for a

person with post-concussion syndrome, it is still recommended to get plenty of rest—particularly

in the early days after the injury.

Sensitivity to Light.

Persistent light sensitivity is another frequent side effect that can be a hallmark of post-concussion

syndrome, although it may be underreported in medical studies.

Like many other symptoms described here, this sensitivity to light can last beyond the initial

recovery period of a concussion.

Additionally, many patients report that their post-concussion symptoms are triggered by

certain light, such as fluorescents or digital screens.

Blurred Vision.

Blurred vision represents a common visual symptom after a head injury, with nearly half

of non-recovered post-concussion patients citing it as a disruption.

Fuzziness in the visual field may be physiological in nature, due to injury sustained by the

brain and how it affects the eyes, or it may even represent a neurological complication

of the TBI or concussion (e.g. caused by vestibular migraine).

Noise Sensitivity.

Sometimes even the quietest sounds can be painful for a person with post-concussion

syndrome.

In fact, research has shown that approximately 40% of head injuries have enduring noise sensitivity

as a follow-on symptom, and often it presents with other sensory issues such as photophobia

and light intolerance.

Cognitive Symptoms.

Difficulty Concentrating.

If you are dealing with ongoing post-concussion symptoms, it is very likely that you will

also experience disruption in your ability to concentrate.

In fact, it is perhaps the most common non-physical symptom related to concussions and head injuries.

Difficulty concentrating may stem from neck pain, visual changes, changes in nerve structure,

as well as psychological symptoms like anxiety, and noise/visual sensitivities.

Memory Loss.

Post-concussion syndrome can unfortunately lead to memory loss or brain fog for perhaps

as many as three out of four individuals who live with the condition.

This might be set off by any brain bruising associated with the offending injury or simply

related to other symptoms like poor concentration, migraine and/or fatigue.

Delayed/Slowed Thinking.

As with concentration difficulties, thinking problems are a common feature of head injuries,

and they are often associated with delayed ability to respond and attention deficits.

These symptoms are most frequently reported within the first 3 months after a concussion,

and longer-term cognitive problems are likely due to an underlying prevalence of emotional

symptoms, specifically depression.

Emotional Symptoms.

Anxiety.

Anxiety is sadly a regular feature of chronic and invisible illness, including post-concussion

syndrome, and it can be especially high if an individual also experiences sensory issues

such as light or sound sensitivity.

What is even worse is that anxiousness after a concussion can lead to a negative cycle

of behavior for patients, such as having reduced hope about their prospects of recovery.

Depression.

Depression often accompanies anxiety and other emotional problems following a concussive

injury.

In fact, nearly 50% report depression within the first year following an injury.

And it can be hard to shake, lasting for several years after the initial concussion.

This can prolong recovery time and also lead to worsening outcomes and symptoms.

It is imperative to discuss any emotional side effects with a medical professional in

order to help reduce the negative impact on your recovery and life.

Sleep Disturbances.

Sleep disturbances may affect 40% to 75% of patients following their injury and may be

manifested in symptoms of insomnia and other sleep challenges.

Other sleep disorders may be present in those with a mild traumatic brain injury as well,

such as hypersomnia, periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), narcolepsy, sleep walking,

sleep terrors, REM sleep disorders and more.

10 Apps I Use For Cruises - Duration: 7:35.

Hey cruisers we're gearing up for our first-ever overseas cruise and wanted to

share the top 10 apps we're using to prepare for our cruise and that we plan

to use once onboard I'd like to start by mentioning that this list changes from

cruise to cruise which is probably pretty obvious we'd love to hear what

apps you find valuable when you cruise so leave your favorites in the comments

below as for us we're headed to Asia for a 10 night journey from Tokyo to

Singapore so our apps are sort of a reflection of this particular cruise

where language and currency differences are pretty serious considerations for us

you'll see what I mean as we jump into the list number one on the list is good

old Google Maps what we like about this app the most is that it shows transit

routes and options so if you plug in where you want to go you'll get not only

route maps but lists of different transit methods to get there like bus or

train options the other thing that we like about this app is that in some

areas you can download a city map for offline use unfortunately you can't do

this with all cities but we still find a lot of value in it lastly the app easily

allows you to explore nearby restaurants and attractions super convenient if you

need to figure out where to eat quickly in a foreign place our number 2 must use

app is Google Photos we use several methods for syncing and backing up

photos from our phones like iCloud for example but I've become very fond of the

hands-free ease of use in the Google Photos app you can set it up to

automatically upload your photos frequently and the only downside is

you'll need a Wi-Fi connection for this to work not always the case on a

shipwright we feel like Google photos just gives us another level of assurance

that our photos are being backed up and of course it's super handy having access

to your photos at all times in Google Drive when you get home number 3 on the

list is Amazon music everyone has their favorite music streaming apps so you

works for you in this category for me being able to download unlimited music

using my Amazon Prime membership for offline use is making this app a

favorite for me right now now considering we have some very

long-haul flights in our future I want to know that I can play some tunes well

my phone is in airplane mode both on the flight and on the cruise be sure to tell

us how you listen to music on a cruise or a flight in the comments section

number four airline apps are such a wonderful convenience for our next

cruise I am using the American Airlines app to store my upcoming trip I can

check my flight status check in online change seeds and track my checked bags

using the app I can even find out what entertainment and movies are playing in

my seat back on the flight don't tell my son he'll be so excited to

check that out number five cruise line apps are also something I use every time

I cruise in this case I'll be using the princess at sea app Princess' free

mobile friendly app the app offers a messenger feature on some ships so you

can send text messages to others on board it also allows you to plan your

day's activities review the ship itinerary browse restaurant menus and

keep tabs on your stateroom account that's my favorite part

and this next app is a brand new one for me currency app is number 6 on our list

because we'll be visiting five countries with five different currencies on our

next cruise and there's no way I'm going to memorize every currency in such a

short time now I chose this particular app because it's painfully simple to use

you just add your currencies click on one add the dollar amount click convert

and you're done that amount you entered will be converted into any currency

you've set with minimal clicks I love minimal clicks all right number seven is

a tried-and-true friend of the cruisetipstv community good old shipmate

up we use shipmate to do lots but it's particularly handy for planning and

getting excited for your cruise from setting a countdown timer to reading

reviews and checking out photos of people who've

recently cruised on the ship you'll be on shipmate app is an app we use daily

right before a cruise you can also download your itinerary for offline use

on your cruise just make sure you connect to Wi-Fi before you do that we

also used ship mate app to book two excursions on our next cruise and you

can browse and book them right inside the app once you book them they show up

in the app under booked excursions when you select the profile tab number eight

is a clever little app my husband found to solve a common problem we have on

vacations it's called video to photo and it does exactly what it sounds like it

will it allows you to isolate still photos out of video which is super handy

for those moments when you captured something on video but you're kicking

yourself because you didn't grab a still picture it takes a bit of patience to

find the perfect frame to create your still from but this puppy has been a

lifesaver on many occasions for us number nine is

an app I use in my daily life for social media posts but it also comes in handy

on a cruise it's called spark post and it's an Adobe app that allows you to

quickly create visually appealing posts using a combination of images and text

or text and backgrounds you can select from tons of free stock photos if you

need them and even borrow ideas from the templates they feature on the app there

are lots of fonts to choose from and it's super friendly trust me I am NOT

techy and I've gotten a ton of use out of this app we could spend hours talking

about the features but the key is you can customize in just about any way

imaginable and the app even walks you through what size you need for each

image in simple terms for example there's no need to know what size image

will look best on Instagram the app just lets you select Instagram post then

focus on the fun and creative side of your social posts number 10 may just be

the app I'm most grateful to have access to yes

Google Translate is an excellent lifeline

traveling to foreign countries it allows you to quickly speak or type a phrase

into your phone and receive both a text and voice translation kind of like this

Hi there, my name is Sylvester Alexander and today I want to talk about AIDS,

because December is AIDS Awareness Month. I just want to apologize for the fact

that I'm wearing a hat, I know that some people might find it disrespectful that

I'm wearing a hat for such a heavy topic and a heavy video, but my hair is at a

very crazy stage of growth right now and I just don't want my hair to distract

from this very important topic. So some of the basics: AIDS or Acquired

Immunodeficiency Syndrome is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV. HIV or

Human Immunodeficiency Virus alters the immune system making people much more

vulnerable to infections and diseases. AIDS may or may not appear in the

advanced stages of HIV. Some people can go their entire lives with HIV and never

develop AIDS, oftentimes with the help of medication. Anti-Retroviral Therapy or

ART is a drug therapy that can slow or prevent the development of the virus. HIV

is spread through contact with bodily fluids and also can be spread from

mother to child. Now, these are the most recent statistics available and they are

from the year 2017. An estimated thirty six point nine million people globally

were living with HIV, including up to 2.4 million children under 15 years old.

1.7 million people were accessing ART, approximately 59% of people living with

HIV were accessing AR T with almost 95% of pregnant women accessing treatment

1.8 million people were newly affected that year six hundred and seventy

thousand to 1.3 million people died of aids-related illness about nine point

four million people globally were found to not know that they were HIV positive

21 point three billion dollars u.s. was available for AIDS response in low and

middle income countries at the end of the year since the beginning of the

epidemic up to 100 million people have become infected with HIV and up to forty

nine point nine million people have died from aids-related illnesses

new HIV infections have been reduced by 47% since the peak of the epidemic in

1996 with the number of new infections going from approximately 3.4 million in

1996 to approximately 1.8 million in 2017 new infections among adults has

decreased 16 percent since 2010 and 35 percent among children in 2004 around

1.9 million people died of aids-related illness while in 2017 the number has

declined by 51 percent young women aged 15 to 24 years old are twice as likely

to become infected with HIV than men largely due to high rates of sexual

assaults against women all around the world in some regions rape victims could

be one and a half times more likely to contract HIV from their attacker 95

percent of new HIV infections occur in Eastern Europe Central Asia the Middle

East and North Africa people who inject illegal drugs are 23 times more likely

to become infected with HIV one in three people living with AIDS die from

tuberculosis it's estimated that 49 percent of people

living with HIV and tuberculosis are undiagnosed and unaware of the

co-infection natives are significantly more at risk in Canada than other

populations partly due to high rates of rape committed against indigenous people

an estimated twenty six point two billion dollars u.s. will be required

for the AIDS response in 2020 according to UN estimates to end off this video I

of the old planet we're testing positive to the HIV virus effectively relegates

homosexuality and intravenous drug use it is simply an opportunistic virus that

does what it has to to stay alive and Ann Northrop said I

think racism is a bottom-line AIDS issue and I think homophobia is a bottom line

AIDS issue and sexism and classes and all of this I think that we are not

going to solve the AIDS epidemic unless we deal with these issues and vice versa

And then separate the parts of the lineart by numbers

Once you got all the parts chosen

We use a random color generator

and we click on spin

This website will generate 3 colors at a time

and the order the colors appear is gonna be the order from our lineart

I have to say that in the other videos I've watched

usually there is just one character with not that many details

but it got a bit out of hand and I ended up with my 3 oc's

singing christmas songs in a karaoke

By the way, I think I've never introduced them here

These are my oc's Tobias, Sky and Mid

I have had them for some years now

but I draw them less that I'd like

Even tho I have to admit I use them a lot for class

About the challenge

I get lots of blues, lots

and the two reds end up one next to the other

but in the end that's the fun of this challenge

Once all the base colors are there

I start with shading and illuminating

and I didn't know if shading with another color was cheating or not

so I decided to shade and illuminate with the same color

but I just changed the luminosity and the saturation

The result is not what I'd ever do

but I have to accept I really like Tobias skintone color

The challenge has been lots of fun
