>> Adrienne: ON THIS MONDAY
NIGHT -- AID ARRIVES IN
INDONESIA.
RECOVERY EFFORTS ARE UNDER WAY.
WHY ARE THERE WARNINGS THAT
DANGER STILL LURKS?
>>> MARKET MELTDOWN.
U.S. STOCKS ARE ON TRACK FOR THE
WORST DECEMBER SINCE THE GREAT
DEPRESSION.
PRESIDENT TRUMP IS PLAYING THE
BLAME GAME.
IS HE RIGHT TO SAY IT'S NOT HIS
FAULT?
[SPEAKING CHINESE]
>>> AND THIS IS GETTING WORSE --
CHINA RESPONDS TO CRITICISM
ABOUT HOLDING TWO CANADIANS.
WHERE DOES THIS STANDOFF HEAD
NEXT?
THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."
>> Adrienne: TWO DAYS AFTER A
TSUNAMI CRASHED ON TO THE SHORES
OF INDONESIA, THE NUMBER OF DEAD
HAVE CLIMBED TO AT LEAST 373,
NUMBER OF INJURED, 1,400.
SOLDIERS AND VOLUNTEERS ARE
COMBING BEACHES AND WRECKED
BUILDINGS LOOKING FOR SURVIVORS,
BUT MOSTLY FINDING MORE BODIES.
THESE WOMEN CAREFULLY GATHERING
RICE THAT WAS SCATTERED WHEN
THEIR HOMES WERE DESTROYED.
THINGS ARE DESPERATE AND THEY
COULD GET WORSE.
THE TSUNAMI WAS CAUSED BY
VOLCANIC ACTIVITY AND THERE ARE
FEARS THAT IT COULD HAPPEN
AGAIN.
CHRIS O'NEILL-YATES CHASES DOWN

COMING BACK, BUT I HAD TO TO
TAKE WHAT I CAN.
I CAN'T GET THE IMAGE OF HUGE
WAVES OUT OF MY HEAD.
>> Reporter: INDONESIAN
PRESIDENT JOKO WIDODO VISITED
THE WORST AFFECTED AREA ON THE
WEST COAST OF JAVA.
IN FUTURE, METEOROLOGY AND
CLIMATOLOGY WILL PROVIDE
DETECTION EQUIPMENT THAT WILL
GIVE A WARNING, HE SAYS.
IN THIS CASE, THERE WAS NO
EARTHQUAKE, NO TREMBLING GROUND
AS WARNING.
THERE ARE SYSTEMS THAT CAN ALERT
PEOPLE TO UNUSUAL WAVES.
>> THE PROBLEM WE HAVE, IT WILL
NOT GIVE PEOPLE THAT MUCH OF A
WARNING.
IN THAT SITUATION, EVEN 10
SECONDS MAY GET SOME PEOPLE TO
HIGHER GROUND AND REDUCE THE
FATALITIES.
>> Reporter: IN TSUNAMI-PRONE
INDONESIA, WARNINGS ALONE WON'T
SAVE LIVES, SAID HIS CANADIAN
DISASTER RELIEF SPECIALIST.
>> THERE HAS TO BE A DETERMINED
EFFORT TO MOVE HEAVILY POPULATED
AREAS, IF POSSIBLE, AWAY FROM
THE WATERFRONT, FROM THE OCEAN.
BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE MOST OF
THIS DESTRUCTION HAPPENED.
>> Reporter: INDONESIAN
OFFICIALS SAY THE DANGER HAS NOT
PASSED.
THE ANAK KRAKATAU IS STILL
ERUPTING AND COULD POSSIBLY
TRIGGER ANOTHER TSUNAMI.
IN THE COMING DAYS, THEY'RE
TELLING PEOPLE TO STAY AWAY FROM
COASTAL AREAS.
CHRIS O'NEILL-YATES, CBC NEWS,

THIS FORMER CANADIAN DIPLOMAT
SAYS THE NEXT STEP.
IS TO CALL THE CHINESE
PRESIDENT.
>> HE WILL HAVE TO SAY, WE
DEMAND YOU RELEASE THESE TWO
GENTLEMEN IMMEDIATELY AND THEN
THERE'S NEEDS TO BE AN OR ELSE.
>> Reporter: IF THAT DOESN'T
WORK, CANADA CAN WITHDRAW ITS
AMBASSADOR FROM BEIJING BACK TO
OTTAWA IN PROTEST OR EVEN PUT
SANCTIONS ON CHINESE DIPLOMATS
IN CANADA.
>> ALL OF THESE ACTIONS WOULD
LEAD TO A SEVERE DETERIORATION
OF RELATIONS BETWEEN CANADA AND
CHINA.
>> Reporter: IT'S A DELICATE

OFFICIALS SAY THEY WILL WORK
OVER THE HOLIDAYS TO TRY TO
RESOLVE.
OLIVIA STEFANOVICH, CBC NEWS,

A BRITISH COUPLE QUESTIONED AND
RELEASED IN THE COURSE OF THE

VIOLATED.
THEY INSIST THAT THE MEDIA OUTED
AND VILIFIED THEM.
AS BRIAR STEWART REPORTS,
THEY'RE FIGHTING BACK.
>> WE ARE DISTRESSED.

SEVERAL MEDIA OUTLETS IDENTIFIED
THE COUPLE.
THEIR NAMES AND PICTURES ON
THE FRONT OF THE PAPERS.
"ARE THESE THE MORONS THAT
RUINED CHRISTMAS?"
EVIDENTLY NOT, BECAUSE AFTER
BEING ARRESTED BY POLICE ON
FRIDAY, THEY WERE RELEASED
YESTERDAY WITHOUT CHARGES.
>> THE WAY WE WERE PERCEIVED IS
DISGUSTING.
THOSE THAT KNEW US DIDN'T DOUBT
US FOR A SECOND.

AND THAT CHANGE THE THE LAW SO
WE HAVE SECRET ARRESTS AND YOU
CAN BE ARRESTED, BUT YOUR NAME
IS NOT RELEASED FOR THE PUBLIC
AND MAY NOT BE PUBLISHED.
IT'S A BREACH OF PRIVACY.
>> Reporter: THERE'S NO DOUBT
THAT THE COUPLE'S NAMES AND
IMAGES HAVE BEEN SEEN AROUND THE
WORLD.
THIS JOURNALIST SAID IF THERE'S
A BLANKET BAN ON IDENTIFYING
PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED,
IT HURTS THE FREEDOM OF THE

>> IT CAN BE VERY PROBLEMATIC.
WE SHOULD ALWAYS BE IN CERTAIN
SITUATIONS ABLE TO SAY, THE

THEY'RE HOLDING THEM.
WHAT'S GOING ON?
>> THIS COUPLE FEELS THEIR LIVES

TWEETED FROM THE INTERNATIONAL
SPACE STATION THAT I TOOK ON AN
EXTRA JOB -- HELPING NORAD TRACK
SANTA.
ACCORDING TO HIS NEW LABOUR
CONTRACT, HE HAS THE DAY OFF
TOMORROW FOR THE HOLIDAY.
CATHERINE CULLEN HAD A GOOD
QUESTION ABOUT THAT -- HOW DO
YOU SPEND DOWNTIME WHEN YOU'RE
WAY UP THERE?

ASTRONAUT LABOUR CONTRACT.
ASTRONAUTS ARE ENTITLED TO 11
STATUTORY HOLIDAYS.
IN SPACE, THERE ARE DAYS OFF.
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH YOUR
DOWNTIME IN CRAMPED QUARTERS
LIKE THIS?
AS CHRIS HADFIELD DEMONSTRATED,
YOU COULD PERHAPS TAKE A NAP.
MAYBE HAVE A SNACK.
>> PRETTY GOOD.
>> Reporter: EVEN WORK ON YOUR
PERSONAL HYGIENE.
>> THAT ONE GOT AWAY.
(*)
PERFECT.
>> DOES THE I.S.F. EVEN HAVE A
NETFLIX ACCOUNT?
ACCORDING TO JULIE PYATT, IT'S
NOT SO DIFFERENT.
>> WHEN YOU HAVE TIME, YOU CAN
READ A BOOK, YOU CAN WATCH A
MOVIE ON THE COMPUTER.
YOU CAN WATCH A PROGRAMME
UPLINKED FROM THE GROUND, BUT
MOST OF US, JUST LOOK OUT THE
WINDOW AT THE MAGNIFICENT
SPECTACLE WE HAVE, PLANET EARTH.
WE TAKE PICTURES AND HAVE
MEMORIES FOR A LIFETIME.
>> Reporter: SAINT-JACQUES WILL
HAVE CHRISTMAS DAY OFF AND
THEY'VE BEEN KNOWN TO CELEBRATE.
* I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
>> Reporter: THOUGH ON BOXING
DAY, IT'S BACK TO WORK.
ALSO IN THE NEW LABOUR DEAL, UP
TO $3,000 IN CASE YOU SUDDENLY

DIGNITARY.
$6,500 IN RELOCATION ALLOWANCE,
BUT MOVING TWO OUTER SPACE IS
NOT ELIGIBLE.
AND IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING,
ASTRONAUTS ON THE SPACE STATION

(*)
>> Adrienne: HERE'S SOME OTHER
STORIES WE'RE FOLLOWING TONIGHT,
BEGINNING WITH THE LATEST ON THE
POWER OUTAGE IN B.C., FIVE DAYS
AFTER THAT MASSIVE WINDSTORM.
>> THERE IS BASICALLY TREES DOWN
EVERYWHERE AND WIRES ON THE
ROADS.
SO WE'RE NOT HOPEFUL FOR POWER
BACK ON TOMORROW.
THERE WILL BE A LOT OF STUFF
COOKED ON THE WOOD STOVE OR CAMP
STOVE OR BARBECUES.
I THINK THE TURKEY IS GOING TO A
PROPANE OVEN IN THE
NEIGHBOURHOOD.
SO THE DINNER IS GETTING COOKED
IN MANY DIFFERENT PLACES.
IT WILL BE ALL RIGHT.
WE'LL HAVE CANNEDLED GOING.
IT'S GOOD.
>> Adrienne: SHE'S NOT THE
ONLY ONE SPENDING CHRISTMAS IN
THE DARK.
DESPITE 800 PEOPLE WORKING
AROUND THE CLOCK, B.C. HYDRO

ISLAND AND SOUTHERN GULF ISLAND
WILL BE WITHOUT POWER TOMORROW.
>>> IF YOU'RE PLANNING A
CHRISTMAS DINNER, YOU MIGHT BE

29 PEOPLE GOT SICK EATING
TAINTED LETTUCE THIS FALL.
>>> JUST AHEAD, DAVID COMMON
GOES BEHIND SCENES OF "THE
NUTCRACKER."
AN ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SPECTACLE
ALL ABOUT PRECISION AND
DISCIPLINE, AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT
THE AUDIENCE SEES.
>> THE PEOPLE THAT GET WHACKED
BY THE BRANCHES TEND TO BE THE
PERFORMERS IN THE BATTLE.
SO
[APPLAUSE]
>> Adrienne: CHECK OUT THESE TWO
CHARACTERS.
THEY'RE MAPLE LEAFS, GUEST
STARRING AS CANNON DOLLS,
GETTING INTO IT, LIKE THE
AUDIENCE.
"THE NUTCRACKER" IS A BELOVED
HOLIDAY CLASSIC AND EVERY YEAR,
THEY MOUNT THIS SPECTACLE.
MAKE NO MISTAKE, IT'S A BEHEMOTH
OF A SHOW, EVERYTHING WORKING IN
PRECISION OR IT SEEMS LIKE IT TO
US.
ON THIS CHRISTMAS EVE, DAVID
COMMON AGAIN TAKES US BEHIND THE
SCENES OF "THE NUTCRACKER."
(*)
>> Reporter: MAGNIFICENT AS IT
SEEMS, MIDWAY THROUGH THE FIRST
ACT, THERE'S A PROBLEM.
HERE A MOUSTACHE HAS COME
UNGLUED.
AN URGENT FIX FOR A KEY
PERFORMER SECONDS BEFORE HE'S
SET TO RETURN TO THE STAGE.
THE AUDIENCE HAS NO IDEA.
BUT WE HAVE UNPRECEDENTED
ACCESS.
WATCHING AS DANCERS THROW
SNOWBALLS OFFSTAGE.
AS ROLLERBLADING BEARS STAND BY
IN THE WINGS.
THE YOUNGEST PERFORMERS ARE JUST
6 YEARS OLD.
NOW PREPARING FOR THEIR
FIRST-EVER GRAND EVENT.
THIS IS MAKE OR BREAK FOR THE
NATIONAL BALLET, THE ANNUAL
RITUAL THAT HELPS TO PAY FOR THE
REST OF THE YEAR.
IT ATTRACTS HUGE AUDIENCES
EVERY DECEMBER, INCLUDING THIS
ONE.
THE FIRST FULL DRESS REHEARSAL
WITH WHAT WILL BE A FULL HOUSE,
AS THAT AUDIENCE BEGINS TO TAKE
THEIR SEATS, BACKSTAGE, THE SHOW
IS IN ITS FINAL PREPARATIONS.
FOR THE MAN THAT HELPED IT RUN
FOR DECADES, THE STAKES ARE
STILL HIGH.
>> WE'RE ON AN UNFORGIVING PATH.
I CANNOT CHANGE MY MIND AND
LEAVE.
>> Reporter: POINT OF NO RETURN.
>> IT KIND OF IS.
>> Reporter: A MONTH BEFORE SHOW
TIME, THE ENORMOUS EFFORT BEGINS
WITH MASSIVE SETS MOVED OUT OF
STORAGE.
NINE TRAILERS FULL.
>> GREAT.
>> HOW IS IT WHEN YOU PUT YOUR
ARMS UP?
TRY YOUR TIARA.
>> Reporter: MEANWHILE, SUGAR
PLUM FAIRIES ARE FITTED FOR
COSTUMES AND REHEARSALS BEGIN.
[APPLAUSE]
THE NATIONAL BALLET'S OWN MAY BE
EXPERIENCED AT "THE NUTCRACKER."
WITH THE NEED FOR SUCH A LARGE
CAST, MOST OF THE PERFORMERS
COME FROM OUTSIDE THE COMPANY,
MANY OF THEM JUST KIDS.
THEY WILL REHEARSE TOGETHER A
FEWER OF HANDFUL OF TIMES BEFORE
FACING A PAYING AUDIENCE A
GRUELING 26 TIMES.
SHOW TIME IS MOMENTS AWAY.
IT MAY NOT GET THE GLORY, BUT
THE TWO DANCERS STUFFED INSIDE
THIS HORSE CERTAINLY HAVE ONE OF
THE MOST CHALLENGING PARTS.
ONE OF THEM CAN'T SEE.
SO BOTH ARE LED GINGERLY ON TO
THE STAGE.
WHEN THE HORSE'S PART IS
COMPLETE, THE HEAVY COSTUME IS
HUNG, DANCERS SLIP OUT, RUSHING
TO THEIR NEXT ROLE.
WATCH OUT, A BIG MOVE IS ABOUT
TO HAPPEN.
IT TAKES 10 PEOPLE TO MOVE OUT
THIS CHRISTMAS TREE SET.
ON STAGE, THE BRANCHES SWING.
A MOVEMENT FROM BEHIND BY A
STAGEHAND.
ALL THAT SWINGING IS A HAZARD,
ONE DANCERS TRY TO AVOID.
>> THE PEOPLE THAT TEND TO GET
WHACKED BY THE BRANCHES, TEND TO
BE SOME OF THE PERFORMERS IN THE
BATTLE.
AND THERE IS SQUARE STEEL
UNDERNEATH THE DRESSING, SO IT
GIVES A GOOD BARK ON THE SHINS.
>> Reporter: THE PERFORMERS MAY
BE IN PEAK PHYSICAL SHAPE, BUT
"THE NUTCRACKER" IS AN
EXHAUSTING PERFORMANCE.
POISED AND PRECISE, BALLERINAS
ON STAGE STEP OFF BRIEFLY TO
RECOVER AND REHYDRATE.
AS THE END OF THE SNOW SCENE
NEARS, STAGE DIRECTOR JEFF
MORRIS IS STILL CALLING THE
SHOTS.
>> IT'S MAGIC, ABSOLUTELY.
IT'S SO SATISFYING.
WHEN YOU HEAR THE APPLAUSE, YOU
KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE
THAT MAYBE IT'S THEIR FIRST TIME
IN THIS TERRIFIC THEATRE, MAYBE
IT'S THEIR FIRST TIME SEEING A
BALLET, AND THE APPLAUSE IS
FANTASTIC.
(*)
[APPLAUSE]
>> Reporter: APPLAUSE FOR AN ACT
THAT SEEMS SERENE AND PRECISE,
BELYING THE ORGANISED CHAOS.
JUST BEHIND THE PERFORMANCE.
DAVID COMMON, CBC NEWS, TORONTO.
>> Adrienne: ALWAYS A BIT OF
CHAOS BEHIND THE SCENES.
PRINCE HARRY GAVE ROYAL WATCHERS
PLENTY TO CELEBRATE THIS YEAR.
WHEN WE COME BACK, HOW HIS LIFE
HAS BEEN SHAPED GROWING UP IN
THE SHADOW OF DIANA.
>> HE HAS FOUND A WAY TO LOVE
AND BE LOVED OF HAVING HOPE FOR
HIS FUTURE, OF KNOWING THAT HE
HAS HIS RESPONSIBILITIES AND HE
CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
AND THAT HE CAN JUST BE HIMSELF.
>> Adrienne: 2018 HAS BEEN AN
EPIC YEAR FOR PRINCE HARRY AND
BY ALL APPEARANCES FILLED WITH
JOY FROM HIS SPRING WEDDING TO
MEGHAN MARKLE AND HIS TOUR OF
THE SOUTH PACIFIC, TO THE
INVICTUS GAMES.
WHICH HAS BECOME A SYMBOL OF
OPTIMISM FOR WOUNDED VETS.
NOW HE'S AN EXPECTANT FATHER.
FOR MANY, HE WILL BE THE LITTLE
BOY WHOSE MOM DIED WHEN HE WAS
12, A LOSS THAT SHAPED HIS LIFE.
ANYONE THAT KNOWS GRIEF KNOWS TO
MOURN SOMEONE, YOU HAVE TO CARRY
ON WHAT THEY STARTED.
PRINCE HARRY SAID AS DOING JUST
THAT.
HE FOUND THE LIFE HIS OWN, BUT
ALWAYS SHAPED IN THE SHADOW OF
DIANA.
>> 7, 8, 9, 10.
KEEP GOING.
>> Adrienne: WHEN YOU KNOW THAT
YEARS AGO, SOME DECLARED YOUR
LIFE OVER, DEATH MONTHS AWAY,
AND YOU SHOWED THEM YOU COULD
SURVIVE ANYWAY, YOU EARNED A
SMALL AS BROAD AS THIS.
HOW DOES THAT FEEL WHEN YOU DO
THAT?
HERE'S IS A LIFE FILLED WITH
SURPRISES.
SHE LEARNED SHE HAD H.I.V.
THE INFECTION WAS COURSING
THROUGH HER BRAIN.
THE BEST, THAT DOCTORS WOULD
SAVE HER AND SHE WOULD LIVE TO
MAKE A PRINCE OF A FRIEND.
HE'S BEEN BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN
TO SEE THOSE AT THE CLINIC,
THOSE STRUGGLING WITH H.I.V.
>> I THINK IT'S QUITE IMPORTANT
FOR HIM.
>> Reporter: CARRIE HAS BEEN BY
HIS SIDE EVERY TIME.
>> ONE OF THE PATIENTS I TOOK
HIM TO SEE WAS QUITE ILL AND HE
WAS QUITE SHOCKED TO SEE
SOMEBODY THAT ILL IN THIS DAY
AND AGE WITH H.I.V. IN HIS
COUNTRY.
(*)
>> Adrienne: THESE ENCOUNTERS
HAVE HISTORY.
PRINCE HARRY IN THE SAME PLACE,
SAME WAY AS HIS MOTHER.
DIANA STARTED COMING HERE IN THE
LATE '80s.
THINK OF IT.
SHE WAS CLUTCHING THE HANDS OF
THE VERY ILL AT A TIME WHEN FEAR
WAS SO ACUTE PEOPLE WERE
THROWING BRICKS THROUGH THEIR
WINDOWS.
>> PEOPLE WERE LOSING THEIR
JOBS.
>> Reporter: JULIAN WAS A NURSE
HERE.
>> PEOPLE HAD AIDS SCRIBBLED ON
THEIR DOORS LIKE GRAFFITI.
>> Adrienne: FOR DIANA TO BE SO
LOVING WITH THE LIKES OF THIS
MAN, MARTIN, WHOSE OWN FAMILY
HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM,
WHO WOULD SHIP BACK HIS LETTERS
WITH "RETURN TO SENDER" IS
REALLY SOMETHING.
>> SHE TOUCHED HIM.
SHE KISSED HIM.
AGAIN, IT JUST EXPLODED ACROSS
THE WORLD.
>> WHEN THIS PHOTOGRAPH WENT
PUBLIC IN THE MEDIA, HIS MOTHER
CAME TO VISIT.
AND THEY RECONCILED.
>> Reporter: IT WAS JUST IN
TIME.
MARTIN DIED TWO WEEKS LATER.
DIANA IS EVERYWHERE HERE.
AND NOW THAT IT'S HER SON THAT
SHOWS UP, IT'S THE SPIRIT OF HER
THAT HE SOMETIMES LOOKS FOR.
>> HE LOVES TO HEAR THE STORIES
OF HER VISITS HERE.
>> Reporter: CARRIE TELLS OF A
MIRACULOUS WOMAN WHO MET DIANA
AS AN ILL CHILD BUT SURVIVED.
HARRY HAD QUESTIONS FOR HER.
>> SHE SAID TO HARRY, I REMEMBER
CUDDLING UP ON HER LAP AND HOW
SOFT AND COMFORTABLE IT WAS.
HE SAID, "I REMEMBER THAT WELL."
>> Adrienne: OF COURSE, HE
WOULD.
HIS MEMORIES ARE THE FROZEN ONES
OF A CHILD, JUST 12 WITH THOSE
CLINCHED FISTS WALKING BEHIND
THE CASKET OF HIS MOTHER.
FOR THAT PERSONAL LOSS TO BE SO
PUBLIC HAS, AS HE HAS SAID,
MARKED HIM.
>> WHEN YOU'RE THAT YOUNG AND
SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENS TO
YOU, IT'S IN YOUR HEART AND HEAD
AND STAYS THERE FOR A LONG TIME.
AT THAT POINT, I WAS STILL -- I
WASN'T THERE.
I WAS STILL IN SHOCK.
(*)
>> Adrienne: THE OVERWHELMING
DISPLAYS OF PUBLIC SORROW HAVE
BEEN GONE FOR DECADES NOW.
BUT THE EFFECT OF THOSE SURREAL
MOMENTS HAS STAYED.
>> ON ONE LEVEL, I FELT FURIOUS
THAT SO MANY PEOPLE WERE CRYING
AND SCREAMING AND YELLING ABOUT
SOMEONE THEY DIDN'T KNOW.
>> Reporter: JULIA SAMUEL HAS A
LONG RELATIONSHIP WITH GRIEF AND
THE ROYALS.
>> ON ANOTHER LEVEL, IT FELT
COMPLETELY APPROPRIATE THAT
EVERYBODY DID BECAUSE THAT'S
WHAT WE WERE ALL FEELING.
>> Adrienne: SHE WAS A FRIEND OF
DIANA'S.
IS CLOSE TO HER SONS.
SHE'S ALSO A PSYCHOTHERAPIST WHO
HAS WRITTEN EXTENSIVELY ON
GRIEF'S GRIP IN "GRIEF
WORKS."
>> IT'S MESSY.
IT'S CHAOTIC.
IT FEELS LIKE THE WEATHER.
IT COMES AND HITS YOU WHEN YOU
DON'T EXPECT IT.
>> Adrienne: BY HIS OWN
ADMISSION, IT'S HIT HARRY
ESPECIALLY HARD.
THE LASHING OUT, ACTING OUT OF
HIS TEENS AND 20s WAS, IT SEEMS,
HIS WAY OF NOT DEALING WITH IT.
ON THE PRINCES, SAMUEL IS QUITE
PRIVATE, BUT CANNOT HIDE HER
PRIDE OF THEIR DECISION TO BE
OPEN ABOUT THEIR LOSS AS THEY
SEEM TO BE ROOTING FOR HIS
HAPPINESS.
>> BETWEEN THEM, THEY'VE REALLY
HELPED TO SAVE PEOPLE'S LIVES.
>> WE'RE WORKING WITH OUR
PARTNER CHARITIES AND THOUSAND
OF PEOPLE TO CHANGE THE WAY WE
THINK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH.
>> Adrienne: SAMUEL SEES WHAT
OTHERS DO, JUST AS THE PUBLIC IS
INVESTED IN HIS GRIEF, THEY SEEM
TO BE ROOTING FOR HIS HAPPINESS.
>> HE'S FOUND A WAY OF LOVING,
OF BEING LOVED.
OF HAVING HOPE FOR HIS FUTURE.
OF KNOWING THAT HE HAS
RESPONSIBILITIES AND THAT HE CAN
MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
AND THAT HE CAN JUST BE HIMSELF.
AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT CONNECTS
EVERYBODY TO HIM.
THAT HE FEELS SO GENUINE AND
DIANA WAS THE SAME WAY.
>> MY MOTHER CAMPAIGNED TO DRAW
ATTENTION TO THE HORRIFIC AND
INDISCRIMINATE IMPACTS OF
LANDMINES.
>> Adrienne: WHAT MATTERED TO
HER, BY DESIGN OTHER DEFAULT,
MATTERS TO HIM.
ALMOST ALL THE CHARITIES HE
THREW HIMSELF INTO, REFLECT HER
CAUSES, TOO.
THOSE WHO KNEW HER SAY DIANA
UNDERSTOOD PERFECTLY THE MEASURE
OF HER POWER.
HER ABILITY TO DRAG THE WORLD'S
MEDIA BY THE CAMERA LENSES
TOWARDS THE PEOPLE AND THE
CAUSES SHE FOUND IMPORTANT.
DRAW THE LIGHT AND THEN DIVERT
IT.
THAT'S A LESSON THAT STUCK.
AND THAT'S THE SECRET SAUCE
BEHIND SOME OF THE WEDDING
PLANS.
INSTEAD OF GIFTS, THE COUPLE
WANTS DONATIONS FOR SPECIFIC
CHARITIES, LIKE CHIVA, DEDICATED
TO KIDS LIVING WITH H.I.V. AND
THE STIGMA IT BRINGS.
THE VOLUNTEERS OF THIS TINY
GROUP HAD NO IDEA THAT IT WAS
COMING AND DOES IT EVER MATTER.
>> THE FACT THAT THERE WILL BE
CHILDREN BROUGHT UP IN ISOLATION
BECAUSE OF FUNDS FROM THE
WEDDING OPENS UP SOMEONE'S WORLD
IN AN INCREDIBLE WAY THAT I WISH
I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO
WHEN I WAS A LOT YOUNGER.
>> Adrienne: THIS IS PERSONAL.
MERCY WAS BORN WITH H.I.V.
WASN'T TOLD UNTIL SHE WAS A TEEN
AND THEN THEN WAS ADVISED TO
KEEP IT QUIET.
>> DON'T TELL ANYBODY.
IT WON'T BE ACCEPTED IN SOCIETY.
YOU KNOW, LIKE, OKAY, WHY ARE
YOU TELLING ME THIS?
WHAT DO I DO WITH THE
INFORMATION IF I'M NOT SUPPOSED
TO TELL ANYONE?
DO I JUST LIKE SIT WITH IT?
I DON'T KNOW.
AND, YEAH, SO I DIDN'T TALK
ABOUT IT.
>> Adrienne: SO SHE LIVED TWO
LIVES.
HANGING OUT WITH UNIVERSITY
FRIENDS THAT KNEW NOTHING ABOUT
IT.
ON THE WEEKENDS, VOLUNTEERING
WITH KIDS WITH H.I.V. FAR AWAY.
THE WORLDS DIDN'T MEET AND IT
WORKED UNTIL SHE GOT A CALL.
>> SO THIS IS THE DIANA'S LEGACY
AWARD.
>> Adrienne: SHE WON DIANA'S
AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO STEP
UP, AN HONOUR, BUT TO ACCEPT,
SHE WOULD HAVE TO OPEN UP.
THEY COULDN'T JUST GIVE IT TO
YOU, RIGHT?
IT MEANT YOU MAKING A BIG
DECISION.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO DECIDE?
>> THIS IS MY CHANCE TO STAND UP
AND MAKE SOME NOISE, I SUPPOSE.
IT IS A CONVERSATION THAT I HAD
BEEN HAVING, BUT HAD NOT
IMAGINED WHAT THE OUTCOME WOULD
BE LIKE.
I DECIDED THAT I WOULD COME OUT
AND TELL EVERYONE.
>> Adrienne: BEING OPEN CHANGED
EVERYTHING.
IT'S THE SAME TYPE OF DISCOVERY
PRINCE HARRY MADE FOR HIMSELF.
SHE ADMITS SHE DIDN'T KNOW MUCH
ABOUT HIM BEFORE, BUT NOW THERE
IS PRIDE IN THAT VOICE.
>> HE RECENTLY DID AN H.I.V.
TEST IN THE U.K.
A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL FAMILY
STROLLING IN AND GETTING AN
H.I.V. TEST, IT'S INSANE.
>> Reporter: LOOKING BACK, WHAT
DOES SHE THINK ABOUT THAT TIME
SHE HELD HER HARD SECRET CLOSE?
>> I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS WORTH
LIVING ALL THAT TIME IN
ISOLATION AND NOT BEING ABLE TO
TALK ABOUT SOME THINGS.
AND JUST BEING ABLE TO STEP INTO
WHO I REALLY AM AND BE
COMFORTABLE WITH THAT.
>> Adrienne: STEPPING OUT OF THE
SHADOWS, STEPPING INTO THE FULL
GLOW, SEEMS TO BE MUCH OF WHAT
DIANA AND NOW HER SON HAS DONE
FOR THEMSELVES FIRST AND FOR
OTHERS ALONG THE WAY.
AND PRINCE HARRY SEEMS AWARE
THAT THE WORK IS UNFINISHED.
BACK AT MILDMAY, THERE WOULD BE
A SUBTLY EASY TO MISS.
THE FROSTING ON THE GLASS.
THE PATIENTS WANT THAT, AFRAID
OF BEING JUDGED UNFAIRLY.
IT'S A SLOW CHIPPING AWAY AT
THAT.
THE PRINCE IS DETERMINED.
>> HE SAID HE WANTS TO DO AS
MUCH AS HE CAN WHILE HE STILL
HAS THE POWER TO, YOU KNOW,
PUBLICIZE OR BREAK DOWN THE
STIGMA.
>> Adrienne: THE CLOCK TICKS.
PRINCE WILLIAM'S CHILDREN WILL
SOON GROW TO HAVE THEIR OWN
CAUSES TO CHAMPION.
THEY'LL BE THE ONES DRAWING THE
LIGHT.
HARRY IS A PRINCE IN A HURRY,
AWARE AND GRATEFUL FOR ALL HE'S
FOUND AFTER ALL HE'S LOST.
>>> LOOKING BACK THIS YEAR,
IT'S BEEN HARD TO FATHOM
EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED -- THE
ROYAL WEDDING, OLYMPICS, THE
DISASTERS, SO MUCH POLITICAL
NEWS.
GOOD TIME THEN FOR REPORTERS TO
TAKE STOCK OF WHAT STOOD OUT.
BRIAR STEWART TAKES US TO
THAILAND.
13 BOYS STUCK IN A CAVE AND THE
WORLD HOPING FOR THE BEST.
>> Reporter: I THINK ONE OF THE
MOMENTS THAT STUCK OUT IS WHEN
WE WENT TO ONE OF THE SCHOOLS
AND IT WAS WHERE ONE OF THE TEAM
MEMBERS WENT TO SCHOOL.
THIS BOY WAS THE ONE, BY THE
WAY, WHO WHEN RESCUERS REACHED
THE TEAM, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE

We're at the cottage!

>> Adrienne: ACTOR KEVIN SPACEY
WAS CHARGED TODAY WITH FELONY
SEXUAL ASSAULT.
HE'S ACAUSED OF FORCIBLY GROPING
AN 18-YEAR-OLD MAN IN A
MASSACHUSETTS BAR IN 2016.
THAT NEWS WAS SHORTLY FOLLOWED
BY THIS.
>> OF COURSE, SOME BELIEVED
EVERYTHING AND HAVE BEEN WAITING
WITH BAITED BREATH TO HEAR ME
CONFESS IT ALL.
THEY'RE JUST DYING TO HAVE ME
DECLARE THAT EVERYTHING SAID WAS
TRUE AND I GOT WHAT I DESERVED.
>> Adrienne: SPACEY RELEASED
THIS PUZZLING VIDEO IN HIS FIRST
APPEARANCE IN A YEAR SINCE
ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL
ALLEGATIONS CAME TO LIGHT.
HE SEEMED TO BE PLAYING HIS
CHARACTER IN "HOUSE OF CARDS,"
BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN THE
AMORAL POLITICIAN HE PLAYED AND
HIS OWN SITUATION.
>> IF I DIDN'T PAY THE PRICE FOR
THE THINGS WE KNOW I DID DO, I
WILL NOT PAY THE PRICE FOR THE
THINGS I DIDN'T DO.
>> Adrienne: KEVIN SPACEY IS DUE
IN COURT JANUARY 7.
>>> IT IS ALREADY
CHRISTMAS DAY IN BETHLEHEM,
WHERE MIDNIGHT MASS WAS
CELEBRATED AT THE CHURCH OF THE
NATIVITY.
CHRISTIANS REVERE THE SITE AS
THE BIRTHPLACE OF JESUS.
OUTSIDE VISITORS FROM AROUND THE
WORLD TOOK IN THE FESTIVITIES,
10,000 TRAVELERS ARE STAYING
OVERNIGHT IN BETHLEHEM, THE
BIGGEST CELEBRATION THERE IN
YEARS.
>> Adrienne: THAT'S PRESIDENT
TRUMP AND HIS WIFE, MELANIA,
TAKING CALLS FROM CHILDREN ABOUT
WHERE SANTA CLAUS IS.
WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIMPLE
PHOTO-OP WENT OFF THE RAILS IF
HE ASKED A 7-YEAR-OLD, A LITTLE
BOY NAMED COLEMAN, IF HE
BELIEVED IN SANTA.
DON'T WORRY, COLEMAN DID GET HIS
ANSWER.
NORAD'S SANTA TRACKER SAID THAT
HE IS ON SCHEDULED FOR HIS ROUTE
TONIGHT.
>>> CBC JOURNALISTS SEE AND HEAR
A LOT ON ASSIGNMENT AND WE KEEP
GOOD NOTES.
NOT ALL THOSE DETAILS MAKE IT ON
THE AIR, THOUGH.
THE TYRANNY OF TIME CONSTRAINTS
IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE.
WE'VE ASKED SOME OF OUR
REPORTERS TO REFLECT ON A STORY
THEY COVERED THIS YEAR.
BRIAR STEWART WAS ON THE SCENE
IN THAILAND FOR A GLOBAL
NAIL-BITER.
(*)
>> Ian: ON THIS MONDAY NIGHT, AN
EXTRAORDINARY RESCUE OPERATION
DEEP IN A CAVE IN NORTHERN
THAILAND.
>> Reporter: THIS STORY REALLY
GRABBED EVERYBODY'S ATTENTION
BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT UNFOLDED.
I WAS BACK IN VANCOUVER,
FOLLOWING THE NEWS, LIKE
EVERYBODY ELSE.
I WAS THINKING, THIS DOESN'T
LOOK GOOD.
IF THEY FIND THESE KIDS, THEY
PROBABLY WON'T BE ALIVE.
>> HOW MANY OF YOU?
13.
BRILLIANT.
>> Reporter: BUT THEN THEY FOUND
THEM AND THE SHOT OF THE KIDS
AND THEIR COACH HUDDLED ON THE
ROCK, SITTING THERE, ESSENTIALLY
WAITING TO BE RESCUED, WAS JUST
UNBELIEVABLE.
>> WE'RE HAPPY, TOO.
>> Reporter: IT WAS AN
INCREDIBLE STORY.
ONCE THE OXYGEN LEVELS IN THE
CAVE STARTED DROPPING, CBC MADE
THE DECISION TO SEND US.
WE GOT A CALL 6:00.
A M. SATURDAY MORNING AND WE
WERE ON A FLIGHT A FEW HOURS
LATER.
I'VE COVERED QUITE A FEW MAJOR
EVENTS WHERE YOU HAVE MEDIA FROM
ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT NOTHING
LIKE THIS.
THERE WERE SEVERAL HUNDRED
MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA THERE.
BY THE TIME WE GOT THERE, IT WAS
ORGANISED.
THERE WAS A MEDIA CENTRE.
IT WAS RAINING SO MUCH, MEDIA
HAD BEEN HUDDLED UNDER A TARP
TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR LAPTOPS
AND CAMERA GEAR FROM GETTING
WET.
AROUND THE OUTSIDE, VOLUNTEERS,
VOLUNTEERS THAT HAD COME DOWN
WITH THEIR MOTORBIKES AND THEY
WERE ABLE TO FERRY MEMBERS OF
THE MEDIA TO -- THE CLOSEST WE
COULD GET TO THE ENTRANCE OF THE
CAVE.
THAT'S WHAT THEY DID ALL DAY.
THEY FERRIED MEDIA BACK AND
FORTH.
AND DOWN THERE, THERE WERE MORE
VOLUNTEERS, VOLUNTEERS COOKING
NOODLES, MAKING COFFEE.
AND IT SHOWED WHAT A COMMUNITY
EFFORT IT WAS.
IT WAS VERY MUDDY.
WE HAD TALL RAIN BOOTS ON THE
WHOLE TIME.
IF YOU DROPPED A MICROPHONE OR A
CABLE, IT WOULD GET STUCK IN THE
MUD.
AND THEN YOU HAVE THE HUMIDITY
AND EVERYTHING ON TOP OF THAT.
THE CHALLENGES OF BEING IN THAT
ENVIRONMENT.
I THINK ONE OF THE MOMENTS THAT
STUCK OUT IS WHEN WE WENT TO ONE
OF THE SCHOOLS AND IT WAS WHERE
ONE OF THE TEAM MEMBERS WENT TO
SCHOOL.
THIS BOY WAS THE ONE, BY THE
WAY, WHEN RESCUERS REACHED THE
TEAM, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT
SPOKE ENGLISH.
HE WAS A STAR ATHLETE.
HE SPOKE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT
LANGUAGES.
HEARING ABOUT WHAT A HIGH
ACHIEVER HE WAS AND BEING ABLE
TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE DIVERS
WHEN THEY FOUND THE TEAM, THEY
HAD THIS WHOLE SHRINE UP TO HIM
IN THE ATRIUM OF THE SCHOOL.
THEY HAD PICTURES OF HIM.
PICTURES THEY HAD DRAWN.
WORDS OF COMFORT AND GOOD
WISHES.
IT WAS AMAZING TO HEAR ABOUT HIS
PERSONAL STORY.
ALL THE RAIN THEY PREDICTED AND
FEARED HAS ARRIVED.
SO OFFICIALS WILL WATCH THE
WATER LEVEL INSIDE THAT CAVE
VERY CLOSELY WHEN THEY START THE
NEXT AND POSSIBLY FINAL RESCUE.
SO THE THIRD DAY OF THE RESCUE
OPERATION, THERE WAS A SENSE
THAT THEY WERE GOING TO TRY TO
BRING OUT ALL FIVE ON THE FINAL
DAY.
THERE WAS A WHOLE PROCESS.
ONCE THE BOYS WERE RESCUED FROM
THE CAVE, THEY WERE TAKEN IN AN
AMBULANCE.
DRIVEN TO A HELICOPTER.
PUT IN THE HELICOPTER, AND FLOWN
TO THE HOSPITAL.
SO EVERY TIME YOU SAW THAT
HELICOPTER TAKE OFF, YOU KNEW IT
WAS ANOTHER BOY THAT WAS OUT OF
THE CAVE.
THERE WAS A RUNNING TALLY.
PEOPLE SAID, THAT'S ONE, THAT'S
TWO, THAT'S THREE.
[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]
AND BY THE TIME THE HELICOPTER
TOOK OFF THE FIFTH TIME, YOU
KNEW THE ENTIRE TEAM WAS OUT OF
THAT CAVE.
[SINGING]
THERE WAS A LOT OF
CELEBRATIONS.
WHERE WE WERE DOWN BY THE
VOLUNTEERS, PEOPLE WERE SINGING
AND DANCING.
I WAS INTERVIEWING A WOMAN, WHO
HAD BEEN VOLUNTEERING,
TRANSLATING.
DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE
INTERVIEW, SHE GAVE ME A HUG.
AND THAT REALLY STAYS WITH ME
BECAUSE, FOR ONE, PEOPLE
TYPICALLY DON'T HUG ME IN THE
MIDDLE OF AN INTERVIEW, AND SHE
WAS SO HAPPY THAT THAT'S HOW SHE
WANTED TO EXPRESS HERSELF AT
THAT MOMENT.
AS A REPORTER, A LOT OF THE
TIMES YOU COVER THINGS WHERE
THERE'S NOT A HAPPY ENDING,
WHERE THERE IS A TRAGEDY.
AND IT'S BAD NEWS.
IN THIS CASE, IT WAS REALLY
INTERESTING TO BE THERE WHEN IT
WAS A REALLY GOOD OUTCOME.
>> Ian: OBVIOUSLY PEOPLE THERE
ARE THRILLED AT THE OUTCOME,
ANXIOUS TO SEE THE BOYS.
WHEN MIGHT THAT HAPPEN?
>> Reporter: SOME OF THE PARENTS
HAVE ALREADY VISITED THE BOYS IN
THE HOSPITAL AND MORE WILL SOON.
THIS IS A STORY WHERE EVERYBODY,
EVERYBODY WAS ROOTING FOR THAT
TEAM AND FOR ALL THE RESCUERS
AND, YOU KNOW, REPORTER OR NOT,
YOU CAN'T HELP BUT BE TOUCHED BY
THAT.
>> Adrienne: NEXT ON "THE
NATIONAL," ON THIS CHRISTMAS
EVE, A HOLIDAY TRADITION PLAYS
OUT IN THE NETHERLANDS, ONE THAT
HONOURS FALLEN CANADIAN
SOLDIERS.
THAT'S OUR "MOMENT" RIGHT AFTER
THE BREAK.
>> THEY'RE LIBERATED BY THE
CANADIAN SOLDIERS DURING THE
WAR.
AND WE ARE SO HAPPY THAT THEY
LIBERATED US.
AND SO THERE'S A CONNECTION
BETWEEN CANADA AND THE
NETHERLANDS.
>> Adrienne: ON THIS CHRISTMAS
EVE, PEOPLE IN THE NETHERLANDS
ARE LIGHTING CANDLES AT THE
GRAVES OF FALLEN SOLDIERS FROM
THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
MANY OF THOSE SOLDIERS WERE, OF
COURSE, CANADIANS.
THIS IS A TRADITION THAT STARTED
DECADES AGO AT ONE CEMETERY.
FOUR YEARS AGO, ONE MAN, DICK
JANSEN, THOUGHT THAT HIS
COUNTRYMEN COULD DO BETTER THAN
THAT.
PEOPLE ARE GATHERING AT HUNDREDS
OF CEMETERIES IN THE NETHERLANDS
AND ACROSS WESTERN EUROPE.
THAT'S OUR "MOMENT" TONIGHT.
>> IT CAME OVER IN HOLDEN, 28
YEARS AGO, WITH A WOMAN FROM
FINLAND.
AND IT WAS A TRADITION IN
FINLAND TO BURN A CANDLE FOR
PEOPLE BY THEIR GRAVE ON
CHRISTMAS EVE.
SO I THOUGHT, WHY ONLY THERE?
THE YEAR LAST, WE HAD 250.
LAST YEAR, 280.
THIS YEAR, MORE THAN 325
LOCATIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS.
THE NETHERLANDS, THEY WERE
LIBERATED BY THE CANADIAN
SOLDIERS DURING THE WAR.
SO THERE'S A CONNECTION BETWEEN
CANADA AND THE NETHERLANDS.
THEY'RE OUR HEROES.
THEY PAID THE HIGHEST PRICE A
MAN OR A WOMAN CAN PAY AND IT'S
FOR YOUR AND MY FREEDOM.
WE CAN SPEAK AND DO WHAT WE LIKE
TO DO AND WE MAY NOT FORGET
THEM.
>> Adrienne: DICK JANSEN SAID
FOUR YEARS AGO WHEN HE THOUGHT,
WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS, LIKE
ANY MOVEMENT, HE THOUGHT HE
WOULD GET ONLY A MODEST
REACTION.
HE STARTED A FACEBOOK GROUP.
FIGURED MAYBE 20 PEOPLE WOULD
SIGN UP.
HE SAID THE REACTION WAS SO
SWIFT AND SO BIG HE THOUGHT HIS
COMPUTER WOULD BURN UP.
AND THAT FIRST YEAR THEY HAD 150
PLACES AND NOW 325 PLUS.
THAT ARE DOING THIS.
THAT IS "THE NATIONAL" ON THIS
CHRISTMAS EVE.
GOOD NIGHT.
