Hackers leak details of 1,000 North Korean defectors putting lives at risk
HACKERS have leaked the personal information of nearly 1,000 North Koreans who defected
to the South, potentially jeopardising their safety and family.
According to the South Korean Unification Ministry, unknown hackers got access to a
resettlement agency's database.
The ministry said it discovered last week that the names, birth dates and addresses
of 997 defectors had been stolen through a computer infected with malicious software
at an agency called the Hana centre, in the southern city of Gumi.
North Korea is a brutal dictatorship and people who have fled have been abducted and there
was even a case of children being sentenced to hard labour after their parents escaped.
A ministry official told reporters on condition of anonymity, due to the sensitivity of the
issue: "The malware was planted through emails sent by an internal address."
The Hana centre is among 25 institutes the ministry runs around the country to help some
32,000 defectors adjust to life in the richer, democratic South by providing jobs, medical
and legal support.
Defectors, most of whom risked their lives to flee poverty and political oppression,
are a source of shame for North Korea.
Its state media often denounces them as "human scum" and accuses South Korean spies of kidnapping
some of them.
The ministry official did not say if North Korea was believed to be behind the hack,
or what the motive might have been.
A police investigation is under way to determine who did it.
North Korean hackers have in the past been accused of cyberattacks on South Korean state
agencies and businesses.
The communist dictatorship stole classified documents from the South's defence ministry
and a shipbuilder last year, while a cryptocurrency exchange filed for bankruptcy following a
cyberattack linked to the North.
North Korean state media has denied those cyberattacks.
The latest data breach comes at a delicate time for the two Koreas which have been rapidly
improving their relations after years of confrontation.
Affected defectors have been notified and there were no reports of any negative impact
of the data breach, so far.
The ministry official added: "We're sorry this has happened and will make efforts to
prevent it from recurring."
Several defectors, including one who became a South Korean television celebrity, have
disappeared in recent years only to turn up later in North Korean state media, criticising
South Korea and the fate of defectors.

My pour frame - using Acrylic Skin Stickers - Duration: 7:31.
Hey guys!
In this video I want to show you how you can embellish an old frame with the result of your acrylic pouring.
For this we will create an Acrylic Skin Sticker. You will find a list of material and a link to my book in the description below.
The technique I'm using is very simple. Tape the edges of a self-adhesive transparent foil on a stiff ground.
The shiny part of the foil should be on top. Then gently roughen it with sandpaper.
Put a base layer of acrylic color mixed with pouring medium on top and let it dry.
Now you can start with the colors of your choice and use it like a normal canvas.
I'm spreading some pouring medium on the surface to get a better flow.
After that I'm pouring a golden and a black paint mixture on top and let it flow.
All the colors have been mixed with pouring medium separately to get them fluid like you can see here.
I show you how to premix the colors and how to use the techniques of acrylic pouring in the basic tutorial.
On one side of the painting I poured a white paint mixture. Then I swiped the white paint over the other colors.
You can use a palette knife for this.
You can carefully torch the paint to create more cells.
In some areas, I want more shiny effects. Here I'm applying golden pigment on the wet paint.
Before using the Acrylic Skin Sticker, you should clean the surface from silicon oil rests.
Then cut out the foil in the size you need.
Here I'm cutting out four long stripes for the frame.
Remove the protection paper on the back of the sticker and press it on the surface.
At the edges you can use a knife to cut it.
This is how it looks like in the end.
With this method you can create a frame design that fits perfectly to the painting inside - like this one.
It's a reproduction of Gustav Klimt's famous painting "the kiss" which I painted with oil colors and gold leaf.
I like how the colors of the modern frame match the colors of the classical painting.
