Welcome to This Week on Windows,
where this week we are all about inspiring the creator in all of us.
How, you might ask?
With the Windows 10 Creators Update of course.
We've got 3D, we've got New Beam Integration for
you gaming enthusiasts and we've got a host of other updates and
new features to show off.
From some other people who know them best.
Let's start things off with the highly anticipated 3D in Windows 10.
To do that,
we sat down with Ben Reid from the Windows Next Generation Experiences
team, to show us some of the cool stuff we can do with these
new tools.
[MUSIC]
>> One of the things that I thought that it would be helpful to show,
would be how we are enabling or empowering and
inspiring the creator within all of us.
So let's say I'm working on something,
maybe it's a school project or something that I need to
put together, a little example of what an aquarium might look like.
This goldfish doesn't have any eyes, so I'm gonna go use the sticker tool
which allows you to apply any 2-D image onto a 3-D object.
And I don't have to be an expert in 3D tools here,
I just literally use my pen, I can use the mouse.
Drawing in 3D might sound like a bit of a daunting thing, and
so we've made it easy with this 3D dual tool.
And so I'm gonna quickly doodle some foliage here for
our fish tank and once I've done that, you'll see how this works.
So, there we go, I've created one.
I wanna move some of them forward, some backwards, so
that gives some more three-dimensional depth.
Now, the other thing that I wanted to mention was the community.
So, we have the community which is called the remix3.com,
which contains lots and lots of 3-D creations by individuals and
professionals and I'm gonna find something that somebody
else has created and essentially remix it with my aquarium here.
There's a nice aquarium,
I can view the creation that somebody else has put in here and
I can place it in my project so I can go back through all the steps.
So you could use this to show somebody how you've created this
3D creation.
And you can even get a video of it so that you can share it
with your friends so they too can recreate what you've done.
And then when I'm done, I could open up the new View
3D app which is part of the Creators Update, and I can have them open,
where I just created, so you can see how that works.
And once that loads, you'll be able to move around and
see that creation in full 3D.
So as you can see in the demos that I've given that there are a number
of ways in the Windows 10 Creators Update.
We are making it easier for
people to unlock and empower their creativity.
>> For more on Game Mode and Beam Integration,
Microsoft's new streaming service,
we'll toss it over to Peter Orullian from the XBox team.
[MUSIC]
>> I'm going to show you the Windows 10 Creators Update.
Let me start by sort of outlining how we
think about gaming from Microsoft.
We have this vision of the games you want to play with the friends you
want to play with, on the devices you want to play on.
First, let me show you how that expresses itself in Windows 10 in
Creators Update.
If you go into Settings,
the first thing thing you'd noticed is we've added a gaming category.
If we click into gaming,
we see we have four initial options with Creators Update.
Gamebar and Game DVR are already part of the product.
What we're adding is broadcasting and game mode.
We'll start with game mode.
Gamer will deliver performance benefits in two metrics,
both are frames perceptive metrics.
One is Peaks, and the other is Consistency.
The consistency is a frames per second average over time.
Why that's important is because at any given moment,
you may have a peak and then if your system is being tacked,
if there's a lot of visual information on screen or
if you've got a lot of software running on your PC,
you can see a precipitous drop of frames per second and
the experience then is stuttering or glitches in the playback of
the title, that's not only, not a good gaming experience but
it also may put you at a competitive disadvantage.
So, game mode is gonna normalize over time, and
that's the more important metric for us.
Game mode will recognize when there's resource contention on
the system and it will step in to prioritize those resources to
deliver the benefits I just described.
So it could be that you have a lower or entry-level PC gaming device and
it's gonna struggle to give you a really high-end gaming type
of experience.
Game mode can help in the interest of giving you that experience
by prioritizing those resources.
Here, I'll go into settings in the game bar, and you can see that I've
got an area for game mode where I can toggle that on.
Once that's done,
this game forever will run in game mode until I turn that off.
Again, flexibility for the PC gamers so
that they can make the choices they want.
The second thing that is a big part of the Creators Update for
gamers is beam immigration.
So we've done it on the console, what I'm gonna show you is here
on Windows 10 and it's built right into the shell.
So today if you're a streamer or
you wanna stream you download a third party software and
you have to configure that and you run it concurrent with your game.
And that's doable, a lot of PC gamer understand that.
But there's a lot of people who are interested in streaming,
they do a lot of consuming of streams that are maybe
intimidated by that amount of work, they're not technical enough.
Beams's gonna make that easy because what you'll do and
I'll show it here, is if you are in a game and you hit Windows + G,
there's a broadcast icon.
And if you hit that broadcast icon,
it's now launching the beam experience right inside this game.
I have some configuration options for camera and microphone.
I'll go ahead and just start the broadcast.
You can see my picture in picture so I am broadcasting.
And then what I'll show you is, I'll pull up an Edge browser
here on the right and you are now going to see my stream.
Now, this is not local area network.
This is going up to the cloud and back down.
And now, if you watch my cursor, you can see me moving it back and
forth and there's just a slight hesitation.
This is the near real-time experience we're describing.
If I were doing this on another platform,
you or I would be waiting 10 or 20 seconds to see my cursor move.
So, you can see how that really,
really gives us an advantage and creates a wonderful experience for
people who are receiving and participate in new streams.
>> Now to another update coming, this time through Microsoft Edge.
We caught up with Divya Kumar to tell us all about it.
>> So here, I've got multiple tabs open on my Microsoft Edge screen.
And previously, you can actually just hover over individual
tabs to get a visual preview of the particular page.
We don't have that feature but
what we actually introduced is there is an option to show tab preview.
So if I click on that icon, you'll actually see a bar pop out and
you'll see all your tabs that you have open.
So now you can compare every single page you have so
it's easy to compare content.
And you don't actually have to go to the individual pages, wait for
them to load so it really saves me time.
Now, say I'm done and I'm bored of just holiday planning.
But that would really never be boring but
I wanted to go do some shopping, get gear up for my upcoming holiday.
But I don't really want to lose this tabs that I've got open, but
then I don't really wanna favorite them.
They're just essentially research for my upcoming holiday.
I can just use this feature that we've got here
that's called set these tabs aside.
I click the icon and all those tabs that I previously had open
have been swept away, but they they haven't disappeared.
I go into the center, where all of the tabs that I've actually just
swept away live essentially, and
you can see that those tabs all show up here in the lefthand side pane.
And I can restore them if I wanted to go back in holiday planning, but
right now I just want to go through some shopping sites to
see what I want to buy.
So I'm gonna restore these tabs that I was looking through earlier and
voila, they're all back in my tab and I can get
right back into my shopping session without any disruption at all.
The on the core focus that we've had with Microsoft Edge is just
giving users a better reading experience.
One of the things that we did previously was Microsoft Edge is not
the default PDF Reader.
We wanted to obviously boost that and with Creators Update
what you'll see is Microsoft Edge is now the default Ebook reader so
anything that's an e-publication of course including PDFs,
books that you download from Windows Store, free or purchased,
Microsoft Edge now becomes the default reader for those books.
So, really just removes the need to download another app for it.
So, say I went ahead download a few classics from the Windows store and
you will see Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the Time Machine,
now that will show up under hub.
Where previously we had favourites, reading list, history and
downloads, you'll also see the books icon.
I can go ahead and just click on one of the books, and
the book essentially renders just like it would an e-reader.
I can scroll through my pages using the keyboard,
I can scroll through pages using the scroll bar at the bottom or
I can use multiple e-reader functionality up top where I can go
through all the chapters, I can bookmark using the bookmark tool,
I also have the ability to change background colors or
font sizes, what font I'm using or even the spacing between the text.
It just makes it more easier, it makes it more comfortable to read.
At the same time, if you're in a Cortana-supported market and
if you've got Cortana enabled on your device,
I can highlight one of the words in the book, right-click ask Cortana,
and Cortana pops in to help you with the reference that you have.
So these are some of the great features that are obviously coming
to Microsoft from Creators Update.
And then obviously like I mentioned before, you'll see security,
battery life, and performance updates as well.
>> So Chaitanya, normally you and I are co-hosting This Week on Windows
but today you are here to talk about something that is very near and
dear to your heart, that is Windows Mixed Reality.
So first off, what is Windows Mixed Reality?
>> Windows Mixed Reality is the experience that lights up everything
from the HoloLens to a new class of immersive headsets.
>> So for the Creators Update, what does that mean and
how is it going to support the Windows Mixed Reality?
>> So the Creators Update will unlock a new set of developers who
can use our developer kit to make new content for
Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
>> You've talked about headsets, what's the future look like for
Windows Mixed Reality, what can we look forward to?
>> So we've announced some really powerful partnerships with OEM,
who will be releasing these headsets.
What's great about these headsets?
They're using this amazing technology from HoloLens
that enables inside out tracking.
See there is no set up and they all start at just $299.
>> Thanks so much, Chaitanya.
>> We're excited.
>> So the Creators Update also incorporates new features for
the Windows 10 apps you know and love.
For more on some of the cool new stuff you can do,
we'll toss it back over to Ben from the Windows Team.
>> So the move is in TV app now and the Creators Update includes support
for three-sixty degree videos so that's a pretty cool edition.
One of the things that we see people doing in maps for example,
here you can see an example where I'm planning a trip that
I'm gonna take to Skagway, Alaska this summer.
And my friends and I are gonna stay in this cool Bed
& Breakfast which is just here, and I'm going to use maps to kind of
plan out one of the trips and the hikes that we want to take.
So I'm going to say I'm gonna start my journey from that location,
and then I'm going to go down here and find the start of the trail,
and say that's where I'm going to end up, and
then get my directions which looks pretty standard.
But one of the cool things here with the maps experience is I can use
the inking again to measure and plan what my hike is gonna look like.
So I'm gonna draw directly onto the map starting
at the end of the directions there, come down to this body of water, and
we're gonna kinda hike around it.
I'm just drawing directly on the screen here.
And I go around the top here, and then finish back there.
And you can see now, it's figured out that that's 2.3 miles.
That sounds like a pretty good hike.
But I also wanna share where we're gonna meet up for lunch, so
I'm gonna just go over here and draw a little arrow and say meet here,
so we know where, you know if somebody is faster than the others,
they'll know where to meet.
So, they'll go ahead and meet there.
>> The Creators Update also improves Windows 10 security and
privacy measures.
We talked to Sherilyn from the Windows team to find out what
new features are keeping Windows users safe and secure.
Now Sherilyn, privacy and
security is very important to a lot of people.
How does the Creators Update address privacy and security concerns?
>> You know the Creators Update is fantastic,
let's talk security first.
So the Windows Defender Security Center combines security and
health options in one place so t's easier for
people to see and control Windows 10 device security and health options.
>> Okay there is also something called the privacy dashboard,
tell me what that is.
>> [LAUGH] Well the privacy dashboard is a new dashboard
that's gonna let you see and manage activity across multiple devices
as well as changes to how Windows 10 privacy settings will be designed
and featured for customers in the upcoming Creators Update.
>> Fantastic.
Now, if you want to learn more about security and privacy for Windows 10,
head over to the Windows blog.
Speaking of the Windows blog, we have someone next that we caught up
with who knows a thing or two about this major update.
I am here with the editor-in-chief of the Windows blog and,
Molly, you have gotten a chance to be up close and
personal with the Creators Update.
Tell me what's making your top ten list.
>> Another really great new feature coming is called mini-view.
This keeps an ever present window on top of what you're working on.
So, that window could be something like
binge watching your favorite show or being on a Skype call, and
that stays right on top of what you're working on.
Also, you'll notice a new category come into the Windows store
called Books.
And finally, there's night light settings.
Now, this is really great because if you're working late at night and
the screen is bright, and with Night Light, it lowers the blue light
emitted from your screen and also helps you sleep better at night.
>> Game changer.
Now Allie, where can they learn more about this stuff?
>> Everything you need to know is on blogs.windows.com.
[MUSIC]
