[♪ INTRO]
I've lost count of how many times I've had to say this, but, spoiler alert:
we did not find aliens.
Ever get a missed call from a blocked number?
It's the most frustrating thing.
Maybe it was just a scammer, but it could also have been someone
you actually wanted to talk to.
And you might never find out who it was.
Now imagine if that missed call came from an alien star system.
That's what happened to a group of researchers from the University of Puerto Rico, and when
they announced it a couple weeks ago, it started a furious hunt for the source.
The team was using the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico to study some nearby stars
when they picked up a really weird signal... which they called the "Weird!
Signal", because astronomers are creative that way.
For radio telescopes like Arecibo, strange signals aren't all that rare.
Lots of things emit radio waves that can interfere with measurements,
from microwave ovens to air traffic control radar.
That's why we tend to build big radio telescopes out in the middle of nowhere.
But this signal was especially unusual.
For one thing, it seemed to come from a single spot in the sky,
in the same direction as a red dwarf star called Ross 128.
The signal also showed what's known as dispersion,
meaning that the frequency of the signal changed over time.
There were a few possible explanations
for the Weird! Signal:
One was that the signal was coming from the star itself.
Red dwarfs are some of the most dynamic stars in the galaxy, so maybe this was just a way
they emit radio waves that we've never seen before.
It could have also been some strange activity from something else along the telescope's
line of sight, either in front of or behind the star, that we couldn't see.
The third main possibility was that the signal didn't come from deep space at all, and
we were just seeing some interference from a satellite.
Problem is, none of those explanations fit perfectly.
Which is why a lot of people latched onto the other option, the one that astronomers
don't like to bring up too much because people tend to get carried away:
It could be aliens.
For the research team, that was always at the bottom of the list, probability-wise.
In theory, anything we see in space that we can't explain could be caused by aliens.
But astronomers have discovered a lot of unexpected things over the years,
and so far aliens have never been the answer.
But you know the internet.
An astronomer says the words "extraterrestrial life" and suddenly there are headlines about
how we've discovered little green people.
So, while social media and the more tabloid-y side of the internet was collectively freaking
out, astronomers around the world started using other telescopes to look at Ross 128.
The first results are in, and surprise: it's not aliens.
The signal's probably coming from geostationary satellites: satellites that orbit with the
Earth's rotation so they stay at the same point in the sky all the time.
These satellites tend to hang out at the Earth's equator, which is exactly where the astronomers
pointed their telescope to observe Ross 128.
That explains why astronomers only saw the signal
while they were looking at that one star.
Geostationary satellites also use similar frequencies to the ones detected,
so it all makes sense.
But there's still one thing researchers aren't totally sure how to explain:
that weird dispersion effect.
Normally, signals from satellites don't change frequencies in that kind of pattern.
The original Puerto Rican team thinks the dispersion might come from
the radio waves reflecting somehow, but they'll need more time
to figure out exactly what's going on.
Meanwhile, we'll have to hunt for E.T. somewhere else.
But the Weird! Signal isn't the only weird thing that happened recently.
Last week, Elon Musk said that he's pretty sure SpaceX's new Falcon Heavy rocket will
explode during its first test launch, which is supposed to happen later this year.
Once it's up and running, the Falcon Heavy will be the company's first
heavy-duty launcher and the most powerful rocket in the world.
And they fully expect this giant rocket to explode
the first time they try launching it.
No big.
But it does kind of make sense.
Creating the Falcon Heavy has been a long road.
SpaceX originally wanted it to be ready by 2013,
but four years later it hasn't even been test-launched yet.
Part of the problem is that the rocket's design is tricky: it's basically three of
the company's smaller Falcon 9 rockets duct-taped together.
Since SpaceX has been flying the Falcon 9 for years, you might think it would be an
easy transition; Musk himself admitted as much.
But it turns out that a rocket with 27 engines is a lot different than one with nine.
For the Falcon Heavy to fly straight, all 27 need to be operating in perfect unison,
but that's not the only challenge.
All those extra engines also mean a ton of extra vibration and a lot more physical stress,
so SpaceX engineers have had to totally redesign the main body of the rocket
to keep it from ripping apart.
They're also planning to start pairs of engines a few milliseconds after each other,
because the force from all those engines starting up at once could warp the rocket's structure.
So there are a lot of complicated challenges and new designs with this rocket,
and the only way to find out if it actually works is to fly it.
And odds are at least one of the things they're trying isn't going to work.
Which means the rocket will blow up.
Musk says he just hopes the explosion happens long enough after liftoff
to keep it from damaging the launchpad, too.
But even if the rocket explodes, the data from the test will help engineers
figure out what they need to fix.
Plus, if a rocket's going to explode, you definitely want it to happen during the testing
phase, and not afterward when it's flying actual missions.
And it's worth the effort: once the kinks are worked out, the Falcon Heavy will be able
to launch more than four times as much as the Falcon 9.
That's a big deal for companies looking to fly bigger satellites, and it might be
an even bigger deal for exploring the solar system.
A more powerful rocket can go farther and faster, and it can also carry more,
which would allow scientists to include more instruments on future missions.
But first, there might be a few explosions.

Molecule Found on Saturn Moon Titan Could be 'Key to Life' - Duration: 1:38.
Where else might life exist in our solar system? That's a
question that NASA scientists are trying to answer. An
intriguing place we are studying is Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
It's the only body in the solar system other than Earth to
feature seas of liquid on its surface. But that liquid is
methane instead of water. The cell membranes we have on Earth,
part of our building blocks for life, could not form here.
Previous computer simulations investigated which chemicals
could be used to make cell-like membranes on Titan. It's been
calculated that this molecule, acrylonitrile, is the best
candidate to form the most stable membranes. What's
exciting is that our team at NASA Goddard has now detected
large amounts of this chemical in Titan's atmosphere, using
spectroscopic data from ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub
millimeter Array, located in Chile. And since Titan has rain,
a significant amount may be reaching the surface and ending
up in Titan's vast lakes. More research is needed, but by
definitively detecting this astrobiologically relevant
molecule on Titan, we are another step closer to
understanding how and where life could exist in our solar system.

KNO01MI.03 - Duration: 29:41.
As we continue our series now on the theme of knowing Scripture, we want to concentrate
in this session together on the foundational principles and concepts of the science of
biblical interpretation.
But before we do that, let's open with prayer.
Again, our Father and our God, we look to You as the author of all truth for the aid
and assistance of Your Holy Spirit, whom Thou hast promised to give us to help us and assist
us as we seek a better understanding of Your word.
Be with us then in the presence of the Spirit, for we ask it in the name of Christ.
Amen.
There's a sense in which interpreting the Bible is an art.
Maybe even it would be better to call it a science, but for a moment at least, let's
stick with the analogy of art.
I think of the category of art because of the problems that we've all been able to recognize
in twentieth century culture of a new wave of art that has swept across the landscape
of our culture, and in many cases bringing a sense of confusion and chaos.
We've had op art and pop art and abstract impressionism and so on, and in these different
schools of art and of artistic expression that have emerged, we've seen confusion in
the realm of interpreting art.
Some art is so abstract and at times so apparently chaotic that when we look at the painting,
we're not sure whether we should turn sideways or whether it's been framed and hung upside
down because we can't see the structure and the lines and the rhythmic patterns in it
as we're accustomed to in more classical forms of art.
And some of the more experimental and innovative art forms have been highly subjectivistic
in their interpretation.
And one of the questions that the art critic is interested in, and the layman as well when
he visits an art gallery or sees a painting in "Time" magazine, is what is the meaning
of this painting?
Or what is the sculptor trying to say with his latest masterpiece?
And we went through a period of art in the last twenty-five years where there was kind
of a freewheeling artistic expression where the artist was asked, "What did you mean by
your painting?" and his response was, "I meant whatever you find in it."
That is, a new rule of interpreting art emerged in some circles of art that said that the
artist now has the license to make this statement, "I paint it; you interpret it."
That is a conscious step to embrace a form of subjectivism that says there is no inherent
meaning in the art; there is no objective significance to what the artist has painted
or has sculpted, but rather, whatever you find in it or however you respond to it is
its ultimate meaning.
Now that has provoked a kind of crisis in the field of biblical understanding because
in that approach to art, if we would transfer it to the Bible, would leave us with no guidelines
of objectivity, no rules by which we can discover an objective meaning.
Now remember the framework that I'm working on here is the assertion that I've made that
there is in fact only one ultimately correct meaning to Scripture, an objective meaning,
and it's the meaning that the author of Scripture had in mind.
And we can look at that at two levels and two dimensions; we can try to understand the
meaning that Luke had in his mind as he wrote his gospel -- his intention.
What was he trying to express?
What was he trying to say?
What was he trying to communicate as one level of our search for understanding the Bible?
But in an ultimate sense, I'm coming from that school of thought that believes that
the Bible comes ultimately from God and that through the agency of the Holy Spirit, God
is the ultimate author, and so what we're looking for in interpreting the Bible is what
does God have in mind here; what was God communicating to His people when through the agency of the
prophets or the apostles, certain books of Scripture were set forth?
Now if we take that view of the Bible, that there is an objective meaning, then we need
to look at the Bible and the whole business of interpreting the Bible not only as an art,
but as a science.
And in fact, there is a science, an academic discipline, a particular subdivision of theology
that is exclusively concerned for looking at the scientific rules and methods and principles
that ought to govern our attempts to interpret the Scripture.
Every science has certain rules and methods that are followed within it, and sometimes
there are differences and controversies that arise within a science as to what are the
proper rules and what are the proper methods of approaching a certain science.
In the field of psychology, for example, there are all different forms of competing approaches
of methods to finding the best way to do psychology, and that's found even in medical science and
in astronomy and virtually every science there is has its competing schools of thought on
what is the best method to approach the field, what are the most important rules to be followed.
Now there is a sense in which the science of biblical interpretation has provoked a
major, very major and serious crisis for the church.
Now when theologians discuss this crisis, they talk about it in terms of a technical
word for it, which is the word "hermeneutics."
Some of you perhaps have never even heard the word; other ones, you'll let it fall off
your lips very casually in normal conversation -- the hermeneutical problem here, and so
on -- and you may be very knowledgeable of the disputes that are involved in that field.
But hermeneutics, and let me just take a minute to spell it for you, H-E-R-M-E-N-E-U -- hermeneu
-- T-I-C-S, hermeneutics; and hermeneutics is simply a fancy word to describe
the science of biblical interpretation, and it takes its meaning and its definition from
original Greek word that is involved with communication and of communicating information
by messages.
For example, if you remember your Greek mythology and your Roman mythology, I believe, in Roman
mythology, Mercury, the one with the winged feet had the special responsibility in the
pantheon of deities to be the messenger of god- of the gods and that's why he has wings
on his feet: so that he can fly from Olympus to Earth and back again and speedily bring
the messages that need to be brought back and forth.
He is the supreme communicator; he is the FTD of the ancient world.
But in the Greek pantheon, the corresponding god to Mercury was the god Hermes.
He was the messenger of the god, and it's the same basic concept; we are trying to understand
in the science of hermeneutics the message of Scripture.
What is it communicating, what is it conveying, what is it saying?
And hence, we have this special discipline or science that we call hermeneutics.
Well I said a moment ago that right now in this decade the church is facing one of its
most severe theological crises in the history of Christendom, and it focuses on this very
question of hermeneutics, of how do we interpret the Bible.
We can go back into history for the basic roots of the problem, and there have been
different watersheds in church history where hermeneutics has raised its head as a serious
question, but let me just isolate for a second one crisis point that I think most of us will
be able to sense a degree of familiarity with.
We go back to the nineteenth century, to that period where we saw the emergence of what
was called liberal theology.
Now as soon as I say that, I am frightened that we're going to have a problem here of
communication because the word, "liberal," generally means free-thinking, open-minded,
progressive, and so on; and I'm not using the term, "liberal," now in its wide and broad
and general sense.
I'm referring now to a very specific school of thought with very specific ideas and doctrines
that emerged in the nineteenth century.
And so-called nineteenth century liberalism had its own kind of crisis.
It came to the conclusion that the simple natural elements of the biblical content were
no longer believable in a modern, industrialized, scientific world, and that if we were to extract
anything from the Bible of lasting value, of contemporary value, we had to de super-naturalize
the New Testament and the Old Testament, and so there was, in effect, a crisis of belief.
And many scholars came to the conclusion that you simply could no longer believe in angels
and demons and miracles in the New Testament, and virgin births and resurrections and ascensions
and all that sort of thing.
Now you might say, well at that point, we're talking not about some of the tangential elements
or the minor details of the Christian faith, but when you're talking about resurrection,
you're talking about atonement, you're talking about the very substance of the Christian
gospel, and if you don't believe that, you're no longer a Christian.
And there were many who took that position in the controversy focusing on nineteenth
century liberal theology, but the crisis came about here.
People who came to this point said, "What do we do?
We have several options; we can just turn in our church cards and say, okay, frankly
candidly, we just don't believe in Christianity anymore, and let's close up shop and go home."
But these were people who controlled major theological seminaries, colleges, universities,
and they had at their disposal vast memberships in large church groups; in fact, in some cases,
entire denominations, and they say, "Wait a minute, the church is an institution that
still has a very significant impact on the culture, and we have this following.
Why should we just close the doors of the church and turn them into museums, why should
we just jettison Christianity?
Because we believe, as the liberals did, that there is still value from the New Testament
teaching of Jesus that is relevant for modern man."
They looked at the Sermon on the Mount, they looked at the ethic of Jesus, they looked
at His humanitarian program, they looked at His social concern, His concerns for mercy,
His concerns for justice, and they said, "Why shouldn't the church continue to exist, and
Christianity continue to exist as a viable cultural force working for the betterment
of the welfare of the human race?
But in order to do that, we have to revise its original meaning and extrapolate from
the New Testament just that relevant material, and free it from all that primitive business
of miracles and the supernatural."
And so that theology had to create a whole new approach to interpreting the Bible, an
approach that called for a reinterpretation, a revision, if you will, of the original message
of Jesus to make it relevant to modern man.
I mean, this is still very much alive today.
I remember when I went to seminary, the professors that I had came out of the liberal tradition,
and they would speak with great urgency about the passionate concerns that they had for
social welfare, which are very important indeed, and they would say, "Gentlemen, we've got
to make the Gospel relevant to modern man," and somehow that didn't sit right with me.
You know, that always kind of agitated me viscerally, inside, it would turn my stomach
upside down, I would want to jump up and scream at times and say, "Wait a minute, we don't
have to make the Gospel relevant.
There's nothing more relevant than the Gospel.
We have to show the relevancy, we have to manifest the relevancy, we have to explain
the relevancy, but we don't have to make the relevancy happen.
The Gospel is relevant."
And I'm one -- for one am persuaded that it is relevant in its original proclamation without
being revised or reinterpreted.
But that whole theology brought with it a whole new approach to biblical interpretation
that we need to be aware of.
Now in this present-day crisis of hermeneutics, we've gone way beyond the problems that nineteenth
century liberalism engendered, and again, there are many, many, many competing schools
of hermeneutics vying for acceptance within the church today.
And I don't have time in this brief introduction and overview to set forth in detail the various
nuances of these many different schools of thought, but I'll just mention three in passing
so that we can get at least a taste and a flavor of some of the agitation that's going
on out there in the churches, in the colleges, in the seminaries so that we can understand
what's up with respect to biblical interpretation.
The first method, which I will call the classical orthodox protestant method of biblical interpretation,
that which was formulated by the sixteenth century reformers and maintained itself down
throughout the ages and is still maintained in conservative schools of thought is known
as the Grammatico-Historical school.
Now there's another technical term, and we'll put it on the character generator so that
you can take notes on it and spell it again, see if I can spell it off the top of my head,
G-R-A-M-M-A-T-I-C-O-historical.
Grammatico-Historical school, that school of inter- of hermeneutics takes its name from
the idea that the proper approach to biblical interpretation is to try to study the historical
situation in which the Bible was written, the use of grammar, syntax, language, and
all the rest that was being used at the time the documents were written.
And by studying carefully word meanings of the first century and before, coming to an
understanding of the original meaning of the texts?
What did Luke mean when he wrote the gospel of Luke to first century people?
How could we recently expect his writings to be understood at that time in history?
What was their grammatical and historical understanding of the text?
And the grammatical, historical view says that's the way we would approach the Bible
and that's the way we are to understand the Bible now -- how it was written then.
We still have the problem of applying it to the twentieth century, but we recognize that
the documents themselves are tied, are chained, are tethered, if you will, to the historical
context in which they were originally written.
And that's the context in which we should seek to reconstruct if we want to have an
accurate understanding of them.
At the same time, we recognize that as interpreters, when we come to the Bible, we also have a
historical situation, and our historical situation is the twentieth century.
I live in an age of atomic bombs and automobiles and television and all of that, and there's
a sense in which my whole way of thinking, my whole way of understanding is very much
conditioned by my cultural setting, by -- and we're going to look at that in more detail
with some other problems that it raises later on, but just now for the moment, we understand
that we as interpreters live in the twentieth century, and there's a sense in which we're
tethered to our own day.
So there is a gap between the twentieth century and the first century and earlier, and the
science of hermeneutics in the Grammatico-Historical method seeks to bridge that gap by having
us go back and try to reconstruct the first century.
Other approaches say we don't have to do that; what we'll do is we'll take our twentieth
century concepts and our twentieth century standpoint and go back and rewrite the Scriptures
according to twentieth century things.
That's a different school of thought, which we'll get at a little later, but the classical
method is to seek the objective meaning of the past -- that's number one -- then after
we understand what it meant then, then we face the question of applying it to our present
day situation.
But as much as possible, we try not to let our present-day situation color or distort
the original meaning of the text.
Now the second method which was developed in the nineteenth century was called the Religious-Historical
Method, the religious-historical method.
Now that represented an approach to Scripture that grew out of a whole sweeping movement
of philosophy and changing of thinking and method that was characteristic of the nineteenth
century.
If there was a buzz word in nineteenth century intellectual thought, it was the word, "evolution."
Everybody's aware of the impact of evolution in biology, but it wasn't just Darwin in biology.
The concept of evolution was made felt in other areas, in philosophy, in emerging philosophies
of history, like Karl Marx, for example, like Hagel, for example.
Also in forms of political theory, like Spencer's social darwinianism -- ideas that the whole
process of history, art, economics, literature, everything is involved in a process of emerging,
and the basic governing idea is that history and art and everything else move, biology,
from the simple to the complex.
And the governing assumption was that religion does the same thing and that all religions
emerge from primitive types of animism and polytheism, and then as it gets more sophisticated,
moves to monotheism and to a more highly structured ethical abstract system, and that system was
imposed on the Bible, saying that we've got to understand the Old Testament, for example,
and simply an early primitive historical development just like any other religious things, and
that really Abraham was probably a polytheist; he believed in many gods and so on, and that
you don't really have ethical monotheism until the time of the seventeenth century prophets
and so on.
Now that viewpoint made quite an impact on the church.
When I went to seminary, it was standard operating procedure, you were considered a backwoods
idiot if you did not accept the documentary hypothesis of the Old Testament.
I'm sure most of you have heard of that, that the first five books of the Bible were not
written by Moses, but they were written by various sources at various periods of history
and their sources are indicated by the number J, E,D, and P, and then it got more sophisticated,
J1, J2, P1, P2, and so on, where multiple authors over many, many centuries rechanged
and revised and finally came up with the books that are attributed to Moses, but they were
relatively of late origin.
And that governed biblical interpretation as if it was an absolutely foregone conclusion
incontestably established fact.
Now the theories of evolution that underlined those approaches to the Bible have pretty
much gone by the boards, although some still hold them in smaller circuits, but some of
the interpretive principles are still very much alive, the documentary hypothesis, JEDP,
that kind of stuff is everywhere to be found as established proven fact.
Just last week it was interesting to see, I just saw last week an article where some
Hebrew scholars -- not Christian -- but fifty-four Israeli scholars subjected the five books
of the Pentateuch to the most rigorous, linguistic, syntactical evaluation that any portion of
the Bible has ever been submitted to by computer.
Fifty-four scholars did the most radically sizable amount of data that could be fed to
a computer to analyze, objectively, authorship of the first five books of the Bible, and
wouldn't you know the computer spewed out the results, and according to the computer,
that there was no question about it statistically that the first five books of the Old Testament
were written by a single author.
I predict right now that it'll take forty years before the scientific proof of that
will be accepted in the theological world because it smashes an idol of the religious
historical school of multiple authorship of the Pentateuch.
But we're not here to debate that point, but simply to illustrate to you that there are
different schools of thought.
The third one and the one that is most influential in our day, I'm going to call broadly the
existential school of thought.
The existential school of thought, which has given us the so-called new hermeneutic says
that we're not really interested in the original historical situation because it doesn't relate
to us today.
What we need is a theology that is timeless, that is not bound to the first century or
even bound to the twentieth century, but transcends that all, that redemption is something that
doesn't happen along historical lines, but it happens vertically, directly from above,
where I come to the Bible and the way I interpret it is existentially, in my own existential
situation, God can speak to me out of the blue, zicrk von hoben, directly from above,
up out of the blue, and somehow the Bible in an instant becomes the word of God to me
as God speaks to me through it.
But the Bible simply becomes a vehicle for this existential experience that takes place,
and so in this sense, we are approaching very rapidly the idea of the Bible being what modern
art is -- Luke wrote it, but we interpret it, freewheeling, according to our own existential
situation.
But dear friends, I am convinced that does radical violence to the text of Scripture,
and not only violence to the text of Scripture, but it does violence to the church, and it
does violence ultimately to the truth of Christ.
And so I, for one, contend against it with all of the strength that I can bring about
in this debate.
Let me just take an extra minute if I can to illustrate the thing.
We see the same problem with the intrusion of relativism in interpretation not simply
in the religious realm, but in our own national heritage.
The Supreme Court of the United States is by historical appointment primarily a hermeneutical
agency.
What does that mean?
That means that the function of the Supreme Court is to interpret the Constitution of
the United States of America and measure it against existing bits of legislation.
If congress passes a law and you don't think it's constitutional, you can appeal it all
the way to the Supreme Court for a ruling, and what the court was originally designed
to do was to look at the current law, look at the Constitution, and see if the two are
in harmony, and if they're not, the law's thrown out as unconstitutional.
But that requires interpretation, and interpreting the Constitution and the traditional method
in the courts was to interpret the Constitution according to the Grammatico-Historical method,
until recently, where a whole new approach has now been embraced that says we can reinterpret
the Constitution; not does this law really fit with what the fathers thought about in
the eighteenth century, but does this law really meet contemporary community standards.
Watch for it, watch for it in the news, watch for it in the legislative editions.
The governing principle of constitutionality has become consistent with contemporary community
standards, which change and change and change because we've brought into a view of relativism.
There are no absolutes, there are no abiding principles, and if that's the case, then the
Constitution itself can no longer function as an objective foundational guide for future
behavior, and so you can actually change the Constitution not by a constitutional amendment
but by simply reinterpreting it.
That's the kind of crisis we have in the Christian faith, in the Christian church, and that's
why the science of hermeneutics is vital, because if the new hermeneutic prevails, then
we will have a Jesus who is not the same yesterday, today, and forever, but a Jesus who goes through
as many changes as the theologians who are interpreting Him.
We're going to be searching for an objective method, and we're gong to be examining ways
to establish it throughout the rest of this course.

My MerNation Silicone Mermaid Tail: Bath Time Thoughts #Gratitude ♥ The Magic Crafter - Duration: 3:54.
Today is bath day for this beautiful creature.
Ahhhh! Look at Sparda in the bathtub.
You know, I was washing my tail and
(Sorry, I'm probably echoing right now. It's like an echo chamber in here!)
But I was washing my tail, and... you know, I realized something.
This... is a thing of beauty.
And I just wanted you guys to take a second
and NOT look at my fingernails!
(that are all torn up and scratched up by rocks)
But I want you to just admire the work
that the team over at MerNation Inc. did.
Like, look at that craftsmanship!
Those individual scales
and the design of this fluke.
(it's going to get blurry in a second...)
But, like... that design... ♥
Ugh. And look at the ways the colors blend.
And I don't know if you can see how it sparkles, but oh my gosh...
(I guess it doesn't exactly sparkle, it's more metallic than sparkly)
I just want to take a second and admire this silicone mermaid tail.
And how beautiful it is.
And if you have a tail--- not matter if it is fabric
or if it is a silicone mermaid tail,
or whatever yours is made of...
Just look at your tail and realize how lucky you are to have one of these things.
And admire the work
that whoever the heck it is
that decided they wanted to help people be mermaids
they decided to create this creation that you own.
Just admire their work.
Be grateful for what they have done and just
oh my gosh...
Feel lucky and soak it all in.
I love my little tail SO much!
I love my little Sparda!!!
I love you, Sparda! You're so cute! ♥
Okay, I guess "cute's" not really the word for it. You're beautiful.
You're gorgeous. You're handsome.
You're... my everything.
Look at that! ♥
The bath water looks so pretty...
I want to take a bath with my tail sometime.
Minus the shampoo, and conditioner and everything!
Ugh.
*Sigh* MerNation Inc. did such a great job.
I've had this tail for almost a year now.
I still love it, and I'm just...
Every single day,
I see it when I workout, because it's in my workout room, and I'm like
"oh my goodness..."
"where did this thing come from!?!"
It is obviously from some sort of magical land.
Not of this earth. Urrrgh!!
People at MerNation Inc... You are MAGICAL! ♥
That's all for this video!
Sorry!!! I just wanted to share bath time with you guys!
As weird as that sounds! Hahahaha!
"Let's take a bath together!!! ♪♫
That's what the title of this video should be! Hahaha
Oooohhhh goodness...
Goodness...
Well, have a magical day.
I will see you some other time. :)
I'm going to play in the bath water in the meantime. :D
Bye bye!!
Whew! I'm all wet!!!
OH SHOOT! I just got vinegar in my tea. :C
Nooooooooo!!!
"Thanks again, MerNation!"
"And also, a 'thanks' to every other tail-maker out there."
"The world is a more magical place because of you."
"YOU are awesome. Please keep up the amazing work! ♥"

What strange versions you have, Grandmother - Duration: 1:58.
Little Red Riding Hood is so pervasive, it's just such a familiar tale.
I have since been discovering there are many, many, many versions.
One has Little Red being helped by a wasp, a bird, and a crone. They save her, Grandma is toast.
There's a really old version and in that one the wolf has already eaten grandmother.
He's chopped her up, puts some blood in a bottle
and then Little Red comes in and the wolf says, as grandma, "Oh I've got some meat and some wine for you."
And so she eats it- so she eats her grandmother! It's really disgusting.
Then she gets in the bed with him and he's getting ready to eat her
and she says, " Oh I have to go, I have to go pee. " In some versions she has to poop.
and he says, "Well, do it in the bed," and she's like, "No, that's gross. I have to go outside."
and the wolf says, "well, you'll run away," and she says, "If you're afraid I'll run away,
tie a string around my foot". So he does. She goes outside, she unties the string, and she gets away.
Some of the pictures I have seen, in the really, really old versions, they're quite suggestive.
Some of the wood cuts from some
really, really, early books, like 1770 was the first one I saw here,
Little Red is in the bed with the wolf and she's kind of got her hand out sort of petting him, like, "Hey, Mr. Wolf!".
It just kind of makes me wonder,
what is the story really about? It's really fascinating.

William Carvalho to Arsenal: Juventus eye hijack despite Gunners talks - Liverpool boost - Duration: 2:34.
William Carvalho to Arsenal: Juventus eye hijack despite Gunners talks - Liverpool boost
Juventus are keen on Arsenal target William Carvalho. Juve are looking to bolster their ranks this summer and have drawn up a lengthy list of potential options.
Italian outlet Transfermarketweb report that the Serie A giants are keen on Liverpool's Emre Can, Paris St-Germain's Blaise Matuidi and Steven NZonzi of Sevilla.
Germany international Can remains their top target but Liverpool are working hard to secure a new deal for him. There is a similar situation with both Matuidi and NZonzi as well.
It is said that should Juventus miss out on these three players, they will turn to Sporting Lisbon star Carvalho. Carvalho has been linked with leaving Portugal for several years with Arsenal known to be long-term admirers of the 25-year-old.
The Gunners remain interested in him this summer and could launch a bid before the end of the transfer window. Carvalho is under contract at Sporting until June 2020 and has a £40m exit clause in his current deal.
Juventus want Liverpool star Emre Can. The Portugal international has been a key player for his club for the past four seasons and helped his country to a third place finish in this summer's Confederations Cup.
Portuguese outlet Record claimed earlier this month that Arsenal are preparing an offer for Carvalho.
It is said that the Gunners have held talks with Sporting this month and club president Bruno de Carvalho is willing to sanction a £27m deal. Carvalho has also reportedly prioritised a move to Arsenal over his other potential options.

Sgt. Doug Hatten: Master's degree in fighting a war - Duration: 1:23.
So I became Charlie Company's 2nd platoon medic and went out to the field on the 9th
of March 1969.
And the first guy to greet me was a guy that I learned would be Sgt.
Hatten.
And his hat was on crooked, his helmets on crooked.
He's got a tooth missing right here in front, and he talked real slow.
And shame on me, this is not the way I was raised.
I thought, "Lord, you put me in a life and death situation and this guy's supposed
to save my life.
Thank you very much."
Well a couple days later, I had discovered, because I'm a talker and tried to learn
and meet as many people as I could, Sgt.
Doug Hatten, which I didn't know his first name at the time.
Sgt.
Hatten was a high-school graduate.
Jim McCloughan was a college graduate with a degree.
But Sgt.
Hatten had a masters degree in fighting a war.
Jim McCloughan was a kindergartener.
So I always state that I was smart enough to know how dumb I was.
And I listened to everything that man told me.
And he's part of the reason why I'm sitting here talking to you.
I leaned on him.

GHD Platinum vs. Better Me Betty Hair Brush Straightener Comparison Review | English Subs - Duration: 9:22.
Hi, I'm Sophie. Welcome back.
Guess what I'm gonna share today?
Well, hair straighteners!
Recently I've used a very great hair straightener,
called Betty by Better Me.
The result is pretty comparable to my GHD flat iron.
Guess which part of my hair was straightened by GHD?
And which part by Better Me Betty?
Well, let's get into it.
Today I'm gonna do
a comparison review of the GHD flat iron and the Betty brush straightener.
The GHD flat iron is well known
for its straightening result.
Mine is the GHD platinum.
The hair brush straightener
is called Betty by Better Me.
Betty is a relatively new product.
I think that it's pretty comparable to my GHD styler.
Let me show you their comparison.
GHD platinum is the classic flat iron.
Clip part of the hair and straighten it.
Betty looks like a hair brush.
Comb the hair and straighten it.
Very magical, right?
The inside of the GHD styler feels like ceramic.
The outer edge of Betty feels like plastic.
And the inside feels like ceramic,
which is the actual heating part.
Let me show you how to use them.
Those two are powered on now.
Let me turn them on.
Press the power buttons.
The LED lights show that they are heating up.
GHD styler is ready now.
While Betty is still heating up.
OK. Betty is ready now.
It takes a bit longer for Betty to heat up.
But they are both pretty fast.
Let me split my hair into two parts.
My left part
is gonna be straightened by Betty.
My right part
by GHD platinum.
Let me use GHD first.
Basically split the hair into several sections,
clip it and use downward motion to straighten it.
I like to use fingers to comb through first.
and then use the flat iron.
Especially pay attention to the end of the hair.
After using it,
my hair feels straightened and smooth.
The heating temperature is quite high,
and my hair feels pretty hot after using it.
I feel that the flat iron could do some damage to the hair if I use it daily.
OK.
This is the straightening result by GHD.
Compare to my natural hair.
My natural hair is a bit frizzy, and the end is a bit curled.
My hair feels smooth and straightened after using GHD.
Let me use Betty now.
It is so easy to use Betty.
Just brush the hair like using a normal hair brush.
You have to comb through and detangle the hair before using Betty.
I'm focusing more on the end of the hair as it's a bit curled.
Betty is indeed amazing!
My hair feels very smooth and straightened after using it.
My hair feels not so hot compared to GHD.
So I figure it would not do that much damage to the hair.
It's very convenient to straighten the root of my hair.
GHD is not so convenient in this part,
as I'm concerned that GHD may burn me.
Final touches...
Let's see the result!
My left part was straightened by Betty.
Feels so smooth and great!
My right part by GHD.
I feel that they look pretty much the same.
Can you tell the difference?
Betty,
and GHD.
Can you tell?
Seriously, I can't tell the difference!
I like Betty more because of its easy use.
So convenient to straighten the hair by brushing it.
It's easy to use even for the back of the hair.
Just brush like this.
Bur for GHD flat iron,
I need to section the hair,
and clip through like this.
For the back of the hair,
it's not easy to use.
For the root of the hair,
it's not convenient for GHD.
In comparison, Betty can handle
whether the root or the end of the hair very easily.
Amazing!
The price difference is huge.
GHD is almost $250.
Betty is $79.99
3 times difference!
The only thing that GHD is better is that
it can also be used as a curler.
Just angle it like this and clip through the hair.
Betty can only be used as a straightener.
So if you are looking for a straightener,
I highly recommend Betty!
It's so convenient and easy to use.
And it does the job amazingly.
I really love it!
I may use Betty more in future.
Betty is created by a company called Better Me.
This company was founded by a group of women.
Their founder, Miranda,
is very kind.
She contacted me and introduced their company and the new product Betty.
I was very interested in Betty.
So she sent me a sample to try out.
This video is not sponsored.
I didn't receive money for making this video.
All my opinions are based on my true experience.
I really love Betty after trying it out.
So I highly recommend it!
If you're interested in buying it,
I have a $15 off coupon code for you.
I will put the coupon code and all the info in the description box down below.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this video.

The Head Of Boy Scouts Apologizes For Trump's Insane Speech To Children - Duration: 3:11.
By now I'm sure we're all familiar with Donald Trump's disgusting speech to the Boy Scouts
Jamboree earlier this week, where he decided to go off into political tirades, talk about
Obamacare and republicans and democrats, and got the crowd to boo Barack Obama and Hillary
Clinton, and at one point even started getting into a little bit of a sexual innuendo talk.
Well, on Thursday evening, the head of the Boy Scouts of America had enough of the constant
phone calls and emails and tweets from angry parents about the tone of Donald Trump's speech,
so he was forced to come out and issue a public apology for having Donald Trump come out and
speak in the manner in which he did.
The head of the Boy Scouts said that, "Look, it is not the intention of us to endorse any
candidate.
This invitation that we send out to the president each year is just part of a long-standing
tradition.
It doesn't matter who the person is, if it's a republican or democrat, we are basically
kind of required as tradition to send that invitation.
We personally don't care if they come or if they don't, but we have to send it."
He also apologized if Donald Trump's speech offended anybody, which judging from the reactions,
it clearly did.
You know, the Boy Scouts, for all of their faults, are supposed to represent values and
morals that they're instilling in these young men throughout the country, and Donald Trump's
speech did the exact opposite of that.
In fact, Donald Trump's life is the exact opposite of that.
Donald Trump himself embodies everything that the Boy Scouts are supposed to stand against:
laziness, arrogance, bullying, you know, the things that make people not like other people.
The things that make a person really just a piece of crap.
That is what Donald Trump is, and that is what this organization wants to distance itself
from.
Now again, they've done some horrible things in the past, I'm not defending the Boy Scouts
whatsoever.
I think it is a very backwards organization in many ways, especially with their views
on homosexuality.
But they, having to come out and apologize for the president, is a very big step, and
it's something that basically all Americans need to get used to hearing and seeing and
doing.
Donald Trump is a national embarrassment, but more importantly, Donald Trump is an international
embarrassment.
Every time he goes overseas, he does something that leaves Americans saying, "Oh my god."
And it's not going to stop.
It's not going to stop until he is finally removed from office, and until that day comes,
you better get used to practicing the words, "I'm sorry for whatever it was that Donald
Trump
did."

James McCloughan: Last two days of the battle - Duration: 3:00.
The second day, we lose our only other medic we got.
And that's Dan Shea, who was posthumously awarded the congressional Medal of Honor.
He was going about his 4th time when he was killed.
And I got him and got his body in and now I'm the only medic.
So I downed my pack near a tree and got all my pressure bandages and everything out of
there, put them in all the pockets that I had and I retreated into the perimeter and
now I start going out to get men.
I see a guy laying out there and he's near a trench line.
This guy's got a stomach wound.
Been shot in the stomach.
This is real serious.
I can't move him.
I've got to get bandages on him and get moistness on the bandages.
So I do.
I finally get him patched up and carry him back into the trench line, gently.
I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to carry this guy.
I can't throw him over my shoulders.
I've got to get him across the crossfire and I got to get him to the perimeter.
So I decide I'm going to carry him like a baby.
I picked the guy up like a baby and got him to safety.
Put him in a safe area.
Then another major wound happens and I crawl out.
A guy by the name of Kent Nielsen, a machine gunner, got shot through the shoulder, came
out the front.
I get him in, patch him up.
Leave them in a nice safe area.
I've got about 4 or 5 people here that are badly enough wounded that I wanted them as
safe as they could be and yet I could get back to them during the night.
Before long we're running low on ammo, the lieutenant calls for a blinking light because
he was going to try to get a helicopter in with a resupply of ammo.
Well nobody jumps up so I take the blinking light and literally low crawl out.
I'm prone position on my stomach, holding this blinking light, and these flashes are
going over the top of me.
And I think two things, "What is that?" and "Uh oh.
If they kick that ammunition out and try to hit this blinking light, it's going to land
on top of me.
I'm a dead guy."
Well they never were able to get in, so I was safe there.
I turned the blinking light off and crawled back.
Out there on the front line, all of a sudden I realize what was coming over me.
There's an RPG round over where I left my pack behind those two trees.
I see the muzzle come out and I take a grenade.
I flip the handle off, count to two, and I throw it right over by this tree.
PEW!
And the muzzle goes up in the air like that.
Next morning I find him out there.
And he had his hand on the trigger of the RPG and he was going to fire a round into
our area.
So I got him just in time.

Truth in Taxation - Duration: 1:15.
The annual budget for Utah's capital city in 2017-18 includes an emphasis on essential
services and personnel.
The City Council passed a budget this year with support for long-term investment in water and sewer
services and additional support for the City library system; also aid to the homeless.
The $273 million general fund budget is the operating budget for delivering services like
police, fire, and parks.
The budget is funded primarily by the City's ongoing general revenue sources such as property
and sales taxes.
Council Members say public input on the budget has been invaluable as residents have spoken
at public hearings and sent in comments through email, phone calls, and social media.
Three public hearings were held, starting in May
This year's deliberations ended with a property tax increase for the ongoing maintenance at
the City's eight library branches.
A Truth in Taxation Hearing, a public hearing required by the state, will be held on August
8 at 7 p.m. at City Hall and completes the annual budget process.

James McCloughan: The first day in Vietnam - Duration: 2:02.
It's the day that they're announcing where everybody's going, and they go through every
one of us in that company.
They say our name and where we're going next.
And they got to Jim McCloughan, "Private James McCloughan, Southeast Asia, Vietnam."
And I'm thinking, "He must've been wrong.
He's gotta be wrong.
I'm staying here."
So they got all the way through it and I walked up to the company commander there and I said,
"Sir, you said James McCloughan was going to Vietnam.
I think I'm staying here."
And he looked at me and he knew, I didn't know he knew, but he knew, he said, "I'm
sorry private, but a regular army man wanted your job.
You're a draftee.
And he got it.
You're going to Vietnam."
So I'm disappointed at that particular point.
Things just went on and ok this is what I'm gonna do.
I got right into the right frame of mind that I will serve my country.
I didn't volunteer to do it.
But they asked me to do it.
So that's what I'll do.
So I became Charlie Company's 2nd Platoon medic and went out to the field on the 9th
of March, 1969.
I got initiated the very first day.
We hit our first ambush, had a man die, had a few people to patch up, and I shot a man.
That's a lot to digest on your first day of knowing where your at now and what you're
going to be facing.
But I didn't know I was going to face anything like Tam Ky and LZ East, which were 2 of the
big battles that I faced.

Laura Branigan - "Touch" Album Promo Interview [cc] - CNN Showbiz Today (1987) - Duration: 2:03.
'Falls apart like shattered glass'
Laura Branigan hasn't been on the charts in a couple of years
But, that's probably because she hasn't made a record in a couple of years
But, she has one now
Her fifth album, 'Touch'
Her single 'Shattered Glass' is now on the charts and Cheryl Washington spoke to the singer about her comeback
The first consideration Laura Branigan made when she chose songs for her new album 'Touch' was emotion
Her latest single, 'Shattered Glass' is a perfect example
of how Laura Branigan feels when her lover goes too far in the relationship
'You keep running hot and blowing cold'
'And, everything you hold just falls apart like shattered glass'
Branigan not only feels the songs she sings
but, she experiences them through acting
With singing, you know, every song you sing is a story
And, in order to have the people feel it, the audience
you have to feel it yourself
For me, singing and acting, you know, are very instinctive
It's easy for me to let myself go in that-
when I'm, you know, inside of the song or acting
Branigan took a 2 year leave of absence from recording and touring
to appear in an Australian movie
But, she maintains, singing is her preference, despite a rocky start
I had gotten a lot of rejections from record companies
I sort of had this big voice, so I didn't really have time to find myself
or find out what my sound was
I just knew that I wanted to touch people
Branigan has touched a lot of people with her million selling hits
And, she hopes the current album will have the same results as the first
Musically, how do you think you've grown since your very first 'Branigan" album?
Now I really think that this album is the first
album where I've really come into my own
And, I've, I have-
This is exactly the way I want to sound
That Laura Branigan sound can be heard in concerts across the country and in Europe

Review Of The Remake Of The Planet Of The Apes And Also The Reboot Trilogy - Duration: 19:49.
What will he find out there, doctor?
His destiny.
Oh, my God.
They did it.
They actually remade "Planet Of The Apes"!
Starring Mark Whalberg?!
You maniacs!
You made it up.
Oh...
God damn you!
God damn you all to hell!
This is Movie Night!
Hello, and welcome to Movie Night - I'm your host, Jonathan Paula.
Tonight, as promised - I'll be taking a look at the four remaining films in the "Planet
Of The Apes" franchise, which will include updated reviews of "Rise" and "Dawn", which
I first featured back when they were initially released.
And I even changed my score on one, so stay tuned!
First up though, let's talk about the remake.
They should have left it alone.
Released in the summer of 2001 - this $100 million dollar sci-fi action film is another
ambitious mistake from director Tim Burton - which somehow managed more than a quarter-billion
in profit.
When an Air Force astronaut crash lands on a mysterious planet he inadvertently inspires
a revolution between primitive humans and their talking-ape masters.
A baby-faced Marky-Mark Wahlberg leads the group as best he can, but he's drastically
out of his depth in this big budget adventure - reciting corny one-liners like, "Never send
a monkey to do a man's job." and, "I'm going to go get my chimp."
Tim Roth portrays a sinister chimpanzee military villain - who spends most of his time shouting
angrily or jumping around the set like some amped-up parkour artist.
It wouldn't be a Tim Burton film without an appearance from his longtime partner Helena
Bonham Carter, so she's here, playing an overly sexualized chimp, to boot.
She develops a somewhat romantic relationship with Wahlberg that's not only unsettling,
but largely unearned.
Michael Clarke Duncan appears as a giant gorilla, and Paul Giamatti is a meek little orangutan...
because of course they are.
Elsewhere Estella Warren and Kris Kristofferson are wasted as totally superfluously human-characters
that have literally zero purpose.
And last but not least, is original "Apes" star Charlton Heston - who's uncredited single
scene cameo is actually pretty cool... even though you'd hardly know it was him if not
for a familiar line of dialogue.
Despite its rushed production - the PG-13 rated film doest boast some particularly excellent
make-up, costumes, and more naturalistic ape-moment.
And from a technical standpoint the 119 minute film is competently shot, and well edited.
A few neat action sequences might impress younger audiences, but most of the material
here has been broached in better ways in better films.
Contrasting this "Planet Of The Apes" against the influential sci-fi classic may seem a
bit unfair, but by virtue of its very existence, it brought it upon itself.
Conceptually, the basic framework of Peirre's Boulle's novel is here, but Burton's interpretation
is wildly different than the 1968 film - which is perhaps why he insists the film is actually
a "re-imagination", rather than a true remake.
Gone is the subtly, patience, or nuance.
Every location is draped in shadows and cluttered with decoration of gothic inspiration.
In other words, this "Planet" is yet another Tim Burton fun house, irrespective of its
believability or diegetic connection to a world controlled by apes.
And almost the entire story seems to take place at night.
This update also adds a lot of unnecessary prologue - giving backstory to a narrative
that doesn't require it, and introducing characters never to be seen again.
The fact that humans can talk (and the apes are aware they can) completely undercuts the
de-evolution implications of earlier movies.
Relocating the titular world to a non-Earth planet hollows out the entire conceit that
made the original series so powerful, replaced instead with a tired time travel plot ripped
straight from an episode of "Star Trek".
Spoiler alert here: In an attempt to preserve the memorable twist-ending of the original
film, the screenwriters foolishly concocted a new conclusion - which sees Wahlberg traveling
back to a present-day version of Earth in which all humans have been directly substituted
for Apes.
It makes less sense than tits on a bull, and thanks to this picture's deservedly poor reviews
- will never be explained in a sequel.
Whereas the Statue Of Liberty reveal remains one of the best endings in the history of
science fiction, this Lincoln Memorial moment is almost certainly the worst.
Fans of Burton's trademark style might appreciate the film's visual aesthetic - but unless you're
an "Apes" completionist - this film is definitely one you should skip.
"Planet Of The Apes" is an insult to its namesake, and a wholly pointless remake.
But let's hear some of your insults from the YouTube comments!
Calling it unnecessary, awful, and scattered - we all agreed - this is a very LAME film.
Next up, a "re-imagining" that actually does things correctly, "RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE
APES."
An auspicious revival.
This $93 million dollar science fiction film grossed nearly half a billion following its
worldwide release in August of 2011.
Director Rupert Wyatt borrows concepts and styles from earlier entries and other films
to craft a compelling story.
Although resembling the premise of the series's fourth installment, 1972's "Conquest Of The
Planet Of The Apes", this film isn't a proper remake, but rather a re-envisioning of the
ideas set forth in the original five films.
In fact, its narrative structure much more closely parallels "Deep Blue Sea" than anything
else.
The PG-13 rated plot follows scientist James Franco, who inadvertently creates a drug that
boosts simian brain capacity when searching for a cure to Alzheimer's.
Later, his pet ape (with his newly boosted brain power) helps start an evolution revolution,
when he frees his species from a harsh Primate Sanctuary.
Unlike the original, there is very little here in way of political commentary - the
ape revolt is hardly analogous to issues with society.
Even still though, the story is fascinating, and well-told - with great performances by
most of the cast.
I say most, since Freida Pinto contributes very little as Franco's love-interest.
It's not her fault though, the script just doesn't give her much development.
John Lithgow is fantastic however, portraying the Alzheimer's-stricken father - who bounces
from forgetful frustration to excited fatherhood when the effects of the drug begin transforming
him and his simian housemate.
Franco himself does solid work as the gentle, but ambitious scientist - but feels out of
place in the overly serious story.
Last but not least, Andy Serkis's CGI-assisted portrayal of house-ape turned super-smart
rebellion leader Caesar is a remarkable achievement, and the real hero of the narrative.
Even without speaking dialogue for most of the picture, he undergoes a tremendously satisfying
arc, with real depth
and humanity.
The 110-minute film sprinkles in plenty of terrific references and throw-backs to the
original "Apes".
Some are subtle, while others are pretty overt; like the repetition of Heston's iconic "Take
your stinking paw off me, you damn dirty ape!", which is met with a similarly earth-shattering
response - Caesar's first spoken word.
More or less a cautionary tale about the dangers of oppressing our animal friends, and perhaps
a warning about scientific ambition - "Rise" feels a bit unbalanced.
The pacing is a careful march towards an inevitable outcome... until the final act when everything
is hurried for a thrilling set-piece on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Whereas the 1968 film was groundbreaking for its use with prosthetic makeup - this big-budget
reboot similarly impresses with astonishingly lifelike motion-capture technology, which
scored "Rise" it's only Academy Award nomination.
It likely won't be heralded as a "classic" any time soon, but it's thoroughly entertaining
from start to finish.
A wonderful update to a decades-old franchise that should appeal to old fans as well as
newcomers - it's also a surprisingly rewatchable film that sets-up its superior sequel quite
well.
"Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes", a is a fresh reboot with impressive effects.
I thought it was GREAT.
Next tonight, my updated thoughts on "DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES".
An excellent pay-off.
Directed by Matt Reeves, this eighth film in the surprisingly long-running "Apes" franchise,
was released in July of 2014 - and is the second film in the reboot trilogy.
Produced on a mammoth $235 million budget, this science fiction action film still pulled
in an impressive $710 million in worldwide proceeds.
Ten years after a deadly disease wiped out most of mankind, a growing community of genetically
evolved apes and a band of human survivors attempt to co-exist.
In other words, "Dawn" builds off the events set-up in "Rise" in wonderful and satisfying
ways.
Motion-capture extraordinaire, Andy Serkis returns in the lead role, as Caesar, the highly
intelligent leader of the apes.
Having built a community of talking, family oriented primates, Serkis is confronted with
the responsibilities of diplomacy, as he advises his tribe, signing, "If we go to war, we could
lose all we've built...", before finishing his thought out-loud by softly saying, "Home.
Family.
Future."
As an entirely CGI-character, he is able to effortlessly bring an emotional and human
performance to a decidedly non-human character - most of this accomplished with a furrow
of his brow, or a glance from his deep green eyes.
The attention to his character design is impressive, like a scene where Caesar pushes through a
subway station's turnstile - while all the other apes hop over it.
It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it detail that illustrates his human upbringing and advanced
intelligence.
Commendably, this is one of the only big-budget films that uses American Sign Language (or
at least, an ape-inspired variant) as one of its primary on-screen languages.
"Dawn" does not shy away from using subtitles.
Karin Konoval continues to exhibit emotional depth as Caesar's orange orangutan friend,
while the treacherous Koba is now played by Toby Kebbell in a menacing performance.
Unfortunately, no human characters from "Rise" return, but James Franco is referenced in
a particularly touching scene.
Instead, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, and Keri Russell are introduced as hopeful, but cautious
humans, who have survived horrible conditions only to reluctantly be thrust into a war with
their violent primate counterparts.
For reasons I can't quite articulate, Oldman just doesn't seem well-suited to this part,
and Russell is underutilized to a criminal extent.
Clarke however impresses, imbuing his character with much needed patience and bravery.
We're introduced to the growing conflict between man and ape when a scout party unwittingly
sparks a dramatic stand-off, with both sides on
a hair-trigger.
The tension that builds between these two groups is the entire driving force of the
carefully paced film, which should leave most audiences breathless as it unravels.
Throughout the 131-minute film, I found myself rooting for the impossible; the peaceful co-existence
of two dominant species.
We know it can't happen - but we still want it to.
A scene where the uneasy alliance finally restores power, allowing a stereo to play
music again for the first time in years is an emotionally powerful moment.
That is of course until you remember cars have radios too - which shouldn't have been
affected by a defunct power-grid.
The first "Apes" film shot in the taller 16:9 frame brilliantly captures both the lush forest
areas of the American north west, as well as the haunting desolation of a ruined San
Francisco.
The imagery of an abandoned and moss-covered city center is very invocative of Naughty
Dog's "The Last Of Us" video game - in all the best ways.
The visual effects perfectly blend the authentic locations and people with digital creatures
that are just as lifelike.
For their efforts, Peter Jackson's WETA Digital scored a well-earned Academy Award nomination.
The PG-13 rated picture doesn't have many twists or surprises, but the final climactic
battle between apes, humans, and other apes is a true spectacle to behold... as seeing
an angry ape charge on horseback while firing a machine gun is truly terrifying.
An extended POV-shot that's fixed to a mounted tank as it plows through a hectic battlefield
is a particular highlight.
Michael Giacchino's score provides a deep and drum like rhythm that further emphasizes
the seriousness of the realistic narrative, but it also includes occasional musical callbacks
to the original score's more whimsical style.
Although we're left with a satisfying conclusion, some plot threads are appropriately left unresolved
- setting up "War For The Planet Of The Apes" rather nicely.
Covering themes of trust, community, and betrayal, this is a touching story mixed with captivating
and exciting action.
An excellent summer blockbuster that improves with every viewing "Dawn Of The Planet Of
The Apes" is the best "Apes" yet, and is worthy of my highest score.
I'm re-rating this an AMAZING.
Finally tonight, my review for "WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES."
A triumphant conclusion.
The third picture in the "Apes" reboot series was released nationwide on July 14, 2017 - earning
back its $150 million dollar budget within its first two weekends.
The narrative, penned by returning director Matt Reeves and Mark Bomback picks up two
years after "Dawn" left off - where ape leader Caesar sets off on a quest into human territory
to settle a personal score.
The first two films in this updated trilogy were only appetizers for what will be long
heralded as a landmark achievement in motion capture technology.
Andy Serkis gives the performance of his career as the hardened chimpanzee leader; forced
to seek vengeance after suffering a staggering loss.
He motivates his troops by reiterating his species' motto, "Apes.
Together.
Strong."
The visuals effects by New Zealand's Weta Digital that bring this primate to life are
utterly sublime.
The facial expressions, physical mannerisms, and deep green eyes all evoke a truly emotional,
and human performance.
If any mo-cap character is going to break the proverbial 'glass ceiling' and score an
Academy Award nomination - this is it.
Karin Konoval returns as well, to portray Caesar's trusted orangutan adviser "Maurice"
- who's calm and measured perspective often helps reign in his leader's more brash decisions.
Steve Zahn plays "Bad Ape", a quirky hermit that Caesar's expedition picks up along the
way.
He has a few funny, comic-relief type moments - but they feel decidedly out of place in
the otherwise serious film.
But the implication of a talking ape not from Caesar's initial uprising is a big one, as
it signals the possibility of an entire "planet of the apes" - instead of just a small village
outside San Francisco.
The only real human character of note in "War" is Woody Harrelson as the villainous and uncompromising
"Colonel" - who doesn't hesitate to execute his own men when they show signs of disease.
Echoing shades of Marlon Brando, he delivers a long and emotionally distant monologue about
his son and the tough decisions he's made.
Remarking on the pending war between apes, humans, and his own faction of the military
Harrelson punctuates this speech by stating, "All of human history has come to this moment."
It is a powerful scene, and a real highlight in the 140 minute feature.
The increasingly busy Michael Giacchino provides one of his best scores this decade; although
"Star Trek" and "Up" (both from 2009) remain my favorite works from him.
Blending driving strings, high-pitched woodwinds, heavy drums, soft pianos, and a chanting choir
- Giacchino has composed a truly haunting score that occasionally feels almost ethereal
and patriotic.
It is a beautiful counterpart to the impeccable effects and flawless cinematography.
Even without characters populating the frame, the environments alone are stunning to see;
from the lush Redwood forests to the snow-covered mountains in the north.
Giacchino opens the film with a particularly neat drums-only rendition of the 20th Century
fanfare... which then cuts to on-screen text that helps bring the audience up to speed
on the events that came before.
Even though each of these entries stands on its own rather well - consistent themes and
characters allow them to mesh together extremely effectively.
Living up to its title, the opening ten minutes showcase a vicious and violent woodland battle
between human special forces and resilient apes dug into their Redwood hideout.
Gunfire, explosions, spears, and battle-cries rupture the speakers with a loud and enveloping
sound-mix.
This first chapter is one of the most impressive action scenes of any war movie, and instantly
elevates this picture above its 1970s-era counterpart, "Battle For The Planet Of The
Apes".
The PG-13 rated picture has some tonal and pacing issues towards the middle, as it drastically
shifts from a war movie to a prisoner-of-war movie.
I didn't particularly care for a few of the more convenient plot twists, either.
After 49 years though, these characters and stories are still impressive, and consistently
entertain - even paying homage to earlier films with clever moments and dialogue references.
A must-watch just for the terrifically well-realized motion capture effects, "War For The Planet
Of The Apes" is a thrilling example of why this trilogy is 'together, strong'.
And here's what you had to say about it.
Some called it the best yet, while others felt it was a downgrade.
Your scores averaged to a 9/10.
I agree, I felt this was an AWESOME film.
Now, some final thoughts on the entire franchise.
When "War" finishes its box office run, the "Planet Of The Apes" will have grossed over
$2 billion worldwide, an impressive accomplishment considering two of the nine films didn't even
reach double-digit millions.
There's something inherently invocative about the core concept of these stories, from the
B-movie style of title to the themes of equality and revolution that continue to resonate.
Or maybe people just like seeing animals wear human clothes.
Whatever its appeal - it's clearly stood the test of time.
Despite some stumbles in the middle, this has proven to be one resilient franchise with
dozens of memorable moments and characters.
"Planet Of The Apes" showed us the template on creating a truly great reboot... as well
as what not to do when attempting a remake.
It's rare for a film series to reach nine entries.
And it's almost unheard of for the ninth to be as good, if not better than the rest.
While "War" wraps up Caesar's three-picture arc remarkably well - the series keeps moving
towards that desolate desert universe established in the 1968 version, leaving the door open
for future installments.
I, for one, would love to see another sequel or two that jumps the story forward to when
the astronauts from the Icarus spacecraft (deliberately teased in "Rise", don't forget!)
return to Earth to find the thriving ape civilization Caesar helped establish.
Seeing an updated adaptation of Pierre Boulle's novel - using today's visual effects capabilities
- is an appealing way to come full circle on the half-century old franchise.
I'm thinking "Return To The Planet Of The Apes" would be a perfect title for such a
follow-up.
Are you writing this down, 20th Century Fox?
Until that 10th picture, which is reportedly already in the early planning stages - we'll
just have to speculate.
That does it for now, but next week I'll be collecting some of my previously written and

Establishing a Road Map for the World Refugee Council - Duration: 2:12.
Refugees have human rights.
And too often — and in too many places — those rights are not being honoured.
Perhaps most importantly of all, we have to begin to change the dialogue,
the narrative in the political world,
so that we are not creating refugees as somehow criminals crossing our borders,
when, in fact, they are people who are honestly looking for a new place to lay their head.
We're bringing together people from all different parts of the globe
— North, South, young, old —
bringing together this very varied group of people, and realizing that
they are all committed to doing something to improve the refugee system, and to making sure
we properly honour the human rights interests of refugees.
I think that we used these last couple of days to begin detailing what were the priorities.
One of the serious issues we discovered while talking to members of the council
who come from countries that are hosting refugees is that, under the present system,
they may only get 15, 20, 30 percent of the resources that they need.
And here's the contradiction — it's global in its impact,
but the management continues to shrink behind borders.
We'll be working to ensure that it all hangs together;
the key will be that it will be independent.
It will attempt to look at these issues in a practical, but over the horizon, way.
It will be, I think, one of the defining issues,
and right now we need a better governance to make it work.

The TRUTH about RESPONSIBILITY... - Duration: 1:00.
- All right, I got another one for you guys
before you go to bed tonight.
It's Monday, get your week started right.
Earlier today on my Instagram stories,
I was talking about responsibility
and what that ACTUALLY means.
And my discovery is that it means something SO SIMPLE.
It's RESPONSE-ABILITY.
It's your ABILITY, my ability TO RESPOND.
You see, what happens when we DEFLECT responsibility.
Responsibility, sometimes we hear it
and we get like, "Ewww, that sounds like a lot of work..."
When we DEFLECT RESPONSIBILITY in our CAREERS,
we're deflecting OWNERSHIP,
we're giving our "ABILITY to RESPOND" to somebody else
to take care of our career for us.
When we DEFLECT RESPONSIBILITY in a RELATIONSHIP,
we're GIVING CONTROL to the other party,
the OTHER PERSON in that relationship,
they have control over us.
And you could end up in a physically
or emotionally abusive relationship as a result.
So here's the thing:
This week I want you guys to take control
of your "RESPONSE-ABILITY".
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!

Here's WHY words are MORE THAN WORDS... - Duration: 0:58.
- A friend of mine once said,
"Hey man, you can't sell the 'fairy dust' forever,"
and I think there's a lot of truth to that.
You might be receiving some of these messages,
some of these words and saying to yourself,
"Well shoot, that's all well and good.
"You got some motivation, maybe you give me something
"I can actually apply in my life, BUT...what next?
"How the heck is that supposed to help me?
or "What are you actually trying to convey?
"How are you trying to impact me beyond JUST your words?"
Well, look, listen.
It's NOT "just words".
You see, there are "just words" in songs.
There are "just words" in the voices coming from people
that you know, love, and trust...
From when you were growing up until the person you are now,
to the person you're becoming...
Those words INFLUENCE you,
and anything that's not life-GIVING is life-TAKING.
I only wanna GIVE YOU LIFE through my "words",
so go on and give somebody else
some life today with your words.
Choose wisely.

THE WHOLE TRUTH about what you need to be successful... - Duration: 1:01.
You just gotta have fun!
You just gotta help people...
You just gotta do what makes you feel stress-free.
And there are people in your life
that are gonna tell you that you need to do X, Y, and Z
so that you can accomplish being a lawyer,
so that you can accomplish being a pediatrician,
so that you can accomplish being an orthopedic surgeon,
or even being a professional athlete.
There are people that are gonna tell you
that you need to meet these qualifications
in order to do that, and that is PART of the truth,
but the WHOLE TRUTH, the OTHER half,
is that WHO YOU ARE is what's gonna take you there.
Meaning...not just "being a lawyer",
but BEING THE PERSON that wants
to DEFEND OTHER PEOPLE'S equal OPPORTUNITY.
That is WHAT YOU BELIEVE.
So when people tell you "what you need to do",
just remember that's only HALF.
That's only HALF OF THE TRUTH.
The other part is you need to remember
WHY you're doing it and that YOU WERE MADE TO DO IT.
