- A reading from the first Book of Kings.
The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night.
God said, "ask something of me, and I will give it to you."
Solomon answered, "O Lord, my God,
"You have made me Your servant,
"king to succeed my father, David,
"but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.
"I serve You, in the midst of the people
"whom You have chosen.
"A people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.
"Give Your servant, therefore, an understanding heart,
"to judge Your people and to distinguish right from wrong.
"For who is able to govern this vast people of Yours?"
The Lord was pleased that Solomon made this request.
So God said to him, "Because you have asked for this,
"not for a long life for yourself,
"nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies,
"but for understanding, so that you may know what is right,
"I do as you requested.
"I give you a heart so wise and understanding,
"that there has never been anyone like you up to now,
"and after you, there will come no-one to equal you."

"is like a treasure buried in a field,
"which a person finds and hides again,
"and out of joy, goes and sells all that he has,

"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven
"is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.
"When he finds a pearl of great price,
"he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven
"is like a net thrown into the sea,
"which collects fish of every kind.
"When it is full, they haul it ashore
"and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
"What is bad, they throw away.
"Thus, it will be at the end of the age.
"The angels will go out
"and separate the wicked from the righteous,
"and throw them into the fiery furnace,
"where there'll be wailing and grinding of teeth.
"Do you understand all these things?"
They answered, "Yes."
And He replied, "Then every scribe
"who has been instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven
"is like the head of a household,
"who brings from his store room,
"both the new and the old."
The Gospel of the Lord.
- [Crowd] Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
- When we think of somebody wise,
sometimes we can have a picture of maybe an elderly man
with a long, white beard, sitting in a rocking chair,
and uttering sayings like,
"A penny saved is a penny earned."
But biblical wisdom is much more, is practical wisdom,
it's dealing with the right and wrong,
and the wise way to live our life.
And so, in that first reading from the Book of Kings,
when we heard about Solomon's dream,
and how God said to him, "Ask from me whatever you want."
Just imagine having a dream like that,
God saying, "Ask something of me and I will give it to you."
What would we ask for?
It's an interesting thing to think about.
But for Solomon, who was a youth, a young person,
he said the unthinkable:
Lord, give me an understanding heart.
To be a great ruler, and to not ask for riches,
or a long life, or anything.
But asking for an understanding heart, from a young person,
showed that Solomon was wise beyond his years.
He wants an understanding heart,
not riches, not even perfect knowledge,
but an understanding heart,
because the understanding heart is what God has for us.
And so Solomon wants to reflect the love of God.
And when we think about it, in these past few weeks,
we've been hearing so much about the Kingdom of Heaven.
And the Kingdom of Heaven is the kingdom of love,
it's the kingdom of God's wisdom,
it's the kingdom filled with understanding hearts.
That's what Heaven's about.
Heaven's not filled with scholars of the law
and religious zealots,
or those who only know objective right and wrong,
but those who have hearts that are understanding.
Those who have hearts
that don't rise in quick judgment of others,
but look so that they can be understood,
so that they can understand others.
An understanding heart, that is the fine pearl.
That is the buried treasure.
An understanding heart means that the Kingdom of God
is present in the here and now.
And so when we live in God's love,
when we ask the Lord to give us an understanding heart,
God will certainly do that,
in God's way and in God's time.
And we hope and pray then,
that with that understanding heart,
that we will then reflect the love of the Lord in our lives.
We think about it in Paul's letter to the Corinthians,
we hear a lot of times at weddings,
it's in chapter 13, he says,
"Oh, if I speak in human and angelic tongues,
"but have not love, I'm a noisy gong."
So speaking at people that can speak
and give you all the wisdom of the world
and even all the wisdom of faith,
but without love, it's nothing.
It's a noisy gong, it's useless.
So we pray then,
that the Lord give us an understanding heart,
continue to give us an understanding heart.
Because with that understanding heart,
we will reflect the love of God,
and others will recognize that.
And when the love of God is made known in our lives,
we are making the Kingdom a reality in the here and now.
The fine pearl, the buried treasure,
is found right in our very hearts.
Together we profess our faith using the Apostle's Creed.
