Hi guys, welcome to everydayIdraw.
In the last video you were suggesting that
I should work on the frame composition
better, which I did. And I really hope it
worked, because I'm no professional as
you might tell. I've decided to choose
this bald red lips today just in case, if
I might, you know,
trick you with them. And you will not
notice, that the composition is not ideal.
So anyway, let's hope this red lipstick
will stay on my mouth, and will not
transfer to my teeth, which you know, you
never know.
Nevertheless. If it will transfer, please
try to listen to this video nevertheless,
because the topic I'm about to discuss
with you today is really, really, really
important and crucial. I've actually
decided to make a video about this,
because when I was in St. Petersburg,
I've met a girl who asked me about this. And
she seemed really uncomfortable about
this question. At that moment I was
thinking like: why would you... you know,
compare yourself to others. It's so
obvious.
But, you know, the next day I did it. I did
this mistake of comparing myself to
others, and I cried for like legit hour. But
I will talk about it a bit later. So you
can see. Ah! I just want to remind you,
that everything I say here, on the
channel, is as per usual, my own opinion
in this state of mind and life I'm in
right now. And, you know, maybe next year
I will tell you something different. But
right here and right now
this is what I truly think and what
I truly try to incorporate into my life as
well. So, when you compare yourself to
others this is just, you know, a normal
reaction that I guess we are being
taught maybe at school, I don't know. This
is what I think most of us usually do, or
at least have a tendency to do. If you do so
as human beings, we are very self-centered,
if we do something, we automatically
think, that everybody else around us
pretty much do the same thing. If you
compare yourself to others, you
automatically think, that other people
compare themself to others and make
decisions. And this is where
I think the problem is. Because at this
point you start to be very uncertain
about yourself, and maybe you lose
confidence. ... When we do this, when we meet
other fellow artists, instead of being
friendly to them and being really open,
and trying to help and maybe sharing
some kind of information, we feel, that
there is some kind of, you know, really
bloody competition between us and them,
because it's like either us or them
lower or higher on the scale of
comparison. When we do it like that, we
tend to be really closed and you know, if
you'd learn something new about
composition, you think like: "Oh my god,
everybody surrounding me are my
bloody enemies, so I will never share
this piece of information with them!"
You know, nobody wants to communicate with
this kind of person. I believe, you know
what I'm talking about. This is actually
stupid, because you cannot really close
some information inside. We live in the
time of Internet. So everything will be
all over the internet in couple of days.
So it's really hard to keep a secret, you
guys. When you compare yourself to others,
it has no positive outcome. Maybe you
think it has, but when you look deeper
into it, it doesn't. Because you either
are better than somebody, that you are
comparing yourself to... It doesn't really
make you motivated to do stuff. You think
like: "Oh well, you know, I'm in a good
position and better than this person. So,
wuuhh, might as well take a break!"
Or if this person is better than you, as you
think, you start to stress out, and you
think like: "Oh my god, I really am so bad,
and I've ended up here because I was not
good enough,
did not work enough!" Even if it gives you
a little bit of a kick, this is not a
really good place to work and to start
doing something amazing and creative.
Because you feel guilt and you feel
shame. And you know, as you can tell, these
feelings are not particularly really
good for your creative self, when you
need to let yourself go and come up with
amazing decisions and ideas. I do have
one recommendation to you. And I'm not
saying that you should not compare
yourself. But please, compare yourself to
yourself in the past. This is the only
method that I believe gives you really
true motivation to go on and on and on.
When you compare yourself to
yourself in the past, you almost all the
time see some kind of movement forward.
And this is why, I think, that maybe
filming your sketchbooks, like I do
sketchbook tours here on channel or
keeping your old work and not throwing
it away, will really help you in the long
run. Because next year, when you will feel
down, and you will sit and think like: "Oh
man... haven't done anything... what am I
doing with my life... should probably go
and get some work in convenience-store."
Not that I'm saying, that work in
convenience store is bad. If you work in
Japanese convenience-store, that's
amazing, yay to you, I really loved it
there. When you will see what you did last
year, you will see how much have you
learned actually, because when you do
this continuously, it's not like one day
you are really bad, and the next day
you're a super amazing talented person.
It doesn't really happen overnight. So
this is really... As, you know, as they say:
"Fast is slow, but constant." This is,
I think, a perfect description to drawing,
or maybe doing sports or yoga, or
whatever it is that you do. Because you
take baby steps all the time, but in the
end you really made it this far. And this
is amazing. So, when you look at yourself
in the past, you can say like: "Well, you
know, I did a good job, so I can probably
go and have a chocolate." It's actually
always a good time for a chocolate,
I think. But this is what I try to do every
day: no matter how I did, just to make
something really nice for myself, like a
present, or something. It might be a bath,
which doesn't really work for me, since
I live in apartment with the shower only.
So this is sad... Oh man, I love those bath
bombs from Lush stuff. This is so sad.
They should probably think of something
for shower people.
Nevermind. Like chocolate will do, as
well. Or maybe I will take a break during
the day and go for a short walk... There is
actually a fly. I don't know, can you tell
it on the camera? Probably not.
Do something really nice to yourself. Going
back to my legit one hour crying session.
You know, as I was talking before in my
motivation video, and please, check it out
in the cards. I believe it will help you
a lot. Sometimes and it's perfectly
normal,
we do something, we do good, we feel
motivated we do better, and then, one day
we just fail hard. We feel, we tend to feel
like we did go back to the beginning and
even lower. And that we are bad people.
So, you know the feeling. Just go check
this video. So, this is what happened to
me. After this St. Petersburg meetup,
I told this girl, the subscriber,
We discuss it a lot: compare
yourself to yourself in the past, this is
the only amazing strategy, because when
you actually do that, you feel like you
are constantly learning. And you feel
good about yourself. And since we are
still self-centered egoistic people,
you think that others do the same.
So you want to encourage other people to
do better. And you want to share
knowledge, to help other people to become
better. And to make their comparison to
to themselves in the past nicer. So,
you become this open and really cool
person to talk to, because you always
share new stuff, and you want to help
everybody to grow. But then,
after the meetup, I came home, and I was
browsing through Artstation, and I went
to take a look at one of my favorite
artist Alexander Nickonov. And I will
leave links down below to his account
in the description box. And, as
I usually do, I find a cool person and then
I take a look at their
subscription, like who are they
subscribed to... I just fell into this sea
of amazing art, amazing colors,
compositions, ideas. And everything was so
good, and on such a high level, that
I felt overwhelmed. And I started to think:
"I will never be this good. I mean, look
at me, and look at those people. They are
so amazing and cool. I just can't. This is
not possible. This is just, you know, no
chocolate were ever help me." And I cried,
ahhh....
This was such state of devastation. And
I remember feeling so empty, and so scared.
Like why am I even doing this, if I will
never be able to reach this level. But,
again, I've made a video about fear.
I think maybe two weeks ago, or last week.
So check it out as well. I did this
method of working with fear, and
deconstructing my fear, after I cried my
eyes out, for an hour. That's okay.
Sometimes we tend to snap, eat french
fries, or compare yourself to others. But
that's totally fine. And don't judge
yourself for doing that. Just remember,
after that, usually, most of the time, you
have to compare yourself to yourself in
the past. And it, I believe, it will help
you a lot. And it will make your life a
lot easier. This is it for today guys.
I really hope, that this video was helpful.
And if you have any questions, or
struggles, or fears, that you are fighting,
please, share them in the comments down
below. Give me an idea for the future
video, and I would be super glad to help
you. You know, because I'm comparing
myself to myself in the past, this whole
channel is about me getting better. And
just four luls
I will live a link to one of the first
interview with an illustrator, that I did.
And it was probably during the first
half year of this channel. And I was
interviewing Anya Mopka. And you probably
know her. Again, links will be listed down
below. I drew so poorly and my channel
was so weird, and my camera was bad, and
my sound was bad. So, when I asked her to
film a interview with me via Skype, or
anything else, she said like: "No... No."
And I totally understand her. She answered my
questions over Facebook. So I had a text,
that I could use. And I decided to
film a video. This was so bad. Man,
sometimes I just take a look at this
video, and I silently cry. She had blue
hair at that time, so I did go to
Halloween store, and I bought myself a
shiny Halloween wig. But it was not a
wig made from hair. It was a wig made
from plastic strips,
you know, shiny ones, that you put on
Christmas tree. It was legitimately awful
and disgusting. But I did the interview
and I posted the video. And you can check
it out in cards. I did it in Russian. So,
even if you will not understand a word,
that's totally fine. Just check out how
I look in this. Yeah... This is it for today
guys. So, if you like my video, please
subscribe to this channel, leave a link #$&^
leave a comment down below, and like me
on social media. I post my pictures in
stages and also useful materials. And
I talk to you guys there. Also, if you like
my project, please support me on Patreon.
We have secret talking sessions. And now
I do short podcast every month, talking
about what I've learned, and stuff like that.
And also you can find my PSDs in layers and
speed-paints and stuff. So I would be
super glad to see you there. I guess, this
is it for today guys. I'll see you next
time. Byyyyeee! Oh man, I really hope that
focus in this video worked. Because, if it
did not... Also, if you find my red lipstick
on my teeth, I'm sorry. This is what
happens when you actually work as a
freelancer for a long period of time.
Because I'm wearing my pajama pants.
You seat at home, and you do your work for
a long period of time, and then BOOM!
You have red lipstick all over... I should
get a social life.
