Youtube daily report Sep 10 2017

Hi, it's Maija here, and today I'm doing one of those 5 star book predictions videos

that I've seen around on Booktube. I think the first one was made by Mercedes

from Mercy's Bookish Musings. I will link her original video in the description. So,

I have chosen (1-2-3-4-5) five physical books and I think three

ebooks that I think are going to be 5 stars or that I think that I am going to

like a lot, because I am very strict about my 5 stars -

I give 5 stars out rarely. If a book is 4.5 stars I most often round it down to

four on Goodreads. 5 stars means it needs to have some sort of spark, some sort of

emotion that I connect to, to really raise it above that level. So I'm hoping

at least some of these books on this list will manage to do that. I have a

couple that might be safer bets, let's start with one of those. So the safest

bet on my list is The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin. I have rated both of the

previous books in this trilogy 5 stars, I doubt the conclusion will be getting

anything less than that. Then I have another pretty safe bet, which is Fool's

Assassin by Robin Hobb. I'm saying it's "pretty safe", because I either give four

or five stars to Robin Hobb's books usually. It depends on which volume of that

particular trilogy I connect to the most. I haven't read a book from Hobb that I didn't

enjoy so far. So this is gonna get at least four stars and I hope for five, since

it has been, like, 15 years since I last read about the adventures of Fitz and

the Fool in the final book of the Tawny Man trilogy. Yeah, you're probably

wondering why I haven't read this one yet, and it's because I decided to reread

the Tawny Man trilogy and it took me ages for some reason to get the courage

to read the final book in the trilogy. And now I still need to read the Rain

Wilds before reading this one, because I haven't read the Rainwilds before. But

Robin Hobb is a pretty safe bet for me. Continuing with the authors that I've read

before, I also put Daughter of Hounds by Caitlín R. Kiernan on the list. Caitlín

R. Kiernan writes dark fantasy, sort of horror mix,

and this is the latest book of hers that I own that I haven't read yet. I

have really liked her newer works, especially The Red Tree, I think that was really

great. Daughter of hounds, I think, is loosely

part of a series, maybe the one that have Threshold and Low Red Moon before

that, so I think I need to reread Threshold and then read Low Red Moon and then

this one, even though I think it's more of a companion novel. I think I need to

start reading them, I feel so excited holding this book! So the next two

physical books are from authors that I haven't read before. The first is Miss

Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson. I got this as a gift last

Christmas from Elizabeth from Books and Pieces. I have seen the movie of this

years ago and I really enjoyed it. It was really fun and heartwarming, and just a

good cozy time. It's about this woman called Miss Pettigrew, she's a governess

and she gets hired by this nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly

children, and it's this one day that she goes around town with the nightclub singer.

It could be really good if it's super cozy and just so heartwarming that I get

all the feels, it might get five stars. Next I have a nonfiction, you might know

that I do not read a lot of nonfiction, but I have owned for years now

Tom Reiss' The Black Count - Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte

Cristo, which is a nonfiction book about the grandfather of Alexandre Dumas. And

I'm a big fan of the Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, so I just have

to read this. If this is a well-written and interesting non-fiction book, this

might get five stars just because I really love the subject matter. "Born to

a black slave mother and a fugitive white French nobleman, Alex Dumas was sold

into bondage but made his way to Paris, where he was schooled as a sword-

fighting member of the French aristocracy", and it's about him and his

life and him joining the army and rising in the ranks. It's just a really

interesting subject matter to me. So now we're moving onto the ebooks, and the first

of these is a safer bet again, because I have read this author before and I

really liked her writing, and that is Jackalope Wives by T. Kingfisher. This

is a collection of her short fiction including the winner of the Nebula Award

for best short story, Jackalope Wives, and the winner of the best novelette, I think

it was, in the Hugos of 2017, The Tomato Thief. And it's just a bunch of her fairy

tale themed short stories. I'm not quite sure if all of them are fairy tale

themed, but I think at least most of them will be. The previous short fiction

collection was called Toad Words and Other Stories, and I think it might be my

favorite thing of hers even from all of her novels that I've read. And I tend to

enjoy her writing, so I hope that one will be a five star one. I have read the

two award-winning stories and they were so good. Next I chose a horror book from

a new-to-me author, Gemma Files' Experimental Film. This is a horror book about

ghosts and movies, and I read the first chapter during a Try A Chapter tag - maybe

it was last year or earlier this year - and I was like: "This is the book that I'm

going to read next" and I still haven't read it. This is actually the book, apart

from The Stone Sky, that I most think will actually get the five stars, I don't

know why. It just sounds like exactly my cup of tea.

Also Thomas from SFF180 gave it five stars during his Halloweek

themed week last year and he doesn't really give five stars that often, either.

I hope this will be as good as I imagine. And for the last book I chose

Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. This just won the John W. Campbell Award at

the Hugo Awards this year, and as with Experimental Film, I have read the first

chapter of this. I read it when I had it out from the library, but I didn't have

time to read it then, I had to return it because it had reservations, but I really

liked the first chapter. I think this philosophical science fiction book will

not be for everyone, but I really liked the writing style. It sort of mimics

these older writing styles. Like, when I read the first sentence I was blown

away, because it sounds exactly like a thing that I like to read. The first

sentence is so long! "You will criticize me, reader, for writing in a style six

hundred years removed from the events I describe, but you came to me for

explanation of those days of transformation which left your world the

world it is, and since it was the philosophy of the Eighteenth Century, heavy with optimism

and ambition, whose abrupt revival birthed the recent revolution, so it

is only in the language of the Enlightenment, rich with opinion and

sentiment, that those days can be described." So those were the eight books

that I hope will get five stars from me. I would say at this point that I will

make a video when I have read all of them and tell you if they got 5 stars,

but who knows when that will be! I'm bad at reading the books that I say I'm

going to read. TBRs don't work for me. So if you have read these books and think

that I would really like them, let me know, but also let me know if you didn't

like them. I'd also like to see a lot of these 5 Star Prediction videos, so if you

have done one, let me know and I will go check it out from your channel. That's

all from me, and I will see you in my next video. Bye!

Reading Habits Tag - Duration: 2:11.

Hey everyone, My name is Maria, today I'm going to be doing the Reading Habits Tag.

I was tagged by my lovely friend Ana from Anas Guide to Books.

I'm going to leave her link down below, as well as the original tag.

Okay, so lets get started.

So question #1-Do you have a certain place at home for reading?Yes, my bed.

Mi cama is my favorite place to read.

#2- Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I usually go for bookmarks but if I don't have a bookmark for some reason, I'll just

use like a receipt, or just any paper lying around or I'll even doggy ear it.

#3- Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter or certain amount

of pages?

I have to stop after a chapter.

It's just like a thing.

I don't care what's happening, I need to finish a chapter and then do whatever it is I have

to do.

#4- Do you eat or drink while reading?

I either always have coffee or water so I'll always probably be drinking while I'm doing

anything.

#5- Multitasking: music or TV while reading?

Sometimes, so if I'm in public I'll usually want to strap my headphones on just because

the background noise just doesn't let me concentrate so I'll put some music on.

But that's only when I'm in public.

#6-One book at a time or several at once?

I prefer just one book at a time but lately I've been reading like four.

It's intense, I prefer one but it's fine, I could do either.

#7-Reading at home or everywhere?

Everywhere, anywhere, anytime.

I love reading.

#8- Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently, I don't remember the last time I read out loud honestly.

#9- Do you ever read ahead or even skip pages?

Noo I need to know whats happening in the book.

#10- Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

I don't do this on purpose but I'm always breaking spines, which is fine to me, that

just means I enjoyed me book.

#11 Do you write in your books?I highlight but I wont actually write, if I want to write

something, I'll use a sticky note and stick it in the book.

And #12 Who do you tag?

I'm going to be tagging Andrea from Confessions of a Book Addict and Camila from justabookeater.

Thank you so much for watching, thank you Ana for tagging me.

Remember to do some serious reading, I'll see you guys next time, adios!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU IRON PLASTIC BEADS? | @karenkavett - Duration: 9:57.

Hi guys, I'm Karen Kavett, and if you've been watching my channel for the last few

months, you might have noticed a little trend.

I've become obsessed with just trying to melt all of my craft supplies.

So today is another experimental DIY video where you're just going to see me try a

whole bunch of things, a lot of them are gonna fail.

Basically we're gonna melt plastic beads using an iron and a heat gun and I'm gonna

try to turn them into like key chains and backpack charms?

We'll see how that goes.

I mean, I guess we will see, right now, cuz I'm gonna, I'm gonna show you now, in

the rest of the video.

So keep watching and find out what happens!

So, I still have bags and bags of these plastic beads that I've had since I was a kid, and

today we're going to melt them.

I arranged a bunch of them onto parchment paper and then hit it with my iron.

After a few minutes, it turned out like this and I could peel it up from the parchment

paper to look like a puddle of half-melted beads.

I mean, I think that looks pretty cool, but unfortunately after it had cooled off completely,

it just wasn't very stable, and the beads broke apart really easily.

I did the same thing with some pink and red pony beads, trying to make a heart, which

again, looks pretty cool.

But again, it all broke apart with just a little bit of pressure.

Same thing with this one I made with these heart beads, maybe you could make two of them

and mount them back to back if you really like the design.

Next I decided to try to melt both sides of the beads, so I did the first side just like

before, and then I flipped it over and ironed the other side.

And I got this kind of worm looking thing, which was so hot to touch, I'm glad I didn't

burn myself.

So I grabbed an oven mitt, and it turns out when plastic is this hot, you can actually

cut it with scissors.

However, once it cools down even a little, it becomes impossible to cut, so I had to

keep heating it back up with the iron to cut it down into a rectangle.

Then I decided to try a bigger shape, so I arranged a bunch of colorful beads and ironed

both sides of them just like before.

For these beads, it takes several minutes for them to melt down into a flat shape that

you can cut.

But I actually managed to cut a pretty cute heart even though the oven mitt makes it awkward

to hold, but as soon as it's cooled down enough to not need the oven mitt, it's impossible

to cut with scissors.

But I got there in the end, and I even poked a thumbtack through to make a hole so I could

add a jump ring if I wanted to.

I think that's pretty cute, and once it cools down completely, it's hard plastic

again, so it's waterproof and pretty durable.

So that one sort of worked, but let's change gears for a minute and try using my favorite

tool, the heat gun.

I filled up a mold with Perler Beads, which are designed to be melted.

And then I hit it with the heat gun, and if you're smarter than me you can probably

see where this is going.

Since the mold is made of rubber, it started melting too.

I didn't want to destroy my mold, so I stopped when the beads were only half-melted, and

once it cooled down, it did look kind of cool, but this pineapple was definitely a fail.

So then I decided to do the same thing I did last time, only with Perler Beads in a mason

jar lid instead of glue sticks.

What I didn't anticipate is that the heat gun just blows all of the beads around before

they start melting, so I ended up with kind of a donut shape.

Also after melting about halfway, the beads just wouldn't really melt down much further,

even after I took them out of the lid and hit them with the heat gun super close up.

So I ended up with sort of a half-melted donut shape and that one was also a fail.

Alright, so now I'm going to do what Perler Beads are designed for and I'm going to

iron them.

But instead of putting them on a pegboard, I'm going to see what happens when you just

iron a bunch straight onto the parchment paper.

It turns out they flatten out just like the other beads, and this was actually way easier

to cut than the melted pony beads.

So that actually turned out alright, and it has this cool multicolored pattern on it where

the beads started melting into each other.

Next I tried to do a rainbow design so I ironed a bunch of different colors into a larger

shape and cut out a circle.

And then I pushed a thumbtack through to make a hole so I could add a jump ring later on.

The colors ended up a little bright and a little tacky, but I think it's alright,

it's kind of a 90s aesthetic.

So this next one was definitely a fail.

I just did one color and then I tried to cut my initial out of it, and it turns out you

really can't do any sort of complicated shape, because it's way too hot to hold

onto for more than a second, and once the plastic starts cooling down, it becomes harder

and harder to cut.

So that one just looks like garbage.

But I decided that I wasn't done with trying to melt beads in a mold, so I bought a bunch

of metal cookie cutters.

I filled up a small heart with Perler Beads and tried to melt them down with my heat gun,

and once again they would only get to be about half-melted.

But once I trimmed the sharp edges with scissors, this one actually looks pretty cool.

However, I tried the same thing with mini Perler beads because I thought they might

melt faster, and unfortunately they just started burning instead of melting down completely,

and then it completely broke apart when I tried to remove it from the cookie cutter.

I definitely did not get that cute little flower I was going for.

Ok, so I know that in the comments all you are probably screaming at me, you need to

get a heat glove like what you use for curling irons, so that's exactly what I did next.

However, I may have gotten a little too ambitious, because I tried to make a pineapple, and even

with the glove, the plastic is still really hard to cut, and you really can't do any

sort of complicated shape outside of like a heart or a circle.

You also just kind of have to get lucky and hope you cut the shape correctly the first

time, because you have such a small amount of time while the plastic is hot enough to

cut.

You can't draw any sort of shape to be able to follow the lines, you just need to go in

with your scissors and hope you get it right the first time.

I also wanted to show you a comparison between what the melted pony beads look like versus

the melted perler beads.

The perler beads definitely melt much faster and are easier to cut, however, you do get

a different design on the finished product.

So overall, do I recommend doing this project?

Not really.

It is cool that you can make your own plastic charms, however, it's kind of dangerous

and you could definitely burn yourself if you're not careful.

And even if you do use a heat glove, the texture from it can transfer onto the plastic which

doesn't look great, and also some of the fibers can end up embedded in the plastic

and you're never gonna get those out.

So if you need a very specific plastic shape for a costume or something, this might be

a way to do it, but overall it's just kind of an annoying, fiddly, time-consuming project

and you could probably get similar plastic toys from the dollar store for almost nothing,

and they would look so much better than these.

But as always I would love to know what you guys think, if you've ever tried a project

like this or if you have any ideas for other stuff you could make using this technique.

Be sure to let me know in a comment right down below.

So many ideas, so many craft fails, I hope you guys liked seeing that.

And make sure that you come back because in one of my future videos, I'm revisiting

the idea of melting hot glue gun sticks in a cookie cutter to try to make a coaster,

so we'll see how that goes . So if you want to make sure you don't miss that, make sure

you're subscribed and also ring that bell, I hear that's what you have to do to be

notified of when I upload.

If you're new here, I actually have an entire playlist for you with all of my DIY experiments.

I've tried to put crayons in my hot glue gun, I tried to iron all of my hot glue sticks.

So if you want to see what happens there, the link to that playlist will be right down

below.

Thank you guys so much for watching and for giving me a platform to do these weird craft

experiments.

I really like doing them, I hope you all like watching them, I'll see you guys next time.
