I will ponder the way that is blameless oh when will you come to me I will walk
with integrity of heart within my house I will not set before my eyes
anything that is worthless I hate the work of those who fall away
is shalt not clean to me I will look with favor on the faithful in the land
that they may dwell with me he who walks in the way that is blameless show
minister to me
well hello Woodman hey raise your hand if you have ever cleaned a room by
simply taking the contents of the room and shoving them in a closet and
shutting the door raise your hand if you would be mortified to think somebody
comes in opens the closet and looks at the junk we kind of like to keep our
trash hidden don't we yet every day every day we come across people and that
they look put together then they appear to be high-functioning they seem to be
doing well and yet beneath the surface now their appearance betrays trash pain
sorrow within but we we the redeem people of God are supposed to be
dramatically different are we not rather than covering up our trash we readily
confess we don't have it all together that's why we invite each other into our
lives so we can help each other out or so we should we are in week two of a
four week series that we've simply entitled we and and and we're looking at
what are our four mission values the things which we as a community have
committed to doing the things that we as a community are committed to encouraging
each other to do last week we look at the first one I gather the importance of
our corporate gathering together and with all of us here it would seem that
message well received so we will move on to the
second one thank you for being here got a little anxious this week thinking that
would be awful if no one came our second one is looking at the importance of our
connecting others to Christ and ourselves to each other simply put you
cannot live the Christian life in isolation you and I were created for
community and everybody everybody needs somebody you simply cannot do this alone
what makes us difficult obviously is is you need to be known by somebody and
that often runs counter to what we want to do we always want to kind of present
the best and not admit what's going on beneath the surface it's very important
that we do so and so that's we're gonna look at today if you would let us pray
Heavenly Father we thank you that you loved us while we were yet still sinners
when we were at our worst and all of our junk and all of our mess and all of our
trash you sent your son Jesus Christ to give his life in our place how foolish
we must look to you sometimes cognizant of the grace in which we stand that we
always try to hide and pretend that we're doing so much better than we
really are across these campuses this morning I
imagine a lot of us walked in we smiled maybe shook a hand said hello we look
put together but below it's not so great father I pray that you'd give us the
courage to be known I pray you to give us the courage to be open I pray we
would truly as a community connect with one another
and as we do that father would you be glorified would your son's name be high
and lift it up and would your spirit unify us our father helped me for the
part I play now we meet with us we ask in Jesus name Amen well if you have a
Bible a turn if you would to Psalm 101 what's a little unique about this series
is we're pulling all of our texts from the Book of Psalms and the reason we're
doing that is to sort of just highlight the fact that the things we're talking
about doing God's people have been expected to do for an awfully long time
this isn't something new that we've just come up with even in the Old Testament
these were still the expectations for the people of God now the Psalms are are
all put together but they're actually unique and and the one we looked at last
week told us a lot about at the beginning but didn't tell us who the
author is now this one doesn't tell us much about the son but it does tell us
who wrote it it begins at there at the top you see that a psalm of David now if
you're new to this stuff David was a regard it's pretty much a rock star in
the Old Testament he was a king he was an ancestor of Jesus Christ he was the
only one in Scripture of whom it said by God this is a man after my own heart
now David was not perfect in fact he was far from it he was a murderer he was an
adulterer he did all sorts of naughty stuff but the thing that set him apart
was his desire to live righteously he had this desire inside the intention of
his heart was the pursuit of righteousness and that's where this
begins look at verse 1 it says I will sing of steadfast love and justice to
you O Lord I will make music I will ponder the way that is blameless oh when
will you come to me I will walk with integrity of heart within my house and
let's just stop there mid-sentence it says I will sing of steadfast love and
justice and the ESV the translation we're using here doesn't put
in what what sort of in the text there NIV puts it in it's your steadfast love
and justice Oh David's not singing of some random steadfast love and justice
he's he's singing to God and in steadfast love and justice God's mercy
and God's judgment are in a lot of ways the two sides of the same coin that they
that they are sweeter together than they would be apart we don't often think of
judgment as being very sweet we don't measure up but God loves us so much he
sent us on Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our iniquity and and because
he loves us God is willing to point out to us when we don't measure up these
these these work in tandem together and David says I am going to sing of your
love and this justice he goes on to say that I'm going to ponder the way that is
blameless oh when will you come to me and that tells us two things about the
way that's blameless number one David has to ponder it lest you think that
living righteously is like a paint-by-numbers that anyone can do it
just like pay attention it's not now there are certain things in the
Christian life which are real simple don't do this do that but there are a
variety of situations we're gonna find ourselves in where we need to ponder
what actually is the righteous thing here it's not always so cut and dry
David sitting back he's I'm gonna ponder what is the blameless way I'm going to
think about it I desire to do it and as he ponders it he gets blown away and
it's like oh I'm going to need help and that's the second thing we see right
he's like oh when will you come to me the thought of living blamelessly all
the weight of it I can't do this on my own
God you are going to need to come to me god I'm going to need your presence if
I'm going to have any hope to do this and then what sets david apart from us
sometimes is he says I will walk with integrity of heart within my house some
of us we want to give the appearance of walking in integrity when we're away
from our house and then when we go home we let our hair down and just be our
normal selves have you ever changed your behavior depending on who's around you
are there certain jokes you tell with church folk that you well I'm not gonna
tell that joke with church folk but I mean are there ever times that you
change your behavior depending on who's around you
David's desire to live righteously is going to begin at home by himself forget
what people see before I even talk about that I want to do this even when no
one's looking now some 101 belongs to a group of Psalms that we would call royal
Psalms Psalms that are dealing with the Davidic monarchy and by extension the
greatest King Jesus Christ and as David praised these things for himself it's
only going to be in Jesus Christ that we ever see them totally done Jesus Christ
was the only person on the planet to ever live totally blameless whether
publicly or privately Jesus was a hundred percent consistent and in Jesus
we see the steadfast love and judgment of God the judgment of God is that we
were sinners the penalty of our sin the judgment for our sin was separation from
him but God loved us he sent His Son Jesus Christ upon the cross we see
Christ's love for us upon the cross we see Christ's payment
for our penalty Christ's payment and death in our place in Jesus there is the
mercy and judgment of God the expectation is that if you have
confessed Christ as Lord if you've believed in your heart that God raised
him from the dead you are safe from your sin and then you will live in accordance
with the calls Jesus puts on your life Jesus would say follow me follow me
David wants to follow and it begins in his home what what is the intention of
your heart I would have no idea of the numbers there's just no way for me to
know but I but I think some people the intention of their heart is different
than that which they present to the people around them is the intention of
your heart the pursuit of righteousness even when people are not watching it was
David's and he goes on to kind of highlight some things that if the desire
of your heart and I hope it is is the pursuit of righteousness things that we
need to think about things that we need to do in order to live righteously the
first one is that we need to run from evil look at verse 3 I will not set
before my eyes anything that is worthless I hate the work of those who
fall away it shall not cling to me a perverse heart shall be far from me I
will know nothing of evil whoever slanders his neighbor's secretly I will
destroy whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure
David makes a conscious decision to shun evil to run away from evil and then he
writes it out he writes out the things that have tripped
him up maybe in the past he writes out the things that he's seen bring other
people down and he's like I want to live righteously it's going to begin in my
home here are the things I will not do and it's quite the list isn't it he was
I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless worthless could be
translated wicked now I'm not going to look at any wicked thing and David is
writing this three thousands of years ago I think gave its mind would explode
to know the wicked things that we can look at from the privacy of our own home
David says I hate the work of those who fall away it shall not cling to me by
that David is not saying I hate those who fall away he that I hate the work of
those who fall away so so he has in mind someone who had been with him
worshipping God but then for whatever reason fell away from the worship of God
and now I started to worship some little idol David is making a commitment I am
never going to do that I'm never gonna succumb to idolatry what they do who
fall away shall be far from me it shall not cling to me a perverse
heart he says shall be far from me I will know nothing of evil a perverse
heart is one that is openly unfaithful for all the world to see David's like
that's not gonna be me I aim I desire I commit to know nothing of evil
whoever slanders his neighbor's secretly I will destroy I am NOT gonna partake in
those water cooler discussions I'm not gonna trade texts back and forth about
what so-and-so did last night whether it's true whether it's not that's not
going to be me when gossip when slander comes to me I'm taking it out not gonna
do it he says whoever has a haughty look in an arrogant heart I will not endure
people who are prideful I don't need around me
David the king is like I can never get arrogant I always need to have a soft
heart a sane estimation of myself I'm one step away from messing things up and
I don't need arrogant people around me tell me how awesome they are less I
start to think I'm pretty good because I'm not
David desires to run from evil to shun evil David recognizes it for what it is
a killer is there a chance you've been
treating sin - softly story is told I've heard it and I think there's different
variations but a traveler and a scorpion and the traveler comes up to the base of
a big mountain and the travellers been on a journey and he needs to get over
the mountain and just as he's about to begin his
ascent a scorpion comes up to him and the scorpion says I I need to get up
over the mountain I couldn't help but notice you're going would you kindly
take me up and the travelers a little hesitant he's like you're a scorpion and
the scorpion says I'm just I'm being legit I I'm like a little legs it's big
mountain you just give a scorpion a hand and so maybe against is better judgement
the traveler reaches down and picks up the scorpion and puts it on shoulder and
together they begin the ascent and it's a big mountain and the journey takes a
long time and as they go the traveler begins to get a little comfortable he
starts to talk to a scorpion and they go back and forth travels almost feels of
friends and then they reach the peak of the mountain and the traveler says were
here and the scorpion stings him on the neck and delivers a lethal dose
of poison the traveler falling to the ground looks at the scorpion and says
why the Scorpion says to him you knew what I was when you pick me up there are
many sins that we can commit in a day that we don't intentionally do and maybe
we don't even recognize we did something we shouldn't have done far more
concerning to me are the things which we readily know that is sinful that will
kill me Jesus Christ died on the cross to take that away and then we willingly
pick it up become friends with it the love of Jesus is that he loved us when
we were still sinners the judgment of Jesus though is he had to give his life
to pay the penalty for our sin and those of us who are not in Christ when he
comes back he will judge and punish for their sinfulness our sin is not
something to be trifled with our sin is not something that Jesus will come back
and just give nuggies and say you shouldn't have done that
our sin cost Jesus his life our sin is death are you flirting with something
that you should be running from
are you carrying a scorpion David committed to run from evil David
committed to connecting with the faithful look at verse six I will look
with favor on the faithful in the land that they may dwell with me he who walks
in the way that is blameless shall minister to me
contrary to what our world may value David is on the lookout for people who
are faithful in their walk with God he goes they they will dwell with me he who
walks in the way that his blameless shall minister to me and remember David
is king so he's got his royal household which is is in a way like a big company
you know David's saying I'm only gonna hire I'm only going to bring into my
home people who are faithful that's who I want to surround myself with
I want faithful people I want people who are blameless to minister to me which is
pretty insightful right because here's David the King affirming I'm going to
need help there is going to be a time when I need somebody to minister to me
as solid as I am as tight as I am with God as much power as I have in this
nation there will be a time when I need help and the person that ministers to me
I want to be someone who's faithful and blameless in their walk
do you need to connect with faithful people surround yourself with blameless
folk who can encourage you I'll tell you it doesn't come naturally we're not
always on the lookout for faithful I'm sure I've shared this before but I
forget what I shared half the time but III I'd Lee still remember sitting on
the edge of a stage at the end of a student ministry night I was a high
school pastor had a big student ministry and we set up this leadership team and
and the leadership team was to have some different responsibilities we made up of
kids and and and the students were picked by me talking to leaders talking
to kids and we ended up with some of the most popular influential students in our
ministry and they had some tasks that were simple helped clean up some that
were a little more weighty go reach out to the lonely ones and I sat on the edge
of this table or the the stage one night and and and I was like where are these
crazy leaders and I looked and they were all just hanging out talking to
themselves no one was cleaning there's these lonely kids right in front of him
and no one cares and I looked around and to my embarrassment I saw a group of
kids over here that we're cleaning up I actually watched another kid look across
the room to this lonely kid sitting by a fire pit and I watched the kid walk over
and sit with them and I'm a who are they I had no idea who they were tell you
they were not popular but they were faithful that night we got a new
leadership team got rid of Maul introduced myself to
some of the new ones
we don't always notice the faithful but the faithful are the ones we want
speaking into our life do you have do you have some do you have people who you
can connect with and they would speak truth David wants to run from evil he
wants to connect with the faithful here's an actually he wants to separate
from the faithless verse 7 no one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house
no one who other lies shall continue before my eyes David's like I'm not
gonna have Liars living in my home I'm not gonna have relationships with people
who are hypocrites and this is this is this is big boy big girl stuff right now
what we're about to talk about big boy big girl stuff we need to be engaging
with the lost fact Jesus gave us one big thing to do go into the world and make
disciples however if the people you are aiming to minister to ceases to be a
ministry where you're encouraging them but they are instead taking you down
with them you need to separate yourself can you do you have people in your life
that you know when you are with them you always end up doing things that you wish
you hadn't done the next morning you don't need to be around those people
kindly put you're not strong enough it was years ago and I'm sure we've come up
with better stuff since then like when I was a teenager I worked as a
lifeguard and and as for teaching you like you know back then um when you see
a drowning victim I don't know what they say now but but we had reach throw ro go
why because the drowning victims a very dangerous individual
they are flailing and in fear of death and if you just roll on up try and give
them a hug and calm them down they may take you down and so they say try to
reach them first before you go in the water if they're too far to reach try to
throw something to them before you go in the water if they're too far to throw
something try to get a boat and row to them before you go in the water and if
as last resort all you can do is go then go and try to come behind them try to
keep your wits about you we already have one victim we do not need to and we fool
ourselves I think telling ourselves that I'm gonna do ministry here I'm going to
reach them I'm going to be used of God to save them only to find in months
someone has to come in and get us very big boy very big girl content do you
need to separate yourself from somebody
now this is why you ever been on a real big boat and you notice those big metal
doors with the the wheels on them did you know why those are there because the
ship is built in compartments specifically designed so that if one
portion of the ship begins to take on water it can be sealed and keep the ship
afloat and if you've ever gotten into naval history or watch the old war
movies one of has to be the most terribly weighty thing for a captain of
a ship to have to decide is when a compartments taking on water but there's
injured people there but for the preservation of the ship the command has
to be given to close the hatch and I'm not saying you don't love people but if
it's taking you down you need some separation and I'm telling you Jesus
loves those people more than you do Jesus died on the cross for them and you
can make a very earnest prayer that says god I am so weak I just can't do it with
them anymore I want them to know you though God bring
people into their life maybe in time it could be me as I grow stronger do you
need some distance David wants to run from evil he names it and claims and
writes it out he wants to connect with those who are faithful surround himself
with people who can encourage him and
he's willing to separate himself from those who practice deceit and those who
utter lies finally he wants to help others look at verse 8 it's this morning
by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land cutting off all the
evildoers from the City of the Lord remember David is King he's King he's
the sovereign over the nation and so what he's saying is morning by morning
day after day I want to be used of God to help the people God's put in my life
no David a little more authority than you and I have right so he can really do
some heavy lifting you and I'd be hard pressed to try to cut off the wicked
from the land but the principle remains that we we can wake up with the desire
morning after morning to be used of God to help others in our families in our
neighborhoods our places of employment this beautiful second place second best
city in the nation to live Colorado Springs spa that God has put you
when you look at some of these things admittedly sounds harsh no one who
practices to see shall dwell in my house no one who utters lie shall continue
before a morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land
cutting off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord and I'll tell you it
sort of comes full circle a little bit the only reason it sounds harsh is
because you and I don't view sin the way that God does the cross the cross was
very harsh Jesus doesn't trifle with this stuff
He gave His life to take it away and you and I need to be agents for change we
need to stand up for God's justice and those who need it we need to be vehicles
and vessels of his love and grace to a world that desperately needs to hear it
and we're going to need help if we want to get it done if you desire to live
righteously you're going to need other people that you let in to your life do
you have that when you came in now you should have received a connect card in
your bulletin and just as we did last week we've given you four things easier
to print than to do but four ways that you can put this into practice in your
own life the first one is this to cultivate close relationships with a few
others who inspire you to live more like Jesus if you don't already have it like
David be on the lookout for the faithful for the blameless and ask them into
relationship maybe just say let's hang out I'll be too creepy right out of the
gate but but to begin to cultivate relationships with the kind of people
you would like to be secondly think through how you can
intentionally encourage family co-workers and friends in their faith
don't just be looking for people who can fill you up be looking for people that
you think you can fill and what's funny about it is lots of us most of us all of
us think that we could do is someone being a mentor to us but none of us
think that we could do any menteng or whatever it's called
we're not Rhett we're not ready I'm not equipped I don't know enough I really
can't be used I'm telling you if you know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior if
you can give a high-five or a hug you can be used to do the work of
encouraging people who are down on their luck and of struggling in fact sometimes
the best way you've encouraged somebody is to get with them and actually don't
say a stinking thing thirdly love well by getting to know your neighbors mean
kind of strangers greeting people at church and sharing the gospel I I want
to do this from my home I want to do I want this to be Who I am not just when
I'm being watched but as I walk across when a little cul-de-sac the people who
are in those homes I want to think that I would be encouraging and sharing the
gospel with them people I meet people I don't know people I do people I love
people I lesson love that I would be someone who's used of God to share the
gospel and the last one this is where it gets real big boy big girl evaluate your
personal influences remove people in situations in your life that pull you
away from Christ
if if the phone is too much temptation if the computer just just get rid of it
like it's 2018 I can't try if there's friendship circles that you just can't
not fall get away from it I've had seasons in my life where I I had to pull
myself away one long extended one I mean every Friday night I didn't I couldn't
go out anymore I watched reruns of Dallas and Miami
Vice not incredibly cool for a high school student and heartbroken when jock
died and you don't even know what that is about but I was crushed and the only
regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner it's not worth it we carry around
and we make friends with scorpions and all they're going to do is sting you sin
will never be your friend sin will never help you out
but the desire for it is real and so you need I need we need people to encourage
us do you have them if not I'd encourage you to get to work let's pray our God
and our Father oh we thank you for grace we thank you
for your mercy we thank you for the love of Jesus Father forgive us when we treat
sin as a pet forgive us for the times we think we can handle it or manage it or
keep it under control help us to run from it god help us Lord
to connect with those who are faithful and walking the way in which we would
desire to walk ourselves give us courage to put a little distance between us and
the things or people that would bring us down and may we live each life on
purpose seeking day by day to help others with
the platforms positions neighborhoods you've given us God would you be
glorified in us your people the church in Jesus name Amen
