At the end of March, I spent my spring break with a couple of friends traveling to Japan.
We visited the region of Kansai for a week
including the most popular cities: Kyoto, Nara and Osaka.
I lived in Kyushu and I used the cheapest means of transport which was ferry.
It was an overnight trip and as I chose the cheapest class,
I slept on a tiny futon among thirty-ish people.
Between snoring and the boat waving around
I slept poorly but it was a new experience and it spiced up my adventure.
I had to meet with my friends at Kyoto the next morning.
I took the train as soon as I arrived in Osaka: towards Fushimi-Inari!
Here I am in Kyoto, in Fushimi-Inari.
The Shinto Shrine dedicated to the Inari deity
has 10,000 torii that lead us to the top of a mountain:
Mount Inari.
The climb lasts more than one hour and it is often crowded.
But the higher you climb the fewer people there are as the hike gets harder.
Inari is the Shinto deity of agriculture and fertility.
It's symbolized by a fox and that's why you find some everywhere.
After coming down from Mount Inari,
we went to the traditional Gion district and the "Pure Water" temple, Kiyomizudera.
Kiyomizudera is a complex including Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
It is one of Kyoto's most popular tour.
The surroundings were really beautiful
but unfortunately we couldn't see the main building because it was under repair.
so covered by a large scaffolding.
We ended by a walk through the crowded shopping streets of Gion.
After a good night of sleep, we started the second day
by visiting Kyoto's most mythical place
The Golden Pavillon: Kinkaku-ji.
If Kinkaku-ji is so loved it's because it's covered with pure gold leaf.
The Zen strolling garden is magnificient
but there were so many people, we decided not to stay long.
At the end of our visit, I filled the first page of my "goshuincho" in.
It has been offered by a friend of mine.
It's a very precious present and it became my travel journal.
The last day we went to the little brother of the Golden Pavillon,
Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavillon.
After a slow walk through a shopping street,
we entered a wonderful Buddhist temple complex,
which embodies the Japanese Zen aesthetic of "wabi-sabi"
The Silver Pavillon has never been covered by silver
because of wars and dearth.
Compared with Kinkaku-ji, it's considered to be the least popular
and yet it's my favorite from far.
We continued our trip by walking through the Philosopher's path
which was just nearby.
This path is well known as the most romantic spot of Kyoto
thanks to the numerous cherry trees lining the river.
Unfortunately, cherry blossom season had barely started
so we didn't see any blooming tree.
By the way, the season was around one or two weeks late in the whole country.
Our trip in Kyoto ended with a feeling of relaxation close to nature
and went on to another dimension:
the wild Osaka !
